Christmas Special 2013 The present catalogue, our „Christmas Special“, shows again a wide variety of treasures of Asian art and possibly the best selection ever.

The front cover displays a stunning gilded ½ viss (758 g) Chinte 2B weight from the 18th century, probably a calibration weight used by the officials to verify „private“ weights.

For every subject of Burmese art we offer second hand or out-of-print books in our Burmese library.

After the last two catalogues „Twenty Tical“ and „The Kids II“ we were actually intending in clear and consistence way to focus onto the „Dimes and Nickels“ (following the UScoins the ten and five tical weights). But during the „making off“ of the catalogue we were so lucky to acquire some - in this quality more than rare - opium weights from a Mandalay collection. So now we are able to offer more 20 tical as well as some 50 tical and 1 viss weights than originally expected.

But - as usual - the „Christmas Special“ is not only an offer to the enthusiasts of the Burmese weights. Between the weights a few rare beauties of Asian art are scattered.

Again we are not follow a chronological order.

But every piece of art is well described, also with the estimated age.

Regarding the Burmese weights you will find some excellent examples of the standardforms from the early days up to the 20th century.

Apart from the weights we are pleased to be able to present you two amazing bronze rain drums from different age and sites.

We also offer two beautiful lacquered and gilded Zedis from the Shan-states (19th century or earlier) with the Burmese zodiac.

The two silver Kammavaca/Kammawa-sa are very rare compared with the gilded one. We offer a complete set from Kachin-state in perfect condition. Another one, probably Shan, with four lines of script, is a simply beautiful 17th or early 18th century rare artefact of Asian art. The highlight of our Kammavaca collection is a rare very large gilded and with 16 folios complete Mandalay manuscript with an inscription at the cover.

Beside of that we offer some strands of multicolour Indo-pacific tradewind beads in different sizes. Rare over 1.000 years old examples of beads from the Pyu-millennium (Bur-

Geltungsbereich & Abwehrklausel (1) Für die über die Galerie Michael Herrfurth Asiatische Kunst (Online-Galerie unter www.opiumgewichte.com) begründeten Rechtsbeziehungen zwischen dem Betreiber (nachfolgend „Anbieter“) und seinen Kunden gelten ausschließlich die folgenden Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen in der jeweiligen Fassung zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung.

(2) Abweichende Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen des Kunden werden zurückgewiesen. §2 Zustandekommen des Vertrages (1) Die Präsentation der Waren in der OnlineGalerie stellt kein bindendes Angebot des Anbieters auf Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages dar. Der Kunde wird hierdurch lediglich aufgefordert, durch eine Bestellung ein Angebot abzugeben.

(2) Durch das Absenden der Bestellung per Email gibt der Kunde ein verbindliches Angebot gerichtet auf den Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages über die durch ihn in der Email genannten Waren ab. Mit dem Absenden der Bestellung erkennt der Kunde auch diese Geschäftsbedingungen als für das Rechtsverhältnis mit dem Anbieter allein maßgeblich an.

(3) Der Anbieter bestätigt den Eingang der Bestellung des Kunden durch Versendung einer Bestätigungs-E-Mail. Diese Bestellbestätigung stellt noch nicht die Annahme des Vertragsangebotes durch den Anbieter dar.

Sie dient lediglich der Information des Kunden, dass die Bestellung beim Anbieter eingegangen ist. Die Erklärung der Annahme des Vertragsangebotes erfolgt durch die Auslieferung der Ware oder eine ausdrückliche Annahmeerklärung. §3 Leistungsbeschreibung (1) Die Beschaffenheiten der angebotenen Gegenstände werden im Einzelnen durch die Beschreibung auf der Website bzw. in einem per Download oder Email zur Verfügung gestellten Katalog im pdf-Format links oder rechts neben, unter oder über der Abbildung verbindlich und abschließend dargestellt. Sonstige öffentliche Äußerungen des Anbieters, dessen Gehilfen oder Dritter enthalten keine ergänzende oder ändernde Leistungsbeschreibung.

(2) Den Parteien ist bewusst, dass es bei der Übertragung und Anzeige der Bilddateien möglicherweise zu Abweichungen zwischen dem Original und der Darstellung auf dem Monitor z.B. hinsichtlich der Farbtöne kommen kann. Eine farbgetreue Wiedergabe der zugrunde liegenden Originale ist nicht geschuldet. Geringfügige Abweichungen zwischen der Darstellung des Bildes auf den Monitor und dem Original sind vertragsge-

mäß. Vertraglich geschuldet wird jedoch die in der Produktbeschreibung enthaltenen Eigenschaften (z.B. Material, Alter, Herkunft) auf der Website bzw. im Katalog zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung.

