55 Years of Four-Legged Friends!

5 years is a real milestone. It’s the emerald anniversary, and we are proud to have been representing the boating community in BC and beyond for more than a half-century! But 55 years isn’t the grand, golden anniversary of 50 years. Nor is it the diamond anniversary awaiting us at 60. So, I thought for our 55th anniversary we would look back at some of the more lighthearted stories PY has published about our beloved four-legged cruising companions over the years.

Looking through our archives the first story I could find dedicated to boating with pets was written by R. Gehman in April 1982 (it’s possible I missed something from the 1970s.) Gehman’s tale recounts a cruise from Vancouver to the Gulf Islands in a 20-foot O’Day sailboat with two kids and two(!) dogs aboard. The highlight of the story is when one of the dogs gets stuck under the dock at Pirates Cove. It takes some coaxing to free him from captivity.

In August 1996, we published a humorous story encouraging boaters to clean up after their dogs—a reminder that holds true today. It reminded me of a letter we published a couple of years ago from a reader who calculated the amount of doggy doodoo entering the most popular Desolation Sound anchorages during the summer… His conclusion was not pretty.

Over the years, we’ve published numerous articles providing thoughtful tips on how to make your pet more comfortable on board. The top tips

from Christine Green’s August 2005 article included providing a shaded area for your pet, ensuring you have a constant supply of fresh drinking water and checking regularly for cuts and heat burns on their paw pads—good advice!

In June 2018, Diane Selkirk reminded readers to bring plenty of treats and to practice “animal overboard drills.” But don’t practice with your pet.

In July 2014, Larry MacDonald and Fern Magnus-Brown wrote an interesting article detailing the best dogfriendly marinas and anchorages in the Broughtons. These included Turnbull Cove, Forward Harbour and Sullivan Bay Marina. We’d be interested to hear if these locations still hold up.

Our most recent article on the topic came from Barb Muir in September 2021. It included specific first aid tips for boating with your pets. The most important reminder was to locate veterinarian clinics in your cruising region before leaving the dock.

These articles have been some of our most popular reads over the years and we are happy to share them again online at pacificyachting.com.

The tradition of publishing doggy boating stories continues in this issue with long-time PY contributor Anne Vipond reminiscing about boating with her family pets—the good and the bad. And that’s certainly a theme throughout all of these stories. Boating with your pet isn’t always easy, but it’s almost always worth it. Cheers to 55 years on the water and to 55 more!

KEEPING PACE

On New Year’s Day, 1975, I took delivery of my Paceship 26, Tara, at Martyn Clark’s Cove Yachts in Maple Bay. I still have Tara and will be going down to the marina at Deep Bay on the island this morning to commence final touches on the installation of our new Yamaha 9.9. Time to replace the original Evinrude!

I note that Martyn is still actively contributing to PY and the boating community. Tara has been an integral part of my life for a long time and continues that role.

Much obliged.

WE WELCOME YOUR LETTERS Send your letter, along with your full name, and your boat’s name (if applicable), to editor@pacificyachting.com. Note that letters are selected and edited for brevity and clarity.

Hi

Derrick,

I loved those vivid memories of the past your excellent prose summed up. Perhaps you could recount some of your adventures for Pacific Yachting!

Thank you for sending that to Sam and on to me. By coincidence, Marg and I now live in Nova Scotia not far from the former Paceship factory in Mahone Bay where your boat was built. We have just sold our last boat, Quintet, named after our five daughters and hope to return to BC before long. Plenty of older PY 23s and 26s still kicking around out here!

Thanks again for the update.

DIESEL DELIGHT

Dennison Berwick’s article in the May edition of Pacific Yachting on installing engine mounts is an absolute gem for boating enthusiasts. Dennison’s expertise and attention to detail shine through every paragraph, making it a must-read for anyone involved in marine engineering. The article is comprehensive, providing a step-by-step guide that is both informative and easy to follow. Dennison’s ability to simplify complex concepts and offer practical tips is truly commendable. For further reading, I’d recommend his book Marine Diesel Basics (from Amazon or from his website of the same name Marine Diesel Basics).

Mobile Pump-Out Boats Gain Popularity, Expand Throughout Puget Sound

Options for recreational boaters to pump out boat sewage safely and efficiently are expanding throughout Puget Sound. Travelling “pump-out boats” that come to where the boaters are is a service that more and more marinas and ports are supporting and expanding upon.  The grant-funded boats keep an estimated 10,000,000 gallons of sewage out of Puget Sound annually, protecting shellfish beds and improving overall water quality. A steady increase in recreational boating around Puget Sound since the pandemic is one reason that Washington State Parks Clean Vessel Act Program (CVA) is making it a priority to help fund and coordinate with ports and marinas as they add more mobile pump-out boats to meet the growing need for vessel sewage disposal options. Catherine Buchalski Smith, manager of the Washington CVA Program, explains, “Washington State Park’s Clean Vessel Act Program is working closely with ports and marinas to increase pump-out options throughout Puget Sound and the Salish Sea.” The CVA program funds infrastructure and also educates boaters on the importance of safe and legal sewage disposal through Pumpout Washington, an educational outreach program run by Washington Sea Grant, with funding from the Washington State Parks CVA Program. The program improves stewardship practices that protect the quality of local waterways.

Boaters have a strong interest in using mobile pump-out boats, because the boats come to them, making it easy to do the right thing—and pump out their sewage rather than dump it overboard. “This type of service is especially helpful in those beautiful and remote areas with high boating activity that may not be near a marina with a pump-out station, like parts of the South Sound or the San Juan Islands,” says Buchalski Smith. Area ports and marinas are equally motivated. For example, the newest port to take ac-

tion is the Port of Port Townsend. “The Port is excited to launch a new pump out boat, in partnership with State Parks, to both provide a service desired by boaters and help keep the waters of Port Townsend Bay clean,” explains Eron Berg, executive director for the Port of Port Townsend.  Additionally, the Port of Lopez started an all-volunteer pump-out boat program in 2022 with a goal of expanding service beyond Fishermen’s Bay, and nearby Roche Harbor now has two pump-out boats to serve the masses of boaters. Port Ludlow maintains a wood and all electric pump-out boat through a partnership with the Northwest School for Wooden Boat Building. Executive director of the school, Betsy Davis, sees the arrangement as a winwin. “We really appreciate the learning opportunities that this project is providing to our students,” she says.    To make it easier for boaters to find a nearby mobile pump-out boat, Washington State Parks recently partnered with Washington Sea Grant to develop a pump-out boat tracker, a GIS map that locates mobile boats in real time. This tool is still in its early development stages and boater feedback is actively being solicited to help improve the tool.  washingtonseagrant. maprogress.com.

Buddy Melges

1930-2023

Harry Clemons Melges

Jr., best known as Buddy Melges, and considered one of the greatest sailors of all time, has died at age 93. One could say that his competitive sailing and messing around in boats were bred in the bone.

When his father, Harry Melges Sr., returned home from the Second World War in 1945, he launched Melges Boat Works in Zenda, Wiscon-

sin, providing Buddy with ample opportunity to perfect his sailing skills. Later, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Korean War, during which he earned a Bronze Star.

Buddy continued to sail competitively after Korea and in 1964, he won a bronze Olympic medal in the Soling Class, then a gold medal in the Flying Dutchman Class at the 1967 Pan

American Games in Winnipeg, followed by a gold in the Flying Dutchman Class in the 1972 Olympics in Kiel, Germany. Not resting on these laurels, he won the Star championships in 1978 and 1979, while also becoming 5.5 Metre world champion in 1967, 1973 and 1983. He collected additional championships between 1959 and 1983 as well as many other trophies. He became known as the Wizard of Zenda and his talents were so profound he could apply them to many different one-design racing boats. He also applied his formidable sailing skills to winning skeeter iceboat races, wrapping up seven first places between 1955 and 1981. He mentored many

sailors and in 1983 wrote a popular sailing handbook, Sailing Smart

Arguably his most prestigious sailing grit was demonstrated when he competed in two America’s Cups. He raced in the 1987 Perth, Australia, contest but did not win the prize. But in the 1992 race off San Diego, at age 62, he helmed America3, financed and skippered by billionaire businessman

Bill Koch. They took home the trophy. “Buddy is the Leonardo da Vinci of sailing,” Koch said in a video.

Buddy was honoured numerous times—among the many laurels, he became US Sailing’s Rolex Yachtsman of the Year three times and was twice named One Design Sailor of the Year. According to the Melges website, Buddy won more than 60 major

national and international sailing championships and was inducted in the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, the World Sailing Hall of Fame in the same year, and the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011.

During all these sailing events, the re-named Melges Performance Sailboats Company continued to flourish. Buddy collaborated with yacht designer team Reichel/ Pugh, and along with other sizes, built the Melges 24, of which at least 900 hulls have been produced. The Melges 24 are known around the world and hold their world championship races in places ranging from Miami to Helsinki to Dubai (the Royal Victoria Yacht Club hosted the 2018 Melges 24 World Championship regatta).

Buddy leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Gloria, and children Laura, Hans and Harry III, as well as seven grandkids. The Melges traditions, however, continue: son Harry III runs the company and grandson Harry IV has qualified for the US Olympic Sailing Team.

CRUISING GUIDES

Updated Version of Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage Now Available

William Kelly and Anne Vipond, longtime contributors to Pacific Yachting, have released an updated edition of their award-winning guidebook, Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage

Experienced boaters and kayakers know BC’s Inside Passage as one of the finest cruising grounds in the world with hundreds of pristine islands, inlets and anchorages. The updated 2nd edition of Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage is a comprehensive selection of over 200 boating destinations. Some are well known, while many are secluded getaways.

In addition to the inside waters of British Columbia’s South Coast, such as the Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound, the guidebook includes the Central Coast waters north of Cape Caution up to Bella Bella and Shearwater, with fresh detail on Fitz Hugh Sound, Rivers Inlet, Hakai Luxvbalis Conservancy and Queens Sound.

The authors’ favourite cruising area is north of Cape Caution. This is a paradise of islands and anchorages. Tourists from around the world come to Fitz Hugh Sound and Hakai Pass not only for the great fishing but also for the prolific wildlife, most notably the return of the humpback whales. The number of humpbacks now feeding each summer in BC waters is estimated to be about 2,000.

First published in 2006, Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage was well received by the local boating community and across the United States. A meaty

guidebook of 336 pages, Best Anchorages contains hundreds of maps, aerial photographs and images capturing the unique beauty of the many anchorages Kelly and Vipond have visited and written about for over 40 years.

The book includes detailed information on localized weather and sea conditions, piloting the tidal passes, local marinas and interesting background on the historic sites and cultural attractions cruisers can experience along the way. The areas covered include the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Desolation Sound, Discovery Islands, Blackfish Sound, Broughton Archipelago and Queen Charlotte Strait.

Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage has been recognized by the Society of American Travel Writers as an outstanding work in travel journalism and received a Lowell Thomas Award in the guidebook category at SATW Foundation’s annual competition.

Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage is available at bookstores, chandleries and online. For more information visit oceancruiseguides.com.

The Science & Superpowers of Seaweed—A Guide for Kids

Amanda Swinimer, popularly known as the “mermaid of the sea,” has transformed the concepts from her recently published The Spirit and Science of Seaweed into a highly readable children’s book, The Science & Superpowers of Seaweed—A Guide for Kids. In easy-to-understand language accompanied by colourful photos and drawings, Swinimer describes her love of the kelp forests that flourish in the Salish Sea—it’s her place of work, or, as she writes, her “office.” She uses her deep love for the sea, seaweeds and the marine creatures she discovers to entice young readers to explore the sea themselves.

Swinimer uses icons that identify

which seaweeds grow in Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic and Southern oceans. She explains the basics of photosynthesis, how seaweeds—or as she calls them, “plants of the sea”—are put together, including the blades or fronds, stipes and holdfasts. She introduces the term, “phycology,” the study of algae, which includes seaweeds. Throughout the book, she cleverly includes small sidebars that contain a “phyco-fact.” Here’s one example, “Phycologists estimate there are at least 450 species of seaweed that grow in the Pacific Northwest, with new species still being discovered.”

medicinal value. She also explains the ecological value of seaweed—the amount of carbon they sequestrate, how much oxygen they emit, and how their undulating movement in the water column provides a nursery for young fish species, hides crabs and sea stars, and tempers storms. She provides examples of how plastics and other garbage can destroy marine fauna. She also offers lessons on how youngsters can collect seaweed themselves.

It’s not all book learning. Swinimer presents recipes for your offspring to make seaweed gel and seaweed bath bombs. A Mermaids’ Mineral-Rich Snack leads to an explanation of the many healthy min-

erals found in seaweed.

Parents and grandparents often seek out books that will entertain and educate their young family members. The Science & Superpowers of Seaweed fills the bill. It is an excellent book to stick in your pocket when you take children to the beach, a marine park, or on your boat. From a dinghy they can view the types and importance of that undulating marine vegetation. It also allows kids to forage on beaches and learn to identify the many seaweeds that wash up on land, and the critters in a tidepool.

And I want to make that seaweed gel myself.

Salish Sea Miracles

Above and below the surface

Summer. No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks. I loved school. I was the kid who cried when I was sick and had to stay home, even for a day. But on the last day in spring, I hopped and skipped and chanted this ditty right along with my friends.

Summer camp was even better than school. Memories still linger and re-

Smain bright. Twice a day for a whole week, I got to walk out into a muddy, man-made lake, splash about and pretend I knew how to swim. As the sun set, we sat around huge bonfires on the shore, gobbled s’mores and sang rounds of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “There Was a Cabin in the Woods” and “Are You Sleeping?” We spied on older kids who paired up and sneaked away from the fire to make out in the woods. We grumbled about climbing out of our cosy bunk beds to do calisthenics before breakfast.

In southern Alberta, apart from camp, the most water I saw in one place was in roadside ditches full of snow melt. On hands and knees beside my brother, I’d

peer down at the tadpoles wriggling about and wonder when and how they would turn into frogs.

Here on the edge of the Salish Sea, we have many opportunities to study sea creatures and understand our marine environment.

Various parks, aquariums and other organizations offer learning experiences for kids of all ages. For example, the Shaw Centre in Sidney provides day camps with beach walks and other fun, educational activities designed for grade-school kids. Full of curiosity and enthusiasm for the discovery of new creatures, they will always remember the first time they touched a barnacle, watched a wolf eel slither into its

rocky den, or spotted a crab hiding in the eel grass. The memory will light up their eyes when their own children discover the same things for themselves.

The University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories together with several other organizations, provides high school pupils opportunities to learn from research scientists, participate in active scientific research and explore potential careers in marine science. This may lead to rich, satisfying careers. But whether they choose to work in a marine science field or not, all who participate will have a better understanding of our unique environment and ecosystems.

The Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators group offers opportunities to learn about the field of marine education. This July, it’s their turn to host a conference put on by the National Marine Educators Association in Bellingham. The emphasis will be on the conservation, enjoyment and wise use of the sea; understanding how we influence the ocean and how it influences us. Adults are welcome, too, and can attend either in person or virtually.

My own saltwater education began when I left the roadside ditches behind, migrated to the coast, and took scuba diving lessons. Eventually, summer came to mean long cruises in the San Juans and Gulf Islands. Each year, I became more aware of the miracle that is the Salish Sea, and more appreciative of the bountiful resources that surround us. At the end of a long day, whether learning something new, cruising, fishing or tending crab pots, what could be better than fresh fish or shellfish accompanied by vegetables from a local market?

In July, tomatoes are the stars. All year, I wait for these lovely globes with almost as much enthusiasm as I once anticipated summer camp.

I never pass up versatile cherry tomatoes. Whether sweet golden yellow or tart red, they’re perfect for quick pasta sauces, salads and snacks. When skewered and grilled with chunks of zuc-

chini, bell peppers and mushrooms, or sautéed quickly in butter and garnished with lemon zest and a squeeze of lemon, they make a brilliant addition to any plate.

Meaty, low-moisture, egg-shaped Romas keep their shape and taste divine when halved and slow roasted, layered in vegetable tian or added to pizza.

Of the heirloom varieties, the plump, heavy, red globes are still my favourites. What’s prettier and better tasting than caprese salad garnished with fresh green basil? Plus, they make fabulous BLTs, shells for baked eggs and side dishes for grilled meats.

Summer is still the best, and full of miracles.

CELEBRATING 55 YEARS

Memories of boating in the Pacific Northwest, and a partnership with Pacific Yachting

1968 - 2023

It was 55 years ago that I arrived in British Columbia to help my father build a log house on the shores of Bird’s Eye Cove (Maple Bay). My fiancée, Margaret, flew out from Toronto for a brief visit and we stopped at the Malahat lookout. With the panoramic view of the Gulf Islands spread out below, she declared, “this is the most beautiful

place I’ve ever seen!” We determined to return one day and after completing my degree at the University of Toronto followed by a leisurely one-year honeymoon to the West Indies in our schooner Ayesha, and a brief stint as a yacht broker and charter boat operator, we packed our bags and infant daughter, Julia, and started a new boat business in Bird’s Eye Cove (Maple Bay).

Appropriately enough, the new business was named Cove Yachts, based at Kurt’s Marina (now part of Maple Bay Marina) and was one of the pioneers of bare boat chartering in BC (Bosun’s Charters in Sidney was our only competitor) with a small fleet of Grampian 23s. As the business expanded, we built our own marina next door, which included a 100-ton marine railway, boat repairs, moorage, sailing school, yacht brokerage and eventually a dealership in Paceship Yachts.

Little did I know that a magazine which was launched the year I helped build my father’s house would play a vital role in our fledgling business four years later. Gerry Kidd was the editor of Pacific Yachting in those days and with his input and support we crafted an advertising campaign that really put Cove Yachts on the chart. The bareboat charter business grew to a fleet of 27 boats, power and sail, with a program

that utilized privately owned vessels. And though the farthest dealership from the factory in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Cove Yachts was awarded Top Canadian Dealer for the number of Paceships sold.

One day, a cheerful sailor with a crop of curly hair and a wide grin turned up at the marina in his Gulf Island 29 Tumbo and thrust a package into my hands. “This is the manuscript for my new book”, said Bill Wolferstan, “Could you get it to Pacific Yachting for me please? I’m in a bit of a hurry.” I didn’t know Bill then, but his book A Cruising Guide to the Gulf Islands, published by Pacific Yachting, became an icon and a valuable reference for West Coast boaters and Bill himself became the magazine’s cruising columnist.

Fast forward a few years and after the sale of Cove Yachts and a year restoring a Norwegian schooner on the Isle of Wight, Marg and I settled in the remote

community of Oona River, Porcher Island, just south of BC’s border with Alaska. There we salmon fished in the summers, crabbed in the winters and undertook some boat building projects including the complete rebuild of our fishing vessel Distant Drummer. But with four small daughters we knew this isolated lifestyle wouldn’t last forever and when we got a call from Wally Eggert, chair of a sail training organization in Victoria, asking if we could revitalize their programs and restore Canada’s last original Grand Banks fishing schooner still sailing, the Robertson II, we knew it was time to move.

Once again, Pacific Yachting came to the rescue as we developed an advertising campaign for SALTS, initially the 10-day summer sail training trips and later the boat donation program. In less than two years, the newly restored Robbie was fully booked and it was time for another ship. In quick succession, the little brigantine Spirit of Chemainus was launched in the “Little Town That Did,” Chemainus, in 1985 and the topsail schooner, Pacific Swift at Expo ‘86 in Vancouver.

The latter was specifically designed for offshore sailing, and I was privileged to skipper her on her maiden voyage to Expo ‘88, in Brisbane, Australia,

and several other sailing adventures to some of the remotest and most beautiful places on earth, with a boat load of enthusiastic young trainees and our five daughters.

The Swift’s voyage to Easter and Pitcairn islands was chronicled in a twopart article for Pacific Yachting (when Duart Snow was editor). When Peter Robson took over the helm at the magazine he encouraged me to write a monthly seamanship article which has since expanded over the years with editors Dale Miller and Sam Burkhart and includes cruising, ‘how to’, boat maintenance, nautical fiction, book reviews and navigation.

Pacific Swift was followed by Pacific Grace, my last major project at SALTS before turning over the wheel to younger, capable leaders. Marg and I then embarked on an extensive restoration of the Passat, a lovely teak ketch

we had caretaken during our days at Cove Yachts, followed by six years living aboard and cruising the coast, visiting old haunts and old friends. We also found time to teach navigational courses aboard the Canadian brigantine Fair Jeanne on a passage from the Bahamas to Jamaica; attend the build of the rivateer Lynx in Rockport, Maine, and captain her on the maiden voyage to New-

port, California, via the Caribbean and Panama Canal; assume the position of executive director at the Maritime Museum of BC as well as the Los Angeles Maritime Institute; and get very involved with the Victoria Classic Boat Festival, firstly as a participant, then as honourary commodore and currently as one of the judges.

As I look back over the past five decades and more, my memories are enriched by those highlights: well over 60 articles (and several covers) for Pacific Yachting; thousands of young people introduced to the transforming power of ships and the sea; recipient of Pacific Yachting’s “Twenty Five Who Made A Difference” award on its 25th anniversary; logging over 100,000 miles under sail coastally and offshore; and recently the Maritime Museum of BC’s Beaver Medal Award (with Margaret) for “Maritime Excellence.”

MONTAGUE HARBOUR

Spoiled for choice

JULY 2023 - 31
DESTINATION
Looking toward Phillimore Point and the southern entrance to Montague Harbour.

IIt is mid-morning in Montague Harbour and my partner and I are tied up to one of the 35 marine park mooring buoys located at the northwestern end of the bay. The buoys, which last night were fully occupied, are now freeing up as boaters untie and head off for their next destinations. We are staying put for another night so instead of firing up the engine and casting off from the mooring buoy, we are firing up the barbecue for breakfast pizza (egg, sausage, salsa and cheese on naan bread).

