CELLAR OFFERING 192

The Wines of Spain, Portugal, the Maconnais and Alsace With the passing of summer 2009, the final results of the most recent vintage are eagerly awaited by winemakers and wine lovers alike, but wines from earlier vintages are now maturing and showing the fine qualities of the ripe fruit, the vineyards and the magic of the winemakers’ skills.

A Nation with a Mission

As this offer is written on board a ship cruising off the coast of Spain, the Opimians on board are unanimous in their positive comments on the surprising beauty and quality of Spanish wines as well as the major cities where modernity coexists with evidence of pre-Roman antiquity. Side by side, modern agriculture in Spain shows respect for history. For the writer, a European with a home in Spain, it comes as no surprise. Spain has always been affluent, but since accession to the European Union, it has become markedly a nation on the move. In viticulture, this is only too evident in the outstanding quality of the magnificent wines featured in this cellar offering.

About the Cover As a friend of a friend, Oscar Mariné—designer, illustrator, expert typographer and professional artist— received a bottle of Selectus, a wine that had not yet been released to the public. He loved the wine, but felt that the label did not do it justice and proposed a redesign to Bodegas Los Aljibes. The sensations brought about by the wine were his inspiration; elegance, mystery and the desire to taste it again. Mariné likened the wine’s strength to that of an independent woman. This drawing is his interpretation of the woman that embraces the qualities found in this wine.

SANZ CLÁSICO, DO RUEDA, 2009, VINOS SANZ $20.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $122.00

Rueda, as a wine-producing region, languished in the doldrums until relatively recently. Its rebirth allowed the introduction of new technology which hugely improved the wines. This comes from a winery dating back to 1870 which has largely remained in the hands of the same family. It is one of the most attractive of all Spanish whites with a perfect combination of fruit with acidity and a low buzz of alcohol. Showing youth and great energy, its lime-accented acid gives it the bite and presence that allows the grapey flavours to develop interest in the mouth. [00] M9 D9

5347

LAGAR DO CASTELO ALBARIÑO, DO RÍAS BAIXAS, 2008, BODEGAS CASTRO BAROÑA $29.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $174.00

Albariño flourishes in the north of Iberia, spanning the border between Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia. It invariably produces no more than a modest yield resulting in an elevated price. In spite of this, it is hugely cherished for its outstanding quality. A genuine alternative to better known varieties and far superior to many, it is dry, has a powerful and persistent malic fruit flavour, seamlessly woven into white peaches, straw and damp earth. Full-bodied, it has both power and subtlety, leading to great length and flavour interest. This is a first time offering of this variety which deserves far more attention and is bound to win many devotees. [00] M7 D8

PICULIA, DO TORO, 2008, BODEGAS VALPICULATA $20.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $120.00

Many of the vines in the Valpiculata vineyards are older than 100 years, at which age the yields are tiny, but of superb quality. The ungrafted vines have deep root systems receiving no water except for winter rains. This leads to powerful aromas of toasted new oak, cedar smoke, liquorice, cassis and mineral touches. Rich and concentrated, it is still very tight and closed in, but promises a layered structure that will continue to develop for at least ten years. M6 D6

5349

VIÑA ALJIBES, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA, 2007, BODEGAS LOS ALJIBES $20.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $120.00

From a property that was established only ten years ago on the high plateau halfway between Madrid and Valencia, this wine boasts great quality and remarkable value. Of its 1800 acres, almost six hundred are planted with classic European vines, mainly those of Bordeaux; Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. After fermentation, the young wine spent six months in French oak vats to harmonize. It is now a deep cherry red with a delicious bouquet of ripe red fruit and spices. The full-bodied palate unveils hints of chocolate supported by fine tannic structure. M6 D7

5350

CAÑADA NEGRA, DO VALENCIA, 2008, BODEGAS ENGUERA-EVSA $20.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $121.00

Historically, Valencia produced huge amounts of dull and ordinary wine, but young winemakers have risen to the challenge bringing fresh energy and innovation to replace tradition. As their labels find the market, it is clear that they are truly successful. This blend is rich and deep, the colour close to black, the nose still dumb and hard. The tannins need time to mature, soften and wrap around the dark red fruit. Like many of Spain’s great reds, the blend is dominated by Tempranillo with well-ripened Syrah adding a refined and balanced dimension to the palate which will harmonize within a year to show the ripeness of the fruit. M6 D6

5351

OPIMIAN CRIANZA ESPECIAL, DO LA MANCHA, 2008, BODEGAS FINCA ANTIGUA $21.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $131.00

