One thousand hours, 400 volunteers, one afternoon PROJECT SERVE PREPARES TO HELP THE GUELPH COMMUNITY JONATHAN MARUN-BATISTA

ON SEPT. 16, 2017, U of G students and community members will come together to provide over 1,000 hours of community service in a single afternoon.

Project Serve is an annual initiative where students offer up an afternoon of their time to serve the Guelph community.

In a n int er v iew w it h T he Ontarion, Galen Fick, coordinator of local engagement at the University of Guelph, stated that, “Project Serve was established here at the University 20 years ago, and every year we see nearly 400 students becoming involved with 20 or 30 community partners.”

Project Serve is a collaborative effort between our students and the community around us.

Volunteers contribute to the flourishing of community efforts, and on the day of the event, members involved often see those efforts realized. Fick mentioned that with extra hands and able bodies working toward the same goals, some goals are achieved in record-breaking time, allowing for many agencies to allocate

benefit just as much as the partners involved. Some students get hired, or receive valuable handson experience.”

Over the years, Project Serve

has also been a tool to help firstyear students make the transition to university life. “40 to 50 per cent of the volunteers involved are first-year students, so it’s an awesome way for them to break out of their bubbles and connect with agencies aligned with their own personal interests,” Fick stated.

Ultimately, Project Serve acts as a liaison between the students and the community, connecting students to partners in an effort to provide mutually beneficial experiences.

Minister Matthews leads roundtable discussion OSAP CHANGES ARE A RESOUNDING SUCCESS | TIANN NANTAIS ON TUESDAY, Sept. 12, Minister Deb Matthews visited campus for a roundtable discussion with undergraduate and graduate students.

MPP Matthews, who is the minister of advanced education and skills development, as well as the deputy premier, spoke to students about the new Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), and encouraged them to share their personal experiences with the program.

Students at the table expressed gratitude for the amount of funding they were receiving to help pay for their postsecondary education, citing recent changes to OSAP. Last year, the Liberal government undertook an overhaul of the OSAP program, eliminating tax

However, some participants shared that many of their fellow students were unaware of how those changes could affect them and proposed more advertising for the program.

Renovations to Photo Arts Club space begin Sept. 18 | PHOTO BY ALORA GRIFFITHS

Photo Arts Club closes their doors | FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 40 YEARS, the Photo Arts Club (PAC) will not be opening its doors to the public this September. According to Ema Suvajac, a member of the Photo Arts Club executive, PAC is required to hand over their keys to the space by Sept.

17 so that renovations can be made to accommodate the Guelph Queer Equality group.

For the last four decades, the Photo Arts Club has provided unlimited access to photography equipment, studio space, and darkroom facilities to University of Guelph students, as well as to the general public, for $20 per semester.

On that note, Suvajac expressed the

club’s belief that everyone should have affordable access to arts space.

“It was not our decision to close our doors and we are extremely concerned about how we will be able to function once half of the PAC space — the large darkroom [. . .] and the fully equipped studio — are destroyed,” Suvajac told The Ontarion via email.

Unfortunately, holding on to all of their space was not a viable option according to the CSA. CSA President Chelsea Mulvale told The Ontarion that after the consultation between PAC, the CSA, and UC admin that took place over the summer, the Photo Arts Club decided to take their needs to the

board level. Mulvale told The Ontarion that in order to keep a space in the UC for themselves, PAC would have had to submit a Request for Space.

Suvajac confirmed this detail for The Ontarion via email correspondence, explaining that the PAC’s intention was to submit a formal proposal to the CSA Board of Directors. Having been in communication with the CSA’s policy and transition manager, who has requested their name not be included in this article, Suvajac and the rest of the PAC executive decided that they would present at the September meeting so they would have time to organize and

draft a quality proposal.

At the August board of directors meeting, CSA President Chelsea Mulvale submitted an information item to the board, updating them on the progress of renovations to the space, and requesting direction on how to proceed.

It was ultimately the board of directors’ decision to move forward with the renovations on schedule.

Based on that schedule, and barring any complications, the Photo Arts Club should be able to re-enter their space by Oct. 1 of this year.