On this trip we’ve chosen to take advantage of the park buoys, but this isn’t the only option for boaters cruising to Montague Harbour—and for first time visitors it’s good to know your options.

Moorage Option 1

Montague Harbour Marina

On previous trips, we’ve chosen to reserve a slip at Montague Harbour Marina, located next to the old BC Ferries landing. It’s a full-service marina which happily accepts transient boaters—reservations are highly recommended. The well-stocked store includes snacks and drinks, ice, books, fishing gear, clothing, coffee and baked goods, as well as an impressive selection of must-try ice cream. A fuel dock offers zero-ethanol gas and diesel and there is 15 and 30-amp power available on the docks. Like most Gulf Islands water is scarce on Galiano, so there is no water on the docks and no showers or laundry available for visiting boaters. For nearby explorations, both by sea and land, the marina is also home to scooter and kayak rentals. The Galiano Moped shed is located in the marina parking lot and rents mopeds and e-bikes hourly or daily. When we came to Galiano two summers ago we rented a scooter for a couple of hours and had a blast exploring the long stretches of country road snaking through the hills to the north end of the island—ask about the secret caves near Retreat Cove. Take advantage of the scooter and load up on supplies at the Daystar Market which sells fresh produce, bread and a selection artisanal goods. The Corner Store across the street is a licensed liquor store with groceries and snacks. Between the two, you can get most everything you need, so long as you can carry it back to the boat. Gulf Island Kayaking is located at the top of the ramp. Kayaks, paddleboards and canoes are available and are a great way to explore the bay out toward Phillimore Point or Gray Peninsula.

32 - JULY 2023

CULINARY ADVENTURES

The Hummingbird Pub is a short drive away and the famed Hummingbird Pub bus will pick you up from the entrance to the marine park or at the top of the road down to Montague Marina. The bus ride is a festive affair and if you’ve never experienced a musical ride with Tommy Transit, it’s definitely worth the price of admission (free, tips accepted). The bus makes return trips to the marina and park until 21:00.

For fine dining, Pilgrimme is a 10-minute walk from the marina. This acclaimed restaurant offers locally sourced farm-to-table food in a charming West Coast sylvan setting. They recently started serving naturally leavened sourdough pizza under the name Charmer. Reservations are recommended.

JULY 2023 - 33
Below: The Galiano Moped shed. The Hummingbird Pub.

We come to Montague every year or two, and for the past few years one of the main draws has been the Crane and Robin restaurant. With its idyllic setting overlooking the marina, it continues to draw boaters back for top-notch tacos and refreshing cocktails. We read online that the restaurant closes at 17:00 daily so after doublechecking our mooring we clambered off the boat and into the dinghy for the short row to the marine park dinghy dock. It’s nose-in only and for good reason. These docks get a lot of traffic on summer weekends.

The walk to Montague Marina and the Crane and Robin restaurant overlooking it, takes about 15 minutes. It’s a pleasant stroll and we stopped to take in the views overlooking Montague Harbour and to investigate the numerous tent caterpillar infestations enveloping the trees along the road.

We arrived at the restaurant just in the nick of time (or so we thought) only to discover a sign displaying updated hours: “Open until 20:00.”

Moorage Option 2 Marine Park Dock

An alternative to the marina is the park dock. The 60-metre-long linear dock offers first come first served side-tie moorage and provides easy access to the park and the campsites within. When we last visited the park, the dock was crammed full with many boats rafted two deep. There is no power or water at the park dock but there are pit toilets and garbage and recycling bins at the top of the ramp for paying guests. The docking fee is $2 per metre per night. Arrive early for your best chance to get a spot on summer weekends and be prepared to raft up. The park dock is a lively place in the summer, with kids jigging for perch off the wharf, folks strumming guitars and dinghies coming and going from the many boats anchored out. If the dock is full and you don’t feel like rafting, there are other options.

Moorage Option 3

Mooring Buoys

Gone are the days of questionably maintained moorings so we often choose to tie up to one of the buoys in the sheltered northwest end of the bay. Mooring is $14 a night and a park host will come by in a tender in the evening to collect fees. If you are away from the boat when the attendant comes around you can place your payment in the deposit vault at the top of the ramp. These buoys fill up on weekends, but if you arrive before 14:00 you stand a good chance of snagging one. For only $14 we appreciate avoiding the hassle of anchoring and having the quick access to shore. In the evening it’s hard to beat the view across the isthmus of Gray Peninsula as the sun sets behind the boats anchored on the other side.

34 - JULY 2023
A threesome of tacos from the Crane and Robin.

NAVIGATION

There is easy access to Montague through both the north and south entrances. The south entrance, between Phillimore Point and Julia Island is straightforward with minimal current flow in either direction. The north entrance, between Gray Peninsula and Parker Island, has a depth of 5.2 metres through the centre of the fairway. There’s a two-knot current through here at times. Watch for kayakers and paddleboarders and give the southern tip of Gray Peninsula a wide berth before turning in toward the park dock.

Several overhead cables cross both the south and north entrances to Montague Harbour; the vertical clearance through both entrances is 38 metres. Red and white spheres are attached to the cables to increase their visibility.

Montague Harbour Marina Phillimore Point Gray Peninsula Julia Is. Marine Park Dock

So, there was no need to rush but we were happy to be there early and it was a nice reminder that Galiano is still on “island time.”

After picking a table with the perfect mix of sun and shade we chatted with the proprietor who told us that the lease was renewed so the Crane and Robin isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

After dinner we walked back toward Montague Marine Park along the same road, this time noting the chipmunks scurrying among the rocks and downed trees. They provided cute (and noisy) entertainment. We had some time to kill before sunset, so we walked the looping path around Gray Peninsula (approximately 30 minutes) noting the numerous sand and shell beaches, ideal places to set up a picnic for a day of relaxation.

When we had circled back to the isthmus separating Gray Peninsula from Galiano, we found a log to sit against, set up our beach blanket, dug our feet into the shell beach and took in the last rays of the summer sun. We walked back through the campsites to the dinghy dock and rowed back to the boat where we settled in for a quiet evening aboard.

Tomorrow morning we’d be moving on. Another mooring buoy up for grabs.

36 - JULY 2023
The trail around Gray Peninsula is a great place to stretch your sea legs.

Moorage Option 4 Anchoring

This brings us to the final option, which is to anchor, and depending on weather conditions you have a couple sub-options here. The holding is good in Montague Harbour, but it does fill up with hundreds of boats anchored in Montague Harbour at any one time. Nevertheless, because of the size of the bay there is always room for one more. If you choose to anchor in the middle of the bay note that there is a seaplane terminal near the marina—watch for floatplanes taking off and landing. In settled conditions many boaters choose to anchor on the northwest side of Gray Peninsula. From here it is an easy dinghy ride to the shell midden beach which offers spectacular sunset views up Trincomali Channel. When we last visited, even this usually quiet anchorage had 20+ boats in it, plus day-trippers from Vancouver Island who motored over to enjoy the warm water fronting the beach.

TAVERNS

8 Taverns on the Sunshine Coast

Treat yourself and your crew to a burger and a brew at one of these top pubs

IIn the August, 2022 edition of PY, Cherie Thiessen introduced us to six great taverns in the Gulf Islands, several of which we have enjoyed ourselves.

Our Grand Banks 36 spends its winters at Coal Harbour Marina in downtown Vancouver, so we have a choice to make when we head out under the Lions Gate Bridge in the summer. Do we head for those pubs in the Gulf Islands, which involves crossing the Strait of Georgia, or do we head up the Sunshine Coast toward Desolation Sound? There’s no wrong answer. But here are eight taverns to draw you north

If we opt for the Sunshine Coast and Desolation Sound, our first (and last) stop is the Union Steamship Marina on Bowen Island. At trawler speed we can be tucked into Snug Cove in under two hours. This is a well-run marina with the best showers on the coast. The property was purchased by Rondi and Dorothy Dike in 1985 and is still managed by their daughter Oydis Peterson. At the top of the ramp is a large expanse of grass where people may be playing jenga, or beanbag toss (cornhole for our American visitors) or just sitting in Adirondack chairs watching the world go by. Across the lawn is a nice gift

store (with ice cream), laundry facilities and, of course, a pub.

Doc Morgan’s is named after the original owner of the building, a doctor from Vancouver. It has an extensive patio with lots of shade for hot summer days, and a cosy interior for cooler days in the spring and fall. It supports local brewers, distillers and wine makers, and hosts community events throughout the year, including “light up the cove” at Christmas.

A bowl of Doc’s crowded seafood chowder goes for $13. Pub fare starts at $18 for Pacific fish tacos and goes up to $29 for two-piece halibut and chips. Large plates start at $24 for cashew cream linguini and top out at $38 for a NY strip steak.

The Union Steamship Marina has a half-day rate so you can pop in just for lunch.

2Bowen Island Pub Bowen Island

There was a time when Glenn Cormier couldn’t find Bowen Island on a map but his wife Meredith has a long history there. In 2012, they bought the old Bowen Island Pub, which dated back to the late 1980s, and set about building a newer version right next door. The new pub opened in the spring of 2018, with a West Coast feel, and has tried hard to cater to the local community.

Their New England style salmon chowder sells for $12. There are burgers of course, running from $18 to $22, pizzas going for $31 to $34

for the large version, a kids menu offers the usual favourites and they do benny brunch on weekends from 11:30 to 14:30. There are TVs for watching sports and the bar gets busy for live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

For pub alternatives try Tuscany or Barcelona, located on the main street between Doc Morgan’s and the Bowen Island Pub. For breakfast you can pop into The Snug featuring coffee, muffins and sandwiches.

If you go to Snug Cove, keep an eye out for the ferry that runs between Bowen Island and Horseshoe Bay roughly every hour. The Bowen Island Pub is a 10-minute walk from the marina docks. It slightly uphill getting there but that means the walk home is easy.

Gramma’s Marine Pub Gibsons

There are two marinas to choose from when visiting Gibsons. Gibsons Marina caters mainly to pleasure craft and takes reservations. It has a small marine hardware store and good showers but is a short walk from the bars and restaurants.

We often opt for Gibsons Landing Harbour Authority, which caters more to commercial craft, but not exclusively. It’s first come, first served though so get there early. Gramma’s Pub is just up the ramp. The building began as a dance hall and went through several iterations before being purchased by the Janowski family in 1978. Apparently, Gramma Janowski enjoyed a pint!

You don’t go to Gramma’s for the ambience, although there is an enclosed porch looking out at Keats Island. Gramma’s is your basic pub but if you just

want a beer and a burger or to catch up on the Blue Jays, it serves the purpose well. They have loads of beer and cider from all over, but they really like to show off local breweries.

One summer weekend we couldn’t get into Gramma’s. Like a lot of other restaurants during Covid they were short-

staffed. No problem, we’ll have fish and chips to go. Problem, they were out of fish! We were lucky to get linguine vongole to go from Buono Osteria on Marine Drive. Other good options for dinner include Smitty’s Oyster House and Lunitas Mexican Eatery, both looking out over the marina.

