CELLAR OFFERING 194 Austria, the German Rhineland, and Italy
Austria is one of the most fascinating wine countries in Europe today. Steeped in culture and history, it has a winegrowing heritage stretching back over three millennia. It produces some of the best quality wines in the world, with many grape varieties not grown elsewhere. Remarkably, while Austrian wines are the major success in the USA, they remain relatively unknown here in Canada. German wines mainly come from vineyards close to the Rhine River or its tributaries. In recent years they suffered an image problem due to misconceived wine laws which encouraged mass production of cheap wines. However, with the emergence of a new generation of dynamic winemakers whose goals are maximum concentration of aroma and flavour, the return to quality has been astonishing. Cellar Offering 194 shines the focus on top-notch producers who achieve excellence through deliberate low yields associated with late and selective picking for maximum ripeness. Despite a timeless history it is only within the last few decades that Italy has been recognized as a foremost quality wine producer. There is huge variety with wines coming from more than three hundred different classified regions making it the second largest quality producer in the world behind France. Its topography, a country of mountains, lakes and seashores, makes it perfect for winemaking, but it is the considerable climatic variations between the country's wine regions that enhances the diversity and interest of its wines. JOST AND CHRISTOF HÖPLER, HÖPLER WINERY Breitenbrunn, Burgenland
Opimian has had a close relationship with Jost Höpler since he opened his winery thirty years ago. As he says, “It takes time, it takes passion. We give our wines the care they require. We bestow as much passion as we have on them and we use as much sensitivity as it takes. Our wines grow and mature in harmony, develop strong characteristics and find their own identity. Their origins always remain pure and close to their homeland.”

Although little known outside Austria, many will protest that if there were to be only one white grape left the first choice should be Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s national variety. It has presence in the glass with a beautiful silver colour tinged with subtle shades of green, its attractive characteristics coming in part from the primary ancient rock soils. It is subtle, filled with vitality, its nose developing apricot and white cherry. Slightly effervescent, the liveliness extends to elegant charm and balance in the mouth. [01] M8 D8

PINOT BLANC, 2009, QUALITÄTSWEIN, BURGENLAND $29.33
6 BTLS/750 ML $176.00
One of the unsung white grapes of the world, it deserves greater support. Höpler’s philosophy is to produce the best possible grapes; hence the work in the cellar is very light. This has a pale golden colour with shades of green. The bouquet is young, lively and fruity. Versatile with a medium body, the entry is soft with perfect, crisp hints of apples, honey and yeast. It closes pure and clean. [01] M7 D8

6 BTLS/750 ML $193.00
Fermentation in stainless steel resulted in a wine with a precise mineral and fruit nose, powerful, complex fruit and good length. This is a fine, elegant, unoaked Chardonnay filled with citrus fruit flavours and lively, crisp acidity. It is currently a popular option for those who appreciate Chardonnay's typical fruit without the distinctive spicy notes that appear on the palate of oakaged wines. This is precisely what Christof hoped to achieve when he adapted the winemaking to bring out the ripe, yellow apple notes, with emphasis on the elegant and finely balanced acidity. [01] M7 D7
RIESLING, 2009, QUALITÄTSWEIN, BURGENLAND $32.33
6 BTLS/750 ML $194.00
A truly noble grape variety, often called the “King of Austrian wines”, it derives its classy, flint and mineral characteristics from the rocky sub-strata of the vineyards. A beautiful pale goldengreen, the nose is elegant and fruity with attractive notes of herbs and green pine. The entry offers a mix of fruit, predominantly pears with apples and kiwis. The middle palate shows enhanced lime-accented acidity then it fades towards its farewell with a sappy grip of grape tannins. [01] M7 D7

ZWEIGELT, 2007, QUALITÄTSWEIN, BURGENLAND $32.33
6 BTLS/750 ML $194.00
The Zweigelt grape, popular in Canada’s vineyards, is now the most highly planted red in Austria. It was developed in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt when he crossed the Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent Austrian varieties. Matured in old oak barrels for six months, it is a sure classic of its type with a full, purple-red colour, its bouquet bursting with strawberries and fresh herbs while leaving room for cherries and prunes. On the palate, the ripe fruit is reminiscent of plum with pleasant acidity, modest tannins and black pepper. Seductive and elegant, it has medium length with a spicy, balanced finish. M7 D8

