CELLAR OFFERING 191

The fine wines of South Africa and Australia Reflecting the growth in the rising popularity of the wines of Australia and those of South Africa’s Cape Province, Opimian has concentrated this cellar offering on the wines of these countries, moving other southern hemisphere wines to our Special Offering. Growth in the demand for Australian and South African wines shows no sign of diminution and in many countries they are more popular than those of France. With each passing year, South Africa is making better wines and although it is classified as a “new world” area, the wines can be considered to be in between the new and old world styles. But, how the infants of “down under” have grown! The steady and stable climates of the southern continents, allied to the advantages of water control through irrigation, ensure that year after year the vintages produce perfectly ripened fruit, the material that well-trained, innovative winemakers use to encapsulate the typical characteristics of their varieties and terroirs.

Voor Paardeberg (Horse Mountain)

Wines of the “Fairest Cape” Sir Francis Drake, AD 1580

South Africa enjoys incredibly varied terroirs across the whole of the Western Cape Winelands, from the moist humidity of the Constantia hillside vineyards to the arid semi-desert of the Karoo. All the regions promote their individuality which we attempt to reflect in this eclectic selection from five of the most important quality areas.

After a catastrophic earthquake in 1969, the entire village of Tulbagh, its centuries-old homesteads, its vineyards and the infrastructure had to be rebuilt. The terrible events which took place under the high mountains are now a distant memory with the wineries restored and prospering. Theuniskraal, a legendary estate, has passed through the Jordaan family for four generations, with each of the children joining the team at an early age. Andries Jordaan named his Sauvignon Blanc after the lovely, indigenous Ixia flower. Straw green, gooseberry, redcurrant and lemon aromas are full and assertive on the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied, the lively acidity is intertwined with crisp fruit, the finish is long. [01] M9 D9

THEUNISKRAAL PRESTIGE, 2008 $22.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $137.00

This clever blend was the first red wine ever produced by this winery. The wine is dominated by the obvious juiciness of the Ruby Cabernet with its distinctive fruit and low tannins adjusted to perfection by the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The result is soft and fruit-laden with sweet-smelling, tasty berry notes and fine balance. Tulbagh has one of the coldest climates in South Africa, which completely shuts down the vines in winter. Although, watching the teams of pickers driving out to the vines in a train of carts during the hot summer nights, the intense cold of winter seems far away. M8 D8

QUAGGA RIDGE SAUVIGNON BLANC/SEMILLON, 2009, WESTERN CAPE $22.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $135.00

Underneath the huge granite outcrop that towers above the township, it took its name from the glistening, pearly sheen after rainfall. The owner, Craig Lardner, whose every wine was commended by the IWSC, is very much an innovator and one of the first Cape growers to embrace screwtops. Pale straw in colour, the intense aroma captures pineapple, passion fruit and fragrant notes of white flowers. The palate is refined with crisp grapefruit flavours with soft fruit and subtle green herbs following the nose; a complex wine with refreshing citrus acidity. [00] M8 D8

The buzzing alcohol propels the wine to a high level of intensity where a concentrated, red cherry colour opens the door to blackcurrants infused with dark chocolate and vanilla with small additions of cedar and smoke. The palate has a rich, full-bodied and spicy texture, but it still shows qualities that will grow as the wine reaches maturity. The ripe fruit concentration mingles with tannins that add masses of spicy piquancy and interest that creates generosity, supple, flavours and suave mouth-feel. M7 D7

Stellekaya owners, Jane and Dave Lello, took their time before releasing their first vintage, but once their wines were finally out, there was no looking back. The name of the winery means “Home of the Stars” and it is entirely appropriate as the wines are superb! Made by Ntsiki Biyela, voted South Africa’s Woman Winemaker of the Year 2009, she is clearly at the top of her game. This wine, inspired by the brightest star in the constellation, Crux, is a barrel-aged blend of Merlot, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is filled with red fruit and is as bright and clear as its inspiration. M6 D7

CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2008 $30.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $183.00

Over the thirteen years that Bernhard Vellar has been owner and winemaker, there have been moments of crisis and gloom, particularly some years ago when the vines were infected by the leaf roller virus which could only be overcome by re-planting. Fortunately, that is now in the past and the reds are back to their remarkable quality. This is quintessentially a cool climate wine, closer to Bordeaux than it is to Barossa. Elegant, it shows a whole range of balanced, integrated characteristics; it is clearly a wine of excellent quality and one that shows the great depth of the Cape country’s wine styles. M6 D6

JACQUES FOURIE, CLOVELLY WINES Stellenbosch A rather homespun character, Jacques is known to many and is the fountain of all knowledge for things relating to the people and production of wines in the Western Cape. Together with his wife, Mineke, they have created a beautiful wine estate on the hills of Devonvale just outside Stellenbosch, the spiritual centre of South Africa’s vineyards.

