T

he house of a woman who allegedly suffers abuse at the hands of her children was given a new lease on life after it was given a face-lift and she was donated groceries.

The event took place in Site B, C Section in Khayelitsha on Thursday last week.

Dina Morungwe Monatisi,55, was visited by members from the Community Work Programme(CWP), who also painted and cleaned her house.

Mfundo and Mshayi Mbeki, owners of the Rands open-air tavern donated groceries to Monatisi.

CWP’s Zikho Mase said they were touched to learn about Monatisi’s living conditions and decided to extend a helping hand.

“We wanted to do a difference in her house. We wanted to show her that we care.

We also help clean police stations, crèches, schools and houses for elderly people,” Mase said.

Mfundo said they felt that there was a need to be part of the team that is changing Monatisi’s life after they were approached by members of CWP. “We grew-up here, we stay here and we do business here in this community so we see the need of helping those who need help. We are part of the community. We also understand that she and her son do not have IDs (Identity Documents) so we promised to intervene as well,” he said.

The Mbeki brothers also replaced the door handles to the house which were allegedly damaged by the beneficiary’s offspring.

Monatisi said the help came at a time she needed it the most.

“My children abuse me. They call me a witch. I do not have an ID now because it was burnt. I will have to hide the grocery, because they are going to take it. One of them once put sand in my food, and I’m not right.”

City speeds up service delivery MBONGISENI MASEKO

P

rojects which have been put on hold in Khayelitsha are set to resume and the wheel of service delivery is set to run even faster.

This was announced by Councillor Anda Ntsodo, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area East, during a community dialogue session, which focused on service delivery.

The dialogue, which was attended by residents from different sections of the area was held at Andile Msizi Hall, in Site B, Khayelitsha, last Tuesday.

Ntsodo was accompanied by councillors from different Wards in Sub-council 9, 10, and 24.

“This initiative is in accordance with the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan (ODTP) – a process which we are implementing that will transform the work of this organisation in order to transform lives. The City wants to ignite hope through this transformation. The City is conducting a roadshow across the metro to bring attention to the key changes that the ODTP will bring.”

Residents utilised the opportunity given to them during the dialogue to raise grievances related waiting too long for houses, and the database of the city for those who are seeking jobs that sees the same residents being employed over and over again, and areas which have no electricity regardless of the promises that were made, including rats that terrorise them in the informal settlements and other burning issues in their areas.

Nzulu said some residents have been on the waiting list for over 25 years.

Another resident complained about Community Work Programme (CWP) which he said is not benefiting residents equally and suggested that it should operate under the City of Cape Town.

Ntsodo promised the residents that service delivery will be improved and that they are going to work together with street committees and all structures in communities.

should be rolled out to people. We are going to ensure that all projects that were stopped are resuming. We have already started issuing title deeds to rightful owners of houses in Khayelitsha. The rate of unemployment is very high in Khayelitsha. Over 70 percent of residents are unemployed. Our nation should be taught to be employers not employees,” Ntsodo said.

He also said the city has put aside a budget of R1.1 million under mayoral job creation programme. He said the money will be a new fund that will supplement the budged from national government for CWP. Ntsodo said they are planning to put CWP

under his office to ensure that the grievances of lack of fairness in employing residents are addressed. All departments under the City of Cape Town were present during the dialog as part of bringing services closer to residents.

Councillor Pheliswa Faba-Marman, Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor, appealed to residents to save water.

“We are in trouble with the shortage of water.

Our dams are getting dry. We need to ensure that there are no water leaks. There are 350 car washes in Khayelitsha alone, but only three of them are registered.”

Let’s be honest, though: those who will find you feasting and develop a desire to join you are probably not that hungry at that moment, and would not care even if you had last eaten 72 hours prior.

They just seem to derive some pleasure from “helping” you finish your grub.

The funny thing about these kinds of people is that in most cases, meat is always the most needed item on the platter.

That explains why some often develop the ingenious manner of placing the meat underneath the pap or rice, before asking a one to join them.

Normally, the invited person who take one look at the plate and suddenly lose all desire to eat.

So the plan would be to eat the smothered meat last.

I recall a time in our childhood when our mother would call for one to come home while playing with friends on the street.