From time to time our tastings reveal wines too interesting to ignore; this is one. It comes from south of Madrid, the plain of Spain, the land where Don Quixote tilted at the ubiquitous windmills, a region turned green in summer by endless miles of vineyards. Bottled under Opimian’s own label, it is young, stalky, filled with tongue-biting spice and full of earthy notes and ripe black berries. It will develop quickly, softening the attack of the Tempranillo tannins so that the juicy fruit flavours can roam the palate in syncopation with modest notes of vanilla and coffee. M7 D7

MONTE CASTRILLO, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2008, BODEGAS PEÑALBA LÓPEZ $23.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $138.00

The Peñalba López winery is one of the most impressive in the country. Sited in a superbly restored historic castle, the family makes every effort to produce the greatest wines possible from their terroir. This is aged in French oak, as the array of aromas builds in the casks before bottling. Fresh-baked bread, toast, crushed slate, blackcurrants, cherries and spices fill the glass in preparation for the impact in the mouth where huge, succulent flavours show the total concentration of grape extraction. With a big heart, it is one of the finest wines of the entire vintage and region. M7 D7

5353

TAGONIUS SELECCIÓN CRIANZA, DO MADRID, 2007, BODEGAS TAGONIUS $23.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $141.00

Recently bottled, the wine is a modern blend, fruit-driven with red berries overwhelming the tannins giving a mouthfeel that is soft, full, rich and structured. Charm and spice are added by small nuances from oak ageing, giving greater complexity and length. Like many Spanish reds, the tannins are heavy and somewhat tough suggesting that it has considerable ability for maturation. The palate delivers notes of wild blueberry and wild flowers with smoke leading to an opulent wine that retains a savoury, long and elegant structure. M7 D8

5354

ARBUCALA ESENCIA, DO TORO, 2007, BODEGAS VALDUERO $23.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $142.00

Made from small, hand-picked, intensely flavoured Tinta de Toro grapes, the fruit is painstakingly sorted before crushing and fermentation for fifteen days. This produces a highly concentrated, fruity wine with a deep colour and a vivid strawberry aroma. In the mouth, fruit flavours are accompanied by subtle touches of liquorice. Beautifully structured and complex, it has matured for a year in bottle to allow time to soften the tannins. M7 D7

COLEGIATA, 4 MESES EN BARRICA, DO TORO, 2007, BODEGAS FARIÑA $25.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $152.00

Fariña keeps this wine in cask for four months as he wishes the unctuous, sun-ripened fruit to develop the greatest weight both in the nose and in the mouth. The wine is modern in style with perfect balance showing easily accessible fruit with a lively and energetic palate. Made from 40 year old vines and then aged in new French and American oak, the latter provides delicate vanilla notes while the French wood provides smooth tannins and hints of smoke. Complex and structured, this is a noble effort. M7 D8

5356

ONDARRE RESERVA, DOCa RIOJA, 2004, BODEGAS ONDARRE $25.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $152.00

This intense cherry red wine comes from a bodega established in 1986 by the Bodegas Olarra group, one of the best of the traditional Rioja Houses. The winery is within the walls of the medieval fortress in the village of Viana, but there is little of the old in this wine. With separate fermentation of each variety before blending, it is aged for 16 months in American and French finely-grained oak barrels. Released into the market only after reaching its best, it has the vanilla notes of oak ageing with hints of spice and a strong attack in the mouth, the tannins providing the full-flavoured backbone to the long and persistent finish. M7 D7

5357

FAUSTINO SELECCIÓN DE FAMILIA, DOCa RIOJA, 2007, BODEGAS FAUSTINO $27.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $164.00

Ever popular and rightly so, the Rioja wines from Faustino are among the best and most typical wines of the region. Laden with supple, warming notes of chocolate and vanilla, the quality of the fruit emerges to fill the nose and mouth with stylish and soft vinosity giving the wine great poise and its quintessential Rioja personality. Far from the overoaked examples of recent years, this offers the modern elements of dark berry fruit, blueberry and redcurrant with cherry that fits seamlessly into a harmonious, memorable package. 6 BTLS/750 ML $171.00

This is another absolutely stunning wine from master winemaker Gil-Fournier whose South American wines have stormed the continent. A native of Burgos in northern Spain, he is one of very few winemakers who actually change the way wines are made. No aspect of work in vineyard or winery is overlooked. Produced from 60 year old, labour-intensive, bush-trained vines at 2400 feet above sea level, the yield was very low, the complexity and concentration correspondingly high. Fruit leads the palate and piquant spice fills the mouth, adding length and penetration. It is a wine of outstanding quality. M7 D8

TORREMILANOS CRIANZA, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2006, BODEGAS PEÑALBA LÓPEZ $34.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $204.00

