CELLAR OFFERING 193

The wines of the Rhone, Argentina and Chile

There are few wines from any region or country that offer such outstanding value than those of Chile, Argentina and the Rhône Valley. The Rhône is dominated by small artisanal growers whose wines are outstanding, although their vineyards are frequently too small to create any individual market impact. Chile and Argentina, on the other hand, have a seemingly inexhaustible acreage with huge vineyard estates producing increasingly fine wines from soils and climates that deliver wines with generosity, fruit impact and soft characteristics.

BERNARD PERRIN, Viticulteur-Récoltant-Négociant

Our working relationship with Bernard Perrin began more than a decade ago. He was the inspiration and industry behind Opimian’s hugely successful selections from fine Beaujolais estates. Living in the Rhône Departement and close to the northern Rhône vineyards, it was logical to extend our collaboration to include some of the greatest domaines of the Rhône. The vignerons work with undiluted passion to produce truly great wines which, before our interest, had never been exported.

DOMAINE VILLABEA, AOC CONDRIEU, 2008 $59.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $358.00

If Viognier means a light, oily wine from South Australia, this wine is not for you. Villabea’s wine is a complex, contemplative monster. The grapes come from a tiny area of the northern Rhône where vineyards are counted in square metres rather than acres. This is the cradle of Viognier, a variety that until relatively recently was within a few acres of extinction, due to the difficulty with selling such a huge and complex white wine. The colour is close to apricot tinted golden with an equally unexpected aroma. Typically the bouquet offers dried fruits and toasted nuts with diverse scents of tropical fruit, honey and vanilla. On the palate, figs with mineral undertones precede a luscious, unctuous finish. [00] M7 D8

Great wine, powerful, scented, a rich experience

6 BTLS/750 ML $157.00

Florian André has produced six vintages since he assumed control over this famous Tavel estate, which shares the same extraordinary ground surface of large pebbles and arid sand as nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape. True or false, the rosés of Tavel have been acclaimed as the greatest in the world. This is wine of outstanding quality and concentration. The vines of the estate are between forty and ninety years old, each producing no more than a kilo of grapes, making one bottle per vine. Using a blend of seven varieties, the hand-picked grapes are quickly pressed, allowing orange-pink juice to run directly into cooled fermentation vats. It is fresh, robust, fruit-driven and long. DOMAINE BERTHET-RAYNE, CUVÉE PRÉSTIGE CASTEL MIREIO, CAIRANNE, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES, 2009 Cairanne was the first village in the southern Rhône to be recognized as the source of special, high quality wines. The village itself is ordinary, somewhat extended and has little charm, but the wines are close to the class of the great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This unusual white is a unique blend of six varieties, each bringing their own characteristics to the party. The palate is filled with solid, powerful fruit while the nose remains fragrant with floral perfumes and grapey nuances. [00] M7 D7

DOMAINE VILLABEA, AOC CÔTE-RÔTIE, 2007 $62.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $372.00

The domaine has a handful of acres above the small village of Condrieu, facing to the east where the vines are well-sheltered. Côte-Rôtie is another anachronistic wine from a vineyard where, to reach their vines, the owners must climb precipitous steps cut into the rock on terraces clinging to steep slopes high above the river Rhône. This is classic CôteRôtie, a wine that reveals its traditional qualities in the perfume of raspberries and violets and a palate of dense, black fruit and ripe tannins. The saturated colour and the deft use of oak maturation add a suave polish to this wonderful, justly celebrated, wine. M6 D6

DOMAINE GILLES FLACHER, AOC SAINT JOSEPH, 2008 $33.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $200.00