THE ROSÉ, 2009, DEVONVALE $21.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $128.00

Jacques introduced us to his rosé a couple of years ago and with the growth in the popularity of blushing pink wine we have been entirely persuaded. The grapes from Jacques’ Clovelly Estate vineyard were de-stemmed to restrain tannins and produce a supple palate before crushing and fermentation at controlled low temperatures. It has a modern, fruit-driven style with masses of mineral-edged fruit and an utterly light body. Starting with a seductive and delicate pink colour it goes on to an elegant nose of red fruits and pears with a note of brioche on the palate. Energetic and elegant with good balance in the mouth. THE BERRY, 2008, DEVONVALE $22.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $132.00

The name says it all; this is a beautiful mass of fruit-filled nuances, cassis mixed with a hint of earth and warming fruit. The sappy spice that swirls round the mouth, fills the nose with the vigour of freshly crushed blackberry and acerbic boysenberry. Jacques has ripened his fruit, crushed it, filtered out the fruit pulp and run it into bottles. As friendly as a red wine can be, it seems to have just come from the winery, appealing to be opened and enjoyed immediately. Entirely undemanding, it is a great wine for anytime and every day. M8 D8

5220

CLOVELLY CHARDONNAY, 2009, STELLENBOSCH $24.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $149.00

The estate sits on a north-facing slope with a range of different soils that allows Jacques to be site-specific in the management of his vines. His Chardonnay, reaching perfect maturity early, is blended with wine from one of the best plots in Robertson, where higher temperatures with low rainfall concentrate and add power to the fruit. The style is reminiscent of the rich wines of Sonoma, but, at this price, few can come close for the sheer opulence and vibrancy of the fruit. It floods the bouquet with rich peach aromas, pineapple, butterscotch and light oak. Developing in the mouth, it has good weight and ends with an intense grip of spice on the palate. [00] M7 D7

PATINA SYRAH, 2005, STELLENBOSCH $61.00

3 BTLS/750 ML $183.00

The Patina Syrah is one of those massive wines that makes one ponder whether they should be sipped, quaffed or gifted as a legacy. The colour is colossal, dark, brooding, rich purple, completely opaque in the centre. It is huge in the glass from which sweet fruit, laced with tar, chocolate and pine, pours out to fill the room with heady perfume. Cassis and currant feature with meaty, leathery and coffee flavours predominating while the palate is filled with rich blackcurrant and dark chocolate tones. Full-bodied, a solid wedge of tannin gives a firm structure that follows through on the aftertaste. M6 D7

8

Grape Variety

6 BTLS/750 ML $185.00

When Jacques’ family purchased the estate there was a solid belt of eucalyptus along the northern boundary that cast a long shadow and seriously reduced sunshine exposure. This led to the wines having a green, acidic flavour. The trees have since gone, leaving a legacy of residue that carries into the glass with a delightful hint of pine and smoke with an herbal element. Flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry and herbs are fine, elegant and juicy. There’s a smidgen of vanillin in the mid-palate, although the brambly, blackcurrant flavours demand all the attention. Wellrounded, mint, soft tannins and toasty vanilla also make their contribution. M7 D7

CHAPMAN GROVE CHARDONNAY, 2007, MARGARET RIVER $30.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $182.00

Light lemon yellow, clear and bright, the nose shows the grace and harmony of fruit and hazelnuts with a youthful vigour that defines its elegant balance. The primary impressions partner citric acidity with fruit flavours that are both plump and fresh. Every melodic note is followed by another, forming a finely textured orchestration. Deep, powerful and rich, it builds volume in the mouth; all the notes fit together in harmony and carry the flavour through to a lengthy finish. [00] M8 D8

