O

ne of the best parts of the boating lifestyle is the food. Whether you’re in a full-sized kitchen with all the amenities of home or you’re in a small boat galley with a simple propane cooker, food tastes better on the boat. If you’ve ever made the perfect breakfast while anchored in a peaceful cove you know exactly what I’m talking about. I can still remember some of the best meals I’ve eaten aboard. One of these was on a February cruise to Portland Island. We’d dropped the crab trap the day before and upon hauling it up we were rewarded with multiple dungeness keepers. We combined these with a small bucket of fresh clams gathered off the beach and a handful of nodding onions picked on the island, as well as a few staples we had aboard. The result was a delicious, hearty soup that filled the boat with much needed warmth and filled our bellies with much needed calories. Another favourite was on a summer cruise to Desolation Sound. I’d prepared the ribs at home before the trip began by seasoning them, wrapping them in tin foil and baking them on low heat for a few hours. When it was time to cook them on the boat, I

ACCOUNT MANAGER (VAN. ISLE) Kathy Moore 250-748-6416 kathy@pacificyachting.com

simply fired up the stern rail barbecue, took the ribs out of the tin foil, lathered them in barbecue sauce and grilled them until they were perfectly charred. We ate them in the cockpit with Caesar salad and roast potatoes as we enjoyed our beautiful, natural surroundings, the sun slowly setting in the western sky. As we move into 2024, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank long-time contributor Roxanne Dunn, who’s inspired many such meals over the years. Her monthly galley column has been a mainstay in Pacific Yachting for more than 10 years—longer than I’ve been with the magazine. Roxanne’s poignant and entertaining tales and, of course, her delicious and varied recipes will be missed, and we hope that you’ve enjoyed them as much as we have. Sadly, this month’s column will be her last. Next month we will be starting a new galley series in PY so stay tuned for that. We plan to continue inspiring those memorable boating meals. On a similar note, we’d love to hear some of your favourite onboard meals and how you prepare them. Send your favourite boating recipes to me at editor@pacificyachting.com for a chance to win a PY hat! Bon Appetit!

THE MORE YOU KNOW In your December 2023 issue there was story by Deane Hislop on Newcastle Island (Newcastle Island, page 22). Well, he did not mention Giovando Lookout at the top of Newcastle Island which has a cov-

hills on that trail which are steep from going to the top of Giovando Lookout at Nares Point and going down towards Midden Bay, where you can go onto the shoreline and see that side of Departure Bay, which I did when the tide is low. I don’t think Deane saw these places when he went to Newcastle Island because he did not mention them. I don’t own a boat, but I liked my time there and it was worth seeing. If you do or do not own a boat you can get the passenger ferry to Newcastle Island at Maffeo Sutton Park. —Robert Etchell

A REAL MENACE! I really enjoyed this month’s (December 2023) raccoon story on Wallace Island (The Vicious Menace of Wallace Island, page 114). Great place, Wallace, but watch out for the raccoons! My wife Donna and I enjoyed a night there some years ago. We were having dinner on the back of a friend’s boat, I suddenly realized I needed more butter for the corn on the cob we were having, so I rushed back to our boat only to find a raccoon searching my galley. I started yelling at him, grabbed a towel and chased him out, then went back to an enjoyable meal. We slept well that night until we heard a tremendous noise coming from our friend’s boat. They made the mistake of leaving the scrap corn husks in a plastic can on the back of their boat which the raccoons were fighting over and making one hell of a racket. Those raccoons are a real menace! Cheers! —Larry Bergholz

The Maritime Museum of British Columbia Opens Exhibit on Victoria Harbour’s History

T

he Empress Hotel was constructed on what were once the muddy shores of Victoria Harbour where the Lekwungen built and maintained clam gardens for food and trade. But that changed in 1843 when the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) ordered James Douglas to build a fort near the Harbour. The next 180 years have been chronicled by the Maritime Museum of BC in their latest exhibit, “Welcome to Victoria Harbour.” It’s a history of Indigenous exclusion, commercial development growing and waning, and re-

development on the same narrow strips of land around the harbour. The Fraser Glaciation scraped out the harbour between 15,000 and 29,000 years ago, but the harbour has changed over the years: through plentiful infill creating more land, the building of wharfs and breakwaters, launching businesses like mills, shipyards, breweries, tanners and soap makers, blowing up rocks obstructing marine traffic and with 30,000 seaplane flights, making it Canada’s largest water airport. The Colony of British Columbia was established in 1849, with HBC’s man-

agement. Canoes and steamers like the Beaver delivered HBC’s main trade items, furs, from all over BC. Victoria’s population surged to 30,000 during the 1850s gold rushes because Douglas forced every miner to register at the harbour-side Customs House before they traipsed off to the Fraser River and the Cariboo. Hotels and brothels quickly sprang up. Shipbuilding became a major industry, beginning with Laing’s Ways in 1859. They built stern-wheel steamers for the Fraser River Gold Rush and for the seal hunt in the Bering Sea. Today,

the Ralmax Group’s Point Hope Shipyard continues the shipbuilding and repair traditions. The harbour was home to the Consolidated Whaling Company which, starting in 1905, operated five Norwegian-built whaling ships. Catches of blue, fin, humpback, sei, and sperm whales were processed into oil and meal at four Vancouver Island whaling stations. About 25,000 whales were processed until the killing stopped in 1967. Seal hunting was also big business until, like the sea otters, overharvesting seriously depleted the stock. Controversies with Americans in Alaska finally stopped the hunt. Fisherman’s Wharf offered moorage to a large fishing fleet until fishing’s

decline. Today, some fishboats, float homes, shops and restaurants inhabit the wharf. Ogden Point opened Victoria up to deep-sea shipping. During the Second World War, Victoria Machinery Depot constructed five corvettes there and later built 11 ferries. The Coast Guard built a station in 1975 and thousands of cruise ships have docked at Ogden since 2001. While CPR ships once delivered international visitors, today ferries from

Washington arrive daily bringing tourists. The harbour is also home to several marinas offering moorage to local and visiting yachts. Harbour Ferries (water taxis) scurry across the water transporting locals and tourists alike. The Victoria Symphony attracts huge crowds for its annual Symphony Splash staged on a floating barge. The Victoria–Maui Race and Swiftsure both start in the harbour, while the Race to Alaska makes its first stop here. And the Maritime Museum’s annual Classic Boat Festival fills the docks in front of the Empress Hotel. The exhibit, which encompasses much more fascinating history, runs until April 6, 2024. —Marianne Scott

