Hoje lembrei-me de um assunto que não se vê muito exposto, mas que faz parte, ou deveria fazer, da energia positiva que todos nós, enquanto empreendedores, precisamos de receber!

O apoio do nosso círculo de amigos próximos daqueles que estão connosco para o que der e vier - é imprescindível quando estamos a começar uma aventura na qual estamos 100% envolvidos e na qual entramos carregados de ambição para que ela siga forte.

Este apoio, que pode ser fornecido de tantas maneiras, até por um telefonema ou por uma palavra que não permita a desistência, pode fazer mesmo toda a diferença, principalmente nos tempos cada vez mais desafiantes que estamos a viver.

Se tens um amigo que está a começar um negócio, a desenvolver uma ideia ou a lutar diariamente para que o seu projeto vingue, lembra-te de oferecer todo o apoio possível, porque, garanto-te, ele nunca se esquecerá de quem lhe deu a mão.

Além disso, ele vai sentir que aquele projeto ou aquele negócio, que efetivamente é dele, é também um bocadinho de todos aqueles que lhe puseram um sorriso na cara nos dias mais difíceis e o puxaram para a realidade de ter de continuar.

Este auxílio não deve ser dado apenas quando o teu amigo lança a ideia ou te diz que vai iniciar o projeto, mas acima de tudo deve ser dado quando o projeto já está efetivamente em execução, principalmente na sua fase de arranque.

Today I remembered a subject that doesn’t get much exposure, but which is part, or should be part, of the positive energy that all of us as entrepreneurs need to receive!

The support of our close circle of friends - those who are always by our side - is indispensable when we are starting a journey in which we are 100% involved, and into which we enter charged with the ambition to keep it going strong.

This support, which can be provided in so many ways, even by a phone call or a word that doesn’t allow us to give up, can make all the difference, especially in the increasingly challenging times we are living through.

If you have a friend who is starting a business, developing an idea, or struggling daily to make his project succeed, remember to offer all the support you can, because I guarantee you, he will never forget who gave him a hand.

Moreover, he will feel that that project or that business, which is effectively his, is also a little bit of all those who put a smile on his face in the most difficult days and pulled him to the reality of having to continue.

This help should not only be given when your friend launches the idea or tells you that he is going to start the project but above all, it should be given when the project is already running, especially in its start-up phase.

Divulgar o seu trabalho a outros amigos, à família, aos colegas de trabalho, pode ser uma boa maneira de começar a ajudar.

O mesmo efeito terá se resolveres seguir as redes sociais desse projeto, comentar os seus posts ou simplesmente convidar amigos a gostar dessas páginas. Isso ajuda a alavancar o desempenho dos posts e faz com que cheguem a um número maior de pessoas e, posteriormente, o sucesso aconteça.

Se o teu amigo empreendedor realizar algum evento para divulgação e promoção do seu trabalho, comparece. A tua presença, o teu encorajamento dar-lhe-ão forças.

Outra coisa muito importante: o teu amigo está a desenvolver um negócio, lembra-te disso!

Desenvolvê-lo e colocá-lo em prática implica custos, muito investimento, um risco enorme associado.

Uma das grandes ajudas que podes fornecer é, em vez de lhe pedires descontos ou bónus pelo facto de seres próximo dele, compra o seu produto, vai ao seu restaurante, encomenda os seus serviços.

Sempre que puderes, consome aquilo que o teu amigo, a muito custo, quer fazer vingar no mercado.

E nunca te esqueças: um dia, esse produto, esse negócio, será também emocionalmente teu, porque tu fizeste parte, de uma forma muito positiva, do seu crescimento. Afinal, para que servem os amigos?

Spreading the word about his work to other friends, family, co-workers, can be a good way to start helping.

It will have the same effect if you decide to follow the social networks of that project, comment on its posts, or simply invite friends to like those pages.

This helps leverage the performance of the posts and makes them reach a larger number of people, and subsequently, success happens.

If your entrepreneurial friend holds some event to publicize and promote his work, attend.

Your presence, your encouragement will give him strength.

Another very important thing: your friend is developing a business, remember that! Developing it and putting it into practice implies costs, a lot of investment, a huge risk associated.

One of the biggest helps you can provide is, instead of asking him for discounts or a bonus for being close to him, buy his product, go to his restaurant, order his services.

Whenever you can, consume what your friend, at great cost, is trying to get on the market.

And never forget: one day, that product, that business, will also be emotionally yours, because you were part, in a very positive way, of its growth. After all, what are friends for?

Free Electrons. EDP abre candidaturas para competição de startups de energia Já estão abertas as candidaturas para a edição de 2021 do Free Electrons, uma competição organizada pela EDP que distingue as «mais promissoras startups de energia».

As inscrições estão abertas até 29 de março e a final acontece em Novembro: a startup vencedora recebe um prémio de duzentos mil dólares (cerca de 165 mil euros).

Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Business Angels Partner e Fundador da Toplever

13 João Trigo da Roza, o Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Business Angels (APBA), é um nome incontornável da evolução do ecossistema empreendedor em Portugal, conhecendo-o de uma forma muito próxima e apaixonada.

Com mais de três décadas de atividade profissional, conhece profundamente vários sectores da economia, tendo uma experiência diversificada na qualidade de gestor e consultor de empresas.

O seu currículo é vasto e dispensa apresentações, mas podemos destacar as funções de Partner e Fundador da Toplever, Vice-presidente do Business Angels Europe (BAE), manager na McKinsey, Partner da ATKearney, Presidente da Comissão Executiva da PT Multimédia.com, Presidente da Telepac, Presidente do portal Sapo, administrador da PT Ventures, administrador da Parque Expo Promoção e Desenvolvimento Imobiliário (Expo 98).

Tem em ser Business Angel um gosto enorme e confirma que lá fora a evolução das startups em Portugal se encontra muito bem posicionada e elogiada pelas bocas do mundo.

João Trigo da Roza, the President of the Portuguese Association of Business Angels (APBA), is an inescapable name in the evolution of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Portugal, knowing it in a very close and passionate way.

With more than three decades of professional activity, he knows deeply several sectors of the economy, having a diversified experience as a business manager and consultant.

His curriculum is vast and needs no introduction, but we can highlight the functions of Partner and Founder of Toplever, Vice-president of Business Angels Europe (BAE), manager at McKinsey, Partner at ATKearney, President of the Executive Committee of PT Multimédia.com, President of Telepac, President of the Sapo portal, director of PT Ventures, director of Parque Expo Promoção e Desenvolvimento Imobiliário (Expo 98). He has an enormous pleasure in being a Business Angel and confirms that outside Portugal the evolution of portuguese startups is very well positioned and praised all over the world.

“O meu avô paterno foi um empreendedor de referência, em Hong Kong no século passado, e o meu pai também”

“My paternal grandfather was a leading entrepreneur, in Hong Kong in the last century, and so was my father” Depois de iniciar a sua carreira, e sendo já professor universitário, desafiou-se a si próprio e tornou-se empreendedor. Como é que tomou esta decisão?

Eu nasço numa família de empreendedores, o meu avô paterno foi um empreendedor de referência em Hong Kong, no século passado e o meu pai também, na área da engenharia, por isso sempre me vi bastante autónomo e com capacidade de iniciativa.

Sou engenheiro civil de primeira formação, trabalhei até numa empresa familiar nessa área.

After starting your career, and being a university professor, you challenged yourself and became an entrepreneur. How did you take this decision?

I was born in a family of entrepreneurs, my paternal grandfather was a leading entrepreneur in Hong Kong, in the last century, and so was my father, in the engineering area, so I always saw myself as quite autonomous and with a capacity for initiative. I am a civil engineer by first training, and I even worked in a family company in that area.

14 Depois, mais tarde, resolvi fazer um MBA e isso despertou-me para toda uma novidade, que era a área de gestão, que para mim trazia ferramentas profissionais e possibilidades de desenvolvimento pessoal muito interessantes. E aí passei uma parte da minha vida a ser consultor, trabalhei na McKinsey, e acabei por ter mais tarde funções executivas na área das telecomunicações, onde fui CEO de várias empresas.

A partir de determinada altura, talvez porque este ‘bichinho’ de ser empreendedor nunca se perde, achei que tinha de montar o meu próprio negócio. Hoje sou partner e fundador de uma firma chamada Toplever, que é uma empresa que apoia, normalmente, grandes empresas na sua estratégia de crescimento, ou ajuda também a promover investimentos em diversos setores, estando por isso envolvida em processos de M&A. Em paralelo, por ter passado nas telecomunicações ali nos anos 2000, apercebi-me de que havia um mundo de empreendedorismo – as chamadas startups – que era uma forma de estar diferente do empreendedorismo tradicional.

E é aí que decido fundar a Associação Portuguesa de Business Angels (APBA) e, ao mesmo tempo, começar a ser investidor em startups. Nessa altura começo a aproximar-me do chamado early stage, eu que vinha e ainda hoje estou mais ligado ao mundo das grandes empresas, acabei por acompanhar muitas destas empresas nascentes, que é uma coisa que a mim me dá um gozo especial e que eu gosto muito de fazer na qualidade de Business Angel.

Then, later on, I decided to take an MBA, and that awakened me to a whole new area, which was management, which for me brought very interesting professional tools and possibilities for personal development. And then I spent part of my life as a consultant, I worked at McKinsey, and later I ended up in an executive position in the telecommunications area, where I was CEO of several companies.

From a certain point on, maybe because this will to be an entrepreneur is never lost, I thought I had to set up my own business. Today I’m a partner and founder of a firm called Toplever, which is a company that usually supports large companies in their growth strategy, or also helps to promote investments in various sectors, and is therefore involved in M&A processes. In parallel, having spent time in telecommunications there in the 2000s, I realized that there was a world of entrepreneurship - the so-called startups - that had a different positioning than traditional entrepreneurship.

And that’s when I decide to found the Portuguese Business Angels Association (APBA) and, at the same time, start being an investor in startups. At that time I start to get closer to the so-called early stage, I, who was and still am more connected to the world of large companies, ended up accompanying many of these nascent companies, which is something that gives me special pleasure and that I enjoy doing as a Business Angel.

15 O ser professor também é uma circunstância.

Quando comecei como engenheiro, era docente na Universidade, era bom aluno e por isso dava aulas e fazia investigação no Técnico. Depois, para seguir a carreira da McKinsey, tive de me afastar da docência na Universidade. Mais tarde, recentemente, há meia dúzia de anos, a Universidade Católica quis lançar toda esta lógica de apoio a startups e incorporou dentro dos seus mestrados uma oferta de projeto, que na prática é uma aceleração de ideias desenvolvidas pelos alunos. Foi aí que me pediram para ajudar no redesenho do currículo dessa cadeira, por eu ser uma pessoa com experiência prática, porque a minha carreira não é académica.

Sempre participei mais numa lógica de ser convidado e trazer o mundo real para dentro da Universidade.

Being a professor is also a circumstance. When I started as an engineer, I was a professor at the University, I was a good student, so I taught and did research at Técnico. Then, to pursue a career at McKinsey, I had to step away from teaching at the University. Later, recently, half a dozen years ago, the Catholic University wanted to launch this whole logic of support for startups and incorporated within its master’s degrees a project offer, which in practice is an acceleration of ideas developed by students.

That’s when I was asked to help redesign the curriculum of this course because I am a person with practical experience because my career is not academic. I have always participated more in the logic of being invited and bringing the real world inside the University.

Qual é a maior diferença entre estar ligado a estas pequenas empresas e estar ligado às grandes empresas?

A diferença é enorme, é muito grande. São mundos diferentes, as pequenas empresas são muito mais ágeis, com uma capacidade de inovação disruptiva maior, e com uma capacidade de atuação informal bastante maior.

As grandes empresas, porque têm um legado para defender, porque às vezes já estão no limite da fronteira de possibilidades tecnológicas, procuram mais eficiência, racionalidade, processos…, portanto, são mundos muito diferentes.

Ora, eu acho que estes dois mundos se deveriam aproximar. E tem sido um pouco o meu papel, como Business Angel, o de procurar que as pequenas empresas tenham um efeito enzimático junto das grandes empresas, ou seja, que criem agilidade nas grandes empresas através de parcerias que permitam às grandes empresas terem acesso a novas soluções, algumas delas mais disruptivas.

Por outro lado, as pequenas empresas beneficiam muito, porque com essas parcerias têm os primeiros grandes clientes, que são as grandes empresas, que lhes podem dar tração.

Portanto, o promover este casamento entre as grandes empresas e as startups é sem dúvida um papel que os Business Angels podem ter e em Portugal ainda há muito trabalho a fazer.

What is the biggest difference between being connected to these small companies and being connected to the big companies?

The difference is huge, it’s very big. They are different worlds, small companies are much more agile, with a greater capacity for disruptive innovation, and with a much greater capacity for informal action.

Large companies, because they have a legacy to defend because sometimes they are already at the limit of the frontier of technological possibilities, seek more efficiency, rationality, processes..., so they are very different worlds.

Well, I think that these two worlds should come closer together. And it has been a little bit my role, as a Business Angel, to try to get small companies to have an enzymatic effect with big companies, that is, to create agility in big companies through partnerships that allow big companies to have access to new solutions, some of the more disruptive.

On the other hand, small companies benefit a lot, because with these partnerships they have their first big clients, which are the big companies, that can give them traction. Therefore, promoting this marriage between big companies and startups is undoubtedly a role that Business Angels can play and in Portugal, there is still a lot of work to do.

16 O João falou numa coisa que lá fora já começa a ser uma tendência.

Os grandes grupos empresariais, como a Bosch por exemplo, criam eles próprios os seus programas de empreendedorismo, que no fundo ajudam a criar empreendedores e a captar também bons projetos. Em Portugal não se sente muito isto, pois não?

Qual é a sua opinião?

Vamos lá ver, isto é tudo de certa maneira muito relativo, não é? O que é que eu sinto? Quando nós começámos a APBA há coisa de 15 anos, praticamente não havia empresas com esse tipo de posicionamento.

Tirando eventualmente uma Portugal Telecom, que tinha ali à volta do Sapo, um universo de startups que se estavam a desenvolver. E foi uma luta que eu tive, no bom sentido, de procurar sensibilizar as grandes empresas para este tema.

Hoje sinto que é um pouco ao contrário: são as grandes empresas a dirigirem-se a mim pessoalmente e à APBA para perguntarem “o que é que eu posso fazer para estar nesse ecossistema, pois já percebi que vêm daí novidades, numa lógica de open innovation, de abrir portas a novos modelos de negócio?” Portanto, eu acho que há uma evolução brutal no sentido positivo. Agora… se me perguntar “onde é que estamos?” Penso que ainda estamos a meio caminho ou ainda estamos numa fase, em relação a outros países, em que ainda há muito para trilhar. De caminho, foram aparecendo por exemplo uma EDP Ventures, uma Semapa Next, e outras iniciativas de empresas como as da NOS, da Fidelidade e da SONAE, ou do terceiro setor com a Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, que já demonstram uma grande abertura e envolvimento neste ecossistema. Portanto, acho que há uma evolução muito grande, há 15 anos estávamos no deserto, hoje já há umas árvores interessantes a crescer, mas ainda há muito trabalho para fazer (risos).

You mentioned something that is already becoming a trend abroad.