Winter brings snow early to the high, windswept vineyards of Ribera del Duero, where the superb Torremilanos castle and winery can be seen across the vineyards. The property was purchased over 30 years ago; therefore the vines are known to be of great age. Peñalba believes that age, together with the heat and cold climate and the clear summer skies which increase the diurnal temperature range, are the factors that bring their fruit to perfect maturity. This is a mighty, mouthfilling wine, stuffed with black fruit, plums and sour damsons with sweet blackberries, earth and green olives making an appearance alongside summer flowers and vanilla. In spite of its concentration, it is eminently drinkable as the fruit is forward and the tannins are soft. M6 D7

5360

VALDUERO CRIANZA, DO RIBERO DEL DUERO, 2006, BODEGAS VALDUERO $38.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $232.00

One glimpse at the winery is sufficient to prove that great capital and expertise lies at the heart of this family-owned bodega. Away from the country road lies a series of huge, hollow pyramids that keep the maturing wines at a natural, even, low temperature so that their progress is constant. This young and maturing wine has a deep ruby colour, very bright and polished, the balanced fruit aromas mingling with spice and balsamic tones. In the mouth, the tannins are integrated, never harsh, but rather silken and adding to the statuesque structure of the palate. A fabulous wine, it is the epitome of excellence that the Tempranillo can produce. M6 D6

BRAÓ, DO MONTSANT, 2007, BODEGAS ACÚSTIC $44.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $266.00

One of the most exciting of the new wines in this cellar offering, this treasure comes from 80 year old vines which produce very low yields. The scarce fruit is filled with quality and power, indeed the word Braó is an old word used in rural Spain meaning courage and strength. The cuvée is made up of Samsó (Cariñena) which gives deep colour, body and ripe fruit flavours and Garnatxa (Garnacha) adding fragrance, fruit and complexity. After fifteen days of maceration, the young wine is racked into new French oak barrels for thirteen months and is bottled without fining or filtration. M5 D6

5362

CADOZOS, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, 2004, BODEGAS DEHESA DE CADOZOS $44.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $268.00

The small estate of 16 acres, located in the 15th century Abbey of San Juan, was recently a stock farm raising fighting bulls. Located close to where the Duero runs from Spain into Portugal, the free-draining, sandy loam of decomposed granite gives the estate unique properties which help in the production of great, cool-climate grapes, particularly in this blend of Tinta Fina with Pinot Noir, a unique, successful marriage. It has an intense, deep red colour, almost thick with extract, leading to fine, elegant and deep aromas. A light mineral background shows off the soft raspberry and strawberry perfumes, directly linking the Pinot Noir. Matured in oak barrels with complete malolactic fermentation, the flavours are broad, rich, structured and elegant. M6 D7

5363

SELECTUS, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA, 2005, BODEGAS LOS ALJIBES $57.17

CORELIUM, DOQ PRIORAT, 2006, TERRA DE VEREMA SL $79.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $475.00

The Priorat area is a beast, arid, mountainous, difficult to visit and awful to work. The vineyards are tiny, hanging from small crags, vines planted in small, water-stressed parcels and yet, even with such obstacles, the wines are glorious. This wine comes from a plot in the village of El Lloar from century old vines. It is a blend of Carineña and Garnacha, so denied water that the juice is thick and filled with powerful aromas of sandalwood, the minerality of crushed slate, cinnamon and fat, ripe black cherries. This is a wonderful wine, an “Alice in Wonderland” fairy tale in the glass, a phenomenon; complex, irresistible and exotic. M4 D4

Respected designer, Oscar Mariné created the label dressing Selectus perfectly in tune with the wine it adorns. Gorgeous, interesting and full-bodied, it is produced from a blend of four varieties, in the style of the Italian Super-Tuscan. The delicate, progressive, hydraulic pressing was so light that the juice formed “tears” as it left the press. After fermentation, the young wine was racked into new French oak for eighteen months for malolactic fermentation and ageing before a final blending in large oak vats. It has a dark colour and a highly complex aroma with minerals and a parade of blackberry, raspberry and prune. The palate is fleshy, fat and balanced. M6 D7

ABADÍA DE SAN QUIRCE FINCA HELENA, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2007, BODEGAS IMPERIALES $90.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $543.00

Another successful, prize winning wine from a recently established winery, it was founded in 1998 by local businessmen and viticulturalists all associated with the Ribera del Duero. After gentle pressing, the crushed fruit was fermented and macerated in oak vats before maturation in French and American oak of different toasting levels to build the complexity of the bottled wine. Crimson/garnet in colour the nose explodes with sweet, lifted aromas of mulberry, cedar with vanilla cream nuances and hints of forest mushrooms. The palate is rich and concentrated with ripe, sweet fruit, intense and complex. Excellent power and structure, with fine-grained tannins lead to a long, elegant finish. M6 D6