The work in the vineyards is as chemical free and organic as possible. Produced from 100% Syrah from Flacher’s oldest vines, it is hand-picked in the pre-dawn to transport the chilled grapes quickly to the winery for crushing. The mash of pulp and skins then undergoes a traditional vinification with fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by a long maceration of twenty-five days. The wine is then aged in new oak to add complexity, depth and to build on the finely tuned bouquet and palate. The nose is rich and complex with chocolate and mocha underpinned by fruit and a hint of tobacco. The tannins are well-integrated and contribute to the wine’s complexity, concentration and grace. Like many of his friends, Luc Tardy is dedicated to bio-dynamic viticulture, environmentally friendly farming, where vineyard work is designed to reduce the use of chemicals and pesticides. This cuvée, produced from low yielding vines between forty and sixty years old, was checked daily during ripening for the perfect balance of sugar, acidity and fruit. After hand-picking, the fermentation took place in wooden vats with the skins punched down twice daily to extract full colour, flavour and tannins. Fermentation was followed by maturation in oak casks for a year adding further structure and broadening the palate. Sharing red fruits and blackcurrants on the nose with hints of violets, it has flavours of stewed plums and black fruits against a solid wall of ripe tannins. M6 D6

DOMAINE DES ROMARINS, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE, 2008 $21.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $131.00

The judges must have had an off day to have restricted their award to a silver medal as this is outstanding, a wine following in the long line of successes from the Fabre cellars. The vines are mainly Grenache, some dating back to the early 1900s. The remainder are equally mature Syrah and Cinsault. Balanced by fine acidity and rounded tannins, fruit dominates the nose and palate. The wine was matured in small, used oak casks for six months, as Xavier likes his wines to show elegance rather than muscle. Already showing good depth and complexity, as the tannins mature the wine will acquire more weight and penetration in the mouth. M6 D7

DOMAINE DES ROMARINS, SIGNARGUES, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES, 2008 $24.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $145.00

Family pride inspires the quality of Fabre’s wines. Xavier works with his father, Francis, in the vineyard and the winery. Grandfather calls the shots from his seat under a great tree outside the cellar door. Clearly the paternity system works as it is difficult to fault the wines. This, from the Signargues plateau, is their best wine. Ruby red with an enticing aroma of red berries, the palate is well-rounded with subtle flavours of raspberries and plums. Smooth, ripe tannins give balance and length. M6 D7

Vincent is proud to be awarded his “Bio” label

6 BTLS/750 ML $122.00

Vincent Rochette does not shy away from experimenting with new techniques to improve his wines, recently embarking on a program to reduce chemical intervention while bringing his vineyard up to “bio” certification. With vines in the communes of Visan and Buisson, the diversity of the terroir explains the complexity of the wine. In the vineyard everything is manual, from leaf plucking in summer to the harvesting of the fruit. In the winery minimum intervention is used throughout fermentation and the ageing processes. A particularly well-sculpted Côtes du Rhône, it offers intense, fleshy, full-bodied red fruit packed with mulberry spice and damson. M7 D7

This wine never fails to please

6 BTLS/750 ML $171.00

We were welcomed to the isolated domaine by Emmanuel Bouchard. His beautiful home, a simple, ancient Provencal stone farm, lies hidden behind drifts of wild lavender and olive trees. It is a haven with no other property in sight from house or vineyard. Our exclusive cuvée, a gold medal winner at the Vinsobres wine fair in 2009, produced low volumes; it is rich in dark, juicy fruit with highly accented cassis notes integrated with delicately stated smoke that carries harmony of soft flavours and dense tannins. Every previous Opimian offer from this estate has gone on to win a senior Gold Medal at the Concours Agricole de Paris. M6 D7

DOMAINE VINCENT ROCHETTE, VISAN, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES, 2008 $21.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $128.00

The wine has mighty concentration with powerful aromas of raspberries and a liquorice spice background. Lurking in the nose there are notes of fallen leaves and forest perfumes, particularly pine from the use of oak barrels for eighteen months maturation. Like Vincent’s other wines this has been certified and granted the Ecocert Bio label. The colour exhibits a deep, bright hue with tar, smoke and hints of plums emanating on the nose. A wine with a lovely mouth-feel, it is enriched by damsons and fruit touched by smoke. The tannins are muscular, but quite supple on the long finish. M6 D7

5430

DOMAINE DES CÔTEAUX DES TRAVERS RÉSERVE, RASTEAU, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES, 2008 $29.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $178.00