The Importance of VHF

W

hen it comes to boating safety, few tools are as essential as a VHF (Very High Frequency) radio. This compact communication device can make a significant difference in ensuring a smooth and secure boating experience. Here’s why having a VHF radio on board is crucial: • Reliable Communication: VHF radios provide reliable and instant communication with other boats, the coast guard and marine authorities. Unlike cell phones, VHF radios work even in remote areas, ensuring you can call for help or assistance in case of emergencies. • Distress Calls: In emergencies, time is of the essence. VHF radios are equipped with a dedicated distress button (Channel 16), allowing you to send out a distress signal quickly. This alert reaches all nearby vessels and authorities, increasing the chances of swift response and rescue. • Marine Weather Updates: Staying informed about changing weather conditions is vital for boaters’ safety. VHF radios can access weather updates and forecasts from designated channels, helping you make well-informed decisions about your route and activities. • Avoiding Channel Congestion: VHF radios have specific channels designated for various purposes, such

as distress calls, safety broadcasts, and general communication. This separation of communication ensures that important messages are not lost in the crowd, reducing channel congestion and improving overall communication efficiency. • Collision Avoidance: VHF radios play a crucial role in collision avoidance. Boaters can communicate their intentions, positions, and course changes, helping others navigate safely and smoothly in busy waterways. • Sharing Local Information: VHF radios enable boaters to share essential local information, such as navigational

hazards, best anchoring spots, or updates on marina facilities. This fosters a strong sense of community among boaters, promoting a safer and more enjoyable experience for all. • Required by Law: In many regions, carrying a VHF radio is a legal requirement for boaters. Compliance with these regulations not only avoids potential fines but also ensures that you are adequately prepared for any situation on the water. Before setting sail, familiarize yourself with your VHF radio’s operation and available channels. Ensure it is in good working condition and adequately charged. Additionally, take

the time to obtain the necessary licenses and certifications to use your VHF radio effectively. Many of our members offer courses to support you in learning and upgrading your VHF radio skills. In conclusion, a VHF radio is an indispensable tool that enhances safety and communication on the water. Whether it’s summoning help during emergencies, obtaining weather updates, or sharing crucial information, a VHF radio keeps boaters connected and well-prepared for any situation they may encounter. Prioritize safety and make the VHF radio an essential part of your boating adventures. —Courtesy Boating BC

WOODEN BOATS

Four Winds: A Legacy in the Making

CURRENTS

A

s so often happens, someone will contact Pacific Yachting with a story idea. That’s how musician, teacher and sailing enthusiast Andy Redhead alerted us to Four Winds, one of the oldest wooden vessels on the BC coast. Andy’s friend Bruce Bott owned Four Winds for 50 years. Bott, a mariner, boatwright, nautical researcher, artist, author and environmentalist, used the sailboat extensively to learn about whales in their natural habitat. In fact, Bott was one of the first mariners to discover orcas in Robson Bight and communicate with them using modern sonic equipment and an almost mystic approach to the whales. Bott and his ‘Project Apex’ crew are credited with being the first to create an interspecies ‘orcastra’ soundtrack coupled with film containing the first underwater footage of free orcas. The Film ‘Orca’ premiered at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre in 1973 and helped launch Green Peace’s ‘Save the Whales Campaign.’ Bott cherished Four Winds for 50 years and wants her to enjoy another 118 years upon the water, a future she so richly deserves. “The idea is to keep Four Winds going, for this boat to be in use. Bathed in salt water all these years, her hull does not leak at all. She only needs some cosmetic work, like painting the mast, which at my age, I can’t do,” Bott explains. “I want to see that this boat is secure while I am still around,” says the 76-year-old sailor. After learning her story, I have come to believe it will touch the heart of even the

20 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

crustiest mariner. It isn’t too far-fetched to consider Four Winds, the West Coast equivalent of the Grand Banks fishing and racing vessel launched on March 26, 1921 in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia: Bluenose, the sailing vessel featured on our dime. Wooden boats are more work to own but they are made of naturally organic and sustainable material. “There are acres of plastic boats on the coast and nature will have to digest every one of them,” says Bott. Bruce Bott is not of their ilk. He has seen it all before having sold his 80-foot Virginia Hope, a fully restored 1929 Mission Smack. (A smack is a traditional fishing boat used off the coast of Britain and the Atlantic coast in the 19th century.)

His other vintage boat, an 18-foot open ship’s boat built in 1875 was also fully restored. “I hear that they were both neglected and scuttled needlessly.” Bott asked Andy Redhead to help him save Four Winds from death and destruction. The two friends envision a non-profit association or society, the Friends of Four Winds. “She is my major asset; however, I would be open to selling her if someone would look after her.” Four Winds has an amazing legacy and deserves renewed life in a world adrift. She can continue to sail on the rolling sea and enjoy the wind in her sails and the sound of orcas frolicking beside her. Contact brucejordanbott@gmail.com for more information. —RM Davies

It inspired me to add to the usual doggerel by writing an ode to the Pacific Northwest: We love you in winter, In wind and in rain, But sure hope the sun Will soon shine again.

It will shine again, any day now. So, be prepared. When the forecast looks promising, how about braising some short ribs? If you make them the day before, you’ll have dinner ready to carry down the dock to the boat. As they rest in the refrigerator overnight, they’ll develop a rich, deep, beefy flavour guaranteed to satisfy your crew of hungry cruisers after a day on the water. Beef ribs come from steers. As a child, I lived on a farm, and according to my mom, they were bad-tempered beasts who would be happy to trample little kids or impale them on their horns and toss them around, or worse. adulthood, the critters were huge. They weighed about a ton and a half and regularly locked horns in fierce battles for dominance. So, my brothers and I believed. And although we did a lot of things that would have turned Mom’s hair gray had she known, we never climbed through the barbed-wire fence into the pasture containing the steers. We did gaze at them in awe and marvel at their magnificence. Their rib cage, starting at the shoulder, had to be four feet long, and each rib had to be at least a foot long. So, it always seemed odd to me that they could be labeled “short.” I finally realized that the butcher is to blame for that. Generally, the short ribs you find in the grocery store are from ribs one or two through five. Known as chuck shoulder ribs, they are cut English-style, which means the butcher sliced between the bones. Generally, they are chopped into pieces a little longer than my index finger. When properly braised, they become meltingly tender and succulent, with a complex umami flavour so amazing you’ll want to lick your plate. Flanken-style ribs, used for Korean-style ribs, come from the same ribs, but are cut across the bone. Ribs six through eight are referred to as plate short ribs. These ribs have a similar beefy taste. They are generally moist and have a higher fat content, which makes them great for barbecuing. The remaining ribs are called back ribs, and may be cut into small chunks and sold as riblets. Back ribs sit over the cuts we know as prime rib, rib roast, or ribeye steak, and as any butcher knows, it’s best to devote the meat to the more expensive cuts, so they leave little on the bones. What is left is between the ribs, and can be braised or barbecued in the same ways. Since Eve came from Adam’s rib, allegedly so he would keep her close to his side, braised short ribs make a perfect dinner on or near Valentine’s Day. Serve it over soft polenta, buttered egg noodles, or mashed potatoes. All you need is a green salad. Oh and don’t forget a baguette to wipe up the sauce. 24 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

Braised Short Ribs Notes: Plan approx. 450 gm (1 pound) per serving. Try to find ribs that have at least 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) of meat on the bone. Do brown before braising. It’s messy but so worth it. INGREDIENTS