The big business groups, such as Bosch, for example, create their entrepreneurship programs, which help create entrepreneurs and also capture good projects. In Portugal you don’t feel this very much, do you?

What is your opinion?

Let’s see, this is all in a way very relative, isn’t it?

What do I feel? When we started APBA about 15 years ago, there were practically no companies with this kind of positioning. With the possible exception of Portugal Telecom, which was around Sapo, there was a universe of startups that were developing. And it was a struggle that I had, in a good way, to try to make big companies aware of this issue.

Today I feel that it’s a little bit the opposite: it’s the big companies coming to me personally and to APBA to ask “what can I do to be in this ecosystem, because I’ve already realized that new things are coming from there, in a logic of open innovation, of opening doors to new business models?” So, I think there is a brutal evolution in the positive sense. Now... if you ask me “where are we?” I think we’re still halfway there or we’re still at a stage, in relation to other countries, where there’s still a long way to go. Along the way, for example an EDP Ventures, a Semapa Next, and other initiatives from companies such as NOS, Fidelidade and SONAE, or from the third sector with Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, which already show a great openness and involvement in this ecosystem. So, I think there’s been a great evolution, 15 years ago we were in the desert, today there are some interesting trees growing, but there’s still a lot of work to do (laughs).

Há uma coisa que, por exemplo, no Instituto Superior Técnico, tem surpreendido pela positiva. Lá, encontram-se parceiros para desenvolver ideias de projetos, como a Junitec, que é feita de alunos que têm a garra e a energia de quem está a começar. Ao contrário de algumas outras universidades, ali a postura é muito comercial e muito pouco académica…

Sim, a Junitec fez uma evolução grande para ter essa postura mais prática, e é um bom exemplo da evolução grande que as universidades têm tido.

There is one thing that, for example, in the Instituto Superior Técnico, has positively surprised everyone. There, you can find partners to develop project ideas, like Junitec, which is made up of students who have the drive and energy of someone who is just starting out.

Unlike some other universities, there the attitude is very commercial and very little unacademic...

Yes, Junitec has made a great evolution to have this more practical posture, and it is a good example of the great evolution that universities have had.

Mesmo as universidades mais recentes, como as de Braga, Aveiro ou Covilhã, são universidades muito ativas e com empreendedores muito ativos e de elevado potencial.

Portanto, há essa postura de proximidade ao mercado. As universidades têm procurado percorrer esse percurso, ter programas de aceleração, numa ótica de partir da resolução de uma necessidade do mercado, com o apoio da tecnologia e da gestão, apoiando o lançamento de startups…, inclusivamente começa a haver clubes de alumni de algumas destas universidades, que são investidores, como existe nas grandes universidades mundiais, como Harvard, que tive oportunidade de acompanhar quando participei no programa executivo de Private Equity.

Essa atitude das universidades também é muito positiva e pode fazer toda a diferença no futuro da nossa economia.

Even the most recent universities, like Braga, Aveiro, or Covilhã, are very active universities, with very active and high potential entrepreneurs.

So, there is this posture of proximity to the market.

Universities have been trying to follow this path, to have acceleration programs, in a perspective of solving a market need, with the support of technology and management, supporting the launching of startups..., there are even alumni clubs in some of these universities, which are investors, as there are in the great world universities, such as Harvard, which I had the opportunity to follow when I participated in the Private Equity executive program.

This attitude of universities is also very positive and can make all the difference in the future of our economy.

18 Como é que nasce a APBA? A APBA nasce em 2006, portanto, há 15 anos… pela mão de um conjunto de pessoas, que vinham de uma carreira corporate e que acharam, mesmo mantendo-se alguns nessa carreira mais empresarial, em grandes empresas ou multinacionais, que uma forma de contribuir seria criar uma Associação de pessoas que quisessem investir em startups numa lógica não só financeira, mas que nós chamamos smart money, ou seja, de apoiar startups a nascerem, transferindo um bocado o nosso know-how, o nosso conhecimento, o nosso network de negócio para essas empresas.

Nasceu de um grupo de fundadores, depois de uma viagem que fiz aos Estados Unidos e em que, por coincidência, tive oportunidade de conhecer os Business Angels de Nova Iorque, e de visitar a Kauffman Foundation, em Kansas City, que é um think tank ligado ao empreendedorismo, e onde me interroguei: “isto faz sentido em Portugal?”. Lançámos a Associação, que podia ter sido mais uma ideia que não vingaria. O que é facto é que depois de 15 anos cá estamos e acho que a tendência é crescer e poder criar algo maior...

How is APBA born?

APBA was born in 2006, so 15 years ago... by the hand of a group of people who came from a corporate career and who thought, even if some of them remained in that more corporate career, in large companies or multinationals, that a way to contribute would be to create an Association of people who wanted to invest in startups in a logic that was not only financial but that we call smart money, i.e., to support startups to be born, transferring some of our know-how, our knowledge, our business network to these companies.

It was born from a group of founders, after a trip, I made to the United States where, by coincidence, I had the opportunity to meet the Business Angels in New York and visit the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, which is a think tank linked to entrepreneurship, and where I asked myself: “does this make sense in Portugal?” We launched the Association, which could have been just another idea that wouldn’t work. The fact is that after 15 years we are here and I think the trend is to grow and create something bigger...

19 Como é que tem evoluído, ao longo dos últimos 15 anos, o investimento em startups em Portugal?

Primeiro, há a distinguir aqui dois aspetos: um é o deal flow. Quando nós começámos, confesso que o deal flow era um bocado exasperante, apareciam-nos aqui possibilidades de investir em cafés de esquina - com todo o respeito pelos cafés, acho que não era esse o objetivo ou o target que nós queríamos. Nós procurávamos empresas que pudessem escalar e chegar a ser, não sei se unicórnios, mas a ter um foot print global. Uma vez até nos apareceu uma proposta para investir em passes de jogadores de futebol, se calhar não teria sido mau investimento (risos), mas também não era essa a ideia.

How has the investment in startups in Portugal developed over the last 15 years?

First, there are two things to distinguish here: one is the deal flow. When we started out, I confess that the deal flow was a bit exasperating, we saw possibilities of investing in corner cafés - with all respect to cafés, I don’t think that was the goal or the target we wanted. We were looking for companies that could scale and become, I don’t know if unicorns, but have a global foot print. One time we even got an offer to invest in soccer players’ passes, maybe it wouldn’t have been a bad investment (laughs), but that wasn’t the idea either.

“Promoting this marriage between big companies and startups is a role that Business Angels can play” E, portanto, ao princípio foi muito difícil, porque não havia um deal flow qualificado e preparado para falar com os Business Angels. Com o tempo, isso foi aparecendo. Num ecossistema têm de ir surgindo cada uma das suas componentes. Umas até podem estar mais adiantadas do que as outras, mas é importante que elas se vão complementando. Porque se não há startups, não há Business Angels, se não há Business Angels dificilmente haverá startups. Ou seja, é preciso começar por algum lado. Houve também uma série de atores, como as aceleradoras, que a partir de determinada altura, ganharam uma força grande, e ainda bem, pois ajudaram as startups a olhar para os seus projetos de uma forma muito mais profissional, e inclusivamente a prepararem-se para falar com os investidores.

Portanto, acho que o mundo das startups evoluiu muito em Portugal e eu diria que hoje, quando vou a um concurso internacional, onde há startups portuguesas, tipicamente elas ficam muito bem qualificadas e com grandes probabilidades de serem investidas.

And so at first it was very difficult, because there was no deal flow qualified and prepared to talk to the Business Angels. With time, that started to appear. In an ecosystem, each of its components has to emerge. Some may be more advanced than others, but they must complement each other.

Because if there are no startups, there are no Business Angels, and if there are no Business Angels there will be hardly any startups. In other words, you have to start somewhere. There were also several players, such as the accelerators, which after a certain time gained a lot of strength, and that’s a good thing, because they helped startups to look at their projects in a much more professional way, and even to prepare themselves to talk to investors.

So, I think the world of startups has developed a lot in Portugal, and I would say that today, when I go to an international contest, where there are portuguese startups, typically they are very well qualified and with great chances of being invested in.

20 É normal as pessoas darem-me os parabéns, ainda que quem está de parabéns são os empreendedores, e perguntarem-me o que é que se está a passar em Portugal para haver este movimento tão forte de startups tão boas.

O ecossistema nessa parte evoluiu muito bem. Do lado do investimento também, porque ao princípio erámos todos um pouco amadores, fomos aprendendo também por alguma experiência internacional, nomeadamente através de relações internacionais que tivemos, por exemplo com a EBAN (European Business Angels Netwwork) e hoje com o BAE (Business Angels Europe), que nos permitiram durante muitos anos trazer para Portugal boas práticas. Hoje temos formações de âmbito internacional, para as quais contribuímos com melhores práticas, o que tem contribuído para a profissionalização dos Business Angels.

It is normal for people to congratulate me, although it is the entrepreneurs who are to be congratulated, and ask me what is happening in Portugal for there to be such a strong movement of such good startups. The ecosystem in this part has evolved very well.

On the investment side, because in the beginning we were all a bit amateurs, we were also learning through some international experience, namely through international relations we had, for example with EBAN (European Business Angels Network) and today with BAE (Business Angels Europe), which allowed us to bring good practices to Portugal for many years. Today we have trainings of international scope, to which we contribute with best practices, which has contributed to the professionalization of Business Angels.

Como vice-presidente do BAE e com todo o conhecimento além-fronteiras já obtido, pode dizer-nos se o desenvolvimento de Business Angels em Portugal se pode equiparar ao do resto da Europa?

Eu acho que nós fizemos aqui um percurso acelerado, tivemos uma espécie de via verde. Quando eu comecei nestas ligações internacionais há 15 anos, onde estive ligado ao board da EBAN, e hoje na BAE, Portugal era assim uma coisa desconhecida, e eu estava lá numa lógica de ver se conseguia aprender algo. E hoje é um bocado ao contrário, as pessoas olham para Portugal e ainda hoje me dizem “João, porque é que não fazemos o nosso próximo congresso em Portugal, porque cada vez que vamos a Portugal ficamos maravilhados e aprendemos imenso com vocês”. Portugal, sendo um país pequeno face ao Reino Unido, Alemanha ou França ou a Espanha, passou a ser um referencial. Talvez por isso é que também acabo por ser vice-presidente, com o pelouro de estratégia, o que é desproporcional à dimensão do país. Seria mais normal ser a Alemanha ou a França a ter esse pelouro e, se é Portugal, é porque o nosso ecossistema é considerado.

Houve também um evento que contribuiu em muito do ponto de vista da visibilidade, que foi a Web Summit. Do ponto de vista da visibilidade internacional ajudou muito. Há aqui uma série de fatores que fizeram com que Portugal ficasse mais no mapa.

As vice-president of BAE and with all the cross-border knowledge already obtained, can you tell us if the development of Business Angels in Portugal can compare to the rest of Europe?

I think we had an accelerated course here. When I started in these international connections 15 years ago, when I was connected to the EBAN board, and today at BAE, Portugal was something unknown, and I was there to see if I could learn something.

And today it’s a little bit the opposite, people look at Portugal and even today they tell me “João, why don’t we have our next congress in Portugal, because every time we go to Portugal we are amazed and we learn a lot from you”. Portugal, being a small country compared to the United Kingdom, Germany, France or Spain, became a reference. Maybe that’s why I also end up being vice-president, with the strategy portfolio, which is disproportionate to the size of the country. It would be more normal for Germany or France to have this portfolio and, if it’s Portugal, it’s because our ecosystem is considered.

There was also an event that contributed a lot from the visibility point of view, which was the Web Summit. From the point of view of international visibility, it helped a lot. Several factors made Portugal more on the map.

Agora, não podemos descansar sobre os louros, se hoje do ponto de vista das práticas podemos dizer que estamos tão bem quanto o resto da Europa continental, talvez ainda longe do que é o Reino Unido, isto é um comboio em movimento, não é? Porque se ficamos aqui muito confortáveis com o que fizemos, daqui a um ou dois anos estamos ultrapassados. Isso já se nota na evolução do PIB do país em relação a outras economias europeias...

Now, we can’t rest, if today from a practical point of view we can say that we are as good as the rest of continental Europe, maybe even further from the United Kingdom, this is a moving train, isn’t it?

Because if we get too comfortable here with what we have done, in one or two years we will be outdone. This can already be seen in the evolution of the country’s GDP in comparison to other European economies...

E a internacionalização é sempre um desafio, também não é algo que se deva deixar estagnar.

Pois, isso é uma perspetiva importante. Nós, quando investimos, pelo menos na ótica dos Business Angels da APBA, investimos sempre numa lógica de que “Portugal é muito pequeno, vamos fazer a prova de conceito e testar o mercado, mas não faz sentido se não escalarmos ao nível da Europa, ou para um mercado como Estados Unidos ou mesmo a uma China.” E aí, a APBA tem redes que podem ajudar os seus associados nessa internacionalização e as pessoas da própria APBA têm uma postura muito global.

Através da BAE, participamos num clube de coinvestimento internacional, o BAE Club, que nos dá visibilidade aos nossos projetos e nos dá acesso a projetos do resto da Europa. Penso que esse é um dos cunhos importantes desde o início da APBA. Aliás, o nosso lema é “Local Ideas, Global Ventures”.

And internationalization is always a challenge, it’s also not something that should be allowed to become stagnant.

Yeah, that’s an important perspective. We, when we invest, at least in the view of the APBA Business Angels, we always invest in a logic that “Portugal is very small, let’s do the proof of concept and test the market, but it doesn’t make sense if we don’t scale to the European level or a market like the United States or even China. And there, APBA has networks that can help its members in this internationalization, and people from APBA itself have a very global posture.

Through BAE, we participate in an international co-investment club, the BAE Club, which gives us visibility to our projects and gives us access to projects from the rest of Europe. I think that this is one of the important cleats since the beginning of APBA. Our motto is “Local Ideas, Global Ventures”.

22 Tendo em conta a aposta da APBA na criação de redes dentro do espaço lusófono, considera que existe algum receio em expandir os negócios para estas áreas?

Não, não existe esse receio… nós mantemos, por exemplo, uma ótima relação com os Anjos do Brasil e essa é uma área de caminho natural e tem havido algumas situações de coinvestimento.

Existem vários Business Angels, com é o meu caso, que investiram em startups que têm também investidores brasileiros e que se expandiram para o Brasil e para outras geografias, ou seja, é algo que também temos incentivado. Confesso que gostava de ver esta ligação lusófona ainda mais desenvolvida, pois a tendência tem sido mais irmos para mercados anglo-saxónicos.

Do ponto de vista de expansão das startups e do investimento, é onde existe mais atividade e enquadramento mais amigável, mas eu sou um grande defensor também dessa lógica lusófona. Já agora, em relação à lusofonia, os países que têm respondido melhor são o Brasil; Moçambique também, com quem temos uma relação próxima; Angola, da nossa experiência há que reforçar mais e está a fazer o seu caminho; e Cabo Verde, com quem tem havido alguma proximidade, ainda que não haja, que eu saiba, investimentos cruzados.

Considering APBA’s bet on the creation of networks within the Portuguese-speaking area, do you think there is any fear of expanding a business to these areas?

