For the present catalogue no. 20 we collected 20 solitaires. “The best one” or most rare weight cannot be identified, because all twenty are real solitaires and one-time offers. Two Hintha bird weights with 2.5 viss (250 tical), both came from German collections, acquired in Burma in the 1970’s, as well as a few pre-1600 bird and beast weights are extremely rare. Two bronze Nandi bull figurines (10 tical each) belongs to the most sought after weights. A 50 tical bird weight from Mon state (early 20 th century), a tall reddish-brown copper-bronze elephant with 66 g as well as one of the smallest elephant weigths (6,6 g) we’ve ever found (with flower mark) came together with a few other treasures to make catalogue no 20 that something special to call it “Solitaire”. In addition to this, we offer 30 standard weights of various standard forms with 20, 10 and 5 tical weight mass to complete your sets. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rare Pumpkin bird weight with bird sign front and back at an octagonal solid bronze base and with the Lan Na inscription left and right. Signs of rubbing/grinding at the protruding vertical edges of the base and at the tip of the nose as well as a chip at the tip of the tail do only slightly reduce the charm of this old pumpkin weight. Hintha 1B (Gears group 5, period K), 2.5 viss / 250 tical, Burma, circa 1640

It’s an extremely rare big Hintha 1B weight or so-called “K-bird” with a weight mass of 2.5 viss or 250 tical. The Hintha bird stands on an octagonal base. The body shows reduced decoration with a chain of dots on tail and wings, framed between lines. With only minor wear and tear the weight is still in very good condition overall. weight mass: height:

This almost 300 years old “sleeping duck” from Mon State (Burma) is a hard find these days, especially with such an attractive, nearly black patina and in excellent condition as presented here. The 6-rayed star mark is clear visible and deeply embossed. The extremities are only slightly worn, even the eyes with two eyebrow lines on each side can still be found in very good condition. weight mass: height:

These Hintha 3A1 bird weights have a remarkable form and can be clearly distinguished from later H3 bird weights. While 1 or Â˝ viss weights of Hintha 3B form are rather common, bird weights of H3A1 standard form are not easy to get anymore. Therefore this beautiful specimen is a clear recommendation for the collector who still miss it in his set, even this weight is well worn with a small damage on the head knob. The precise 6-rayed star mark front right is clear visible. A remarkable supplementary 20 tical H3A1 weight has been added here as no. 29 (left). weight mass:

Although 1 viss weights and smaller pieces of H3B standard form can still be found frequently, a 2.5 viss weight is a real SOLITAIRE. When we acquired this masterpiece, the name for our catalogue 20 was born. It’s the perfect Hintha 3 B standard form, but “really big”. All signs of use. Great patina. Only very few pieces of this weight form appear on the market from time to time, sometimes as 20 tical weights, mostly smaller. Here we offer a rare 50 tical weight with the typical inclined forward posture of Mon Bird weights in rare good condition. The big eyelid is a remarkable nice detail. Beautiful dark patina. Our lion weight, standing on an oblong base with rounded edges, has a smooth surface with beautiful greenish-brown patina. Decoration lines can only be found on the hidden parts of the weight. With the “twin rod” and the horse tail, it’s a rare piece from early Ava period. Good condition considering its age.

Toe 1A, 5 tical, Burma, pre-1600

This very interesting T1A has a square base with rounded edges, rod mouth appendage and lotus tail. Body and base are covered with rich traces of black lacquer. But most important and remarkable is the inscription at the bottom of the base. According to Saro Jini (Thanks for translation!) the meaning of the sign is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ara hanâ&#x20AC;?. Shin Arahan (c. 1034 - 1115) was a monk from Thaton kingdom and an advisor of king Anawratha in early Bagan era. In this respect, it could be an important piece and should be a subject of further examination.

Our magnificent T1B lion weight has a smooth surface from use over centuries with a dark multi-colour patina. The rare special base shape could be found until now only on a very few smaller lion weights, here we offer for the first time a 1 viss weight. There are three verification marks: 1st the square depression in front of the base, 2nd the circular sign front right and 3rd the 6-rayed star right on the base. This well worn Chinthe weight stands on a square, beautiful elaborated base with a precise 9rayed star mark. The copper inlay on the back of the right side is already lost. Left side on the back a large inlay seems to be remained, but not clear to identify under the rich shining patina. Chinthe 2A, 20 tical, Burma, circa 1760

Unusual for a 20 tical C2A this lion weight shows not only one single long and narrow copper inlay on the back of the left side, but the two deep dotted decoration lines on the base, completed with a horizontal line below. Also the hairs on the four legs represented by dots. The weight is strongly worn, especially the horn right and the eye left. Otherwise the rare decoration and the silver bronze with beautiful patina makes our Chinthe very attractive as an add-on for a collection. The 9-rayed star mark is barely visible. weight mass:

