Darryl began in OE’s educational day programming when he was 56. The last time he attended a day program was when he was a teenager. When he started with OE, he was scared of the unknown and would stand by the window watching everything. As weeks and months passed, he began sitting with his peers and eventually started participating. Soon, he developed friendships with OE staff and his peers. He began trying new activities and having fun. He started calling staff by their names and would wave them over to see the puzzle he was working on.
Today, Darryl not only is thriving in OE’s day programming, he shares a home with two housemates as part of OE’s Supported Living residential program. Darryl has totally broken out of his shell. He rides the bus to OE, participates in Recreational Therapy and loves going outdoors and taking trips to coffee shops. Darryl now advocates for himself – he picks what he wants to wear and eat, as well as what he wants to watch on TV. He’s even participating in Special Olympics. Darryl’s family was surprised and thrilled by the progress he made once he joined OE’s residential and educational day programming.
“OE has created incredible opportunities for Darryl. When he began services at OE, he transitioned from existing within his life to LIVING his life. He is in the right place at the right time with the right support. We’re so grateful to OE for cultivating a life that Darryl can thrive in.”
- Dennis, Darryl’s Brother