No, there is no such fear... we have, for example, a great relationship with the Brazilian Angels and this is a natural path and there have been some co-investment situations. There are several Business Angels, as is my case, who have invested in startups that also have Brazilian investors and have expanded to Brazil and other geographies, i.e., it is something we have also encouraged. I confess that I would like to see this connection between Portuguese-speaking countries developed further because the tendency has been for us to go to Anglo-Saxon markets.

From the point of view of the expansion of startups and investment, that is where there are more activity and a friendlier environment, but I am also a great supporter of this logic of Lusophony. By the way, regarding Lusophony, the countries that have responded best are Brazil; Mozambique as well, with whom we have a close relationship; Angola, from our experience, needs to be further strengthened and is making its way; and Cape Verde, with whom there has been some proximity, although there are no cross investments, as far as I know.

23 Em Portugal, quais são as áreas de maior investimento atualmente?

Neste momento, o sector fintech e inteligência artificial no sentido lato são talvez as áreas mais importantes. A seguir, o tema da saúde, o que é normal, mas já era antes da Pandemia e vai aumentar, não tenho dúvida de que a tendência vai ser aumentar. Outras áreas relevantes são o e-commerce e a energia renovável. Depois há muitos outros, que são difíceis de catalogar, como media entertainment, marketing digital, cibersegurança … e basicamente são estes os sectores onde se investe mais em Portugal. Pessoalmente, acredito que os sectores da economia verde (florestas) e economia azul (oceanos), são áreas de elevado potencial de crescimento e em que o nosso país pode dar cartas, sobretudo se soubermos utilizar as novas tecnologias, como a inteligência artificial, para potenciar novas soluções e contribuir para a sustentabilidade do planeta.

In Portugal, what are the areas of most investment today?

Right now, the fintech sector and artificial intelligence in the general sense are perhaps the most important areas. Next is healthcare, which is normal, but was already before the Pandemic and will increase, I have no doubt. Other relevant areas are e-commerce and renewable energy. Then there are many others, which are difficult to catalog, such as media entertainment, digital marketing, cybersecurity ... and these are the sectors where more is invested in Portugal. Personally, I believe that the sectors of green economy (forests) and blue economy (oceans) are areas of high growth potential and where our country can make a difference, especially if we know how to use new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to enhance new solutions and contribute to the sustainability of the planet.

Agora que tocou no tema do sector da saúde, e que cresceu com a Pandemia, pergunto o que é que acha que a Pandemia trouxe a estas novas empresas em termos de desafios?

Os desafios são enormes, não é? Primeiro há um grande desafio de curto prazo que tem a ver com a tesouraria, são tudo empresas muito frágeis, enquanto que as grandes são empresas que têm relações privilegiadas com os bancos e são too big to fail. As startups são as primeiras a sofrer com este tipo de situações, sendo que também têm uma agilidade e capacidade de adaptação que as grandes empresas não têm. Mas isto também é uma oportunidade e muitas destas startups estão ligadas à transformação digital e por isso são empresas que vão ser beneficiadas, porque o mundo caminha aceleradamente para a digitalização. As pessoas mudaram de hábitos e estão a mudar de hábitos e já não vão voltar atrás. A minha experiência, a partir daqueles investimentos a que estou mais ligado, é que a procura aumente e, portanto, têm solicitações maiores do que antes da Pandemia. Sem dúvida que muitas startups estão a sofrer e todas elas sofrem de uma certa instabilidade… Por exemplo, as tais parcerias com as empresas grandes, se calhar hoje não é um tema assim muito prioritário para estas empresas. Eles percebem que a médio prazo precisam daquela parceria, mas têm outras questões mais urgentes para resolver, como racionalizar os meios, ou o lay off de algum pessoal, e, portanto, no curto prazo há uma quebra, mas no médio prazo não tenho dúvida nenhuma de que há grandes oportunidades e algumas já se estão a verificar.

Now that you’ve brought up the topic of the healthcare sector, and growing up with Pandemic, I ask what do you think Pandemic has brought to these new companies in terms of challenges?

The challenges are huge, right? First there’s a big short-term challenge that has to do with cash flow, they are all very fragile companies, while the big companies are companies that have privileged relationships with the banks and are too big to fail.

Startups are the first to suffer from this type of situation, and they also have an agility and capacity to adapt that large companies don’t have. But this is also an opportunity, and many of these startups are linked to digital transformation, so they are companies that are going to benefit, because the world is moving quickly towards digitalization. People have changed habits and are changing habits and they’re not going to go back anymore. My experience, from those investments that I’m most connected to, is that demand is increasing and so they have higher requests than before Pandemic. There is no doubt that many startups are suffering and they all suffer from a certain instability... For example, those partnerships with the big companies, maybe today it is not such a priority issue for these companies. They realize that in the medium term they need that partnership, but they have other more urgent issues to solve, such as rationalizing the means, or the lay off of some staff, and, therefore, in the short term there is a break, but in the medium term I have no doubt that there are great opportunities and some of them are already happening.

24 Tais como?

Muitas… olhe, dou-lhe um exemplo: existe uma empresa que desenvolveu uma assistente digital, com base em inteligência artificial, que se chama Agentifai e que alguns Business Angels e VC’s estão a apoiar. Hoje esta startup fornece soluções de atendimento de clientes de grandes empresas, das mais avançadas a nível mundial, como é o caso da Caixa Geral de Depósitos. O número de transações online com a Pandemia aumentou brutalmente e, portanto, como esta empresa presta um serviço em função do número dessas transações, está a crescer fortemente. Tudo o que tem a ver com a tal interação digital tem-se traduzido num crescimento significativo.

Such as?

Many... look, I’ll give you an example: there is a company that developed a digital assistant, based on artificial intelligence, called Agentifai and that some Business Angels and VC’s are supporting. Today this startup provides customer care solutions for large companies, some of the most advanced worldwide, such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos. The number of online transactions with Pandemic has increased tremendously and, therefore, as this company provides a service according to the number of these transactions, it is growing strongly. Everything that has to do with this digital interaction has translated into a significant growth.

De certa forma, esta situação vem acelerar esses processos, não é?

Exatamente. E acelerar numa tendência de não retorno.

Eram coisas que estavam a acontecer xis % ao ano e, de repente, deram um salto quântico e agora já não voltam atrás. Se as pessoas se habituam a usar o Zoom como nós estamos a usar nesta conversa, e se calhar há um ano estaríamos numa sala de reuniões, neste momento o Zoom ou outra aplicação do género passaram a ser a nossa opção por defeito.

In a way, this situation accelerates these processes, doesn’t it?

Exactly. And accelerating in a trend of no return.

These were things that were happening x% a year, and then all of a sudden they took a quantum leap and now they don’t go back. If people get used to using Zoom as we are using it in this conversation, and maybe a year ago we would be in a boardroom, right now Zoom or some other such application has become our default option.

Qual é o perfil de um associado ou investidor da APBA? Temos vários perfis. Pessoas independentes, que querem investir em startups. E não é só pela componente financeira, é porque as pessoas gostam desse contacto, é uma forma de desenvolvimento pessoal e de darem algum retorno à sociedade, mas também de ter o prazer em trabalhar em ideias novas e com empreendedores mais jovens. Depois temos clubes ou veículos de investimento que já têm um grau de profissionalização elevado, são conjuntos de Business Angels que têm fundos alocados para as startups e também os VC’s, ou seja, fundos de investimento que investem em early stage. E, finalmente, há empresas de grande dimensão, que também são nossos associados institucionais porque querem apoiar a APBA por um lado e porque também lhes interessa estar próximo deste deal flow. São estes os quatro perfis que temos na APBA.

What is the profile of an APBA associate or investor?

We have several profiles. Independent people, who want to invest in startups. And it’s not only for the financial component, it’s because people like that contact, it’s a way of personal development and to give some return to society, but also to have the pleasure of working on new ideas and with younger entrepreneurs. Then we have investment clubs or vehicles that already have a high degree of professionalization, they are sets of Business Angels that have funds allocated to startups, and also VC’s, i.e., investment funds that invest in early stage. And, finally, there are large companies, which are also our institutional members because they want to support APBA on the one hand, and because they are also interested in being close to this deal flow. These are the four profiles we have in the APBA.

Para si, o que é liderança?

Liderança para mim é conseguir ajudar as instituições e sobretudo as pessoas a transformar o seu mundo, num sentido que acredito ser mais positivo, para que no final do dia se possam sentir mais realizadas; numa palavra, serem mais felizes.

To you, what is leadership?

Leadership for me is to be able to help institutions and particularly people to transform their world, in a sense that I believe is more positive, so that at the end of the day they can feel more fulfilled; in a word, be happier.

IHCare - Innovation Hospital Care is a technologybased startup focused on three main principles: Research, Development, and Implementation of innovative technological solutions in healthcare, with emphasis on saving resources to maximize the time and money of healthcare units.

It is committed to providing an effective response to all its stakeholders - patients, healthcare providers, and hospital administrations. IHCare’s mission is to humanize healthcare, improve its quality and reduce the cost to society without compromising results.

Diana Pires, founder and CEO of IHCare, during her higher education in Nursing, experienced clinical practice in a real context that revealed an apparent weakness with the hygiene of bedridden patients. In the 21st century, this care was (and still is) performed using a sponge and a basin with water, compromising the comfort and well-being of patients, as well as demonstrating poor hygiene through this procedure.

As a result of his critical, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit, he posed the question that still serves as a motto to present the passion he feels for the dream he has developed over the years - “Can you imagine going three days without taking a bath, without feeling running water in your body? O Showercare® é uma solução inovadora e disruptiva que permite que pessoas acamadas, ou com alto grau de dependência, tenham acesso a um banho de água quente e corrente, sem precisar de sair da cama ou recorrer a técnicas triviais como o uso de bacias e esponjas, aumentando assim o seu conforto e preservando a sua dignidade. Esta solução tem ainda um impacto muito relevante no controlo e prevenção de infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde (contaminação cruzada) e contribui para a redução do risco de acidentes de trabalho dos cuidadores.

Ela permite ainda a higienização diretamente na cama sem mover o doente, o que permite: a redução da exposição do paciente ao ambiente hospitalar fora da enfermaria, já que nos casos em que se desse um duche convencional iria implicar o transporte do paciente; redução do contacto por manipulação e tempo de exposição do paciente e profissional de saúde no ato de higiene; e a redução da doença oportunista por redução da infeção cruzada no corpo do paciente e melhor higienização global (o que tem impacto também na prevenção de outras doenças associadas a uma higienização inadequada).

Showercare® is an innovative and disruptive solution that allows bedridden people, or people with a high degree of dependence, to have access to a bath with hot running water, without having to get out of bed or resort to trivial techniques such as the use of basins and sponges, thus increasing their comfort and preserving their dignity. This solution also has a very relevant impact on the control and prevention of healthcare-associated infections (cross-contamination) and contributes to reducing the risk of occupational accidents for caregivers. It also allows hygiene directly on the bed without moving the patient, which allows: the reduction of patient exposure to the hospital environment outside the ward, since in cases where a conventional shower would be given it would imply transporting the patient; reduction of contact by manipulation and exposure time of the patient and health professional in the hygiene act; and the reduction of opportunistic disease by reducing cross infection on the patient’s body and better overall hygiene (which also has an impact on the prevention of other diseases associated with inadequate hygiene).

28 É de salientar que atualmente, em plena pandemia, os utentes em isolamento com este grau de dependência são somente refrescados através de manápulas com pequenas quantidades de água o que não confere grau de higienização da pele do paciente e que por si só é uma prática não viável da secreção corpórea de cada paciente, incitando à contaminação cruzada.

Adicionalmente, por se tratar de uma solução autónoma e extremamente eficiente, resulta uma redução considerável do tempo necessário para o ato de higienização, melhora o conforto quer do doente quer do profissional de saúde e reduz o consumo de água e a necessidade de infraestrutura de apoio, como casa-de-banho equipadas para banhos, com consequente redução de custos associados.

A solução encontra-se pronta para a realização de um piloto experimental e respetivos ensaios clínicos para a determinação exata da sua eficácia na prevenção de contágio e redução de custos, tendo já capturado a atenção de diversas unidades hospitalares e de apoio a doentes acamados ou com limitações de mobilidade.

Esta solução, enquanto projeto, foi já agraciada com diversos prémios e apoios como reconhecimento do seu carácter inovador, como o Poliempreende, Arrisca C, IAPMEI passaporte para o Empreendedorismo, finalista do EIT Health Innostars, finalista e acelerada pelo programa BGI e,ainda no decorrer do ano de 2020, o apoio do PT2020 através de um apoio IDT. Também o capital privado já reconheceu o potencial da nossa solução, com a entrada no capital da nossa empresa, um Business Angel, que hoje faz parte da nossa equipa, e mais recentemente a Portugal Ventures, o que resultou num investimento cumulativo de mais de 700 mil euros.

Atualmente, estamos no início da fase de testes-piloto em contexto real, em Portugal e na Alemanha. Em parceria com a UBIMEDICAL e C2ICB, apenas aguardamos a aprovação definitiva por parte da Comissão de Ética do Hospital da Cova da Beira para estes mesmos testes iniciarem, assim como do governo regional do Estado Alemão de Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. É primordial, a procura ativa de uma nova ronda de investimento para a fase de pré-industrialização e, posteriormente, concretizar a entrada no mercado nacional e internacional. O foco atual é o mercado Europeu, e em paralelo, o mercado dos Estados Unidos e o do Brasil.

The solution is ready for an experimental pilot and related clinical trials to determine exactly how effective it is in preventing contagion and reducing costs, having already captured the attention of several hospitals and support units for bedridden or mobility-impaired patients.

This solution, as a project, has already received several awards and support in recognition of its innovative character, such as Poliempreende, Arrisca C, IAPMEI Entrepreneurship Passport, EIT Health Innostars finalist, finalist and accelerated by the BGI program and, still in 2020, the support of PT2020 through an IDT support. Private capital has also recognized the potential of our solution, with the entrance in our company’s capital, a Business Angel, who is now part of our team, and more recently Portugal Ventures, which resulted in a cumulative investment of more than 700 thousand euros.

Currently, we are at the beginning of the pilot testing phase in a real context, in Portugal and Germany. In partnership with UBIMEDICAL and C2ICB, we are just waiting for the final approval from the Ethics Committee of the Cova da Beira Hospital for these tests to start, as well as from the regional government of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

It is paramount, the active search for a new round of investment for the pre-industrialization phase and, subsequently, to materialize the entry into the national and international market. The current focus is on the European market, and in parallel, the market in the United States and Brazil.

A Build Up Labs é um startup studio ou Venture Builder ou Company Builder... a verdade é que existem várias designações para este novo modelo de criação de startups.

A missão de um startup studio é profissionalizar o processo de criação de novas empresas, desde a ideia até à fase de scale up, recorrendo a um conjunto de metodologias e ferramentas que reduzem significativamente o risco de falhanço.

2 em cada 10 startups falham. Há vários motivos para que tal aconteça, pode ser por falta de validação de mercado, falta de competências específicas, falta de rede de contactos certa, falta de financiamento ou problemas de equipa e recrutamento.

São essas falhas que pretendemos colmatar com a nossa experiência de muitos anos na criação de novos negócios.

Há 20 anos, eu e os meus cofundadores fundámos um estúdio de desenvolvimento web, estava a internet numa fase muito embrionária.