Merlot was the first grape that shone the international spotlight on the potential of the region and though other varietals have become equally successful, this is still home to fine Merlot. The dark fruits and spicy, subtle oak aromas create a perfect entrée to this classic varietal with distinctive Margaret River style. It has spicy herb and vanilla overtones which give way to strong black fruit on the palate, underlined by dark chocolate. Round, generous tannins add to the big finish. M7 D7

DREAMING DOG SHIRAZ, 2007, MARGARET RIVER $24.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $148.00

These wines are a tribute to Maggie, Big Sam and Bollie who supervised the vineyard over the years; a procession of white dogs who left their mark in the vineyard and on its owners, the Fraser family. The wines are superb and affordable, with no effort spared to create easy style and attractive balance. This Shiraz, partially aged in French oak, is fruit-forward and concentrated, reflecting the complexity that is typical of the cool climate of the Margaret River. Deeply coloured in the glass, the nose is densely packed with blueberry and plums touched by notes of peppery spice. The wine is medium-bodied with an attractive, juicy texture that is nicely rounded as it leaves the mouth buzzing with silken tannins. M7 D8

SONGLINES ESTATES Milsons Point, New South Wales Ken Christie and Pierre Chanzonkov, Opimian General Manager, spent a week with the partners in Songlines Estates learning of the mystical abilities of Australia’s Aboriginal people who pilot their way across their unforgiving country by following the traditional pathways known as “songlines”. Songlines wines are named to respect these ancient mysteries insisting on an uncompromising selection of fruit from the greatest vineyards. This ensures that only perfect grapes reach the winery where, Australian legendary winemaker, John Duval joins David Fatches to work their art producing small batches of impeccable wines.

About the Cover by Martin Krajewski: Barramundi Hunting This painting illustrates the muddy waters in the river system swollen after the wet season when the barramundi swim from the billabongs to the river ways. It displays five barramundi travelling across the creeks and rivers and tells of the Aboriginal men, the hunters and gatherers, collecting goose eggs and bush tucker. The footprints are their pathways. The circles depict the men and women sitting separately in the traditional way whilst the ‘blue dot bubbles’ between the many painted circles are ‘Songlines’ or ancient tracks that act as maps and guide the Aboriginal people across the land. Colin Jones, ‘KO-Or’ in his native language, is the artist of this painting. He was born of Aboriginal grandparents and his heritage belongs to the Kalkadoon and Nunuckle (West and Southern Queensland) tribal groups. Most of his childhood was spent with his Aboriginal grandfather, learning traditional practices that had been handed down for countless generations. Now an acclaimed Aboriginal historian and artist he writes: “All Aboriginal Art, ancient or contemporary, conveys a story and provides a record of our history, documenting events and human experiences with the earth, our Mother. It carries our culture for future generations and tells of how to look after the land, hunting and gathering, our creation, the Dreamtime stories and of our ceremonial and spiritual traditions. Learning to read our Art is like reading a book that provides a greater insight and understanding of the oldest living culture on earth.” We took ‘Songlines’ as the name for our exceptional wines as the concept perfectly encapsulates the importance of the land and the passionate men who work it and walk upon it and the knowledge gathered over countless time in both the Old and New wine worlds.

BYLINES SEMILLON, 2009, HUNTER VALLEY $36.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $221.00

Ken Christie’s notes read, “One of the most perfectly structured Semillons I have ever tasted, low in alcohol but bold in structure”. The grapes were hand-picked at a miserable two tons per acre from 20 year old Hunter Valley vines, an area long famous for a varietal that shows the clean mineral flavours and lemon-lime citrus that defines the Hunter. Finely balanced, it has subtle persistence and length that offers crisp, refreshing notes now, but provides the elements that will allow development over two or more decades. [01] M6 D7

5229

BYLINES CHARDONNAY, 2008, HUNTER VALLEY $39.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $237.00

Offering the typical concentration of a minute yield from 30 year old Hunter Valley vines, there is no sign of over-stated cedar or smoke from excessive oak treatment. All the elements show the perfect freshness that comes from careful handling throughout the picking to the bottling stages. The result offers a generous, rounded framework with ripe fruit scored by the understated oak complexity of cask ageing, with stirring of the fine lees strengthening the structure. [01] M6 D7