BLAUFRÄNKISCH, 2007, QUALITÄTSWEIN, BURGENLAND $32.33
6 BTLS/750 ML $194.00
Höpler is one of the finest producers of this variety. Grown on gentle slopes with diverse soils, both Plachen (brown loess) and Pandkräftn (loess on loam and chalk), the vines roll down towards Lake Neusiedl and benefit from a micro-climate with enhanced humidity and luminosity resulting from the reflection from the lake. The deep purple hue introduces a complex aroma of black cherries, elderberry, chocolate, black pepper, notes of blackthorn and juniper. Dry, powerful structure and smooth tannins are typical aspects of the grape. The substantial mouth-feel with a hint of sweetness shows potential for ageing. M6 D7

CUVÉE K7, 2007, QUALITÄTSWEIN, NEUSIEDLERSEE $39.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $239.00
First there was Austrian red wine and then there was K7, the wine that broke the mold. Jost Höpler allowed his son, Christof, free rein to develop a modern wine that could define Austria’s potential for a world class red. This is the result. Using two French varieties, blended with the more acerbic and pungent Blaufränkisch, the cuvée harnesses the best elements in a synergy of the three grapes. Now a shining, polished, dark red, it is full-bodied and bursting with fruit. The three varietals were matured for eight months in new oak casks, allowing the tannin chains to lengthen, soften and integrate so that all the elements married seamlessly. A wine of the highest quality, it should find a cherished corner in every cellar. M6 D7

The added ripeness of this late harvested wine gives it good weight, a wad of sweetness, but no loss of elegance. “Charm” best describes the balance built on the pale golden colour and complex bouquet which shows plenty of yellow fruit, pepper and spice, citrus and an herbal note. The palate is quite forward with good body and fruit. Rich honey and melon add to the depth of flavour. It is semi-dry with a citrus note and a long finish. [06] M6 D7

How refreshing to find a fine quality Rheingau wine with a simple, no nonsense label! Behind the label the wine is pale golden with a melon and apple nose and the lovely citrus notes of fresh limes. Confectionery perfume, hints of flowers, white fruits
The wines of Franken, in Germany’s southeast, are invariably of superb quality. Unlike other German regions, they are not dominated by Riesling, but by Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau, which make up half the planting. The wine was produced under strict bio-farming conditions, from vines planted in fossilized limestone and degraded clam shells which transmit dry, clean mineral to the wine. The aromas suggest rose petals, apple and apricot. On the palate it is off-dry, the earthy characteristics showing nutmeg in a delicate, but powerfully flavoured finale. [02] M8 D8

AZIENDA AGRICOLA VILLA DI MASER is not every day that one meets an Opimian winemaker whose residence is listed by UNESCO as Treviso Ita world heritage site. This is the case with Diamante Luling Buschetti and her husband, Vittorio Dalle Ore. Their home, the Villa di Maser in the province of Treviso, was built by Palladio, the most influential architect in European history during the Italian Renaissance. Not only is the villa indescribably beautiful, it is decorated with frescoes by Paulo Veronese, one of the glorious triumvirates, with Titian and Tintoretto, of XVI Century Venetian painting.

PROSECCO, EXTRA DRY, DOC MONTELLO E COLLI ASOLANI $28.33
6 BTLS/750 ML $170.00
The grapes come from the Casero di Mezo vineyard on the south facing hillsides of the Maser estate. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the must spends three months on the lees during which time it absorbs light floral nuances. The wine is then carefully fermented for a second time using cultured yeast that works steadily under rising pressure to create the light mousse of fine bubbles which give the wine its elegance and balanced acidity. Delicate straw yellow in the glass, it is charming and aromatic with traces of apple and peach. [03] M8 D9