Since COMON was never a traditional agency and always had a very strong digital DNA, we were constantly coming up with ideas for new tools, apps, businesses.

As the agency’s context was not ideal to bring these ideas to life, we did a spin-off and created Build Up Labs. The two companies share the same creative and innovation culture, share a lot of knowledge, share the HOOD.pt space, but have different teams. In the studio, we breathe the culture of entrepreneurship and lean startup.

Com esta experiência acumulada e com o aprimorar das metodologias e ferramentas, achamos que é a altura certa para escalar este modelo de venture building. Last year we decided to create a parallel incubation program, so we could support the dozens of entrepreneurs and startups that contacted us looking for collaboration. It has been a very enriching experience getting to know and helping these projects.

With this accumulated experience and with the improvement of methodologies and tools, we think the time is right to scale this venture-building model. Apesar de ser uma empresa com apenas 3 anos, a IOTech apresenta visões e soluções inovadoras e diferenciadoras ao nível do I&D (Investigação e Desenvolvimento). Atua nas áreas da Transformação Digital, Desenvolvimento Web/ Mobile e Análise Inteligente de Dados. A IOTECH desenvolve as suas soluções recorrendo a plataformas de cloud computing, sendo estas totalmente escaláveis e desenvolvidas à medida das necessidades e preferências dos seus clientes.

David Carvalhão, empreendedor, Business Angel, public speaker internacional, criou até hoje mais de duas dezenas de startups, três associações e outras tantas patentes. Gosta de projetos exóticos e difíceis de concretizar.

Conversámos com o perito de inovação e tecnologias disruptivas da Agência Europeia de Investigação da Comissão Europeia e ficámos a entender que onde mais gosta de intervir é em Portugal.

David Carvalhão, entrepreneur, Business Angel, international public speaker, has created over two dozen startups, three associations, and as many patents. He likes exotic and challenging projects.

We talked to the innovation and disruptive technologies expert at the European Commission’s European Research Agency and understood that where he most likes to be involved is in Portugal.

O David conta já com a criação de 24 startups, três associações e várias patentes.

Existem dias em que não pensa em nada disto ou a sua cabeça está sempre a trabalhar em direção a novas ideias e novas coisas para desenvolver?

Depende das circunstâncias. Por norma, passo uma grande parte do meu tempo a pensar sobre as ideias que tenho. Quando estou a viver a minha vida do dia-a-dia, tenho este defeito de personalidade, que é um pouco irritante para as pessoas à minha volta, de estar sempre a ver o que é que na minha opinião está mal, o que pode ser melhorado. E a ver como poderia ser criado um negócio à volta disso.

Muitas das minhas ideias, mesmo de patentes, advêm daí: verificar algo que não faz sentido, que pode ser melhorado. Acabo sempre por pegar nelas mais tarde, ver se têm pernas para andar ou ver se são más ideias, o que é frequente.

Há uma exceção, que é o meu ponto de equilíbrio, até porque isto torna-se incomodativo até para mim: quando faço viagens.

Gosto muito de fazer viagens estranhas e invulgares, de atravessar desertos, de escalar montanhas e coisas do género. Geralmente, quando estou no modo viagem-desafio, consigo desligar completamente. E faço questão disso, de não levar telemóvel, ou levar um o mais simples possível para não haver nem redes sociais, nem Messengers, nem email. Aí consigo desligar, mas só nessas situações (risos).

David has already created 24 startups, three associations, and several patents.

Are there days when you don’t think about any of this, or is your head always working toward new ideas and new things to develop?

It depends on the circumstances. As a rule, I spend a lot of my time thinking about the ideas I have. When I’m living my everyday life, I have this personality shortcoming, which is a bit annoying for the people around me, of always looking at what in my opinion is wrong, what could be improved. And seeing how a business could be created around it. Many of my ideas, even for patents, come from that: checking something that doesn’t make sense, that can be improved. I always end up returning to them, to see if they have a chance, or to see if they are bad ideas, which is often the case.

There is one exception, which is my balancing point, because it gets annoying even for me: when I travel.

I really enjoy making strange and unusual trips, crossing deserts, climbing mountains, and the like.

Usually, when I’m in the travel-challenge mode, I can completely switch off. And I make it a point not to take a cell phone, or to take the simplest one possible so that there are no social networks, no messengers, no email. Then I can turn it off, but only in those situations (laughs).

No fundo, tenta resolver problemas, não é?

Sim, literalmente. Olho para a minha vida e tento perceber, talvez porque tenho mau feitio (risos), se há alguma coisa que me incomoda, que me irrita, que eu acho que poderia ser diferente.

E depois disso, tento criar soluções ou, pelo menos, alternativas. Por vezes são coisas que já estão resolvidas, mas não da melhor forma… por exemplo, a última patente, que está agora em registo, foi precisamente ao observar o padrão de uso do meu frigorífico (risos), percebi que usava bastante energia que não precisava.

Por isso, depois de alguma pesquisa e umas experiências que atrapalharam a dinâmica de cozinha da minha família, criei um dispositivo que reduz o consumo dos frigoríficos em cerca de 20%.

Basically, you try to solve problems, right?

Yes, literally. I look at my life and try to realize, maybe because I have a bad temper (laughs), if there is something that bothers me, that irritates me, that I think could be different.

And after that, I try to create solutions or at least alternatives. Sometimes they are things that are already solved, but not in the best way...for example, the last patent, which is now being registered, was precisely by observing the use pattern of my fridge (laughs), I realized that I was using a lot of energy that I didn’t need.

So, after some research and some experiments that disrupted my family’s cooking dynamics, I created a device that reduces the consumption of refrigerators by about 20%.

Pois, o frigorífico é se calhar das coisas que mais gasta energia numa casa.

Sim, na nossa casa, a seguir ao aquecimento elétrico e às máquinas de lavar, o frigorífico acaba por ser onde se gasta mais. É este o tipo de coisas que começo a pensar: “isto se calhar não faz muito sentido, então deixa cá ver como é que poderia fazer”. Frequentemente tenho péssimas ideias, se calhar em cada 10 há uma ou duas que valem alguma coisa.

Yeah, the fridge is probably one of the things that use the most energy in a house.

Yes, in our house, after the electric heating and the washing machines, the refrigerator is where we spend the most. This is the kind of thing that I start thinking: “this probably doesn’t make much sense, so let me see how I could do it”. I often have terrible ideas, maybe one or two out of every 10 are worth something.

E depois, como é que faz essa avaliação?

Há dois tipos de avaliação. Primeiro é a avaliação técnica, porque às vezes uma pessoa pensa que consegue fazer alguma coisa e depois começa a pesquisar e, do ponto de vista científico e técnico, vê que não consegue, ou porque a ciência não está lá, ou porque simplesmente as contas não batem certo.

Depois, há uma validação de negócio, que é perceber se há pessoas suficientes que sentem essa dificuldade, essa irritação com o problema em particular. Se existem, provavelmente há uma base financeira para a ideia ser um negócio.

Basicamente é isto! Já tive muitas ideias que, do ponto de vista técnico, eram perfeitamente exequíveis, mas que do ponto de vista de negócio não o eram.

And then, how do you do that evaluation?

There are two kinds of evaluation. First is the technical evaluation, because sometimes we think we can do something and then we start researching and, from a scientific and technical point of view, we see that we can’t, either because the science isn’t there, or because the math just doesn’t add up.

Then there is a business validation, which is we try to figure out if there are enough people who feel that difficulty, that irritation with the particular problem. If there are, there is probably a financial basis for the idea to be a business.

That’s it! I’ve had many ideas that, from a technical point of view, were perfectly feasible, but from a business point of view were not.

Com base na experiência que já tem, o que considera ser uma boa startup?

Uma boa startup é toda aquela que resolve um problema social. Uma boa startup gera lucro, porque gera valor na sociedade e captura parte desse valor sob a forma de lucro. O nosso mundo torna-se um sítio melhor de alguma forma, pode não ser para toda a gente, pode ser para um grupo restrito, mas há alguém na sociedade cuja vida melhora de alguma forma pela existência da startup.

Na minha experiência, quando não estamos a resolver um problema ou quando não há um grupo suficientemente grande da sociedade que sente a necessidade de que esse problema seja resolvido, não é uma startup. E é aquilo que mais se vê! Faço muitas avaliações a startups associadas a programas de aceleração, e frequentemente os projetos são soluções à procura de problemas.

Outras vezes não há pessoas suficientes que sintam esse problema, ou o problema não é suficientemente grande para necessitar de uma solução nova, de uma solução complexa. Em suma, não há mercado. Por isso, uma boa startup é aquela que resolve um problema que já existe, que é sentido por grande parte da população (mesmo que por vezes não o notem) e que, pela existência daquela startup e daquela solução, esse segmento da população fica com a vida simplificada, melhorada e mais feliz.

From your experience, what do you consider to be a successful startup?

A successful startup solves a social problem. A successful startup generates profit because it generates value in society and captures some of that value in the form of profit. Our world becomes a better place somehow, it may not be for everyone, it may be for a small group, but there is someone in a society whose life is improved in some way by the existence of the startup.

In my experience, when we are not solving a problem or when there is not a large enough group of society that feels the need for that problem to be solved, it is not a startup. And that’s what you see most! I do a lot of evaluations of startups associated with accelerator programs, and often the projects are solutions looking for problems. Other times there are not enough people who feel that problem, or the problem is not big enough to need a new solution, a complex solution. In short, there is no market. Therefore, a good startup solves a problem that already exists, that is felt by a large part of the population (even if sometimes they don’t notice it) and that, because of the existence of that startup and that solution, that segment of the population’s life is simplified, improved, and happier.

“A successful startup solves a social problem” O David é também Business Angel. Quais são os projetos empreendedores que lhe despertam maior interesse?

Aqueles que me despertam maior interesse são os difíceis. E os difíceis normalmente são os projetos que são realmente uma solução nova, que estão a fazer algo que sai do caminho das soluções tentadas. São também os mais arriscados porque, lá está, quando estamos a tentar fazer algo que é realmente novo, muitas vezes surgem dificuldades técnicas.

You are also a Business Angel. What are the entrepreneurial projects you are most interested in?

The ones that get me most interested are the difficult ones. And the difficult ones are usually the projects that are a new solution, that is doing something that goes off the beaten path. They’re also the riskiest because, you know, when you’re trying to do something new, there are often technical difficulties.

E até posso dizer que, de um ponto de vista de investimento puro, nem sequer costumam ser os melhores, já que por vezes a solução é de tal forma inovadora que os potenciais clientes ainda têm que perceber que têm um problema que precisa daquela solução.

O tipo de empresas que eu procuro são as que estão a tentar fazer algo que é realmente diferente, mas dentro de um mercado em que já há outras soluções, só que piores. São mais limitadas, ou não chegam bem lá… Em linguagem de startups: oceanos azuis e oceanos vermelhos – eu gosto de trabalhar em oceanos vermelhos, mas com soluções realmente inovadoras. De certa forma, a existência de concorrência é validação de mercado.

And I can even say that, from a pure investment point of view, they are usually not even the best, since sometimes the solution is so innovative that potential customers still have to realize that they have a problem that needs that solution.

The kind of companies I look for are the ones that are trying to do something different, but within a market where there are already other solutions, but they are worse. They are more limited, or they don’t quite get there... In startup language: blue oceans and red oceans - I like to work in red oceans, but with really innovative solutions. In a way, the existence of competition is market validation.

O que o faz decidir, de um ponto de vista menos racional, investir num determinado negócio?

De longe, a equipa. A realidade é que quando se está a tentar fazer algo realmente inovador, a maior probabilidade é que o produto final vá ser muito diferente do que era a ideia inicial do projeto.

Para fazer esta transição, do que era a ideia inicial para a que vai vingar, é necessária não só uma grande capacidade de adaptação e conhecimento técnico, mas acima de tudo humildade. É imprescindível ter pessoas que tenham a capacidade de reconhecer que a sua solução não é a melhor e que vão ter de pensar noutra coisa. Muitas vezes as startups acabam por falhar quando não acertam à primeira, porque não têm uma equipa capaz, que é resiliente, que tem força de vontade, que é unida o suficiente e que tem a capacidade de se reinventar e de fazer esta transição.

Nos projetos em que investi até hoje, passo uma parte muito substancial do meu tempo a avaliar a equipa, a forma como a equipa interage, como pensa, como reage a um desafio. Quando se encontra uma equipa que está demasiado apaixonada por aquilo que é a sua ideia, que não tem a capacidade de matar o seu bebé… Nos programas de aceleração, uma das minhas alcunhas é o “puppy killer”, o matador de cachorros (risos). As pessoas estão ali, com a sua ideia, que é um cachorrinho bonito, de olhos grandes e tal, e eu chego lá e digo “não, assim não vai lá”. Mas é efetivamente esta capacidade de se readaptar, de refazer o negócio, de refazer a ideia, de estar disposto a assumir que aquilo que foi feito não está a funcionar, que é uma condição para o sucesso de uma startup.

What makes you decide, from a less rational point of view, to invest in a particular business?

By far, the team. The reality is that when you are trying to do something innovative, the greatest probability is that the final product will be very different from what was the initial idea of the project. To make this transition, from what was the initial idea to what will succeed, requires not only a great capacity for adaptation and technical knowledge, but above all it requires humility.

It is essential to have people who can recognize that their solution is not the best and that they will have to think of something else. Many times startups end up failing when they don’t get it right the first time, because they don’t have a capable team that is resilient, that has willpower, that is united enough, and that can reinvent itself and make this transition.

In the projects I have invested in to date, I spend a very substantial part of my time evaluating the team, how the team interacts, how they think, how they react to a challenge. When you find a team that is too passionate about what their idea is, that they don’t have the ability to kill their baby... In accelerator programs, one of my nicknames is the “puppy killer” (laughs). People are there, with their idea, that it’s a nice puppy, with big eyes and so on, and I get there and say “no, it’s not going there”. But it is effectively this ability to readapt, to remake the business, to remake the idea, to be willing to assume that what was done is not working, that is a condition for the success of a startup.

Nasce-se com o ‘bichinho’ para o negócio ou vamos aprendendo?

Isso é uma questão muito profunda (risos). Eu acho que é uma questão de aprendizagem, o que não quer dizer que essa aprendizagem venha do formato académico, de educação formal. Esse ‘bichinho’ vem daquilo que é a construção da personalidade, com experiências que a pessoa tem, e a esmagadora maioria delas diria até que vêm de fora do nosso sistema educativo que, na minha opinião, é completamente anti-empreendedor.

Are we born with a taste for business, or do we learn it?

That’s a very deep question (laughs). I think it’s a question of learning, which doesn’t mean that this learning comes from the academic format, from formal education. That taste comes from what is the construction of the personality, with experiences that the person has, and the overwhelming majority of them I would even say come from outside our educational system which, in my opinion, is completely anti-entrepreneurial.

Como costumo dizer, quando as crianças entram na escola primária, se não resolvem o problema da maneira que o professor quer, o professor fica chateado, os papás ficam chateados, a criança sente que ninguém gosta dela. A criança começa a sentir que tem de estar dentro da caixa e isto prolonga-se por todo o percurso académico.