The most expensive Spanish wine members will have ever seen, it is unique, a “garagiste’s” wine of which only 1200 bottles are made. From a bodega that was only founded in 2002, if it is rare, it is what the artists in the winery wish. It comes from the hilltop Rioja Alavesa village of La Guardia. Until this masterpiece, the bodega had released just two wines. The palate features elegant black fruits peppered with cedar and firm, fine-grained tannins. Good acidity and great complexity indicate considerable ageing potential. M5 D6 Top Left: Bodegas O. Fournier wood casks Bottom Left: Bodegas O. Fournier viñedo Espaldera

BODEGAS CONCAVINS Montblanc, Barberà de la Conca, Catalonia High on a plateau in the heart of Catalonia, Concavins produces fine wines from traditional Spanish varieties as well as from cherished international vines. Concavins was an under-capitalized cooperative in need of investment until the Carbonell Figueras family took over the winery. Soon afterwards, the celebrated winemaker, Josep Vadri, with experience gained in France, Chile and Australia, was employed to produce the signature wines which show vibrant, fruit-driven styles.

CASTILLO D MONTBLANC, CAVA BRUT, NV $21.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $129.00

The winery takes the three major Catalan white varietals and ferments them slowly before bottling and maturing the wine in the cellar for two years. This extended period produces clarity of flavour with a full and complex aroma. Pale-coloured, more silver than gold, it has lovely fine bubbles that persistently ring the glass. The aromas are small and subtle filling the top of the glass with a hint of toast, a rush of apples and clear nuances that promise elegant flavours. Lively and balanced, the flavour memories endure long after the wine has been enjoyed. [02] M8 D9

MONTBLANC 362, VIURA/CHARDONNAY, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2009 $14.67

12 BTLS/750 ML $176.00

Spain’s popular Viura grape lacks definition and balance until it is blended with another grape chosen to add greater personality and fragrance. With Chardonnay, the Viura becomes soft, filled with mineral-edged notes and balanced, showing sufficient robust acidity to lift the tropical fruit notes of the Chardonnay to higher potential. Concavins keeps the wines apart as they are cold-fermented, left on their lees for two months and then blended for bottling. The 2009 is a superb vintage revealing great potential with the full flavours of both varieties showing early signs of white peach, pears and lychees. [01] M8 D8

5370

MONTBLANC 362, TEMPRANILLO, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2009 $14.08

12 BTLS/750 ML $169.00

Spain’s most popular red grape produces wine with warm characteristics and the perfumes of a spice box. Needing perfect phenolic ripeness if the tannins are to offer supple support to the complex fruit, the vintage was utterly successful. Careful, modern winemaking required pre-cooling before fermentation, resulting in a bouquet featuring tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and saddle leather in synergy with black fruit. M8 D8

5371

MONTBLANC 362, CABERNET/MERLOT, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2007 $22.92

12 BTLS/750 ML $275.00

A typical Bordeaux blend, the arid vineyard conditions associated with the high altitude of the region and the long summer days of intense heat have made this wine fullerbodied than those of the vineyards in France. The colour is intense, a reflection of the low yield from the ripe and deeply pigmented fruit. This depth produces a firm aroma, the tannins carrying notes of mint, rose blossoms and smoke. Powerfully structured, the fruit is struggling to balance the grainy tannins, but as it matures it promises polish, weight and attractive concentration. M7 D7

5372

CLOS MONTBLANC, SAUVIGNON BLANC, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2009 $21.25

12 BTLS/750 ML $255.00

Sauvignon Blanc remains one of the hottest tickets in the wine world and this will not disappoint. Typically, it contains fifteen percent wine from the estate blended with other local vineyards. On the nose, there is beautiful harmony of nettles, apples and lime with hints of summer herbs. At the first entry to the palate, there is plenty of interest in the pleasant and crisp acidity with good fruit and elderflower flavours. It is delicious and fresh with attractive structure and vibrancy. [00] M8 D8

CLOS MONTBLANC, CHARDONNAY, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2009 $23.67

12 BTLS/750 ML $284.00

This is a lovely wine, with a fresh, get-up-and-go vivacity, lively lime zest acidity and masses of youthful, energetic fruit. The nose, still shut in, offers the early signs of pineapple and banana and has started to fill out to form a better balance with the zippy flavours of apples and a curl of orange peel. Weighty extract, a sure sign of the fine vintage, will lead to a richer bouquet. As months pass, it will develop great qualities far beyond its price and modest origins. [01] M7 D7

CLOS MONTBLANC, XIPELLA, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2006 $23.00

CLOS MONTBLANC, MERLOT, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2006 $25.08

12 BTLS/750 ML $301.00

The nose opens with a bouquet of flowers, followed by a dish of summer pudding macerated with fresh crusty bread and warm notes of piquant spice. Clearly the fruit was perfectly ripe, all the different berries laid out for appreciation before coming together in harmony between soft, sweet, juicy Merlot and a firm pillar of grainy, earth-accented tannins. This easy wine throws its weight about and utterly fills the mouth before slowly slipping away to leave the palate filled with spicy memories. M6 D7