An elegant, soft wine, attractive to the eye, its mist of fine bubbles presents a bouquet of ripe fruit with a trace of vanilla. Then a delicate dash or two of energetic, ripe fruit enters the palate leaving it refreshed and clean. The mousse is both fine and persistent. [02] M9 D9

This is a lovely white from the estate vineyards located on low, south-facing hillsides close to the villa. It is the best area of the whole denomination producing slow-ripened fruit which gives the wines great elegance and refined, clean minerality. Bright straw yellow with a fine perfume, it shows intense notes of flowers and fruits. Rich green apple aromas are present with sweet and fruity overtones of orchard blossoms, macadamia nuts and honey. On the palate it reveals balanced acidity with fullness, softness and a lengthy finish. [00] M7 D8

Harvested at optimum ripeness, the grapes were taken immediately to the winepress after which the free-run juice was inoculated with yeast. Fermented as though it were a white wine, the juice was separated from the skins before too much pigment darkened the colour. It is delicious and dry, a pink wine to open anywhere, anytime. Enjoy the raspberry and vivid elderberry fruit. The perfumes are light, the tannins hardly exist, the acidity refreshes and the palate is ready for a second glass. Scrumptious! [00] M9 D9

The grapes were picked early, during the first week of September. This ensured that the acidity remained high while the sugars increased during ripening to no more than what was needed to drive the alcohol and to give the wine stability. This keeps the wines fresh and balanced, full-bodied yet fruit-driven, with pristine stone fruit, crushed rock and minerals. A vibrant red from the Negroamaro variety, this classic grape variety of southern Puglia has dominated since the 6th century BC. The name comes from dialect, meaning black-bitter, although it does not taste bitter at all. Growers like the grape because it is resistant to drought and diseases and is capable of producing a good quality wine. In all of Puglia, Negroamaro performs best in the Salento region. Rich, spicy aromas introduce a harmonious, wellstructured wine with well-balanced, strong, but sweet tannins. M7 D8

Grown on water-stressed, terraced hillsides in the centre of Salento County, at an altitude of 350 to 800 feet the vineyards benefit from cool evening breezes that extend the ripening period to mid-October, giving the grapes uniform ripeness without excessive sugar. Believed to be the mother of Zinfandel, this Primitivo has an opaque, black-red colour while the nose shows delicate scents of berry fruits, particularly mulberry and raspberry. The palate is elegant, full-bodied and intense with soft, natural tannins. The presence of buzzing warm alcohol balances the flavours. M7 D8

The combination of the low rainfall and Mediterranean climate, with the striking contrast between day and night temperatures, results in slow ripening with the strong development of complex aromas, rich, concentrated flavours, and ripe tannins. The vines are pruned into low, densely planted shrubs to protect the clusters from the sun. This is a blend of hand-harvested grapes, crushed and fermented, then macerated on the dark skins in large oak “botti”. Robust qualities with dried fruit flavours are accompanied by a creamy, bitter chocolate note balanced by moderate acidity, smokey oak and superb length. M7 D8

Until recently this grape was unknown outside southern Italy. It is now showing the charm, harmony, breed and similarities to its close relative and kissing cousin, the Zinfandel. All the berry fruits are present, but in particular look for ripe brambles and damsons set in a framework edged with Ceylon tea leaves, black olives, roses and elderberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and packed with juicy fruit flavours that give it soft, well-integrated structure with a smooth, dry finish. This exciting red is lush and generous with the stalky tannins softened by maturation for a year in large steel vats. M7 D7

BISSO, DOC SALICE SALENTINO, RISERVA, 2007, LE VIGNE DI SAMMARCO $30.00
6 BTLS/750 ML $180.00
Produced on high ground from a single estate vineyard close to the sea, the impacted limestone soil, with very low nutrients, forces the vines to root deeply, concentrating the extract and flavour profile. This results in a low yield of intensely flavoured fruit that produces a massive wine, thick and dark, almost as deep as Port, but dry. The fruit is so intense that it fills the mouth with freshly picked blackcurrants and brambly fruit. Ripe tannins mingle in layers made up of every red berry. The colour is so intense that it stains the mouth, but draws out the finish, a melee of tannin, spice, dark purple juice and a long finish. M7 D8