5230

BYLINES SHIRAZ, 2006, MCLAREN VALE $45.17

6 BTLS/750 ML $271.00

Made from selected batches of the best fruit from McLaren Vale, it is easy and delicious, a red wine for anytime, even anytime soon! It is generosity set in a concentrated inky colour. The fruit lies alongside fine spice and shows its youthfulness with a dash of juicy plum fruit together with sumptuous, dark Morella cherries. Blackberry, coffee and balancing cedar oak complete the profile. Plentiful tannin adds weight giving it both volume and flesh. M5 D7

BYLINES PINOT NOIR, 2008, TASMANIA $45.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $270.00

It is appropriate that the ancient Songlines led us to this fine, cool climate Pinot Noir, our first wine from Tasmania. This wine is grown south of Hobart on low hills influenced by gentle sunshine and mild maritime breezes off the southern ocean. David Fatches pursued his ideal of allowing the fruit to quietly unfurl by using carbonic maceration alongside careful use of oak to enhance and lift the characteristics. The result is a wine driven by its varietal fruit, showing plum, cherry, spice and a subtle infusion of earthy forest leaves. M6 D7

LEYLINES SHIRAZ, 2007, MCLAREN VALE $26.00

12 BTLS/750 ML $312.00

This superb Shiraz is connected by a familial line that leads to the flagship Songlines Estates Shiraz. It is vibrant, young and already approachable with an attractive, fruity aroma showing plums, flowers, red berries, cloves and vanilla. On the palate soft tannins give succulence to flavours that suggest mulberry, cassis, leather and dry leaves. It is fermented and matured with the same loving care lavished on the Songlines wine, but David Fatches makes it more approachable by using older oak barrels for maturation which softens the palate and leaves a lower level of oak dominance with easy fruit. This is a John Duval masterpiece, deep garnet in colour exuding a complex and intense nose with white pepper, mint and dark notes of earth alongside rich plums, sage and thyme. John, winemaker of Penfolds’ iconic Grange for many years, has made this wine with concentrated berry fruit and Christmas cake complexity. It is sensational! HASTWELL & LIGHTFOOT McLaren Vale What started 22 years ago as a partnership between old friends Mark and Wendy Hastwell and Martin and Jill Lightfoot, has the added responsibility of a 35 acre vineyard. Basing their future on the observation, "there has got to be something better to do than work in an office”, the partners purchased land on the northern slopes of McLaren Vale which was ploughed, then planted with the aid of Australia’s premier viticulture advisor, Geoff Hardy. By November 1988, what had been a bare paddock had become a 13 acre trellised and irrigated vineyard. Today, the partners’ wines are among the richest, most concentrated and complex wines of Australia.

McLaren Vale does this grape as well as anywhere. With the best of the complex characteristics showing to perfection in the glass, it has typical smoothness on the palate and a touch of glycerine in the mouth adding softness that perfectly complements the acidity. 6 BTLS/750 ML $180.00

In translation Tempranillo means “early ripened”, therefore, it is not shocking that in McLaren Vale it achieves perfection. The mature fruit delivers deep colour, fruit sugar and tannin in perfect harmony. Though the grape can lack “backbone”, the use of small casks for maturation adjusted the tannins to give good potential for ageing. Bright garnet with purple hues, the nose has attractive aromas with wild briars, fresh strawberry and hints of spice. Rounded and soft, it is wellbalanced with a powerful structure. M7 D7

Vibrant, typical aromas of blackcurrants, ripe briary fruits and vanilla are entwined with hints of spicy, toasty oak. 6 BTLS/750 ML $188.00

The Hastwell & Lightfoot vines produce a small crop of fine fruit that is well concentrated; indeed this is “perfectly Shiraz” with the bouquet offering typical English saddle leather notes, lavender and violets. In the mouth the abundant soft tannins marry with perfect acidity to keep it bright, showing its energy in a pudding of black fruits, cedar and warm, damp earth. Powerful and with a dense mouth-feel, it will age well. M7 D8

WHITE TRIO, 2009, HUNTER VALLEY & ORANGE $25.00

6 BTLS/750 ML $150.00

Using three very different, but distinctive varieties it is hardly surprising that this wine offers a wealth of interest and personality. The fruit is grown on two sites with Verdelho and Semillon grown on the warm valley floor while the Sauvignon Blanc comes from a cool vineyard, 800 metres up Mount Canobolas. The grapes were pressed separately then cold settled before fermentation followed by blending of the three varieties prior to bottling. The nose is aromatic and fresh, perfumed by tropical fruit with vigorous and zesty apple-accented acid. [01] M7 D8

