During this year’s Spring Show, a few of us at the One of a Kind Show decided to embark on a summer road trip. We weren’t sure where to go at first; we wanted to visit a place where we could also see a few of our out-of-town exhibitors. After months of preparing, reviewing our schedules, we decided to head to Southern Ontario to visit Bracebridge, Hillier, and Picton. It was an action packed two days. We visited the Muskoka Arts & Craft Show and three studios. If you follow us on Instagram, you would also know about the extreme heat alert, tornado and flash flood warnings. Despite the fierce weather conditions, we had a great time and this was in no part thanks to the hospitality of all of our One of a Kind artisans. Of course, I have to also personally thank my colleagues Valérie and Jill for being great travelling buddies. In this issue, we want to present to you our stories from the road. Our first stop is the Fairy Open House in Hillier. Fables, Fantasy and Fairy Tales have been an exhibitor at the Show for 19 years. In what started as a hobby to relieve the stress of city living, Teresa and Terry have turned making their finely crafted fairy figurines into a full fledged-business. With a packed Open House, it is clear their whimsical vision and playful sense of humour (we especially love the “Don’t piss off the fairy” sign at the entrance of their home/studio) have resonated with their legions of supporters. In this piece, we further look at their inspirations, processes, and how a little fairy magic has changed their lives. Our next stop: PEC Lavender Farm. In 2005, Rolande and Derek moved to Prince Edward County with the intention to start a lavender farm. Today, they have three acres of lavender, a bed and breakfast, and a very successful annual lavender event; we speak to the couple about their growing business. Before hitting the beach, we paid Mena Dragonfly a visit. When Melanie and her husband Mark left Vancouver in the fall of 2011, they were ready to make a lifestyle change. As fate would have it, they found a beautiful Victorian house in Picton and transformed it into their home, a ceramic studio, and a bed and breakfast. Their serendipitous story reminds us that sometimes new opportunities can only be discovered when we are willing to take the first step. A Fairy Tale In 1991, Terry and Teresa left their 9 to 5 jobs, moved to Hillier, and started Fables, Fantasy & Fairy Tales. Today, their handcrafted fairy figurines can be found in collections around the world. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and Fables, Fantasy and Fairy Tales?

We started Fables, Fantasy & Fairy Tales in 1991 out of a desire to create original hand crafted items that took the viewer away to another world and relieved the stress of day to day life in the middle of a recession. Through customer feedback and our own personal fascination with fairies, we started making hand crafted fairies from porcelain. What began as a part time hobby grew into a business and has been our full time occupation for 15 years. Today, we sell our fairies at craft shows and through galleries across North America as well as on our website www.fairys.com. Our fairies have flown all over the world and can be found in collections in Australia, Japan, Argentina, England, France, Holland, and beyond. Our studio is located in our home which is an old renovated church located in beautiful Price Edward County in Ontario, Canada.

How long have you been doing the One of a Kind Show for?

We have been doing the One of a Kind Show for 19 years. We started upstairs at the old automotive building.

Can you tell us a bit more about your home studio in Hillier?

We were originally located in Richmond Hill and reached a point where we were ready to buy a home. We didn’t need to be in the Toronto area and decided country life fit our personalities and budget better. With a map of southern Ontario we went looking for real estate and everything came together in Prince Edward County. 10 One of Kind Magazine

As an island, it is considered a “tween place” and that’s where fairies are most likely to be found. We still believe the doorway to the fairy realm is located somewhere here in Prince Edward County. The church in which we live was built in 1912. As anyone who has seen Terry in his tie-dye shirts can guess, he’s an old hippy. The movie Alice’s Restaurant made an impression on him and the idea of living in an old church captured his imagination. We’ve been here for 16 years now and we love how it functions as a home and studio. We also love our hamlet Hillier. We can see a sky full of stars at night; we know all our neighbours and it doesn’t hurt that we have about six wineries within a kilometer from our home. When we first moved to Hillier we had a sign made for the studio but found that being “open” didn’t work for us. About 6 years ago we decided to try it again but just focus on one weekend and so our Fairy Open House was conceived.

Let’s us know more about the Fairy Open House at your studio?

We have been privileged to get to know so many of our regular customers who collect our fairies and we wanted an opportunity to show them where and how their fairies were created. It’s also an opportunity for us to treat our customers to some wine, cheese, and fairy goodies and to say thank you for supporting us and our work over the past year. It’s great when we can greet our customers with a hug and a kiss. At our Fairy Open House no name tags are required and we have many regulars who look

forward to seeing each other here. And of course, people look forward to meeting Brutus, our moluccan cockatoo. One of the questions we get about our work is “Where do you buy your porcelain figures?” At our Open House we get to show people the answer to that question which is of course, we make them. We demonstrate the entire process from creating molds from original sculptures, pouring the liquid porcelain slip, firing the porcelain in the kiln, china painting the fairy faces, assembling the bodies and dressing and wigging each fairy. They end up with a much greater understanding of why the fairies cost what they do and the love and effort that goes into each one.

Do you guys have a favourite fairy?