They’d try to come after one, of course, and would be told by said mother that they were not called for.

Usually, these secret ‘mother-son’ meetings would happen on the occasion she’d come back from town or the shopping mall.

Once inside the house, mother would take out some delicacy-Kentucky Fried Chicken or fish and chips–and instruct you to sit down and feast.

At times this would be accompanied by a mild tongue-lashing along the lines of, “Sufuna ukondla ilali apha. Wena uyatya kumakwabo?”

We all loved those moments, didn’t we?

But let’s agree on one thing: that was

ukuvimba in its Higher Grade form.

This practice even reared its ugly heard during the era of “sgqa”. That was when, as kids, we’d scream “sgqa!” to whichever friend showed up in possession of some delicacy.

We’d run up to said friend, calling on him to share. However, not all of us marvelled at this sharing notion.

As soon as one uttered that dreaded word, the possessor of the delicacy would gobble up such a morsel in one go, leaving the rest of us disappointed and hungrier.

This would culminate in ‘revenge’, and so the vicious cycle continued.

I have seen grown men reduced almost to tears from being victims of ukuvimba.

Funerals are not spared, check the disproportionate allocation of food portions.

I ask myself, will we ever rid ourself of this selfish act.

Even nocturnal activities between consenting adults can also fall victim to this act of deprivation called ukuvimba.

Kath and Joe’s funerals, a tale of hairstyles I greet you in the name of peace and tranquillity.

Why, you may ask.

Akupholanga eMzantsi these days and this is a culmination of events of the past week.

If I was a political analyst or commentator I would have a field day regarding the aftermath of the decisions of our president.

I leave that to politicians to deal with and time will tell.

In the midst of all of this ruckus we bade farewell to two prominent figures in our country.

I also bid farewell to a long time friend, brother and schoolmate, Derrick Mpumelelo ‘Bubbles’ Mathe.

Their respective funerals reminded me of the book by Charles Dickens called a Tale of Two Cities.

Kathy’s funeral was so simple yet august.

There were no VIP or VVIP guests as if it is some fashion parade, with the

attendant extravagant dress code. I bet salons did not make a killing this time.

In contrast, Joe’s funeral was full of glitz and glamour, topped up by extravagance.

This has become a norm at our funerals.

In these trying times and especially now that our country has been downgraded to junk status, we need to cut on costs.

However, if you have the means then go wild and splash your bling.

Strange as it may sound, others don’t attend certain funerals because their hair or make-up is out of place.

Hewethu awuyelanga kunconywa esifihlweni! Uyokuthi ndlela ntle qha!

Art exhibit gets Iphupha going MANLDLA MAHASHE

I

n an effort to address lack of exposure for local visual and performance artists, an events company will be a holding an exhibition in the heart of Cape Town.

Iphupha Lam Improvements will be hosting The First Thursday Experience at the Onpoint Dance Studio in Loop Street today, 6 April.

At this event, local artists and performers will get a platform to exhibit their work in the CBD, an opportunity they seldom get, according to the organisers.

“Many of the township artists never get the chance to exhibit their art as the competition is always tough or sometimes the material is not the one that is sought. This makes it very difficult for them to earn from their art.

Performers only get a chance when they go to auditions and when they get rejected it is the end of the line for them.

So we want to bring them here and give them an opportunity to showcase,” said Siyabonga Mbaba.

He is the event organiser along with Khaya Ncusani. Iphupha Lam Improvements is a social enterprise company that specialises

in educational events and activities as well as business events management.

The event is held in association with Onpoint Dance studios and Homemade Gathering.

Mbaba said that the event will be more than an exhibition but a social gathering that will be enjoyed by young and old.

“We want to put together an different experience for both young and old, black and white as well as the performer and the attendee. We will play chess, have food and start conversations where artists will speak of their challenges in the arts sphere.

It will be totally different to what black people are used to as well as for the white people they will experience something not familiar in their world,” he said.

Going forward, said Mbaba, they are hoping that this event will give an opportunity for talents scouts and art gallery to spot talent.

The entrance fee for the event is R10 or a donation of as little as 10c as organisers say that this is not a money making event but money will help to assist in putting it together.

Communicators must get local media development Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has urged municipal communicators to maximise the use of community media platforms as a crucial tool in development.