Tapworks Brewing Company Gibsons

Six years ago, Geoff Gornall and two of his buddies quit perfectly good jobs in Vancouver, moving to Gibsons for lifestyle reasons and opening a craft brewery. At first it was just the three of them and their wives, now they employ as many as 45 people during peak season.

Tapworks Brewing is a short five-minute walk up the hill from the Gibsons Landing Harbour Authority dock—only one block above Marine Drive. They brew their own beer, including One Sailing Wait IPA, Crispy Buoy Craft Lager or Backwoods Hazy Pale Ale. Crispy Buoy won gold at the 2020 Canadian Brewing Awards and still lives up to the honour.

Tapworks’ menu is limited, but if it’s a patio kind of day, this is a great place for a beer and a burger. It has a nautical theme so boaters will feel right at home.

5 Grasshopper Pub Garden Bay

As you leave Gibsons heading up the Sunshine Coast, you have to cross Shoal Channel. There should be lots of water under you keel but keep an eye on your chart plotter. Incidentally, the ‘Sunshine Coast’ was a marketing ploy, created by Harry Roberts of Roberts Creek to promote tourism, and it seems to be working.

Northbound from Gibsons you are exposed to the Strait of Georgia on your port side, and houses along the coast on your starboard side. You’ll pass the community of Sechelt and if it’s lumpy we will duck in behind the Trail Islands for shelter.

Pass by Halfmoon Bay, sneak through Welcome Channel and around the corner to Smuggler Cove Marine Park or Secret Cove. There is no longer a pub at Secret Cove but there is a nice restaurant called the Upper Deck above the store at Secret Cove Marina.

From Secret Cove it’s a short ride to Pender Harbour where there are several options for overnight moorage. We have anchored in Garden Bay but the Garden Bay Pub, once a hive of activity, had fallen on hard times under new ownership and finally burned down in 2020. There was also a change of ownership at Irvines Landing and big plans for development that never materialized. That only leaves one pub option in Pender Harbour, but it’s a good one.

The Grasshopper Pub also burned down back in 2013 but was rebuilt. It is high up on the hillside overlooking the harbour, right on the highway so easily accessible by car. In fact, you can stay overnight at

the adjacent Pender Harbour Hotel if you need a night away from the boat.

Access is a little bit more challenging for boaters but it can be done. From your marina or anchorage, dinghy over to a small marina directly below the pub and hump it up the hill. And beware, it is up, but you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view.

A bowl of seafood chowder at the Grasshopper goes for $11. There are sandwiches and burgers of course, and main courses go from $20 for the liver and onions to $23 for the Cajun seafood linguine.

out over the marina and cabins for rent.

Peter and Suzanne Laurie bought the Backeddy in 2008. Peter has experience in hospitality and Suzanne has roots on the Sunshine Coast, so when they found out that the pub and marina were for sale, it got them thinking. They made an offer knowing full well that there was already an offer on the table and when that fell through, suddenly they were owners!

The pub is kid-friendly and dogs are welcome in the picnic area, which is also licensed. Peter confesses that the Backeddy is unlikely to win architectural awards so they rely on good food and great service to keep people coming back.

After dinner, you can hike to Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park to watch the rapids from the safety of the shore. It’s about an hours’ walk to the Roland Point Viewing Area. Stop at the Skookumchuck Bakery and Cafe for a cinnamon roll on your way.

There are fine dining options nearby at the Western Canada Wilderness Resort and the Ruby Lake Resort.

Forest Bistro and Lounge

Powell River

Until very recently there was a shortage of pubs in Powell River, at least down by the water. At one time there must have been a pub in the basement of the Marine Inn, just up the street from the Westview

Marina, but it has been closed for as long as we have been visiting Powell River.

There was a pub called in the old Westview Hotel, just on the corner of Marine Avenue, but we took one look inside and fled! These days, the pub has been replaced by the Forest Bistro and Lounge.

John and Jessica (soon-tobe) Walls bought the hotel in 2019. John is a chef who has worked up and down the West Coast but decided to settle in Powell River for quality-oflife reasons. The Forest Bistro is a gastro pub from 12:00 to 21:00, and a lounge from 21:00 till midnight. It is west facing, looking out over the harbour, and is a great place to have lunch or dinner.

Like a lot of small towns, the

arrival of a shiny new mall sucked some of the life out of Marine Avenue, but there are shops worth peeking into, and we like to provision at the Chopping Block. The town has a new development plan to try to breathe life back into Marine Avenue and the Forest Bistro fits right into that plan. Besides serving food and beverages, they host live music and theatre, fashion shows and various community events.

Another option, particularly on a hot summer day, is Costa del Sol—a 10-minute walk north on Marine Ave. It’s located in an old police station but dressed up with tile floors, stained glass and bright colours. There are tacos, of course, starting at two for $16, as well as burritos, quesadillas and enchiladas.

And for those who like it hot, there’s a Creole Caribe jambalaya bowl for $19.75. Oh, and there’s an assortment of tequila and mezcal as long as you’re in for the night. Costa del Sol doesn’t take reservations.

8 Lund Hotel Lund

The community of Lund is the last stop on Highway 101 that runs all the way from Tierra del Fuego in South America, and the marina is the last stop on your trip northbound before reaching Desolation Sound. Lund was settled in 1889 by the Thulin brothers who named it after a town in their native Sweden. They started with a store and a post office, followed by a hotel. The original Malaspina Hotel burned down (a common theme on the Sunshine Coast) but was rebuilt in 1918 and rechristened as the Lund Hotel.

The pub at the Lund Hotel, now owned by the Tla’amin First Nation, is still a meeting place for community members. For decades, Russell-theHermit was a fixture in the pub, occupying the third barstool on the right.

At one time there was a clash of cultures—tough as nails Scandinavian loggers and commercial fisherman mixing with hippies, tourists and bike gangs. Brawls were

not uncommon. Today there are fewer loggers and fisherman, and the hippies are now senior citizens so it’s safe to go up for a pint.

Occasionally a helicopter

lands out front, scattering menus, napkins and umbrellas. Keep an eye out for Oprah Winfrey.

Like Gibsons Harbour Authority and Westview in Powell River, Lund is a community owned and operated marina. They don’t take reservations, but they won’t turn you away either. You can’t miss the hotel and pub. The store, once incorporated into the hotel building, has moved to spacious new quarters just out back.

Even if we aren’t stopping overnight, we’ll deke into Nancy’s for one of the famous

cinnamon buns. For a dining option, check out the Boardwalk, run by Rayanne and Roy Blackwell. They moved to Lund in 2010 after running Mr. Pickwick Fish and Chips in downtown Vancouver for many years.

If your travels take you up toward Desolation Sound this summer, you’ll find plenty of beer, burgers, tacos and cinnamon rolls. So add these pubs to your summer cruising itinerary and enjoy the best of the Sunshine Coast.

The EX-FOREST SERVICE VESSELS

From workboat to recreational craft

Caroline McDonald Chris and Marion aboard Dean Ranger at Active Pass.

It’s rare that we think of boats and forestry as being intertwined. But in British Columbia, with its vast forests, islands aplenty and lengthy coastline, the provincial Forest Branch became a boat owner and boatbuilder over a century ago.

At the 2022 (Labour Day) Classic Boat Festival, held in Victoria after a two-year pandemic-triggered gap, six members of the Ex-Forest Service Vessel Squadron showed their vintage pedigrees, putting on last year’s “live exhibit” to promote knowledge of our province’s storied marine/forestry history.

The Ex-Forest Service vessels may resemble other classic wooden boats, but their numbers—about 200 served for more than 50 years—formed a cohesive group of vessels and rangers that constitute an important part of BC’s shared forest and maritime history. An estimated 39 vessels survive.

In 1912, the BC government created the Forest Branch, designed to bring order to— and consistent revenue from—the province’s

forests. According to historian Thomas Roach, the Forest Branch was to be the “Steward of the People’s Wealth.” Before 1912, he wrote, BC’s “few public foresters exerted little control over cutting on crown lands” and “revealed a sordid tale of overcutting, erosion and fire… as well as skulduggery in the laying out of timber lease boundaries.”

The first chief forester was Harvey Reginald MacMillan (later of MacMillan Bloedel fame), who established a head office in Victoria, with 11 districts covering the province. A management plan and licensing practices were created over the following years. Timber cruising, defined as “the process of measuring the volume and quality of standing and down timber before it has been harvested,” was carried out by rangers and assistant rangers—some of them reluctant mariners. They also watched over the Canada-US border to prevent the illegal export of logs. It’s estimated that about 30 boats would be patrolling at any one time.

IN THE EARLY days, rangers travelled the mainland’s forests mostly on horseback. But

48 - JULY 2023

to monitor logging operations on BC’s coast, the renamed Forest Service needed a fleet of ranger launches. Some early launches began as yachts and were converted to workboats; later, the Forest Service commissioned various boatbuilders to produce vessels; eventually the service launched its own boatyard.

After first establishing a small boatbuilding venture at Quadra Island’s Heriot Bay, they switched to Sonora Island’s Thurston Bay in 1914, where they constructed and maintained their launches. They also built bunkhouses, a marine ways and float homes for the workers and their families. But 27 years later, the remote location and what we’d now call “supply chain” and “worker recruitment” issues led the service to move the yard to the Fraser River’s North Arm. Their last boat, the 48-foot Coast Ranger, was completed in 1966, although the yard continued to maintain the fleet.

BOATS WERE BUILT in various sizes and to different designs. They offered rangers a place to live for weeks, as offices for record keeping, as transporters of equipment

and tree saplings, as assessors of timber stumpage, as fire detectors and for bringing much appreciated news to isolated loggers.

As the aging wooden vessels grew more difficult to service and technologies changed, fibreglass and aluminum hulls began to replace them. The Forest Branch auctioned some of their vintage boats in 1974 and sold the last batch by 1985.

In 1992, owners created the Ex-BC Forest Service Vessel Squadron and held the first rendezvous; the organization now counts 16 active members. In 2012, they all received badges commemorating the 100-year-old Forest Service formation and added them to the old, logoed plaques on their vessels.

THE SIX BOATS that participated in 2022’s Classic Boat Show all have dedicated owners who revere their vessels’ history. Doug Mitchell, who owns Forest Ranger II, stated emphatically that the ex-forest launches are not yachts. “We own former workboats that never reach yacht status,” he said. “We feel an obligation to the old girls.

JULY 2023 - 49
Marianne Scott X5

We use paint, not varnish. They’re workboats we are proud to maintain. They’re workboats with a new life, a second life which adds another dimension to boating.”

His 45-footer was constructed in 1953, and like most service launches, is powered by a GM (Jimmy) diesel engine, which he has rebuilt. The 3-71, 4-71, 6-71, and 8-71 two-stroke diesel engines were basic and popular due to their rugged construction, reliability and their widespread use in other equipment, making parts easy to find. That said, the engines are noisy and are sometimes called, “screaming Jimmys.”

