‘Struggle for survival’ UNATHI OBOSE

A

total of about 32 car related accident survivors, assault victims and others who have suffered head injuries due to sports related clashes, across the Cape Flats, including their minders, attended a workshop which was held at the Look Out Hill in Khayelitsha last Thursday.

It emerged during the workshop that more than 600 locals have suffered brain damage as a result of these mishaps, this year alone.

It also emerged that people with neurological challenges are, to the worst, most likely to be discriminated against in their own communities, and the workshop was held to eradicate any stigma associated with brain damaged survivors, and rehabilitate them back to society.

According to Godfrey Toringepi, the programme’s manager at HeadsUp: “Most injuries occur in car accidents, physical assaults or while people were playing sport (like rugby or wrestling).”

HeadsUp is a non-governmental organisation with offices in Philippi, Mfuleni, Manenberg and Mowbray. They work with brain damaged survivors, and offer counselling to survivors and relatives alike.

He added that survivors are often discriminated against in their own community.

“We want to eradicate any stigma associated with brain damage and get the survivors back into society.

“We offer rehabilitation programmes, like counselling, spearheaded by social workers, who assist survivors in their journey to recovery,” he said. “

Nomthandazo Cawe, from TR informal settlement in Site B, said she suffered a brain injury after a shack fire.

“My whole body was engulfed in flames after our stove burst ... l have a problem with memory loss and am quick to anger. However, with the help of HeadsUp, I do manage to deal with my anger, still, the community calls us names.” she added painfully.”

Toringepi said support groups meet every Thursday to discuss challenges and seek solutions to them.

“We also visit local clinics and conduct regular talk shops to raise awareness about people suffering form brain injuries.

The problem is that brain injuries are invisible and people will pick up such cases through the actions of the victims, Toringepi offered.

Brain injuries can either lead to disabilities or paralysis.

“Some survivors lose their memory. Others display behavioural pattern changes and can even abuse alcohol excessively and become aggressive during a drunken stupor.

The injuries also manifest themselves in inappropriate behaviour, leading them to streak in public,” he said.

Other injuries become visible in the way the patients walk. Fatigue can also set in easily.

“In Khayelitsha alone, we are assisting more than 30 brain damaged patients,” said Toringepi.

Police, NGO gifts victims SIYABONGA KALIPA

amilies and friends of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, scored timely Christmas gifts after the Gift of the Givers and the South African Police Service(Saps) handed over to them food parcels and other essentials.

Gift of the Givers delivers life saving aid in the form of search and rescue teams, medical personnel, equipment, supplies, medicines, vaccines, anti-malarial medication, high energy and protein supplements, food and water to millions of people in disaster struck areas

around the world.

Police minister Bheki Cele was on hand for the handover at the police academy in Philippi on Tuesday.

In addition, five wheelchairs were also given to needy family members. According to a statement, this was done to show support to families of police who died in the line of service.

Food parcels, party packs and a hot meal was on offer for the day.

Cele, who indicated that he had visited families of slain police officers, thanked Gift of the Givers for their support. He added that as the government, they keep in touch with the families to find out how the

“Corrupt” test officers arrested for fraud STAFF REPORTER On Wednesday, the Hawks, swooped on the Lingelethu Driving Licence and Testing Centre, arresting seven employees (six civilians and a security guard) for alleged fraud and corruption.

Mayco member for Safety and Security and Social Services J.P Smith said the suspects are expected to appear in court soon, but

could not be specific.

He added that the City would also conduct internal disciplinary processes, running parallel to the criminal charges.

“We have zero tolerance approach to staff misconduct and thank the Hawks for helping the City to ensure that we run a clean administration,” he said.

The Hawks had not responded to City Vision at the time of going to print.

Big business helps launch new facility SIYABONGA KALIPA

A

R2.6 million Treatment and Assessment Centre - a special needs facility aimed at the hearing impaired and autistic learners - was opened at the Noluthando School for the Deaf last Friday.

As a result, about 300 children will benefit from the facility, after it was identified that a separate centre to accommodate the medical, professional, speech therapists, audiologists and physiotherapists was needed in the area.

Previously, all therapists utilised whichever spaces were available in the school complex.

The new centre provides spaces, observation rooms, offices and ablutions.

Ayanda Ncinane, the school principal, said as a resource centre, one of their duties is to support neighbouring schools through outreach programmes.

“This centre will enable our professional team to extend their services to the sur-

rounding community of Khayelitsha,” he said.

He said they have already identified schools they were going to help in the new year.