Preise Alle Preise verstehen sich in Euro.

Maßgeblich sind ausschließlich die auf Anfrage dem Kunden per Email mitgeteilten Preise. Die in der Internetpräsentation bzw. im pdf-Katalog im Übrigen enthaltenen Angaben, insbesondere Preise, enthalten kein verbindliches Angebot und sind freibleibend.

Irrtümer auf voran geschalteten Website oder abweichende Preisangaben auf Websites Dritter haben keine Verbindlichkeit im Verhältnis der Vertragsparteien.

Alle angegebenen Preise verstehen sich in Euro einschließlich der jeweils geltenden gesetzlichen Mehrwertsteuer. Diese wird in der Rechnung separat ausgewiesen.

Bei Lieferungen in Länder außerhalb der Europäischen Union können zusätzliche Kosten für anfallende weitere Steuern und Zölle entstehen, auf die der Anbieter keinen Einfluss hat. Diese Kosten werden in vollem Umfang vom Kunden getragen.

Zahlung Der Kunde wählt bei Abgabe seiner Bestellung unter mehreren durch den Anbieter vorgegebenen Zahlungsweisen die gewünschte aus. Zahlungen gelten ungeachtet der gewählten Zahlungsweise erst dann als geleistet, wenn der Anbieter uneingeschränkt über den Betrag verfügen kann.

Der Kaufpreis ist sofort ohne Abzug fällig.

Der Kunde ist vorleistungspflichtig.

Der Kunde kommt ohne weitere Erklärung seitens des Anbieters 14 Tage nach Lieferung der Ware in Verzug, soweit er nicht bezahlt hat. Die Verzugsfolgen richten sich nach den gesetzlichen Bestimmungen.

Vorbehalt bei Nichtverfügbarkeit Der Anbieter sichert nicht zu, dass die Website bzw. der pdf-Katalog stets aktuell und die dargestellte Ware noch verfügbar ist.

Eigentumsvorbehalt Die gelieferte Ware verbleibt bis zur vollständigen Bezahlung im Eigentum des Anbieters.

Fälligkeit Die Zahlung des Kaufpreises ist mit Vertragsschluss fällig.

Gewährleistung (1) Die Gewährleistungsrechte des Kunden richten sich nach den allgemeinen gesetzlichen Vorschriften, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Für Schadens-

ersatzansprüche des Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter gilt die Regelung in § 6 dieser AGB. Die Verjährungsfrist für Gewährleistungsansprüche des Kunden beträgt bei Verbrauchern bei neu hergestellten Sachen 2 Jahre, bei gebrauchten Sachen 1 Jahr. Gegenüber Unternehmern beträgt die Verjährungsfrist bei neu hergestellten Sachen und bei gebrauchten Sachen 1 Jahr. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit sowie für Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. Wesentliche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt ebenfalls nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen. Gegenüber Unternehmern ebenfalls ausgenommen von der Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen ist der Rückgriffsanspruch nach § 478 BGB. Eine Garantie wird von dem Anbieter nicht erklärt.

Haftungsausschluss Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden sind ausgeschlossen, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Der vorstehende Haftungsausschluss gilt auch zugunsten der gesetzlichen Vertreter und Erfüllungsgehilfen des Anbieters, sofern der Kunde Ansprüche gegen diese geltend macht.

Von dem unter Ziffer 1 bestimmten Haftungsausschluss ausgenommen sind Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit und Schadensersatzansprüche aus der Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. Wesentliche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen.

Von dem Haftungsausschluss ebenfalls ausgenommen ist die Haftung für Schäden, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen.

Vorschriften des Produkthaftungsgesetzes (ProdHaftG) bleiben unberührt.

Abtretungs- und Verpfändungsverbot Die Abtretung oder Verpfändung von dem Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter zustehenden Ansprüchen oder Rechten ist ohne Zu-

stimmung des Anbieters ausgeschlossen, sofern der Kunde nicht ein berechtigtes Interesse an der Abtretung oder Verpfändung nachweist. § 12 Aufrechnung Ein Aufrechnungsrecht des Kunden besteht nur, wenn seine zur Aufrechnung gestellte Forderung rechtskräftig festgestellt wurde oder unbestritten ist. § 13 Rechtswahl & Gerichtsstand (1) Auf die vertraglichen Beziehungen zwischen dem Anbieter und dem Kunden findet das Recht der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Anwendung. Von dieser Rechtswahl ausgenommen sind die zwingenden Verbraucherschutzvorschriften des Landes, in dem der Kunde seinen gewöhnlichen Aufenthalt hat.

