ouched by the plight of a struggling family in Kuyasa a group of church ministers have vowed to use the power of the pulpit to help them.

The African Ministers of Indigenous Churches Organisation (Amico) led by Bishop Reuben Sizwe Nyobole , Reverend Thandekile Zondani and Bishop Xolani Nyanda visited the Ngcotyeni household on Tuesday to deliver much needed food par-

cels to the family.

“This family is devastated by poverty and you can see they have lost hope in everything,” said Bishop Nyobole.

He said the family’s plight was brought to them by neighbours who witnessed their unbearable suffering.

Nondumiso Mganisa who lives nearby said this family of five “lived on nothing and the four sons usually fought over food”.

“Their mother, Nophumzile, is selling amathumbu(sheep intestines) and has no fur-

ther income or grant...nothing,” she said.

Reverend Thandekile Zondani urged people to think of poor people during this festive season.

“The haves must think of people who sleep on empty stomachs and make a difference in their lives,” he said.

He urged fellow men of cloth to pray for the family and everyone in similar plight.

Community leader Thandiwe Mkontwana said they will assist the family in getting their life back by contacting social workers.

“This is broken home and we must help them because their situation affects us neighbours,” she said.

Nophumzile also appealed to her relavtives to help out.

“Ever since my husband died , no one in the family is helping. These four boys must be circumcised but I have nothing on my own,” she cried.

Stokvel members in a joyous mood after shairing their groceries .

Stokvels fill food baskets Hard work pays off in the end and that seemed to be the case with some kasi residents after they shared their end of the year grocery savings in Philippi over the weekend.

These residents formed part of ninety five members of the Siyakha Mothers Project Savings Scheme.

The organization has members from Delft, Gugelethu, Khayelitsha, Nyanga and other surrounding areas.

The scheme has operated since the 1998 and each member contributes a monthly premium of R300.

Then each member receives about R7000 worth of groceries that include a sheep, four 10 kilograms of mealie meal, bread flour, samp and sugar.

There is also eight rice packs of the same size, four boxes of chicken, canned vegetable and a variety of other items, amongst them to prepare for their Christmas feasts.

“I appreciated Siyakha operations and benefits after I saw what my neighbour achieved yearly after she became involved with the organisation.

“This is helpful to us as struggling people.

It offers us good opportunity because sometimes we unable to save properly for the end of the year on our own,” boasted said Noxolo Somfongo (41) of Delft.

“I am immensely overwhelmed that the day has arrived because I am now assured of food for Christmas and beyond” said Shakes Makhangela (64), a father of six from Khayelitsha.

Makhangela has been with the organization since the beginning of the year and also encouraged other residents to learn about the advantages of savings schemes.

Mandisa Lusizi, Siyakha Project’s chairperson said they also fundraised their already saved cash by loaning it to other residents during the year to enable each member to receive R7000 worth groceries.

“There were 23 members in 1998 after we struggled to afford the high rising grocery costs.

“We first saved cash which we shared amongst ourselves by the year end, and later changed to groceries after we realised that groceries lasted longer than cash, said Lusizi.

Needy kids fed and gifted MBONGISENI MASEKO It was all smiles for children at Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha, as they were treated to an early Christmas party last Friday.

SA Reticulation Services, an electrical services company, organised the memorable day for the children and also gave them some gifts.

A group of employees from the company dug deep in their pockets to raise the funds for the mouth–watering meals and presents for 121 orphans and vulnerable children who range from the ages of 0 to 18.

Ashlyn Gallant, the Human Resource (HR) and Quality Director for SA Reticulation Services, said that was their way of ploughing back to the community that supported their business since the company was established in 2010.

“We are saying thank you to the community that supports us.

We are very humbled to be running our business here. Our staff members, cars and material have been safe ever since we started working here.

Rosalia “Rosie” Mashale, the managing director and founder of Baphumelele Children’s Home, said they were very happy for what the company did for the children.

“Christmas came early for the children. Sometimes children in such centres get forgotten during this time of the year.

That means a lot to them. They need that feeling of being appreciated. The centre is here to stay,” Mashale said.

The centre has been in existent for 15 years.

“They do not hesitate to help where it is needed. Children are our future. They did a great thing for the centre,” Lonzi said.

“I realised that there was a demand for my clothing style. I called some of my designers and we played around with ideas and soon we came up with the concept for Township Talent,” said the actress.

She sub-contracts three designers and also sources other young talent from the township.

Andrea said they use imported fabric.