Our favorite fairy is constantly changing. Because we have so many collectors we’re constantly challenged to come up with new ideas. My favorite right now is Eternity which is our Limited Edition Fairy for the fall. Over the years we have lost some of our favorite customers and we wanted to celebrate them and the impact they have had on us so we decided to create a Fairy named Eternity who will commemorate the lives and spirits of those we have loved and lost as they have moved on to a new realm.

Any new pieces we can expect at the One of a Kind Christmas Show?

We will have Eternity at the One of a Kind Christmas Show as well as at least one new Christmas Fairy. We have fun coming up with a fairy for the Hall of Fame display and it’s always sold by the end of the show. You can be certain there will always be new fairies at the show as we have to keep our collectors excited and looking for their next fairy. MY ROAD TRIP STORY Teresa & Terry

Our last road trip together was to Dallas. We do a show there and drove from Prince Edward County to Dallas in two days and then took the scenic route on the way back. We drove through crystal mining country in Arkansas and stopped at a couple of mines where we purchased amazing crystals that we mount some of our fairies on. Our road trip essential is sunflower or pumpkin seeds. Shelling and eating seeds is an old trucker’s tip to keep you alert while driving. The only problem is, no matter how careful you are, the seed husks always end up all over the floor. Fall 2013 19

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and Prince Edward County Lavender? How did you get into this field of work?

We moved to Prince Edward County from Whitehorse Yukon in 2005 with the intent of starting a lavender farm. In the course of our travels we have encountered many lavender farms and we envisioned ourselves doing the same at some point in time. The venture became a reality when we left the Yukon. Derek was in the Yukon for 24 years, working in construction and on film productions and I was a geographer who worked in land surveying for the federal government for 14 years. The idea of growing something was very appealing and lavender with its value added potential seemed to fit the bill. We now have three acres of lavender totaling about 17,000 plants and are in the process of expanding our herb essential oil crops with peppermint, spearmint, thyme, rosemary, sage, and oregano. We have our boutique at the farm where we feature our products. We like to bring freshness and novelty to our boutique so every year we add new creations derived from our harvest, either lavender or from another herb we grow.

You guys also run a B&B, what is a typical day like for you?

Of course the farming activities and the B & B take place at the same time so it’s very busy around our place from June until September. Typically we’re on the go from 7:00 am until 8:00pm. We have five employees this year so to keep everyone busy and productive is really a full time job for both of us. The B & B is a great way to get to meet people and to spread the word about our farm and boutique. Let’s just say that both ventures complement each other very well.

Can you tell us a bit about Hillier, where the farm is located? Hillier is one of seven wards in Prince EdwardCounty, with most of the wine production occurring there. The hamlet of Hillier is very

small with one antique shop and about 40 houses. It is the gateway to the western part of Prince Edward County more or less 30 km due south of Trenton just off Hwy 33 (The Loyalist Parkway). It is all agricultural land in our area, mainly cash crop (corn, wheat, soya beans and canola) and of course grapes and now lavender.

In early July, you hosted the Lavender Festival drawing great crowds. Can you tell us a bit about the event?

We had our 2nd annual Lavender Festival this past July and it was a great success with attendance increasing from 700 to close to 2000! We have a wide variety of things to keep everyone interested from U-Pick lavender, essential oil extraction demo, a culinary tasting area (all of our lavender and herb culinary products are sampled for free), a craft area where people can make a wand or a dried flower arrangement or blend there own tub tea, a balloon artist for the kids, and last but not least an hourly raffle. To carry on with the joyous festivities, we even have live bands. We haven’t had a lot of time to think about next year yet. We know the activities above will still be there but there will definitely be several new things and you can always check our website www.peclavender.com for updates and times and general information about the farm, our activities, and new products.

Can you share with us a DIY project using lavender?

The lavender wand has to be done with fresh material, so this great project is only possible in the summer time. However, sachets are very easy. The first thing is to harvest your lavender at the florets level (meaning that there are no flowers open yet). You bunch your harvest into an elastic band and you let dry upside down for approximately 10 days. Once the bunch is dried, just rub it over a bowl. All the florets will fall in and you now have your material to create a sachet. Et voila! Fall 2013 23

Making a Move Melanie and her husband have never heard of Prince Edward County until the fall of 2011. After planning a short visit (which was then extended), the couple fell in love with the place, purchased a home, and now, they are living the dream they have always wanted—being entrepreneurs. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your company Mena Dragonfly?

About 13 years ago I took a wheel throwing workshop at a community centre in Vancouver. I was hooke again at the community centre just to get time in the studio. Eventually I found a studio space and beg 9-5 but I spent a lot of time wishing I could be making pottery all day long. What do you love most about Prince Edward County?

We started living here full time in May 2012. The house had been a Bed & Breakfast before we bought it but we went to work renovating the guest rooms so that they reflected more of our style while keeping the flavour of the era from when the house was built. On Canada Day weekend we welcomed our first guests to The Black Licorice Tree B&B. It’s hard to pick one thing I love most about Prince Edward County. The people here are friendly and really supportive of local businesses. Sandbanks is so incredibly beautiful, it’s hard to believe you’re walking along the shores of Lake Ontario when you’re at the beach, it feels more like a tropical location. And the dragonflies! There is such a huge variety of dragonflies here, small, big, multicolored. I love it!

