Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane’s RECORD SUCCESS The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane has achieved unprecedented success in 2018, with a record number of tickets sold, shows, and participating designers in the prestigious five-day event. Staged at magnificent Old Government House at QUT Gardens Point Campus for the second consecutive year, the 12th Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane attracted up to 3,500 fashion fans, with all eight, highly-coveted runway group shows and events selling out in record time. For the first time ever, two encore performances were added to the program to cater to demand – signifying a 25 per cent increase in seating capacity. In addition, MBFF 2018 featured 100 designers and retailers, with more than 800 new-season outfits on show – including Queensland, Australian and international labels, as well as next generation designers. Principal Partner Mercedes-Benz has continued its proud and ongoing support of the Queensland fashion industry, lending invaluable sponsorship to the 12th Fashion Festival. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane has again delivered outstanding results for Brisbane’s fashion industry and creative industries. Their MBFFTV Live Stream has been extensively viewed by national media and fashion industry heavyweights alike, cementing the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane as Australia’s premier Spring/Summer launch platform. This year Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane was pleased to support Bravehearts, and will donate $2,000 from ticket sales to the charity.

MBFF 2018 saw special, off-site runway spectacular, Mercedes-Benz Group Show 1 held at

Brisbane landmark St John’s Cathedral, incorporating two shows (encore included) – marking their biggest runway shows in terms of scale in their 12-year history. •

There were 200 model bookings across the Fashion Festival events this year.

A total of 200 volunteers dedicated their time to make the Festival possible.

•

More than 200 people were directly employed at the Fashion Festival, including hair and makeup

teams, production, management and support teams. •

Up to 30 dressers worked backstage each night to ensure a seamless transition between outfits

on the runway. •

#mbffbrisbane has already been tagged nearly 5,500 times on Instagram.

Up to 6,000 bottles of Acqua Panna and San Pellegrino were sipped throughout the week in the

Fashion Bar, Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge and backstage. •

Some 36 emerging designers appeared on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane runway,

including students of QUT, past graduates of TAFE Queensland Brisbane, Club Couture Australia and some very talented Kelvin Grove SC students who presented their label, Bold. •

The runway Group Shows were live streamed for the second time. The films were professionally

produced by TPD Media, sponsored by Brisbane City Council and hosted by model, TV presenter and former Miss World Australia, Courtney Thorpe. •

Prestigious global brands including Valentino, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo, Alexander Wang,

Balmain, Furla and Emporio Armani were showcased at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane, as part of the QueensPlaza High Tea and Fashion Trends series. In addition, luxury jewellers Tiffany & Co., Paspaley and Bulgari were featured on the runway and in Fashion Festival events.

The following week, by chance, I went to a birthday party with a friend, only to find out that the birthday boy was Daniel. After this chance second meeting we made sure we stuck together from them on.” “Daniel proposed on our morning beach walk with our chihuahua Coco in toe. It was a moment we will both always remember. That morning, on the usually busy Surfers Paradise Beach, there was not a single person on the beach but us. It was such an emotional and beautiful morning. 3. ORIGINALITY IS THE KEY TO THE SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY OF YOUR CEREMONY The more information about yourselves you can give your Celebrant the better. I believe in creating powerful, respectful and unique ceremonies that are tailored to your individual needs, fusing those elements of love that are true to your dreams of your special day. Keep it real. Keep it simple and the elegance will flow. We can only write your story with the information we are given. There is nothing worse than going to a wedding and not being able to relate to what the Celebrant is saying. During your sessions, make sure your Celebrant has your story correct. It’s about all of those moments in time that have lead you to each other, moments to be cherished and celebrated... and creating memories for your future. Celebrants won’t always use all of the information you give them, however, they will be looking at how you interact with each other, your body language towards each other, how you speak in conversation with each other. This gives the Celebrant a well-rounded view on who you are in your relationship.