The owner, Robert Charavin, is considered the superstar of Rasteau. His estate has been the top property for decades. His passion, other than wine, is finding great local food to complement the opulent fruit of his reds. An entirely selftaught winemaker, he passionately believes in low yields, only thirty-five hectolitres per hectare for this Villages wine, and extended fermentation. He follows a winemaking technique that ensures maximum flavour extraction from his Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes, cold maceration before fermentation for between twenty and thirty days. The wine was matured in concrete tanks for a year before racking into oak for six months. There is no filtration before bottling. M6 D6

5431

DOMAINE BERTHET-RAYNE, « TRADITION », CAIRANNE, AOC CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES, 2008 $25.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $153.00

Michel Berthet-Rayne displays great pride as he charges around his “chai” drawing samples from each cask to show to visitors. Although the 2008 vintage was difficult, the rigid selection of good fruit allowed him to make a delicious, warm and mouth-filling wine with a deep colour and engaging aroma of red fruit and spice. Medium-bodied and supple, the wine shows generous, textured forest fruit, fine-grained tannin and a soft finish. M7 D7 Robert Charavin, Domaine des Côteaux des Travers

Suffices to say this is one of the great estates from a fine wine village in the heart of the best part of the Rhône. Its colour is huge and thick and the bouquet fully perfumed. The fruit is perfectly ripe and wraps the tannin in a soft envelope. In the mouth it is sweet and enhanced by notes of wood smoke from barrel maturation. If wine can be chewy, then it is this. The sense of the grape’s ripeness is tangible, the flavour covers the tongue and eventually, but not quickly, takes its leave with delicious notes of warm blackberries and chocolate-accented tannins. The vineyard lies high on the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail, facing due south and sheltered from the north winds by rocky peaks and crags. The unusual yellow soil, a mixture of broken limestone, sand and clay, provides a nutrient-low environment which naturally restricts crop levels. Guy Jullien follows a low yield strategy which concentrates the flavours. This has been accentuated by maintaining an Ecocert Bio regime together with active foliage reduction during late summer. The wine has a fine, vibrant colour with a rich, jammy bouquet and tight tannins that give a persistent grip to the ripe flavours. M7 D7

DOMAINE DES CIGALONS, AOC CHÂTEAUNEUF-DUPAPE, 2008 $41.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $248.00

A newcomer observing the surface of the ground would be inclined to pack up and move on. It is entirely composed of a deep layer of small, rounded pebbles, a daunting prospect for the vigneron and the vines which must struggle to find water in an alien environment. The roots drive deep between the stones to survive, concentrating their energy on the fruit which produces a small, restricted harvest. Christian and Dany Berthet-Rayne invest all their passions and energies into their wine and are rewarded by producing one of the appellation’s greats. The 2008 vintage is full-bodied with flavours of smoke, kirsch and cherries. It is forward and well-developed with rounded tannins and a rich, smooth finish. M6 D6

5435

CHÂTEAU DE MANISSY AOC LIRAC, 2008 $25.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $151.00

Taking over a two hundred year old domaine from the Pères Missionnaires de la Sainte-Famille would have been a daunting task for most vignerons, but young Florian André has succeeded so completely that he is counting an increasing haul of gold and silver medals. Traditional winemaking allows the fruit to make its own journey from pressing to the bottle, starting with high temperature natural fermentation which increases both extract and colour. Twenty percent of the cuvée was matured in new oak, the rest in old barrels and stainless steel, a mix that adds nuances of vanilla and chocolate with masses of blackberries. Lirac wines, once widely favoured, have slipped out of sight; this fantastic wine must surely create its own following. M6 D7 THE RHÔNE VALLEY BERNARD PERRIN >>

After several years without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, Guy Jullien has been granted Ecocert Bio approval. The result is a lower crop level, but the wines have clean, clear perfume and flavours. A more important benefit is that local native yeasts can naturally ferment the sugars. Being close to the towering Mont Ventoux, the terroir has low nutrient levels which further reduce yields and enhance the quality of the grapes to produce an elegant, stalky, stone fruit and leafy flavour. This is a fabulous wine of outstanding quality. M7 D7