According to Mulvale, the PAC has yet to respond regarding health and safety issues that were raised by the contractor regarding the space.

Mulvale said that the CSA has worked diligently to help the Photo Arts Club make the most of their new space. They will have a private entrance from the hallway, one dark room, and modifications have been offered to help make the office space transition into a studio at will.

Mulvale stated that the CSA “is considering all the additional accommodations they can make in order to make sure that the club remains functional,” however PAC members are skeptical as to whether they will be able to maintain their usual functionality in the new space.

THIS AUTUMN, Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) will be holding a leadership election to replace its current federal leader, Tom Mulcair.

Following a crushing defeat in 2015, the NDP seeks to reinvigorate the party and return to its 2011 electoral success, which placed the NDP as Canada’s Official Opposition for the first time in its history.

The challenge for the party will be to find its identity as a left-wing alternative under a majority Liberal government. However, at a time of profound success for underdog politicians like Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn, an opening may have appeared for the NDP. Although the registration deadline was on Aug. 17, NDP members will begin voting online and through the mail on Sept. 18. The results of the first ballot will be announced on Oct. 1, and a new leader will be elected by Oct. 15 at the very latest.

The four candidates running for leadership of the NDP are as follows:

1. Charlie Angus, MP, Timmins — James Bay Angus, a one-time punk rocker, sees Canada’s problems through the lens of a new working class, including the NDP’s blue-collar base and white-collar precarious workers.

2. Niki Ashton, MP, Churchill — Keewatinook Aski A sht on, who r e c eive d a n endorsement from the N DP Socialist Caucus, proposes to eliminate postsecondary tuition fees. Ashton’s vision for the NDP recognizes grassroots activism as the party’s lifeblood.

3. Guy Caron, MP, Rimouski — Neigette — Témiscouata — Les Basques Caron, a native Quebecer, offers victory through his home province, just as in the 2011 election cycle. Caron is the only candidate to propose a universal basic income policy.

4. Jagmeet Singh, MPP, Bramalea — Gore — Malton Singh of fers N DP vic tor y through the growth of a more inclusive party. Singh hopes to build support in southern Ontario, having signed up 47,000 new members to the NDP, many from Toronto and Hamilton.

Gryphons defeat Lancers 82-10 during O-Week game | THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH Gryphons won their first game on Saturday, Sept. 9 after an 0-2 start to their season. The Gryphons dominated the stats, and won in impressive fashion scoring ten touchdowns. “[The win] feels good, but we’ve been knocking on that door for the last two weeks. We’ve been playing good football, but it’s nice to put it all together,” said Kevin MacNeill, head coach of the Gryphons.

Lancers freshman quarterback Colton Allen started the game and was shutdown after a quick 16-0 start for the Gryphons.

Gryphons quarterback James Roberts threw for a convincing 302 yards in the first half alone, while completing the first 12 of his throws before a single incompletion.

Jacob Scarfone, Gryphons slotback, continued to be a reliable option hauling in six receptions for 89 yards with a touchdown.

The Gryphons dual-headed backfield gave the Gryphons two options in the power running of Johnny Augustine and the breakout speed of Jamal Hooker. The two players combined for 141 yards and four touchdowns giving dynamism to the Gryphons backfield.

The Gryphons were up 53-3 allowing the backend of the roster to have some playing time during the second half. “[It’s] great to see our third string quarterback and fourth string running back get in there.

And absolutely we were able to get a lot of guys on the field and so it’s a nice way to reward some guys for their work,” MacNeill said.

The Gryphons hope to advance their record to an even 2-2 in their next game against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues this Saturday, Sept. 16 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto.

The Gryphons (3-2-1) team point streak is finally broken after falling to the Brock Badgers 1-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex last Friday, Sept. 8.

An early goal broke the Gryphons’ shutout streak that lasted over 370 minutes of game time.

Brock midfielder Cassandra Stirpe scored a goal in the 11th minute, which was never answered.

Brooke Davidson, rookie goalkeeper for the Gryphons, made her first career OUA start after head coach Shayne Campbell’s decision to rest last week’s OUA female athlete of the week, Libby Brenneman.

