I

n a bid to curb shack fires and introduce alternative low cost cooking appliances, a new age mbawula has been introduced in Khayelitsha.

Last Thursday the Tshisa Mbawula initiative was launched amid much fun-fare and anticipated relief for the locals of TR Section.

This mbawula stove boasts benefits such as non spillage of coals or wood when it falls to the side, thus preventing fire spreading into the household. It only needs a few brisket coals which have been specially manufactured to be biodegradable and can be used as fertilizer after its use in the fire.

Its manufactures claim that it does not release any toxic fumes and is more cost effective.

The event took place at the Blue Hall in Site C where the coal brazier was introduced for the first time to the public.

This initiative was brought about by Mbele Social Concepts, which is a local company that provides Information Technology education and training to less advantaged communities.

According to the company founder Sibongile Mbele, the idea was born after he noticed a need for the use of alternative resources.

“There are many shack fires in our townships and what better way to fight that than to introduce a a cooking instrument that not only is safe to use but is also cheaper to run.

The mbawula stove runs on coal which is cheaper than electricity and is safer because if the stove falls over it won’t start a fire,” said Mbele.

He said that the mbawula stove was even better because it was cheaper, costing around R600 for the package, which briquettes and tongs.

After conceiving this idea, Mbele said he knocked on the doors of different companies to fund the initiative and that has resulted in the donation of 10 stoves by an IT Company, CondorGreen Infotech to the residents of Site C. Let the door open: the magic door.

What door do you want to open in your life? Is there a door you are gunning for? That’s like a goal, isn’t it? I guess it is. But we don’t look at it that way. But it is.

What’s behind the door? It is all what you want to do. You know it is not about want only. I want this. I want that. It is your occupation – doing want you love. Working your dream. And living it.

Better to live your dream than getting all you want and do nothing.

Some people want. They don’t want to do. I want to do. When you do; you live. You are alive. You are part of life. You enjoy what you do. As Confucius says, “ If you choose a job that you enjoy, then you will never work a day in your life.” That’s the door I am talking about. I am talking about a door that will give you a kick of life. I mean; we’ve got to want that, don’t we? We can’t be pessimistic. We can’t go on saying life is tough. It is not good. Let’s be reckless while we can. Let’s drink and be merry.

Winners don’t do that. They don’t go about degrading themselves in public.

You don’t see them drunk in the streets, just because they want to be happy. If losers can’t get what they want, they will create it.

And they will create it bad. They will become reckless. No, winners don’t do that. They find the door. To find the door; you’ve got to prepare.

ing. You’ve got to go to school, and do well there. Recently there was a survey. It was about school children. It asked why were kids leaving school.

The answer was that they were not getting what they want there.

In other words, schools were not preparing them for the door. What a shame! Schools were not giving them keys to life. If I were a teacher I would be ashamed of myself. What are we there for, then?

But you can also self-prepare yourself. This is even more important than school. For after school you are on your own. And what are you doing to guide yourself? There are temptations to forget about your career.

There are temptations to tell yourself you are done. You do not need to take it further and improve yourself. Time to relax and enjoy life. Is that the door for you? Have you reached your pinnacle in life? Mandela said after reaching a summit there is another. I don’t buy the yearn that says, “I want to retire young.” That’s some ego without substance. Life is a journey to a door. And after that door there is another door. Stay positive.

indiwe Magona, one of South Africa’s most prolific writers, will once again launch her new novel: Chasing the Tails of My Father’s Cattle on Sunday 13 December at Guga S’thebe in Langa from 3pm.

In October, the novel was successfully launched in Johannesburg and at the Book Lounge in Cape Town. Now a local launch is more than fitting to encourage reading in every household.

Copies of the novel will be on sale and Sindiwe Magona will be in attendance and will sign copies of the book.

This new novel is published by Seriti sa Sechaba Publishers NPC, a non -profit publisher whose aim is to focus on publishing fiction and non-fiction by known and first time Black writers.

Chasing the Tails of My Father’s Cattles is the story of Shumikazi, the only surviving child of Jojo and Miseka. She grows up in a small village in a remote Eastern Cape village during the days of White rule, leading, from the outside, an apparently unremarkable life. Yet Shumi is marked for extraordinary things from the moment of her birth.

Wry, tragic, funny, scathing, with a Greek chorus of villagers’ voices, this rich new novel from one of South Africa’s most beloved storytellers underscores the dignity of those often rendered invisible – poor, rural women, their families and communities.