“You need to communicate the good work that your municipalities are doing.

As communicators, you must also ensure that your municipal websites are updated. Brag on social media about the progress in terms of service delivery in your respective municipalities.

“The beauty of using community media is that you are able to communicate directly to citizens in their own languages.

“When you engage local communities through various community media forums to seek a broader consensus around development initiatives, a project is likely to succeed and increases a sense of ownership and the community feels empowered,” she said.

Minister Muthambi was speaking at the inaugural South African Local Government Association (Salga) National Communicators Forum in Pretoria , recentrly.

The Minister discouraged the practice of advertising municipal events on national newspapers. She told communicators that they should not only use community media when their respective mu-

nicipalities are faced with a communication crisis.

Salga CEO Xolile George said the programme of the inaugural National Communicators Forum is designed to give each participant an opportunity to collectively engage with key stakeholders in the local government sector towards a common understanding that communication is vital to effective service delivery.

“One of the objectives of the forum is also to launch the Municipal Barometer portal, which is proudly a ‘One Stop Shop for Local Level Performance Data’. The Municipal Barometer is a web-based portal aimed at collecting, packaging and disseminating readily available, easily accessible and timely local governance and development data.

“The aim of the Municipal Barometer launch is to raise awareness and showcase the features of the portal,” he said.

George said communications should be a strategic function of every municipality and should be streamlined to create an active and engaged citizenry.

“This forum is envisaged not only to influence communication operations in every municipality but also to bring about municipal policy positions that empower communication to become the pulse of service delivery,” George said.

Coop impressed ousted ministers MBONGISENI MASEKO

“T

here is a spark of hope for growth” so said two former deputy ministers who were impressed with the work of a co-operative in Khayelitsha during a visit on Thursday.

This was before President Jacob Zuma reshuffled his cabinet on the night of the same day.

Elizabeth Thabethe, then Deputy Minister of Small Business Developmet and Thoko Xaso, who was Deputy Minister of Tourism, were addressing members of the Samuel and Vinah Agriculture and Multi-purpose CoOperative.

Their visit started at the Mandalay Primary School, where they viewed the vegetable garden, and then visited a house in Mandalay in which school uniform is sewn and to the Look-out Hill where they also sew school uniforms, corporate wear and traditional outfits.

Nomvo “Vovo” Mzomba, the Chief Executive Officer at the co-op, said the visit came after the two deputies were impressed with their work when they, along with other ministers visited the area on an outreach programme in March.

“The Deputy Ministers promised to come back and see where they can assist us. They are here today to get more information about

us and what we need. Our wish is to develop.

It was not easy when we started the co-op, because we did not have space for plantation and we had no funds. We are happy about their visit. It is giving us hope for better future,” Mzomba said.

The co-op was established in 2010, but started functioning in 2013.

They have employed 45 people, including ex-offenders and those who live with disabilities, in different facilities around the province.

While growing up, Ntombi Ndayi-Balfour, 32, had a nick for baking cakes, but little did she know that her talent was going to win many hearts.

She discovered a talent for baking after she mesmerised her former colleagues at the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Courtwhere she was a casual interpreter from 2013 to January this year-with her cake baking skills.

“I was so surprised when my former colleagues asked me to bake for them and that they were going to pay me. I did not even know how much I was supposed to charge them. More orders came after that from different people and the rest is history.

She started baking at home when she was still in primary school.

“I am now focusing on building my business. I have a dream of owning a big bakery company and employ others,” said the Khayelitsha residents.

Ndayi-Balfour never attended formal training for baking and claims that it is a talent she was born with.

She sells biscuits and other kinds of cakes as a vendor at Khayelitsha Mall Taxi Rank.

A five litre bucket of biscuits with 145 units cost R150.

She was born in Mount Frere, in the Eastern Cape, but grew-up in Virginia in the Free State.

She then moved to the mother city in 2002.

Ndayi-Balfour said the business is helping her put food on the table for her two children.

“I encourage other residents to unfold their hands and start businesses. It is rewarding. I am planning to register my business and also apply for funding from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA),”. Contact her: 0832065095.

Uniform campaign gains ground MBONGISENI MASEKO

A

n organisation formed by learners from Manyano High School in Khayelitsha donated school uniform and stationery to three learners whose house was destroyed by fire.