5376

CLOS MONTBLANC, SYRAH, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2007 $24.92

12 BTLS/750 ML $299.00

This is fuller, softer and a touch less broad in flavour and bouquet than fine wines of the same variety from the northern Rhône. But many of the same qualities abound, particularly the supple availability of the fruit, the softness of the acidity and tannin and the easy approachability. Much of the quality retention results from the altitude of the vineyards above sea level, where the high daily temperature range helps to protect the fixed fruit acids from diminution as the sugars increase towards ripeness. A fine, deep colour and nose with strawberry, cassis, fallen leaves and shavings of cedar are the introduction to a firm, fruitcentred flavour and persistent tannin. M6 D7

High above the valley floor, Luis Carbonell, Concavins’ founder, owns a windswept vineyard planted with four classic varieties. Following the rainfall which comes in the spring, the vines struggle as they become progressively water-stressed, the grapes more concentrated as the flavours intensify. The varieties are gathered and processed separately before blending to produce this big, bold and balanced wine, which has a great mouthful of spicy, pungent fruit flavours. Deeply coloured, the nose shows attractive cedar smoke, ripe black cherries and concentrated blackcurrant juice. A delicious and complex basket of fruits, the balance is secured by ripe, muscular tannins. M6 D6

VINHO VERDE, DOC VINHO VERDE, 2009, JOÃO SERRA PRIVATE RESERVE $16.00

12 BTLS/750 ML $192.00

Although João Serra retired a couple of years ago, the wine that made his name famous continues to carry his label. It is typical of the delicious ‘vinho” quaffed in Portugal as a midday refresher. Coming from the green countryside of the northern province, the Minho, it is produced from two local varieties, the widely planted Arinto and the lesser known Azal. As neither produces very much extract, the wine is delicate and almost dry, with a miniature “sparkle” adding zest and interest in the glass. [02] M9 D9

CHARDONNAY, 2008, FIUZA, VINHO REGIONAL TEJO, FIUZA & BRIGHT $26.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $159.00

Pioneering the planting of international varieties in Portugal, Fiuza and Bright is a partnership between an old world wine-producing family and a new world winemaker, Australian Peter Bright. The grapes come from Tejo, where they are fermented over several weeks at frigid temperatures, allowing huge notes of tropical fruits to grace the wine in the glass. The colour is perfect, a mix of gold with edges of green that partner the tropical fruit notes to perfection. Full-bodied, it has racy, grapefruit zest acidity and notes of pineapple, melon and nectarines. [00] M7 D8

5379

MERLOT, 2008, FIUZA, VINHO REGIONAL TEJO, FIUZA & BRIGHT $26.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $159.00

The fruit comes from the 145 acre Granja Estate, acquired by the Fiuza family twenty years ago and planted with four classic French varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The soil is entirely white limestone providing an easy draining surface with heat retention and reflection. These conditions ensure that the fruit is entirely ripe and in perfect condition. Traditional winemaking with barrel ageing has resulted in a dark red colour and an intense centre with ripe plum fruit and chocolate nuances. Spice and vanilla notes in the mouth show off the complexity and weight of the fine-grained tannin and dark fruit flavours. M6 D6

QUINTA DA BARREIRA RESERVA, VINHO REGIONAL ESTREMADURA, 2008, JOSÉ GASPAR $24.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $149.00

After a fine summer with high temperatures during August, the fruit was pressed and fermented for thirty days in stainless steel during which the skins were submerged to extract the full colour. After close to a year in bottle, the wine is delicious. A deep garnet colour introduces concentrated blackcurrant and notes of brambly fruit with a small hint of oak. Agreeable, pronounced acidity and fresh ripe tannins lead to good length with earthiness at the finish. M7 D7

Well-balanced in the mouth, the blend includes soft Aragonês, the body and length of Touriga Franca and the structure and concentration of the Touriga Nacional. Careful maturation in new Portuguese oak barrels makes this one of the richest wines among its peer group. M6 D6

VINHA DO MEIO QUEIJO, DOC DOURO, 2007 $22.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $134.00

A long-established favourite, this wine will not disappoint. A full-bodied, lively wine from the dramatic schistose terraces of the Douro, it is made from a picturesque mosaic of two of the best indigenous varieties. Ripe cherries, macerated cassis and cloves follow through to the palate with spice and structure and a wealth of blackberry fruit. Relatively young, its significant tannins will soften over time, adding further complexity to the lingering finish. It is a big wine for a great occasion. M7 D7

CHURCHILL ESTATES RESERVA, DOC DOURO, 2007 $36.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $221.00