“I think she’ll grow from this experience.

Libby has had a fantastic week, but it was important to give Brooke some OUA time,” said Campbell.

“They defended resolutely. I felt we built up well, but I don’t think our final ball was where it needed to be,” Campbell added.

The Gryphons unfortunately could not bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 10 and fell to the McMaster Marauders 2-0. The Gryphons will face the Algoma Thunderbirds this Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie and will try to improve their record to four wins.

The men’s (4-1-1) result was similar to the women’s except they scored early and let strong defensive play and counterattack pressure secure victory.

Johnson Amoo scored a quick goal in the fifth minute, giving the Gryphons a lead that would not be encroached upon. Freshman goalkeeper Erik Hermanns made three saves, including an important early one, which gave Guelph its first clean sheet of the OUA season.

“It wasn’t an easy clean sheet, but a lot of the saves he had to make were from a distance,” said Keith Mason, head coach of the Gryphons. “What I liked today was that he commanded his box well and he commanded his defense well.”

The win gave the Gryphons a vital three points and progressed them to the top of the Western standings with 13 points.

Unfortunately, the Gryphons could not follow it up on Sunday, Sept. 10 as they fell to the McMaster Marauders 4-2.

The Marauders now sit on the Gryphons’ heels with 12 points as the Gryphons prepare for the Algoma Thunderbirds this weekend for double header games on Saturday and Sunday in the Sault.

“JUST EXCEL” WITH ZEPH FRASER — it’s motivation.

Fraser took his offseasons to train with professional football players like Edmonton Eskimos receivers Natey Adjei and Andrew Johnson.

“Everybody had that mentality, that expectation of going pro; that just rubbed off on me,” he said.

On-field training with professionals gave Fraser the expertise, while the two-a-days gave him the athleticism to compete as an elite U Sports athlete.

But, his true motivation came from family.

Fraser’s parents told him, “Pick

something and if you really like it then excel in it.”

The words resonated, even with me, when he reiterated: “Just excel.”

and he pulled me aside, and told me that he would rather have any other keeper, house league keeper, the worst keeper in the league than me that game,” Brenneman said.

Brenneman chose to leave the abuse and encountered nurturing coaches who developed her game.

While she played Rep B soccer the former Gryphons head coach, Randy Ragan, scouted and recruited Libby to play U Sports for U of G.

“I went from first year not being able to kick a ball barely as a goal kick to getting it close to the other team’s 18 [yard box] now,” Brenneman said.

The power she has now comes from the strength and conditioning training Brenneman undertook after a major back injury in second year.

ON the injury Brenneman’s major injury was also her first. Pain surged through her back at every dive and save.

The physical pain is not merely pain for an athlete: it’s a reminder of a finality, of confronting life after sport.

“I wasn’t sure about playing, I wasn’t sure about anything,” Brenneman said.

She continued to speak to her parents, about life after sport, about law school (Brenneman’s ambitions off the field), and about continuing to play while risking a possible life-long injury.

She spent three to four months in existential limbo: academics or athletics. She could not choose, so she reconciled.

“The coaches [at Mississauga] helped me progress,” Fraser said.

“Then I wanted to get really serious. I went over to Champlain College in Quebec.”

At Champlain, Fraser developed under his current offensive coordinator, Jean-Francois Joncas.

ON becoming a Gryphon Originally, Fraser intended to enter straight into the U of G program. Unfortunately, things did not work out grade-wise, so Fraser matured in the CJFL while attending Sheridan College to raise his grades, averaging 83 yards per game and scoring 11 touchdowns.

Heads turned and Zeph signed with the Laurier Golden Hawks.

His stint with Laurier only lasted a year before he transferred to the Gryphons: it simply “wasn’t the right fit there.”

Kevin MacNeill, the Gryphons head coach noted that all of Fraser’s “ups and downs … helped him mature, and he’s a much more focused guy [because of it].”

Fraser now has his eyes set on the Vanier cup, but tells me about making it to the League. I asked him, which one?

“CFL, NFL, anything. That’s the goal. Just gotta keep working,” said Fraser.