Back to School, which is a campaign designed for helping learners in need with school uniform and stationery, made the donation available to three learners whose family house at Elweni Street, in D Section, was burnt by a mysterious fire, on 26 February.

The campaign was formed after two organisations, Ubumbano and Ambassadors of Change colluded to form Back to School campaign, in December.

Siyabulela Mkungela, 21, of Ubumbano, said they decided to work together after they realised that the two organisations had a common goal of helping children who are in need.

“We do door-to-door campaign asking for clothes and school uniform for children in need. We feel good to see that residents support our campaign. We are planning to go to all high schools and plead with Grade 12 learners to turn their school uniforms to schools once they finish writing their final exams so it will be donated to learners in need the following year,” Mkungela said.

Mkungela also said his organisation, Ubumbano, was formed last year with the

aim of unearthing modeling talent.

Bonginkosi Lize, 16, the founder of Ambassadors of Change, said he formed the organisation after he was touched seeing learners who had no school uniform.

“Not having school uniform forces learners to end up skipping school. We want to contribute positively in the lives of youth here. We also delivered clothes we collected during a door-to-door campaign at Kingdom Church of Work Ministries, on Sunday. The church is going to handover the clothes to victims of fire at Imizamo Yethu, in Hout Bay,” Lize said.

Selinah Mose, 68, said the donation will go a long way in helping her grandchildren.

“I do not have words to describe how happy I am. These children are coming to my house for the third time now. I would like to thank them. They are really helping my grandchildren,” Mose said.

The learners were accompanied by Councillor Xolisa Peter, of Ward 92, when they delivered the school uniform to the learners. Peter said she was happy to see the members of Back to School visiting her office to introduce their campaign.

“I was thrilled to see children heading such campaign. It is my dream to encourage youth to take charge in contributing positively in the society. I am going to assist them to register their organisation so that they will qualify to get assistance they need,” Peter said.

Dagga: Some say high, some low MANDLA MAHASHE n Friday last week a landmark ruling was made by the Western Cape High Court that it is an infringement to ban the use of dagga by adults in their homes.

This means that possession, cultivation and use of the age-old herb is allowed, for private use at home.

ment to change sections of the Drug Trafficking Act, as well as the Medicines Control Act. This ruling was made following an application to decriminalise the drug by the Dagga Party leader Jeremy Acton and Rastafarian Garreth Prince.

They had told the court that laws prohibiting dagga use are unfair, discriminatory, outdated, and applied disproportionately to black users.

Following this ruling has evidently become a polarizing

matter in the townships with users on cloud nine while others frowned upon this ruling.

CITY VISION took to the streets to seek the views of residents, some of whom were not even aware of the ruling.

BONGANI SPILI said: Making the use of dagga legal is not a good thing. There are many dangers that are the result of the use of drugs. I say it must remain an illegal substance.

MBULELO MINYELA said: I do not support it at all. Drugs

are harmful to the body and they should not be legal.

XOLISWA NOMBEWU said: The court should come to us and discuss with us before they allow such things. Do they know that we have a problem of children taking drugs in our communities? Do they know that these children steal our grant money because they need to pay for their addiction? This really makes me angry because I don’t feel like they considered us when they made this decision.

NOZUKILE MKHANDLA said: We already have a big drug problem in our townships which results in a lot of crimes committed. I think it is a bad idea that wasn’t thought thoroughly.

MIHLALI SOGUTYU said: I think it’s a great decision because dagga is a natural herb that has been used by our forefathers. The only downside here is drug addicts who mix dagga with hard drugs such as indumbe (Mandrax).

Over the last two years there has been an upsurge of the house music sub-culture called Gqom in provinces such as KZN, Eastern and the Western Cape.

While the other provinces are far ahead with production and the culture around this genre, one local DJ has stepped up as a frontrunner locally.

Thulani Sam, better known as Aux Womdantso, from MauMau in Nyanga East has captured the imagination of Gqom lovers with his mixes and live performances.

His mixes on social media have not only caught the attention of local music lovers, but event promoters as he has become one of the busiest jocks in town.

