Innovations like these could d soon be part of our daily lives folllowing a partnership between the e South African Spaza Shops Co-op perative (Sassco) and the Barn in n Khayelitsha.

The Barn is a business incubatorr whose main objectives are the de evelopment of enterprises in the arrea and their integration into the e digital sphere.

Sassco is comprised of more than n 300 spaza shop owners from Khaye elitsha and are looking to expanding g into various other neighbourrhoods.

According to Sassco chairman n, Bongani Vakele, the partnership p with the Barn has been in the e works since the beginning of the e year.

“As part of this agreement, ourr members will be trained in busiiness management and operationss, to be able to run their businessess professionally.

This relationship, we hope, willl help in providing solutions forr some of the problems faced by y small business owners,”said Vake ele.

He added that Sassco was formed d to create opportunities for sustain nable economic development in Khayelitsha and other areas through the formation of strategic partnerships.

“Since the Barn is also about the economic and social development in the area, it was agreed that it would be mutually beneficial if the two parties teamed to work on various projects,”he said.

Vakele said that they had just fewer than 400 members but the number was ever increasing.

He noted that informal businesses had a huge buying power and that they should used this to benefit their businesses.

Fees movement was a jolt of lightning to us I am sure we all witnessed the events of the past week or so: #fees must fall.

Some of us of the older generation had mixed feelings. We did not know what to make of this. We did not know whether to be pro or be against it.

As the events unfolded we saw violence flare up although some kids were against it. They pleaded with their colleagues, “No violence! No violence!” Did they listen? I don’t think so.

They pelted the police with stones, burnt some mobile toilets and set up roadblocks. They knew what they were there for. They were there to fight.

Such is the nature of the revolution.

And you that were watching I wonder what you made of this. So many people have asked me to comment. I wish they did not because I am apolitical. I’m not good at politics. I’m too naïve.

Politics do not want a naïve person.

A naïve person thinks everyone is good. But not everyone is good. There are some in sheepskins. Beneath they are wolves. They will do anything to advance their interests.

We have seen that - great revolutionaries who call themselves comrades but live in the lap of capitalist luxury.

They drive expensive cars.

Live in suburbs. Their kids go to expensive schools.

They are different from you and me.

Look at Jonathan Moyo, the Minister of Higher Education in Zimbabwe. His daughter (may her soul RIP) was studying at UCT. Couldn’t she study in Zim? I bet she could not.

Because universities in Zim are not good enough for Moyo. And his daughter could not study there. Let’s call a spade a spade. And let’s be angry if we can. Maybe this fees must fall movement will usher in new openness.

We will talk about the things we have been afraid to talk about. But some guys are unhappy with this glasnost. They want to suppress it.

Why I don’t know. It baffles me.

Maybe they know why.

These kids could usher in something new. We should not spoil it. And we should not allow spoilers to spoil it. It is something that has taken the country by storm. You can’t ignore it.

Even if you want to, you can’t.

People will ask you, “What is your opinion of it?” You may pretend to be taken aback. You may pretend you have no opinion. There are people like that.

They hide behind a bottle. But they should be drawn out. You can pretend to be not there, while you are there.

Sober up! And have an opinion. This country counts on you. And our children need you. Stay positive.

Fees: Government must lead SIHLE ZIDE The current wave of strike which is going on around country’s tertiary institutions is of paramount importance in a democratic society, but also it has negative effects because the time lost by learners will never be recovered.

However, the government, universities and students must find a common point of interest to settle amicably.

The important point to consider in any society is that there it consists of different, mainly the haves and the have-nots, like evolusionist historian Charles Darwin categorized them.

Rich students and poor students want different things.

Rich students usually want the best education and services from institutions and they are more than ready to pay any amount for

the services, because they have the money, while poor students struggle every day and they just want to survive through tertiary years and finish so that they can turn the fortunes of their families around.

Therefore, fee increases of 10% is not in the interest of disadvantaged students since education is their only hope to overcome a life of crime, poverty and tribulation.

The strike has met with divided opinion from the poor and the rich.