Now 69 years old, Forest Ranger II previously hosted a crew of three (ranger/skipper, cook/deckhand and engineer). She served in the Bute and Knight Inlet areas, then was stationed in Campbell River until being auctioned off in 1985. Mitchell has owned her for the past 30 years and has continually repaired and improved her. Despite the vessel’s non-yacht status, after chipping out rot, he finished his main cabin’s walls with sapele, an African mahogany-type wood often used in glitzy mega-yachts. He put epoxy resin on the decks to forestall water intrusion, replaced galvanized tanks with stainless, added a holding tank and AIS. Based in Sidney, she’s made voyages to Haida Gwaii and around Vancouver Island. “We have a love of old boats,” said Mitchell. “We are the custodians who have an obligation to look after the vessels and keep them going.”

SOOKE-BASED CHRIS West owns Dean Ranger, a 48-footer designed by Robert Allen and constructed in 1957. Once a Games Protection patrol vessel, she spent most of her Forest Service life in the areas around Ocean Falls and Kitimat. Auctioned off in 1984, the vessel is constructed of yellow cedar planking on oak frames, with a fir keel, teak and gumwood brightwork and the standard Jimmy engine. “These engines were used in the landing craft on the Normandy beaches,” West said. “My boat’s Jimmy 6-71 is reliable and I can get filters anywhere.

“I bought my ‘retired workboat’ in 2001,” West continued. “She carried some steel stabilizer arrangement on the sides that pinned down the boat and solidified her in the water at speed. They’re called ‘batwings.’ I cleaned and painted them for the first couple of years, then removed them, gained a knot or so, reduced my electrolysis issues as well as my bill for zincs!”

As in other vintage wooden boats, West has continually upgraded her to contemporary standards, adding a holding tank and new water and wiring systems. A bow thruster makes her easier to dock. Two layers of treated, half-inch cedar-plywood make up the deck, which is finished with Deckote, an acrylic elastomeric coating.

“I see other old wooden boats,” said West. “They’re lovely but they just don’t have that history of serving on the coast. That’s what I like about my old ranger launch.”

MITCHELL WOLLASTON BROUGHT Forest Surveyor to Victoria Harbour from Seattle—at 65 feet she is the largest of the rendezvous vessels. She has a high bow and her wheelhouse sits atop the main cabin. Built in 1942, the octogenarian first served as a picket patrol boat during the Second World War. She was surplussed in 1973; then family disputes and the cost of maintenance led to a bank owning her. “I became a marina owner by accident,“ said Wollaston. “So I moor Forest Surveyor at my Ewing Street Marina amidst the houseboats and liveaboards. I just can’t stand seeing the old boats rotting away. So in 2015 and ‘16, I talked the bank into donating her to a museum I established—the Steam Engine Museum—and I maintain her.

He extensively refurbished Forest Surveyor’s wiring, plumbing, diesel engine (Detroit 8V-71) and transmission. “We found a whole lot of problems,” he said. ‘Extensive rot in the stern and planking. So we did a lot of replanking, caulking and painting.”

For Wollaston, his ex-forest boat isn’t just a museum piece. “I’ve taken her to Alaska,” he said, “and I offer rides on Puget Sound. And now I’ve brought her to Victoria. She continues to live.”

CHAD GIESBRECHT BOUGHT Silver Fir in 2012. “When I was growing up my dad used to point out the forest boats,” he told me. “We always had boats and did a lot of fishing. I went to what was the Silva Bay Shipyard School on Gabriola so that helped me decide to buy Silver Fir. She is one

of the “blimps.”

According to Michael Coney, who wrote Forest Ranger, Ahoy! (1983), a history of the forest fleet and its rangers, 11 of these 32 to 35-foot blimps were built in the 1920s. They had a nine-foot beam, drew only 2’ 9” and could thus access shallow waters. They sported a wheelhouse and a long, low coach roof. “We have to look back to the early days, when people realized that a secondary boat was needed,” Coney wrote. “A boat less than the lordly ranger launch yet more than a runabout.” They became the Forest Branch’s first launches built specifically for assistant rangers. Perhaps because of their long coach roofs, one ranger blurted out, “She looks like a bloody great blimp.” The name stuck. Once the early blimps succumbed to time, second versions emerged.”

Stroking his ample, reddish beard, Giesbrecht said, “Silver Fir was in dire need of cosmetics. Her previous owner hadn’t loved her for a few years.”

For the past few summers, Giesbrecht’s boat has recaptured the reason she was constructed. “I’ve served as fire warden, informing people that they cannot light fires during the dry season,” he said. “I’ve patrolled roughly from Gabriola to Salt Spring, building relationships with islanders, watching for fires.”

ABOARD CHERRY II, Bob Brereton said that his wife Kate and he wanted a wooden boat—a wooden boat with some coastal history. They found one at a cost of $12,000. A blimp like Silver Fir, she was built in 1946, served in

Campbell River and on various lakes. The Forest Service sold her in 1978, and after several owners, the Breretons bought her in 2006.

Cherry II is constructed of cedar and fir on oak, has a mahogany-plywood house, and measures almost 35 feet. “She was in rough shape and it took big bucks to seal the hull,” said Brereton, a former firefighter and 3rd engineer on a steamship. “I did the rest of the work myself including adding sound insulation to the GM engine compartment.”

“We love the boat,” Brereton continued. “We moor her on our private dock on the Gorge and we work to keep her afloat. Basically, these launches were well-built. Good sea boats that’ve stood the test of time.”

OAK II WAS the third blimp that attended the Classic Boat Festival. Constructed in 1952 at the North Vancouver Marine Station, the 34-footer’s hull is made of red cedar above the waterline, yellow cedar below the waterline and oak ribbing for support.

Sechelt-based owner Lorne Berman acquired Oak II in the late ‘70s and moors her in Secret Cove. “It took 16 hours to arrive in Victoria,” he said. “Oak II can run at eight knots, but this time I kept her down to six, taking my time. It gave me a quieter, smoother ride. And it saved me a huge

amount of fuel—instead of two gallons an hour, I burned only 1.3 gallons.”

It was a tugboat captain that put Berman onto getting an Ex-Forest Service vessel. “He told me RivTow had bought several of them for resale,” said Berman. “I ran down to Vancouver and saw Oak II. When we took her out, she broke her mast against a bridge. They reduced the price by $100. I think I paid about $14,000 for her.”

Berman said he’d been looking for a slow and steady boat, not a flashy speed machine. “The tugboat captain told me these were well-built and well-maintained vessels. And so she has proved herself to be. I’ve always wanted to keep her going.”

Over the last 40-plus years, whenever Berman had to replace parts, he would copy the original. “Say, I had to change a rusty railing, the new, stainless railing would be designed to look the same,” he said. “I want to maintain the boat’s original character.”

THE EX-FOREST SERVICE vessels constitute an influential part of the province’s history—a tale of the forests’ timber and the boats made from that timber keeping track of our natural riches. Keep your eyes out for these maritime treasures as you cruise the Salish Sea this summer.

Dogs might not always make the best sailors, but their tail-wagging enthusiasm always adds fun to a boating trip. Besides, they wouldn’t dare let you leave them behind

54 - JULY 2023

In our years of cruising, Bill and I have often had a canine crewmember with us. Our first dog was a plucky Scottish terrier named Tuck. His was a seafaring life, having moved onto our liveaboard Spencer 35 while still a puppy. In the course of his waterborne travels Tuck faced all sorts of weather and was happiest in the cockpit when underway, even in wet and windy conditions. He crossed major bodies of water, including the Gulf of Alaska, and strolled the remote shorelines of such

faraway places as Geographic Harbor and Kodiak Island, sniffing the air for grizzlies before hopping out of the dinghy. Whenever we pulled into an Alaskan fishing port, the local dogs—usually three times Tuck’s size and eager for a quick sniff—were greeted with a snarl as he brushed them aside. Tuck had attitude, in droves. And like all pets, he was a treasured member of the family. I still have the collection of Christmas sweaters my mom knit for him, one of which Tuck modeled for his cover photo on Pacific Yachting

JULY 2023 - 55

(December 1993). When Tuck died at age 14, a boating friend penned us a poem in his memory and Pacific Yachting ran an obit on the editorial page.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, Tuck was a hard act to follow when, a decade later, Bill and I got another dog. This decision came after months of pleading from our nine-year-old son John. Eventually, we relented and began pondering what breed to get. Our friend and mentor Bill Wolferstan recommended a wire fox terrier. He and his wife Clementien had one and it was apparently very adept at canal barging in Europe. They knew a breeder in Victoria and a five-month-old puppy was available. Her name was Amelia

but we promptly shortened it to Amy. It was hard not to compare Amy to Tuck, and in many ways she shone. Tender, playful and bursting with energy, she was a lively addition to the household that first winter. When spring arrived, we took her to our sailboat, moored at a marina on the Fraser River, to acquaint her with being on a boat. That’s when Amy’s talent for leaping gave us a bit of a shock. We were with her in the cockpit when she hopped onto the gunwale to take a look over the side. She must have thought the silty water was muddy ground because, after a moment’s hesitation, she jumped—into the river. Despite her initial surprise, Amy immediately displayed her swimming

skills by paddling—against a flood current—back to the boat. Bill was able to scoop her on board before the current swept her away.

After that incident, we hoped she had learned her lesson about jumping overboard. But, to riff on a lyric from Showboat, “fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly and wire fox terriers gotta leap.” On Amy’s first boating trip to the Gulf Islands, she exhibited her agility at every anchorage. Not only did she delight in leaping from the boat into the inflatable dinghy, she would perform the reverse move when we returned from shore. To our amazement she would spring from the dinghy’s bow as it drew close to the boat, somehow propelling herself up and over several

56 - JULY 2023

feet of freeboard and threading her body in between the rope lifelines like a pole vaulter clearing the bar, but without the aid of a pole.

THIS WAS SOMETHING Tuck, with his short legs and stocky body, would never have tried. He always waited to be lifted in and out of the dinghy, his splayed toes often snagging one of the rope lifelines. Upon approaching shore, Tuck would hop out of the din ghy only when we had reached ankledeep water and even then he would hesitate, seemingly reluctant to get his paws wet, usually waiting for some one to take the painter and pull the dinghy further onto the beach. Amy, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to

leap into the water and swim the remaining distance. She would continue paddling even when lifted clear of the water, her dripping wet legs cycling through the air.

We all marveled at Amy’s athleticism but bemoaned her nervous energy when the boat was underway. She did not like sailing. Just the sight of a sail being raised would send her hurtling down the companionway into the cabin to hide. However, like most things in life, Amy’s nervousness while underway was manageable. Then, to Amy’s dismay, we got a bigger boat—a Tayana 48.

Her agitation began the instant the engine started. It was much louder than the smaller diesel on our previous boat and the sound of it thundering

into action would send Amy dashing to the forward cabin. Soon the rattling of anchor chain would drive her aft to hide in the shower stall, where her bed was tucked under a bench seat. She seemed OK there until, heaven forbid, the sails were raised and the flapping of sailcloth, snapping of lines and grinding of winches would flush her out of her den in search of human company.