E depois, finalmente, chega-se à universidade e tem-se uma cadeira de um semestre, de empreendedorismo, e é-nos dito que é agora que vamos tornar-nos empreendedores, depois de passarmos uma vida inteira a levar na cabeça e a castrar a imaginação e o arrojo.

Se formos a pensar, nós nascemos de alguma forma empreendedores.

Quando aprendemos a andar, como é que é?

Aquilo não corre bem à primeira. A pessoa levanta-se, vai de cara ao chão, chora, passa, tenta outra vez, levanta-se, cai de cara ao chão, chora, passa… e, ao fim de várias tentativas a experimentar técnicas diferentes – pôr a perna mais esquerda ou mais à direita -, nós aprendemos a andar. Este sentido de falhar, aprender, tentar, é inato. Agora, a educação que vem a seguir pode totalmente destruir esse sentido inato de empreendedorismo e, na maioria dos casos, infelizmente é o que acontece, ou pode reforçá-lo.

E, portanto, eu acho que é maioritariamente aprendido.

As I usually say, when children enter elementary school, if they don’t solve the problem the way the teacher wants, the teacher gets upset, the parents get upset, the child feels that nobody likes him. The child begins to feel that he or she has to be inside the box, and this goes on throughout the entire academic career. And then, finally, you get to university and you have a one-semester course on entrepreneurship, and you are told that this is the time to become an entrepreneur, after spending a lifetime being hit on the head and castrating your imagination and boldness. If you think about it, we are born entrepreneurs in some way.

When you learn to walk, how is it? It doesn’t go well the first time. You get up, fall on your face, cry, pass, try again, get up, fall on your face, cry, pass... and, after several attempts to try different techniques - to put your leg to the left or to the right - you learn to walk. This sense of failing, learning, trying, is innate. But, the education that follows can either totally destroy this innate sense of entrepreneurship, and in most cases, unfortunately, this is what happens, or it can reinforce it.

And so I think it’s mostly learned.

O David é perito de inovação e tecnologias disruptivas na Agência Europeia de Investigação da Comissão Europeia. Tendo um conhecimento vasto sobre a viabilidade tecnológica e o potencial de mercado, pode dizer-nos como se encontra Portugal neste ramo, atualmente?

Portugal é um caso em desenvolvimento. Nós temos muito potencial no nosso país, mas infelizmente potencial não chega. Temos pessoas muito competentes, muito criativas, mas num ambiente que não é nada conducente ao empreendedorismo, mesmo de um ponto de vista social. Nos Estados Unidos, levar uma empresa à falência é currículo.

Se eu chegar a um sítio qualquer e no meu CV mostrar que já tive três startups que falharam, mas que com elas aprendi, isso conta positivamente. Em Portugal, alguém que falha uma empresa é um falhado. Portanto, nós socialmente temos barreiras muito grandes para as pessoas serem empreendedoras.

E depois temos uma questão contextual que é o nosso governo, a nossa economia, a nossa lei, que é extremamente adversa ao risco. Para já, é praticamente impossível em Portugal uma pessoa separar as finanças pessoais das finanças da sua empresa, e tipicamente quando uma empresa vai à falência, a pessoa, o empreendedor, fica falida e não consegue levantar a cabeça durante 10 anos. E fica na lista negra do Banco de Portugal, e mais 10 listas negras, e dificilmente consegue criar o próximo projeto. Aquilo que nós vemos em países de cultura empreendedora, como Israel, a China, os Estados Unidos, é que grande parte dos empreendedores bem-sucedidos tiveram três, cinco empresas que correram mal e foi a sexta que, de repente, se tornou num unicórnio. O que em Portugal seria impossível.

Do ponto de vista tecnológico, temos condições acima da média. Temos pessoas com muita capacidade, temos pessoas a criar novas tecnologias e a desenvolvê-las e, infelizmente, a esmagadora maioria destas nunca se concretiza num negócio.

You are an expert on innovation and disruptive technologies at the European Commission’s European Research Agency.

Having vast knowledge about technological feasibility and market potential, can you tell us how Portugal is doing in this area, currently?

Portugal is a developing case. We have a lot of potential in our country, but unfortunately potential is not enough. We have very competent, very creative people, but in an environment that is not at all conducive to entrepreneurship, even from a social point of view. In the United States, taking a company to bankruptcy is a CV. If I go somewhere and show on my CV that I have had three startups that failed, but that I learned from them, that counts positively. In Portugal, someone who fails a company is a loser.

So, socially we have very big barriers for people to be entrepreneurs. And then we have a contextual issue that is our government, our economy, our law, which is extremely averse to risk.

It is practically impossible in Portugal for a person to separate his finances from his company’s finances, and typically when a company goes bankrupt, the person, the entrepreneur, goes broke and can’t get his head up for 10 years. And he is blacklisted by the Bank of Portugal, and in 10 other black lists, and he can hardly create the next project. What we see in countries with an entrepreneurial culture, like Israel, China, the United States, is that most successful entrepreneurs had three or five companies that went wrong, and it was the sixth that suddenly became a unicorn. What would be impossible in Portugal.

From the technological point of view, we have above average conditions. We have people with a lot of capacity, we have people creating new technologies and developing them and, unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of these never materialize into a business.

50 Não há impacto…

Nem sequer há uma tentativa de criar startups com base na ciência e tecnologia. As universidades portuguesas estão cheias de patentes (isto não é um problema só português), cheias de investigadores com projetos fabulosos, com tecnologias disruptivas, que no final, o resultado daquilo é uma tese de doutoramento e ficam por aí. Portanto, essa é uma pergunta cuja resposta é “nim”. De um ponto de vista tecnológico e científico, temos condições excecionais, temos condições péssimas para o empreendedorismo e, portanto, a transição do laboratório, da tecnologia, da ciência e do conhecimento para uma aplicação prática em Portugal é muito limitada.

As coisas estão a melhorar, mas ainda há um grande caminho a fazer.

There is no effect...

There isn’t even an attempt to create startups based on science and technology. Portuguese universities are full of patents (this is not just a Portuguese problem), full of researchers with fabulous projects, with disruptive technologies, that in the end, the result is a doctoral thesis and that’s it. So, this is a question whose answer is “nim”. From a technological and scientific point of view, we have exceptional conditions, we have terrible conditions for entrepreneurship and, therefore, the transition from the laboratory, technology, science, and knowledge to a practical application in Portugal is very limited. Things are improving, but there is still a long way to go.

E no espaço europeu, qual é a sua visão em relação ao impacto das tecnologias?

Essa é uma pergunta que pode ser interpretada de duas maneiras. Podemos falar do impacto da tecnologia do ponto de vista económico, do ponto de vista da criação de projetos, startups, de empreendedorismo e, desse ponto de vista, na Europa Central é que estão criadas as estruturas que, de uma forma longe de perfeita - porque não vamos aqui fingir que este é um problema só português - , permitem uma maior saída da tecnologia e da ciência, do campo académico e do campo teórico para as implementações práticas. Nós temos uma Europa a várias velocidades e a Europa Central e a Europa do Norte têm claramente uma ligação muito mais forte entre aquilo que é a Academia e o que é o mercado das startups.

Se olharmos para o impacto da tecnologia naquilo que é a sociedade, estamos neste momento, não só na Europa, mas no mundo, num período de transição, em que a tecnologia está a redefinir completamente a forma como as economias vão funcionar. Estamos a dar os primeiros passos em relação a isso no mercado, se olharmos para a Academia, onde está a ser feita a nova ciência, a nova tecnologia, aquilo que vai sair durante os próximos anos vai ter impactos dramáticos, nomeadamente a nível do emprego. O Banco Mundial prevê que até 2030, 53% de todos os empregos na Europa estejam postos em causa por via da automação - robótica, inteligência artificial, e outras. Portanto, no grande campo da automação, vamos presenciar aqui uma disrupção muito significativa naquilo que é o nosso tecido social, na maneira como nos organizamos enquanto sociedade, porque vamos ter muitos desempregados.

And in the European area, what is your vision regarding the impact of technologies?

This is a question that can be interpreted in two ways. We can talk about the impact of technology from the economic point of view, from the point of view of the creation of projects, startups, entrepreneurship and, from this point of view, Central Europe is where the structures are created that, in a far from perfect way - because we are not going to pretend that this is just a Portuguese problem - , allow a greater output of technology and science, from the academic and theoretical field to practical implementations. We have a multi-speed Europe, and Central Europe and Northern Europe have a much stronger connection between the academic field and the startup market.

If you look at the impact of technology on what society is, we are in a transition period right now, not only in Europe but in the world, where technology is completely redefining how economies are going to work. We are taking the first steps about this in the marketplace, if we look at the academic world, where the new science, the new technology is being made, what is coming out over the next few years is going to have dramatic impacts, namely on the employment level. The World Bank predicts that by 2030, 53% of all jobs in Europe will be jeopardized by automation - robotics, artificial intelligence, and others. So, in the big field of automation, we’re going to see a very significant disruption in what is our social fabric, in the way we organize ourselves as a society, because we’re going to have a lot of unemployed people.

E Portugal não está preparado, pois não?

Ou a Europa em geral?

Eu diria que ninguém no mundo realmente está.

A Europa, provavelmente, teria mais obrigação de se estar a preparar para isso, porque tipicamente nós temos maiores preocupações sociais com a nossa população do que outras sociedades, que se estão a “marimbar” para o desemprego e para a forma como as pessoas vivem. Mas efetivamente estamos numa fase de transição em que vamos ter muitas pessoas desempregadas, muita concentração de poder económico e político, como acontece com qualquer revolução tecnológica – aconteceu com a Revolução Agrícola, onde houve uma concentração de poder, em as pessoas que tinham terra passaram a ter mais poder do que aquelas que não tinham; aconteceu na Revolução Industrial, quem tinha dinheiro para comprar as máquinas ganhava mais poder porque passaram a precisar de menos trabalhadores; tivemos isso na Revolução da Tecnologia de Informação; e vamos ver isso na revolução que está agora a acontecer: quem tem dinheiro para ter os autómatos, a inteligência artificial, os modelos, os data centers, os dados para treinar os modelos, vai concentrar poder, como já se está a observar desde os meados da década de 80.

And Portugal is not ready, right? Or Europe in general?

I would say that nobody in the world is prepared.

Europe probably has a greater obligation to be preparing for it, because typically we have greater social concerns about our population than other societies, which don’t care about unemployment and the way people live. But we are actually in a transition phase where we are going to have a lot of unemployed people, a lot of concentration of economic and political power, as happens with any technological revolution - it happened with the Agricultural Revolution, where there was a concentration of power, where people who had land had more power than those who didn’t; it happened in the Industrial Revolution, where those who had the money to buy the machines gained more power because they needed fewer workers; we had that in the Information Technology Revolution; and we will see this in the revolution that is happening now: whoever has the money to have the automatons, the artificial intelligence, the models, the data centers, the data to train the models, will concentrate power, as we have seen since the mid-1980s.

Com cada vez menos empregos na indústria, produz-se mais. E isto tem sido um dos motores do desemprego nos Estados Unidos e Europa, que muitas vezes é usado depois por demagogos e por políticos menos bem-intencionados para apontar o dedo à imigração e a outras coisas que não têm nada que ver com as causas desse desemprego. Estamos neste momento numa aceleração desse processo. E creio que vamos ter uma grande remodelação do que é o nosso tecido social e económico em todo o mundo, motivada por estas tecnologias e para a qual não estamos minimamente preparados.

Não há nenhum trabalho a fundo no mundo Ocidental sobre o que é que vai ser a nossa sociedade em 2030. O que acho curioso, porque, por exemplo, na China, e não é que eu tenha grande amor ao regime político chinês, existem comités de planeamento governamentais que planeiam a 100 anos e estão a tomar medidas com base nisso. Por isso, sim, nós vamos ter uma grande mudança socioeconómica na Europa e que vai acontecer durante os próximos 10 anos e não estamos preparados.

O que é que nos traz o novo quadro europeu de investimento para estas áreas?

O novo quadro de investimento assenta em alguns conceitos interessantes. Há um grande enfoque da Comissão Europeia na saúde e na sustentabilidade.

Uma sustentabilidade energética e relacionada com as questões do aquecimento global, mas também relacionada com um ponto de vista social, ecológico, de continuidade de funcionamento da sociedade em situações catastróficas, como foi agora com a questão do Covid – aquilo a que eles chamam resiliência - e de alterações do tecido social, como por exemplo relacionadas com o envelhecimento da população.

Vai haver muito dinheiro a ser investido nestas áreas, durante os próximos sete anos em particular, do qual Portugal poderá beneficiar. Apesar de recebermos uma fatia relativamente pequena, para a dimensão da economia portuguesa vai ser muito dinheiro que vai ser investido e vai ter espaço para projetos que endereçam estas temáticas.

With fewer and fewer jobs in the industry, more is being produced. And this has been one of the drivers of unemployment in the United States and Europe, which is often then used by demagogues and less well-meaning politicians to point the finger at immigration and other things that have nothing to do with the causes of that unemployment. We are currently in an acceleration of this process. And I believe that we are going to have a great remodeling of what our social and economic fabric is all over the world, motivated by these technologies and for which we are not at all prepared. There is no in-depth work in the Western world on what our society is going to be like in 2030. Which I find curious, because, for example, in China, and it’s not that I have any great love for the Chinese political regime, there are government planning committees that plan 100 years out and they’re taking action based on that. So yes, we are going to have a major socio-economic change in Europe and that is going to happen over the next 10 years and we are not prepared.

What does the new European framework for investment bring to these areas?

The new investment framework is based on some interesting concepts. There is a strong focus from the European Commission on health and sustainability. Sustainability in terms of energy and global warming issues, but also from a social, ecological point of view, the continuity of society’s functioning in catastrophic situations, as it was now with the Covid issue - what they call resilience - and changes in the social fabric, for example, related to the aging population.

There will be a lot of money to be invested in these areas, during the next seven years in particular, from which Portugal can benefit.

Although we will receive a relatively small amount, for the size of the Portuguese economy there will be a lot of money that will be invested and there will be room for projects that address these themes.

A sustentabilidade económica, a sustentabilidade a nível ambiental, a produção e gestão energética, a gestão de saúde, de envelhecimento ativo, portanto, tudo o que passe pela sustentabilidade na sociedade como um todo, vai ser bastante promovido pela Comissão Europeia.

E, eu diria que nós enquanto país, se formos espertos, devemos começar a focar-nos nos projetos técnico-científicos e empreendedores, que abordam estas temáticas, proativamente, e não reativamente, como costumamos fazer.

Economic sustainability, environmental

O David é public speaker internacional, mas não esconde a sua preferência por fazer as suas intervenções em Portugal.

Por alguma razão especial?

Porque acho que muito do que eu tenho para dizer na Europa e por esse mundo fora tem muita aplicabilidade em Portugal.

E Portugal tem uma vantagem: somos um país pequenino. Somos suficientemente pequenos para sermos ágeis.

Uma das recomendações que dou quase sempre às startups quando estou a ‘mentorá-las’ é que utilizem Portugal como um mercado de teste, porque é um mercado limitado, é um mercado onde se chega rapidamente às pessoas, que está habituado a lidar com mudanças tecnológicas e sociais bastante grandes.