The rich students are complaining that the protesters are wasting time by protesting, while the poor students feel deeply that they are fighting for a just cause.

However, the government must be a referee between institutions and the students.

It must help the institutions maintain reasonable fees which disadvantaged students can afford without compromising the quality of education.

Goniwe old boy returns to give A

mid the national education crisis at institutions of higher learning, a former learner at Matthews Goniwe High School has returned to his old school with an open wallet and heart.

Yengwayo Wilberforce Kutta, who is now the chairperson of a panel of assessors at the Department of Transport , executive chairperson of Zibonele Development Trust and deputy president of International Body of Community Radio Broadcasters, said he was touched by the plight of children from poor homes.

Kutta was president of the Student Representative Council at the school, at a time when it was still known as Malizo High in 1987.

“Out of conscience, I decided to go back for a different cause, that of providing assistance to the disadvantaged learners,” he told City Vision .

For the time being, Kutta has committed himself to taking full responsibility for six learners in the next academic year.

He has promised to buy school uniforms, provide pocket money and play a mentoring role to the learners untll they complete of Grade 12.

He said during his presidency of the SRC, he fought for the name to be changed to Matthew Goniwe, a struggle hero from Cradock, who was one of four to be assassinated by the Apartheid regime.

Having succeeded those intense battles, the constituency of students gained confidence in his leadership and elected him as the provincial secretary of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS). Subse-

quent to his graduation from student activism, he was absorbed by various youth formations such as the South African Youth Congress.

Whilst he led youth structures, elders in the African National Congress identified him as a potential leader, and started to entrust him with more responsibilities, even in civil society structures, hence he was elected as the secretary of Khayelitsha Development Forum.

Kutta is very passionate about education; he holds master’s degree in Public Administration and he is still determined to pursue his studies. He is known by his peers as a soft-hearted person who cannot stand to see a suffering child, especially on issues pertaining to education.

Through this initiative, he is calling upon his peers, business leaders, community leaders, the religious fraternity, the government and society in general to join hands towards the betterment of the education system and true democratic society.

Even though he left the high school 25 years ago, he still subscribes to COSAS’ old slogan “each one teach one”.

“Imfundo lilifa lanaphakade masixhaseni isizwe sethu”, Kutta will formally introduce his project at the school on October 29 at 10h00.

Mzuvukile Ngumbe, deputy principal, said they were excited by Kutta’s gesture and urged others to follow suit.

“This is very inspiring and we hope that more people will follow in his steps. In our schools, we see a lot of poverty and need. We thank him for doing so,” he said.

Uniform manufacturer donates

I

t was a memorable moment when poor learners received a donation of school uniform on Tuesday.

About 20 Lwandle learners were the beneficiaries of the benevolence of Forever Young, a school and sportswear manufacture, which is based in Mitchells Plain.

The company, which has been making school uniforms since 1970, was approached by the school to donate to the needy learners who did not have a school uniform.

Nine of the learners are orphans from Fikelela Children’s Home.

Stanley Maqhubela, the school principal, said the uniform will make a great change in the lives of the learners.

“I am very happy and I appreciate what Forever Young did for the school. The donation will go a long way towards helping the learners.

They will never feel different to other learners again,” Maqhubela said.

Johan Swartz, the owner of Forever Young, said it was a touching moment for

him after he was approached to make the donation which made him not to hesitate to act on the request.

“I always go to different areas to make a donation and it makes me feel very happy to see how those contributions change the lives of children.

The school uniform brings unity to learners. They feel happy when they look like other children,” Swartz said.

Nomazizi Phakade, 70, the grandmother of Iviwe Stemela, 7, who also benefited from the school uniform, said the donation was a relief to her.

“I am very happy, because she does not have a school uniform. I raise her alone.

I do not know her mother’s whereabouts

and her father is in prison. This will really help me, because I cannot afford to buy her the school uniform. She also has a problem with overweight and I struggle to get sizes that fit her,” Phakade said.

Mncedisi Ziqubu, chairperson for School Governing Body (SGB), also applauded the donors.

