OUR MOST IMPORTANT CURRENCY IS TIME LUIS BARROCA MONTEIRO CEO FINY VENTURES

I

recently had the opportunity to read a post by Tim Vieira in which he presented “a new currency”: time.

Signed articles only convey the positions of their authors.

The importance of time has been talked about for a long time, but this brief post motivated me to share this topic with you, because I believe that, more for some than for others, everyone senses in some way that we don’t notice the day passing by. How many of us say that 24 hours a day is not enough? That we have “a thousand friends” but that there will be few on whom we can really count? That the end of the week comes and we didn’t even notice it passing? “Another year has passed!”, will be what most will say “soon”. Tim mentions in his post that the most important currency is not the euro, the dollar or the pound (I would also add cryptocurrency). And indeed, it is not.

JUNE 2022

For most, life is a rush and they don’t value quality moments, those that really matter. Money has its importance, yes, but what good is it if we don’t have a healthy, happy life, if we can’t share a smile, a sunset. We are in this passing world and the “currency” will be of no use if it is not applied to things that allow us to leave it better than what we found. Not to leave us with the feeling of wasted time. So use your time wisely and with purpose. Our time is limited. Thank you Tim.

INTERVIEW

LINDA PEREIRA:

“We need more women in leadership roles and politics”

L

inda Pereira, born in England, has Portuguese and British dual citizenship. She’s residing in Estoril. She visited Portugal, for the first time, in the late 1970s while still a student. In 1983, she immigrated alone, to Portugal, where she had no family. In 1985, she created her own company and in 1992, before Expo98, she was involved in the organization of the first Portuguese Presidency of the EU. Speaker, consultant, specialist in strategic communication, writer and educator, entrepreneur, international consultant, specialist in strategic communication and corporate diplomacy. She was considered one

6

of the five most influential portuguese personalities in the industry and received several international awards, including a Medal of Honor for Entrepreneurship. She is currently President of L & I Communications Group, CEO of CPL Events, and was chosen as the “Global Chair” of Portugal, of the G-100 Global Network Meeting, which took place in Cascais, between 19 and 22 May.

IS THE G-100 IN PORTUGAL DEFINITIVE? The work was meant to be definitive. And I can say, in first hand, that yes, the G-100 has already approved three years of the event in Portugal. This was the launch, and we’ve already managed to

capture the biggest event, which will be in the next year, from the 18th to the 21st of May. It hasn’t been signed yet, but it’s confirmed for next year.

IN THE CITY OF CASCAIS? It will be in Cascais. It won’t be here because this year what we wanted to do was to show a little bit of the cultural soul that Cascais has, in terms of tradition, beauty and art. Next year, we’re going to another place, because we have more people, it’s bigger, more impactful, it’s more global, it’s hybrid. We are, at the moment, around 2.5 million, we are heading towards 5 million, therefore, we are counting, for next year, to have around

ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

JUNE 2022

7

2500 participants and we have to choose a place like the Centro de Congressos, or something similar.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE EVOLUTION OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT IN PORTUGAL IN THE LAST DECADE? I am eternally dissatisfied. When people, in places of power, tell me that we’ve walked a lot, I don’t think

8

so, I think that we’ve walked a little, we started too late. In Portugal, women were little ants until not long ago. Women work hard, they are brilliant, they do things, but it is to give shine and light to those above, and those who are above are men. So we have a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot to go. My life is to remind myself daily that we have to act locally and internationally,

because as long as I’m in Portugal and I’m feeling good, we say we’re all fine. It’s not true, because the rest of the world is not doing well. Until we all go up, no one has gone up. It’s very important to remember this. And I recognize that it is difficult in Portugal. Because for one to have the other, the other has to lose. It’s a complicated transition. ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

But in Portugal, we have great laws, fabulous laws, which are not applied on a daily basis. We have a long way to go. The minister himself admitted this perfectly, that we have a long way to go.