Se recordarmos, Portugal foi um país onde as comunicações móveis entraram muito rapidamente, onde os smartphones entraram muito rapidamente, onde o uso de internet entrou muito rapidamente e, portanto, Portugal tem o potencial de ser um laboratório para a Europa e, quem sabe, para o resto do mundo.

E nós, creio, não aproveitamos o suficiente esta característica, porque acho que acabamos por nos focar mais nas limitações de sermos pequenos (risos).

You are an international public speaker,

sustainability, energy production and management, health management, active aging, therefore, everything that involves sustainability in society as a whole will be heavily promoted by the European Commission.

And, I would say that we as a country, if we are smart, should start focusing on technical-scientific and entrepreneurial projects, which address these issues, proactively and not reactively, as we usually do.

but you don’t hide your preference for speaking in Portugal.

Is there a special reason?

Because I think that much of what I have to say in Europe and around the world has a lot of applicability in Portugal.

And Portugal has an advantage: we are a small country. We are small enough to be agile. One of the recommendations I almost always give to startups when I’m ‘mentoring’ them is to use Portugal as a test market because it’s a limited market, a market where people can be reached quickly, which is used to dealing with quite big technological and social changes.

If we remember, Portugal was a country where mobile communications entered very quickly, where smartphones entered very quickly, where internet use entered very quickly, and therefore Portugal has the potential to be a laboratory for Europe and, who knows, for the rest of the world.

And we, I think, don’t take enough advantage of this characteristic, because I think we end up focusing more on the limitations of being small (laughs).

Acredito que muitas das ideias que eu defendo em sessões de public speaking que faço, que são relacionadas com impacto social do empreendedorismo e da tecnologia, Portugal podia estar na fila da frente das experiências de novas soluções e ser líder mundial.

Como português, gostaria de ver Portugal a aproveitar esse potencial e tento berrar isso aos portugueses sempre que posso (risos), o que não quer dizer que seja muito ouvido, mas pelo menos faço a minha parte.

Relativamente ao investimento em startups…

Nós em Portugal não temos uma cultura de investimento em ideias e startups. Se olharmos para o capital de risco em Portugal, vemos que este é quase incipiente quando comparado, por exemplo, com os EUA. Existe uma mão cheia de players que, apesar de investirem bem (temos algumas pessoas de muita qualidade a trabalhar neste espaço), as quantias que investem são na maioria dos casos baixas.

I believe that many of the ideas that I defend in public speaking sessions that I do, which are related to the social impact of entrepreneurship and technology, Portugal could be in the front row of experimenting with new solutions and be a world leader.

As a Portuguese, I would like to see Portugal take advantage of that potential, and I try to scream that to the Portuguese whenever I can (laughs), which doesn’t mean they listened to me too much, but at least I do my part.

Regarding investment in startups...

In Portugal, we don’t have a culture of investing in ideas and startups. If we look at venture capital in Portugal, we see that it is almost incipient when compared, for example, to the US. There are a handful of players that, despite investing well (we have some talented people working in this space), the amounts they invest are mostly low.

56 Na minha opinião, tentou-se promover o empreendedorismo em Portugal começando da maneira errada. Aquilo que temos observado ao longo dos anos é que há um grande “drive” para os municípios e para as entidades governamentais promoverem aceleradoras e escritórios de cowork, e muitas outras coisas que não vamos dizer que não fazem falta, porque efetivamente cumprem o objetivo de proporcionar um espaço e infra-estrutura básica.

Mas, se eu pegar num vaso e lhe puser terra e uma semente e depois não a regar, não importa o quão bonito é o meu vaso, nem quão grande é o meu vaso, ou quantos vasos eu tenho.

Portugal, por via de não ter capital de risco a funcionar de uma forma eficaz, não tem água para regar as empresas e a grande maioria delas, quando estão a tentar fazer coisas realmente novas e disruptivas, acabam por se apoiar em fundos comunitários e fundos estatais, que não estavam minimamente preparados e desenhados para apoiar uma startup em crescimento rápido, ainda que tenham melhorado com o novo quadro Horizonte Europa.

Nós podemos criar programas de aceleração, mas aquilo que vai acontecer é que as startups vão ser aceleradas e depois não encontram um ambiente para crescer e florescer.

E qual é que seria a melhor solução para inverter esta situação?

A mais importante seria começar a haver investimento de capital de risco em Portugal, haver um maior esforço do Governo português, em promover a entrada de investidores para investir em startups e em apoiar os investidores já a operar no nosso país.

Os nossos Governos adoram ir buscar investidores para construir fábricas, mas investidores em startups, investidores em novos projetos de tecnologia nova, continuam a ser poucos.

In my opinion, we tried to promote entrepreneurship in Portugal starting in the wrong way. What we have observed over the years is that there is a big “drive” for the municipalities and government entities to promote accelerators and coworking offices, and many other things that we won’t say are not necessary, because they effectively fulfill the goal of providing space and basic infrastructure.

But if I take a pot and put soil and a seed in it and then don’t water it, it doesn’t matter how pretty my pot is, or how big my pot is, or how many pots I have.

Portugal, for not having venture capital working in an effective way, has no water to water the companies and the vast majority of them, when they are trying to do really new and disruptive things, end up relying on community funds and state funds, which were not at all prepared and designed to support a startup in rapid growth, even though they have improved with the new Horizon Europe framework.

We can create acceleration programs, but what will happen is that startups will be accelerated and then not find an environment to grow and flourish.

And what would be the best solution to reverse this situation?

The most important would be to start having venture capital investment in Portugal, to have a greater effort by the Portuguese government to promote the entry of investors to invest in startups and to support investors already operating in our country.

Our governments love to go get investors to build factories, but investors in startups, investors in new technology projects, are still few and far between.

57 Depois, o Governo português devia mudar a lei.

Grande parte das ferramentas legais de investimento, daquilo que são as opções, os equity deals, as stock options, as ferramentas de criação de contratos de investimento, não têm suporte na lei portuguesa, ou têm um suporte que obriga uma pessoa a contorcer-se para conseguir fazer um acordo de investimento, o que acaba por afastar muitos investidores internacionais.

E já nem me atrevo a falar das barreiras burocráticas…

Se falar com a maioria dos empreendedores no nosso país, eles olham, e com razão, para a Administração Central como um obstáculo ao progresso dos seus negócios, não como um parceiro.

Uma vez mais, as coisas estão melhores, mas mesmo assim a nossa sociedade no geral está mal preparada para estas coisas. E o que é que acontece? As pessoas ficam muito surpreendidas com o facto de os empreendedores e empresários portugueses, que criam cá as suas empresas, porque é o seu país e é onde vivem, irem para fora, para o Reino Unido e para a Holanda. Nós, portugueses, que somos um povo que gosta muito de modas, era importante criarmos uma cultura de empreendedorismo e não apenas mais uma moda passageira.

Then, the Portuguese government should change the law. Most of the legal tools for investment, such as options, equity deals, stock options, and tools for creating investment contracts, are not supported by Portuguese law or are supported in a way that forces a person to bend over backward to make an investment agreement, which ends up keeping many international investors away.

And I don’t even dare to talk about the bureaucratic barriers anymore... If you talk to most entrepreneurs in our country, they rightly look at the Central Administration as an obstacle to the progress of their business, not as a partner.

Again, things are better, but still, our society, in general, is ill-prepared for these things. And what happens? People are very surprised that Portuguese entrepreneurs and businessmen, who set up their companies here, because this is their country and this is where they live, go abroad, to the United Kingdom and to Holland. We Portuguese, who are a people who love trends, it was important to create a culture of entrepreneurship and not just another passing trend.

As we recover from Covid-19, we have the opportunity to rethink our cities.

During the pandemic we’ve been more reliant on our local communities as well as on technology – and these two things will come together to create new smarter cities, with more people becoming aware of the realities of climate change, future cities are likely to be set up very differently when it comes to both energy and transport.

All autonomous transport, and much of the technology future smart cities will depend on 5G and edge computing.

O 5G aumenta a quantidade de dados que podem ser comunicados, enquanto a tecnologia de ponta usa dados para executar cálculos localmente em vez de enviá-los para outro lugar para serem analisados e executados. 5G and edge computing go hand in hand. 5G increases the amount of data that can be communicated, while edge computing uses data to run calculations locally as opposed to sending it elsewhere to be analysed and acted upon. This is often faster and more resilient to disruption.

Combined, these two technologies hold massive promise and are the preeminent emerging technologies of today.

According to studies by IDC, worldwide 5G connections are set to grow to 1.01bn in 2023 and worldwide spending on edge computing will reach $250bn in 2024. This presents an enormous ecosystem opportunity to transform cities by infusing next generation technology.

Smart cities aim to improve the quality of life for residents. Key technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, artificial intelligence and analytics can be leveraged to cover a whole gamut including waste management, smart parking, e-governance, electricity and public lighting, education, health, traffic management, and smart buildings. It is the combination of edge computing, 5G capabilities and industrial Internet of Things devices which underpins the efficient use of tech, has the potential to enable smarter supply chains, and better equip us to handle disruption.

Nós, humanos, somos instintivamente atraídos pela vida e pela natureza. Há fortes argumentos - do ponto de vista ambiental, de saúde e bem-estar - de que beneficiaríamos se aproximassemos os nossos ambientes urbanos da natureza, incluindo as nossas casas, locais de trabalho e escolas.

Esta é a essência do design biofílico.

Londres foi nomeada em 2019 como a primeira cidade-parque nacional do mundo, com o objetivo de tornar a cidade mais verde, saudável e selvagem. Parte disso é adicionar mais espaços externos naturais, mas também se aplica ao uso de materiais naturais no ambiente construído. Repensar a selva urbana não significa apenas trazer árvores para as vizinhanças da cidade, mas para a estrutura dela também.

We humans are instinctively drawn to life and nature. There are strong arguments – from environmental, health and well-being perspectives – that we would benefit from bringing our urban environments closer to nature, including our homes, workplaces and schools. This is the essence of biophilic design.

London was named in 2019 as the world’s first National Park City, with the aim of making the city greener, healthier and wilder. Part of that is adding more natural outside spaces, but it also applies to using natural materials in the built environment. Rethinking the urban jungle doesn’t just mean bringing trees into the vicinity of the city, but into the fabric of it, too

Em hospitais, foi demonstrado que o design biofílico reduz o stress, a dor e a pressão arterial, ao mesmo tempo que acelera os tempos de recuperação.

Noutras situações, demonstrou aumentar o humor, a produtividade, a criatividade e a concentração, entre outros atributos mentais.

Com a vida moderna conduzida em até 90% em ambientes fechados para muitos, esses são benefícios não triviais que representam grandes diferenças nos resultados financeiros e na qualidade de vida, além de fortalecer a nossa conexão com o mundo natural.

Benefits of biophilic design Intuitively we can understand that biophilic design can be appealing, but it also boasts a wide range of more tangible benefits for various types of buildings.

In hospitals, biophilic design has been shown to reduce stress, pain and blood pressure while accelerating recovery times. In other settings, it has been shown to boost mood, productivity, creativity and concentration, among other mental attributes.

With modern life conducted up to 90 per cent indoors for many, these are non-trivial benefits that stand to make major differences to bottom-lines and quality of life, as well as strengthening our connection to the natural world.

O design biofílico é uma abordagem radicalmente nova e antiga. Em termos gerais, podemos falar sobre três categorias de design biofílico.

A primeira são os “análogos naturais”, trazendo a natureza para o ambiente humano por meio de evocações não vivas ou indiretas da natureza, replicando padrões vistos na natureza, como folhas ou ondas.

“Natureza do espaço” refere-se a configurações espaciais pelas quais somos atraídos na natureza, por exemplo, vistas amplas e ininterruptas ou locais de refúgio onde nos sentimos naturalmente seguros.

“Natureza no espaço” e preocupações em trazer o mundo natural para nossos ambientes construídos.

Isso significa, por exemplo, ter madeira visual na sala, madeira ao toque, e também árvores plantadas em átrios abertos, etc. Também inclui fazer a luz natural fluir para a sala e fazer o possível para aproximar a natureza de nossos ambientes diários.

Biophilic design is both a radically new approach and an ancient one. Broadly, we can talk about three categories of biophilic design.

The first is “natural analogues” bringing nature into the human environment through non-living or indirect evocations of nature, replicating patterns seen in nature, such as leaves or waves.

“Nature of the space” refers to spatial configurations we are attracted to in nature e.g. spacious, uninterrupted views, or places of refuge where we naturally feel safe.

“Nature in the space” and concerns bringing the natural world into our built environments. This means for example having visual wood in the room, wood to touch, and also trees planted in open atriums etc.

It also includes making the natural light flow into the room and doing what is possible to bring nature closer to our daily environments.

As cidades globais alojam hoje mais da metade da população mundial e as Nações Unidas projetam que esse número aumentará para 68 por cento em meados do século. Como irão todos esses residentes movimentar-se pelas cidades e como poderão essas cidades fornecer energia, água, saneamento e outras necessidades básicas? Aproveitando a tecnologia baseada na Internet das Coisas (IoT) e integrando uma população online em novos sistemas que fazem uma cidade funcionar - uma cidade inteligente nova e em evolução.

Existem oito tópicos geralmente reconhecidos que se combinam para tornar uma cidade inteligente: Mobilidade, Cuidados de saúde, Segurança, Água, Energia, Envolvimento e Comunidade, Desenvolvimento Económico e Habitação e Desperdício.

Global cities now account for more than half of the world’s population, and the United Nations projects the number to balloon to 68 percent by mid-century. How will all of these residents move through and around cities, and how will cities provide energy, water, sanitation and other basic needs? By leveraging technology based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and integrating an online population into new systems that make a city work—a new and evolving smart city.

The southeast Asia city-state is the world’s second most densely populated, with some 8,000 people per square kilometer. Faced with an aging population, the government is looking to digital advancements to raise productivity in an already advanced economy. Its Smart Nation vision aims to digitally collect information from throughout the city using sensors linked to aggregation boxes. Data collected on traffic volume or pedestrian activity is sent to appropriate agencies for analysis and action in delivering services.

O emirato está a meio de um plano de sete anos (Dubai 2021) para digitalizar todos os serviços do governo, incluindo cerca de 100 iniciativas que abrangem transportes, comunicações, infraestruturas, eletricidade, serviços económicos e planeamento urbano. Quase 90 serviços governamentais estão já digitalizados, acessíveis através da aplicação DubaiNow. A cidade já possui três esquadras de polícia autónomas onde as pessoas podem pagar multas ou denunciar incidentes sem falar com ninguém.

O Dubai apostou numa série de projetos de alta tecnologia e recentemente construiu um edifício de 2.300 metros quadrados utilizando uma impressora 3D, um exemplo de como planeia construir empreendimentos futuros. O projeto mais conhecido é, talvez, o hiperloop Dubai-Abu Dhabi que pode custar 6 biliões de dólares quando o sistema de 151 quilómetros de extensão for concluído. Uma seção de 10 quilômetros está quase concluída.

The emirate is in the middle of a seven-year plan (Dubai 2021) to digitize all government services, including about 100 initiatives covering transport, communications, infrastructure, electricity, economic services and urban planning. Almost 90 government services are already digitized, accessible through the DubaiNow application.

The city already has three autonomous police stations where people can pay fines or report incidents without speaking to anyone.