“For me personally, this is a very good thing to have happened to children. Children always feel very happy to get something new. I am very happy and excited. The school management went an extra mile to ask for the donation. Now the learners will be identifiable when they walk on the street that they are coming from the school,” Ziqubu said.

Food for pets The SAPS Academy Bishop Lavis is inviting all interested animal farmers to collect wastage food for their animals.

Bishop Lavis Academy secretary Glenda Nel said they have about 25Kg vegetables peels and left over food on a weekly basis.

She said according to Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 the “left overs” can cause a health risk at the mess environment seeing that is standing outside.

“We are now extending an invitation interested animal farmers in the nearby areas who are willing to collect the wastage food on the daily basis on an agreed fee,” she said.

Reds march to mashonisa office OWN CORRESPONDENT

he South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Cape Metro launched the 2015/2016 Red October Campaign with a march against loans allegedly offered to social grant beneficiaries in Khayelitsha, on Saturday.

This year, the Red October campaign is focusing on transformation of the financial sector to serve the people, including the transformation of the South African media.

The district marched to the office of Net1 Financial service, a company that issues loans to the social grants beneficiaries.

However, upon arrival at the offices of the so-called loans shark, officials refused to speak to the marchers. The marchers said they had also invited officials from the National Credit Regulator. The SACP is planning to open a case against Net1.

All our efforts at arresting these developments have so far been frustrated.

In times like this, the matured have generally been invaluable in helping to navigate the challenges facing the organization.

Therefore, it is painful that WDF is deeply involved in divisions.

In the heat of such conflicts, rationality and sober political reflection often go out of the window.

The dominant cabal would say things which in normal circumstances would be completely foreign to our KDF culture.

Name calling, labeling, rumour-mongering and character assassination become the order of the day.

This is in itself a potential prelude to the unthinkable- physical conflict between the stakeholders and leaders of the Khayelitsha Development Forum.

Unfortunately, instead of calming the situation down, and assisting the WDF and stakeholders to resolve its difficulties, the KDF leadership’s interventions have in many cases exacerbated the problem and added fuel to the fire.

The facts are that some in the KDF leadership may have made reckless statements aimed at certain sections of KDF stakeholders.

This, in response to these interventions of the KDF, has not helped matters.

We expected the KDF to rise above this but have been utterly disappointed.

Many statements have been made recently by the KDF about the crisis in WDF’s, but also out of genuine concern that if the KDF does not change course, it will increasingly discredit itself amongst the stakeholders, and forever lose its ability to unite and lead the people of khayelitsha.

I therefore plead for the non-alienation of stakeholders from the Khayelitsha Development Forum.

I plead with the dominant cabal not to attack or snipe at others, but offer constructive criticism, if any.

This will assist the KDF in reflecting and helping in a sober, deeply organizational manner, on how to correct the pending tragedy which might befall the organisation.

Often when we are engaged in a fierce political battles, our emotions and loyalty do not allow us to clearly see our role in the unfolding conflict.

I therefore appeal to all concerned to step back and carefully consider the nature of the challenges we are confronting, and also to understand that the KDF may be facing a crisis.

Despite the historical loyalty of many of its leaders, to the dominant strata, with its liberation credentials, and the fact that we have been together in the trenches in a number of campaigns, questions have increasingly been asked

about the direction the KDF is taking, and whose interests it is representing.

I therefore suggest the following in order to stave off any future conflict that may hamper unity and growth in our organisation. .Unity should be the ultimate game of any developmental forum. . Please note that corruption varies, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, influence peddling, graft and embezzlement.

Corruption undermines democracy and good governance by flouting or even subverting formal processes.

In your process of introspective diagnoses and report, I can rest assured you will find corruption within the KDF. Please act on this without fear, favour and prejudice. .It is common knowledge that the constitution is a written document of the rule of law and regulations in the KDF. There are reasons why the constitution is important at all times and why we should adhere to it.

The constitution is important because it outlines all the rights. It gives a complete list of all the things that we can and cannot do, and the rights that we have.

The constitution and its amendments protects us from each other, and it protects us from our own excesses, it protects us from the wrongful execution of programs.