The character and power of a gentle giant
The grape bunches are individually selected for perfect ripeness. Gentle pressing allows the juice to run freely without extracting the rough tannins from the pips or remaining stalks. Controlled low temperature fermentation, followed by maceration on the fine lees, helps coax the aromas and flavours from the obstinate grapes so that their full aromatic complexity can mingle with the telltale acidity and underlying tannins of the Primitivo. The wine’s structured and layered palate is awash with notes of tobacco leaves, vanilla, hay, fruit and liquorice, all reinforcing the soft and easy flavours of black fruits, plums and sandalwood. It is, like so many of the wines of the south, truly huge. The colour is colossal, the nose massive and its power provides a knock-out blow. Yet, in spite of all the weight, it is surprisingly gentle because the tannins, which from many other grapes would be overwhelming, are quite soft. This allows for the fruit and acidity to build a smooth mouth-feel with great penetration, permitting the small nuances of secondary flavours to develop and bring more interest to the palate. Rich and ripe, it is warm and fruity on the finish. M6 D6

With more time on his hands, he was able to concentrate on his passion for Italy’s other winemaking regions. He became a négociant, his portfolio boasting a vast variety of wines representing Italy’s best. This new role, which he has embraced with great skill and undoubted talent, has allowed him to find some of the finest wines from the diverse vineyards that produce the harvest of Italy's golden vintages.

ELENA WALCH MÜLLER-THURGAU, IGT DOLOMITI, 2008 $25.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $155.00
As a practicing architect until her marriage to one of northern Italy’s leading winemakers, Elena’s website confirms her delight at becoming the winemaker for the historic Walch winery. She produces straightforward white varietals which she believes are at their best when expressing the pure elements of the grape. The Müller-Thurgau, originally created in 1882 in Switzerland, rarely produces wines with as much depth of flavour as this wine. It is greenish gold and mineral-packed with light Muscat and honeysuckle perfumes, fine balance and an aromatic, full-bodied finish. [00] M8 D8
5520
PINOT GRIGIO, DOC ALTO ADIGE, 2009, E. VON KELLER $27.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $165.00
This variety indisputably produces the quintessential wine of the Italian northwest. Pinot Grigio is light in body, perfumed and delicate. The wine shows an aromatic nose with floral and mineral scents and a well-balanced palate with citrus and touches of sub-tropical fruit, ending crisp, dry and refreshing. The winemaker, Elena Walch, suggests that oak provides elements unrelated to the nature of wine. Therefore, her use of wood with the delicate Pinot Grigio is minimal as she believes too much exposure would adversely influence the natural delicacy of the grape. [00] M8 D8
5521
PINOT NOIR, PRENDO, IGT DOLOMITI, 2008, WILHELM WALCH $27.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $167.00
Although known to be difficult to cultivate, the Pinot Noir is now widely planted in the high alpine valleys. Walch’s wine, with the new denomination IGT Dolomiti, follows the example of the Super Tuscan wines that swept to prominence a score of years ago, as growers tried to realize the best promise of their fruit without being hampered by the DOC regulations. This wine shows genuine finesse with an aroma of cherry pie, blackberries and black peppercorns all edged with slate. A silky entrance to the palate introduces spice, orange peel and apple leading the fruit to faded oak nuances. M6 D7
5522
ELENA WALCH MERLOT, DOC ALTO ADIGE, 2008 $27.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $167.00
Late picking in the cool valleys of the Dolomites allows the fruit to achieve perfect phenolic ripeness prior to the precrush selection of the best bunches. Traditional fermentation with maceration on the skins for twenty days in large vats of Slovenian oak is followed by malolactic fermentation. This produces deeper flavour profiles and intense colour. The wine was matured for a year in Slovenian oak before bottling. In the glass it has an attractive, deep garnet colour and a nose reminiscent of violets and baskets of wild berries, all repeating in the mouth with concentrated, full-bodied flavour. M7 D7