7. DISCUSS YOUR VISION FOR THE FULL DAY WITH YOUR CELEBRANT Your Celebrant is in the best position to make any announcements to advise your guests what will happen once the ceremony has concluded... so in the planning stage of the ceremony, you will need to discuss things such as any special instructions regarding the area, fire exits, group and family photo positions, what time the canapés and drinks will start and where, etc. Announcements ensure there is no confusion among your guests and most importantly, they won’t have to worry the Bride and Groom with these details. 8. BE REALISTIC IN YOUR EXPECTATIONS The last thing any vendor wants to hear is that the Bride and Groom did not enjoy their day because something happened and nothing was said or done about it. It is really important to communicate all of your plans for your day with your vendors. As professionals, we can all offer support and guidance on different situations and it is up to you to communicate specifically what it is you want and can work with. Sometimes working from a run sheet can help with timing, lists for photography options, music, ceremony start time, transport... everything has to run like clockwork in order to maintain a smooth transition into your evening and meal time. All of your vendors will work with one another to ensure we meet the standards for what you have planned as your vision for your special day.

4. BE IN THE MOMENT ON THE DAY AND LET YOUR VENDORS DO THE STRESSING FOR YOU The stage is set and its show time! By now, all of the planning is done, the things that could go wrong have come and gone and on the day, what will be, will be. It won’t matter now if the cake doesn’t look right, if the sashes on the chair are the wrong shade of purple or if the flowers aren’t exactly how you imagined. You’re about to walk down the aisle and pledge your love to your best friend for the rest of your life. So just enjoy the moment. Feel amazing, eat loads of food and drink loads of water during the preparation phase so you have energy to entertain your guests. Noone else will know about the things that won’t go to plan anyway. They are all there to support your marriage and celebrate in the moment with you. Only you will know the difference and it no longer matters. Your vendors will all be busy making sure you can enjoy yourself with your guests and relax. It is up to them now to make sure everything is sorted for you.

Your day won’t be ruined by the wet weather. A different plan of attack is put in place. Allocate someone to be able to contact all of your guests as to the new arrangements. Make sure you let all your vendors know in advance what you have decided. There is nothing worse than showing up to a ceremony area and not having half of your vendors there!

Your Celebrant creates an atmosphere at your ceremony so that all of your guests can relate to your personal relationship journey together. It’s a time for celebration. It’s also a time for your married life to begin. It’s exciting and when you are finally announced ‘Mr & Mrs’, that feeling is only enhanced by the fact that your chosen Authorised Celebrant has just made it legal! Yes, that’s right, you are now legally married.

1. CHOOSE A CELEBRANT ON PERSONALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM... NOT BUDGET Choosing the right Celebrant to perform what will be one of the biggest and most special moments in your life is an investment. I am often asked “How much do I charge?” as the first question, without the couples really understanding the work that goes into a ceremony. On average, we spend 10-15 hours per ceremony, meeting with the couples, sending out emails to make sure we have the correct information, ensuring that if something legal comes up, it is dealt with correctly, filling out paperwork, researching topics of discussion, liaising with wedding vendors working on the same wedding and writing, and rewriting, and rewriting until we have a ceremony worth presenting, rehearsing and conducting. It’s important to take note that an Authorised Celebrant is running a small business. They must be fully registered with the Attorney General, attend Ongoing Professional Development days to keep up to date with any changes in the Marriage Act, abide by a code of practice, provide resources and a PA system, be fully insured for Public and Indemnity Insurance, provide transport and the general everyday running costs associated with their business such as communications, marketing, resources and memberships. Choosing the right Authorised Celebrant is an investment. This is the person who ensures your wedding meets all the legal requirements and validates your marriage. Your Authorised Celebrant ensures your ceremony is conducted professionally and with the utmost respect given to the responsibilities of marriage. It is always a good idea to speak with a few different Authorised MASTER Celebrants to gain235x320 an understanding of what you are looking for. 2. HAVE IDEAS THAT YOU WANT TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR CEREMONY It’s important to have an idea of how long you would like your ceremony to be? What rituals, if any, you would like to incorporate? Do you want to include people who are not already in the bridal party? There are so many different ideas that can be included and it really does come down to personal preference. Then obviously a big one was locking eyes with Richard when I entered the church. I really thought I was going to be a blubbery mess, but seeing him made me feel at ease. Seeing the smiles on my parents’ faces was the best. I can’t thank them enough for providing us with the most beautiful wedding day. Seeing how happy they were was a special feeling. Then dancing the night away was the best way to end a magical day. Having my grandmother there was so special. Giving her a big hug before we walked down the aisle as husband and wife was a moment I will always treasure.” RICHARD’S HIGHLIGHTS: “Having both my grandmothers there was a massive highlight for me as they have been a huge part of my life. AMANDA BELLABY AND CAMERON SHERRIN MET THROUGH A MUTUAL FRIEND AND WERE SET UP ON A BLIND DATE. “Cameron planned a local weekend getaway, booking a suite at the Stamford Plaza overlooking the City Botanic Gardens and Brisbane River. The evening began with champagne and dinner at ARIA. Whilst enjoying the delicious cuisine, Cameron’s mother was stealthily arranging petals on the mattress in the hotel room to read ‘Will you marry me? She also complemented the room with candles and ensured the champagne bottle was chilled in an icy bucket. Following a short walk along the pier, we returned to the suite where I almost immediately blurted out, ‘Yes’ not allowing Cameron to ask or say anything!”