Die Anwendung des UN-Kaufrechts ist ausgeschlossen.

(2) Gerichtsstand für alle Streitigkeiten aus dem Vertragsverhältnis zwischen dem Kunden und dem Anbieter ist der Sitz des Anbieters, sofern es sich bei dem Kunden um einen Kaufmann, eine juristische Person des öffentlichen Rechts oder ein öffentlichrechtliches Sondervermögen handelt. § 14 Salvatorische Klausel Sollte eine Bestimmung dieser Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen unwirksam sein, wird davon die Wirksamkeit der übrigen Bestimmungen nicht berührt.

good with 3 small cracks of the bottom edge and one partial damage of the edge of the tympanum

Roxanna Brown explained the occasional damage with an ancient Laotian custom: When the owner of the drum passed away, the family break off a fragment of the drum to bury the drum with the owner symbolically.

10 Silver leaf Kammavaca, Burmese Pali manuscript, Mon, 17th to early 18th century Noel F. Singer dated Kammavaca with 4 lines of inked script to „Fourteenth to the first few decades of the eighteenth century… Folios from the fourteens century and later have four lines of ink writing in large square characters on an undecorated gold or silver ground.” (please see Arts of Asia, Vol. 23, No. 3, 1993) Already mid 18th century decoration between the lines of script appears to have been in practice. Thus the present manuscript should be dated prior to the 18th century. palm leaf, lacquer, surface finished with silver coating, large tamarind seed script, script called “magyi si sar” = tamarind seed script, 15 gauzy folios with two wooden covers, folios marked with round Burmese letters, first folio is missing wooden cover: ca. 54,2 x 9,2 cm / 21.3 x 3.6 in sheets: ca. 53,3 x 8,4 cm / 21 x 3.3 in very rare 4-lines silver Kammavaca manuscript with flower pattern, margins decorated in red and gold, considering the age with some old repairs in red lacquer, with a few damages on corners and edges (please see the images), one of a few silver Kammavaca from Mon, which survived the Mon-Burma war and the first and second Anglo-Burmese war.

Noel F. Singer dated Kammavaca with „Six to seven lines of lacquered script between hatched borders containing animals, birds and floral designs on a gold ground. Second half of the nineteenth century until the 1970s.“ (please see Arts of Asia, Vol. 23, No. 3, 1993) palm leaf, lacquer, surface finished with silver coating, script in cinnabar filled with tamarind ink , script square Burmese,16 folios with two wooden covers, folios marked with round Burmese letters, complete wooden cover: ca. 54,8 x 12,5 cm / 21.6 x 4.9 in sheets: ca. 50,4 x 11,3 cm / 19.8 x 4.4 in rare silver Kammavaca manuscript from 1882 (Burmese year 1244) with 6 lines of writing to a page, in rare good condition, only the most minor signs of use and some rubbings (please see the images for details) Dated with a dedication at the inner part of the wooden cover (see fig. 2 from top): „On the full moon day, Monday of Tapotwe, in 1244, Daw Oak with her daughters, sons and husband donate her Kammawa-sa (Pi ta ka pay) to the Lai-Ti monk, U Sar Kara, who lived in Homalin. The donation was made with regard to the Nirvana. Well done, well done, well done for all.“ Price: on request

Singer dated Kammavaca with 6 lines of inked script to „ Second half of the nineteenth century until the 1970s. “ (please see Arts of Asia, Vol. 23, No. 3, 1993) palm leaf, lacquer, surface finished with gold coating, script in cinnabar filled with tamarind ink , script square Burmese,16 folios with two wooden covers, folios marked with round Burmese letters, complete. Covered in the original clothe. wooden covers: ca. 61,5 x 15,4 cm / 24.2 x 6.1 in sheets: ca. 60,4 x 15,2 cm / 23.8 x 6.0 in rare big size Kammavaca manuscript with 6 lines of writing to a page, remarkable perfect condition, only one page with broken corner with old repair (please see the images for details) With a dedication at the inner part of the wooden cover in gold (see image below): „It is donated by Mai Muu, mother of Makai town's leader Thu Gyi, with all members of her family. Donate for Nirvana, for all gods and men. Well done for all.''

Inscription in Burmese on the inside of the wooden front cover (detail).

One folio with previously broken corner was carefully restored, all the other sheets are in excellent condition.

The golden coating shows the typical warm red colour of the Burmese gold.

A complete Kammavaca in this size and condition is a rare collectors piece in museums quality