5240

RED TRIO, 2008, HUNTER VALLEY & COONAWARRA $25.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $153.00

Comprised of the region’s major red grapes, both the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are grown on Hunter Valley red clay over limestone while the Shiraz comes from the cooler Wrattonbully region of South Australia. Winemaker, Mark Woods controls the vigour of his vines to increase concentration and flavour. In the glass, the components are fruit-driven showing finely layered cassis, blackberry and plums with a warming spice note from use of two and three year old oak barrels. Supple and easy, it needs no further maturation to deliver an exciting basket of soft characteristics. M8 D8

5241

ROCKPILE CHARDONNAY, 2008, HUNTER VALLEY $28.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $173.00

The vines were planted in free draining, gravely loam in 1972 and since then the vineyard has consistently produced a low yield of outstanding quality. The wine has great concentration and structure offering forward tropical fruit aromas with fine balance and concentration. After pressing, most of the juice was fermented and matured for four months in small oak barrels. The balance was produced in steel tanks which helped to preserve the fresh flavours and acidity before the two lots were blended, cold stabilized and bottled. [00] M7 D8

Briar Ridge sources the fruit from a grower in the village of Nulkaba, at the eastern end of the Hunter where the valley floor flattens and the higher temperatures perfectly suit the heat loving Shiraz. Deep red with a youthful purple hue, it has a spiced, complex nose with lifted aromas of raspberries which complement the flavour that is loaded with black plum, red berry fruits and spice. Soft and fleshy with supple tannins and a long finish, it is a delicious Shiraz ideal for every day enjoyment. M8 D8

OLD VINES SHIRAZ, 2008, HUNTER VALLEY $30.50

6 BTLS/750 ML $183.00

It is documented and widely recognized that fully mature vines produce the most intensely flavoured fruit; that certainly pertains to this Shiraz which comes from a vineyard with a minimum of 35 years of age. The vines are strategically placed in rich, red loam soils where plant vigour reduction is a constant activity along with irrigation restriction and leaf removal throughout the growing season. The colour is a deeply pigmented purple, the bouquet, powerful and fragrant, built on intense berry fruit, mint, a whiff of leather and a hint of smoke. On the palate, concentrated berry fruit and spice are integrated with earthy, aromatic, dried herbs and soft tannins that give excellent structure and length. M6 D7

The grapes were crushed, chilled and then cold soaked on the skins for 72 hours during which time enzymatic change hastened colour and aromatics extraction. The fruit flavours carry over to the palate which is full and intense with a rich mouth-feel. Integration of the fruit with oak nuances has developed perfectly with buzzing, palate-gripping tannins on the finish. M7 D7

This “big bully” is a muscular monster with the finesse of a gentle giant. The fruit comes from Wrattonbully, the region bordering Victoria and South Australia, where the same red clay loam as Coonawarra’s Terra Rossa produces outstanding Cabernet. The vines are planted on high dunes where individual blocks are given separate canopy management, cropping structure and moisture control according to soil depth which can vary from a few centimetres to over one metre. With a deep, inky colour the bouquet is robust revealing plum, red fruit jam and bay leaves. Powerful in the mouth, the full-bodied structure includes sweet tannins and ends with a long, spicy, liquorice finish. M6 D7

BLACK SPRINGS VINEYARD, VERDELHO, 2009, CENTRAL RANGES $24.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $149.00

Originally from Madeira, where it produced the island’s famous fortified wine, the grape has adapted well in the Hunter Valley. This region, as famous for whites as its pivotal reds, yields robust wines in the characteristic, red loam soil. Harvesting by machine in the cool of night preserved the freshness of the grapes prior to cool, slow fermentation which retained clean fruit aromas and flavours. It is fresh, sappy and packed with fragrant orange blossom, kiwi fruit, melon aromas, ripe citrus and pineapple flavours. [01] M8 D8

BLACK SPRINGS VINEYARD, VIOGNIER, 2009, HUNTER VALLEY $24.83

6 BTLS/750 ML $149.00

The vintage enjoyed excellent spring rains which filled the water catchments and lifted ground water levels allowing the vines to start early, develop foliage and carry a full crop of fruit. To retain freshness it was matured on the lees and regularly stirred to increase complexity and creaminess for maximum varietal flavour and balance. It has a fine colour with delicate aromas of apricots, green melon and floras which are typical of fine Viognier. The palate shows apricot and orange blossom with a luscious finish supported by good acidity. [01] M8 D8