All of the greenery was simply complemented with white florals. Given that we selected striking and heritage-listed venues, we wanted our styling to be fairly minimal so as not to compete with the grandeur of the buildings. However, most importantly, we wanted our wedding to be lots of fun for our guests. Whilst the ceremony was quite formal and traditional, we made sure people were able to let loose at the reception. Indeed, the wonderful and attentive staff at Customs House ensured that guests’ wine glasses were never empty and the MC and DJ from G&M DJs blasted all the cringe-worthy ‘80s and ‘90s tunes that we’d selected to keep our guests on the dance floor. The day was not just for us but for the beautiful people with whom we share our lives. For our first dance, we selected ‘Everything’ by Michael Bublé because the lyrics speak about a great, powerful love without being too sappy. And, to temper any sentimentality, we chose Kenny Loggin’s ‘Danger Zone’ as our wedding entrance song.”

JESSICA + DANIEL FIG TREE RESTAURANT, BYRON BAY 3 MAY 2018 JESSICA MURPHY AND DANIEL OTTO MET AT WORK. “We were both called into a meeting one day at TAFE Queensland yet we had never met previously. From there we had a number of meetings and conversations - all work related. However, one day we decided to spend time together outside of work, completely as friends. From there our friendship grew, until one day we realised that this may well have been more than a friendship and the start of something special.” “The proposal happened a few months after we first went to Fig Tree. We had just been camping in Brooms Head, NSW and were still in our camping clothes... not looking overly glamorous. We decided to pass through Byron Bay on the way home and Daniel decided to take me to Fig Tree on the way, knowing it was a place we now loved to go. We walked over to the fig tree to look at the incredible view and after a few minutes, Daniel began to tell me how lucky he was and how much he loved me and proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him. I broke down in tears and in the excitement forgot to say ‘yes,’ at which point Daniel said, ‘You haven’t said yes yet’. To which Jessica replied, ‘You haven’t put the ring on yet - you are supposed to put the ring on!’ The ring went on and the rest is history.” Daniel chose to propose at Fig Tree because he knew that would be where they would choose to get married and he believed in the sentiment of proposing under the same fig tree where they would later say their vows.