Yet, despite Amy’s anxiety about sailing, as soon as we reached our destination and the anchor was set, she was back in her element, eager for the next dinghy ride. Which brings me to another issue Amy had with the bigger boat. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks and Amy, at the age of five, now had to relearn her signature move of leaping into the dinghy.

Such a move required greater precision because of the boat’s higher freeboard and this was something Amy miscalculated. The first time she tried it I was in the galley making morning coffee when I heard Bill on the aft deck ordering Amy to ‘stay’ followed by the sound of a loud splash. Amy had missed her mark.

We learned to promptly strap on her life jacket and tether her to a stanchion until the dinghy was ready and manned for heading ashore. Despite these precautions, John’s logbook entries from our first voyage in the bigger boat include a number of Amy’s failed aquatic feats.

Queen Charlotte Sound made for an uncomfortable ride. Upon reaching Rivers Inlet and anchoring in the cove sheltered by Fury Island, we were all happy to have completed that leg of the trip. Amy, however, was nowhere to be found. We knew she was hiding somewhere and sure enough, upon calling her name, the muffled jingling of dog tags could be heard coming from beneath the propane stove. Somehow, she had flattened herself like a cat into this tight space and now appeared to be stuck. However, with a bit of coaxing, she was able to crawl out on her belly.

Yet nothing, not even the rolling seas of Queen Charlotte Sound, can douse Amy’s enthusiasm for boating once it’s time to go ashore in search of adventure. And what an adventure she had on Calvert Island when we hiked the trail from Pruth Bay to West Beach—a stunning stretch of beach with ocean swells sparkling in the sunlight as they rolled onto shore. This is where Amy found her nirvana.

Terriers like to dig, and Amy couldn’t believe her luck when she trotted onto this beautiful, deserted beach and felt the fine sand beneath her paws. She galloped along the edge of the surf with the boys, then ran back to Bill and me strolling at a slower pace, then caught up again with the jogging boys, then sprinted back to us. When she finally stopped running, she started digging. Sand flew as she furiously burrowed down in search of some elusive, nonexistent prey. At last, exhausted, she flopped on her side beside Bill, who was now sitting at the base of a smooth rock face and lay there as contented as a dog can possibly be.

I’m sure it never crossed her mind that in a week’s time she would be making the dreaded return trip past Cape Caution. Dogs live in the moment, which is probably why they enjoy life to the fullest. No wonder we humans love them so much.

Understanding Fuel Senders

And tips for choosing the right one

Knowing how much fuel is in the tank(s) is essential for the safety of a vessel— running out of fuel at a critical moment, such as while navigating a tidal passage or entering a busy marina, could put the vessel and crew in immediate danger.

Fortunately, there are many ways to measure the quantity of fuel in tanks, even tanks with custom shapes. Most use a sender inside the tank which measures the fuel level and sends that information electrically to a fuel gauge.

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL SENDERS

Float Arm Fuel Sender

The rise or fall of a float-arm inside the tank varies the electrical resistance in the circuit, which moves the needle in a fuel gauge as the level of fuel in the tank changes.

Capacitance Fuel Sender

This type of fuel sender uses the physical properties of capacitance to accurately measure the level of fuel in a tank. Capacitance senders usually have an outer tube and a small inner tube and can be supplied up to two metres (6.5 feet) in length. The tubes can be cut to the fit the depth of a fuel tank.

Capacitance is the ability of two metals held close together, but electrically separate, to hold an electrical charge when supplied with electrical current. Immersed in a liquid, such as electrically non-conducting diesel, the capacitance of the two metals changes according to the level of the liquid. This can then be converted by electronics into resistance (ohms) and displayed on a gauge.

Magnetic Reed Switch Fuel Sender

A magnetic reed switch closes when a magnet is near. In a fuel sender, many switches are built into a ladder, each wired to a different size of resistor, and a magnet is placed inside a free moving float. When this float rises or falls with the level of fuel, a different switch in the ladder is closed and current flows through a specific resistor. This changes the voltage in the fuel gauge circuit, moving the needle in the fuel gauge. The highest resistance (ohms) shows the tank is empty, the lowest that the tank is full.

Ultrasonic Fuel Sender

An ultrasonic fuel sender works in the same way as a vessel’s depth sounder. A small piezoelectric transducer:

1) Sends out a sound wave (usually at 40 kHz—far above human hearing).

2) Receives the wave’s echo after it bounces off the surface of the liquid.

3) Measures the difference in time between the signal out and the echo return and calculates the distance the sound wave travelled.

4) An electronic unit then calculates the level of fuel in the tank by subtracting the distance travelled from the total depth of the tank.

5) This is then converted into voltage or resistance (ohms) and displayed on a gauge.

Not all ultrasonic transducers (sensors) work with metal tanks. If the sound waves might bounce off the sides of an oddly-shaped tank, a focus tube can be fitted which directs the sound wave downwards.

Hydrostatic Pressure Fuel Sender

This sender works in the same way as an oil pressure sender—pressure on a diaphragm alters the resistance in the gauge’s electrical circuit. However, the sender is not measuring fuel pressure ; instead it is measuring the fuel’s hydrostatic pressure—the weight (or height) of fuel in the tank.

Gauge Pressure sender

Hydrostatic pressure is the “weight” of a liquid due to gravity—ie. pressure increases in deeper water due to the weight of the water above. The more fuel in the tank, the higher the hydrostatic pressure.

TYPES OF NON-ELECTRICAL SENDERS

Calibrated Dipstick

Dipping a stick to the bottom of a tank is the simplest and most reliable way to find the level of fuel in a tank, though less convenient than other methods. The method does require access to the tank and the dipstick needs to be calibrated by adding a known quantity of fuel to an empty tank and marking the dipstick; eg. 1/4 depth of dipstick = 20 litres, 1/2 depth = 40 litres. This method works well with odd-shaped tanks.

JULY 2023 - 63

Pneumatic Fuel Gauge

A simple gauge uses a manual push-button pump to inject air through a small tube from the gauge to the bottom of the fuel tank. The more fuel in the tank, the greater the resistance caused by the hydrostatic pressure (height of fuel). A calibration card is used to convert the pressure reading on the gauge into the quantity of fuel.

Sight Glass / Liquid Level Gauge

A traditional sight glass (liquid level gauge) is a clear tube installed on the outside of a tank, connected to the bottom of the tank and either connected to the top of the tank or open to the air. Atmospheric pressure ensures the height of diesel is the same in the tube as in the tank. A valve should be fitted at the bottom in case the tube breaks. The tube may be glass or a clear polyurethane fuel line and should be protected.

SELECTING A FUEL SENDER

Selecting the “best” fuel sender for a specific boat depends on several factors—and maybe some compromise, just like selecting any equipment for a boat. These factors include:

Accuracy / Reliability

Using a dipstick is the most accurate

and reliable way to check the fuel level of a tank; there is little to fail. It is also the least convenient and needs enough headroom above the tank for the dipstick. Senders without a float (such as capacitance and ultrasonic) have no moving parts, are more reliable but are considerably more expensive.

Tank Shape

A float arm sender works well in shallow, regular-shaped tanks. The float arm needs to be able to swing down, without interference from a baffle, almost to the bottom of the tank (leaving a small fuel reserve above the fuel pickup). If the shape of the tank is irregular, a sender with a float or a hydrostatic sender will likely give inaccurate readings unless it can be manually calibrated for the specific tank. (Mid-depth in one part of the tank may not be half the tank’s fuel capacity). The walls of a narrow tank or baffles may interfere with the ultrasonic signal.

Convenience

Some senders, such as a pneumatic gauge and a simple dipstick, must be manually calibrated—the level of fuel in the tank marked off against measured quantities of fuel. Though simple, these are not as convenient as electrical senders.

A sender must be matched to its dis-

play gauge—typically either 240-33 ohms or 0-180 ohms or adjustable or digital. Check before choosing the sender or replace the gauge.

Cost

Prices vary from the price of a wooden dowel to several hundred dollars. The cost of installation and potentially a new gauge must also be calculated.

Purpose and Preference

The intended purposes of a vessel can also influence which sender to select. A vessel going offshore requires a more robust and more reliable sender than a vessel motoring a few miles to the start of a sail race. Some skippers want low-tech, others prefer high-tech precision.

A Tale of Resurrection

What is the value of a 27-foot sailboat, in a time when many marinas are reconfiguring for 30 to 60-footers? I would suggest quite a bit, especially

Win the case of one Hotfoot 27 named Haytor. This is the story of how a yacht club community rallied to bring a special little boat back from the brink—to live on and sail for many days to come!

FIRST, A LITTLE general history of the Hotfoot 27, a Canadian sailboat that was designed by Doug Hemphill in 1981, and built with fibreglass by Hotfoot Boats, right here on Vancouver Island. The roots, or family tree of the

27, could undoubtedly be traced back to another small speedster from the mid seventies, the J-24. Doug’s first design was the Hotfoot 24, similar to the J, but with a weighted daggerboard instead of a fixed keel. I believe three of these were built out of cold molded wood, one of them, Arkle, is nicely restored and still raced today. The Hotfoot 27 proved a great success, selling well and spawning the larger Hotfoot 31 and smaller Hotfoot 20. Each of

these designs also proved successful, but alas the economic downturn of the late ‘80s spelled the end of Hotfoot boats and much of the production sailboat industry in Canada. The Hotfoot 20 molds were sold to a company in California, the deck and rig modified, to live on as the Ultimate 20. The Hotfoot 27 was a great all-around performer with many regatta wins through the decades by boats who’s names many local racer would recog -

nize; Fetish, Jaguar, Horizon, Caliente, NVS, Footloose, Slick and yes, Haytor. I had my first Hotfoot 27 experiences racing with the late Bill Lloyd on Footloose, back in 1988. I’d just moved to Victoria to work as a sailmaker. Bill was a very good sailor, but he lived up in Shawnigan and often couldn’t make it down to race. His generosity with Footloose was pretty amazing, letting Andria Scanlan, Aubrey Eichel, myself, and others take the boat out for Wednesday night races, Sunday racing and even regattas. The Hotfoot was the perfect, easy-to-throw-a-crew-together race boat. Sometimes there were five or six who would show up, sometimes three or even two. I have great memories of friendships forged and fun racing from those early Hotfoot 27 experiences and to this day, it’s still one of my favourite rides.

THIS STORY IS about one particular Hotfoot 27 Haytor, which returned to Victoria after Tim Knight, Don Sargent and Ken Pohl located her up island, sitting unused for the better part of the last decade. The trio cleaned her up, redid some rigging, replaced some gear and presto, the perfect post Covid club race boat! Unfortunately, there was a small setback to the program. When on the way out to a race start on a puffy Wednesday night, Haytor was t-boned by a 30-footer. A total accident, neither boat saw the other, the result was a big shark bite out of Haytor’s port side. It was a setback for sure, but the partnership was undeterred, repairs were undertaken and she was soon back racing again in Royal Vic’s around the buoys and distance races— with some good success, I might add.