GENDER EQUALITY POLICIES, MUCH REMAINS TO BE DONE. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR THAT COULD SERVE AS A BOOST FOR INITIATIVES SUCH AS THE G-100? In the last four years, in Portugal, we had a Secretary of State for parity, who had some influence and who fought a lot. We’ve already implemented fantastic laws, such as the “work life balance”. But to have a law is one thing, another is to apply that law, and we know they’re not applied every day. And I know this, because I work in the field. Nobody imagined that the G-100 would have a “Global Chair” in Portugal. Portugal is not a country of great influence in the world, it is not a country as well known as we think we are, and it is not a country that, out of 100 countries in the world, because there are 195, would be an obvious choice to have a “Global Chair” . JUNE 2022

A “Global Chair” chosen for Portugal means that we have some words to say. But now it is up to us Women, with our male partners, to act so that what already exists is implemented, and what does not yet exist, can be created. We need more Women in leadership roles, more Women in politics, the government has set a great example. Let’s see if companies follow.

WHAT WORDS COULD YOU SAY TO INSPIRE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN PORTUGAL AND AROUND THE WORLD? We women are much more perfectionists and we have that tendency to wait until we have everything perfect before we launch or make something. What I say to women entrepreneurs, founders, creators in any area, is “don’t stay in an office or in your house, or wherever, locked in fighting your demons”. Come to events like these, which let you know people who have been through it. Share your story, join other women who have things to tell you, who have things to share, who can advise.

Because I’m absolutely fundamentalist about the fact that if we want to go far, we have to go together. Share, ask, have a network, grow your network. Men do this brilliantly. It is time for us to take the step that we must, so that we can create a support movement among women.

IS THIS NETWORKING NOT JUST AN EXCHANGE OF CONTACTS, BUT AN EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCES AND TO INSPIRE EACH OTHER? Exactly. Networking is work, networking is not tea and cocktails, none of that. Networking is meeting people who have a career, who have had an experience, who can look back and say: “Look, do it like this.”, “This is the best strategy.”, “I have a network of contacts of product buyers. Do you want to join my network?” I can promote you.”. Essentially, we are here to exchange experiences. I usually say it’s “connect, share, development and grow”. We, all together, can manage to be an unstoppable force.

ELICA MARTINS GRANT TORTHON BRASIL We have seen gender equality rising in the whole world. It is wonderful. And the concept of the G-100 is wonderful because it unites people from all over the world, experiences are shared and the difficulties that each country has to reach the gender equality are also shared. This makes people support, and help, globally.”

NANCY ALLEN MOTIVACIONAL COACH My message to business women or women who work for others and who dream of starting their own business, is that you can do it. There is a lot of support. Find an organization, find a support group that will help you, such as the G-100.”

SHIRLEY WHING CHOW WOMAN’S INDIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY The message for women: we are born with everything it takes inside us to be our own hero, there are no limits to our imagination. So if you can idealize and believe in your dreams, then you will be able to achieve your dreams. All we need is a global network, or even a small network of contacts. We have to live each moment with purpose and optimism, because that choice will take you very far.”

BLANCA SILVA CEO NENA SELECTED COFFEE Women, remember that we all have, within us, the ability to transform the world, because we were created to give. We were not created just to receive. We have to give, we have to smile. We have to give a hug, we have to give love, we have to give life. Women don’t let yourselves be crushed by a society that thinks that women don’t have potential. We do. We have precious potential.”

PAULA DELGADO MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER I am very proud that we managed to do this event. This event is fantastic, I recommend everyone to attend the next event. This is not a women-only event, this is a mixed event, this is an event for people, for men and women.”

PATIENCE MODEVI FOUNDER & DIRECTOR OTENTIK OPTIONS COTERIE It’s wonderful to come to such an event. Other women need to come and see this kind of event, so we can move forward and impact the world.”

GEORGE NIEMEYER CEO MULTILINK COMERCIAL “I strongly believe in networking. I really believe in this cause. We have to work hard to eliminate gender discrimination, which is the purpose of this group. And I strongly believe in the integration of men into this group, and that it shouldn’t just be a women’s initiative. It is an initiative that must be common in society, so that the desired end can be achieved.”

