The New Orleans Public School Enrollment Process November 15, 2012

Why create a centralized enrollment process?

The current process is confusing and inefficient, creating problems for families...

A

I dropped applications off at 10 schools but didn’t get into any of them

B I just moved here and don’t know which schools have available seats

C I got into S.J. Green and I want to get into Esperanza

D

I got into Esperanza and I want to get into S.J. Green…too bad we can’t switch!

I got into multiple schools, so now I’m “holding a seat” at all of them

What are the goals of the new process?

As many students as possible get into their top choice school

Make the process easier for families to navigate

How does the new process achieve our goals?

One Application

• Parents submit one application per child, not one to each school. Parents can choose to stay at their current school or apply to different schools.

One Way to Rank Schools

• Parents who want to apply to different schools will be able to list up to 8 schools in rank order without risking their current seat.

One Set of Priorities

• Some applicants, like siblings of current students, will receive priority for admission. Priority rules for each school are clearly described.

One Timeline

• Not first-come first-served. All applications will be considered at the same time

One Offer

• Students will receive one match, to their highest choice school that has available seats

Which schools are participating?

Schools Included for 2013-14 All charter and direct-run schools in the Recovery School District All direct-run schools in the Orleans Parish School Board

Not Included for 2013-14 Charter schools managed by Orleans Parish School Board (e.g., Lusher, Audubon), and BESE (International School)

What does a family need to do?

Tell Us What You Want:

Current students are guaranteed the right to return to their school: Simply check the box to indicate your child “Intent to Return” to his / her current school.

List up to 8 schools on the application without risking your child’s seat at his / her current school: Your child keeps his / her seat unless he / she is assigned to a school of your choice Siblings receive priority in the enrollment process.

Apply to non-participating schools (i.e. Audubon, Warren Easton) by contacting the school directly.

DimensionM/U - Middle School (Algebra 1 Preferred)

1. nCASE has partnered with DimensionU (formerly Tabula Digita of New York) to use its DimensionM gaming software to support instruction in pre-algebra and algebra 1. Its developers incorporated instructional modules within a 3-D environment that transports the students into a virtual world with embedded algebra instruction.

2. All missions are mapped to the 50 U.S. state standards, including Washington, D.C. and to the new Common Core State Standards. DM can be used by the classroom teacher during in-school or out-of-school instruction.

3. Students have the option of practicing their algebra skills independently in a single-player mission or collaboratively in a multi-player mission. DU has added some cool new features, including a Rewards Store where students can collect new avatar assets and Power-Ups. They have the ability to earn DU tokens to redeem in the Rewards Store. They also have access to a favorite new mission, Velocity, where players race to the finish line on a virtual track.

4. The complete new user interface includes expanded mathematics curriculum covering more than 400 mathematics skills.

For participating school districts, the NDEP laboratory POC provides a three-year license for up to three school buildings serving a combined total of 1,000 students (valued at $15,000). DU has expanded its offerings to include arithmetic games for grades 3-5.