It stops us from incriminating ourselves, our right to free speech, our right to bear arms, our right to freedom of religion and so on.

But if we persist on flouting the KDF rules, we will have illegitimacy in the KDF. This will tantamount to the representation of self-interests of individuals. .Please call a special plenary session to deal with the challenges mentioned above and convene the biennial General Meeting with immediately effect, so that you can take the people of Khayelitsha into confidence, persuing the KDF slogan: “People working together for sustainable development.

I know that tackling KDF means tackling many other political dynamics in Khayelitsha. I am forever hopeful that we can overcome these challenges, but your leadership is critical to achieving this.

I am willing to do anything in my power to make a difference. I only ask that the KDF does the same.

Teaching young art of business

F

or a day, learners at Ikhwezi Lesizwe Primary in Khayelitsha, had to think like serious business men and women.

It was during the Nedbank 4me Entrepreneur’s Day, which provides money management programme .

The programme is aimed at instilling an entrepreneurial culture and empowering learners nationwide to build financial fitness from an early age.

Desmond Osman, the head of Youth and Entry Level Banking Marketing at Nedbank said that the bank recognises that its role in society goes beyond just banking. ‘The youth form over 50% of the South African popula-

tion (and) are key to building the future we want for our nation in ensuring (that)we create a vibrant society and economy.”

Osman added: “There is no better time to shape or influence a young mind positively than at a young age.’

According to him, the programme continues to gain momentum, having reached over 72 000 learners, 100 000 parents and 1500 educators, “whose roles are critical, to ensure we make the things happen.”

Each participating school will receive a kit, teaching learners how to start their own business and manage their money.

The kit includes guidebooks for teachers,

with guidelines and implementation tips for use during classes, workbooks designed to teach learners how to start and run their own business and manage their money, “money maps” aimed at helping learners to plan and track their money, posters aimed at advertising the Entrepreneurship days and acting as reminders of the programme’ s four principles of spending, saving, growing and being good.

Learners who successfully complete the programme will be awarded certificates.

The criteria for the certificates will be based

on how much the learners spent the money they had saved, their contribution towards good causes and plans for potentially growing their business.

Principal Norma Mayeye said she was thrilled with the partnership between her school and the bank.

Warning to home owners The City is aware that private residential properties are increasingly being used for various activities, for example as small churches or places of worship, businesses and crèches.

While these uses are welcomed, property owners need to ensure that the use of their property is in line with the zoning of the premises and, where applicable, consent for alternative uses must be obtained.

A property zoned Single Residential allows for a dwelling house to be constructed. It also allows for additional uses such as home occupation, a bed and breakfast establishment (no more than six paying guests and no more than three rooms being used for guests), and home child care (a small crèche of up to six children). These additional uses are subject to certain limitations.

Owners of properties zoned for Single Residential 1 purposes must apply for and be granted a consent use or temporary departure if they do not comply with the limitations for additional uses; or want to operate a place of worship, small business (such as a house shop), guest house or crèche (more than six children); or want to build a second dwelling on the property.

If they fail to do so, for whatever reason, they will be in contravention

of the property’s zoning rights.

The City of Cape Town’s Municipal Planning By-law permits the City to take a variety of actions in respect of an unlawful land use.

An owner may make application to rectify the unlawful land use or building work, but will be required to pay an administrative penalty.

Legal action is the absolute last resort, therefore, property owners are encouraged to visit their local district planning office to verify whether the current use of the property complies with the zoning of the premises and, if not, what process they need to follow in order to comply with applicable legislation or to avoid further action.

The City’s land use and building inspectors are available to help property owners with any queries they may have regarding zoning matters and building applications so that together we can ensure that families and businesses can enjoy legally compliant, well-constructed, safe spaces.

Complaints relating to possible land use and building contraventions are to be submitted in writing to the City’s Property Enforcement Section at their local planning district office for their investigation.

It’s really embarrassing to see kids in school uniform being drunk during the week.

I don’t think these children are over 18 and they should not be allowed to buy liquor. The laws regulating the selling and the buying of liquor stipulates booze shouldn’t be sold to anyone below 18.

