ix community based organisations each walked away with a cool R10,000 cheque courtesy of Silulo Ulutho Technologies.

Silulo Ulutho had earlier in the year won a R100,000 prize money in the prestigious BBQ Awards which is the longest running black business awards ceremony in the country.

As a condition of the award, Silulo must donate the money to a deserving cause of their choice.

For the past 14 years, these awards celebrated and recognised champions of transformation across industries.

Silulo managing director Luvuyo Rani said it was not an easy decision to choose beneficiaries.

“We receive countless letters daily asking for sponsors and we really cannot answer all of them, but when we won this award, we decided to go for the deserving projects,” said Rani.

He said they divided the prize amongst 10 organisations, six of whom are based in Cape Town and four are from Eastern Cape towns where they have branches.

“This is our way of thanking the communities that made Silulo what it is today. I know the pain of suffering, trying to make ends meet, and today I am releasing these cheques with a very warm heart,” he said.

Rani urged the benefeciaries to “help others” when it was their turn to be lucky.

Speaking at the event UDM member of parliament Nqabayomzi Kwankwa who once worked at Silulo, hailed Rani’s leadership and generosity.

“This is a man who always wants to help,” said Kwankwa.

Organisations that benefitted from the award were UYesunathi, Women at the Well, Bathandwa Day Care, Siyakhathala, Ithemba Old Age Home and Makhaza Lifestyle.

Hillsong to sing, act at Grand West Hillsong South Africa will combine acting, singing and dancing to ring in the festive season at GrandWest this weekend.

They will be presenting their 11th annual Christmas Spectacular in the Grand Arena on Saturday (17 December) at 17:00 and for three performances at 12:00, 15:30 and 19:00 on Sunday (18 December).

The show features more than 100 performers, extravagant sets and screens, dazzling costumes and a spirited musical score. The expansive Grand Arena provides a fitting venue for this festive event which attracts thousands of people every year.

Our spending habits betray Black financial investments I am sure most people are familiar with the term “ ke December boss”, especially amongst Black communities.

This term is used by most as an excuse for their reckless behaviour; spending on new clothes, braais, expensive Christmas gifts, traditional ceremonies, excessive partying and making more loans.

The term has left a lot of people broke and drowning in debt as they perceive December as a month of enjoyment and reckless spending, even if it means spending money they do not even have.

People get so caught up in the hype that it is the festive season, they forget that December is just another month in a year just like any other month.

As a result of this, a lot of people start a new year on a bad start because of December.

Here are some of the reasons, I think, why people spend a lot of money in December: Mindless competition. More money is spent competing with each other, as in who has the most expensive clothes, who has a table with the most expensive booze and women, and who has the most braais.

We compete with each other so much that we even end up

This mindlessness extends to food.

What we normally eat, is just not good enough anymore, no more tinned fish and rice or rice and chicken.

December suddenly requires us to eat multi-coloured food daily, and jelly, custard, peaches or ice cream rear their heads with every meal.

The fridge is always full; biscuits and scorns, just in case we have visitors.

Clothes. Growing up, I do not remember a December I did not receive a set of new clothes from my parents, even if it meant getting them into deep debt.

Every Christmas, new clothes are the way neighbours compete with each other and also

kids, the more expensive clothes I put on, the more it showed to my friends that I came from a family that could afford.

December should not be measured by how much money we spend, but by how much money we made or saved for personal investment.

We need to shift our minds from being consumers to being producers.

We need to spend more money investing in assets (things that will generate us more money in the long run) so that we can then celebrate every other month like its December.

We should stop competing with each other and try to collaborate and create businesses just like the retailers.

Which is why I emphasize the importance of financial literacy because financially literate people know that December is just like any other month.

They also know that the only people who benefit from the festive season spending spree are the retailers.

Teachers unhappy with circular MARY­ANNE GONTSANA

T

eachers are livid over a circular sent out by the Department of Basic Education which states that learners in Grade 7, 8 or 9 who did not achieve 40% in maths, should have their maths marks “condoned” (accepted) if they achieve 20% or above.

They said all it meant was that these learners will be promoted to the next grade, even though they would have normally failed maths and had to repeat their current grade.

Grade 9 learners who pass this way will be not be allowed to take maths in grade 10; they must instead do maths literacy.