Encaixa-se na iniciativa de política de tornar os dados públicos o mais abertos possível, incentivando a colaboração entre os setores público, tecnológico e académico.

“Londres Conectada” é o programa da cidade para fornecer conectividade 5G a toda a cidade, exigindo novos desenvolvimentos para fornecer cobertura total de fibra óptica. Connected London is the city’s program to provide 5G connectivity to the entire city, requiring new developments to provide full fiber-optic coverage. To make it work, officials say 5G cells must be placed 200 meters apart.

One idea is to use drones to spot unused space where cellular antennas can be installed. Another initiative aims to provide open access to Wi-Fi in public buildings and on Copenhaga / Copenhagen the streets..

The Catalonian city consistently draws praise for embracing smart technology. In 2011, the city hosted the first Smart City Expo and World Congress to promote “a self-sufficient city of productive neighborhoods at human speed, inside a hyper-connected zero emissions metropolitan area.”

Spain’s second-largest city now is saturated with LED lightpole mounted sensors that monitor traffic, air quality, pedestrian activity, and noise, and which can dim or switch off lights as needed. Smart bins fitted with vacuums suck waste into underground storage, reducing foul odors and decreasing the number of trips from collection trucks. .

It uses data gleaned from various government departments to show real-time images, maps, icons, and charts of information such as average traffic speed in different districts and tunnels, as well as temperature, rainfall, or parking availability.

Founded in 2015 by COMON, Tap My Back is a Portuguese startup that was born with the intention of only serving that internally, however, due to its high and rapid success, it was created its own brand and then began to be marketed, being these days incubated in the startup studio BUILD UP LABS. As a service, this is a human resources tool that allows its users to improve or even create an environment of recognition and motivation at the workplace (physical or remote) and increase the retention rate of employees, simply and effectively, through the features taps, feedback 360 and/or pulse surveys.

Tap My Back is now in a crucial phase of its development that involves better understanding and redefining its target segments to increase the efficiency of its business, because, as we all know, the world has undergone countless changes with the Pandemic and this has demanded a high level of adaptation and reaction from any business or company.

Pedro Marques Almeida começou, desde muito cedo, a olhar para o empreendedorismo com um gosto muito natural.

Foi através de uma cadeira do curso de Gestão que percebeu que o que queria fazer era ajudar empreendedores, ajudar a concretizar ideias e ajudar a levantar capital.

Em 2009, fundou o maior grupo de consultoria social de gestão em Portugal, o Nova SBE Social Consulting.

Hoje, carrega um currículo invejável, promovido por várias experiências de sucesso em várias empresas, e de apoio a vários empreendedores.

Em março deste ano, junta-se à equipa da Armilar.

Pedro Marques Almeida began, very early on, to look at entrepreneurship with a very natural taste.

It was through a class in the Management course that he realized that what he wanted to do was to help entrepreneurs, help ideas come true, and help raise capital. In 2009, he founded the largest social management consulting group in Portugal, Nova SBE Social Consulting.

Today, he carries an enviable curriculum, is promoted by several successful experiences in several companies, and supporting several entrepreneurs.

77 Pedro, pode contar-nos um pouco sobre o seu percurso até aqui, com destaque na sua experiência de apoio a startups?

Para falar da minha experiência com startups, tenho de começar por falar da minha infância. O meu pai era um empreendedor – lançou e fez crescer um negócio de distribuição de computadores nos anos oitenta.

Desde pequeno que me lembro de ir para o trabalho do meu pai para ajudar no negócio, a levar caixotes, discutir ideias para melhorar o negócio, etc.

E cedo desenvolvi um gosto por negócio e por apoiar empreendedores.

Este gosto, levou-me a que, uns anos mais tarde, escolhesse estudar Gestão e Finanças na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Durante o curso, tive uma cadeira Entrepreneurial Finance & Venture Capital - que me marcou para o resto da vida. Nesta cadeira tive a oportunidade de apoiar a YDreams a fazer fundraising para um Spin-off e fazer o pitch a investidores.

Tive também a oportunidade de ouvir o António da Câmara.

Eu gostei tanto desta experiência que, no verão, acabei por me candidatar à Gesventure - empresa que na altura conectava empreendedores a investidores… e foi assim que eu comecei a dar os primeiros passos a apoiar empreendedores. No ano seguinte e ainda durante a universidade, montei o Nova Social Consulting na Universidade Nova de Lisboa para ajudar empreendedores sociais.

Pedro, can you tell us a little bit about your journey so far, with emphasis on your experience supporting startups?

To talk about my experience with startups, I have to start by talking about my childhood. My father was an entrepreneur - he launched and grew a computer distribution business in the 1980s.

From a young age, I remember going to my father’s work to help in the business, taking crates, discussing ideas to improve the business, etc. And early on I developed a taste for business and supporting entrepreneurs.

This taste led me, a few years later, to choose to study Management and Finance at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. During the course, I had a class Entrepreneurial Finance & Venture Capital - that marked me for the rest of my life. In this class, I had the opportunity to support YDreams in fundraising for a Spin-off and pitching to investors. I also had the opportunity to listen to António da Câmara.

I liked this experience so much that in the summer I ended up applying to Gesventure - a company that at the time connected entrepreneurs to investors... and that’s how I started to take the first steps in supporting entrepreneurs. In the following year and still, during the university, I set up Nova Social Consulting at Universidade Nova de Lisboa to help social entrepreneurs.

Que ainda se encontra a funcionar, não é?

Exatamente. Durante o período em que estive na GesVenture, recebi vários pedidos de empresas com cariz social que não tinham fit com investidores institucionais.

Quando regressei à Nova, e enquanto estudava, decidi criar um grupo para apoiar empreendedores sociais. Inicialmente tinha o nome de Social Entrepreneurship Club.

Mais tarde acabámos por mudar o nome para Nova Social Consulting, porque vimos que havia maior “product market fit” com as capacidades e interesses dos estudantes e NGOs. No fim do curso, acabei por ir para a McKinsey onde fiquei 7 anos. Os meus primeiros 4 anos iniciais na McKinsey foram muito intensos e acabei por não ter tempo para apoiar startups. Mas, em 2015, durante o MBA [Master of Business Administration] e com mais tempo livre, decidi que era a altura certa para me dedicar novamente a apoiar empreendedores.

Which is still working, isn’t it?

Exactly. During my time at GesVenture, I received several requests from social enterprises that didn’t have a fit with institutional investors.

When I returned to Nova, and while I was studying, I decided to create a group to support social entrepreneurs.

Initially, it was called Social Entrepreneurship Club.

Later on, we changed the name to Nova Social Consulting, because we saw that the product-market fit better with the students’ and NGOs’ skills and interests.

At the end of my degree, I ended up going to McKinsey where I stayed for 7 years. My first 4 initial years at McKinsey were very intense and I ended up not having time to support startups. But in 2015, during my MBA [Master of Business Administration] and with more free time, I decided the time was right to dedicate myself to supporting entrepreneurs again.

78 Comecei por apoiar colegas do meu MBA e depois mais tarde, no verão, trabalhei na Caixa Capital, onde estive a apoiar empresas do portefólio - Codacy e MagniFinance. Aí percebi claramente que o que eu gostava mesmo de fazer, o que me dava energia, era trabalhar com empreendedores.

No final do MBA regressei à McKinsey, aí sim dediquei-me mais, criei dentro da McKinsey o Startup Club Lisboa, em que trabalhei com a Aptoide, Unbabel, etc.…

Posteriormente à McKinsey, juntei-me à equipa da Aptoide, que eu já vinha a ajudar há cerca de um ano em regime pro bono. Na Aptoide, levantámos mais de 15 milhões no ICO e fizemos as receitas de in-app purchase crescer de 0 a 3 milhões de dólares/mês.

No último ano comecei a fazer investimentos como Business Angel. A partir de março vou investir pela Armilar.

I started by supporting colleagues in my MBA and then later in the summer I worked at Caixa Capital, where I was supporting portfolio companies Codacy and MagniFinance. There I realized that what I liked to do, what gave me energy, was to work with entrepreneurs.

At the end of my MBA, I went back to McKinsey, and there I dedicated myself more, created the Startup Club Lisboa inside McKinsey, where I worked with Aptoide, Unbabel, etc...

After McKinsey, I joined the Aptoide team, which I had been helping for about a year on a pro bono basis. At Aptoide, we raised over $15 million in ICO and grew in-app purchase revenues from $0 to $3 million/month. In the last year, I started making investments as a Business Angel. In March, I will be investing for Armilar.

O que é que motiva essa paixão? São os resultados que se obtém?

(Risos) Não, nada disso. Não estou demasiado preocupado com os resultados, pois às vezes os inputs são bons, mas como são arriscados, inovadores, acabam por falhar… o que me motiva sim é apoiar empreendedores, pessoas muito espertas e que têm uma obsessão, um drive por resolver um problema.

Gosto de poder contribuir com a minha experiência e com os meus skills para fazer isso acontecer. Motiva-me também a ideia de poder contribuir – como enabler para um país melhor, através de apoiar na geração de emprego qualificado e produtos inovadores.

What is it that motivates this passion? Is it the results you get?

(Laughs) No, not at all. I’m not too worried about the results, because sometimes the inputs are good, but because they are risky, innovative, they end up failing... what does motivate me is to support entrepreneurs, people who are very smart and have an obsession, a drive to solve a problem. I like to be able to contribute my experience and skills to make this happen. I am also motivated by the idea of being able to contribute - as an enabler - to a better country, by supporting the generation of qualified jobs and innovative products.

Como é que organiza o tempo para gerir tanta coisa e ainda não se esquecer de ajudar quem está de certa forma a pedir-lhe ajuda?

Infelizmente, sou muito pouco organizado. Porém sou muito focado. No que é que eu me foco? Na minha família - ainda assim menos do que gostava e que se calhar precisava... Depois, no meu trabalho, e finalmente dedico-me a investir e ajudar empreendedores. Agora vou juntar o meu trabalho à minha paixão – investir em empreendedores. Por isso espero ter mais tempo para outras coisas.

Para além disso, tenho poucas coisas adicionais com que me entretenho. Para muitos tenho uma vida pouco interessante, mas nas coisas que eu gosto sou bastante dedicado e são prioridades para mim.

How do you organize the time to manage so much and still not forget to help those who are in some way asking for your help?

Unfortunately, I am very unorganized. But I am very focused. What do I focus on? On my family - still less than I would like and perhaps need.... Then on my work, and finally on investing and helping entrepreneurs. Now I’m adding my work to my passion - investing in entrepreneurs. So I hope to have more time for other things...

Beyond that, I have few additional things to entertain myself with. For many I have an uninteresting life, but in the things I enjoy I am quite dedicated and they are priorities for me.

Durante este último ano continua a acompanhar startups e empreendedores. Quais são os desafios que eles têm encontrado neste contexto de Pandemia?

A Pandemia, o Covid, afetou todos nós… afetou todas as empresas, pessoas...a nível pessoal, profissional, psicológico…por isso, foi um ano muito duro e muito difícil para todos.

No caso específico das startups foi binário... algumas startups foram negativamente afetadas, pois estavam em setores muito expostos, como o turismo, e que viram os negócios irem quase a 0.

Aí o desafio foi como sobreviver e fazer um grande pivot do negócio. Felizmente a maioria das startups foram beneficiadas, pois são empresas digitais e que a pandemia acelerou. Aqui o desafio foi mais como gerir este crescimento demasiado rápido.

Going forward, acredito que as startups têm um edge. O mundo está a mudar muito rapidamente e há muita incerteza. Neste contexto, as startups estão mais bem preparadas para capturarem as oportunidades. Têm menor inércia, menor custo de oportunidade, menos vícios, e por isto acredito que as startups podem ter um papel crucial no futuro do nosso país.

During this last year, you continue to follow startups and entrepreneurs. What are the challenges they have been facing in this Pandemic context?

Pandemic, Covid, affected all of us...it affected all companies, people...on a personal, professional, psychological level...so it was a very hard and very difficult year for everybody.

In the specific case of startups, it was binary...some startups were negatively affected because they were in very exposed sectors, like tourism, and that saw business go almost to 0. Then the challenge was how to survive and make a major pivot of the business.

Fortunately, most startups benefited, as they are digital companies and that the pandemic accelerated. Here the challenge was more how to manage this too-rapid growth.

Going forward, I believe startups have an edge. The world is changing very quickly and there is a lot of uncertainty. In this context, startups are better prepared to capture opportunities. They have less inertia, less opportunity cost, fewer vices, and for this, I believe that startups can play a crucial role in the future of our country.

No momento certo sim, e dito pela pessoa certa sim.

Todos nós já tivemos conselhos que nos mudaram radicalmente. Mas são uma exceção…

At the right time yes, and said by the right person yes. We have all had advice that changed us radically. But they are an exception...

80 Não se lembra de nenhum exemplo?

Lembro-me de um caso ou outro, em que tinha a experiência e contexto certos.

Mas os empreendedores são pessoas que trabalham muito e geralmente bastante espertas. Para além disso trabalham horas nos problemas em questão.

E muitas vezes a experiência de corporate, que tem uma lógica diferente de uma startup… Por isso é difícil acrescentar valor com conselhos...

Dito isto, os empreendedores devem-se rodear de pessoas complementares, pois requer diferentes capacidades, e que vão mudando ao longo da jornada, para escalar um negócio.

Can you think of any example?

I remember one case or another where I had the right experience and context.

But entrepreneurs are hard-working people and usually quite smart. On top of that, they work for hours on the problems at hand. And often corporate experience, which has a different logic than a startup...

So it’s hard to add value with advice...

That said, entrepreneurs should surround themselves with complementary people, because this requires different skills, as they change along the journey, to scale a business.

Quando é que um empreendedor deve recorrer à ajuda de um Business Angel?

Um Business Angel o que é que traz? Maioritariamente traz capital, experiência e rede. Tipicamente, e especialmente em Portugal, os Business Angels põem tickets pequenos, até 300k€, nas fases iniciais de uma startup. Na minha opinião os empreendedores devem tentar levar a startup o mais longe possível antes de levantarem dinheiro. Nessa fase, poderão decidir se faz sentido recorrer a um Business Angel para os apoiarem financeiramente.

Adicionalmente, e não pelo dinheiro, mas sim pela experiência e rede, poderá fazer sentido recorrer a Business Angels em fases posteriores – em rondas Seed/Series A – ou anteriores -antes de precisarem de levantar capital. Neste caso, o investimento é só uma forma de o Business Angel estar ainda mais incentivado para apoiar a startup.

When should an entrepreneur seek the help of a Business Angel?

What does a Business Angel bring? Mostly brings capital, experience, and network. Typically, and especially in Portugal, Business Angels put small tickets, up to 300k€, in the early stages of a startup. In my opinion, entrepreneurs should try to take the startup as far as possible before raising money. At that stage, they can decide if it makes sense to use a Business Angel to support them financially.

Additionally, and not for the money but the experience and network, it may make sense to use Business Angels at a later stage - in Seed/Series A rounds - or earlier before they need to raise capital. In this case, the investment is just a way for the Business Angel to be even more incentivized to support the startup.

Infelizmente a resposta não é simples, pois cada Business Angel tem a sua tese de investimento, requisitos, áreas de especialidade, etc. E o que para uns é uma excelente ideia, para outros é uma péssima.