This is without a doubt the finest red grape grown in the Trentino and one of the building blocks of a world class wine. TERRENOSTRE DOLCETTO D’ALBA, DOC, VABEN, 2009, CANTINA TERRENOSTRE $21.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $131.00
There are seven areas of Piemonte which produce Dolcetto, but that of Alba is considered the best. The vines are planted in soils unsuitable for other local varieties and are entirely at home in the light, white calcareous tufa mixed with sand. The opposite of the other celebrated regional red grape, the Nebbiolo, it ripens a month earlier and produces wines high in acidity, but low in tongue-twisting tannins. In spite of the acidic balance, it matures quickly showing natural perfumes of wild flowers with juicy, bitter cherry and nutty almond flavours. Unusual for an Italian red, it is a wine for the summer, served lightly chilled in the Beaujolais style. M7 D8

TERRENOSTRE BARBERA D’ALBA, DOC, AJE’, 2008, CANTINA TERRENOSTRE $22.67
6 BTLS/750 ML $136.00
Clearly high quality with an elegant structure, it pairs the fruit extract with grainy tannins that persist on the palate long after the last swallow. It comes from an elevated moorland vineyard with a deep layer of iron-rich marl and sandstone. This complex soil produces a nose with kitchen spices, rosemary, sage and basil, later developing red cherry and crushed black pepper. These qualities continue on the palate and are woven together with the most subtle structure and great purity. Although it is made with Barbera grapes, the fruit is such that it seems closer to the heavier style of Nebbiolo. It ends with a long, silken texture. M6 D7

NEBBIOLO D’ALBA, DOC, BRICCO REALA, 2008, BEL COLLE $30.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $185.00
The same grape produces Barolo and Barbaresco, two world classics, but unlike those giants, this has very limited wood ageing so it can be enjoyed sooner. Tasting like the grape itself, full of soft, easy juice and ripe black berries, it is as dark as the night. It comes from the upland Langhe moorland where autumn mists cover the vineyards each morning and extend the ripening season. The nose offers earth, coffee beans and liquorice with blackberry and plum. Quite ready to be enjoyed, the fruit is both ripe and sweet, lined with a spicy, tannic grip and a hint of chocolate on the finish. It is a wine to be quaffed along with hearty, cold weather food. 6 BTLS/750 ML $298.00
The company was established in 1976 by brothers Franco and Carlo Pontiglione and by Giuseppe Priola. Located in Verduno close to La Morra, the wine centre of Piemonte, the winery rapidly gained an enviable reputation. This wine, dark and limpid red with gentle fading to deep Siena, is a wine with a velvet mouth-feel, the notable elegance and finesse coming from the complexity of the components that make up the bouquet. Intense perfumes of faded roses mingle with blackberries and light touches of liquorice and black pepper. The palate has rich, savoury warmth, good body and perfectly balanced astringency leaving the mouth with a dry, tannic buzz. After three years it is still closed in and undeveloped; there is the promise of plenty yet to come. M6 D6
BAROLO, DOCG, 2006, BEL COLLE $55.00
6 BTLS/750 ML $330.00
Italians regard “il Risorgimento” as the foundation of their modern nation, but winelovers use the term to describe the resurgence of Italy’s quality wines. This applies nowhere more clearly than in Barolo where the vineyards lie at the heart of Italy’s Golden Triangle between Torino, Milano and Genova. This wine has a garnet red colour with an ethereal bouquet showing tar with a scent of dried flowers and strong mineral notes. The palate is full, rich, fruity, well-balanced and mature with supple tannins contributing to the harmony, intensity and length. This is a classy wine with exceptional richness. M6 D6

Trebbiano di Soave adds interest to this blend of local grapes dominated by Garganega. It is grown on volcanic soil rich in basalt and tufa which gives the wine an interesting background taste of the “terroir”. The grapes are chilled on entry to the winery, cold-macerated then pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks at 18°C. Maturation allows the wine to settle and early bottling preserves both freshness and fruit. The aromas open with the sweet scent of elder and pear blossom followed by ripe apricots, pineapple and melon. The palate is easy with apple acidity adding to the harmony. [00] M8 D9

