ÓPALO PURE FRUIT EXPRESSION MALBEC BY MAURICIO LORCA, FINCA LOS INICIOS, VALLE DE UCO, MENDOZA, 2024

Within a remarkably short period of time, Argentina has gone from playing a minor role on the world’s wine stage to becoming an absolute powerhouse of viticultural production. This success is due in large part to one grape variety. Malbec, whose origins lie in southwest France, has largely become synonymous with the South American country’s high- altitude vineyards. The combination of desert climate and sedimentary soils in Mendoza, where Bodega y Viñedos Mauricio Lorca is based, combine to create growing conditions that bring out the best in the variety and allow it to express its full aromatic potential.

But although Argentina is most strongly associated with Malbec, it’s important to acknowledge the country’s viticultural diversity, as seen in Bodega Lorca’s full range of wines, which run the gamut from the perfumed Poetica White Blend, through to full-throated expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Bonarda. All these grapes are vinified with precision and care in the bodega’s state-of-the-art winery in Lujan de Cuyo, situated a short distance away from the towering Andean mountains.

Deep ruby hue with a purple rim. Classic modern Argentine Malbec, with the firm grippy tannins so typical of the variety, but also the dense red cherry fruit, tinged with notes of smoky tea leaves and liquorice. Juicy and bright on the finish. 2026-2030 – nh

Medium purple hue. This leads with fresh, juicy notes of boysenberry, black cherry, forest floor, red cherry and white pepper. In the mouth this has a lovely whack of juicy black fruit, including cherry and plum. The acidity is vibrant and the tannins are ripe and melded. Such a delicious glass of wine at this price! 2026-2029 – mp

Mid-ruby hue. A distinct sweet-sour character, with lashings of ripe cherry and redcurrant fruit accompanied by Bonarda's typically high levels of acidity. There are notes of liqueur chocolates, tar, and blackberry, too. 2026-2028 – nh

Medium purple hue. Lovely aromas of crushed blueberry, blackberry, pencil lead, ink and tobacco from this thoroughly decent running mate to the Malbec. As expected, this shows a little more structure, with assertive tannins that provide a lovely, dusty finish. This is long and assured – a great partner to red meats. 2026-2029– mp

LORCA POÉTICO WHITE BLEND, FINCA LOS ALTEPES, VALLE DE UCO, MENDOZA, 2024

Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc

40 $ 240

Medium lemon hue. Much better than I imagined! This has a beautiful nose, with subtle oak notes of cream and vanilla, plus floral hints of honeysuckle and ripe stone fruit including peach and apricot. The winner in the 'gently oaked white' category is unquestionably this surprisingly complex blend of three unlikely bedfellows. The oak supports jasmine, honeysuckle, cream, yogurt, peach, red apple and melon, and the finish is genuinely long. A winner despite my initial misgivings. 2026-2028–mp

GRAN ÓPALO PURE FRUIT

EXPRESSION BLEND BY MAURICIO LORCA, FINCA LOS INICIOS, VALLE DE UCO, MENDOZA, 2023

Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot

Deep, youthful hue. Big, bold red from a single vineyard in Argentina's fashionable Uco Valley, beginning to show the complexity expected of these classic Bordeaux grapes. Deep ruby hue. This has a beautifully precise nose, with aromas of cooked black plum, black cherry, mulberry, crushed blueberry, cocoa powder, wet leaves, dark chocolate and menthol. The palate has the silkiest of tannins, and layers of black fruit supported by obvious yet balanced oaky notes. Cherry, plum, blueberry and blackberry are joined by incense, vanilla and pencil shavings. The main attraction, however, is the clearly defined fruit flavours that drive a most impressive finish. A stunning example of Malbec. 2026-2030–mp