Three to four servings: •1.75 kg (4 pounds) bone-in English-style short ribs •2 tablespoons olive oil •2 tablespoons unsalted butter •1 large onion, sliced lengthwise into crescents •2 carrots, diced •2 stalks of celery, sliced •3 tablespoons garlic, minced •4 ripe tomatoes, diced, or one 411-gram (14-ounce) can, drained •1 tablespoon mixed dried favourite herbs •1/2 teaspoon each salt and coarsely ground pepper •1 1/2 cups dry white (or red if preferred) wine •1 1/2 cups chicken broth •3–4 bay leaves METHOD:

1. Preheat oven to 160◦ C (325◦ F.) 2. Pat ribs dry; sprinkle with salt and pepper. 3. Heat olive oil to shimmering in large pan and brown ribs, taking care not to crowd them; place in ovenproof Dutch oven or lidded casserole dish. 4. Discard accumulated fat and deglaze the pan with a little wine, scraping up brown bits. Pour it over the ribs. 5. Melt butter and sauté onion, celery and carrots until slightly softened. Add the garlic, salt and pepper and herbs; stir one minute. Then add tomatoes and bay leaves; stir. Finally, add wine and broth and bring to boil; simmer one minute. 6. Pour over the ribs, taking care to almost but not completely cover them. (Add hot broth if necessary.) 7. Cover and transfer to the oven for two to three hours, until meat is tender. 8. Remove the meat and, if serving right away, tent with foil. 9. Strain vegetables out of the sauce, pressing them firmly to release all juices. 10. Defat the sauce. (Use fat separator or skim with a spoon) and shake two to three tablespoons flour with 1/3 cup cold water. 11. Bring sauce to simmer; whisk in flour; simmer three to five minutes, whisking often. 12. Correct seasonings; pour over the meat and serve.

Revisiting Our

f anchorages could talk, what stories would they tell? Tales perhaps of those who have come and gone—some putting down roots, others merely setting foot on shore for a few hours. The past isn’t always apparent, for nature quickly reclaims signs of human presence. But there will be traces. Some are prehistoric, such as a shell midden bordering the anchorage. Others are more recent. There could be some gnarled fruit trees still standing in an overgrown orchard or an abandoned wood cabin slowly succumbing to the elements. For long-time boaters like us, there is often nostalgia when revisiting favourite anchorages and the happy memories they evoke of days spent with energetic dogs and question-filled children and old friends with whom we shared a few laughs. There are many beautiful anchorages along our coast and the lucky ones are protected by park status. Marine parks are plentiful and this is especially true of the Gulf Islands, where a number

of provincial marine parks became part of a national park reserve in 2003. Lying in the lee of Vancouver Island, the sheltered Gulf Islands enjoy a mild climate in which a variety of plants flour-

ish, including arbutus and Garry oak. With a decent heater on board, boaters can cruise the Gulf Islands year-round. In our early days of boating, we spent many weekends crossing the Strait of

Georgia to spend a night or two anchored in an idyllic cove, often having the place to ourselves in the off-season. Mind you, when winter weather systems roll in from the North Pacific, the Gulf Islands receive their share of wind, rain and, occasionally, snow.

Lyall Harbour Princess Bay

One year, over the Christmas holidays, we sat out a blizzard in Montague Harbour. Initially we were on a mooring buoy, but an intensifying southeasterly and blowing snow prompted us to move to the empty dock and spend the night securely tied up while snow steadily fell. Our diesel stove kept the saloon warm and by morning the wind had shifted to a northeasterly with gusts of 35 knots being reported at East Point on Saturna Island. When the winds finally subsided and the sun made a brief appearance, we ventured ashore in knee-deep snow. The marine park had been transformed into a winter wonderland and we happily trudged in our rubber boots through the deserted campground. On that winter’s day, we had the place to ourselves. The beaches enjoyed by swimmers and sunbathers in summer were now dusted with snow. Montague Harbour was British Columbia’s first marine park when established in 1959. Today, it’s a favourite destination with just about everybody. There’s always room to anchor in this large harbour, which can easily handle dozens of vessels. If the marine park anchorage is too busy for our liking, we anchor at the opposite end of the harbour, where the marina and store are located. From here we have hiked along winding island roads to Bluffs Park overlooking Active Pass, for an eagle eye view of its western entrance. There are plenty of attractions at Montague Harbour—park trails, beaches, access to restaurants—but we tend to avoid this popular harbour at the height of summer and seek quieter anchorages in which to spend our weekends.

2. PREVOST ISLAND

This is what drew us to the pastoral peacefulness of Prevost Island. Much of the island is still privately owned by a farming family descended from Digby de Burgh, an Irish nobleman who bought the island in the 1920s for raising sheep, goats and cattle. Selby Cove became one of our regular hideaways when we spotted a nook along its northeast side. There we would anchor in two fathoms, set a stern line and be sheltered from all winds and any wake from ferries in Captain Passage. Then, one spring, a house was built overlooking “our” nook. So, we looked for another one farther into the cove and found a new spot to anchor in a bight along the same shore. Gently rising from its beach is a grassy slope bordered by spruce trees. As we mulled the inevitable changes coming to the Gulf

Islands, we wondered how much of Prevost Island’s waterfront would soon be dotted with houses and docks. We needn’t have worried. In the spring of 1996, the Pacific Marine Heritage Legacy acquired 100 acres of land at the northwest end of Prevost Island, including the entire Pelee Point peninsula. Private property became public parkland and sheep trails were now footpaths, allowing boaters to explore beyond the grassy knolls and arbutus-clad cliffs bordering the anchorages. From our nook in Selby Cove we could hike to James Bay, where most of the surrounding shoreline was now park property (eventually becoming part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve). The trail leads past a small orchard and an open-field camping area overlooking the broad gravel beach at the head of James Bay. If the apples in

the orchard are ripe, park visitors are welcome to pick a few. We have often sought shelter in James Bay, especially in winter when southeasterlies blow. If strong gusts from the south do make their way into the bay, the heavily treed shoreline serves as a buffer while the anchorage’s deep water and good holding ground will keep a well-set anchor from dragging. In summer, when the weather is settled and sunny, we enjoy visiting the islets lying off Prevost Island. Privately owned Owl Island consists of two islets joined by a shell beach at low water—a good spot to beach a dinghy and go for a quick swim. One time we didn’t notice the rising tide had lifted our dinghy and set it adrift and we stared in wild surmise as the current in Captain Passage began to carry it away. Finally, Bill, realizing an expensive asset was

heading out to sea, threw down his Pacific Yachting cap and swam out to retrieve the dinghy.

Hawkins Island.