ON origins Before Zeph Fraser was an elite wide receiver he was in grade three playing defensive line.

“I hated it. I told my parents I wanted to quit,” Fraser said. And he did.

It was not until Fraser saw the movie Friday Night Lights that he felt the glory of football. Fraser was no Boobie Miles, though, and at the start of his career he was “terrible at receiver.”

He continued to play high school football in tandem with the Mississauga Warriors, catching some balls

“THE COMEBACK” WITH LIBBY BRENNEMAN ON origins Elizabeth (Libby) Brenneman skipped Timbits soccer and opted for gymnastics and figure skating before her meet cute with the soccer pitch at age eight.

It only took one season for Libby’s coach in the small town of Baden, Ont. to insist that Brenneman go to the city (Kitchener-Waterloo) to play for the competitive U9 team and beyond.

Like most athletes, this did not come without hardships, and for Libby it was a demoralizing coach during Rep A soccer.

“After a game, [...] (we lost 3-0),

“My parents call it the comeback. I want to play every single game [in my third year] that’s what my theory was,” Brenneman said.

“So I worked with our strength and conditioning coaches. I went to the gym. I ran.”

Now, Brenneman starts her fourth year with a four-game shutout streak, leading her team to the top of the OUA West division.

One act play festival showcases new student work | LAST WEEKEND, the Drama Student Federation presented their annual O-Week One Act Play Festival. The festival ran from Thursday to Saturday night and each night included the same three student-written plays.

According to Drama Student Federation vice-president Kenny Grenier, the O-Weeks — and their winter semester analogue, the Sno-Weeks — are what theatre at Guelph is all about.

“They represent what our program stands for. It is by students for students. When you come and

see an O-Week, when you come and see a Sno-Week, you are seeing our program at its rawest,” said Grenier.

Raw is right: most of these short works are rehearsed and staged in around a week’s time. “You are seeing what we can do when we start with very little and we build from there,” Grenier added.

With so little time to prepare, it’s no surprise that some of the staging is awkward and some of the performances are shaky. But there are always diamonds in the rough, like the performances of

Abby Buchan, Alexa Vermey, and Adam Newton, which gave The Door real impact despite its cheesy premise. Another standout was the heady yet sophisticated script of Martin Washburn’s The Best Man,

which also featured a killer comedic turn by Amy Zhang.

The process’s brevity also lowers the stakes, encouraging students to take on a role they’re uncomfortable with. Judging by the many

students loitering in the aisles at intermission, goading each other to submit scripts for the next festival, theatre students have got lots to say, and the O-Weeks are a good way to say it.

The Boo Radley Project brings high energy to DSTRCT CORBEN G R ANT

THE BOO RADLEY PROJECT’S unique energy never fails to satisfy those seeking a fresh and exciting live experience, and their most recent show at DSTRCT was no exception. The local band was joined by Toronto’s Glass Cactus and London’s Lost in Japan, a combination of high-energy acts perfect for dancing away your back-to-school melancholy.

Following the release of their years-in-the-making first album Bred to Be Loyal, the band has been touching down on stages across the province on a weekly basis.

This summer marked their fifth year performing at Riverfest Elora, placing them on the same bill as acclaimed Canadian artists like Mother Mother and Monster Truck.

The Boo’s live lineup is constantly changing, at times playing as a stripped-down three piece, and other times filling the stage with performers. Despite their rotating cast of characters, the band seamlessly adapts their own arrangements and selects covers to perfectly highlight the strengths of Sept. 7’s lineup.

T

his past Sunday, Canada’s best authors read from and signed copies of their works in the idyllic township of Eden Mills, a short drive outside of Guelph. Shuttle busses carried Guelphites to the festival from downtown and from campus. One of Guelph’s Fab 5 Festivals, the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival Sunday is a unique experience and one that students interested in literature should check out in coming years.

Throughout the day, The Ontarion spoke to many of the writers on hand about writing, life, advice for students, and the festival itself. Here’s a selection of what they had to say.