These marginal characters crackle with life and verve as they step into the centre of the national narrative in Magona’s skilled hands. A powerful meditation on the vulnerability of rural women, it is also a series of overlapping love stories – above all, the love a father has for his daughter.

Sindiwe Magona was born in the former Transkei. Because of circumstances at home, she had to leave school early and seek work as a domestic worker. But because of her resolve to live a meaningful life, Magona finished her high school education through correspondence. She later completed a BA through the University of South Africa and went on to graduate with a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in New York.

She has worked for the United Nations for 22 years in New York before retiring to her native South Africa. Magona is a poet, biographer, novelist and writer of children’s books. She has received numerous awards, including the Order of Ikhamanga in 2011.

Madala chef out to cook up a storm

A

Khayelitsha chef’s determination to bring fine cuisine to his neighbourhood has left locals asking for seconds.

Kenneth Lekgale, owner of Kenny’s Kitchen and Grill, began his business serving customers at a mobile stand but the demand forced him to set up a permanent structure at his home.

He serves gourmet burgers, steaks, chicken and salads to around 40 people a day and is becoming a firm favourite among dinners.

He started in 2014 but his home in Mpetsheni Crescent , Ilitha Park welcomes around 40 hungry stomachs a day.

“My realisation came after close to 30 years working as a cook and chef for various establishments, the last of which was a restaurant in Gordon’s Bay. He says after quitting this job, he started selling burgers and chicken meals to the community from a mobile van.

During the interviews customers walk in and greet: “Hey Madala”. The customers appear to be very fond of the ‘madala’ whose grey beard is outshone by his warm smile as he greets every walk-in.

“It wasn’t easy as I made only 56

rand a day for the first few days but the business started growing. A couple of months later I just couldn’t keep up with the demand in that small stand so I decided to set up shop at my house,” he said.

He told City Vision that delicious food, clean environment and affordable prices are what gives his business the edge.

“When people come to have a meal here they can believe that such great food and presentation can be made available in the townships.

My customers call in and we tell them to come after 20 minutes and they come fetch their food. Every meal is made fresh and we don’t sell leftover food as a result the customers can tell that this is great food.

The irony of it all is that in the affluent places it is the people from the townships that are train and prepare these meals.

There is no reason why we can’t bring that expertise home and provide excellent services for people and also save them petrol because they won’t have to drive far,” he chuckled.

He is hoping to train youngsters and expand his facility and service the local workforce with lunch meals.

Gas couple’s dreams come true

S

ithembile and Mavis Nongogo have always dreamed of one day running their own business.

And this dream has come true for them, after their wishes were granted when the City of Cape Town’s launched a project for an enabling environment to drive economic opportunities and job creation in this region.

The Khayelitsha now run their own gas retail business thanks to this project.

The couple had approached the City of Cape Town for assistance in 2014 when they required land on which to operate a gas retail business in Khayelitsha.

In line with the City’s commitment to leveraging its assets to drive economic growth and sustainable development, the City made a portion of vacant municipal land of 1 000 m² in size available to them for their busi-

ness.

After following the necessary competitive and legislative process, a 10-year lease agreement was entered into with the City’s Property Management Department.

Having access to the land has enabled the couple to build a formal structure on the premises, which is situated on the corner of Phakamani and Spine Roads.

The city’s acting executive mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, on Saturday officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony during the opening of the business’s new premises.

‘The City commends this couple for taking the initiative to approach us for help in finding an appropriate property for their business.

‘We are constantly trying to enable economic growth through the release of properties or portions of vacant properties that are

not required for municipal service delivery.

Sadly, however, there are few success stories and often the beneficiaries are not able to grab the potential economic opportunities.

‘This is why we are delighted with the progress that has been made in this case.

The entrepreneurial spirit is of vital importance in the South African economy and gov-

ernments must assist to create an enabling environment to boost entrepreneurship and self-employment,” said Alderman Neilson.

Mavis said she was thrilled to have the new premises.

“In 2013 we had a terrible fire accident in our old premises and it cost us dearly and with the new shop I can sleep in peace because everything is in order,” she said.