3. HAWKINS ISLAND

On the other side of Prevost Island lies tiny Hawkins Island. This pristine islet is part of the national park reserve and access is restricted due to it being a habitat for several species of birds, including oystercatchers and migrating surf scoters. Back in the 1980s we would spend many a Saturday afternoon on this rocky islet when it was crown land and the only other visitors were the occasional river otter. After dropping anchor in the channel between Prevost Island and Hawkins Island, we would toss a picnic basket into the dinghy and row ashore to a pocket beach of crushed clamshells. There we would set up a sun canopy using a tarp and lines from the boat and sticks of driftwood we found lying on the foreshore. The view from our picnic blanket was of sailboats lazily making their way up and down Trincomali Channel in the summer breeze. We would leave Hawkins Island in late afternoon when the tide was rising and our little beach disappearing. Other islands beckoned. 4. PORTLAND ISLAND

Another of our perennial favourites is Portland Island, designated a marine park in 1967 and named in honour of Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth. Now part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, the island is one of the few marine parks where a boater can check out all of its anchorages on foot, for an extensive trail system encircles and crisscrosses the entire island. The most popular cove, Princess Bay, is at the island’s south end, behind the Tortoise Islets. A fair-weather anchorage open to south winds, it is popular in summer during settled conditions. A good lunch stop lies on the west side of 30 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

the island, in a bight south of Kanaka Bluff, where a lovely shell beach stretches along the shoreline. Portland Island’s other overnight anchorage, Royal Cove, lies at the north end of the island behind Chads Island (a privately owned islet). Our attention was first drawn to this cove when we noticed a lone sailboat anchored there, its bow pointed towards the ferry swells that roll in during the day. So, on our next visit to the island, we pulled into this cove for the night. It was a late-October weekend and no one else was there as we set the anchor and tied a line to shore. Our solitude was short lived, for we soon heard a man’s voice calling from shore. He asked if we had any drinking water we could spare. Ten minutes later he returned with a small group of backpack-laden boy scouts. Bill rowed ashore to collect their hodgepodge of containers, which we filled from our

water tank. ‘Be Prepared’ is the Scouts’ famous motto and the movement’s founder, a Victorian-era British army officer named Robert Baden-Powell, was once asked, “Prepared for what?” His response: “Why, for any old thing.” Many things can go wrong when anchoring in a small cove and boaters should be mindful of the drying shelf on both sides of the Royal Cove anchorage. One summer, while sharing this anchorage with a dozen other boats, we were stern-tied along the cove’s western shore near the entrance when our keel caught on a ledge as the morning tide ebbed. The depth sounder showed enough water under the bow, but our stern was resting on the smooth, flat rock protruding, about 30 feet from shore. There we sat, lifted once or twice by ferry swells but with no damage, until the tide turned to flood and carried us off.

A dinghy dock on the cove’s west side provides easy access to the island’s trail system. There are several undeveloped campsites on the island, including one at nearby Arbutus Point, but there is no potable water. Wild sheep used to roam the island and a visit in springtime was a chance to see newborn lambs. In 1989, to prevent damage to the island’s grassland and wildflowers, the sheep were rounded up and removed. However, the apple orchard planted long ago by Hawaiian settlers is still thriving. During the fur trade, when Hawaii was a principal stopover port for merchant ships carrying sea otter pelts across the Pacific to Asia, the Hudson’s Bay Company employed numerous Hawaiian men (called Kanaka) as crew on their ships. When the fur trade dwindled, they began settling in the Gulf Islands

and pursued their natural skills in fishing and farming. Long before the arrival of Hawaiian settlers on Portland Island, there were the Coast Salish, whose former village is gone, but the beautiful midden beach remains, stretching along the island’s west shore, opposite Brackman Island. An ideal place to land a dinghy or kayak, these brilliant white beaches of crushed shell—formed over time from shucked clams and lying several metres deep—were helpful navigational aids for canoe-paddling crew returning to shore after dark. 5. RUSSELL ISLAND

Russell Island, lying across Satellite Channel at the mouth of Fulford Harbour, is also part of the national park and it too was settled by Hawaiians.

William Haumea already owned property at Eleanor Point on Salt Spring Island when he purchased nearby Russell Island in 1886, clearing land to plant an orchard and strawberry field. Fifteen years later, Maria Mahoi inherited the small island and moved there with her second husband and brood of children. They added a large vegetable garden, kept chickens and dairy cows, and fished and collected clams. Their house still stands and descendants of Maria Mahoi are today volunteer park hosts, sharing their personal history with visitors. Boats anchor in the lee of the island, where a white shell beach overlooks the anchorage and a dinghy dock provides access to shore, where a loop trail leads to the Mahoi homestead and around the western end of

the island. The anchorage is sheltered from south winds and the holding ground is good. 6. SATURNA ISLAND

When summer slips into fall, we often head to Saturna Island. This large and sparsely populated island has always appealed to us, especially in the offseason. In fall, we would anchor in Lyall Harbour and row to the hamlet at the head, where a public tennis court beside the local school was always empty. Big maple leaves would lazily fall onto the court, adding to the mellow atmosphere as we played a casual game of tennis. Other times we would hike up the hillside, taking the road that winds through the village up to East Point Road, where a general store is situated at Narvaez Bay Road junction. One summer we walked for several miles along the quiet 32 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

winding roads leading up to Mount Warburton Pike. The views from atop the summit were spectacular. In our early days of boating, we once spent a Christmas Eve anchored in Winter Cove in the company of a dozen seals. It was a calm night, the only sound being the occasional splashing of a flipper near our boat. Since then, a dinghy dock has been installed in Winter Cove, next to the boat launch. From there, a trail loops through the woods and along the Strait of Georgia shoreline to Winter Point, where you can watch the tide rushing through Boat Passage. Wildflowers bloom there in spring. 7. KENDRICK ISLAND

An anchorage we began to regularly visit lies at the north end of Valdes Island. We had passed it many times when transiting Gabriola Passage but

never stopped to investigate. The anchorage lies between Kendrick Island and the east side of Valdes Island, at the entrance to Gabriola Passage. When crossing the Strait of Georgia from Sand Heads, we appreciated the fact there was no need to time our arrival to coincide with slack at a pass. There is a constant one-knot current flowing through the anchorage but it’s almost always in a northerly direction. The best place to anchor is north of the docks and buoys belonging to the West Vancouver Yacht Club, which owns Kendrick Island. South of here the water shoals quickly and the bottom is strewn with kelp. Although strong south and north winds will gust through the anchorage, the holding in thick mud and sand is excellent, making it safe for most summer conditions. The islets lying

southeast of Kendrick Island are part of Wakes Cove Marine Park and are perfect for swimming and sunning on the smooth sandstone. Water erosion has etched beautiful honeycomb patterns and wavelike shapes into the porous rock of these islets. On the Valdes shore, we have often landed a dinghy and hiked the park trail, which overlooks the anchorage before turning inland toward Wakes Cove. We have also accessed the park trails by motoring over to Wakes Cove in the dinghy (when current isn’t running in Gabriola Passage) and tying up at the park’s dinghy dock. Our family photo album contains plenty of pictures of the Kendrick Island anchorage. The stories it could tell include the happy times we have spent there.

elcome to our annual boat show issue’s New Boat Showcase! We’ve chosen a fresh approach to this feature for 2024. Instead of long-form writeups, we’ve instead included photos and statistics so that readers can more easily compare and contrast the boats within. In addition to the relevant stats, such as overall length, fuel capacity and displacement, we’ve included scannable QR codes that will take you to the local dealer’s website, where you'll find even more

information. In cases where there are multiple local dealers the QR code will take you to the boat manufacturer instead. The boats listed are, for the most part, new, and if not, are at least likely to be found at this year’s Vancouver International Boat Show or available locally. The powerboat listings begin below while sailboats can be found starting on page 60. Whether you’re in the market for a new boat or just browsing what’s available in 2024, we hope you enjoy browsing the New Boat Showcase.