We arrived through a long avenue between the vineyards to be greeted by the owner, Jacqueline Boyer. Jacqueline has now retired, but her daughter Fanny continues to make the wines with brother François working the vineyards. The 2009, a truly fantastic wine, is the finest we have offered from this property. It currently shows a bright purple colour, its bouquet filled with black pepper, crushed leaves, flowers and blueberries. This simple wine is easy and delicious. It has a pale silver, green colour without any of the dull straw tones that come from the use of overripe fruit. The zesty Sauvignon packs its bundle of ripe citrus fruits and mouth-watering acidity. A floral bouquet and subtle hints of herbs add to the freshness. The blend of these two varieties is a sure-fire success with the sturdy Grenache adding substance and body to its partner’s more refined, sweet fruit. The crisp and round finish retains appetizing acidity. [00] M8 D9

When Du Peloux bought this forty-five acre estate it immediately began improvements to the farm and its surrounding vineyard, making great strides where many vines had succumbed to old age. The new plantings are now wellestablished and make their contribution when harvested alongside the older vines. 12 BTLS/750 ML $208.00

The Tempranillo originates in northern Spain. Mendoza’s vineyards are planted at the very high altitude of 4000+ above sea level. Julia Halupczok, O. Fournier’s winemaker, believes it to be the easiest grape with which she works. Yielding a modest crop, its tight bunches produce balanced juice with good acidity and flavour. The nose shows complex aromatics and floral notes illuminated by coffee and cherries. On the palate the hotter, wilder red fruits offer polished leather, tannic Morello cherries and plums. M6 D6

5446

FINCA SOPHIA, MALBEC – TEMPRANILLO, 2005, UCO VALLEY $32.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $195.00

O. Fournier’s 2005 Finca Sophia, a local “super cuvée” blend of Malbec and Tempranillo, is now beautifully mature. It is grown on the estate in ground made up of broken rocks and sand with a loose, easy-draining structure under deficit irrigation. These conditions reduced the yield to less than five tons per acre, but helped to heighten flavour development. The wine is now soft and easy, with a nose of tobacco leaf, a handful of mushrooms and the pick of the year’s ripe berries thrown in for good measure. Complex and elegant, the supple structure shows intense aromas of red and black fruits, spice, minerals, smoke and vanilla. M9 D9

5447

ALPHA CRUX MALBEC, 2006, VALLE DE UCO $54.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $326.00

Named after the brightest star in the Southern Cross constellation, this is the best of O. Fournier’s wines. Such quality comes at a high price, but the effort is worthwhile for one of the finest South American reds. The wine is intense with an opaque core and a purple rim. Showing high levels of fruit with ripe blackberries, plums and strawberries, it has mineral notes from the terroir and a hint of fresh greenness working in harmony with the vibrant fruit. In the mouth the orchestration of all the components is symphonic, the full-bodied mouth-feel closing with the insistent power of warm, earthy tannins. M6 D6

ARGENTINA BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS O. FOURNIER

BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS MAURICIO LORCA Valle de Uco, Mendoza Mauricio Lorca’s winemaking talents have been in demand for a number of years as consultant winemaker to several wineries. Only four years ago, he made the decision to follow his vision and founded his winery where he makes wine according to his own philosophy. He believes that the true fruit and terroir of a wine should be allowed to come through in the glass. To this end, his use of oak is limited. In fact, the Ópalo line sees no oak ageing at all. Described as a star on the rise, his wines have brought him much deserved success.

5448

LIRICO TORRONTÉS, 2009, VALLE DE FAMATINA VINEYARDS, LA RIOJA $18.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $110.00

Torrontés is Argentina’s native white varietal, producing a consistent pale gold wine with a green hint and a powerful, aromatic display. Mauricio Lorca selects fruit from the warmer province of La Rioja, north of Mendoza. The grapes were hand-picked from typical “pergola” trained vines. This long-established system requires the pruning of the vegetation onto horizontal stakes and wires above head height so that the clusters hang down and are shaded from full sun exposure to protect their acidity levels. This wine has an enticing aroma that recalls Viognier with hints of peach, flowers, orange peel and pineapple. In the mouth, it is intense, well-balanced and ends with an attractive, fresh finish. Complex and powerful, it is a stylish version of this signature white wine variety. [01] M8 D9