ANDREA LAVAREDA HEAD OF GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS & INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AT FINY VENTURES The G-100 in Portugal is certainly an initiative that came to stay. Female empowerment and the policy debate of gender equality, as well as the position of women in the net that makes up the business world, are themes of extremely important for the construction of a just society. The G-100 is more than an event, it is a transforming agent for the world of business and women’s leadership. It was a pride for us, Finy Ventures, to be able to sponsor an event of this scale and certainly a partnership was also born from here for great importance initiatives in the entrepreneurship. Together we will all go further!”

INTERVIEW

JOANA MOSCOSO: “A scientist passionate about science”

J

oana Moscoso, with northern roots, born and raised in Valença do Minho, soon discovered her fascination with bacteria and that she wanted to be a scientist. She entered the Biology course at the Faculdade de Ciências of the Universidade do Porto. In the final year of the course, she left for Umeå University, in Northern Sweden, as an Erasmus student. She studied in Sweden, Australia, UK. And she became a scientist. She has an enviable international background for her age, and several accolades along the way. One of them, the MIT Innovators Under 35 award, the most

14

important distinction of the MIT Technology Review, a magazine published by the MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which recognizes talented leaders around the world. She has her feet firmly on the ground, but her dream, in addition to leaving a positive mark on the world, is to open a restaurant.

FIRST, TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF: WHO IS JOANA MOSCOSO PERSONALLY? Inside, Joana is a young woman, cheerful, demanding, curious, ambitious, with her feet firmly on the ground. I like to learn new things, I’m not afraid to speak my mind, I’m

a friend, I’m a companion, I’m a mother, I’m a daughter and I’m a granddaughter. I am also a passionate professional. I’m lazy for sport.

YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT SCIENCE AND INNOVATION. WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER THIS PASSION OF YOURS? It all started when I was 9 years old, when I learned at school that there were very small living beings, invisible to the naked eye, living everywhere around us. These are called bacteria. Knowing of its existence changed my life. I was so fascinated and curious that I decided, in that moment, that I wanted to be a scientist to investigate

ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

bacteria, to understand how such tiny organisms can be so capable of making us sick or so ingenious to the point of being used in the production of various things that are useful to us, such as yogurt. This made me embark on a career linked to science and innovation.

YOU HAVE A PHD IN MICROBIOLOGY FROM IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON (UNITED KINGDOM), A FELLOW OF MARIE SKŁODOWSKA CURIEE, CO-FOUNDER OF TWO COMPANIES, NATIVE SCIENTIST AND CHAPERONE, BOTH LINKED TO SCIENCE. WHAT DO THEY CONSIST OF? HOW DO THEY DIFFER OR COMPLEMENT? Both support science and help scientists to finish their work and/or career. Native Scientist is a non-profit organization that connects children and scientists to promote fair and quality science education. It is present in 9 countries and has already established more than 20 thousand connections between children and scientists. I cofounded Native Scientist with a colleague, Tatiana Correia, also a researcher, when we

lived in London. Chaperone aims to democratize the access to a science career development services. Through group training, individual sessions, bootcamps or webinars, it brings together scientists and career consultants. It is the world’s first online platform for personalized career support for scientists. It brings together around 40 career advisors who together support scientists in more than 50 different topics. I co-founded Chaperone with a colleague, Pedro Resende, also a researcher, when the two of us were working at

16

i3S, a health research and innovation institute in Porto.

YOU RECEIVED THE MIT INNOVATORS UNDER 35 AWARD, THE MOST IMPORTANT DISTINCTION FROM THE MIT TECHNOLOGY REVIEW, A MAGAZINE PUBLISHED BY THE MIT – MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TOGETHER WITH TATIANA CORREIA DUE TO NATIVE SCIENTIST. WHAT DID THIS AWARD MEAN TO YOU? This award was a recognition for the work done to date within the scope of Native Scientist and a lever for its future. It was awarded following other awards. I consider that the awards ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

are a way of validating the projects in which we are involved and an indication that we are on the right path. They give visibility. They open doors.