This cool climate Shiraz expresses the style and great elements of the Hunter region. The fruit, from Neil’s eight acre vineyard, came from small distinctive parcels blended before fermentation to help enrich the complexity of the finished wine. Difficult, cool and humid vintage conditions contributed to a bouquet showing spice and herbaceousness with the solid entry offering brambly fruit, plump black berries and prevalent, but not excessive, oak. It has a solid tannic structure and tight acidity adding length and complexity built from pepper and spices, then pulled together by smart oak. M6 D7

An interesting blend of two exciting grapes picked and combined in the vineyard then co-fermented to produce a new and exciting style. By blending in the white Viognier, the colour is enhanced, but the greater effects are found in the nose and palate which is fruity, dry and filled with blackcurrants and the steady buzz of wood tannins. Viognier gives the palate a marked “lift”, lengthening the flavour and softening the assault of the tannin. The wine has great depth and complexity with a long and persistent flavour. M8 D8

6 BTLS/750 ML $162.00

An unusual blend of Australia’s three major classics has produced easy drinking, generous qualities that begin with the dark red colour and herbaceous aroma. The nose develops in the glass with an initial lift of smoky cedar nuances that confirm a period of subtle oak maturation prior to bottling. The time in wood has allowed the best elements of the three grapes to fit harmoniously; the spicy bite and flesh of the Shiraz, red fruit and leafy notes contributed by the Merlot and red berries and a cordial of cassis coming to the party from the Cabernet. Easy tannin provides a well-fleshed skeleton that brings everything together. M7 D7

MILYAROO CHARDONNAY, 2009, RIVERINA $17.58

12 BTLS/750 ML $211.00

Dependent upon irrigation from the Murrumbidgee River, the Riverina’s seventeen inches of annual rainfall are insufficient to produce crops without the aid of watering. This allows growers to control vigour and vine vegetation ensuring that the fruit is both healthy and perfectly ripe. The excellent quality of this wine, combined with its low cost, make a winning combination. The nose shows sweet melon and citrus with peach, lively acidity and great balance that lingers in the mouth through to the refreshing finish. [00] M8 D8

This style of wine is hugely popular; it is a fruit bomb without complexity. SPARKLING SALMON, HAND CRAFTED BY GEOFF HARDY, NV, SOUTH AUSTRALIA $29.67

6 BTLS/750 ML $178.00

Geoff used a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as in Champagne, to create his recently developed pink sparkler. The grapes come from Geoff’s own vineyards on the Adelaide Hills and the Limestone Coast where, after pressing and blending, they are fermented into a delicate base wine prior to the second fermentation which produces a persistently fine mousse, the “Fizz”. Before bottling, the sweetness was adjusted resulting in a crisp, light, strawberry and red apple flavoured bubbly. The perfect wine to celebrate the summer, there is no lack of flavour interest to provide a showcase for the blend of the two varieties. [03] M8 D8

K1 BY GEOFF HARDY ARNEIS, 2009, ADELAIDE HILLS $32.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $194.00

Until Hardy’s recent vineyard plantings, the unusual Arneis vine had declined to such a degree that it had practically died out. In Italy’s Piedmont regional dialect it means “little rascal” befitting its characteristics because of its low yield and notorious difficulty during cultivation; its great virtue is found in the delightful fragrance of its wines. This was ample reason for Geoff, the most highly regarded vine specialist in Australia, to persevere. The white peaches nose is augmented by the perfume of white flowers and freshly shelled almonds. The palate, unusual for the variety, has fine acidity, inherited from the coolness of the Adelaide Hills, excellent body and subtle mineral/flint nuances. [01] M7 D8

6 BTLS/750 ML $170.00

The fruit for this delicious white was selected from Geoff’s K1 vineyard. He used the best parcels to make a fruit-driven wine with excellent balance which can be enjoyed without years of cellaring and offers excellent quality and consistency. Bright silver-lemon colour with ripe melons and stone fruit aromas, the palate has a creamy texture and mouth-feel from its time on lees and partial malolactic fermentation. Fresh, crisp and medium-bodied, it shows delicious, rich fruit and good balance with added interest from the inclusion of the Viognier. [01] M8 D8