FAST FORWARD TO the Rum Race, boxing day 2022. This is an annual affair, an always well attended pursuit race around Discovery Island. The day began in a nice puffy westerly

with a fleet of 20 or so, including four Hotfoot 27s. Rounding the island counterclockwise was the call and as the race progressed the wind gradually died away to nothing and then shifted 180 degrees to the east. The lead group of boats, which included Haytor and Fetish, had worked in along the north edge of Chatham Islets trying to find favourable current. During this time, boats were pointing in all directions, waiting for the next zephyr to appear—an oh so familiar rock hopping scenario, that most of us are quite familiar with. The combination of little steerage and strong current, found Haytor a little too close to Strongtide and well, you know what’s next… bang! Hey, we’ve all been there. You know the saying “There’s only two types of boats… those that have run aground, and those that will run aground.” It’s never fun, and it’s often a bit of a surprise. The good news, Haytor was only doing a couple of knots and appeared to barely slow down. At this point the easterly was beginning to fill, and the catspaws were turning into a nice seven to 10 knots. I was sailing on Alchemist that day and as we sailed past Haytor, both under spinnaker, I glanced over and noticed that only one of the crew was on deck and that they were pointed back toward the club, rather than to the finish line off Cattle Point. The boat seemed to be sailing fine though. After finishing, the fleet returned to the club. I noticed Haytor was over at the hoist with slings in place, which seemed odd, as she wasn’t a dry sailed boat. Then a collective of expletives as Haytor was lifted. As the hull cleared the water surface we could see that the keel was not there. “Holy s***! The aftermath and inspection revealed a large hole where the keel had been and the remnants of the keel stub. Credit to the crew, who somehow stemmed the inflow of water and nursed Haytor back to the hoist. Now what?

So, as would happen in these situations, an insurance adjuster looks at the damage and evaluates the cost of repair. Haytor was clearly a write off, as the economics of a professional yard repair didn’t add up. It’s always a sad thing when a good boat’s sailing days are done, but wait. Maybe there’s a solution. Full credit to those with the vision, who saw and opportunity, when most would have just let Haytor go to the scrap bin. Step 1: Salvage the keel… Check! Step 2: Acquire the boat from the insurance company… Check! Step 3: Bring in the experts, Campbell Black from Blackline, Dave Richardson and Doug Hemphill to survey and evaluate the possibility of repair… Check!

Inshore Race. On Monday the boat was launched. On Tuesday the Rig was back on and on Wednesday the survey was completed. The verdict was better and stronger than new! On Thursday, new insurance was acquired and on Friday the PHRF certificate was given. Then the outboard went back in, the safety gear was stored, the sails were inspected (some patching required) and the boat was ready to go. Whew!

Step 4: Recruit people with the skills and time to rebuild the keel stub and repair the boat. Enter Vidas Stukas, Dennis Woodward, Ken Pohl, Paul Gibson, Dave Vogelaar, Ben Power, Nick Banks, Gerry Weisgerber and more (sorry if I missed you). There were of course some skeptics and naysayers, but once the ball was rolling, support for the reclamation project grew!

SOME 600 HOURS later, after a huge effort by the team headed by Vidas, the keel was back on and the rudder and transom were also repaired and upgraded. The materials for the project cost between $3,000 and $4,000. Now, this was a week before Swiftsure, Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s commodore, Stephanie Bacon was determined to sail Haytor in the

STEPHANIE, ASSEMBLED A crew made up of Connie, a first time racer, Matt, a new member from Kingston, Roger, a long time racer, and yours truly. As we motored out to the start line, it occurred to me, how wonderful to be a part of such a positive project. It would have been an easy thing to just let Haytor go, but that would have been a shame. This is a story of resurrection and rebirth. A locally designed and built boat living to sail and race another day, thanks to the extreme efforts of the sailing community at our club. What could be better than that! So, the cherry on top, we made it to the start of the inshore and competed well in Division 1 against a fleet that included two other Hotfoot 27s and a Hotfoot 31. When the wind came up, the genoa grew a few more holes so Matt and Connie patched them on the downwind leg but we found our footing and sailed well as a new team. The boat was solid and performed just like it could and we won the day! How’s that for a feel good story.

The best part, this is only the beginning for Haytor at our club. The hope is that this boat that refused to die will provide our members and friends a boat to learn on, day sail, cruise, race and experience this great sport we’re all so privileged to be a part of. Thank you to everyone involved in the project who donated their valuable time, effort and materials. Good sailing, see you on the water sometime soon!

Summer Fishing Update

Three events and their potential impacts on this year’s salmon fishery

Show each will play out, and what the cumulative impact on recreational salmon angling and salmon recovery will be.

MARK SELECTIVE FISHERIES APPROVED

So far, 2023 has been confusing and frustrating, yet potentially beneficial for BC’s marine recreational anglers. Three seemingly unrelated events are influencing this uncertain environment. However, no one knows exactly

After multiple frustrating years of rejected fishing proposals, a few modest mark selective fisheries (MSF) have been approved in important angling areas. Mark selective fishing depends on marking enough hatchery reared salmon, usually chinook and coho, so they can be retained by fisheries.

All unmarked salmon are considered wild and must be returned to the ocean, where they hopefully survive to spawn thereby contributing to weak stock recovery.

The standard mark for a hatchery salmon is a clipped adipose fin, which is the small fleshy appendage located between the dorsal and tail fins. Finclipping is done at hatcheries, manually or mechanically, prior to the young salmon’s seaward migration. This mark is a common identifier in many fisheries.

Mark selective fisheries require some

70 - JULY 2023
COLUMN THE FISHING FIX

combination of enough marked salmon and zero or very low stocks of concern located in the fishing area. The objective is to rebuild salmon runs while providing modest angling opportunities. Fortunately, the US is required by law to mark nearly 100 percent of its hatchery chinook and coho. Unfortunately, Canada currently marks only about 15 percent of its production.

Consequently, MSF candidates are presently limited to areas with a high proportion of US fish. These include: The southern Strait of Georgia, the Juan de Fuca Strait from Victoria to Port Renfrew and Vancouver Island’s west coast.

If Canada started marking more salmon immediately it would take three years for those chinook and 1.5 years for coho to provide any benefits. Canada’s failure to mark enough salmon, combined with chinook-non-retention, has created a situation where most hatchery salmon cannot be retained.

Failing to mark most hatchery salmon may also be weakening the genetic integrity of some wild stocks. This is because wild and hatchery salmon have been spawning together for years without a visual means of identifying one from the other. It is a vexing concern.

The approved MSFs, located adjacent to Vancouver Island’s southeast coast, were only allowed because they posed minimal risk to chinook stocks of concern. They also have acceptable hatchery mark rates, which minimizes incidental mortalities (IMs) that would occur if too many wild salmon are released before keeping a marked chinook.

These proposals are seen as baby steps to re-starting chinook angling opportunities in future years, provided weak stock protection criteria are met. However, according to recreational fishery advisors, there are valid questions about why other, equally safe 2023 MSF proposals were declined.

MULTI-YEAR UBC INCIDENTAL MORTALITY STUDY NEARS COMPLETION

Incidental mortalities (IMs) are salmon deaths which occur as a consequence of injuries sustained from hooking and handling. These deaths may not be apparent but can happen minutes, hours or days after release. Until now most studies have focused on short term assessment of incidental mortality. The most comprehensive BC recreational study was done in the 1980s and 1990s by Terry Gjernes at Nanaimo’s Pacific Biological Station. He assessed immediate mortalities and injury categories. He then kept the surviving salmon in pens to record short-term post release mortality. However, mortality beyond these few days of confinement remained poorly understood.

What do IMs have to do with mark selective fisheries? If incidental mortalities are too high relative to the retained catch they create situations where releasing wild salmon is more costly than keeping wild salmon. It has also become a political football game pitting certain environmental nongovernment organizations against BC’s marine salmon anglers. These groups regularly claim that actual release mortality rates are far higher than the current rates being applied.

The IM picture will be clearer this winter when the results from studies that began in 2019 will be made public, according to UBC’s Stephen Johnston.

To date, the study has sampled and released 616 chinook that were caught using various combinations of recreational fishing gear and fish handling methods.

Johnston explains, “this builds on the work completed by Terry Gjernes, by expanding beyond the short term scope.” Johnston noted that keeping salmon in pens for observation, as Gjernes did, is a “two sided coin.” Extra mortalities do occur because the salmon are stressed in this unfamiliar pen environment, however, they are isolated from immediate post-release natural predation.

The research team tags each salmon. The tags allow them to be tracked by acoustic telemetry using stationary receivers along their expected migration routes. Their behavior can be monitored as they cross the arrays which provide information on each individual fish.

According to Johnston, “these tracking studies allow us to investigate survival patterns across longer time periods and spatial scales.” The studies will undergo rigorous peer-review prior to public release. Computer visualizations for each year’s results can be found at kintama.com/visualizations/.

US FEDERAL JUDGE CLOSES ALASKAN TROLL FISHERIES

US federal judge Richard Jones has thrown a wrench into plans for southeast Alaskan commercial summer and winter chinook troll fisheries. The basis of the judge’s decision is that Alaska’s fishing plans did not provide adequate protections for Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs), in violation of marine mammal conservation laws.

The decision, which ordered the National Marine Fisheries service to redo an assessment that had previously permitted these fisheries, was welcomed by the Wild Fish Conservancy who brought the case forward, and by environmental groups in Canada. In a recent radio interview Raincoast Conservation Foundation’s Misty MacDuffee noted that Alaskan interceptions of Canadian salmon are “highly significant.”

It is estimated the decision could reduce impacts on chinook salmon in

72 - JULY 2023
COLUMN THE FISHING FIX

southeast Alaskan troll fisheries by 172,000 fish. Chinook salmon from northern and central BC, the west coast of Vancouver Island, interior Fraser River, Puget Sound, coastal Washington and Oregon and the Columbia River are impacted by Alaskan troll fisheries. Many of these stocks, particularly from the US, contribute to the year-long food needs of SRKWs who forage from mid-Vancouver Island to southern California.

Don’t pop the champagne cork yet. Alaska’s governor has already appealed the decision, consistent with Alaska’s history on the Salmon Commission as tough negotiators when the state’s fisheries are threatened.

This introduces another issue. Where does the Canada-US Pacific Salmon Commission fit into this

story? The commission is guided by its own principles, such as ‘balancing salmon interceptions between the two countries.’ In its simplest interpretation ‘balancing interceptions’ means Canadian salmon caught by Alaska fishermen are balanced by Canadian interceptions of US salmon originating from the Pacific Northwest.

Initially this looks like a US domestic fight, pitting Washington, Oregon and Idaho against Alaska over protecting SRKWs, and reducing Alaska’s interception of their salmon. However, important Canadian fisheries are located smack in the middle. These fisheries are already severely constrained for conservation and whale protection reasons. Watch how this plays out, because the stakes are high if this dust-up expands beyond US borders.