The strumbellas welcome Gryphons “Home Sweet Home”

CONCERT MARKS END OF O-WEEK AND START OF SCHOOL YEAR| FIONA CASHELL ON SATURDAY, Sept. 9, O-Week was brought to a close with a concert headlined

by The Strumbellas. In addition to welcoming first-year students to Guelph, the concert also attracted upper-year students and members of the Guelph community.

The concert was held in Peter Clark Hall, where a diverse array of students came out to enjoy the show. The smaller space leant itself to a more intimate atmosphere, and though not everyone knew every song, spirits were high throughout the concert.

The opening band, The Belle Game, played tracks from their newest album, which dropped the day before the concert.

Andrea Lo’s mix of soft singing and soulful belting added a dreamlike atmosphere to the band’s set.

Although The Strumbellas hail from Lindsay, Ont., they revealed that they have connections to Guelph as well. Bassist Darryl

James attended the University, as did the brothers of lead singer Simon Ward. The band also remarked that the first festival they played was Riverfest Elora. They definitely knew how to work the crowd, pushing the audience to get louder by saying, “I’m pretty sure Western did better than that.”

While many in the audience were most familiar with the hit song “Spirits,” the band managed to entertain throughout the night.

They entered the crowd for an unplugged set, bringing the room to silence so that everyone could lean in and listen. The band also showed off its multitalented members, as in the song “Rhinestones,” where violinist Izzy Ritchie took over vocal duties from Ward.

Overall, the concert created an opportunity for members of the Guelph community old and new to come together and celebrate the beginning of another school year, and many left with smiles on their faces.

Seven things you should know before renting a place A STUDENT GUIDE TO RENTERS’ RIGHTS | MAT THE W WATERSON WHEN RENTING a house or apartment there are many factors involved, such as price, location, and layout. With so much to consider it is no wonder renting a place can be a challenge. Here are seven things you should be aware of before you become a student renter.

1. Landlord usage If a landlord wants to use a unit privately or for a family member or caregiver, the landlord must either give the tenant at least one month’s notice or give them another unit for the duration of the time.

2. Housekeeping This might be common knowledge, but while living in a rented unit, the landlord is responsible for maintenance of the property.

responsibility of keeping the place clean.

3. Moving out Whether you are moving out suddenly or in a couple of months, it is imperative for you to give your landlord 60 days’ notice.

6. Written leases Ask your landlord for a written lease, but make sure that you understand it before signing it.

4. Pet policy If you are renting a room in a house or an apartment, landlords cannot ban pets or guests. The exception is if the tenant is renting a condo, which means they have to follow any rules laid out under the Condominium Act.

7. Documents Whenever you share information with a landlord — whether personal or financial — keep a copy of those documents, just in case.

5. Tenants rights and responsibilities It is always a good idea for you as a renter to have a comprehensive knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of a tenant, so that you don’t violate any rules

THOSE OF YOU starting your first year of university are probably relishing the new freedoms of being away from home. To quote William Wallace from Braveheart, you are probably thinking: “Freeedddooommm!”

How could you not be excited?

For the first time in your life, you are totally autonomous. You are now learning to deal with life on your own, and the focal point of your life is most likely school.

That is the problem with freedom: it comes at a price.

It is very easy to get caught up in the freedom of university and forget that you have responsibilities, especially since your parents and teachers aren’t reminding you to keep your eye on the ball.

Since no one is hounding you to do work it may feel like you don’t have any. What a great feeling, right? Well, it may not be so great when you forget to do an assignment, sleep in too late and miss an important class, or show up to your midterm a little too hungover (Aggie pub can be rough for some people).

However, if any of these things happen to you, don’t worry! We’ve all been there. Finding the balance between fun and school is nothing short of a momentous task.

How do you decide between going out and partying or staying

in and studying? Truth be told, there is no easy answer to that question and each person varies with regards to how much they can handle.

Some simple advice: try and remember that school should always come first — even if we all pretend it doesn’t sometimes — and that you have limitations.

Saying no to a night out may seem like the worst choice in the world, but it can also pay off big time when it comes to your academic career.

It’s easy to let the independence of moving out go your head by partying too much and spending too much money but not spending enough time taking care of yourself.