If they don’t have the telephone

number, healthcare workers should provide it to them. ART are readily available everywhere. If patients have problems and run out of ARVs when away, they should not be afraid to go to their nearest clinic and ask for ARV treatment. All they need to do is take their green card, empty pill containers, patient folder number and the number of the Western Cape clinic they are attending with them. If patients don’t know where their nearest ART clinic is to their destination, healthcare workers can look it up for them using the HIV911 directories.

Alternatively, all patients travelling to far places can dial *120*448# when they are at home and they will receive details of the nearest ARV clinic.

At least 75% of South Africans who were asked for a bribe ended up paying one, according to a survey conducted by the Ethics Institute of SA (EthicsSA).

uick thinking by detectives hindered what could have been an easy catch for thieves on Friday in Harare.

Two men went to Harare police reporting that a Hyundai truck with a trailer loaded with home appliances was robbed from them.

said the two claimed that an unknown vehicle collided with the truck and forced them to stop.

“When they confronted the driver of the other car, the driver allegedly pointed them with a firearm. The two complainants said they fled the scene on foot abandoning the truck,” she said.

A carjacking case was opened and the case was transferred to Macassar police for further investigation.

Preliminary investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the carjacking never occurred and the two men lied under oath The investigation led police to addresses in Paarl and Milnerton where the stolen property was recovered and six suspects aged between 26 and 35 year old were arrested.

The total value of recovered home appliances is estimated at R200 000.

The suspects facing counts of perjury, defeating the end of justice. Station Comman Lt Colonel Richard Koopman commended the members for the outstanding investigation that led to the arrests.

Backyarders take matters to city A bout 300 Mfuleni backyarders marched yesterday to the office of the Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, to hand over a memorandum about housing in the area.

Madikizela accepted the memorandum and acknowledged the backyarders’ concerns.

A backyarder is someone who lives in a wendy house or shack in someone else’s property.

The protesters assembled on the Grand Parade in town. From there they marched along Darling Street and Adderley street to the provincial legislature in Wale Street.

Before handing over the memorandum, Bulelani Bota, secretary of the Mfuleni Backyarders Association, addressed the marchers. “We are not here to fight the Provincial Minister of Human Settlements but to request that he should take centre stage in resolving the Mfuleni backyarders’ plight,” he said.

Memorandum In the memorandum the backyarders demanded that the list of housing beneficiaries which they had drawn up should be accepted. They expressed complaints about the local councillor, Themba Honono, who they said wanted his housing list with a different set of beneficiaries to be used.

The protesters asked for Benedicta Van Minnen, Mayco Member for Human Settlements, and a representative of the provincial Human Settlements department to be part of further meetings on housing in the area.

Bota expressed concern about school-age children living in backyards for whom study was difficult.

He also asked for an independent housing project manager to be appointed.

Thembani Thaka, chair of the Mfuleni Development Forum, asked the provincial minister to “attend to the matter urgently and exercise your authority” to resolve corrupt activities.

years, said people voted for councillors to serve the interests of the people but some chose to be corrupt.

“We are prepared to fight till we root out corruption in our ward,” she said.

However Councillor Honono denied the basis of the complaints against him. He told GroundUp that the housing beneficiary list is dealt with by the City. He says he has nothing to do with the list.

People urged to use condoms Although a new HIV preventative drug has been approved by the Medicines Control Council (MCC), South Africans have been urged to continue using condoms when having sex.

The new drug, named Truvada, was developed by pharmaceutical company Aspen in 2013, but took two years to be approved by the MCC, News24 reported.

The company claims the drug has a 100% success rate.

Spokesperson for the health department, Joe Maila, stressed that condoms are still important.

Maila said the pill would help in the fight against HIV/Aids, but it shouldn’t replace the use of condoms.

Detractors have raised concerns that the drug will promote unsafe sex and promiscuity.

Dr Eric Goemaere from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) recently spoke to News24 about the progress South Africa has made when it comes to eradicating HIV. “I’m not sure that condom use is going to increase in the future,” said Goemaere, who explained that in absence of a vaccine, the best preventative measure that can be taken is treatment.

Many patients feel ashamed when they’re diagnosed, a stigma that still continues into 2016.

Dr Sindisiwe van Zyl told City Vision that the humiliation HIV positive patients experience can be deadly because it keeps them from seeking medical assistance.

“Although the virus is no longer a death sentence, some would rather get sick than access treatment,” she said.

ncouraged by words she heard from a former Miss South Africa Vathiswa Senti, a woman from Khayelitsha has decided to start her own beauty pageant business. Senti,27, modelled and received support from her family, friends and teachers when she was still in high school in 2005.