“We are setting these children up for failure,” said a primary school teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, The teacher added: “Now we are sending children to the next grade, who didn’t fully grasp the grade they were coming from.”

“Some of these children will drop out because they cannot cope with the pressure. It is not nice for a child to fail, but at least they get to grasp what they need before getting to the next grade. They will be condoned till grade 9, then, they will be stuck in grade 10 when they can no longer get condoned”.

Also interviewed were two high school principals.

One said, “It would be better if the department would provide people to help these kids and to work hand in hand with them.”

Another said that the instruction would only cause learners to struggle even more in the next grade.

Even though he didn’t agree with the instruction, because it came from the department, he would have to comply.

He said he was also worried that learners would be happy with being promoted to the next grade because to them this would mean that they passed, when in actual fact, they did not.

Both principals felt that the circular came very late and they were already done with determining who passed. They said they heard about the issue only on Monday, December 5, and found it confusing.

A DBE statement stated that the circular had been issued urgently after reports from across the country of poor results because of the compulsory requirement of learners to achieve 40% in maths.

The DBE stated that the circular “should only be considered as an interim measure for 2016”.

Spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department Millicent Merton said it was “regrettable” that the DBE’s decision was “communicated at such a late stage in the school year”.

She said the department would engage with the DBE “on the timing of such decisions”.

Equal Education Deputy General Secretary Ntuthuzo Ndzomo said: “The question should be, what is making it difficult for these children to obtain the 40% mark, instead of taking a quick solution which might not help in the long term.

Western Cape education MEC Debbie Schaffer issued a scathing statement questioning the rationale for condoning a maths failure in

Grades 7 and 8, especially at 20%.

“At least in Grade 9 the learner has the option to take Maths Literacy until matric. In grades 7 and 8, they will be permitted to progress to Grades 8 and 9, where they will still have to take Mathematics as a subject until the end of Grade 9. How can a learner who achieves 20% be expected to pass Maths the following year or two?” questioned Schaffer.

“What we need is high-impact interventions to train teachers and bring the best possible resources to our learners. In the Western Cape, we are trying to do this with our e-learning programme, which can assist teachers and learners.

Keeping safe this summer MONIQUE DUVAL

ith a wide range of public pools and beaches across the city, Capetonians will be spoilt for choice this summer when choosing a place to cool down.

While thousands of bathers get ready to enjoy these facilities, City of Cape Town officials will have their hands full trying to ensure the safety of all.

In this week’s edition of Municipal Matters, TygerBurger chats to the City’s Mayco member for community services, Anda Ntsodo, to find out more.

The City manages 35 public pools and according to statistics, Sea Point Swimming Pool attracted the largest crowds between December 2015 and January 2016, with 38 000 patrons.

During the same period, the Retreat Swimming Pool attracted 20 000, followed by Newlands with 18 000.

Ntsodo says during the festive period, a team of 200 lifeguards will be deployed to various beaches across the city.

He also says while bathers are advised to only swim at beaches that have lifeguards, many beaches around the coastline are not suitable for swimming. This includes Three Anchor Bay, Misty Cliffs, Bakoven Beach, Rocklands, Sunset Beach and Dolphin Beach, among others.

Ntsodo says the 2015/16 summer season saw the highest influx of beach visitors in over 10 years, with more than two million people visiting local beaches between October and March, averaging more than 100 000 people per day on most days during December and January.

“This was most likely due to the heat waves and exceptionally high temperatures experienced over the peak summer months. This season, Cape Town was also

once again named the second best beach city in the world by National Geographic.

“This summer the City’s sport, recreation and amenities department implemented and improved its lifeguard strategy, which included the permanent appointment of 12 senior beach lifeguards and a seasonal appointment of more than 150 beach lifeguards.

“This strategy also saw the recruitment of more than 150 Expanded Public Works Programme workers as beach buddies at various beaches for the season, who assisted the lifeguards at beaches over the peak season.”

He says, taking into consideration the high number of beach visitors this season, it is quite remarkable to note that only 18 drownings occurred between October 2015 and March 2016 on City beaches.

outs were reported at City beaches. This equates to one drowning for every 17 neardrowning incidents at beaches. Lifeguards assisted with more than 400 first-aid incidents.”

Responding to questions, he says one drowning incident occurred at the Bellville Swimming Pool on 1 January 2016 and involved a 54-year-old man.