MAURICIO LORCA GRAN PETIT VERDOT, FINCA LOS ALTEPES, VALLE DE UCO, MENDOZA, 2022

Deep ruby hue. It's exceptionally difficult to write 'ripe' and 'Petit Verdot' in the same sentence. A notoriously tannic and unapproachable late ripener, it's a grape to be handled with the utmost care. Having said that, this may be the most complete Petit Verdot to have passed my lips. The nose is massive and yet delicately partitioned, with the violets, mint and bay sitting next to red plum, raspberry jam, tinned strawberries and wood-derived flavours of black pepper, cedar, vanilla and clove. The length is, frankly, phenomenal, a core of dusty tannins adding a perfectly judged vegetal hint. Epic: buy it. 2026-2032–mp

CHILE

Villard

Fine Wines

I was lucky enough to spend a month visiting vineyards in Chile in 1988 when, to put it mildly, most of the wine was not fit to export. The transformation since then has been extraordinary, driven by visionaries like Thierry Villard, who recognized not just Chile's wonderful climate for growing vines but also how to realize the commercial potential. Thierry and his family have established the Casablanca Valley as one of Chile's top regions for cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, producing wines with exceptional purity of fruit and world class varietal expression. As their knowledge of the region has grown, Villard have also found exceptional sites for Sauvignon Blanc and Syrahvery much a producer to follow.

CHILE

Viña La Rosa

Deep purple hue. Whilst still very young, this is an impressive Carmenère from the littleknown but high-quality region of Peumo. It has bright, primary flavours of blackcurrant and tapenade and will benefit from maturing for a further 2 or 3 years. 2026-2028 – rb

Viña la Rosa are one of the oldest wine families in Chile with well over 100 years of history and experience behind them. They are based in Peumo, generally considered one of the top sites in the Cachapoal Valley and closer to the cooler Coastal Range than the Andes. This is a big advantage for producing Carmenère, a lateripening grape that needs cool moments to balance the sun's warmth - and a grape for which Viña la Rosa have earned an enviable reputation.

Viña La Rosa has rebranded Cornellana as Quinta Las

Cabras to better reflect the brand’s deep connection to its origins and heritage. The new name pays tribute to the traditional family estates where generations, passionate about the land, cultivated both wine and community. These quintas were home to countless stories, embodying a way of life rooted in authenticity, care, and respect for the land. The rebrand invites wine lovers to reconnect with their roots and rediscover the essence of origin. It’s a celebration of place, family, and the enduring tradition of Chilean winemaking.

and Carignan rule in this area, producing characterful reds in vineyards in Collioure, Maury, Corbières and the Agly Valley. However, as Fergal and his winemakers have explored deeper in the region, notably in Limoux and Aude, they have found sources for top class whites and rosé too. Very much a label to watch.

MONTSABLÉ CHARDONNAY, IGP HAUTE VALLÉE DE L'AUDE, 2024

Pale salmon in the glass, the nose is lively with fresh aromas of strawberry, red currant, sour cherry and raspberry. From the first sip it's clear that this is an exceptionally joyous and uncomplicated rose ideal for deckchair hoovering by the pool. The palate leads with candied red fruit including cherry, currant and plum but the finish includes a twist of Parma violets, cinnamon, thyme and rose petal. The acidity is more than up to the job and the finish is surprisingly long. A delicious glass of rosé that would be three times the price if it were from Provence. 2026-2027– mp

Pale lemon hue. A true revelation, this is a beautifully crafted Chardonnay from the Languedoc. Surprisingly low in alcohol at 12.5%, it offers great depth of flavour, complexity, grip and a core of minerality reminiscent of a Grand Cru Chablis. 2026-2027 – rb

To be honest, I find these two wines remarkable. From the Aude Valley, best known for inexpensive French plonk, they just show what is possible if you understand the Pinot Noir grape and take the time to find cooler, mountain sites to plant the vines. This is a pair of highclass wines, showcasing the perfume and purity of fruit of this wonderful grape - refined by highly sensitive winemaking.