APART FROM THESE TWO STARTUPS, YOU’RE ALSO THE STRATEGIC ADVISOR & MENTOR OF “LETTERS WITH SCIENCE”. ANOTHER SCIENCERELATED PROJECT? Cartas com Ciência aims to promote scientific literacy in portuguese-speaking countries. It establishes links between children/ adolescents and scientists through an exchange of letters program and operates JUNE 2022

I consider that the awards are a way of validating the projects in which we are involved and an indication that we are on the right path. They give visibility. They open doors.”

in portuguese-speaking countries. It was founded by Mariana Alves and Rafael Galupa, whom I met through Native Scientist.

YOU’RE ALSO A PEACH AMBASSADOR, LINKED TO CHILDREN. WHAT DOES THIS PROJECT CONSIST OF? This project promotes bilingualism and multilingualism in children and families who use more than one language in their daily lives. It aims to make known the challenges and benefits of educating a child with more than one language. It is very relevant

17

in the context of migrant communities, which naturally have the potential to be bilingual or multilingual, but where this is not always enhanced or valued.

other things and gave wings to those passions. I face this ability to be dazzled by new things naturally. Change gives me energy and brings new opportunities.

ANOTHER PASSION OF YOURS IS BACTERIA. YOU’VE STUDIED THEM AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, AT 3S – INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN HEALTH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO, AND ALSO IN CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA. IS IT STILL SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?

YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH AND YOU’RE NOT YET 40 YEARS OLD. WHAT DO YOU STILL NEED TO ACHIEVE?

I also studied them in Sweden, and on shorter stays in Germany, Switzerland and France. I was “collecting countries” as I progressed in my scientific career. They still fascinate me, yes, but as I became more and more a scientist, I fell in love with

18

I have no idea! I expect a lot, but if not, it’s still fine. The truth is I focus on living one day at a time and making a difference every day of my life. I try to contribute in a positive way to myself, to those around me, and to society. I like to feel light and wake up knowing that the day before I did my best.

DURING THE RESEARCH FOR THIS INTERVIEW, I DISCOVERED THAT YOU LOVE BEING WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ENJOYING A GOOD SNACK. YOU DREAM OF HAVING YOUR OWN RESTAURANT ONE DAY. DO YOU STILL HAVE THIS DREAM? Yes, I still have the dream of having my own restaurant. I grew up in a family in the restaurant and hotel business. Because of that, I was a student-worker from 12 to 21 years old. At the time, I didn’t like the “obligation” to get involved and help in the family business, but today I consider that experience one of my greatest assets. It became ingrained and I consider managing a restaurant an art.

INTERVIEW

ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

PEDRO MARIANO

believes that he can make the difference

H

e studied Marketing and Advertising, but dropped out to work in banking. He wrote a book. He’s currently an entrepreneur dedicated to fighting injustice in civil society. He created the Assedius.pt platform after being a victim of bullying in the workplace. He’s main objective is to solve the individual problem of each of the victims who present themselves. He believes that labor harassment is still a taboo topic in Portugal, but despite the “rocky path” he has taken, he considers that the evolution has been positive and constant. He’s a fighter, resilient, but positive. Above all, he believes that he can make JUNE 2022

a difference, as the fight for justice is his greatest weapon.

FIRST, TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF: WHO IS PEDRO MARIANO PERSONALLY? I am an entrepreneur and a creative person, with a great spirit of curiosity, innovation and resilience. More and more I follow my intuition and punctually ask my mentors for advice, and then I make the decision that my conscience/reason dictates and usually it’s never wrong. On the other hand, I have a deafening sense of justice that drives me to act actively in the civil society, developing projects aimed at improving the quality of life of people and companies.

THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INVOLVED IN VOLUNTEERING. YOU VOLUNTEERED AT VARIOUS SITES, COMPANIES, LOCATIONS. WHAT DOES VOLUNTEERING MEAN TO YOU? I was a scout and since then I have always enjoyed helping and caring for others. For me, volunteering is a permanent principle of mutual help and concern for others. Throughout my life, I have always been enrolled and participated in volunteer activities in all the companies I worked for, as well as in actions developed by the community where I live. It may seem like a cliché, but I always gained more than I gave, life is a great lesson, we all need everyone! I learned from my first

21

manager, my dear friend Santos Silva, that it takes a lot of patience and resilience to lead teams, and since then, when I took up my first management position, I followed his advice: listen to the concerns and what the career goals of each contributor are. To obtain these answers, with simplicity, is enough to listen to them and then make decisions that help them achieve the objectives they propose within what is imposed as the institution’s objective.