Despite the attention, the 27year-old IT graduate says he is still honing his skill and he is grateful that he is getting noticed.

“I’m humbled by the support that I have been getting from people.

I don’t really know what sets me apart from others apart from the fact that I just compile music for the people.

I try to play what I know will make them happy,” he said.

“I started DJying as a 17 year old and it was nothing serious, just me and my friends...we loved music and we started playing around.

It was around 2009 when I took it seriously I even went on to study sound engineering but I dropped out due to financial constraints.

I started off by playing commercial and deep house and Gqom only came back a bit later,” he said.

Sam said he is currently working on his production skills in a bid to release his own music and grow his brand.

He said that he is looking at going to Joburg to introduce his brand and see if the genre catches on.

“You know when people tell me they love my mixes and performances it feels great but sometimes it hurts because they often I should be much further in my career. All I can do is to keep working and hope that I can catch the big break soon,” he said. Sam will be on the decks this weekend on Friday at Skhaleni NY6. Beware of skelm stokvel society MANDLA MAHASHE

ocals have been warned not to invest with a stokvel that has been struggling to pay its members as far back as 2015.

Stockvel SA is a cooperation where investors put in money and gain interest just like any other stockvel, said company CEO Xolani Mkumatela.

This is despite a call made by members of the scheme who claim that they have not being paid despite the schemes promise that they will earn 1% interest on the investment a day.

A 32-year-old woman Khayelitsha who spoke to City Vision on condition of anonymity said she invested R3000 in June 2016.

“I was expecting to get my pay back after three weeks as the rules stipulates but when I started enquiring I kept on being stalled.

“Ever since then it has been delays and stories when it comes to payments.

The last straw for me was when the story kept changing.

Xolani told us that our money was lent to another company that is failing to pay back the loan and that the matter was in litigation. However, when I called the office the person who answered the phones told me about the matter being taken taxi owners, that’s where I suspected that I may have been scammed,” she said.

The woman said according to her knowledge there have been more than 100 investers in the scheme and that she was angry for being used.

“It’s hard breaking to be scammed like this because people who do this need money so when they play with us, it’s really sad,” she said.

Mkumatela refused to answer questions when called by City Vision.

Diabetes is now number one killer in the Western Cape There has been a significant increase in deaths from diabetes, which is now South Africa’s second biggest killer.

Diabetes is the number one killer of women and people living in the Western Cape.

This is according to StatsSA, which yesterday (28 Feb) released a report on the causes of death in 2015. diabetes is responsible for 5,4% of deaths in the province.

In 2013, diabetes was the country’s fifth biggest killer and health experts say that poor diet and obesity is behind its meteoric rise.

“Excessive calorie consumption and sedentary lifestyles are the main contributors to the development of diabetes,” according to endocrinologist Dr Sundeep Ruder, who said 7% of South Africans aged 21 to 79 (3.85 million people) have diabetes.

Preventable “Some people with a genetic predisposition to the disease are considered high risk, but it is largely preventable.

Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation,” added Ruder, who is a spokesperson for the Healthy Living Alliance.

Diabetes is part of the group of noncommunicable diseases– often called “lifestyle diseases” – which were responsible for over half (55%) of the 460 236 people who died in 2015.

Others include heart disease, strokes, cancer and hypertension.

People most likely to die in 2015 were aged between 60 and 64, while children aged 5 to 14 had the lowest death rate.

Two-thirds of women over the age of 65 died from an NCD, while NCDs killed almost half (48%) of men in this age group.

“For both males and females six of the top ten leading causes of death were due to non-communicable disease, accounting for 27,7% for females and 32,5% among males,” according to StatsSA. “An abundance of evidence links the intake of beverages high in sugar – like soft drinks and energy drinks – to a high risk of developing diabetes and obesity,” according to Ruder.

The StatsSA report is based on all death notification forms from the Home Affairs department’s civil registration system In 2015, the majority of the deaths (77,5%) were registered within the three days stipulated by the legislative framework.

Govt. set to help businesses The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism says it would train about 1 000 entrepreneurs to improve their business skills.

This was announced by the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, when he delivered his Budget Speech in the Western Cape legislature, last Wednesday.

“Through our Emerging Business Support Programmes, 2 000 entrepreneurs have received the training they need to pursue their ambitions.