BUYING OR SELLING? Sellers and buyers both benefit from a BCYCA member’s experience. BCYBA brokers assist buyers to find suitable boats in the local market or further afield in the international market. Similarly, they present locally owned boats for sale to local and international buyers. Take the stress out of purchasing or selling your boat. A BCYBA broker is your guide through a successful transaction. They help in these ways: • Identify and evaluate yachts of interest. • Provide experience in negotiating acceptable sale terms. • Ensure your deposit stays in Canada. • Outline vessel documentation, title, importation, insurance and taxation issues. • Utilize strong working relationships with co-operating brokers, marine surveyors, marine mechanics, boatyards and other key industry contacts. • Provide local follow up to help you in your boating adventures.

Marine Hoses Part 1: The types and their uses BY DENNISON BERWICK

Multiple factors need to be considered before choosing a hose.

F

From fuel to sanitation, drinking water to exhaust gases, hoses serve vital purposes on our boats and must be fit for purpose, installed correctly and inspected regularly. 68 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

Multiple factors need to be considered when selecting hoses for a vessel. “Cheap” hoses are likely cheaply made and will prove to be expensive if they fail suddenly or have to be replaced prematurely. Hoses do not last forever and, as a general guide, should be replaced at least every 10 years, if not before. Factors to consider include: • Suitability for the liquid—e.g. intended for drinking water or diesel. • Permeability—the ability to resist

gases, liquids and odours passing through the hose. • Vacuum rating—resistance to collapsing under negative pressure. • Flexibility—minimum bend radius without kinking. • Fire-rating—resistance to burning and bursting. • Types and sizes available—not all hoses are available everywhere. • Price—buying cheaper, inferior hoses is often false, even dangerous, economy.

ENGINE HOSES

Hoses on an engine are supplied by the engine manufacturer—for example, moulded hoses to supply coolant or oil to heat exchangers. Replacements usually have to be obtained from the OEM (original engine manufacturer), though in an emergency it may be possible to adapt moulded hoses from another manufacturer as a temporary fix. In addition to OEM hoses, diesel engines have five hoses which must be supplied by the boat owner. These include: The fuel fill hose from deck fill to the tank; the fuel supply hose from the tank to the primary filter and then to the engine lift (transfer) pump; the fuel return hose from the injectors back to the fuel tank; the vent hose from the tank to open atmosphere (venting outside and as high up as possible); and the exhaust hose (wet exhaust). There are different standards and requirements for each of these hoses. The simplest way to buy quality hose for the fuel circuit is to buy certified hose that meets one or more internationally recognized standards, such as ABYC H-33, ISO 7840 or SAE J30. General purpose radiator hose, PVC, polyester and clear plastic hoses should never be used for diesel fuel because the plasticizers, used to maintain their flexibility, melt in the presence of diesel oil making the hose stiff and liable to cracking and bursting with vibration. 70 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

Certified hose will be printed with marine hose and the standard every 30 centimetres (12 inches). The two critical standards for fuel hoses are fire rating and permeability. Fire-rated hose should be used for all hoses routed in or through the engine compartment and for any hose running close to open flames, e.g. a cooker or cabin heater. Fire-rated fuel hose has the letter A stamped along its length. Fire rated means the hose will not melt or rupture when exposed to open flames for 2.5 minutes (150 seconds). Hose stamped B is not fire-rated. Permeability is a measure of how much of a fluid or vapour can pass through a material unchanged (unlike being filtered). Just like odour-free hose

used for the toilet, fuel hoses need to have low permeability—gases, liquids and odours cannot pass through the hose material. A hose with low permeability has the number 1 stamped along its length: 1 to 15 = 15 grams can pass through 1 metre2 in 24 hours 1 = 100 grams can pass through 1 metre2 in 24 hours 2 = 300 grams can pass through 1 metre2 in 24 hours In addition to low permeability for fuel and sanitation hoses, engine exhaust gases must not be able to permeate

through exhaust hose! Conventional rubber wet exhaust hose, found in almost all wet exhaust installations, is made of layers of EPDM rubber and cloth wrapped together with a double spiral steel wire reinforcement. SAE J2006 R2 is the standard for wire-reinforced exhaust hose which can bend (a little) without kinking. Silicone hose (usually blue) is heat resistant (up to 176°C, 350°F), more flexible and lighter weight; it is also three times more expensive than conventional black rubber hose. Silicone hose can be useful to provide increased flexibility for a short distance (e.g. from the water injection on the exhaust riser to the water-lift muffler).

DRINKING WATER HOSES

Hoses for potable water—from the deck fill to the water tank(s) and from the tank to pumps, sinks or showers— should be non-tainting and non-toxic. Hose reinforced with either a stainless steel or synthetic string will resist collapse or kinking. Opaque hose will discourage the growth of algae.

Modern 11 AT THE SHOW!

BILGE, RAW WATER, SINK AND SHOWER HOSES

Any hoses fitting below the waterline (and heeled waterline) need to be of good quality with either steel or fibre reinforcement. This applies to not only bilge hoses, but to all hoses connecting to seacocks, raw water strainers, and cockpit drains. Failure of any hose at or below the water line is an obvious threat to the vessel and crew.

HANDS ON BOATER

SANITATION

Sub-standard hose used for the toilet, holding tank and pump-out will soon reveal why buying good quality material with low permeability is a good investment for the boat and happiness of the crew. The best is made of butyl rubber with a steel wire reinforcement; the hose is highly flexible and long-lasting against odours. Economy sanitation hose is made of vinyl with hard PVC reinforcement and it can be challenging to install in confined spaces.

PROPANE HOSE

In Canada, hose supplying gas inside a boat must be CSA approved and installed with a single run (no connectors) from the self-draining propane locker to the cookstove or heater. Type 3 hose stays flexible in cold weather and meets CAN/CGA 8.1 standards.

VENTILATION HOSE

Engine compartments with either passive or active air flow (using a blower) need large diameter hose (typically 75 centimetres, 100 centimetres or 125 centimetres) that is flexible and fireproof. Aluminum hose (such as for clothes dryers) is suitable, but avoid plastic dryer hose.