The funders of the project are well-known Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages, the Western Cape Department of Education, The Ackerman Educational Trust, Trellidor and MM Foundation of Lichstein.

Victor Poole, from Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages, said they have invested a huge capital into the project as a way of giving back to the community. He said it was critical for the company to give back to communities that support their products.

Wendy Ackerman, founder of the Ackerman Educational Trust, said she saw the need to help learners from the school and decided to donate some money for the new facility.

“When I was asked to help, I could not refuse because helping the disadvantaged is my way of giving back,” she said.

Donations are still flooding in for the aid efforts geared towards shack fire victims of SST informal settlement in Town Two, just in time for the Christmas rush.

CCFM Community Radio Stationwhich is a Christian radion station servicing believers around Cape Town- also threw in their lot in the basket last Saturday, donating clothing, food parcels and nappies to the victims.

The event took place at a tent opposite the Town Two informal braai area. In October, around 342 shacks were ravaged by fire in the area, leaving more than a thousand people homeless. Fortunately, there was only one loss of life in the aftermath.

Magic works wonders for Sesona UNATHI OBOSE

Y

oung magician Sesona Gagana from Makhaza is thrilled after the realisation that his dream of becoming a professional magician may ring true after he received a Siegfried and Roy Scholarship to further his studies with the College of Magic in Claremont, come next year.

Siegfried & Roy are a German-American duo of magicians and entertainers, who became known for their appearances with white lions and white tigers.

Gagana will be undergoing his final year (Course Six) of study at the college in 2019.

The College of Magic is a non-profit organisation which teaches magic tricks to people from various levels of society, with the goal of creating social empowerment.

The 15-year-old, currently doing Grade nine at Harry Gwala High School in Makhaza, said he couldn’t believe his ears when he was told of the news.

“This is what I’ve been dreaming of; to become a professional magician. Now that I’ve received this scholarship, it’s another stepping stone towards my dream,” he said.

Since Gagana started at the school of magic at the age of 10 in 2013, he has never looked back.

“I started with course one in July 2013, and continued in 2014 with course two from January to July. I progressed to an advanced course till December.

For the whole of 2015 I did course three, and in 2016 I did a Junior Magician Diploma.

Then in 2017 I did doing course four. And this year I was doing Course Five.

“The scholarship will pay for all the fees,” stated Gagana. He said he was inspired by a neighbour during street performances.

“I used to watch him during his performances; so the other day I asked him where to go if I wanted to acquire the same skills, and all fingers pointed to the college.

“But I first had to obtain the consent of my parents, he insisted.” Gagana said he is able to balance his studies and his performances.

“I don’t have a problem with my studies because during the week I focus on books and attend the College on Saturdays.

In October, he was one of the few learners who attended a show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and New York, both in the United States of America, to watch magic shows.

“We stayed for a week in Las Vegas and another week in New York. Among the magicians that we met in Las Vegas was Terry Fator, Mat Franco, David Copperfield, Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn. In New York we met Joshua Jay and Jack Diamond,” he said.

This year, in June, he performed at the ‘Imagine Show’ at the Arts Cape, while in 2016 he once performed at V&A Waterfront, entertaining tourists there. Thandiswa Gagana(43), his mother, described her son as humble and a hard worker.

“He is passionate with what he is doing.

And once he puts his mind to something, nobody can stop him. But I’m so excited now that he has a scholarship to further his studies,” said Thandiswa. The mother of four children said they’ve been struggling to support all the children as they don’t have stable

job. “His father is doing odd jobs and I sell amagwinya, sweets and ice cream. But we ensure that whenever he is performing, we attend the shows,” said Thandiswa.

Drivers rewarded for saving lives S

afe drivers have been rewarded for transporting learners safely.

Childsafe SA, a non-profit organisation promoting optimal health and development of all children under the age of 18, held an awards ceremony on Saturday two weeks ago in recognition of drivers who have met their commitments in safe driving and responsibly, while transporting children to and from school.

The annual ceremony is held under the Safe Travel to School programme.

The programme was launched in Athlone in 2015, with just 17 drivers. Now more than 800 drivers take part in the programme and transport around 10 000 learners daily in Cape Town.

“This means that there are a significant number of drivers who are trained in first aid, defensive driving, general road safety, child safety and stress management, and committed to being the safest drivers they can be. And they are spreading the word to other scholar transport drivers,” says Kay Jaffer, project coordinator for the Safe Travel to School programme.