“It was thought to have been the result of either a heart attack or a stroke. The man dove into the pool, but did not resurface from the bottom. Lifeguards pulled him to safety and administered CPR, but sadly could not revive him.”

Ntsodo says among some of the main challenges faced by the City during summer, are unsupervised children, rip currents and alcohol consumption.

He says while they are committed to the safety of pool and beach users, they ask that parents and guardians share this responsibility and work in collaboration with officials by keeping an eye on their children.

Meanwhile, he says, alcohol is one of the leading causes of drowning and is a concern for the City.

“Every year the City’s Law Enforcement officers confiscate large amounts of alcohol from our beaches. However, the problem of people swimming while under the influence of alcohol persists. Not only does this behaviour place those who are under the influence in danger, but also other swimmers and those lifeguards tasked with ensuring their safety. We urge residents not to allow family members and friends to go into the water if they have consumed alcohol and to report any intoxicated beachgoers to the lifeguard or Law Enforcement officer on duty,” he concludes.

The problem is deeper than that.

We should first eliminate the manufacturers, the dealers and the need to use drugs will, in turn, be eliminated.

Killing the children does not make the problem go away.

Their challenges have to do with the peer pressure phenomenon.

We cannot solve a problem by applying the same mentality which was used to create it.

As parents we should encourage our kids when they go to school to learn to think.

Often times I hear people saying talk is cheap, but doing things practically is a completely different game.

I have also come to the conclussion that nothing is impossible.

To know something and think about it then come to a sound conclusion is what works.

Its not easy but it can be done. True knowledge is never based on emotions, rather investigate the veracity of the facts in front of you.

Generations of children in primary schools have been taught the true or false drill, which does not help their intellectual growth.

Children should be exposed to questions that challenge their intellectual capabilities. I once overheard a discussion between elders about the drug problem in our streets and the only solution they came up with was that those kids should be killed because they

Netter’s long walk to freedom SPINDOG MOTSAMAI

L

ike all stories, this story begins in the traditional way.

Once upon a time, JG Fernandes generously donated 15% of his fishing rights to his crew - at no cost to them.

Trusts were formed for the purpose of holding the shares for the fishermen. In 2005 these trust decided to embark on their empowerment route by voting to change entitlement to be for Black fishermen only.

These trusts evolved over the years and in 2010 the trustees realised that they had outgrown their baby shoes and needed to make some “big” business decisions to ensure continued existence and profitability within the dynamic framework of the fishing industry.

It was then decided to unite the fishermen to form the Lusitania Empowerment Trust (LET). This has been a deliberate effort to establish a more efficient, cost effective and economically prudent entity with diversified investments across various fishing sectors.

The trustees are convinced that the consolidation of the different trusts’ fishing interests would benefit more Black fishermen.

The LET structure allows previously disadvantaged fishermen who are actively working at sea to benefit from their direct efforts.

They are not only earning a living by getting but are actually seeing ownership being transferred to those who participate making a greater success of fishing ventures.

With the pooled reserve funds, the trustees have been able to invest funds in 2011 to acquire 40% of the shares in a BBBEE venture called Ntabethemba Fishing.

This has not only had the normal expected benefit of dividends but will see indirect benefits flowing to the beneficiary employees in the future.

It will create an opportunity for the fishermen to achieve greater earnings from the fishing rights of the new venture.

In 2012 The Lusitania Empowerment Trust and other shareholders within the deep sea hake operations sold this part of the business to the Oceana Group of companies and big amounts were paid on behalf of the

fishermen and their beneficiaries.

The trustees then decided to distribute a million rand of the proceeds to the beneficiaries, but realised that was not enough to ensure greater empowerment for the Lusitania Fishermen.

LET then bought 80% of a BBBee company called the Well-Grown Fishing Company.

This new venture immediately accepted its social obligations and became involved in the sponsor of a sport event titled “Tribute 2 Tata” in honour of Nelson Mandela.

It takes place annually around July 18, on Madiba’s birthday.

In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela states that before he took up the fight against Apartheid in his youth, he

practised boxing, because “In the ring, rank, age, colour, and wealth are irrelevant.”

LET transformed its trustee compliment by replacing the White trustee with Patrick Mngxunyeni and Thelma April.

All these efforts towards Black empowerment then came to a head for the LET trustees who then made it possible for BSH to submit its own FRAP application.