OCTAVIA GRZEGORCZYK AND CRAIG BIRD WERE MARRIED ON 7 OCTOBER 2017 AT OCTAVIA’S PARENTS’ ACREAGE PROPERTY IN THORNLANDS. “Craig’s proposal was low key, at home with dinner, he knew I wouldn’t like anything else! My parents spent months cleaning up their property to make it perfect for our wedding. Having the wedding in a forest, I was instantly drawn to a rustic theme. We had a marquee and an open air space with fairy lights and comfy couches to sit on. We had an open style bar as well as a beer keg van, which was a huge hit. Everyone knew how much we love our smoked and bbq style food so that’s what we had (Gabo’s Smokehouse). Everyone loved the style. It was not a formal sit down dinner. Everyone was invited to select their food and sit wherever they wished. The styling was DIY. We chose Casey Jane of Casey Jane Photography to capture our memories. She is the most amazing photographer who made us feel comfortable and helped us so much in the lead up to the wedding. Our first dance was to ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran. Every time the song came on at home, I made Craig dance with me, so it only seemed appropriate. We wanted a low key wedding that was focused on everyone having a good time. We knew when we first started planning that the perfect wedding for us would be to have a marquee with fairy lights, live music and amazing food. All our guests mentioned that it was such an ‘us’ wedding. We absolutely loved having all our friends and family help out with the wedding. My friends did my hair and makeup. We had breakfast (cooked by Darko) at Kangaroo Point and a lovely walk around Brisbane. He went down on one knee at Old Government House at QUT. This is where we first bumped into each other. Not long after, it became ‘our spot.’ We then had a picnic at the Botanic Gardens before video calling half of Europe (our families) to tell them the good news.”

“For our honeymoon, we wanted somewhere we hadn’t been before and somewhere relaxing. We chose Fiji. We wanted time to reflect on the big day. Fiji allowed us to balance relaxing with some activities.” “Our advice to others planning a wedding is to focus on each other on the day and assign someone to sort out the things that pop up. It worked for us. Proof read the best man’s speech to ensure there aren’t any surprises. Also don’t forget to put some time into planning the honeymoon.” MARIJA’S HIGHLIGHT: “It’s hard to pick just one moment. My highlight was during the church ceremony. We had our heads resting on one another and many of our family and friends praying for us and sending their best wishes. It was a special feeling.” DARKO’S HIGHLIGHT: “My highlight was seeing Marija for the first time. I could barely wait to see her and when I did, she was just so beautiful.”

The summer of 2016 was beautiful in France and we fell in love with the country. I tried to keep it a secret while looking for the right location to propose. The moment I first made contact with you I could tell you had a great passion for creating wonderful art and I absolutely loved all of our dealings with you. I didn’t realise how many options we had until you took the time to individualise some ideas that were just perfect for us. Smaller details as to how our names were written, the paw print for our precious dog, Saki to the overall design of our gorgeous hearts and platter. You really have done a wonderful job and we cannot thank you enough!” MEGAN & JOSH xxx

EVERLASTING UNITY ART... YOUR UNIQUE CEREMONY RITUAL WILL BECOME A TREASURED FAMILY HEIRLOOM “Megan rang me a couple of months before she and Josh were to be married. They wanted a unique ritual to incorporate into their ceremony and initially looked at a sand ceremony before dismissing the idea, wanting more than just a jar of sand as the memory of their day. They asked me if there was something they could combine during their ceremony and have made into an art piece for their home. A love of millifiori (Italian glass rods known as “a thousand flowers”), discovered on a trip to Venice, inspired me to come home and create my own coloured glass beads. I have been using these in art pieces for some years and I thought I could design a ritual around these beads... and this is how Everlasting Unity Art evolved.” “They first started by going onto the website and looking through the art pieces I have created, something to suit all budgets. Then they chose the bead colours, a mixed pink for Megan and the mixed blue representing Josh. There’s no limit to the number of colours you can use, maybe one for each member of the family. I then sent the beads to them before the day, along with a finished hanging heart and a photo of a similar art piece to the one I would create for them, both on loan, to display on the celebrant’s table for friends and family to understand the unique process. The celebrant will be reminding their guests of the symbolism of two people becoming one and two families becoming one, a great idea for a blended family. Megan and Josh had a dog, Saki, who was their furry baby and they wanted to be included, so I sent them a little glass paw print to add to the mix. After the wedding, they sent the combined beads back to me in the post bag provided. I then set about washing and sorting the beads before placing them with tweezers onto the kiln shelf into their unique design. I created a platter for them as well as three hanging hearts, one for them and one each as a gift for their parents. They now have an everlasting memory of the day they said “I Do” and a beautiful family heirloom. I love making these unique art pieces for couples and families, no two the same as no two love stories are the same. “ Donna

