DONATION: PETROLEUM GIANT COMES TO THE AID OF ORPHANS
Wheels give kids a go MBONGISENI MASEKO Life will never be the same for children and staff at Abaphumeleli Home of Safety (AHS) after taking ownership of a mini-bus donation from a petroleum company. Abaphumeleli is based in, Ilitha Park in Khayelitsha. Klaus Lombardozzi, Customer Service Excellence Manager at Shell, said the donation was part of their reach-out programmes to those in need. “I hope it will make a great difference and also hope it will bring relief to the centre. What the centre is doing is humanity. The
centre provides hope that we need in the country to develop children that are in need,” Lombardozzi said. AHS which is currently a home to 30 orphaned and abandoned children was founded by Evelyn Makhasi in 2000. They children are between the ages of zero to 18 years. Makhasi said the mini bus will surely bring a much needed difference. “I want to thank all those who contributed to buying the mini bus. I am so glad. Children were getting soaking wet when walking to school during rainy days, but now they have a transport...I am grateful,” Makhasi
said. It was revealed during the handover that because of seemingly insurmountable difficulties, the centre almost closed down, but Makhasi said her husband Sipho and daughter Nompumelelo put their shoulders to the wheel and the home survived. Sadly, Nompumelelo sadly passed away shortly before graduating as a qualified nurse, in 2011. “It became difficult to look after the family and also the children. I was struggling, but my husband and late daughter discouraged me from closing it down. . Sipho Makhasi will continue giving his
support by transporting the children. Councillor Nomvuyo Mafoko, of Ward 92, thanked Makhasi for starting the centre which is helping the children. “We cannot ask for a better person to do what you are doing here, because its not easy. Chief Gwebindlala Nojawolo said: “God has blessed you. The dream has been fulfilled.I want to congratulate her. She did a great job for starting the centre,” he said. All the children are referred to Abaphumeleli by the Department of Social Development.