Nandi bull, 10 tical, Burma, 1st half 18th century or earlier

The weight mass of 146 g corresponds to the old standard of 15 g/tical, which was common until c. 1700. The bull is fine and detailed elaborated with perfect proportions and a necklace of small bells with one bigger centre piece. The proportions of the animal are perfect. Probably the figurine was used as a lucky charm, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only slightly worn with a smooth, silvery patina. Otherwise the massive readjustment with lead suggests the use as a weight. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a masterpiece for every collection of Burmese weights and charms. weight mass: height:

Nandi bull, 10 tical, Burma, 1st half 18th century or earlier

Also here the weight mass of 147 g corresponds to the old standard of 15 g/tical. This suggests that this Nandi bull was made c. 1700 or earlier. The necklace is designed as a braided leather strap. The weight is slightly worn, especially at the horns, ears and both sides of the body, leaving a smooth attractive bronze patina. Since the base is only a thin plate, the animal is slightly bigger than the bull in no. 17. A rare collectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gem. weight mass: height:

All three Karaweik weights of this set show three rows of neck feathers, an octagonal base as well as the outline of a bird as verification mark. The smooth rich patina makes these two Hintha bird weights to lovely collectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weights. Both are strongly worn with a lot of character. All four Toe weights bear a necklace of beads. While the 5 tical weights have a double row of beads, the 20 tical weights show only a single row with additional line decoration. The 9-rayed star mark of both 20 tical weights is well visible, but almost vanished at the 5 tical weights. The base decoration differs between the lion pairs left and right. Left the bases are decorated by 4 or 5 vertical lines, right the bases are stepped, additional line decoration is barely visible. Toe 2 (Toe Oung), set of 20/10 tical, Burma, circa 1680

These two 300 plus years old Toe weights show all signs of use over the centuries. The front of the octagonal base bear the square depression. Body and base of the 20 tical weight show traces of black coating. The open mouth is equipped with an upper row of detailed teeth. On the base of the 20 tical weight a rare additional 4-rayed star mark is barely visible. Although the tip of the tail is broken off, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very collectible T2 standard weight. The 10 tical weight shows partly slightly red coloured surface, probably from previous coating or discolouration of the copper alloy. Although both weights showing a few wear and tear, all details are well visible, so that the weights are in very good condition overall. weight mass: price:

Chinthe 1, set of 20/10/5 tical, Burma, circa 1730

Chinthe 1 weights with octagonal base and 4-rayed star mark are finely elaborated. Remarkable details are the knobbed beard joining the chest with a beautiful trefoil (Sylvia Fraser-Lu described it in an almost poetic style â&#x20AC;&#x153;with a sprig of foliage suspended from the mouthâ&#x20AC;?) as well as the downward curved mane (in contrast to C2B). The lion weights with copper inlays are always magical pieces. The 20 tical lion bears 4 large shining, almost square reddish brown copper inlays as well as traces of red lacquer. The 4 inlays of the 10 tical weight are slightly smaller. The real treasure is our 5 tical weight (in addition readjusted with lead) with seven copper inlays, even the eyes are shining. The much scarcer handle with two knobs, the upwards curved mane and the tall base make the 20 tical. The 10 tical weight is readjusted by an old rusty iron bolt and nut to almost perfect 160 g. The upper side of the handle shows a beautiful line decoration, the back of the base bears a small dot (here without the circle) as a makerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mark. But the almost perfect beauty is our 4 tical (!) weight, detailed and in remarkable good condition with rich shining patina and a precise 9-rayed star.

The highly stylised 10 tical weight left bears the bird mark front right and detailed feather and line decoration. Our 20 tical (centre), with a slightly opened mouth, is partly covered with a thick layer of black coating. Its extremities are smoothly worn, leaving the bright brass, same as with H4D right, but here with rich brown patina. Three tall eye-catching head knobs and the upwards curled tail feathers are distinctive features of H4D standard form from Shan States in Burma.