TOM'S TIP

July’s Fishing Tip

Fishing line is a relatively cheap angling necessity, but anglers should avoid the temptation to buy low priced products that could become the weak links in the fishing system.

Today’s lines are very taskspecific, unlike lines from decades ago. For example: Use abrasion-resistant non-stretch lines for rockfish, cod and halibut because they telegraph bottom contact and fish strikes far quicker than lines that stretch. On the other hand, use lines that are abrasion-resistant with some stretch capacity for salmon, because a bit of stretch cushions head shakes, hard runs and other salmon hookthrowing acrobatics that can jar the hook loose.

One, Two, Three Forty-Six-Footers

Do you like choices? Riviera delivers three new 46-foot models with a lot to offer

dows (clears). The flybridge climate can be controlled with heat/AC vents that face both the helm chairs and forward toward the lounge. On temperate days rolling up the clears lets the breeze in which really feels wonderful. The extra space of the flybridge and the ability to open up all sides differentiates the 46 Sports Motoryacht from the other two 46s.

WINTERIOR Both the 46 Sports Motoryacht and 465 SUV have similar layouts below, but in the SUV the helm is in the main saloon to starboard so twin helm seats and controls replace a second inside lounge on the flybridge model. Below

hen I found out that Riviera just came out with not one but three new 46-footers, I wondered why. After checking out these new boats I understand better and I think I can explain. Forty-six feet is a great size because a lot of utility and comfort can be offered, yet the boats are still easily managed by a couple. Convenient IPS joystick control further helps when shorthanded. Each new Riviera 46 has its own merits and enough differences to allow buyers to choose which model is the best for the way they boat. The Riviera 465 SUV and Riviera 46 Sports Motoryacht have the same hull and basic configuration. The Riviera 4600 Sport Yacht has a different hull, layout and styling. All three boats are around 50 feet overall (14 to 15 metres), are driven by Volvo Penta IPS pod drives, have three cabins and two heads and are packed with features and accommodations discerning yachtsmen expect.

ON DECK The 46 Sports Motoryacht has more living area and larger engines than the other two. This boat shares many features with the 465 SUV except for one major difference, a large open flybridge. Riviera is known for flybridge cruisers, and the 46 Sports Motoryacht respects that great history while taking it to another level with modern touches like an internal staircase and a lightweight, stylish hardtop complete with hatches for both ventilation and access. The flybridge is spacious at 4.67 x 2.82 metres delivering over 13 square-metres of living space. In addition to the two plush Pompanette adjustable helm seats there is a comfortable lounge ahead of the helm with a drop-down table, drink holders and stereo speakers. I like this set up because the helmsperson can eas-

ily communicate with people hanging in the sky lounge and if children are on board they are in your sight. With the helm all the way aft I had concerns about visibility forward but when standing or with the seats boosted slightly, I could see over the bow with enough distance to spot logs and debris. The flybridge lounge is a great congregating area for drinks and appetizers, or lunch on the go, and a wetbar and fridge at the top of the stairs add convenience.

The back cushion on the port lounge is perfectly angled to watch the scenery while underway or curl up with a book and relax. The lounge table lowers, and a filler cushion creates a bed ideal for stargazing or cuddling at night. The entire flybridge is covered by the hard top and surrounded by flexible clear win-

The other two cabins are under the main saloon with standing headroom at their entrances that lowers a bit at the beds. with twin bunks, or one or both can be a double cabin which gives you excellent versatility and no bunk beds. Alternatively, the 4600 Sport Yacht features a full beam master cabin under the saloon with an ensuite head in addition to a VIP cabin forward featuring a double island berth and ensuite head access. A third twin bunk cabin is an option on the 4600 Sport Yacht, or that area can be set up as a lower deck lounge. Either way you get two substantial double cabins and stacked bunk beds or the open lounge which can be used for sleeping when needed. The 4600 Sport Yacht features a full-size washer and separate dryer and the 46 Sports Motoryacht and 465 SUV have a single combo unit.

All three models have fully appointed galleys aft of the saloon that feature wide solid surface counter tops with a carved spill gutter, stainless steel sinks, fridges, freezers, dishwashers and ample storage. Our test boat interior had rich mattefinished walnut cabinets and panels. Cherry and oak are options as is gloss finish. The position of the galleys provides easy access to both the saloon

COCKPIT Each model has a semi-enclosed aft seating area with a table ideal for entertaining, al fresco dining or simply lounging. This mezzanine lounge under the hardtop can be enclosed with clears and climate controlled although the 4600 Sport Yacht lends itself more to being open as the aft lounge isn’t fully covered. On the 4600 Sport Yacht one side hosts a vented electric barbecue, wetbar, fridge and icemaker. The 46 Sports Motoryacht and 465 SUV feature a mezzanine lounge that is easily enclosed and connected to an open cockpit a few steps below. At 5.67 square-metres the cockpit has room to fish with rod holders and an optional lighted, windowed, recirculating bait tank. An electric barebecue, wet bar, fridge and ice maker add convenience for outdoor entertainment. Twin transom doors connect the swim platform. another to the port side-deck. A hydraulic lift capable of carrying a substantial RIB on the swim platform is available on all three models. Forward they all have centreline sun pads with bolstered backrests and drink holders.

ON TEST I was only able to drive one of these three boats, the Riviera 46 Sports Motoryacht, but observed the 4600 Sport Yacht as she ran with us. The 4600 Sport Yacht was fast and nimble as we manoeuvred the boats side by side and looked stylish with her deep V bow cleanly slicing through the short chop.

Aboard the 46 Sports Motorayacht optional Volvo Penta D11 IPS 950s pushed us smoothly and rapidly as we jockeyed up alongside the other boat. All controls were in easy reach of the helm including the throttles and joystick, twin Garmin MFDs, C-Zone, engine monitors, Muir windlass remote, stereo controls and a compass. With only six degrees maximum bowrise, I could see over the bow fine even from the aft position helm. After cruising alongside the 4600 Sport Yacht for some photos I peeled off leaning the 46 Sport Motoryacht gently into some tight turns. An optional Seakeeper

6 was running during testing which may have helped the Riviera feel solid and comfortable even when turning at speed. Our peak speed was 35.3 knots and a comfortable fast cruise of 28 knots uses 225.2 litres per hour delivering a calculated range of 280 miles based on 90 percent of fuel capacity. That speed at 2,250 RPM seems to deliver our best performance as other speeds never quite attained that efficiency. The boat feels solid at 22 knots and 2,000 RPM and fuel burn moderates to using 189.3 litres per hour but the calculated range drops slightly to 262 miles. In fact, once on plane from 16.7 knots at 1,750 RPM up to wide open throttle at 2,550 RPM and an average of 34.4 knots the fuel burn in litres per hour steadily increases, but the faster speeds make up for it and the calculated range remains right around 260 miles. Basically, there is no speed penalty at the top end so if the conditions warrant it, you can run faster, get there slightly sooner, using roughly the same amount of fuel as you would if you slowed down a little. The 260-mile range should be adequate for cruising in the islands and you can pick your speed.

CONCLUDING REMARKS The performance and versatility of all three of Riviera’s 46-footers means the choice is up to you. If an open flybridge and that extra room on top matters, the 46 Sports Motoryacht delivers. If you want to drive inside, the 465 SUV or the 4600 Sport Yacht offer lower bridge clearance and less canvas and clears to deal with. Other major differences other than styling are the mezzanine configuration, whether you need an open cockpit for fishing/entertaining and your cabin layout preference. If you are in the market for a boat this size, Riviera offers three great new choices.

BUYING OR SELLING?

Sellers and buyers both benefit from a BCYCA member’s experience. BCYBA brokers assist buyers to find suitable boats in the local market or further afield in the international market. Similarly, they present locally owned boats for sale to local and international buyers.

Take the stress out of purchasing or selling your boat. A BCYBA broker is your guide through a successful transaction. They help in these ways:

• Identify and evaluate yachts of interest.

• Provide experience in negotiating acceptable sale terms.

• Ensure your deposit stays in Canada.

• Outline vessel documentation, title, importation, insurance and taxation issues.

• Utilize strong working relationships with co-operating brokers, marine surveyors, marine mechanics, boatyards and other key industry contacts.

• Provide local follow up to help you in your boating adventures.

bear. This would give us a few seconds to inch our way (rapidly, in the dark, and without stubbing our toes on the sharp pointed cleats that menace the narrow decks amidships either side), leap simultaneously into the Zodiac, cut the line and push off. We’d start the engine on the first try for a change and race out to mid channel leaving one angry bear smashing two years’ worth of work in our computers and otherwise fouling and wrecking our beloved boat.

Because Mark has a calmer mind than I do, all I said to him was, “If you think you hear the grizzly swimming up let me know and we’ll hang over the side and fire bear spray up his nose. We’ll start the engine and cut the anchor rope and slip away.”

“I’ll let you know,” he said.

I tossed and turned in bed imagining being awakened by a snarling bear in our cabin ready to devour us, but I eventually dozed off. However, during the night I woke up in a panic whenever the boat started rocking really hard and listened for the grizzly.

Toward morning, I realized the rocking was from winds being blown up Princess Royal Reach creating waves that spin around the long curve of Patrick Point. It also dawned on me that grizzlies probably don’t make any noise when they swim.

After a very sleepless (and bear-less!) night, I awoke with one thought.

“A dog,” I said. “We need a dog.”

Was That a Grizzly?

TPoint, so we motored over to tie to a boom at Slate Creek so we weren’t there when he arrived.

forward cabin.

The Liza Jane is a 32-foot wooden boat. Deep hulled and slow moving; made even slower moving by being tethered to a 14-foot Zodiac with a 60-horsepower motor. One night during a week-long cruise, we anchored behind Patrick Point at the east end of Queen’s Reach in Jervis Inlet, with no other boats in sight.

We heard that a grizzly had been seen swimming the three miles across the inlet from Potato Creek to Patrick

Before bed I was so nervous I did something I’ve never done before—I locked down the boat. I got to thinking about the grizzly following its nose straight to the Liza Jane, trying to get at our garbage stuffed into a locker in the Zodiac, which probably reeked of valuable calories to a hungry bear. Would Mark and I be dessert?

I started thinking we should leave the forward hatch unlocked so we could escape if the bear came in the stern door off the cockpit. I imagined the grizzly swimming up to the boat, gripping the swim board with its huge arms, clambering aboard and ripping off the stern door. Consequently, I moved one of the bear sprays to the

I put the bear spray on the desk near our bunk where, I realized sadly, we’d probably have a maximum of 11 seconds to wake up, realize what was happening, orient to the dark, control our terror, remember where the spray was, leap out of bed, fumble for the spray, open the holster, mess around getting the plastic safety block off before carefully taking aim. I needed a better plan!

I went forward and latched the head door open to eliminate at least one problem. My plan was to leap from my bed onto the narrow counters that are on either side of the head, throw off the hatch cover, haul Mark up after me and then we’d fire the bear spray at the