LIRICO CHARDONNAY, 2009, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $18.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $110.00

Everyday Chardonnay rarely comes better than this. From the celebrated vineyards of Valle de Uco, on the Andean mountainside of Mendoza, the high altitude of the vineyards offers clear air, hot days and cold nights. Mauricio Lorca buys fruit from well-established vineyards with aged vines that are densely planted and trained onto traditional pergolas. The grapes were hand-picked, crushed, and then fermented at low temperature to retain aromatic expression. The wine exhibits a brilliant greenish-gold with perfumes of zesty lime, citrus and tropical fruit all secured by cold fermentation. In the mouth it shows intensity with light vanilla notes and balanced acidity. [00] M8 D8 ARGENTINA BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS MAURICIO LORCA >>

LIRICO MALBEC, 2009, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $18.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $111.00

Partially aged in oak, this vibrant red has fresh-edged fruit with traces of sophisticated oak and mellow spice touched by red berries. The fruit-filled palate expresses gentle tannins at first, but as the tannins build so does the presence of the fruit which persists right through to the rich finish. The oak, tannin, acidity and fruit all come together to make this a very attractive melody. M6 D7

5451

LIRICO CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2009, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $18.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $111.00

This Cabernet Sauvignon is only partially matured in oak. It comes from Mauricio’s Vista Flores vineyard where altitude enhances the solar luminosity and hastens the ripening, requiring the winemaker to watch the fruit constantly to ensure the fruit acidity remains at a high level. Brilliant red with hints of bay leaf, herbs and spicy blackcurrants on the nose, it is typically Argentine. The blackcurrants follow through to the palate with cassis, blackberry, soft tannins, lingering, spicy fruit and a firm finish. M6 D6

5452

LIRICO MALBEC BLEND, 2009, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $18.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $111.00

Mauricio opts for a low yield to maintain the complexity and intensity of the nose and palate a priority. Each varietal is fermented and matured separately to enhance the stylish characteristics of both. Blending produces a deep red colour and complex aromas of plum, cherry and cassis jam on the nose. Rich and piquant, baskets of ripe, red fruit, accentuated by the typical raspberry of the Vista Flores region, linger in the mouth with good balance and persistent fruit. M7 D7

5453

ÓPALO SAUVIGNON BLANC, 2008, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $25.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $152.00

Hand-harvested from traditional, high trellis pruned vines intensely planted at almost 7000 vines per hectare, this wine is un-oaked, Mauricio determined to retain all the Sauvignon Blanc characteristics. Pale silver in colour, it gives a ripe, full bouquet, exuberant and recalling the tropical fruit and banana aromas of its fermentation. It has developed rich, sweet notes in the mouth with a cutting edge of clean, lime-flavoured acidity that lingers on before slowly fading from the palate. [00] M8 D8

ÓPALO MALBEC, 2008, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $27.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $166.00

Another of Mauricio’s wines made without any help from oak barrels, this allows the winemaker to present his wine as a pure and simple expression of the grape. It does help that the fruit comes from a desert with an entirely dependable climate. Dark and plum-tinged, the green leaf characteristics typical of Malbec are matched by fresh and fragrant black cherries and blackberries with a whiff of green. Smooth and fresh, there is good depth on the palate with fine structure and an elegant, long finish M6 D7

A rosy, magenta colour, it tastes as youthful as it looks. The first impressions on the nose are reminiscent of chocolate and cherries. In the mouth, focus is on lashings of sweet fruit, spice and blackberry jam. The tannins seem to be modified by the ripeness and juiciness of the young fruit. They are well-balanced and as the wine ages it will gain complexity and sophistication. M6 D6

ÓPALO SYRAH, 2007, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $27.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $166.00

A bright, polished, moderately deep cerise, the lifted plums, pepper and spice aroma is modulated by a touch of sweetness. The supple, attractive palate laden with fine fruit adds to the entrancing perfumes. This is all backed up by grainy tannins that fur up the palate and add warmth. Fine winemaking has taken the elements and shaken them up in the blending so that texture, structure and elegance complete the package. M6 D6

5457

TEMÁTICO RESERVA MALBEC, 2006, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $30.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $182.00