Por isso a maior parte das vezes é preciso bater a várias portas, ouvir vários nãos e aprender com as respostas.

Dito isto, há bastante capital disponível para investir em startups. Existem vários sindicatos – grupos de Business Angels. A Core Angels, a Finy Ventures, Olisipo Way. Também há investidores Business Angels individuais.

Enquanto Business Angel, é fácil reconhecer um bom negócio, tendo o seu background de ligação a startups?

Quanto mais tempo fazes uma atividade, melhor és nessa atividade e investir em startups não é diferente.

Experiência em startups e operacional ajuda a poder ajudar as startups e a identificares-te com os empreendedores.

Mas não é preciso ter experiência operacional para ser um bom investidor. No entanto, quanto mais tempo se está envolvido, é mais fácil reconhecer alguns padrões e reconhecer os traços de boas startups.

Mas distinguir o trigo do joio é difícil e leva tempo. Isso é uma coisa que só com tempo e experiência, não há volta a dar (risos).

Business Angel?

Unfortunately, the answer is not simple, because each Business Angel has his or her investment thesis, requirements, areas of expertise, etc. And what for some is a great idea, for others is a terrible idea. So most of the time you have to knock on several doors, hear several no’s, and learn from the answers.

That said, there is plenty of capital available to invest in startups. There are several syndicates - Business Angels groups. Core Angels, Finy Ventures, Olisipo Way. There are also individual Business Angels investors.

In the future, you want to dedicate yourself which you are most interested in investing and why?

Yes, starting in March I will be 100% dedicated to investments. I’m interested in investing in entrepreneurs, with drive and that are addressing big problems through technology.

As at this stage I’m only looking at Portugal, I’m agnostic to the areas.

That said, I’m especially excited by the results of artificial intelligence, namely in unsupervised learning and blockchain.

As a Business Angel, is it easy for you to recognize a good business, having your background of connection to startups?

The longer you do an activity, the better you are at that activity, and investing in startups is no different. Startup and operational experience help you to be able to help startups and identify with entrepreneurs.

But you don’t have to have the operational experience to be a good investor. However, the longer you are involved, the it is easier to recognize some patterns and to recognize the traits of good startups.

But distinguishing the wheat from the chaff is difficult and takes time. That’s something that only with time and experience, there’s no going back (laughs).

Foi uma iniciativa que comecei o ano passado, durante a pandemia como hobbie. Eu já recolhia esta informação para mim, mas sentia que podia ser útil para founders e outros stakeholders. Há muito pouca informação sobre Portugal - quem são os investidores, o que são, porque estão a investir - e senti que podia ajudar. Partilhei com um conjunto de pessoas que eu admiro, para ter o feedback deles inicialmente. O feedback foi positivo e por isso decidi avançar.

Passado um ano, o feedback geral tem sido demasiado bom e estou bastante contente. Também recebi algumas críticas negativas, a maioria construtivas... Mas isso faz parte.

Diz que Portugal carecia de uma iniciativa assim. Foi acompanhando exemplos estrangeiros, para chegar até aqui e perceber que em Portugal era preciso fazer isto também?

Sim, eu já acompanhava muita informação online sobre startups…, mas não encontrava informação sobre Portugal atualizada. Por um lado, havia muitas rondas que não eram cobertas, por outro as que eram cobertas eram por meios com pouca visibilidade.

Adicionalmente as empresas portuguesas com maior sucesso nos últimos anos, em algum momento do tempo, acabaram por mudar os seus headquarters para fora de Portugal. E isso levava a que informação sobre Portugal tivesse pouca qualidade, pois as rondas eram classificadas como sendo de outros mercados. É possível investir numa startup sem ter dinheiro?

Sim. Começar a investir com tempo. Por exemplo, se alguém for empregado ou advisor de uma startup, provavelmente recebe stock options e de alguma forma está a investir nessa startup. Mas dificilmente irá ficar milionário com estas stock options. Mas é uma boa forma de começar a investir.

Com pouco dinheiro pode se juntar a grupos de Business Angels – Finy, VSM, Core Angels, etc – ou mesmo na AngelList, para poder investir montantes residuais.

Every month you produce reports about the startup scene in Portugal, giving tips and reporting important data for entrepreneurs.

What has been the feedback from this initiative?

It was an initiative I started last year during the pandemic as a hobby. I was already collecting this information for myself, but I felt it could be useful for founders and other stakeholders. There is very little information about Portugal - who are the investors, what are they, why are they investing - and I felt I could help. I shared it with some people I admire, to get their feedback initially. The feedback was positive and so I decided to move forward.

After a year, the overall feedback has been too good and I’m quite happy. I’ve also received some negative criticism, mostly constructive... But that’s part of it.

You say that Portugal lacked such an initiative.

You followed examples from abroad to get here and realize that Portugal needed to do this too?

Yes, I already followed a lot of online information about startups..., but I couldn’t find updated information about Portugal. On one hand, there were many rounds that were not covered, and on the other hand the ones that were covered were by low visibility media. Additionally, the most successful Portuguese companies in the last few years, at some point in time, ended up moving their headquarters out of Portugal. And this meant that information about Portugal had little quality, because the rounds were classified as being from other markets.

Is it possible to invest in a startup without having money?

Yes. Start investing with time. For example, if one is an employee or advisor of a startup, one probably gets stock options and in some way is investing in that startup. But you will hardly become a millionaire with these stock options. But it is a good way to start investing.

With little money you can join Business Angels groups - Finy, VSM, Core Angels, etc - or even AngelList, so you can invest residual amounts.

1. Definir a sua identidade pessoal

1. Define your personal identity

Crie a sua Marca Pessoal. É o primeiro passo para qualquer profissional.

Pode achar que é claro para o mercado onde atua, mas acredite precisa de valorizar este ponto.

A interseção de como se vê e de como os outros o veem, vai ser precisamente o que se chama de processo de Personal Branding.

Identifique as competências que o(a) fazem brilhar, as soft e as hard skills, assim como as que precisam de ser desenvolvidas.

Crie planos de ação para desenvolver as que não tem, ou eventualmente que precisam de ser melhoradas. Este processo é contínuo, aqui não se trata do profissional júnior, sénior ou até estudante.

O mundo muda tão rápido que as competências de hoje podem não ser as suas melhores armas amanhã. Honestidade e transparência são obrigatórias nesta análise. Não tem outra forma de o fazer. Vai seguramente descobrir muito sobre si. Ajuda fazer esta análise com um espelho. Olhe para si e faça a pergunta: quem eu sou?

Com esta etapa vai criar a narrativa da sua história. As marcas mais fortes geralmente são suportadas por uma grande história. Isto vai definir a sua marca pessoal. É fácil? Não, não é. É possível? Create your Personal Brand.

This is the first step for any professional. You may think it is clear to the market where you operate, but believe me, you need to value this point. The intersection of how you see yourself and how others see you will be precisely what is called the Personal Branding process.

Identify the skills that make you shine, the soft and hard skills, as well as the ones that need to be developed.

Create action plans to develop the ones you don’t have, or possibly the ones that need improvement.

This process is ongoing, here it is not about the junior, senior, or even student professional.

The world changes so fast that today’s skills may not be your best weapons tomorrow. Honesty and transparency are mandatory in this analysis. There is no other way to do it. Is it easy? No, it isn’t. Is it possible? Of course, it is! This can be the difference in the future of your project. Don’t forget that people are interested in people, whatever business your startup is focused on, having a transparent, heartfelt, and strong narrative will be the difference between a client or investor wanting to work with you, or not. Be clear, be focused, and make sure your story is compelling.

Quando desenvolve a sua Marca Pessoal, tem de necessariamente entender o seu porquê. Apostar na transparência da sua essência. Nos valores que realmente fazem mover as suas ações.

Imagine-se no futuro, com tudo que está a fazer hoje. Se tiver dificuldade em fazer este exercício, peça ajuda a um(a) mentor(a) para orientação e fazer este caminho de forma mais rápida e acertada. É necessário fazer um bom pitch do seu projeto, mas normalmente o que se quer saber mais? Quem criou este projeto, o porquê.

E aí sim a sua história vai ser única, vai explicar os seus porquês. Porque fazem parte de si, da sua essência. A sua marca.

When you develop your Personal Brand, you must necessarily understand your why. Bet on the transparency of your essence. On the values that drive your actions.

Imagine yourself in the future, with everything you are doing today. If you have difficulty in doing this exercise, ask a mentor for help to guide you and make this path quicker and better. It is necessary to make a good pitch for your project, but usually, what do you want to know more about? Who created this project, why.

Diria mesmo que fazer um draft do seu passado, presente e futuro pode ajudar numa visão holística da gestão da sua carreira.

Muitas startups passaram já pela experiência de não conseguirem vender a sua ideia, muitas vezes porque os seus criadores não valorizam a importância, e o poder que a sua Marca Pessoal tem com todos os envolvidos.

Existem uma série de competências que terá obrigatoriamente de aprender, ou desenvolver de forma permanente.

A comunicação em público, escrita criativa, usar a sua imagem pessoal como ferramenta para comunicar são determinantes no seu posicionamento, logo no seu projeto.

First of all, make sure that your Personal Brand is articulated with your project so that it is a tool to be used in your growth. This requires a deep knowledge of you, as a person, as a professional, and when you start a Personal Branding process there are many questions.

I would even say that making a draft of your past, present and future can help in a holistic view of your career management.

Many startups have already gone through the experience of not being able to sell their idea, often because their creators do not value the importance and power that their Personal Brand has with all those involved.

There are several skills that you must learn, or permanently develop.

Communication in public, creative writing, using your personal image as a tool to communicate is crucial in your positioning, and therefore in your project.

Considerando tudo o que envolve o presente e o futuro de uma startup é importante que exista uma diferença muito clara da sua Marca Pessoal e da marca do projeto.

Não espere pela perfeição. Se espera por ter o conteúdo perfeito, vai deixar passar muitas oportunidades, e talvez até aquele momento que pode fazer a diferença na sua vida.

Lembro-me de que quando comecei a trabalhar a minha marca pessoal, fazia um enorme investimento de tempo para que o conteúdo fosse notável e que levou a que muitas coisas fossem adiadas.

Rapidamente percebi que esse não era o caminho.

Concentre-se nos seus pontos fortes, aprenda a incluir a gestão da sua marca na sua agenda e com treino tudo passa a ser feito de forma natural e divertida. Sim, divirta-se a comunicar a sua marca, tenha prazer quando o faz porque só assim vai chegar ao coração do seu público. Por isso, corda nos sapatos e vamos a isto!

Don’t wait for perfection. If you wait for having the perfect content, you will miss out on many opportunities, and maybe even that moment that can make a difference in your life.

I remember when I first started working on my personal brand, I was making a huge investment of time to make the content outstanding and that led to a lot of things being put off. I quickly realized that was not the way to go. Focus on your strengths, learn to include your brand management in your agenda, and with training, everything becomes natural and fun. Yes, have fun communicating your brand, take pleasure when you do it because that is the only way you will reach your audience’s heart. So, rope on your shoes and let’s do it!

Turismo depois da pandemia Tourism after the pandemic Enquanto o país enfrenta novo confinamento e o turismo permanece em suspenso, o Turismo de Portugal lançou uma campanha de promoção de um turismo mais responsável e sustentável nos principais mercados emissores: Reino Unido, França, Espanha, Alemanha e Brasil.

Cada vídeo mostra belas paisagens do país a que se dirige, num apelo à mobilidade e numa convocatória à união, à consciência colectiva e à vontade e responsabilidade destes destinos protegerem aquilo que lhes foi atribuído pela natureza, que é essência da sua identidade e que urge que se conserve para sempre.

Em cada vídeo, o protagonista, na voz de uma criança e na língua oficial de cada país apela à responsabilidade de um turista e de um sector mais sustentável, traduzido na assinatura “Tomorrow is today” (amanhã é hoje), força motora que nos fará a todos redescobrir novas formas de viajar”.

O conceito deriva das orientações globais da Organização Mundial do Turismo, que apontam para uma recuperação responsável do sector, após a pandemia, para que a actividade turística retome ainda mais forte e mais sustentável.

A recuperação do setor será certamente lenta e dolorosa face ao panorama atual. Os efeitos do Covid-19 no setor atiraram Portugal para níveis de 1993.

No ano passado houve uma queda superior a 60% em hóspedes e dormidas, tendo este último indicador regressado a valores que não eram vistos há 27 anos.

Os alojamentos turísticos registaram 10,5 milhões de hóspedes e 26 milhões de dormidas no ano passado, o que representa quedas de 61,2% e de 63% face a 2019, respectivamente, causadas pelo efeito da pandemia.

Os números relativos a Dezembro mostram, no entanto, uma ligeira melhoria face a Novembro, com 462,5 mil hóspedes e 972,7 mil dormidas.

Nesse mês, 50% dos estabelecimentos de alojamento turístico encerraram ou não tiveram hóspedes. Aliado a medidas do Governo com o layoff simplificado, esta tem sido uma das formas de as empresas reagiram à queda da procura.

De acordo com os dados do INE, os portugueses foram responsáveis por 13,6 milhões de dormidas (-35,3%) e os mercados externos por 12,3 milhões de dormidas (-74,9%).

No caso dos principais mercados externos, o Reino Unido foi o que teve a pior performance, com menos 78,5% dormidas face a 2019, cabendo a Espanha a evolução menos negativa, mas que ainda assim foi de -65,9%.

Proximidade Mesmo que as empresas aéreas reafirmem a segurança de andar de avião neste momento de pandemia, a preferência é por deslocações mais curtas, de preferência de carro. Esse meio de transporte – juntamento com o crescimento de adoção de cães e gatos na quarentena – fez duplicar a procura por alojamentos que aceitem pets. Segundo a pesquisa, metade (55%) quer conhecer um novo destino na região onde mora e 59% pretende ir para um destino de natureza próximo. Num momento de incerteza, 63% também disseram que planeiam viajar para algum local que já conhecem, independentemente da distância.

No mundo todo, desde o início da pandemia, aumentaram as recomendações de atividades ao ar livre por hóspedes que passaram por acomodações do Booking.com.

“Bleasure” Com a adoção do trabalho remoto por um contingente maior de pessoas, deve aumentar a tendência de misturar viagens de trabalho (business) e de lazer (pleasure). Por isso, as plataformas de pesquisa de alojamento devem passar a destacar informações como presença de home office e qualidade da ligação de internet.

Segundo a pesquisa, 43% consideram reservar um lugar onde também possam trabalhar e 58% vão estenderas suas viagens de trabalho para aproveitar as folgas.

A Fundação AIP anunciou que a nova edição do Portugal Economia Social acontece entre os dias 26 e 27 de maio de 2021, no Centro de Congressos de Lisboa. O evento do ano passado foi cancelado depois das recomendações da DGS, perante a pandemia do COVID-19, mas a organização decidiu regressar em peso neste novo ano.

A Think Conference tem-se afirmado com uma das grandes conferências de Marketing Digital e Empreendedorismo em Portugal.

Durante os dois dias do evento, vão estar presentes na Think Conference diversos oradores das mais variadas áreas do mundo digital. Pelo palco passarão empreendedores de sucesso, CEOs de startups avaliadas em milhões de euros, figuras públicas e muitos profissionais de renome.