The possibility of acquiring WCRL fishing rights is exciting to the fishermen as they will secure jobs by being able to catch the “quota” and then further benefits from their labour when they show profits in their business.

SALT’s excellence and achievements T

he Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) welcomes the 2016 Science Diplomacy Award given by the Department of Science and Technology as a result of the telescope consistently contributing to globally significant discoveries in astronomy. Science diplomacy is the use of scientific collaborations among nations to address common problems and build constructive international partnerships. The Science Diplomacy Awards recognise excellence and achievements in international scientific cooperation.

“This award recognises the scientific success of SALT, which is obtaining high-quality observations of the cosmos every night and distributing this information to part-

ners around the world, expanding our understanding of the universe in which we live. This success is due to the ingenuity and dedication of a world-class team of South African and international scientists, engineers, and technicians who designed, built, and operate SALT. The telescope inspires a generation of young South Africans to dare to dream big, and to have the confidence and skill to bring those dreams into reality”, says Professor Ted Williams, the director of the South African Astronomical Observatory.

The Southern African Large Telescope has recently celebrated 11 years since its construction and inauguration in 2005.

SALT is a 10 metre class telescope located

in Sutherland in the Northern Cape. It has been in full science operations for 5 years, with its consortium of partners from South Africa, Poland, the United States, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and India who have made the building and operation of the telescope possible.

There are more than 150 international peerreviewed scientific papers published thus far based on SALT data. Recent contributions of SALT to science include the discovery of the brightest supernova ever found and the unveiling of a massive supercluster of galaxies.

The trend of SALT’s science output parallels that of other large international telescopes.

However comparing operation costs, SALT produces science more cost-effectively than

any other 10 metre class telescope. Numerous students are getting trained locally and internationally.

Since the building of SALT, the South African Astronomical Observatory has been actively involved in astronomy outreach by sharing scientific discoveries with the communities across South Africa with particular focus in Sutherland and Cape Town which is where our operations are located.

As such, both locations have a thriving community engagement programme involving schools, teachers and society. Additionally, many visitors to Sutherland get an opportunity to see the telescope during the day.

Mr. Sivuyile Manxoyi, who is the head of SALT Collateral Benefits Programme says, “The building of SALT has not only contributed to science research advancement, but to socio-economic development in Sutherland and nearby towns through tourism.

The other major benefit is education and outreach in science, which we continue to implement nationally. SALT continues to serve as an inspiration and to instill confidence that our country and its people have the potential to excel in science and technology.”

he City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate hosted the second annual Neighbourhood Watch Awards ceremony on Saturday The awards ceremony, a joint initiative between the city and the community policing sector, recognised the tireless efforts of civilians helping to build safer communities.

The Neighbourhood Watch Awards is an opportunity to recognise the tireless work being done by dedicated volunteers and active neighbourhood watch groups in the fight against increasing crime levels in their respective communities.

The city’s Mayoral Committee

Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith said: ‘This is such an opportunity to celebrate, but also highlight the important work that civil society is doing to help build a safer Cape Town.

Community policing fulfils a role that law enforcement agencies can’t because it means an ear to the ground, an intimate understanding of how the neighbourhood works and where the areas are that need attention.

More importantly, policing is everyone’s business because we simply do not have enough law enforcement officers to saturate each and every community. It’s been proven that suburbs with effective community policing structures are

safer and I call on more residents to become involved in some way, shape or form,’.

Khayelitsha’s Brenda Mamputa won The Safe City Award.

She is from the Khayelitsha community care group and is the first black female cricket umpire in the country. She also runs a soup kitchen for 500 beneficiaries in her neighbourhood.

There’s a new voice in the Mzansi music scene, and is sure to set the deck-tables ablaze.

Thembisa Mamputa’s is that new voice on the block.

Born and raised in Khayelitsha, but now based in Jo’burg, it would seem that music runs deep in her genes since her mother is the granddaughter of legendary Xhosa crooner Stompie Mavi.

It is also not surprising when one considers that her parents, Mzimkhulu and Mhumhu, play musical instruments, and the her grandmother, Ruth Kenke missed out on a role in the legendary King Kong musical because her parents refused to allow her, citing her young age.

“Growing up, I would listen to his songs

and mimic him,” She enthused.

Her singing career started at the Gardens Commercial High School, from whence she proceeded to polish her skill at the famed Simon Estes Music School.