Delightful wine, currently tough finish

6 BTLS/750 ML $176.00

The Cabernet provides much of the backbone, the austerity, the persistence and the acidity for this beautiful blend, while the high proportion of Spain’s classic varietal, Tempranillo, adds masses of spice, succulent red fruits, black pepper, liquorice and warmth. To retain close control of the whole winemaking process, Geoff fermented the grapes in small tanks, regularly punching down the skins and pulp to ensure complete flavour extraction. Rest and maturation for a year in small French barrels allowed for the developments of dark chocolate and vanilla notes. Firm and tannic, it will benefit from another year in the cellar. K1 BY GEOFF HARDY SHIRAZ, 2008, ADELAIDE HILLS $34.33

6 BTLS/750 ML $206.00

Looking at the colour and thickness of the concentration there can be no doubt about the vigour of the Shiraz at Kuitpo. This is a huge wine; the colour, the bouquet, the flavours. It begins with the attractive plum purple colour, then its spicy nose redolent with red berry and black cherry fruit. The palate is full-bodied and soft with light, gripping, smooth tannins provided by oak ageing. Packed with crunchy blackberry and cassis flavours, it slowly unveils a well-integrated, rounded structure smoothed over with the gentle touch of vanilla. M6 D7

Ken Christie writes, “I tasted, then drank, this wine last night. It is one of the biggest wines I have ever seen in a glass, almost too rich for anything but sipping; but then my second thought was I mustn’t knock over the glass. The colour will wreck the furniture!” It pours from a special bottle, heavy and crafted to look huge, the wine almost glutinously slipping into the glass. The nose is massive, packed with every conceivable berry from the hedgerows, all of them full and ripe. On the palate, a solid wedge of tannin coats the tongue, but all that fruit will not be denied and oozes sweetly across the mouth. Can more be written because words are hardly adequate? This Amaronestyle wine must be experienced. M6 D7

12 BTLS/750 ML $236.00

The GMH Vineyard Series wines are perfectly crafted offering fine quality and varietal intensity at reasonable prices. This Verdelho comes from Langhorne Creek on the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, home to Hardy’s 150 year-old Angas Vineyard. The grapes were hand-harvested, chilled then slowly fermented at low temperatures producing and retaining a fresh, zippy aroma packed with fragrant orange blossom, kiwi fruit, mango and melon in addition to the rich and lively ripe citrus and pineapple flavours. Its crisp features suggest it should be enjoyed in its youth. [01] M8 D9

12 BTLS/750 ML $236.00

The popularity of Viognier continues to build; it is hardly a surprise when the wines offer so many attractive facets of perfume and flavour. The bouquet is pungent and aromatic with notes of orange blossom, honey and peach. In the mouth, the richness and creaminess take time to develop from the luscious texture at the entry through stone fruits with notes of mandarin and marzipan. Apricot and orange blossom complement good acidity and a clean finish. [01] M7 D7

Geoff Hardy’s wine comes from the Mount Lofty Ranges and is based on Cabernet Sauvignon although the term Meritage can include any combination of Bordeaux varietals agreed to in 1988 by a group of US based vintners. Lively and attractive, the colour is a solidly compact deep red with the powerful aroma of ripe strawberries, blackcurrants and cherries. Filling the palate with soft fruit flavours, it is emphatically cassis but is enhanced by bell pepper leaves, rose petals and tea with a pungent dash of spice and the buzz of alcohol. It has developed nicely with rounded characteristics and plenty of robust wood tannin that slips away with pleasing volume into a long finish. M6 D7

The fascinating return of an almost forgotten grape

12 BTLS/750 ML $243.00

This almost forgotten Bordeaux classic is showing signs of a come-back, but like Carmenere, it needs full sunshine exposure over a long period to completely ripen the fruit and soften aggressive acidity. Sourced from Hardy’s estate, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and cold soaked for four days. Fermentation was on the skins in open top tanks before pressing into one year old French oak for 18 months. The nose is rammed full of blackcurrants, violets, cinnamon and black olives with red berry fruits enveloping the entire front palate. Fine-grained tannins build across the wine to ensure cellaring will be rewarded. M6 D6