I wonder where these schoolkids could have bought their liquor and who the person is who undermines the law and

Tavern and shebeen owners should stop selling liquor to these young children.

he Jubilee Success Academy will be hosting the Jubilee Unity music festival at Eikendal sport ground on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November.

The festival will offer a jampacked line up with performances by Hemelbesem, Karin Kortjie, Warren Elliot, Strand Combo, N2 Jazz band, Riel dancers, Tribal Echo, Gugulethu Jazy Pioneers, the Winston Siljeur band, Root Rockers, Sons of Sellasie, Churchill Naude, Heinrich Isaacs and Pastor Kgotso over the course of the weekend.

The fun starts at 15:00 on Friday and 09:00 on Saturday and besides the on stage action, festival-goers can also look forward to children’s activities, a snake show, acrobatic and hip hop dance demonstration, a potjiekos competition, an antique car exhibition, food demonstrations and more.

The festival will serve as a fund-raiser for the Jubilee Success Academy’s community projects for next tear. The academy offers educational and financial assistance to learners from all walks of life along with providing weekly soup kitchens, annual Women’s Day conferences, and mentoring, networking and financial assistance for young entrepreneurs.

Tickets for the festival cost R50 for the Friday and R100 for the Saturday or R30 and R70 for children between the ages of 12 and 15. Children under 12 can enter free but must be accompanied by an adult. VIP tickets are available for the Saturday at R300 and there are still stalls available for both days at R400.

Learners discuss issues on air

L

earners from the Centre for Science and Technology (COSAT) in Khayelitsha, aired their first high school radio show last week.

And they’re not shying away from difficult topics. The group, known as the Optimistic Youth Reporters (OYR), debated teenage pregnancy in a twenty minute live broadcast for staff and their fellow students in the school hall.

Last Monday the presenters discussed whether teenage fathers should face the same consequences as teenage mothers and the role that each should play in raising the child.

Their debut guests were their fellow learners from the school who shared their thoughts on the subject.

Some responded in English while others spoke Xhosa. Music played in-between the dialogue.

“It’s expensive to raise a child, so the mother and the father must work together,” said a guest.

Another said, “The mother and the father play very different roles. The mother carries the baby for nine months, so she must stay at home in that time to make sure that the baby is healthy.

The father must be supportive and continue education. Once the baby is born, the mother can go back to school.”

“Teenage fathers took part in making the baby, so they should also take responsibility for the baby,” said another girl.

One of the presenters asked what teenage mothers can do if they do not want to depend on teenage fathers. ”We want to pull away from the stigma that Khayelitsha is corrupt and dangerous, and rather give it a positive stance.”

A girl guest responded: “They can go to NGOs that have clinics that will help support them, because sometimes their families

aren’t supportive of teenage mothers. There are also child grants.

Also, if they want the father to pay maintenance, they can go to family courts.”

A few students said that teenagers should avoid practising unsafe sex, which could lead to sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

Khanyisile Ngcolo, one of the show’s reporters, said, “I was trying to give the view from the women’s perspective. The dad, including stepfathers, must also play a role in raising the child. We want to cover topics about issues that affect the community, like gangsterism.

“I think the radio station provides a good platform for COSAT. The learners liked the idea of being informed,” said Thokozani Nqwili, another reporter.

DJ Elethu Rotsho, who spun the discs, said: “I panicked and couldn’t reach some of the buttons. Next time I’ll be more experienced.”

Rotsho explained that the OYR did research on the internet and through interviews conducted with learners both at COSAT and other schools.

Experienced radio journalist Linda Daniels of the Children’s Radio Foundation, has been working with OYR since 2013. CRF, together with OYR have been producing regular radio features for SAFM. For this, OYR received The Best Debaters Award at the National Youth Radio Awards.

Daniels says that the students have been taught about accuracy and ethical reporting. She was thrilled with their first performance, she said.

Their next radio instalment will be aired in the new year.

“We would love for the show to air frequently and we hope to get a transmitter in the future,” said Daniels.