Pauline describes the proposal: “Ken surprised me by decorating our cabin in Maleny with a candle and rose petal path, three dozen long-stemmed roses, photos of us together and a burning log fire. by Natasha Lewis from Brisbane Marriage Celebrants on the Private River Deck, State Library of Queensland. The reception was held in The Alabaster Room at Victoria Park Golf Course and the theme was Romantic Elegance. Kwintowski Photography captured the images from the day. Pauline was dressed by Fiorenza Bridal and the bridesmaids were dressed by Ferrari Bridal and Formal Wear. Hair and makeup by Bella Brides. The men wore Hugo Boss. Flowers by Bouquet Boutique and cake by Vanilla Pod. Guests were entertained by Ben from G&M DJ’s. Mr & Mrs Smith chose ‘On a Night Like This’ by Dave Barnes for their first dance. Seeing Ken’s reaction when I walked down the aisle and being able to settle each other’s nerves by holding hands during the ceremony. Our personalised vows, dancing with my dad and new husband and just seeing the day we planned come together.” Ken’s Highlights: “Seeing Pauline walking down the aisle, writing and exchanging our personalised vows and hearing Natasha pronounce us husband and wife and kissing my wife.”

“We could not have had the perfect wedding without the bridal party. The amazing bridesmaids and best man helped every step of the way in the lead up to the wedding, as well as the bride’s parents. The team at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort was great.”

BONNY-LEE EICHORN AND RYAN ADAMCZYK MET THE OLD FASHIONED WAY...AT A BAR… THE CHALK HOTEL IN BRISBANE: “My sister and I were trying to get into the city after going to a 21st birthday party and we couldn’t get a taxi so we walked down the road to The Chalk Hotel for a few drinks. Ryan came up to us and asked if he could buy us a drink. My sister asked him for a very complicated cocktail, which he tried his hardest to order but didn’t have any luck so he bought us another drink. We chatted for ages and then he asked for my number when I was leaving.” Bonny-Lee describes the proposal as: “One of the most romantic days of our lives, aside from the wedding. We travelled from Brisbane to Sydney. Ryan surprised me by telling me that we were going to be staying at the Shangri-La Sydney. We stayed in the penthouse suite, which had almost 360 degree views of Sydney Harbour. We were getting ready to head out for dinner, when Ryan asked me to join him to take in the view from our room. He had a bottle of Vintage Verve on ice. Our song was playing… ‘All I Want is You’ by Ball Park Music. He went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He caught me by surprise and I was the happiest girl in the world!”

EMILY STRICKLAND AND MATTHEW BENNISON MET ON A SCHOOL SKI TRIP IN GRADE 12 IN NEW ZEALAND. “We met on the slopes through mutual friends.” Emily describes the proposal: “Matt surprised me with a weekend away in Flaxton at a beautiful B&B called Allara Homestead. We walked down to the dam on the property and had a picnic. It was there that Matt got down on one knee and proposed. It caught me by surprise and it was such a stunning location to become engaged. My engagement ring and our wedding bands were custom made by Adam Graham, AG Designer Jeweller in Tattersall’s Arcade, Brisbane City. Matt knew the style I liked but in the end he designed it with the help of Adam. He did a very good job!” “As we got engaged in Flaxton, we had a connection to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and decided to check out a couple of the many venues in the area, including Flaxton Gardens. I think after first seeing the view, facilities and reception area, we were really impressed with Flaxton Gardens. The location is beautiful, the grounds are so well kept, and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. I think we had decided early on in our research that we wanted a destination wedding and Flaxton Gardens ticked all the boxes we were looking for. The staff were incredibly helpful when it came time to plan for our wedding.”

We wanted a simple, elegant and intimate wedding that was full of love and laughter. We only added some flowers from Starbright Floral Design, including a show-stopping 8 foot cherry blossom on the bar. Nic Faitos from Starbright suggested we include the cherry blossom because we went on a vacation to Japan together to see the cherry blossoms. It was a really nice touch and something special for us.” “We had Courtney’s brother-in-law create a playlist for our dinner and dancing. It was his gift to us and the dance floor was a hit!
