Breaking out of the Box at ICCU Arena The new Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) Arena is a showpiece for the University’s student-athletes, providing a unique gathering place for sports, concerts and events, while celebrating Idaho’s timber heritage with innovative mass timber construction.

Designed as a multi-event and court sports facility, the Arena provides the Vandal basketball program home court, practice court, men’s and women’s locker rooms, conference space, concessions, media room as well as coaching and staff offices. The new 4,000-seat ICCU Arena supports the University’s rising prominence in sports, strengthens the University’s ability to recruit athletes and provides an intimate and exciting fan experience.

Rolling Hills of the Palouse Inspired by the undulating landscape forms of the Palouse region, the ICCU Arena was designed as a dramatic gateway to the University’s campus. Extending back from the levitated west-facing entry porch, the roof splits apart to create overlapping contoured forms above the north concourse, invoking the sinuous, rolling hill contours of the Palouse.

ICCU Arena Looking to the west, visitors on the upper level can experience the Vandal terrace under cover of the cantilevered mass timber roof structure with views out to the rolling hills of the Palouse where the experience of place and community comes full circle.

Welcoming Entry The welcoming wood entry on the west side of the Arena offers students, spectators and concert-goers a dramatic look into the Arena and Vandal terrace, while also providing an inviting exterior plaza that connects back to the region’s unique characteristics and natural resources.

The Bowl The 4,000 seat ICCU Arena supports the rising prominence of the University’s basketball program, strengthening their ability to recruit athletes and provide a vibrant and intimate fan experience that showcases the region’s unique natural materials and landscape.

ICCU Arena To the east, the roof gently wraps down around the practice court and connects with the ground plane. Ample daylight and large windows with dramatic views connect the practice court to the surrounding campus.

Future of College Sports Facilities The mass timber design and abundant use of natural light represents a significant break from the traditional steel and concrete sports arena typology.

Every aspect of the traditional “windowless steel box” arena prototype has been rethought toward sustainable systems that should become the future model for college sports facilities.

Facilities for Recruiting Top Talent The new, state-of-the-art facility supports the Vandal’s goals of attracting top talent to the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Floorto-ceiling experiential graphics reinforce Vandal pride, while spaces like the locker rooms and closing room with views out to the bowl support the recruitment and signing of new talent to the Vandal teams.

Innovation & Locally Grown Wood The Arena was envisioned to promote innovation in sustainable wood design, through collaboration with regional foresters and wood product industry partners.

The Arena celebrates athletic achievement, while serving as an educational catalyst in the form of a learning laboratory for students in the University’s forestry and engineering departments by showcasing the innovative use of locally harvested timber in glue-laminated long span trusses, and dowel-laminated-timber (DLT) structural elements. The project serves as a national model for the use of mass timber in long-span sports facilities.