An awesome wine, 2007 was a wonderful year for Johnny Graham. The combination of hard work with his dedicated team and a blockbusting vintage allowed him to release a Reserva Collection, a wine from his best fruit and finest vineyard. Tasted by Ken Christie who asked for an allocation for Opimian, it is all strawberry, mulberry and unmistakeably fresh earth, typical nuances from the best of the Douro. In the mouth, subtle oak with sumptuous, rich and velvety tannins lead to a spicy structure and ripe black fruit that packs power and strength. M6 D6

This statuesque wine shows why Portugal is so exciting a place for its rich, modern fruit-driven reds. The quality is immediately apparent on the nose with a flourish and bouquet of dried fruit aromas and the wild flowered shrubs of the remote Douro. On the palate it is equally intense with oak, cloves and dark cherry. Cinnamon and sweet liquorice with brambly fruit are in perfect harmony, smoothing the edges of the grainy tannins. OPIMIAN DRY WHITE PORT $37.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $222.00

A popular aperitif in the Douro Valley, it is vinified in the same way as red port wine, albeit with less maceration. Vastly underrated in the rest of the world, Churchill, Graham’s white port is simply delicious. Aged in oak, it has a light, amber colour with depth to its aromatic complexity. Flavours of honey and butterscotch marry the nectarine fruitiness and nutty character. Well-balanced with smooth, excellent acidity and a long finish, it is best drunk chilled. [05]

5386

OPIMIAN FINEST RESERVE PORT $34.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $207.00

A vintage character style blended port of great quality and complexity, this is a wonderful example of what can be achieved in non-vintage port when placed in the hands of a skilled winemaker. A huge wine, it is full-bodied with a deep ruby/garnet colour and a powerful black cherry and cedar nose. On the palate it reveals big berry fruit flavours and rich, spicy tannins. [07]

OPIMIAN CRUSTED PORT, BOTTLED 2005 $47.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $284.00

Crusted port affords the port blender the opportunity to make the best use of the varying characteristics of different vintages, offering the excitement of vintage port without the power. Bottled unfiltered and sealed with a driven cork, it is to be decanted before serving. This is a blend of high quality, full-bodied ports and though ready now, it will continue to improve in bottle, throwing sediment as it ages. Vibrant, it is full of red berries and balanced by bitter, dark chocolate. On the nose, the concentrated cherry fruit is spicy, elegant and powerful. Firmness and depth are met with excellent grip on the long, luscious finish. [07]

One of the finest of its genre, Tawny Port is made from a blend of many different components with younger, fruitdriven wines balancing older, richer wines that have complexity and sweetness from ageing in oak casks. CHURCHILL’S VINTAGE PORT 2007 « EN PRIMEUR » $90.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $545.00

2007 was an outstanding year in the Douro, prompting Churchill, Graham to declare their wine a “Vintage” year, the mark of the greatest excellence in port wine. The Port wine authorities limit the amount of vintage port that can be made, which in turn restricts the market to modest allocations. This offer provides Opimian members with the opportunity to “invest” in a wine that will mature and develop over two or more decades while bypassing the usual processes associated with “buying en primeur”. The wet winter, humid spring and cool August followed by an Indian summer contributed to the perfect ripeness of the grapes. The final selection of the best casks was made in the spring of 2009, before bottling this autumn. Still newborn with a long life ahead, it is opaque with a huge underlying intensity of pure fruit and the big tannic backbone of a powerful year. [07]

Concentrated, luscious fruit

6 BTLS/750 ML $166.00

The Saint-Véran vineyards lie across a small brook from those of Pouilly-Fuissé. Although the micro-climate is similar, the soil is quite different and is predominantly limestone mixed with degraded sandstone and granite. Stylistically, this represents a cross between Mâcon Blanc and PouillyFuissé. It has the floral quality of a Mâcon Blanc, but with greater body and extract as in the Pouilly-Fuissé. It is classic Mâconnais at its best with a dry, robust flavour and plenty of opulent, sweet fruit. Pale straw-gold with a greenish tinge, the aromas and flavours come together with persistence and a smooth, subtle, nutty flavour which gives the wine juicy mouth-filling appeal. [00] M7 D7

The preponderance of limestone in this region produces classy wines with great keeping potential. This is a wonderful example, surely on par with the greatest villages of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or. It has richness, steely mineral-nuanced elegance and powerful, complex characteristics. The chalk of the terroir makes a definite statement on the nose with indications of the white soil evident as an integrated part of the bouquet. CÔTE DE BROUILLY, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC, HAUTES SERRES, 2009 6 BTLS/750 ML $132.00

This example comes from one of the ten small village appellations, known as the “crus” of Beaujolais, which produce the finest wines. Here the vines are grown on the slopes of an ancient extinct volcano that gives this vineyard and its wines a completely different geological origin and soil from the other nine “crus”. Fruity and approachable, it has a strong aroma featuring blueberries and ripe, black elderberries with heightened pungent acidity and mineral notes. It has good length and potential for modest ageing. M6 D7