“This provided me with a platform to launch my music career. Also the school promoted me by engaging me in all their functions,” she said.

Thembisa,28, was spotted at one of these gigs which catapulted her to being invited to private functions.

In 2008 she received her break when was invited to perform in parliament during a visit by the DRC Congo president Joseph Kabila, belting hits by Miriam Makeba and Brenda Fassie.

Since then, she has pushed herself into the

comfortable terrain of composing original songs.

Her latest album Ibali includes her debut single “Emalawini” which was hailed as something of a gem when it hit the airwaves.

Ibali weaves seductive playfulness from Thembisa’s bubbly and boisterous character with raspy contemplative tones and maturity that manifests in her music.

Mkhulu Nsingiza her manager, said Thembisa is ready to take her place amongst the wall of talented musicians.

Rapper Rattex is back in the mix MANDLA MAHASHE

Kasi rap King Rattex is back with new mixtape.

fter a four year hiatus from releasing music, one of Cape Town’s most recognisable rap artists, Rattex, is back with a new mixtape.

Two weeks ago, Thabo Thetwa, aka Rattex, released a song called “I Had To”, which is his first project since 2012.

Rattex, from Makhaya in Khayelitsha, said he took a long break following a fallout with his record label Pioneer Unit.

He said that even though he could not divulge much information about the fallout it affected him terribly.

“I lost interest in everything...I just coiled into my own shell. I stopped making music and stopped performing. It was a dark time

in my life as many people did not understand what was happening”, he said.

He said that throughout this time it was his friends, family and fans that kept him alive.

“I had told myself that I was done(with music) but they kept on telling me how much they enjoyed the music and that I needed to come back. A close friend , Thera Ginini, encouraged me to work with him in his event organising businesses in 2014,” he explained.

“This was the turning point. I began to get into the swing of things by performing at events until late last year, when I began to stage my own shows.

“I went to the studio and started making music and I got my groove back and we de-

cided that I should release a mixtape instead of a full album.

I am happy to have released this project and happy that the people have finally received what they have been calling for,” he explained.

The EP has five tracks with the song called I Had To as the leading track. Rattex said that even though he had tried to infuse new sounds to his music, he still remains the artist that his fans fell in love with.

“I still talk about the same issues as before; township life as well as street music.

The tracks feature Timo Abdul and Sinelizwi and are produced by Last and Don Teddy as well,” he said.

The mixtape is available from Thethwa and Ginini for R50.

Queen of ‘Litsha has what it takes MANDLA MAHASHE

L

ona Gweva is the reigning queen of the Khayelitsha catwalk after being crowned Miss Khayelitsha 2016 on Sunday.

For her it was a road full of stereotypes, and challenges notwithstanding, her assessions that beauty went skin deep came to be proved true.

Gweva’s road to beauty fame started earlier this year even as she was told her skin was too dark to crack it.

The 22-year-old then entered the Miss Cape Town pageant, and as fate would have it, walked away with the public choice award, after scoring the most votes through an SMS competition.

On Sunday she beat 10 other contestants to become the queen of Khayelitsha at the pageant; she said this was her proudest moment.

“As confident as I was, I couldn’t believe it when they called my name; the moment felt surreal. I still can’t believe that I actually did it,” said Gweva.

In an interview with City Vision in April, she noted that the notion that dark skinned people were less beautiful was an outdated stereotype.

She has since entered eight other beauty competitions, and when she didn’t come close to being on the top three, she was starting to give in.

“I had told myself that this was the last pageant I was entering and I would focus on my own modelling school. I started that school to teach young people that they are beautiful in all shapes, shades and sizes,” she said.

As Miss Khayelitsha, she walks away with a cash prize, gift bags as well as the use of a car for a month.

He duties will include community work, something that was already in her heart as she is quite a philanthropist.

Event organiser Brenda Mamputa said that they wanted people who were beautiful and confident.

“The winners showed great confidence, great posture and great personality. We are very pleased with the winners of the day,” she said.

Mamputha said that the event was successful and had grown in the six years she has been running it. She said it was made possible by local sponsors.

Hlangana is all the dedication In order to make a difference and change lives, the country’s largest brewer said it is constantly looking for mentors in its campaign called #BeTheMentor.

The campaign, which aims to curb underage drinking, asks young adults to be mentors as the youth can more easily identify with them.