The Vista Flores Estate is located in the Valle de Uco vineyards at 3500 feet above sea level where the grape bunches were hand-harvested. Yielding a limited vintage of a mere five tons per hectare gives the fruit great concentration. The winemaking involved slow fermentation produced by selected yeasts, followed by a prolonged maceration over twenty-five days. Malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels added finesse in the mouth. The nose has varietal typicality with great harmony between the fruit and oak, added nuances of freshly cracked black pepper and mint. Robust and deep, it is a wine of great complexity, elegance and length. M7 D7

5458

TEMÁTICO RESERVA SYRAH, 2007, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $30.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $182.00

The grapes used in this wine come from selected lots from the Vista Flores Estate. Deep, sedimentary soils made up of gravel, pebbles and sand have low nutrient levels which give the winemaker proper control over plant vigour while aiding to naturally reduce the crop. This enchanting, limited release is a perfect example of the quality that Argentina can produce. The vibrant red colour leads to fresh aromas, ripe fruit, tobacco and leaves from the rain forest. The spicy nose is accented by raspberry and mint with a silky edge that stands out with strength and sweetness. On the palate, the wine shows great length and style. M7 D7

TEMÁTICO RESERVA CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2007, VISTA FLORES, VALLE DE UCO $30.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $181.00

Dressed in a hearty red colour, the wine shows the polished tint that only cask-aged wines can produce. It has already developed a bottle-age nose with compost leaves and fragrant char. Soft, light and mellow in the mouth, an edge of freshness complements the ripeness of the fruit and the tidy notes of carefully orchestrated oak ageing. Spicy aromas recall red peppers. It needs tons of fruit to well over the palate and balance the robust tannins that give it appealing structure and its long finish. M6 D7

The fruit was picked in three separate passes through the vines, taking only the grape clusters that showed the full effect of botrytis dehydration. The grapes were pressed whole then settled for forty-eight hours to clean the juice before fermentation and moderate oak ageing. Displaying a polished, golden colour, the wine is lively with quince and a soft, floral intensity that fills the nose with a bouquet of spring and high summer flowers. In the mouth there is a short initial sharpness of lemony acidity that is instantly balanced by the fruit providing a floral impression with a barrage of sweet flavours. [08] M5 D7

Much improved since its introduction three or four years ago, this is partly because of the slight increase in the percentage of Pinot Noir, which gives the wine added fragrance and tannin. Using only free run and first pressings, the juice was settled by pectin to clean out the solids. Chilled fermentation began with cultured yeast specially selected to make the base for sparkling wine; it was produced entirely in tank, under pressure. An absolutely delicious “sparkler” with a delicate, persistent, fine bubbly mousse, the aroma offers fresh fruit mixed with honey, white flowers and yeast notes. Lemony acidity and balance add to the final good-bye. [02] M9 D9

CORNELLANA SAUVIGNON BLANC, 2009, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $11.67

12 BTLS/750 ML $140.00

The grapes were harvested and brought to the winery by night, then cooled to 8º C for twelve hours to start the enzyme transfer that would assist the preservation of fruit flavour. The free juice was drained, followed by bunch crushing under low CO2 pressure to complete liquid extraction and help to assemble the fruit components. Once settled the clean juice was racked into steel tanks and fermented. The young wine is pale in colour, greenedged with a mineral and cut grass bouquet alongside nettles and green twigs. The freshness is built on mild sweet fruit with neat, well-focused astringency. [00] M8 D9

CORNELLANA CHARDONNAY, 2009, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $11.67

12 BTLS/750 ML $140.00

We start with a green-tinged, straw colour and a bouquet to match. The perfumes are gentle and are washed over by the varietal aromas that were heightened by warm, dry weather in March and April. This weather pattern continued through the southern hemisphere’s winter and spring when the vines started on their annual journey and the flower buds began to emerge. At its heart there is a fruity intensity and light creamy flavour accented by the lime/citric acidity which developed during its six months on the fine lees, resulting in a smooth and clean finish. It is alive with fresh flavours and harmony. [00] M8 D8

The gruff and convivial tannins give length and some warmth which will develop further when the early angularity of youth diminishes and the rich Chilean fruit emerges. M7 D8