MOULIN À VENT, CUVÉE VIEILLES VIGNES, AOC, 2009 $25.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $154.00

Moulin à Vent is located high up on a hill and surrounds an ancient windmill. Like neighbouring Chénas the terroir, consisting of friable pink-granite sand, is ideal for the Gamay grape. The oldest “cru” of the Beaujolais area, it is a robust wine, the colour a deep ruby with a purple rim and the aroma a blend of soft fruit, violets and roses. With maturity, the nose will develop heady truffle and wild mushrooms. This wine combines the youthful charm of Beaujolais with the elegance of great Burgundy. M6 D7

BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC, MONT DE LA ROCHE, 2009 With such outstanding quality and at a price that is almost historical, the wine is fabulous. Ripe and rich, all the nuances of the Gamay grape leap about in the glass, throwing aromas of fresh fruit, zippy acidity and spice around the room and offering juicy, succulent flavours. With the typical purple colour of Gamay, it starts with soft, ripe damson fruits and ends with crisp acidity. Made for early consumption, the wine is an integration of elegance and softness with bold, ripe flavours. M7 D7

SOUTHERN BURGUNDY, FRANCE PAUL SAPIN SA

CAVE VINICOLE DE HUNAWIHR Alsace The quality of Alsace is dominated by three villages, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and Hunawihr, which lie in the centre of the region creating a triangle, with Hunawihr at its southern point. The vineyards are owned by close to 500 small, family wine growers forming the co-operative with which Opimian has worked closely for many years. During this time, Alsace has become much more popular while the wines offered have been greatly improved by technological advances in both the vineyard and winery. With this offering, Dominique Soller, Hunawihr’s Director, introduces a new range of wines under the Cuvée Prestige label, designed to show off the best of Alsace expressed through the skilled handling by the Hunawihr winemakers. Designed with Opimian members in mind, each wine has been chosen from the top cuvées of each varietal.

CRÉMANT D’ALSACE, CALIXTE BRUT, AOC ALSACE CRÉMANT, NV $27.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $167.00

Over many years we have consistently claimed this to be one of the finest of sparkling wines. It remains so, indeed for many it is superior to Champagne. With a grapey perfume and powerful notes from the second fermentation, it has an attractive, constant small mousse of fine bubbles that brings lively and fresh flavours to the palate where crushed apples mingle with yeasty notes and a hint of vanilla. [02] M8 D9

5406

CRÉMANT, BLANC DE NOIRS, CALIXTE, AOC ALSACE CRÉMANT, NV $30.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $183.00

A new wine introduced for the first time in this cellar offering, it is made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, gently pressed and immediately separated from their skins so that no colour taints the light silver tones. The wine has rather more gravity and stature than the other Calixte label, which is a blend of white grapes. With a firm and distinctive nose, the structure transfers to the palate where tannin makes the flavours lean and penetrating. Grapes from the best vineyards and of the highest quality are used for this label ensuring that it will mature and develop its clean flavours. [02] M8 D9

SYLVANER, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $21.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $128.00

Rich in the mouth, the bouquet shows lean minerality that expands as the wine fills the palate where fine fruit balance and a persistent thread of lime-accented acidity emerge. Fresh with upfront fruit, it shows strawberry notes and white pepper spice. Fuller flavoured than is usual for the variety, it is a well-priced example of the grape associated with its excellent vintage. The perfect wine to serve as an aperitif, it will be memorable for the acidity which leaves the palate clean and refreshed. [00] M6 D7

5408

6 BTLS/750 ML $137.00

A delightful platter of ripe orchard fruit fills the glass with an orchestrated aroma. Plums and peaches create the platform on which apples and nectarines play their part. Not quite dry, the very small level of residual grape sugar is swallowed up in the overall picture. Generous fruit in the mouth with well-balanced components give sufficient weight for the flavours to persist long after the glass has been emptied. [01] M6 D6

RIESLING, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $23.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $141.00

Partly overlooked in the rush for the newly chic varietals such as Viognier and Pinot Grigio, the Riesling is surely one of the world’s most prominent vines. It produces classic wines with interest and dominant personalities wherever it is cultivated, but nowhere are its wines more impressive than in Alsace. This is perfectly poised and powerful, the light golden colour attracting the eye and preceding the penetrating bouquet, which mixes grape vinosity with stone fruit. A wine that is awash with interesting notes, the emphasis is on the crisp mouth-feel. [01] M6 D7

5410

MUSCAT, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $27.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $165.00