“Another positive impact is that not a single fatality has been reported by the drivers on our programme. Evidence from the monitoring of scholar transport drivers’ driving behaviour indicates that the drivers on our programme drive more safely than the average private Cape Town driver. This is based on scores from Discovery Insure whose patented DQ tracking device is installed in all their clients and are installed in the vehicles of the drivers on the Safe Travel to School programme as well.”

The Safe Travel to School project is a joint initiative between Childsafe and Discovery Insure. The project is aimed at making travel to and from school safer for children. It targets school transport drivers, and is designed to motivate them to change their driving behaviour and improve their road safety awareness and knowledge. The programme offers incentives to those who comply with road traffic laws and improve their driving.

When drivers join the programme, their vehicles are fitted with a DQ-Track tracking device, which monitors their driving behaviour 24/7. Based on the data gathered, drivers are scored on their braking, speed, acceleration and other metrics.

Under the programme, drivers are awarded for exemplary driving every three

“The programme is a response to the many horrific road crashes we see involving schoolchildren,” says Prof. Sebastian van As, chairperson of the Childsafe SA Board and head of the Paediatric Trauma Unit at Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“Thousands of children are killed on our roads every year, and in most cases, it is because of driver error. Often scholar transport drivers have a bad reputation. Some overload their vehicles and drive recklessly in vehicles that are often not roadworthy.

The Safe Travel to School programme aims to help change that.

Drunk drivers will be in the spotlight Traffic officers of the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and other Law Enforcement agencies will have their hands full making our roads safer over the holiday period.

There will again be a strong focus on curbing alcohol consumption as part of the department’s #BoozeFreeRoads campaign.

The importance of a wide-awake, sober driver cannot be over-emphasised and it goes without saying that drivers should refrain from using alcohol when getting behind the wheel, regardless of how far they will be driving, the department says in a statement.

Driving under the influence will remain a strong focus for law enforcement and road safety awareness efforts, the statement says, and too often the role of alcohol in pedestrian road deaths does not get the same attention.

More than 600 pedestrians are killed on Western Cape roads every year – 49% of the total road fatalities. Over 60% of pedestrian corpses tested showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of death. Most fatalities occurred on weekend nights.

“The simple fact is that alcohol and roads don’t mix,” says Kenny Africa, DTPW Traffic Management chief director.

“Whether you are driving, walking, or riding a motorbike or bicycle, don’t drink. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair your ability to make decisions, operate a vehicle, or walk safely near traffic. If you have friends or family who still drive or walk under the influence, speak to them before someone gets killed or injured. Be a model of responsible behaviour for other road users to follow.”

In addition to ongoing alcohol blitz operations, a special force of Random Breath Testing (RBT) traffic officers will be deployed over this time to stop and test drivers at all times of the day, and at random locations. This effort to curb the scourge of driving under the influence has been strengthened by the Mobile Alcohol Evidentiary Unit. This specialised vehicle is fitted with equipment that can collect evidence next to the side of the road for use in criminal prosecutions.

Now a father himself, he says he started filling venues with giggles from the age of 13.

“I was just a boy; I got up at a Sabbath dinner and told a story. People laughed, and I felt love and adoration, and the rest is overcompensating history,” he recalls.

He says that over the years, the industry has changed drastically and has developed to a point where it is “just old enough so you can actually aspire to do comedy for a living, and just new enough that you can still break new ground and make an impact.”

In order for him to remain relevant, he says he continuously writes new material every year and learns from fresh talents.

“I also connect with younger acts – this is a two-way street where I can give them an opportunity and I can be exposed to their way of thinking and seeing the world.”

He also draws inspiration from his love of travelling the country and making new “weird” friends in new “weird” towns.

Amidst his performance schedule, Rabinowitz says he finds pleasure in acting as an MC at charity events twice a month.

His greatest achievements so far have been performing internationally, including at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and being featured on UK TV show Mock the Week.

“And most recently being interviewed by my children who somehow managed to get a talk show before me. I’m so proud of them and so disappointed in myself,” he jokingly says.

This festive season, Rabinowitz returns to The Baxter, a home to his shows for many years, to perform in Dry White, in which he says he explores Cape Town’s water crisis.

etball coaches and players from the Cape Flats gathered at the Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium last Saturday for coaching clinics organised by Spar Protea Netball player Phumza Maweni.

Some members who attended the event were from Strand, Langa, Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha.

Phumza used to be a defender for the Vultures Netball team from Site C. She said the aim of the clinics was to give back to the community and share her experi-

ence with young players.

The lanky defender said she will be joining an Australian outfit known as Sunshine Coast Lightning in 2019.