Almost all of Cornellana’s grapes are hand-picked because the valley is too steep for machine picking. This guarantees that the grapes reach the winery in fine, unbroken bunches which can be sorted easily to exclude any poor fruit, a major factor in the search for quality. Now a dark and intense purple red, the bouquet is still thick with crushed fruit and oak notes that have yet to marry and harmonize. The mouth-feel is alive with freshness, the dark flavours suggesting cassis, blackberry and cherries. Generous and beautifully structured, a perfect level of grainy tannin gives a textural dimension. It will be delicious when the components synchronize. M7 D8

CORNELLANA CARMENÈRE, 2009, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $11.75

12 BTLS/750 ML $141.00

This popular grape has become one of the most attractive packages to have come out of Chile’s vineyards. Originally from Bordeaux, it was used in the classic blend, but in the late 1800’s was brought to Chile and has since thrived. Harvested at the end of April, the de-stemmed, crushed grapes were fermented at 27°C with skin contact for ten days. Twenty-five percent of the wine was finished in tank with French oak staves before unfiltered bottling. Dressed in a deep purple colour, the bouquet is spice, oak and black fruit. The palate is tannic and features plum and damson alongside a smidgen of oak touched by vanilla. M7 D7

CORNELLANA SYRAH, 2009, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $11.75

12 BTLS/750 ML $141.00

Cornellana planted this part of the estate with Syrah clones imported from the Rhône Valley in 1999. Now mature, the roots have penetrated deep into the poor gravel and alluvial soil where drainage is so instant that irrigation is needed to maintain plant growth, vegetation and fruit development. The vibrant magenta colour leads the way to an aromatic nose showing black fruits with a tar edge and sun-warmed, spicy garrigue shrubs; gorse, honeysuckle and wild rose. The bouquet lingers on with the heady perfume of hedgerow flowers and peppery spice finally introducing the palate which is fullbodied with opulent, berry fruit flavours and toasty cinnamon nuances. It ends with balanced acidity. M8 D8

CORNELLANA CHARDONNAY RESERVE, 2009, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $16.50

12 BTLS/750 ML $198.00

Fine weather conditions continued throughout the ripening until the fruit was picked during the last week of February. These conditions, with open blue skies, constantly warm days and cold nights, helped to fully ripen and fix the fruit acidity. In common with all Cornellana’s whites, the vineyard was night-harvested, the fruit rapidly, but gently pressed then fermented at low temperature before oak ageing for nine months on the fine lees. A brilliant straw-gold with green tints, it is redolent with freshly picked, white peaches and pineapple. Soft fruit gives a generous and persistent middle palate balanced by crisp, citric acidity and ending with a lingering peach flavour. [00] M6 D7

A dry winter in 2007 was followed by the coldest and driest summer for forty years. Late budding combined with the lowered water table resulted in a short vegetative growth cycle. These unusual conditions led to fewer leaves with a reduced crop, both aspects related to high quality. The results show great intensity, good levels of tannin and fruit acid and harmonious balance. It has a crimson colour with lifted aromas of violets, mulberry, cedar, vanilla and hints of forest ferns. The concentrated palate shows ripe, intense, sweet fruit with excellent structure. Fine tannins add balance at the finish. M6 D7

CORNELLANA CARMENÈRE BARREL RESERVE, 2008, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $19.17

12 BTLS/750 ML $230.00

The consistency of Chilean wines comes from warm days, cool nights and little rainfall, but with adequate controlled irrigation water from the Andes. This encourages healthy growth and fruit development and, by reducing water available to each vine, the phenolic ripeness of the fruit is assured. The greatest excitement has come about with the winemakers’ better understanding of their soils and micro-climates allowing them to select the right sites for their vines. The colour is brilliant and concentrated and the nose intense with red fruit and spicy notes. This Carmenère is powerful with smooth tannins on the palate that ensure that the wine has the balance to build softness and body. Big enough to be compared with a bold Amarone, it is superb. M6 D6