YOU WERE ENROLLED AT ISCET IN MARKETING AND ADVERTISING, BUT DROPPED OUT TO GO TO BANKING. WHAT LED YOU TO CHANGE AREAS AND GIVE UP ON THE COURSE? What made me change areas at that moment was the search for the economic independence from my parents, although I really liked my work in banking and the principles that it contained at that time. However, the taste for marketing and advertising was always present, and alongside that activity I was also exercising in this area, developing numerous projects. Over the years the principles

22

I believed in banking have changed, I stopped seeing myself as a person in this work and then dedicated myself full time only to the area of marketing, advertising and new technologies.

YOU WERE LINKED TO BANKING FOR OVER 20 YEARS. DURING THIS TIME, DID YOU MANAGE TO ACHIEVE WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO, YOUR GOALS? During the time I worked at the bank, not only did I fulfill the objectives that were proposed to me, but I often exceeded them. As I mentioned in the previous answer, for a long time I reviewed myself professionally in the values that the bank defended, and this constituted a stimulus to increasingly improve my performance, leading great teams and obtaining excellent results. When the situation changed, and certain values changed, with which I did not identify and which I refused to follow, because I considered it ethically reprehensible, I ended up being a victim of bullying at work, which led me to leave this area.

YOU LEFT WHEN YOU WERE MANAGER OF ONE THE BANK’S BRANCHES. WHAT MADE YOU LEAVE? Continuing with the answer given to the previous question, the reasons that led me to leave were the fact that I did not identify with the unethical principles of certain people with whom I had a professional relationship in the banking sector, which slipped into the practice of the aforementioned moral harassment and consequently led me to the decision of my departure.

YOU ARE THE FOUNDER OF ASSEDIUS.PT. WHAT LED YOU TO FOUND THIS COMPANY? WHAT DOES THIS PLATFORM CONSIST OF? First of all, the main reason behind the creation of this platform was the fact that I myself have been a victim of bullying in the workplace and I have known firsthand the harmful effects that such harassment entails. Then I challenged Dr. Noémia Carvalho to write the book “Labor Harassment – When work imprisons”, entirely dedicated to the topic of harassment and also with my personal testimony. As I really like people and sharing everything I know, I ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

decided to gather everyone and all the information I had to start developing a platform for the internet and thus Assedius was born. The platform consists of an absolutely private technological mechanism, which lives on its own capital, absolutely independent of ideologies or established powers. The main function of this platform is the impartial reception and impartial treatment of cases arising from moral and/or sexual harassment in the workplace, consisting of both legal and psychological guidance for the victims of these behaviors. The main objective is the prompt and effective resolution of the individual degradation that the victim of harassment suffers.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST DIFFICULTIES YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED SINCE LAUNCHING THIS PLATFORM? The biggest difficulty encountered was its public dissemination in the media, in public and private institutions, because without subterfuge, the topic is still a taboo in Portuguese society. Despite everything, having JUNE 2022

the notion that we are still doing “the path of stones”, the evolution has been positive and constant.

WHAT IS THE PROFILE OF THE VICTIMS WHO TURN TO YOU AND RESULTS?

Despite everything, having the notion that we are still doing “the path of stones”, the evolution has been positive and constant.”

Now, with 5 years of experience, we have a perception of the entire journey of victims who come to us. This problem is transversal, ranging from street sweepers to management positions. Harassment usually happens more between bosses and subordinates, but there are also cases between peers and subordinates about bosses, the latter being less common. Nobody is safe! After the first consultation, everyone is clarified and more relieved, since from then on they have our support and can appeal whenever they wish. In the most serious cases, a 24-hour telephone number is provided to follow up the victim. Victims are always very grateful for our work and we occasionally receive calls to inform them of the development of the situation. Unfortunately, the largest number of victims is still

23

among women and among these those who have positions of relevance, responsibility and that require competence. Easy targets for those who want to denigrate their professional image in order to achieve their job.

of all for the victims who often resort to sick leave, for the companies or institutions where they work, and ultimately for the State that is all of us.

