Fiscal Year 2022 was extraordinary for Opera Colorado, as we all experienced the return to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House after a twentytwo-month shut-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was thrilling to soak in the uproarious applause as we took the stage for opening night of Tosca on November 6, 2021.

Along with the excitement of returning to the stage came the challenges of navigating a season impacted by continuing COVID-19 concerns. Our top priority was the safety of our artists, chorus, orchestra, patrons, production personnel, and volunteers.

We saw artistic triumphs throughout the season, beginning with Tosca and its incredible cast, featuring Melissa Citro, Rafael Davila, and Luis Ledesma. Moravec and Campbell’s The Shining, based on the novel by Stephen King, was the largest production ever mounted on the stage of the Ellie, and brought in a record number of new audience members. A passionate and electrifying Carmen was the perfect finale to our return to stage.

Our education programs returned to the opera house and community, including in-school workshops, our Student Matinee, and more. A tremendously talented group of Artists in Residence delivered high-quality opera experiences to all ages throughout the state, including a brand-new production of The Pirates of Penzance as part of our Opera on Tour program.

We were also fortunate to see financial successes throughout the year. The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant and employee

retention tax credits gave us $1.13MM, which helped offset expenses associated with COVID-19 testing and prevention.

We also received an extraordinary $5MM anonymous bequest to the Opera Colorado Foundation, the company’s endowment. Overall, we ended the year with a modest surplus.

Thank you to our patrons and supporters who were alongside us as we made this exhilarating transition back to live opera. It is because of you and your love of what we do that we look forward to our 40th Anniversary Season with excitement and optimism.

Sincerely, Greg Carpenter

INSIDE OC KICK-OFF

Current and prospective members of Inside OC, Opera Colorado’s subscriber club for arts-loving folks ages 21-45, launched the 2021-22 Season with a one-of-a-kind event at the Ellie in October of 2021. While seated on stage amidst our set for Tosca, patrons enjoyed cocktails and a performance by our Artists in Residence emceed by Cherity Koepke, Director of Education & Community Engagement and the Director of the Artist in Residence Program. After the performance, guests embarked on a Halloween-themed backstage tour, during which they learned about the venue’s history and the various ghosts that are said to roam its halls!

TOSCA

The opening of Opera Colorado’s 2021-22 Season was special for artists, staff, crew, and audiences alike, as it was the first time we had all gathered for grand opera at the Ellie since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tosca delighted audiences in November of 2021, from the glorious, sweeping melodies of Tosca (soprano Melissa Citro) and Cavaradossi’s (tenor Rafael Davila) romantic act one duet and the demise of Baron Scarpia (baritone Luis Ledesma) to the leading lady’s dramatic final moments. The beautiful production, including handpainted muslin backdrops designed by Ercole Sormani and restored by Seattle Opera, was brought to life by director Louisa Muller and the Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus were conducted by Opera Colorado Music Director Ari Pelto.

UNKNOWN

In November of 2021, Opera Colorado joined Washington, DC-based company UrbanArias and other cocommissioners Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, Opera Birmingham, The Dallas Opera, and Minnesota Opera to present the digital world premiere of Unknown by composer Shawn Okpebholo and poet Marcus Amaker. Unknown explores war, honor, and memory through the eyes of soldiers, family members, and Tomb Guards who are connected to each other and the Tomb through their mutual service and sacrifice. The project, which was also made possible by additional support form Stephen E. and Dorothy P. Bird, saw nationwide press from The Washington Post, Sirius XM, PBS NewsHour, Operawire, and more.

THE SHINING

Opera Colorado presented the regional premiere of Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell’s The Shining, based on the novel by Stephen King, in February and March of 2022. The spine-tingling operatic adaptation of this iconic thriller was an experience like no other! Audiences were captivated as The Overlook Hotel and its otherworldly residents coaxed Jack Torrance (baritone Edward Parks) into terrorizing his wife Wendy (soprano Kelly Kaduce) and son Danny (Micah VonFeldt). Moravec’s ethereal score was executed meticulously by the Opera Colorado Orchestra under the baton of Ari Pelto, and David Radamés Toro lent his directorial expertise to the production. This monumental undertaking, featuring massive sets and digital projections and animations, was a highlight of the season.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE

As part of our Opera on Tour program, the 2021-22 Opera Colorado Artists in Residence brought a new, abridged production of The Pirates of Penzance to groups of all ages throughout Colorado. Gilbert and Sullivan created the original The Pirates of Penzance—a tale of sentimental pirates, young love, and the clash between piracy and the law. Cherity Koepke adapted this expansive operetta and envisioned all-new sets (executed by Bruce Bergner, Ron Mueller, and Annika Radovcich from the University of Colorado at Boulder) and costumes. The production will set sail again in the 202223 Season, reaching even more schools and community centers throughout the state.

AMERICAN SONG: INSPIRED

Each spring, the Opera Colorado Artists in Residence present a performance showcasing songs by American composers. American Song is an opportunity to fulfill our mission by introducing our Colorado community to modern and rarely-performed opera and art song (with a few favorites sprinkled in as well). In April of 2022, the program’s theme was “Inspired”: pieces that were sparked by other works of art, people, or even laughter! The 2021-22 Artists in Residence performed for an enthusiastic audience at the beautiful Elaine Wolf Theatre, and patrons, artists, and staff enjoyed a lively post-show reception.

SIP & SING

After a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Opera Colorado returned to Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club in March of 2022 for its fourth Sip & Sing program. This delightful evening included an exquisite multi-course dinner with wine pairings and an intimate performance by the Artists in Residence, all with an American theme.

Guests enjoyed courses with New York, Louisiana, and Colorado twists while being serenaded with songs by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and more.

CARMEN

Bizet’s blockbuster Carmen—what a way to end a season! For six performances in May of 2022, audiences delighted in the well-known arias of this beloved masterpiece. The fierce and mercurial leading lady was played to perfection by mezzosoprano Kate Aldrich, complemented impeccably by tenor Bruce Sledge’s troubled Don José and baritone Nmon Ford’s charismatic Escamillo. The sultry sounds of the Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus transported the audience to Sevilla, Spain in this lush and fanciful production directed by Keturah Stickann.

OPERA COLORADO GALA

On Friday, May 20, 2022, the Opera Colorado Gala made its triumphant return after a two-year hiatus. The dazzling evening at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House celebrated the 2021-22 Season’s successful return to the mainstage with three grand opera productions. Event Chairs Robin and Eric Yaeger also served as Presenting Sponsors alongside Mike and Julie Bock, and together with the Gala Committee they spearheaded all planning efforts.

A true highlight of the year, the black-tie evening began in the main lobby with cocktails, casino-style gaming, and a silent auction. Over 250 guests then proceeded to the Studio Loft for an elegant multi-course dinner, performance from Opera Colorado’s 2021-22 Artists in Residence, a spirited live auction, and paddle raise. The festivities were capped off with dessert and post-dinner dancing to Moments Notice in the Chambers Grant Salon.

Onsite fundraising efforts through the live and silent auctions as well as the paddle raise doubled budgeted projections. In total, the event grossed $407,096, exceeding its original goal, in support of Opera Colorado’s expanding artistic initiatives and extensive education and community engagement programs. Opera Colorado congratulates Eric and Robin Yaeger, Mike and Julie Bock, and the entire Gala Committee on an outstanding achievement!