WHATEVER THE application, ensure the hose you are using in your next boat project is up to the task. In this case, it doesn’t pay to save. Having selected the most suitable type of hose for a specific project, the next stages are to: a) plan the route of the installation, b) select the right sized hose clamps, c) determine how the hose and hose clamps will be accessed easily for regular inspection and replacement and, d) schedule regular specific inspection of hoses and hose clamps. Selection, installation and inspection of hose clamps and hoses will be covered in part two.

rom its humble beginnings 40 years ago, C-Tow Marine Assistance Ltd. has grown into the largest private marine assistance company in Canada, with more than 10,000 members. In the summer, CTow receives about 700 service calls per month and since 1984, C-Tow has responded to over 50,000 requests for service across Canada. IN THE BEGINNING

It all started back in 1983, when the Canadian Coast Guard announced that they would no longer tow nondistressed vessels; they would respond

only to emergency, life-threatening situations. Non-emergencies would be dealt with by commercial operators. This opened a whole new world of opportunities for entrepreneurs. Jim MacDonald had worked as a bouncer at the popular Sandbar pub at the Island Hall Hotel (Now the Beach Club Resort) in Parksville. Among a group of regulars were Steve Ackles and his wife Sherri. According to Sherri, the local Coast Guard guys would come into the pub and have a few drinks. Jim got talking to them and they suggested there was money to be made offering marine assistance. Both were experi-

enced boaters and the two thought “Wow, this could work!” Their idea was to become the “Auto Club of the Sea,” offering annual memberships that would include towing broken down vessels, providing gas, assisting grounded vessels and helping lost mariners. Sherri Ackles remembers when Steve and Jim first started. They decided that Howe Sound to the Fraser River area would generate the most business, so the two initially based themselves out of Steve’s family’s cabin on Gambier Island. Their first towboat was an old fibreglass vessel of about 24 feet with a

cabin. Soon after though, they replaced that with an 18-foot Zodiac inflatable. The two developed brochures, started advertising and contacted companies about discounts for members. The way it worked in non-emergency situations was the distressed mariner would contact the Coast Guard and if the Coast Guard knew of a commercial operator in the area, they would pass on the information. Jim and Steve would then go out on the call and offer assistance as well as the opportunity to become C-Tow members. In other cases, they would respond directly to mariners, via radio. According to Sherri Ackles, Steve soon decided that their towing business wasn’t working out for him. Jim then carried on alone, though the two remained lifelong friends. In 1985, Norma Dallas and her hus-

band Dennis purchased the Bowen Island Marina. Norma recalls first meeting Jim shortly after. “He came over to our marina and I had space for his vessel. We had a spare bedroom in our house and he stayed here. It took a little bit to pull it all together, but soon he was selling more and more memberships. We had a CB radio in our kitchen, and eventually we had a VHF radio. Barb (MacDonald) was a Montessori teacher when she met Jim in 1988. The two were married in 1992. Living on Bowen, she often went out with Jim on calls. She recalls those early years: “There were a lot of boats out there and of course we had a radio in our house, and it was on non-stop on VHF 16 and 22, the Coast Guard channels and

the Vancouver Traffic channels. He had a scanner going all the time and it did kind of drive me crazy at first, but I slowly got used to it. He gave me a VHF so I could call him and keep track of him when he was out there by himself. It was kind of fun listening to what was going on out there and I still kind of miss it.” Bruce Falkins has operated the fuel dock at Fisherman’s Cove in West Vancouver since the early 1980s. “I remember when Jim first arrived sometime around 1984,” says Falkins. “He showed up on a miserable day and his Zodiac had no protection, not even a cabin. It was powered by a pair of 70-horsepower outboards and I remember thinking to myself, holy smokes, that’s hardcore. I was a member of Coast Guard Auxiliary and I asked him what he was doing. He said that marine towing was all

going commercial and he was starting a commercial towing outfit. I thought, that’s great, good for you. He was the first person I met who was doing that.” Norma Dallas recalls Jim’s dedication to the work. “He went out on that inflatable in the most god-awful weather you could ever, ever, imagine. That man took his life in his hands to go and rescue a vessel. It was unbelievable. He would get a Mayday and the Coast Guard would notify him there was a vessel, for example, that didn’t know where they were in the fog. Between the VHF radio and the CB (this was before GPS), Jim would triangulate or try to figure out where they were by listening to the signals of nearby lighthouses. Regardless of the call, he would take off in that Zodiac in miserable weather, in storms and the dark.”

Although now mostly retired, Maria Steernberg is a veteran marine photographer who has been working throughout BC coastal waters since she bought her first Sea Snaps vessel in 1985: “CTow became very popular very fast because they were always on the VHF, so people heard about them and also because they were so reliable and honest, unlike some of the competition. Sea Snaps was there to document a lot of it for the media. I loved working with them.” Jim hired contractors to work other sections of the coast while he continued to operate in the waters around Vancouver. In the 1990s, as business grew, Jim bought a 25-foot Bertram. It was painted yellow and white. Said Barb: “I went out on a lot of calls with him on the Bertram. It was a lot better because it was freezing cold in that RIB, open to the air. It was pretty rough out there sometimes and it scared the daylights out of me. Over the years, Jim saved several lives. It was quite an adventure.” In the early 1990s, membership had expanded to almost 200.

This edition provides details of the popular and useful anchorages throughout the Pacific Northwest. It includes easy references to the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve and covers the San Juan Islands, Desolation Sound, the Broughton Islands and places south to north along the way between these destinations, as well as the main waterways to Prince Rupert, and on to the southern tip of Alaska. Like its companion guide Docks and Destinations, it returns south via the West Coast of Vancouver Island, featuring Quatsino, Kyuquot, Esperanza, Nootka Sound, Clayoquot, Barkley Sound and more. Numerous maps and diagrams include descriptive icons showing the most recommended anchorages, coves and bays, so that at a glance it is possible to determine where to drop the hook overnight. The information is provided in a user-friendly format, taking the mariner from one anchorage to the next in a successive, geographic progression.

There was no love lost between the two. Bruce Falkins remembers, “In the early days you had to be quick off the mark because if you weren’t the first, then you had nothing.” Maria Steernberg also recalls the competition. “The fighting that used to go on out there was incredible. The call would come across the radio, vessel broken down or whatever the case was, a Mayday or PanPan. Jim’s contractors and the other fellow, would go flying to 86 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

wherever it was and try to be the first on scene and get a line on the vessel. In my estimation, Jim MacDonald and other C-Tow captains’ speed in reaching mariners in need was crucial to beating out early competition and establishing C-Tow as the top in its field.” JIM MACDONALD PASSES

Jim MacDonald passed in 2002 and Barb wasn’t interested in carrying on Jim’s business. Long-time friends, Harry Woodman (C-Tow Melwood), and his girlfriend, Joy Meldrum, ended up taking over management of the company. “Harry was a great, great guy,” said

a former C-Tow captain, “and he did a really good job.” However, Woodman wasn’t really interested in building the company and started looking for someone to take it over. In the end, Harry handed it over to marine surveyor Paul Dupre in late 2002. Dupre sold the company to Gibsons-based Wayne Skinner in 2005, and in 2008 Skinner sold the company to current owner Andy Cardiff. At the time there were about 500 C-Tow members in BC. ANDY CARDIFF BUYS C-TOW

Andy Cardiff grew up on the St. Lawrence and later moved to Sidney, on Vancouver Island. He had spent a lot Courtesy C-Tow

of time sailing and powerboating and he had been a water-taxi operator with Malaspina Water Taxi on the Sunshine Coast since 2004, and a C-Tow captain since 2006. Since assuming ownership, Andy has done the most of any owners to grow the business into Canada’s largest private marine assistance company. He explains, “I immediately let go a couple guys who I thought were questionable or had crappy boats and then gradually, I built it up again with more quality people and more quality boats. Another big move was to change the subscription packages and expand the service areas to the north, south and west of coastal BC. We now have an average of about 16 captains in BC.”