Oldies get title deeds at last OWN CORRESPONDENT

T

hree senior citizens aged 78, 85 and 92, were among 20 beneficiaries who received title deeds for the Bardale serviced sites project in Mfuleni, on Tuesday.

Since 2008, more than 5 000 housing opportunities have already been issued to beneficiaries. All 5 681 serviced sites have been completed and the final beneficiaries will be moved onto their sites early next year. Nearly R200 million has been invested for this project.

The handover of 20 title deeds is an indication that the Bardale serviced sites project is a step closer to being home for all its beneficiaries.

This project consists of 5 681completed serviced sites and approximately 94% of these housing opportunities have already been issued to beneficiaries.

Move next year The final beneficiaries will be moved onto their sites early next year.

Over the years, families have been successfully relocated here and integrated from various communities, including Lwandle, Kosovo, Khayelitsha, Happy Valley, Maitland and Mfuleni.

Bardale is a serviced site development earmarked for emergency and urgent need cases, and its beneficiary allocation is guided by a Council resolution that was initially taken in 2006.

‘By handing over title deeds, the City is empowering beneficiaries to become property owners, which unlocks the economic opportunities that come with owning an asset.

The City will continue to make every effort to ensure that more housing opportunities are made available. Therefore we have gone full circle with the implementation of four People’s Housing Process (PHP) projects in Bardale this year so that we can provide formalised housing. A total of 80 houses have already been handed over to beneficiaries

Mzukisi Mbane, a young fashion designer and founder of Imprints designs blew the audience away with his collection at the 2015 South African Menswear week early this year and he also showcased his spring collection at the Mercedes-Banz Cape Town Fashion week in August.

Mbane is a 24 year old young man who has dream, who believes that in the absence of fear, dreams do come true.

“Growing up in a place such as Khayelitsha where everyone sees darkness and hopelessness, a place where all you hear is cant’s, wont’s and shouldn’t, you learn pretty fast that you have to speak louder than anyone else if you want to be heard,” he said.

The truth is we all have a voice and there comes a time when you have to fight for what you want, that time for Mr Mbane is now.

“I believe it’s how you screaming that no one can hear; the great Nelson Mandela once said “courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it,” he added.

The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear”.

Comedian Siv Ngesi hosted a boxing showcase on Thursday 22 October to mark the occasion, which included an exhibition bout between two of the country’s most exciting talents, Mabuti “Old Bones” Magwaca and Sinethemba “Last Born” Bam. Sobisi will be solely missed MBONGISENI MASEKO The death of man who made a huge impact in curbing crime through sport in Khayelitsha was described as a “great loss.”

Mthuthuzeli Sobisi, 47, passed away three Sundays ago, and was laid to rest on Saturday, in Mhlankomo, Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape.

He has been residing in Makhaza 39 Section, Hasana Crescent.

Sobisi, who was driven by the love of sport, concern about substance abuse by the youth in his community and also gangsterism, formed the Maya Football Club in 2008.

The initiative was met with good response as it attracted dozens of youth from Makhaza and other parts of Khayelitsha.

PR councillor Vuyokazi Matanzima, who worked with Sobisi since the inception of the club, highly praised him for making a positive contribution to the betterment of the area.

“I am so heart-broken by his death. He was a community builder. I was so shocked to learn about his death. This is a great loss to the community of Khayelitsha,” Matanzima said.

Matanzima and Sobisi worked on a youth programmes rendered by the City of Cape Town under the theme “A Child involved in Sports is away from Crime”.

He has been a mediator during the faction fights between the Vooras and Vatos gangsters who have been terrorizing the community of Makhaza thus spreading to other sections.

Matanzima also said Thandeka Gqada, the DA Member of Parliament, and other businessman, gave the assurances that the the team will continues even after his death.

Sobisi leaves behind his wife Thobeka Sobisi and four sons who have been supportive of his hard work, and as a result, they were part of his soccer team.

Attempts to get comment from BSA chairwoman Ntambi Ravele on how the limited allowance from the department had impacted the federation and how the recruitment of a new boss was progressing were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

But a source said: “The money coming in from the department is clearly not enough.