I am by no means the arbiter of perfect university behaviour, but I do know that it’s important to make tough decisions occasionally, especially regarding how you spend your time at university.

The freedom of university is amazing: you can be a whole new person, make all new friends, and be exactly who you want to be. However, that often means you have to try and make more “adult” decisions. I know, what a drag.

Independence is one of the best parts of university, but finding a balance will definitely make your university career much more enjoyable. I hope you find yours.

Naomi Klein says kill your inner Trump | THIS SATURDAY, celebrated author and activist Naomi Klein appeared at War Memorial Hall for a reading and talk as part of the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival.

In June, in a direct response to Donald Trump’s election, Klein published her fifth book, No is Not Enough: Resisting the New Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need.

“I had a greater sense of urgency than with any of my other books,” said Klein, on the rapidity with which she released No is Not Enough following the election. “It was coming from a place of fear. I felt like I couldn’t waste a minute. I wanted the book to come out before an external shock [distracted us from Trump],” said Klein.

The afternoon began with a blessing and song of welcome from Jan Sherman, a local Anishinaabe storyteller representing Canada’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples. Journalist Tanya Talaga of the Toronto Star then introduced Naomi Klein who read, in what was apparently a last-minute decision, not from her new book, but from an essay published on The Intercept that day, “Season of Smoke.”

Klein and Talaga then engaged in a ranging, congenial discussion of Klein’s new book and her experience at the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline on Standing Rock Sioux reservation, among other things. Klein and Talaga are old friends, having worked at the U

of T student newspaper The Varsity back in the day, and it showed.

While Klein and Talaga’s conversation stayed friendly and subdued, the Q & A that followed got pretty weird. One questioner asked whether Klein thought the many natural disasters of recent months have been part of a U.S. military operation targeting Cuba.

To paraphrase Klein’s answer: No, definitely not, not even a little bit.

And, in a memorable moment, a member of Fossil Free Guelph asked Klein how to beat the University administration’s bureaucratic jiujitsu — while U of G President Franco Vaccarino sat in the front row. Klein gave a diplomatic answer, sidestepping the question while offering anecdotes from her own student activist days by way of encouragement.

While Klein can be forgiven for declining to deride the University hosting her talk, and Talaga can be forgiven for tossing her old friend some soft questions, the civil tone of the event should serve as a reminder: No is not enough — and neither is attending a talk at War Memorial Hall. The real work is yet to be done.

Our situation

Imagine the planet was a dry, inhospitable desert with no life.

Now imagine there was a teeny, tiny area filled with lakes, forests, animals, green grass, and flowers. This was the only place where humans could live and thrive; everything outside of it would mean certain death. Now imagine people started to destroy this oasis: poisoning the water, tearing down forests, and polluting the air.

What would the people who live in this oasis do? How would they feel about people destroying their only refuge?

Outside our planet, we are surrounded by infinite amounts of dark, lifeless space, and inhospitable planets, yet we live here on our little oasis, surrounded by oceans, tall mountains, lush forests, and green grasslands, all teeming with life. It is easy to forget that we are all on a tiny planet, in the middle

of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but lifeless, freezing space. It is easy to forget where we really are, since we see the sun rise, and hear the birds sing in the morning, and think that all is well.

Environment vs. Economy

The argument of environment versus economy is one that always succeeds in raising the hairs on my neck, and it is indeed a false dichotomy (i.e., a false, forced choice between two things). These two concepts are not mutually exclusive. We can, and will, have a healthy environment coupled with a strong economy and job growth.

In fact, it’s already happening in the green energy sector. Furthermore, how can the economy ever be more important than the environment, which we rely on (and that the economy relies heavily on as well)? How can a theoretical concept be more important than

groundwork for his victory was laid long before he took to the podium to announce his candidacy.

Trump is not an alien. “He’s us,” said Klein, pointing to the rise of brand marketing (which she previously criticized in her 2000 book No Logo) at which Trump excels.

Trump “is a master of these various genres [of] fake reality,” said Klein, including political melodrama.