ASSEDIUS.PT ALSO HAS REGINA SAMPAIO (LAWYER), NOÉMIA CARVALHO AND SILVIA CORAZZA (PSYCHOLOGIST), WHO ACCOMPANY THE VICTIMS. HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS FOLLOW-UP?

The main objective is to solve the individual problem of each of the victims. Having been one of them, I know well the importance of that. For this, there was a need to fill a void that existed in the fight against harassment in our country, with an absolutely exempt platform that deals globally with the victims’ problems, that is, at the legal level and at the mental health level. We intend to be a reference in this field, differentiating ourselves from all the public and semi-public institutions that already exist, all with the aim of raising awareness, preventing, solving and combating a phenomenon in full growth in our society, which is today considered the exhausted society.

The Assedius.pt team also counts on the collaboration of two more jurists (Dr Filipa Leal and Dr Diana Maria Nunes who also holds the position of CLO) and an administrative collaborator (Mário Bessa). The importance of this team is, as mentioned in the previous point, the guidance, the help of the victims with the resource of very experienced professionals in this matter, with the primary aim of solving the labor contingency but mainly in helping to solve the health issue/illness that harassing behavior inevitably causes in victims and their families or close people. I add to these facts an economic loss, first

The founders of the program intend to promote literacy and scientific culture in Portuguese society, bringing science closer to the society and anchoring the project to such important concepts as the humanization of science and circular education. Since its launch, more than 400 scientiststudent connections have been established across mainland Portugal and the Azores Islands, and 70% of the children who participated in the first year of implementation of the program met a scientist for the first time. Based on a proximity logic, the program brings

CHRONICLE

Isabelle de Oliveira

T

he poet Friedrich von Schiller once wrote that “Language is the mirror of a nation.” And it’s in this mirror of nations with guests from different parts of the world, but with the issue of Lusophony very present and at the center of our concerns and motivations,

42

that the International Economic Forum took place, also giving impetus to the mission of the Instituto do Mundo Lusófono (Lusophone World Institute) (IMLus). This Forum was a stage for analysis, debate of ideas and proposals in the pursuit of a dynamic of construction of a Lusophone

ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

economic space, which is also a reflection of the best we do in the Lusophone world at many other levels. At the right time, the Strategy and Economic Development Department of the Instituto do Mundo Lusófono decided to organize this initiative, making it possible to intensify ties and promote business opportunities. Lusophony represents a world-economy, emerging in several aspects and forms a geographical area with stable borders and a political, linguistic and cultural ecosystem. The common denominator of this great Lusophone concept of prosperity is, without a doubt, the Portuguese language, a language of culture and diplomacy, but also an entrepreneurial language of the future, spoken by 60% of young people under 30 years old, learned daily by more than 100 million students and the fourth most used language on the Internet.

JUNE 2022

May 5th was established by UNESCO as World Portuguese Language Day, something very important but more needs to be done because we know the influence of the Portuguese language in the world in all its dimensions: political, cultural, educational, economic, media, scientific, technical, geographical, sports, among others, while ensuring the promotion of the common values of Portuguese-speaking peoples. We know that sharing a language is an important negotiation facilitator. The Portuguese language could become a fluid and radiant network of solidary economic cooperation among its hundreds of millions of speakers, something that has not been properly developed. In this Forum, this issue has been addressed many times and the fact that a real investment and appreciation of the language as a huge potential for other dimensions has not

43

yet been made, as I mentioned before, far beyond the economy, in the case of culture, citizenship, among others … But at this international Forum, economics was the subject of analysis, involving distinguished speakers and participants: diplomats, policymakers, economists, specialists in the field of finance, entrepreneurs, scholars in the field of sociology, communication, academics, association leaders, public managers and deprived of the Lusophone and Francophone world, that is, to give voice to latinhood. It was well understood how fundamental it is to look at the challenges that lie ahead, but also at our abilities, idiosyncrasies, capacity for dialogue and the ability to dream. Yes, many interventions focused on this ability to dream of a more sustainable and humanist future, values that the Lusophone and Francophone world embrace. In fact, after two consecutive crises, as is the case of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in

