This past year was nothing short of monumental at Opportunity Enterprises. Since 1967, OE has served individuals with intellectual and development disabilities in myriad ways, always evolving in order to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. Throughout our history, we’ve known that inclusivity benefits the entire community – not just those with disabilities. Under this core belief, we unveiled the three tenets that will guide us forward: a new mission, a new vision and a new strategic plan. Embracing the value that inclusion brings to a community, OE will always be a benchmark for innovate services that empower people through a person-centered approach with an unwavering focus on quality. This is our vision. OE occupies an important role in the community. Our commitment to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and providing high-quality career training and readiness services uniquely positions us to effect positive change in both areas. Our new mission reflects this: to create inclusive and equitable opportunities for people of all abilities. With these in mind, we embarked on the important work of creating a new strategic plan that would set the course for the next several years. We interviewed staff, individuals with disabilities, the families we serve, community leaders and our Board of Directors to determine how we could best serve our region. The result is our new strategic plan. The themes of services, operations, people, sustainability, innovation and growth – all supported by key initiatives – will drive OE to provide opportunities for inclusion and enhance the quality of life for everyone in Northwest Indiana. OE is on the brink of something special: guiding the development of a community unlike any other. One where every person is valued, respected, accepted and included.

Social Enterprises Impact Report OE’s social enterprises perform important work in the community while proudly providing employment opportunities for people of all abilities. From our popcorn and sweets shop Do Goodies to SecureShred and Clean Team, OE’s social enterprises provide solutions while generating revenue toward OE’s mission of creating inclusive and equitable opportunities for people of all abilities. A noteworthy aspect of our Social Enterprises' workforce is the inclusion of individuals with disabilities constituting 60% (SecureShred), 50% (Do Goodies), 59% (Clean Team) of our talented teams.

Maddox: Personal Growth Maddox has been an asset to Camp Lakeside from day one. A camper herself, Maddox always looked for ways to help others and has always taken the initiative to find ways to lend support where needed. She’s taught others beneficial life skills and encouraged everyone to participate. Wanting to help even more, Maddox learned sign language in order to better communicate and develop lasting friendships with other campers! 9
"Nothing About You Without You" Indiana’s Bureau of Development Disabilities Services (BDS) administers the Home and Community-Based Service (HCBS) waiver that support individuals with developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. The HCBS Settings rule ensures rights, choices, options and opportunities for people with IDD to live in their homes and participate in their communities. In short, the HCBS states “Nothing about you without you” – meaning those diagnosed with IDD should direct any plans that are about them.

Collaboration OE’s staff giving campaign embodies the commitment OE staff have to creating inclusive and equitable opportunities for people of all abilities. Three years ago, OE created an employee-giving program that provides staff an organized opportunity to give financially. In addition to their enormous contributions of talent and time, OE staff have come out in full force. In 2022, the OE staff giving campaign raised $10,000. In fiscal year 2023, that amount doubled! Every dollar from the employee giving campaign goes directly back into OE.