Geltungsbereich & Abwehrklausel (1) Für die über die Galerie Michael Herrfurth Asiatische Kunst (Online-Galerie unter www.opiumgewichte.com) begründeten Rechtsbeziehungen zwischen dem Betreiber (nachfolgend „Anbieter“) und seinen Kunden gelten ausschließlich die folgenden Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen in der jeweiligen Fassung zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung. (2) Abweichende Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen des Kunden werden zurückgewiesen. §2 Zustandekommen des Vertrages (1) Die Präsentation der Waren in der OnlineGalerie stellt kein bindendes Angebot des Anbieters auf Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages dar. Der Kunde wird hierdurch lediglich aufgefordert, durch eine Bestellung ein Angebot abzugeben. (2) Durch das Absenden der Bestellung per Email gibt der Kunde ein verbindliches Angebot gerichtet auf den Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages über die durch ihn in der Email genannten Waren ab. Die in der Internetpräsentation bzw. im pdfKatalog im Übrigen enthaltenen Angaben, insbesondere Preise, enthalten kein verbindliches Angebot und sind freibleibend. Irrtümer auf voran geschalteten Website oder abweichende Preisangaben auf Websites Dritter haben keine Verbindlichkeit im Verhältnis der Vertragsparteien. Bei Lieferungen in Länder außerhalb der Europäischen Union können zusätzliche Kosten für anfallende weitere Steuern und Zölle entstehen, auf die der Anbieter keinen Einfluss hat. Diese Kosten werden in vollem Umfang vom Kunden getragen. Zahlung Der Kunde wählt bei Abgabe seiner Bestellung unter mehreren durch den Anbieter vorgegebenen Zahlungsweisen die gewünschte aus. Zahlungen gelten ungeachtet der gewählten Zahlungsweise erst dann als geleistet, wenn der Anbieter uneingeschränkt über den Betrag verfügen kann. Der Kaufpreis ist sofort ohne Abzug fällig. Der Kunde ist vorleistungspflichtig. Der Kunde kommt ohne weitere Erklärung seitens des Anbieters 14 Tage nach Lieferung der Ware in Verzug, soweit er nicht bezahlt hat. Die Verzugsfolgen richten sich nach den gesetzlichen Bestimmungen. Vorbehalt bei Nichtverfügbarkeit Der Anbieter sichert nicht zu, dass die Website bzw. der pdf-Katalog stets aktuell und die dargestellte Ware noch verfügbar ist. Eigentumsvorbehalt Die gelieferte Ware verbleibt bis zur vollständigen Bezahlung im Eigentum des Anbieters. Fälligkeit Die Zahlung des Kaufpreises ist mit Vertragsschluss fällig. Gewährleistung Die Gewährleistungsrechte des Kunden richten sich nach den allgemeinen gesetzlichen Vorschriften, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Für Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter gilt die Regelung in § 6 dieser AGB. Unternehmern beträgt die Verjährungsfrist bei neu hergestellten Sachen und bei gebrauchten Sachen 1 Jahr. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit sowie für Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. Wesentliche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt ebenfalls nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen. Gegenüber Unternehmern ebenfalls ausgenommen von der Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen ist der Rückgriffsanspruch nach § 478 BGB. Eine Garantie wird von dem Anbieter nicht erklärt. Haftungsausschluss Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden sind ausgeschlossen, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Der vorstehende Haftungsausschluss gilt auch zugunsten der gesetzlichen Vertreter und Erfüllungsgehilfen des Anbieters, sofern der Kunde Ansprüche gegen diese geltend macht. Von dem unter Ziffer 1 bestimmten Haftungsausschluss ausgenommen sind Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit und Schadensersatzansprüche aus der Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. Wesentliche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen. Von dem Haftungsausschluss ebenfalls ausgenommen ist die Haftung für Schäden, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen. Vorschriften des Produkthaftungsgesetzes (ProdHaftG) bleiben unberührt. Abtretungs- und Verpfändungsverbot Die Abtretung oder Verpfändung von dem Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter zustehenden Ansprüchen oder Rechten ist ohne Zustimmung des Anbieters ausgeschlossen, sofern der Kunde nicht ein berechtigtes Interesse an der Abtretung oder Verpfändung nachweist. Aufrechnung Ein Aufrechnungsrecht des Kunden besteht nur, wenn seine zur Aufrechnung gestellte

Forderung rechtskräftig festgestellt wurde oder unbestritten ist. § 13 Rechtswahl & Gerichtsstand (1) Auf die vertraglichen Beziehungen zwischen dem Anbieter und dem Kunden findet das Recht der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Anwendung. Von dieser Rechtswahl ausgenommen sind die zwingenden Verbraucherschutzvorschriften des Landes, in dem der Kunde seinen gewöhnlichen Aufenthalt hat. Die Anwendung des UN-Kaufrechts ist ausgeschlossen. (2) Gerichtsstand für alle Streitigkeiten aus dem Vertragsverhältnis zwischen dem Kunden und dem Anbieter ist der Sitz des Anbieters, sofern es sich bei dem Kunden um einen Kaufmann, eine juristische Person des öffentlichen Rechts oder ein öffentlich-rechtliches Sondervermögen handelt. § 14 Salvatorische Klausel Sollte eine Bestimmung dieser Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen unwirksam sein, wird davon die Wirksamkeit der übrigen Bestimmungen nicht berührt.