It might have increased but the difference is not significant. How do you even pay a CEO’s salary on that amount?”

Apart from the grant from the department, BSA also generates revenue from sanctioning fees for fights.

Groenewald also questioned Mbalula over which countries his department had identified as important international partners “to achieve the broader mandate of the BSA” and how his department was focusing its resources in a “strategic and efficient manner to this end”. The allowance Boxing South Africa (BSA) receives from the Department of Sport has only increased by R2,5 million for the current financial year.

A reply by Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula to a question by Democratic Alliance member Hermanus Groenewald earlier this month indicated that BSA received R10,4m for the 2015-16 financial year.

Mbalula’s response further disclosed that for the preceding financial year – 2014-15 – the cash-strapped BSA got only R7,9m from the department.

Groenewald also asked Mbalula what action his department had taken to address the “poor governance structures” of the BSA. Replied Mbalula: “We have appointed a new board and disciplined senior employees who were charged with serious offences. We have also provided administrative support to BSA.” The senior officials who faced disciplinary action were former CEO Moffat Qithi and Loyiso Mtya, who served as acting CEO after Qithi was suspended. Qithi was relieved of his duties after a disciplinary case while Mtya quit before his matter could be finalised.

gulethu, Nyanga and Crossroads have it tough. It’s almost like they have to work twice as hard to make it, especially if you consider that Ajax is the only Cape team in the PSL. As a result, most of these players eventually resign themselves to the reality that they will never turn pro, no matter how good they are.

They play in amateur leagues and tournaments, usually in front of decent crowds, always dreaming of showcasing their skills on a bigger platform. But no scouts ever come to watch them.

It is also in these neighbourhoods that you will find young boys whose loftiest dream in life is to rob a bank.

True! It is a battle of choices, both good and bad, and those who make the good choices sometimes never live to see their dreams fulfilled. They hang on to hope because one of them has managed to make it straight out of the hood. Spare a thought for those kids who looked up to him and also for a family that has lost a son and a provider.

hen a friend informed me about the news of Sonwabile Cecil Lolo’s passing on Sunday, my eyes almost popped out of their sockets.

This facial expression was brought about by a sense of disbelief and a certain kind of shock.

I immediately wished he would go on to tell me that he was merely pulling my leg.

No, it can’t be Lolo! Not ‘Hliph’ (as he was affectionately known).

Not the bubbly character with the naughty smile, not the steely Ajax Cape Town defender, not the ladies’ man from Khayelitsha. Oh no. Not him. But, sadly, it turned out the news was true. Cape Town and South Africa is mourning.

In our line of duty as journalists, we more often than not develop relations with the people we write stories about.

Bosom buddies we might not have been, but I knew the 27-year-old as someone who was always up for a chat about football. It all sounds strange to me now that the last time I spoke to him, by chance, was on August 14 as the Urban Warriors were about to board a flight to Jo’burg, where they were scheduled to play Bidvest Wits in the second leg of the MTN8 final.

I had been speaking to Prince Nxumalo.

Next thing I know, Lolo is on the line, having grabbed the phone from his teammate upon realising I was on the line. True to his crazy and energetic nature, there was no greeting.

He shot: “Ekse bro Lungaz, vuka maan!

Hey ndithi vuka, vuka, vuka.” We had a brief chat and I wished him well for the game. He said I should not worry because “we are going through to the final”. And they did.

Yet again, the carnage on our roads has claimed the life of a young South African footballer. It’s like a chronic disease.

Road accidents robbing us of our stars is a spectre hanging over our heads like the sword of Damocles- e know it can strike anytime, yet we pray it doesn’t.

But, for me, the most saddening and heartbreaking part about Lolo’s death is that it happened at a time when his career was skyrocketting. Since he got promotion to the Ajax first team, he has for the most part lived in the shadows of other players. He wasn’t one to hog the spotlight.

He would quietly go about his business and never even once questioned his non-selection for Bafana Bafana. He was also knocking on that national team door though.

But death had other ideas.

Death has put a halt to the success story that was Cecil Lolo. Aspiring Western Cape footballers from areas like Khayelitsha, Gu-