In 2017/18, a further 1000 entrepreneurs will attend sessions across the province.

We have been able to drive this programme over the past two years through

our collaboration with ABSA, a partner which shares in our commitment to growing entrepreneurs,” he said.

Winde also said the department would continue to provide affordable Wi-Fi to ensure that entrepreneurs are enabled to participate in the new global economy and to improve their communication.

“The onset of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterised by the confluence of a wave of new technologies, is reconfiguring the world we live in.

While governments around the globe have been challenged in keeping pace with these rapid changes, they have, in the main, yielded very positive impacts. Technology is dismantling barriers to industries.

Visitors impressed with talent MANDLA MAHASHE

L

earners from Chris Hani High School in Khayelitsha received a moral boost on Monday when the University of Portsmouth Cricket Club bowled them over with some tips and techniques.

The group of 22 players arrived in the country and the trip to the Makhaza school was one of the first activities.

According to Holly Morgan the team will be in the country for 10 days touring the province and playing against local teams.

She said that they will also visit local schools to conduct training sessions and coaching clinics and so far they were pretty happy with what they found.

“The guys are pretty good and you can just see how happy the sport makes them feel.

That has made a big impact on us.

We are just gonna give them some advice and tips to help improve their game,” said Morgan.

She added that they visited Impendulo Primary School to offer coaching clinics as well.

The team also raised funds that will assist

these local schools with equipment and other needs.

Principal Madoda Mahlotshana said this would be a welcome gesture as the school lacked facilities and equipment.

The school has under 13 and 15 teams and according to Mahlotshana, are competing well despite the challenges.

“The teams are very competent and they are fairing well.

They show a great interest in the sport and we are very grateful to the University of Portsmouth for coming here today,” he said.

He said that the visit would boost morale and confidence for the boys and he hoped they learn some lessons.

“We hope that it will encourage them to succeed in the sport and see themselves touring the world because of this game,” he added.

Lizo Rosi, a grade 11 pupil, said that he learnt a few things during the training.

“They taught us new things such as new drills, exercise and some warm ups as well.

I want to show them my skills as a spin bowler as well,” he said.

Baxter back to Bafana coaching job, well, what are the odds?

Stuart Baxter is the man that SAFA wants to bring in as the head coach of Bafana Bafana, and it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve thought he was the best man for the job.

The Englishman’s first stint with the national team came between 2004 and 2005 when he was appointed as an attempt to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, however, he left before the end of his contract after he was unsuccessful in that aim.

Now, just over 11 years after he left the Bafana job, Baxter is believed to be SAFA’s favourite to take over from Shakes Mashaba, having gained several years of experience in South Africa since his last spell.

and an MTN8 gong, managing success with both the Amakhosi and SuperSport United - but how was his time with Bafana?

Baxter had a 43.4% win ratio between 2004 and 2005, winning 10 of his 23 games in charge and losing nine. Four of them ended in draws.

“But I’m happy with the result, though we could have wrapped it up in the second half with two or three goals which would have made it an extremely comfortable win.”

Help kids with Canada trip SIZWE KA BANZI

top karate coach has appealed to businesses and the community to open their hearts and wallets for two of his

charges who have been selected to fight in Canada.

Khayelitsha Gojukai master Monde Sisusa said his charges, Oritile Gxasheka,6, and Siyolise Mtshengu,12, have been selected to

an international tournament in September.

“We are very excited but also worried because these two children must raise R38 000 in order to travel to Canada,” said Monde.

He said running the club is very costly because most of the children come from families who cannot afford(the trip).

“I am appealing to anyone to assist us because we are doing all our best to keep the children occupied,” he said.

Sisusa, who trains these youngsters at the Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha from Monday to Friday said he is impressed with their development.

“In every tournament they perform very well hence we have these guys winning places in an international fight,” he said.

Mtshengu said now that the coach has done his part, she was appealing to “good Samaritans” out there to help them achieve their dreams.

“I am so happy to have been chosen(for Canada),” she said with a smile before demonstrating one of her signature kicks.

Oritile Gxasheka is a somewhat shy guy, but do not be fooled, for he possesses a kick as lethal as a mule.

“I pray that our coach can find people to help us,” he said.