MONTSABLÉ RESERVE PINOT NOIR, IGP HAUTE VALLÉE DE L'AUDE, 2024

Medium cherry red. For those who might think that France's Aude Valley might be too hot for the sensitive Pinot Noir grape, this will be a welcome surprise. It offers attractive red fruit flavours supported by notes of grilled nuts from oak ageing –nicely balanced, not too heavy and most refreshing. 2026-2028 – rb

Medium ruby hue. Impressive Pinot Noir from a part of France not normally associated with this fragile grape. Ripe and flavoursome, with well-judged oak, it has moderate tannin and a structure to suggest that it will continue to improve for a year or three yet. 2026-2029– rb

OPIMIAN'S MASTERS OF WINE LAUNCH A NEW ALSACE ERA

Alsace is in many ways an anomaly in France - it has a warm, dry climate that belies its northerly latitude and is best known for white grape varieties that have more in common with Germany. But it is a gem, a beautiful region to visit, very welcoming vineyards and, in the view of many, the best food in France. Maybe its wines will now receive the attention they deserve - with prices of the dry whites from Bourgogne and the Loire having increased markedly in recent years, Alsace has never looked better value. Preiss-Zimmer is a respected, traditional house, founded in the 1840s and well-known for producing benchmark examples of Alsace's classic grapes.

Riesling is widely to be considered one of Alsace’s ‘big four’ grapes – it’s certainly one of the only varieties permitted in the region’s most prestigious grand cru vineyards. This mixed case provides a crash course in getting to grips with the way this classic grape expresses itself in Alsace, with a pretty, fruit-driven Riesling and a slightly more savoury, slightly more serious, mineraldriven Reserve bottling.

PREISS ZIMMER PINOT GRIS / PINOT GRIS RÉSERVE CASE3 BOTTLES EACH

Alsatian Pinot Gris is a completely different beast to the Pinot Grigio of Northern Italy, even though the same grape is at the heart of both styles of wine. This particular duo provides you with an exploration of the hedonistic side to Pinot Gris’s personality, with a juicy, fruitdriven take on the style as well as a more opulent, richly textured Reserve wine for contrast.

TANAGRA

Chile has gained an international reputation for producing good value wines with excellent purity of fruit and varietal expression. Simultaneously, the Villard family has spent the last 40 years exploring every slope and hollow of the Casablanca Valley, identifying the truly exceptional sites for each grape. Renowned for their Syrah, Villard Fine Wines have found an outstanding 1.5-hectare plot on a slope facing the cold Pacific Ocean that provides the ideal terroir for producing the small yields essential for age-worthy wines - and on which they have planted bush-trained vines that are, of course, hand harvested. The Syrah they produce from the Tanagra Vineyard really is a superb effort, stylistically not dissimilar to the great Syrahs of the northern Rhône, offering a little more richness of fruit on the mid-palate.

MAURICIO LORCA ANCESTRAL MALBEC VERTICAL TASTING CASE - 1 BOTTLE EACH, 2020, 2021, 2022

Mauricio Lorca's Ancestral Malbec stands at the pinnacle of the Argentine bodega production. The Malbec grapes that go into this cuvée are sourced from the Los Altepes vineyard in the Uco Valley, an area widely considered to have some of the finest terroir in the Mendoza region. High altitude and wide diurnal variation in temperature produce grapes with rich aromas, brisk acidity and fine-grained but firm tannins. These factors, combined with diligent attention to detail in the winery, result in a powerful but elegant wine that is delicious in its youth, but will also repay ageing in order to fully unfurl and reach its true potential. A trio of different vintages in this offer will allow you to pinpoint the precise moment along the wine’s development curve that hits the sweet spot for your tastebuds.

IN THE SPIRIT OF

Water-white hue. Intense and harmonious, this is a fine tincture led by warming spices rather than juniper. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, liquorice and angelica are all here, adding healthily to the balsamic notes of juniper. The palate reveals a citrus twist, with orange and grapefruit, while the alcohol is warming rather than harsh. The long finish is driven by autumn spice, juniper, and mandarin orange. Aromatically complex and balanced.