No is not enough Throughout Klein’s talk, certain motifs highlighted the urgency of humanity’s situation: the wreckage left in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, the smoke billowing from wildfires across North America, and the Great Barrier Reef, slowly bleaching in warming seas. Klein shared a recent experience seeing the giant sequoias of the west coast narrowly escape incineration. “The wonders of the world are disappearing on our watch,” Klein said.

Talaga put it bluntly: “How cooked are we?”

Klein’s response was hopeful, but she stressed that it’s not enough to sit around and worry. “We have to get off spectator mode. We have to get off virtual mode. We have to get face to face. We have to get into rooms full of people.”

There is hope The talk was not without a vision of how things might change. One such vision came in a discussion of the Leap Manifesto Klein helped

things that really scares me about the current situation is the sense that the way the media and our social lives work these days combines with our brain chemistry to make it inevitable that we would turn to sensationalism. What do you think that students can do on a day-to-day, habitual level to steel themselves against shock politics?

Naomi Klein: I don’t think it’s just a question for young people. I think many of us who didn’t grow up with these technologies have become addicted to them late in life, including me.

I [fight] it with other technologies. I use Freedom — this is the only product I do product plugs for. It’s a little thing you can get to block the internet on your computer and phone.

the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat?

Policy makers and politicians of all stripes need to take a pro-environment stance. They must also be brave in making decisions that may not be popular with either climate change deniers or hard-line conservatives.

In fact, the whole idea of conservatives naturally being against environmentalism (if it affects jobs or economy) is fundamentally misguided. In a piece for The Guardian, Paul Foote, director of the Conservative Environment Network wrote that “the long political and philosophical heritage of environmentalism is in essence, conservative rather than radical.”

So it is not that far-fetched to think of environmentalism as an inherently conservative idea, although U.S. conservatives have certainly rejected that notion.

T he O nt a r io g o v er n me nt recently raised around $504 million in proceeds from a capand-trade auction sale, which by law must be invested in programs that will reduce greenhouse gas pollution. This includes things like building public electric vehicle charging stations and

prov iding homeow ners w ith rebates for installing high-efficiency retrofits.

Whether or not cap and trade is the best system to manage our emissions, the point remains the same: we must take action now to reduce our emissions and convert to a green economy.

The shift to green is already underway, and there is no stopping it now. In 2016, the price of solar energy was equal to or lower than energy produced using fossil fuels.

This is due to advances in technology and government subsidies.

But don’t cry foul over government subsidies so quickly — oil and gas companies still receive government subsidies, even in years of record profit, according to a ThinkProgress piece. This is an example of how the environment and economy can, and do, work in harmony.

Developing the green energy and green technology sector will create new types of jobs and sustainable, clean energy that we can use as long as we still have a sun. There are also countless new technologies being developed that aim to make our world more green and sustainable, all of which will create new

The Ontarion had the chance to ask one question of Naomi Klein. We wanted to ask something students might find useful. (Editor’s Note: The following has been edited for clarity and length.)

Will Wellington: One of the

I think you have to put yourself on a media diet. You have to to free yourself from the non-stopness of it. I don’t have Twitter on my phone. I don’t have any social media on my phone. When I’m writing and trying to do work, I put on Freedom so that I can think. Everybody needs breaks from constant input.

But I’m really struck actually by the fact that it is young people who are showing the most appetite for the less celebrity-driven, more substantive politics. It was millenials who powered Bernie Sanders’ campaign. It was millenials who powered Jeremy Corbyn’s electoral upset in the U.K. And in both of these cases the appeal of these figures is that they are not celebrity-branded, focus-groupedto-death political figures and are trusted because of it.

There’s something interesting going on in your generation that I’m sure you understand better than me.

Analogy

T he p oint of t he a na log y between the hypothetical oasis and the Earth is that we must never forget how lucky we are to be here, on the only known oasis in the universe. Some people in the corporate world think that infinite economic growth is possible on a finite planet with finite resources.

We know that this is not the case.

There has to be a balance between the environment and economy, but it must be one that always ensures our planet is clean and safe from climate change, pollution, and species degradation. Everything else must be built around this fundamental premise.