EXPANDING INTO EASTERN CANADA AND BEYOND

Since Andy was originally from Ontario, he saw an opportunity in expanding C-Tow back East. In 2010, he opened operations in Toronto and the Georgian Bay areas, then expanded across Ontario. More recently, he opened in portions of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. However, due to ice, those provinces are only serviced from May to October. There are now 20 C-Tow captains in Ontario and one each in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Andy has plans to expand into Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. There are currently 40 vessels operating in Canada. On the technical side, C-Tow has

developed an innovative app that automatically transmits a member’s longitude and latitude coordinates to C-Tow dispatch. Since its beginnings, C-Tow has offered discounts for products such as fuel, marine hardware, rental cars, hotels and various other services to members. Key tags have replaced membership cards. An online marine hardware store allows members to order any parts that C-Tow’s suppliers carry, which are discounted and shipped directly to their homes. C-Tow is also helping to support beach cleanups across Canada. So what’s next? In early 2024, CTow will expand its operations to the tropical Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Downwind Dance Subtleties, touchstones and techniques

A

Ahh, a subject dear to my heart. The dynamics of downwind sailing is about the melding of helming, trimming, crew weight, observation and communication. This article will be my take on finding the right mix of these separate, yet oh so connected elements that will lead to off wind success. I call it the downwind dance. 88 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

ONE OF THE EXPRESSIONS that I adopted early in my sailing career, and one that’s stayed with me to this day is “a boat is a boat.” This was the title of a monthly column in the early 1970s written by one-design yachtsman, Bob Smith. The premise of those articles stuck with me. Each month, Bob would sail in a different one-design class regatta, writing about each boat’s sailing characteristics, idiosyncrasies, good qualities and even some of the not so nice features. As a kid, my club had Fireballs, Signets, Mirror Dinghies and Sabots. It was fun to read about all those other boats, such as Y-Flyers, Lightnings, Snipes, Highlanders and

Thistles. The common thread that came through was as the title said, a boat is a boat. There were things that set each boat apart, but there were basic sailing principles and techniques that could be applied universally to achieve some level of success in each fleet. A good lesson I think, and it’s been one of my touchstones over the years when it comes to racing on many different boats. FAST FORWARD TO the present, so many advances in yacht design, sail development, refinements in hardware and high tech fibres for sheets, control lines and halyards. With all of those developments, I would suggest that many

of those universal sailing principles and techniques remain. What’s old is new again. Downwind sailing performance is arguably the area where the biggest gains in boat performance have been made. The marriage of design, technology and technique has lead to carbon fibre boats of all sizes now achieving downwind speeds in the high teens, 20s, 30s and even 40s. So impressive, marvels of the human imagination, but that’s the subject for another article. I’d like to talk here about displacement keelboats, the ones that most of us sail in our club and regional handicap racing. Let’s go! OK, I’LL BEGIN with a simple philosophy that’s served me well, a bit of a simplification I know, but indulge me. In my mind, there are three modes in downwind sailing with the spinnaker up: apparent wind sailing and projected area sailing are the two bookends, with a third mode in between, which I’d refer to as transitional sailing. Let’s begin with light air, under five knots, apparent wind sailing. The idea here is also simple, promote flow over the spinnaker and the mainsail. The goal to generate boat speed and create apparent wind that can be worked with. The subtleties and goals within each one of these modes begins and ends with the helming. The course chosen is linked to an astute attention and awareness of how the spinnaker is reacting and boat speed. The pole is low and all the way forward, wind angle is likely just forward of the beam, sail begins to fill, the leech opens, and the luff reacts with a curl. Hold that curl as the speed slowly builds. The crew weight is well forward and to leeward. Rule for pole height: lighter/lower, heavier/higher. I’m not big on rules of thumb, but this is a starting point. There is never a benefit to squaring the pole early. Like trying to start out in third gear. Too low on the pole and the luff will be too tight, not allowing the sail to lift. Too high, gravity, plus the weight of the cloth will not permit the sail to fill. Communication between the sheet

trimmer and the helm is critical here. The conversation might go something like this: “I’ve got a sail, pressure building feels good. Down two. Now hold. Pressure’s up. Down two more. Hold.” This must come from the trimmer, as they are holding the sheet and can feel the pressure, plus they will have the best view of the spinnaker. The mainsail trim is also important and although not as dynamic as the spinnaker trim, the main trimmer is a foil to the spinnaker trimmer’s prompts. The mainsail leech should have an open profile, but not forced beyond an even curve. A good helm will be taking input from the spinnaker trimmer, while also running through a loop of other inputs as well. One particularly important factor for finding and staying in the groove, is looking at the Windex, the telltales on the shrouds or the apparent wind angle on the instruments. Another is staying on top of the boat speed, either through a knot metre, or real time observation of relative speed compared to nearby boats. That speed Information can be coming from one of the crew just talking about what they see. One other critical input that often gets missed, is watching the spinnaker sheet. As soon as the sheet begins to sag, the helm must react before it drops in the water. “Coming up two.” So, there are the basics of the light air downwind apparent wind dance. Helming, trimming, crew weight, observation and communication all come together. NOW ONTO THAT slightly greyer area of downwind sailing that I’m referring to as the transitional sailing, perhaps the most difficult, because the goals and the answers are less well defined. To illustrate this, I’ll use the example of a fleet of diverse boats in size and type, downwind start in seven to 10 knots of wind. This could be Swiftsure, Southern Straits, Round the County, a leg of the Van Isle 360 or any Sunday distance race. Fifteen minutes after the start, the fleet has already spread out laterally, almost as far as it’s progressed.

90 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

A few boats squirt out ahead while others slip behind. What’s really going on here? Well, it’s a combination of factors, let’s have a look. Different boat designs will have different performance curves, that’s true, but even in one-design racing, this spreading out of the fleet occurs at the weather mark. First and foremost, I’d suggest that it’s about establishing some priorities, sailing fast, keeping your eyes open, and sticking to your guns. Always first downwind, is the partnership of clear air and pressure. When you have these two things, capitalize, make it count. Dynamic trim is a big part of this, the sheet and the guy to a lesser extent must be moving all the time. The helm must take every opportunity to soak a bit, when possible, but too low, too long is never good. Keep

Sailing slightly higher will stabilise the spinnaker and can lead to a higher average speed the pressure, avoid big helm movement. The crew is engaged and moving weight as required for proper balance. I relate this to dinghy sailing and sometimes remind everyone to imagine that they’re sailing a laser downwind, every change in pressure coincides with a subtle movement in, out or fore and aft. This is the real downwind dance. This middle ground sailing in variable conditions is an ever-changing elixir, a mix that includes pressure, boat speed, heading, positioning, observation and, as always, communication. Transitional sailing bridges the large space between apparent wind and projected area sailing, while occasionally touching the edges of both. Staying fast and focussed is the key in these medium changeable conditions, not unlike shifting gears upwind. Small gains are hard fought but can combine for a big gain at the end of a short or a long downwind leg.