CORNELLANA CABERNET SAUVIGNON/SYRAH BARREL RESERVE, 2008, CACHAPOAL VALLEY $19.17

12 BTLS/750 ML $230.00

Before all else, this is a creature of its terroir. The story begins with the earthy structure, grainy tannins and leafy background on which all the subtle nuances are constructed. Predictably the colour is huge, a vibrant cerise, deep to the heart of the glass with powerful, interesting notes of eucalyptus and wood smoke providing the showcase for the core Cabernet attributes of mulberry and clove. With vanilla and smoke from the barrels comes the liquorice and blackberry of the Shiraz. Sweet fruit mingles effortlessly with dusty tannins as the palate builds length with huge fruit. Carefully matured in French oak barrels for eleven months, it has a big structure that needs time to evolve. M6 D7

CORNELLANA CUVÉE GRAN RESERVA, 2008, CACHAPOAL VALLEY [WOODEN CASES] $39.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $234.00

Cornellana always bottles interesting and traditional blends of their finest wines and cuvées to monitor their development. This is done, partly for interest, but equally in the belief of the unique and special qualities of the Cachapoal Valley. The Cuvée project allows José Ignacio Cancino to look for the highest quality and perfect expression of the terroir. The Gran Reserva wines carry the single Cuvée label and represent the union of the best fruit with the artistry of the winemaker. It begins with the opaque colour and follows through to richness, power and concentration, all well-integrated with a show of sweet plum, cassis, chocolate and mint. M5 D6

T. VILLARD FINE WINES LTDA Casablanca Valley We visited Thierry Villard and his new vineyard in 1989. This visit was impressive for his uninhibited Gallic passion which he translated as “elegance before power”. Thierry was then just thirty-one years of age, but he had built a lifetime of experience in France with time spent in Australia and the United States before finding his Shangri-La on the cool slopes of the Casablanca Valley. Many of Thierry’s dreams have been realized and he continues to handcraft great wines in his unique style, emphasizing charm and finesse.

With a characteristic green tinge, Thierry’s wine has a fresh, yeasty bouquet filled with enthusiastic green fruit notes that bring forward heaps of stalky berries and nettles in an abundance of tropical fruit with a goodish measure of gooseberries. It is quite a fruit mêlée in the mouth where the concentrated texture adds crisp stabs of acidity. Towards the end, the onrush and clamour of freshness is accentuated by softer notes that bring elegance and subtlety. [00] M8 D8

Chardonnay is the most versatile and friendly white grape variety. It can undergo any winemaking process from oxidative ageing, ageing in wood barrels and malolactic fermentation in different degrees to successfully create a wine characterized by a rainbow of aromas. Thierry uses all of these techniques to make his wine so that it shows a fresh and complex nose derived from the combination of fruit, barrel fermentation and ageing in French oak. With so much to enjoy it is easy to overlook the displays of soft, tropical fruit and ripe peaches that fill the palate. [00] M8 D8

EXPRESIÓN RESERVE MERLOT, 2007, CASABLANCA VALLEY $19.17

12 BTLS/750 ML $230.00

The grapes were hand-picked at the end of April when the fruit was at absolute ripeness and the fruit acids were elevated due to the high diurnal temperature range in the Casablanca Valley. Showing fine varietal flavours of ripe plums and red berries, the complexity is heightened by ageing in French oak. The deep colour is intense and bright with the aromas of flowers, in particular violets and lilies, intermingling with cherry and jam. Touches of cedar and cinnamon provide complexity and subtle appeal. In the mouth there is a grainy, tannic buzz, the medium body and welldefined softness balanced by firm tannins that produce a persistent attack and long finish. M7 D8

LE PINOT NOIR GRAND VIN, 2008, CASABLANCA VALLEY $35.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $212.00

Thierry only uses hand-picked grapes from his best sites for the three wines under the “Grand Vin” label. The grapes come from a sloping, water-stressed, sandy alluvial site where the vine crops only four tons to the acre resulting in a wine with a concentrated colour. Vivid and aromatic perfumes of black fruit combine with white flowers, violets, sweet spice and herbs. It fills the mouth with a delicious display of luscious fruit, intense flavour and rich texture. The tannins are soft and the full body is richly flavoured with dense red and black fruits. M6 D7