44

Ukraine, we could not, we should not close our eyes to the global consequences that resulted and the question was imposed, how can Lusophony position yourself in this changing world? Crises, as highlighted in several interventions, showed weaknesses, revealed unreliable partnerships, wrong investments, but they are also unique windows of opportunity, and must be seen not only from the side of fatality, but also from the opportunity. Opportunity to do things differently, to do more, to transform, to reinvent ourselves. Looking to other partners, trusting countries that have the same identity and values and not allowing dependencies like it has happened until now with vaccines, and later, with oil, gas and cereals. In fact, if the weak autonomy of countries led to a critical situation, the same happened with countries that were extraordinarily focused on a single area of development, such as tourism, for example. It is necessary, as our distinguished speakers concluded, there must be greater plurality and less dependence. Many speakers presented the potential of their

ON STARTUPS MAGAZINE

countries, such as Brazil or Angola, with so many resources awaiting greater cooperation between the Portuguese-speaking world. This urgency for cooperation, a word that has been repeated many times, as well as the word inclusion, has brought to the debate the very wise African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go in a group”. We will go far with partners who cherish common values, such as democracy and human rights, and are linked by affection. Training and education (youth and adults), digital transformation, were also defined as pillars in this new world. In fact, the potential of each country and the desire to invest in cooperation allow us to rebalance the world in another way, through partnerships that promote a sustainable economy, with a view to Development rather than growth, guided by the defense of Human Rights. IMLus is also proof that noble projects can be created from civil society and with the support of the business world, which plays a decisive role here, and only in this way can we take the colors of lusophony even further, writing a new page of Lusofonia, more modern and progressive. I can conclude that with this International Economic Forum we were able to fulfill the objectives proposed by the IMLus: to develop knowledge in the great stakes of the globalization of economies, enhancing relations between the Portuguese-speaking world, strengthening ties between the Portuguese-speaking and French-speaking communities - an opportunity for the meeting of economic decision-makers and entrepreneurs, in order to exchange ideas on JUNE 2022

new perspectives for entrepreneurship, giving visibility to companies, encouraging and facilitating business opportunities (market economy, green economy, blue economy, social economy, sport economy, tourism economy, cultural and creative industries. From the analysis of the situation to the debate of ideas, there were very interesting proposals. The common wish was to hold a Forum with a suggested theme. In this world in permanent mutation, with constant challenges that force us to make resilience, sometimes, the only possible weapon to face the challenges, there are

45

people and institutions of excellence and, I would say, extraordinary, that are moved by philanthropy and by the values of humanism, which change the way we see and perceive the world and which, ultimately, lead us to believe in the dream of a society and a better world! Thus, IMLus wanted to honor individuals who stand out in various areas, inspiring people, to whom we gave trophies and became our Ambassadors: the great international player Daniel Alves of FC Barcelona, the businessman Luís de Sousa, known as our Portuguese Bill Gates, the fantastic Maria Alice Medina, Founder of Rock in Rio and the illustrious sociologist Sabah Abouessalam Morin, wife of the universal thinker Edgar Morin. Considered distinguished personalities as Honorary Members for their mission in favor of the Institute’s values, such as Vítor Ramalho, Horácio Barra, João Pimenta, António Laranjeira, Dominique Restino, Aguinaldo Jaime, Bruno Lair, Gonçalo Nuno Santos, Maurício Santos, Tomás Pinto Gonçalves, Paulo Pereira. And the Sponsors were thanked for without them this memorable event would

46

not have been possible, awarding him medals for his noble action in favor of Lusophony. Finally, I would also like to point out that this Forum was also a milestone in the history of the Institute and the creation, in Portugal, of the IMLus will count on the support of institutions and companies, on its way to continue to grow towards a universal lusophony in partnership with all those who already work for the same cause. I cannot fail to mention the golden key reserved for the closing session: the virtual presence of the former President of Brazil, Dr. José Sarney, with an emotional message, full of meaning and inspiring for all of us to whom we are very grateful. I thank all those who believed in this idea, who said they were present and who were willing to share, in the beautiful Centro Cultural de Belém, all this proactive and certainly differentiating knowledge.