Far from offering the sweetness that is indicated by its name, the Muscat of Alsace is a dry wine, showing no similarities to other Muscats. It has a powerfully perfumed bouquet that is full and opulent, a mixture of apricots and lychees with a hint of the dried fruit of Christmas cake. In the mouth, all the flavours are balanced with plenty of fruit mixing in a combination of developed grape flavours balanced by a crystal clear note of lemony acidity. This is a fine wine, complex and balanced, with a clean finish. [00] M7 D8

PINOT GRIS, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $28.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $173.00

Bordering on the weight of a late harvest wine, this is stunning, a rich, ripe, full-bodied beauty with baskets of fruit that fill the glass with extract and a considerable level of complexity. Perfumes of lemon mix with peach, Bartlett pear, quince and mulberry. While at the entry level to the palate it is fat and opulent, it maintains balance with a good level of acidity that lengthens the finish. [03] M5 D6

There is truly no Gewürztraminer in the world that comes close to that of Alsace for its wide popularity. The basket of wild fruit is filled to overflowing, the tropical experience in the nose and palate are unique. This is Alsace at its quintessential best and most versatile. It is a wine that is as likely to be adored as it is to be rejected, but if apricot, peach, nectarine and soft berry in a mix with spiciness and a soft, easy approach are your preference, look no further. PINOT NOIR, CUVÉE PRESTIGE, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $29.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $175.00

This is a grape that is always hard to grow and produce good wine. Even in Burgundy, its heartland growers are frequently disappointed by their efforts, but in Alsace, with its solidly dependable continental climate, it is unfailingly reliable. Fermented in old oak vats to ensure that no wood flavours disturb the purity of the grape, it is a pale red, the thin-skinned Pinot Noir only producing moderate depth of colour. Its ethereal and mystic perfume never fails to impress as it makes the soft and understated bridge between the grape and the glass. Medium light in weight, it has a balanced structure beautifully harmonizing the extract, tannins and refined acidity. M6 D6

PINOT BLANC, AOC ALSACE, 2008, MÉDAILLE D’OR COLMAR $23.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $140.00

After harvesting, the grapes were brought to the winery where they were fermented in stainless steel and bottled early without malolactic fermentation. It is a versatile wine with good complexity, suitable for any occasion. The blend of two varieties, the Pinot Blanc is dry, acidic and adds freshness and backbone to the blend while the Auxerrois contributes juicy, ripe fruit and body. With a firm structure, it shows lemony fruit, breadth and a mineral back-bone with elegant poise and balance. [00] M6 D6

RIESLING, AOC ALSACE, 2008, MÉDAILLE D’OR COLMAR $25.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $151.00

One of the world’s classic vines, Riesling is found from Australia to the most northerly vineyards of the world. In many locations it produces a typical “kerosene” nose, but in Alsace, where it is unfailingly clean, it illustrates the pure fruit that winemakers seek. On the nose, crushed pineapple blends with citrus notes, then a supple mouth-feel, with spicy flavours of apricot and vanilla bean, is edged by minerals and acidity. Refined and complex, it ends with superb length. [01] M6 D7

5416

GEWÜRZTRAMINER, AOC ALSACE, 2008, MÉDAILLE D’OR COLMAR $32.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $193.00

This wine displays brilliant aromatics, but the peaches and apricots that come with maturity have still to develop. Light lemon-coloured, the nose is floral, pure and fresh with grapey notes and mineral nuances. All but dry, it has a fat, rich mouth-feel that showcases crisp acidity, light citrus and lychee flavours and the full body. Although it is young, it has a gorgeous mouth-filling texture leading into a lifted, soft spice finish. [03] M6 D7

5417

PINOT GRIS, LIEU-DIT MUEHLFORST, AOC ALSACE, 2008 $30.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $183.00

Showing fantastic class and penetration, the fruit comes from the single vineyard of the Muehlforst, a site virtually exclusive to members of the Hunawihr co-operative. Full ripeness is practically guaranteed as the south-easterly facing vineyard slope provides long sunlight hours without excessively high temperatures, perfect conditions for a progressive and long ripening period. Already golden in the glass, it has fine perfumes of heather honey, peach and a hint of mandarins. Superb acidity gives it lightness and energy to balance the modest level of residual sugar. [04] M6 D6

5418

PINOT GRIS, AOC ALSACE VENDANGES TARDIVES, 2007 $54.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $328.00

It takes a great summer to raise the sugar levels to those required to make a fine late harvest and a long Indian summer to secure the efforts of the vignerons. The best bunches are left to hang and ripen on the vines for at least four weeks after the normal picking. Then, keeping blackbirds and thrushes away with nets, the grape bunches dehydrate and as the water content declines, the sugar and acidity continue to rise. Rare and refined, this is the Alsatian equivalent to the Beerenauslese of the Rhineland. Gloriously rich, never cloying and with perfect balance and harmony in the mouth, this is a wine for joyful sipping and quiet appreciation of the winemaker’s artistry. [07] M5 D7