We must now leave it to engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, governments, and businesses to lead the way in creating this balance; but, it starts with the average person realizing how special their oasis is and doing anything they can to protect it.

I

need a Match.com for major life decisions. I want to fill in my information, and then I want the system to spew out options that are going to be right for me.

I strutted into the fall of my first year of university wearing a stylish, thick-rimmed pair of rose-coloured glasses. I was optimistic, perhaps idealistic, about the adventure that was laid out before me. I made a split-second decision, right before I graduated from high school, to ditch biology for political science, and I had my mind set on law school. I may have changed the plan pretty drastically, but at least I had a plan.

If you know me now, you know that while politics is the only place for me, the idea of law school gives me some serious commitment-phobia.

Every fall since my first year, I’ve come back just a little less idealistic, knowing that I no longer have a plan set in stone. Normally, fall is the time of year where I look ahead, and the end is just far enough out of sight that I don’t have to make any major decisions. I’ve planned and unplanned my future a hundred times, like a letter I keep writing out only to erase it again: I can still see where the words used to be, but it’s impossible to make sense of them.

And for the first three years that was fine. I could sleep soundly knowing that I had ample time to test the waters and figure out where I fit best.

But what happens when you don’t have that kind of time anymore?

It’s a frightening place to be. I’m being chased to the finish line and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do once I get there.

Three years in and what do I have to show for it? I have a fairly impressive resume, a hefty writing portfolio, $30,000 in debt, and a few more stamps in my passport.

What I do not have is a plan.

I’ve been lucky enough over the last few years, to discover a lot of new things that I’m interested in. I’ve become a bit of a student journalist, I’ve volunteered on a handful of political campaigns, and I’ve dipped my toe into academic research. Looking at my situation from an outsider’s perspective, this is great news; I have options.

Options and I, however, have never gotten along very well. I have a very serious problem with indecision. It is the reason I stand at the ice cream counter for 15 minutes before picking a flavour. And it’s the reason my friends pick a restaurant without consulting me. I wouldn’t offer much help anyway.

This semester, I’ve reached the point in my life where my indecision

is starting to stress me the hell out.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way. There’s pressure on young people to know where we’re headed. How many times have you been asked about your plans after graduation? I’ve gotten used to telling people, “Oh, I’m probably going to go on and do my Masters.”

But sometimes I think back on my answer and wonder, am I telling people that because it’s what I want to do, or because I think it’s what they want to hear?

When people ask if I’ve ruled out law school, I usually tell them no.

It seems like the right answer. It’s a pretty prestigious job. Lawyers make a lot of money. I’m in political science. Easy call, right?

A resume, a portfolio, a loan, and a full passport. I said earlier that this is all I have to show for three years of a university education.

I’ll admit I may have jumped the gun a bit on that. I also learned a lot about myself. For one thing, I learned that I get bored very easily.

So, the worst thing I could do to my future self, would be to get stuck doing something I don’t feel passionate about.

When I made the last-minute decision to forgo a future in science

for a future in politics, I didn’t know if it was going to be the best or worst decision I ever made. I still don’t know, to be honest.

I excelled in science. Math too.

But I realized, almost too late, that I didn’t love it. I was taking the courses because I was succeeding.

And obviously when you succeed at something, you move on to the next level. But in that case, I didn’t love the game I was playing.

I think this can happen to students too easily. We put ourselves on a path based on the information we have at the time, and when we come to a crossroads, we keep moving forward. It’s the logical thing to do.

Why turn left when we could more easily move straight?

Why take the harder route if we don’t have to?

For some of us, the straight course is right. The plan you’ve had for yourself all along still lights a fire inside of you.

For some of us, it doesn’t.

My plan coming into university was to go to law school. But I’m finding myself in the same situation I was in about three years ago. When I picture my future, nowhere in it am I pouring over case notes. Nowhere in it am I yelling, “I object!” What I’ve realized over the past three years is that the law doesn’t excite me.

But thanks to some of the learning I’ve done outside of the lecture hall, I think I know what does... and you just finished reading it. @Ontarion_News