VALPOLICELLA, DOC, 2009, DELIBORI VIGNETI E CANTINE $21.00
6 BTLS/750 ML $126.00
This classy wine comes from an area that is enjoying a welcome return to popularity. The winemaking follows a path of minimal intervention from the cultivation in the vineyard to hand-picking at optimal maturity, to vinification in stainless steel where natural fruit flavours are preserved. It is designed for early consumption while its vibrancy is at its peak. With a youthful ruby core and notes of violet at the rim, the punchy nose is showing strawberry and redcurrant while fresh acidity and soft tannins provide contrast in the mouth. Its medium-bodied concentration is supported by good length and balance. M7 D8

VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE, RIPASSO, DOC, 2006, I GALLI, LE RAGOSE $40.17
6 BTLS/750 ML $241.00
This Valpolicella of outstanding quality comes from fourteen acres purchased in 1969 by the Galli family. The vineyard, densely planted to restrict the yield size, is sited high above Negrar where the vines are protected from humidity during the ripening period. After a year in steel tank and two in oak casks, it has a concentrated, ruby colour. The nose opens to an array of fruity, balsamic and mineral tones, among which hints of currants, sour cherries and blackberries stand out. Full-bodied flavours flood the palate with a gentle, ripe and swelling structure crowned by rustic tannins that provide balance, interest and great length. M6 D6

AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO, DOC, 2006, AZIENDA AGRICOLA CA’ LA BIONDA $62.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $375.00
The grapes are laid on mats and dried naturally for at least four months, resulting in a weight loss of about forty percent. Crushing of the clusters precedes the cooled fermentation with maceration on the skins for twenty days before ageing in small casks for eighteen months. The result is a perfect marriage of strength and elegance. The deep, ruby red colour hints at its perfume which is an exceptional concentration of wild fruits, chocolate nuances, vanilla and coffee. With the first sip, the wine unfolds its full flavour across the palate; strong, rich and vigorous. From beginning to end, it expresses balance, complexity and refinement. M5 D6

LUCIGNANO CHIANTI CLASSICO, DOCG, GALLO NERO, 2008, AGRICOLTORI DEL GEOGRAFICO $36.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $219.00
This wine comes from one of the great estates of the Chianti district, an area of outstanding natural beauty where vines take their place in agriculture among side olive groves, wheat, beans and forests. Geografico’s Siena vineyards are sited mainly on hills of differing composition with sandstone, ‘albarese’ (limestone) and volcanic soils. Common to all are stones and pebbles that lie close to the surface and, by radiating the sun’s heat back onto the vines during the night, help to ripen the fruit. A brilliant, rich ruby red colour in the glass precedes the spicy nose with notes of flowers and wild berries. Spice continues on to the palate with warm, enveloping red fruit. The wine is dense and well-stuctured with a lengthy finish. M6 D6

VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO, DOCG, 2007, CERRAIA, AGRICOLTORI DEL GEOGRAFICO $47.83
6 BTLS/750 ML $287.00
An amazing escalator of vineyards climbs steeply up the vertiginous hillside to the small town that crowns the summit. This is Montepulciano. When young, the wines are as tough as old leather, but with age come the three “C’s”, complexity, concentration and charm. Geografico’s Vino Nobile has an intense ruby colour that will fade towards garnet as it ages. The aroma develops a distinctly floral perfume of violets, faded roses and heathland gorse while the alcohol buzzes on the palate prolonging the flavours. Dry and still tannic, the hints of vanilla add charm to beautiful balance and a notable structure. M6 D6

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, DOCG, 2005, AGRICOLTORI DEL GEOGRAFICO $64.00
6 BTLS/750 ML $384.00
Of all the great red wines of Tuscany, this is the greatest. Sadly, it is also by far the most expensive. Brunello is a wine with unique longevity and only improves as the years pass. The 2005 is close to perfect. Made traditionally, it is only starting to open up now. The vineyards of the castle lie on the north side of the hilltop town where the acres are farmed by the Squarcia family. Their wine is deep ruby red in colour and full-bodied with soft tannins and ripe fruit. It offers beautiful aromas of dried roses, violets, blackberry and cigar box. On the palate, flavours of redcurrant, mint, rosemary and anise intermingle nicely with the integrated oak. Rich and velvety it will last for another ten years. M6 D6