Can you tell us a bit more about the B&B both you and your husband run? The house is just over 120 years old and though it had been a B&B before we got here it had been closed for a couple of years. We’re located right across the the street from West Lake, just a few minutes from Sandbanks Provincial Park. We have three guest rooms, two in the house and one just below my studio in the Carriage House. We serve breakfast on our screened in front porch with views of the Lake. Mark cooks a full breakfast for our guests each morning. The French Toast has become a signature dish and many guests have started requesting it when they make their reservations. We also have just under 7 acres of property. Last fall we had a meandering trail mowed through our back field. It winds through the grasses, past our fruit trees, through the beginnings of our wildflower garden and ends in our grove of Scotch Pine trees. I walk the trail everyday and I usually see about 30 to 40 dragonflies flying about. 34 One of Kind Magazine

The name of the B&B was inspired by a painting Mark made while we were living in Vancouver. It is made out of materials that were destined for the landfill - an old closet door & two cans of paint. The painting is simply a white background with a black tree painted off centre. A line joins the clouds above and roots through the tree. It’s a striking piece and it’s now inspired a new line of pottery we debuted at the 2012 One of a Kind Christmas Show. I make the ceramic pieces and Mark hand draws The Black Licorice Tree on each one, making them all unique, functional works of art.

Are there any similarities running a B&B and operating your own handmade business? Any differences? One thing I’ve learned about selling handmade products is that the whole experience is made richer when you can actually connect with the person who made the piece - or in my case with the person who is purchasing it. I know many people go to the One of a Kind Shows to meet and talk with the artisans and for me I love selling directly to customers. I love talking with people about pottery, about dragonflies, about being an artist. In fact I hardly ever leave my booth during the One of a Kind Show because I don’t want to miss out on having a chat with someone who may happen to stop by. This connection also enhances the experience for our B&B guests. Being social with our guests is key to enriching their stay with us. We take the time to get to know everyone, we try to cater to special dietary needs and we love to help our guests plan their trips here. We also give our guests access to most of the house (we have a private apartment in the back). We want everyone to feel welcome and relaxed here - because that’s how we like to feel when we’re staying at B&Bs.

The pottery and the B&B are such a great combination of businesses. Our guests get to test out my tableware while they have breakfast and everyone of course gets a tour of the studio. Plus we’ve had a few One of a Kind customers stay with us as B&B guests. It’s been wonderful to see how participating in the One of a Kind Shows has allowed me to create lasting connections with the people who purchase my pottery.

You are a part of the Arts Trail, can you let us know more about this? The Arts trail is a self-guided route winding around Prince Edward County that highlights many of the artists who live here. The trail is marked by road signs and there’s also a guide book available which includes a profile of each artist participating in the Trail. It’s a great way to find and meet the artists directly and get a glimpse into their studio spaces.

MY ROAD TRIP STORY Melanie & Mark Last road trip you’ve been on: The last road trip I went on was in January 2012 What was the destination: Prince Edward County, it was our first time to the County and that was the weekend we found our house. What is your #1 road trip essential? Good music. We always travel with a portable speaker that plugs into our iPhones - we even take it to the beach with us. Fall 2013 37

Mark’s French Toast with Berry Compote (Serve 2) This is the recipe to the signature item on Melanie and Mark’s breakfast menu at the B&B. Enjoy! Photo & Recipe: Black Licorice Tree B&B Place 2 heaping tablespoons of slivered almonds in a dry, medium-hot pan. Toast the almonds until they are a very light brown - be careful they burn easily. Once toasted remove from the heat and set aside. Berry Compote: 1 cup chopped organic blueberries 1 cup chopped organic strawberries or organic raspberries (or a combination of both) 1 heaping tbsp of white sugar 1 heaping tbsp of brown sugar pinch of salt pinch of cracked pepper 1/2 shot of dark, spiced rum Stir everything into a saucepan on medium-high heat until the mixtures starts to bubble then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes uncovered and stirring occasionally. French Toast: Whisk together: 2 eggs 1/3 cup of milk 1 tsp sugar pinch of salt pinch of cinnamon Use good quality, day old white bread cut into 3/4”-1” thick slices. Add a tsp of butter to a medium-high pan. Quickly dip the bread into the mixture, making sure it’s not saturated. Place the bread in the pan and flip over when it turns golden brown. Eggs & milk tend to burn quite easily so keep an eye on the bread and make sure it doesn’t burn. Layer the pieces of french toast on a plate, pour the berry compote over the toast. Garnish with toasted almonds and fresh strawberries. Serve with whipped cream and warmed, Canadian Maple Syrup. Fall 2013 39

1. We unanimously agreed that

chips would be the unhealthy snack of choice, but we couldn’t quite agree on the flavours. At the end, we had Sour Cream & Onion, and Valérie, being the healthy one, got Lightly Salted Potato Chips.

to do, so we had a few too many coffees (iced and regular) to stay awake. Also, lots of water to stay hydrated with the extreme heat alert! The highest temperature recorded on day 1 of our road trip was as high as 41 degrees celsius.