“I had a lot of passion and read many modelling magazines. Basetsana Khumalo shared important tips in some stories.

“I remember the one where she said women can make it in the world of business.

“That inspired me,” Senti said.

She was crowned Miss Khayelitsha in 2007

and then decided to share her experiences with girls who wished to become models.

“Earlier this year I registered Litcha Modelling Academy and brought Ayabulela Njovane and Phatiswa Lekganyane on board as business partners,” she told City Vision.

“At the academy we are passionate about community development and building young people’s character and leadership skills. This will also help them to get jobs,” said Vathiswa.

Senti said it would be in young girl’s best interests to grab at any opportunity for success presented by women like her. Khayelitsha is vast and has great potential and prospects for fulfilling one’s dreams.

Vote Zikhona to bring title here MBONGISENI MASEKO Zikhona Makeleni is set to turn heads when she debuts in the finals of the Miss Heritage South Africa International, next week.

Makeleni,22, and the only representative from the province, will be competing with 13 other contestants from across the country in Johannesburg next Saturday.

Makeleni, from delft , is a second year Civil Engineering student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Her career in the catwalk industry started last year when she entered the Miss CPUT beauty pageant, which, she says, turned out to be a learning curve for her.

She then entered the Harare Miss Heritage in Khayelitsha, where she was crowned the first Princess.

She said it was her late aunt, Zanele Makeleni-who passed away in Januarywho encouraged her to consider a career in modelling.

“My late aunt saw the potential in me and encouraged me to take part in stage modelling. I heeded the call and I am now gaining experience by the day. I enjoy it.

It is not about the beauty, but confidence and intelligence. Those who want to consider a career in modelling must focus on what they want and love it,” Makeleni said.

She also joined casting agency for television adverts, in 2012.

Miss Heritage South Africa is a pageant that celebrates and showcases our unique, diverse cultures and heritage as a rainbow nation.

She had to write a motivational essay to qualify for the finals of the competition.

Catch Katlego live in action LOUISA STEYL

G

ugulethu born thespian Katlego Moncho is currently making her acting debut in David Kramer’s newest musical Orpheus in Africa.

The trained dancer plays a Xhosa maiden, a maid and tap dancer in the production that tells the story of Orpheus McAdoo and the Virginia Jubilee Singers who toured Queen Victoria’s colonies in the last decade of the 19th Century, along with the evolution of Black American music. The group was made up of first generation freed slaves, many of whom graduated from America’s Hampton University. They experiences considerable success when they visited South Africa.

Katlego got involved with the production after a friend told her about the auditions.

“To my surprise I received a call while on my way home saying I was in.”

She says she’s grateful for the opportunity to work with “such beautiful souls”, to learn from them and to see how their collective creativity has brought Orpheus’ story to life.

The souls she’s referring to include Aubrey Poo (Muvhango, Scandal, The Wild, Rent, Dreamgirls) and Lynelle

Katlego also says that working with theatre legend David Kramer is a pleasure. “Just observing the man is a privilege.”

When she isn’t on stage, Katlego also works with the New World Foundation a community development and training organisations. While she hopes to appear in a few more musicals after this one, she also plans to go back to teaching hip-hop and pantsula dance lesson to her “kids” at the New world Foundation in Muizenberg.

Theatre fans can catch Katlego in action at the Fugard Theatre in Orpheus in Africa until 9 January 2016.

ellenic’s recent good form has enabled Neven Payne and his troops to leapfrog several rivals to share the top spot with Glendene United in the Safa Western Cape Regional ABC Motsepe League.

The affectionately nicknamed “Greek Gods” set the cat among the pigeons when they recorded a 3-0 victory against newcomers Atlantic Nacional at the UCT astraturf field over the weekend.

Hellenic also secured a well-deserved point from their mid-week away clash against Steenberg United, playing to a goalless draw at the Philippi stadium.

The four points from two matches has propelled Hellenic to 21 points from 10 outings, which mirrors that of Glendene United.

United did not find the going easy in their home game and drew 2-2 with Ajax Cape Town, while Steenberg United dropped more valuable points when they played to a 2-2 draw with the Central Karoo outfit Barcelona.

The Steenberg side is placed third on the standings with 20 pints from nine matches while Ikapa Sporting, who edged out Ramblers FC 1-0, occupy fourth place with 19 points from nine matches.