SERAPHICUM, IGT TOSCANA, 2008 $29.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $177.00
This is a “Super Tuscan” from the famous Carpineto winery founded by Giovanni Sacchet and Antonio Zaccheo in 1967. Their mission was to produce the finest wine of Tuscany, but as years passed they realized that the best wine would benefit from the addition of non-regional grape varieties, in this case Cabernet Sauvignon. Vibrant ruby red in colour, it has great aromatic complexity and full fruit aromas. With initial cherry and strawberry on the palate, hints of black pepper and herbs follow. This wine impresses with its excellent body and sturdy structure. M6 D6

VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DI JESI CLASSICO, DOC, 2009, FOLLONICA, CASA VINICOLA S. PIERSANTI & C. $16.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $99.00
One of the finest examples of Verdicchio, this wine is packed with flavour and depth. It is a real treat from the well-known Piersanti winery that makes top class Verdicchio. The winemaking skill is obvious. Although Verdicchio is little known, it is a serious varietal. Wonderfully aromatic with weight and presence, this is a wine with great quality. Piersanti’s vineyards at over 300 metres altitude require a longer ripening period, resulting in greater concentration of aromas and sugars. [00] M8 D9

ORVIETO CLASSICO, DOC, 2009, FRATELLI CORSI $16.67
Clean, dry, mineral
6 BTLS/750 ML $100.00
The fortified medieval city of Orvieto stands on a block of rock, vertical and proud above the plain. Around its foot lie endless swathes of vineyards that produce attractive white wines to quench Rome’s thirst. After the harvest, part of the yield was macerated at lowered temperatures for six hours to extract the distinctive qualities of the fruit. This was then blended with fresh, pressed juice producing a straw coloured wine. Corsi now only offers the higher category “Classico” which has long-lasting flavour with floral aromas and hints of ripe fruit. Generous and well-rounded it has a lingering and pleasing dry finish. TORREBELLA MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO, DOC, 2009, FRATELLI CORSI $15.50
6 BTLS/750 ML $93.00
This is one of the wines that define a region or a country. Like Rioja from Spain or the Carmenère of Chile, the Montepulciano is the standard bearer for Abruzzo. Well-priced, the grape offers tannic and tough characteristics and produces a firmly structured, balanced wine with a clear, ruby red colour. The intense red berry bouquet is complemented by a hint of wild flowers. On the palate, the tannins are well-embedded and their presence is noticeable. Flavours of cherry and redcurrants, with underlying tobacco notes, come striding through and fill the mouth with attractive red fruit. M7 D7

INZOLIA, IGT SICILIA, LA FERLA, 2009, CANTINA VITICOLTORI ASSOCIATI CANICATTÌ $20.17
6 BTLS/750 ML $121.00
A group of farmers and winemakers, headed by President and Managing Director Giovanni Greco, originally produced this dry white as a tribute to Sicily’s historical wine industry. It rapidly became far more than that when its outstanding freshness and balance were recognized. Light straw yellow in colour with a green hue, it is intense with integrated aromatic notes of citrus, tropical fruit, white peach, pink grapefruit and wisteria. On the palate it puts forth lovely lime acid notes with elegant mineral elements. The acidity is wellintegrated with the fruit, making for a harmonious whole. [00] M8 D8

NERO D’AVOLA, IGT SICILIA, LA FERLA, 2008, CANTINA VITICOLTORI ASSOCIATI CANICATTÌ $21.00
6 BTLS/750 ML $126.00
Just a handful of dedicated producers have led the revolution in Sicilian quality winemaking, in particular bringing the local grape, Nero d’Avola, back to prominence. La Ferla is gorgeous and smooth. With a deep, concentrated colour, it has the typical spiciness and power of the grape. Fruity, balsamic and mineral tones on the nose give hints of currants, sour cherries and blackberries. It is full-bodied with increasing mellowness on the palate as the fruit harmonizes with the firm structure and soft, persistent tannins. M7 D8