Mentors are ordinary people who have chosen to share their life lessons with someone who could do with a little help.

Fezile Hlangana from Cape Town is one of the new mentors. He is passionate about youth development. In a nutshell, he is a determined, disciplined, dedicated and driven person.

He has dared to tread the road less travelled and is not afraid to take calculated risks. He makes most of opportunities that come his way and brave enough to carve new growth platforms.

Hlangana is a media and soccer professional and believes in lifelong learning and the power of education.

He is currently studying towards a master’s degree in Strategic Communication..

Coding is the buzz for whizkids C

ollaboration is the buzz word of the future and a recent partnership ensured that nearly 500 Cape Town learners got to write their first lines of computer code.

These learners had the opportunity to take their first steps in becoming digital creators and not just digital users.

The skill set required by our youth in the future is changing rapidly.

One of these ‘new’ skills is coding or programming computers to perform certain actions.

Empowering Africa’s youth with this skill is the motivation of Africa Code Week.

Coding is sometimes seen as ‘difficult’ and possibly only meant for the ‘brainy and privileged few’ or even ‘just for boys’.

Not so, Africa Code Week, for which the Cape Town Science Centre serves as the Global Coordinator, aims to dispel these myths and is intent on introducing as many young people as possible to at least write their first lines of code during this annual initiative.

Chevron, for the past two years has invested significantly in empowering 20 schools in STEM in the North Education District of Cape Town.

Combining the Chevron’s Schools Programme and SAP’s Africa Code Week with a big push from the Cape Town Science Centre, has made this ‘coding collaboration’ possible.

The coding workshops use Scratch, a popular free programming language used worldwide and developed specifically to simplify the face of coding for young people.

One of the schools that participated in this collaboration was Bloubergrant High

School, where 14-year old Esihle Yokwana, started her high school this year.

She says “Scratch has helped me to realise my capabilities, to tell my stories and be a part of the digital world.

My confidence has grown so much that I often host my friends for scratch sessions at my home and we have so much fun creating and experimenting with Scratch.”

In some of these collaboration schools like Silverleaf, most of the learners who participated in the workshop sessions had never been exposed to a computer before.

Okuhle Owethu Mtya, one of the Africa Code Week local trainers said: “I had the privilege of teaching these kids, not only on how to use a computer, but also to code using Scratch.

It is humbling for me to expose less privileged children like myself to a digital literacy I know will empower them and open their minds to aspire to achieve more than they have ever dreamed of.”

“To keep kids keen and engaged around the subjects of science and technology, you need to widen their horizons by exposing them to as many exciting and relevant opportunities as possible.

Through our Chevron Schools Programme, which target learners in the area surrounding our refinery, we are achieving this.

By collaborating with the Science Centre and their like-minded donors, we can offer them just that many more opportunities” says Jill Koopman, Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager, Chevron South Africa.

The Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) started their journey sixteen years ago in Canal Walk and now in the suburb of Observatory.

The CTSC is proud to work with both Chevron and SAP who have made this collaboration possible.

Giant retailer heaves in to ease the plight of the destitute kids The Shoprite Group is hosting over 60 Christmas parties at children’s homes, old age homes and care facilities around the country this December, bringing some much needed festive cheer to the lives of around 12,000 people.

Mickey Winifred Linda is the incredibly inspiring woman behind the Yiza Ekhaya Soup Kitchen, a community-based project in Khayelitsha.

The project also encompasses a crèche, food garden and sewing project.

The project feeds around 250 children as well as elderly people whose dependence on medication makes it necessary for them to eat regularly. Known in the community as “Nompilo”, which is loosely translated as “Care Giver”, Mickey is working not only to address the immediate needs around her, but to also put in place more sustainable so-

lutions to address the food security challenges faced by the community.

When the Shoprite Group heard about the project, it immediately sprang into action, donating food buckets, kitchen equipment and chairs to assist the many elderly people being supported by the Soup Kitchen.

The Group has extended its support of Yiza Ekhaya during the course of 2016, working with other local partners to bolster the Soup Kitchen’s existing food garden as well as helping to set up ten additional home food gardens for the project volunteers.

Part of the produce grown at each of these gardens is used to supplement the existing feeding scheme at Yiza Ekhaya. The Shoprite Group believes the development and support of women serves as a significant contribution to stable economies and effective community development.