“This year I was playing in United Kingdom in a Vital Super League for Seven Stars, for the second time because I was playing in the same league in 2015 for Loughborough Lightning,” she declared.

She added she wanted to ensure that when she leaves for Europe next month, she leaves behind a vast knowledge of netball.

“I’ll ensure that when I come back, I do a follow up to continue where I left off.

“Next year, on my return, I plan to have coaching clinics at least three times a year,” said Phumza.

Vultures Netball coach Cecillia Zinkumbi congratulated Phumza for the move to Australia, saying she expects her to put Khayelitsha on the map.

During the sessions she taught players netball skills and how to behave on and off the field.

She has encouraged them to keep on exercising all the time in order to stay fit.

Zinkumbi said the Vultures have produced a lot of players for the province.

“Phumza used to play for us, and is the only person who has managed to play for the national team and abroad.

This year, five players plied their skills for the province, but four have withdrawn because of lacking of funding.

Zinkumbi added that when a player is selected, they have to pay for their own fares.

Lisa Nyamza (17), who plays for the Dynamites Netball Club in Khayelitsha, described the coaching clinics as beneficial for emerging players.

“She taught us the basic skills and communication on and off the field.” Nyamza said.

he second leg of the Sevens World Series took place at Cape Town Stadium over the weekend.

Capetonians came out in their numbers, with 107 905 people descending on the venue over the two days.

Among them was Lansdowne’s Hanita Rama. She bought into the spirit of the occasion and came dressed up as a superhero.

“This is the biggest costume party of the entire year. If you want to see any costume or any idea that is going on – people plan in advance for this stuff,” she said, encouraging those who will attend next year’s event to dress up.

“Get a costume, because last year we came without a costume and I felt so out of place.

You have to dress up. It is part of the whole theme of the day. It is the culture of Sevens,” she said.

Michelle Abrahams from Muizenberg has been a patron of the event for the last three years and never ceases to be excited.

“It is exciting, because I enjoy the game.

I love the atmosphere, I love being here with all the excitement. It is something to look forward to every year. Those who are not here are losing out big time,” she said.

Unfortunately, the hopes of the expectant home crowd were dashed when the Blitzboks fell short in the semi-finals, losing 17-12 to Fiji, who eventually went onto secure the title, the fourth different winner of the competition since its move from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in 2015.

Coach Neil Powell’s charges had to settle for the bronze medal, beating New Zealand 10-5 in the play-off for third place.

Despite the result, Powell believes there is cause for optimism.

“We asked for an improvement and that is what we got this weekend. That match against Fiji could have gone any way, that is the message I carried over to them. We had chances, Fiji had chances and missed a few and so did we. They used the chances which mattered. I am glad that we could end on a win, it will do a lot for the team’s confidence,” he says.

Powell laments that the departure of key players such as Seabelo Senatla, Kwagga Smith, Ruhan Nel, Dylan Sage and Rosco Specman, who will join up with the Bulls for Super Rugby, has meant that much of the team has needed to be rebuilt. Injuries have also hampered the team’s progress, with

captain Philip Snyman sustaining a knock to his shoulder which ruled him out of the knockout phase of the tournament. Snyman’s absence meant that Kyle Brown stood in to lead the team for the rest of the tournament.

Brown, who has suffered serious knee injuries in the last two seasons, was elated to return to action and said that playing for the Blitzboks still means a great deal.

“You often question why you do these things and you question why you go through pre-seasons the way you do and go through tournaments getting beat up the whole time.

The moment we lost that game to Fiji in the semi-final, I was incredibly emotional, because, for one, I think, we could have beat-

With the current team, where they are right now, to be able to say we could have beaten Fiji at this place makes me very optimistic about the future.

The fact that I am still getting emotional about things after games- because I don’t know how many times I am going to play in Green Point again.

I don’t know how many times I am going to play in front of this Cape Town stadium crowd.

It just shows for me inside that it still means a heck of a lot to me. I am incredibly grateful just to be able to put the boots on and get out on the field and contribute a bit,” says Brown, who hopes Snyman’s injury is

He says the current squad will continue to grow and improve the more tournaments they play, but that Cape Town is a sharp learning curve for them, with Brown citing unforced errors for their eventual elimination.

“First you are going to learn by losing the game; in front of your home crowd in a semifinal you could have won.

That has to hurt ... With that you bring some growth. Unfortunately we have to be part of that growth and unfortunately we have to walk that path, because you can’t emulate game situations in practice all the time. It is impossible. If we could, it would be an easy day out there.”