LASTLY THERE’S PROJECTED area, or barn door sailing, it’s about exposing as much sail area and driving as low and deep as possible, while maintaining control. In some ways this is the easiest mode to understand and execute, yet the subtleties remain. Square the pole back, ease the mainsail out, firm up the leech, point her within 10 degrees of dead downwind or lower perhaps if the conditions are right—even slightly by the lee can be fast, if you’re brave enough. Depending on your boat, this mode is most effective in winds between 10 and 20 knots, perhaps a little above that depending on the sea state. A poweredup boat will find this low mode earlier in the wind range. If the wind is up and down and you’re caught on the edge of transitional mode, I’d suggest that sailing slightly higher will stabilise the spinnaker and lead to a higher average speed. The spinnaker will tell you when you’re on the edge of that balance. If the waves are up a bit, trying to sail full barn door generally doesn’t work that well either. The fluctuations in apparent wind angle will likely require a combination of course adjustment and big adjustments in trim. In flat water, the go low fleet will be sailing closer to the same course, and speed differences will likely be small. These medium conditions can be something of an equalizer, yet the pursuit of even the smallest of benefits can still pay dividends. Half a boat length, an overlap gained or broken, the priorities will remain the same: clear air, stay in the pressure, sail fast and we’ll add one more, economy of course and distance sailed. In other words, point at the mark! THAT’S MY BRIEF take on the downwind dance, a fun exploration with something new to learn, always! The potential for gains is there on every downwind leg, so stay focussed, keep your eyes open and oh yeah, one last thing, “big ease!” See you on a downwind leg sometime soon.

FISHING FIX Nanaimo area fin-clipped chinook salmon.

February Bits & Bites Tips for late winter salmon f ishing

L

Late January and February can provide some of the best salmon fishing of the year. However, chinooks are the only 92 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

salmon species that are really available for anglers to pursue. Juvenile coho, weighing just a few pounds, are present but are not targeted as they were decades ago in what were known as grilse fisheries. Both chinook and coho retention regulations vary regionally so check out these regulation discrepancies on the Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) website at dfo-mpo.gc.ca. Late winter is the last opportunity for

months when chinook salmon can be retained in many important fishing areas. Beginning April 1 and running to July 15, or longer, anglers must release all chinook salmon, which includes all wild and hatchery fish. Hatchery fish are easily identified because of their missing adipose fin. These are referred to as ‘fin-clipped’ or ‘marked’ salmon. is the abundance of US origin hatchery marked chinook. Southern BC anglers should thank Uncle Sam since US law requires all hatchery produced chinook and coho to be fin clipped, with some exceptions that affect a tiny proportion of the US hatchery production. Effectively 100 percent are marked. This mass marking has been recognized by US fish managers as a management and conservation tool because unmarked wild chinook must be released, while permitting modest mark selective fisheries (MSF) to proceed. Unfortunately, the program has only slowed the decline of US wild salmon, but not because it doesn’t work. US fisheries managers realize that the biggest threat to wild salmon, excluding climate warming, is the continued loss of freshwater salmon habitat. By comparison Canada only marks 10 to 15 percent of its hatchery chinook and coho. The remaining unmarked Canadian hatchery salmon masquerade as wild fish because anglers cannot identify them as hatchery origin. Consequently, they provide marginal benefits to fisheries, even though they have been paid for from public coffers and volunteer fundraising initiatives. So, take advantage of the opportunity to keep a chinook while it lasts. After April 1, even in areas with an abundance of US fin-clipped chinook present, every chinook must be released. For specific details on areas where chinook can be kept refer to the Fisheries and Oceans website noted at the end of the first paragraph.

Mature seven to nine-inch herring spawn in February and adult squid numbers are building so it doesn’t hurt to run bigger spoons, natural baits, full-sized hoochies and small plugs. Once the herring spawn is over the schools depart quickly and salmon revert to smaller forage species. 2

Lure colour is important If euphausiid shrimp or squid are present try lures with white and standard glow as the dominant colours. When bait fish are the primary forage choose glow variants, silver, chrome UV and chartreuse as base colours with pink, blue, red, purple or black as accent colours.

When fishing two rods keep at least one rod on the bottom Three rods is probably the maximum for deep trolling, unless you have a boat with a wide transom that permits running up to four rods. The third or fourth rods can act as fish-finders on slow days. Chinooks are usually near bottom, but there are times when putting gear in the mid-water depths can be very productive. Personally, I find running more than two rods in the winter problematic, unless the extra rod(s) are stacked on the riggers.

THE #1 FALL PROJECT

As we entered the cool confines of the tunnel, relief came and the attacks ceased. No more horseflies. We were hoping beyond hope that the little darlings inhabited only the south end of the tunnel. How wrong we were. As we chugged back into the daylight at the north end, the attacks renewed with increased vigour. We came to realize that their main base must be here. As we progressed, the number of attackers decreased a little and my wife decided to go below for a much deserved rest. I continued navigating and fending off the attacks as best I could. Now, Maggie May is a fine boat and served us well, but she did have a bit of a habit of biting you if you didn’t pay close attention to her while navigating. Take your eye off your course for a moment and the next thing you know, she’s changed course on her own and is headed for a canal bank. The horseflies had regrouped, and as I sat alone on the bridge they made their final attack, diving out of the sun. I was valiantly trying to fend them off when I heard branches scrapping along the boat. I looked forward to see that Maggie had taken a liking for several large willow trees that hung well over the canal. I made a quick course correction to bring us back to mid channel. A voice from below then called out: “What are you doing?” To which I replied: “Nothing dear, just avoiding some branches overhanging the canal.” With the attack over, I managed to get most of the debris of branches and leaves cleaned off the boat before the “Admiral” came back on deck and saw the mess I had made. Thank goodness there were no more notations for “horseflies” in the guidebooks. SEND US YOUR STORIES!

COCKPIT CONFESSION

Horsefly Alley BY CHRIS BOMFORD

M My wife and I were making our way upstream on the River Marne in northeast France, in our canal boat, Maggie May. There are two steering positions on the Maggie, one in the main cabin, which offers poor visibility for navigation, and one on the upper deck, which although somewhat exposed, I used all the time because it had great visibility. 138 - F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 4

We had turned off the River Marne and headed north on the Canal de l’Aisne à la Marne toward the city of Reims. The canal rose through several locks to a summit, then through a 2.4-kilometre tunnel passing under a hill and then dropping down through more locks to the village of Sillery, where we planned to stay overnight. Maggie May came equipped with guidebooks containing route maps for various canals. What made them extremely valuable to us was that the previous owners had notated them with various points and items of interest that they had passed through. What sparked our curiosity was that the guidebook for this area had the notation “horseflies” written on the map.

An ominous warning, but little did we know… Although we navigated the first few locks in peace and tranquility, that soon changed. As we gained altitude, the first horseflies began to take an interest in us and started to circle. My wife had a bike accident a few weeks earlier and was recuperating from a broken collar bone, however she did her best to smack the little blighters away from me so I could concentrate on navigation. The number of horseflies began to increase dramatically, and as we neared the summit there were hundreds circling around vying for a bite—we were starting to be driven somewhat mad by the attacks.