“You know, I’m an arts person, but I also love traditional things because they describe who I am.

“That is why you will often find me wearing traditionally inspired clothes, but not in an old-fashioned way.

“We play around with the fabric to come up with something good,” she said.

GOOD DEEDS: Former political prisoner and now businessman and his wife to the rescue

Senior citizens get an up-shot ZILA MKONTO “If you have not slept on a hungry stomach then you will not understand poverty.”

This was the touching message delivered by a recepient of a grocery parcel donated by a former Robben Island prisoner and now businessman Mikkie Xayiya and his wife Nwabisa to more than 65 elders belonging to Noxolo Social Club of Khayelitsha.

A University of Cape Town (UCT) site facilitator Tsuki Xapa said she was also touched by the sight of hungry old men and women when she visited Shawco offices in Khayelitsha where the group meets.

“I discovered that this group was not receiving support since their leader Mrs Lizzy Alexander passed away three years ago and I vowed to help them,” said Tsuki.

She then contacted the Department of Social Services to help facilitate grants for them and made contact with Meals-0nWheels to provide food three times a day.

Since then their situation has changed for the better and the elderly are receiving proper meals every day.

Gqibile Koyo one of the elderly citizen in the group praised Tsuki for “taking care of the group.”

“When she came we were in a desperate situation but now we can see light and all of us are happy to be in this club,” said Gqibile.

Ndabeni Ndini (77), said all their members rely on the food from the club because their grant money is not enough to feed their families.

A surprise was revealed last Friday much to the delight of everyone in the group, Tsuki told the group that Mr and Mrs Xayiya had donated abour R30 000 to the club to buy

Tsuki Xapa with Nonkululeko Ndabula and Maggie Mokoena, members of the Noxolo Social Club whom she helped get groceries donated by Mikkie Xayiya and his wife Nwabisa.

A Khayelitsha man is in desperate need of financial assistance after his granddaughter died while she was allegedly sleeping with her drug addict mom.

Pensioner Martin Mhlonyane from the D Section of Site C says has been back and fought seeking assistance after 9 month old Nontyatyambo passed away on Tuesday night last week.

INSPIRED: Writers bleed on stories that tell our lives, despite lack of reader support

Amabali ethu ngolwimi lwethu Three young men from different walks of life have been inspired to prove the might of pen by churning their stories into books.

First we meet Linda Bhayi (35). By day he is as a dedicated cop putting baddies behind bars, but when off-duty, he bleeds ink.

Bhayi (35) is a detective stationed at Cape Town Central Police Station.

A father of a two-year-old, he works in the fraud investigations department where the workload is hectic as cops cannot leave any stone unturned to find and lock up the outlaws.

Bhayi who comes from the rural Eastern Cape town of Mtshayelweni, joined the police force in 2006.

But he always finds time from his busy work schedule to write.

He writes folklore books in Xhosa to encourage the majority of non-English speaking Mzansi residents to read.

His first book titled uTshawe noMkwayi was published in 2009. So far, he has sold a measerly 250 copies.

The 48-page book explores the lives of two brothers, Tshawe and Mkwayi.

Mkwayi gets expelled from his family after having an incestuous relationship with his brother’s daughter.

The book sells for R100 a copy, although not yet available in city libraries.

“From a young age, I loved reading. Reading is one of the most inspiring things,” he said.

Bhayi said he was prompted to write his book in Xhosa to promote the language.

He is currently working on a new book titled Wena Thando Nozala Wokufa.

It is a story that explores the life of a young woman who comes to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth. She falls in love with a young man who pays for her studies. She later cheats on him with a fellow academic and dumps the boyfriend, who has been paying for her varsity fees. . Sipho Kekezwa, who has just won the Sanlam Silver 2013 award for his his young adult fiction , Ndizigwaze Ngokwam! lives with his other half in Khayelitsha. His dream is to be a successful writer and a language services provider.

A prolific writer, he spends most of his

time either reading a novel or the Bible, writing by using the free computer access offered by the Smartcape project or, if not, at a writers’ workshop.

This is his third attempt at the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature Awards, his first being shortlisted in 2009, a novel that he went on to self-publish.

His second novel, also self-published, received a publishing grant from the Centre for the Book, an agency of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

Kekezwa has won numerous prizes, mostly runner up prizes in writing competitions both in English and isiXhosa. This novel, Ndizigwaze Ngokwam! was first written in 1997/1998 as a radio drama, then as a stage play.

Ndizigwaze Ngokwam! centers around two teenage boys Xola and Ndoda, who are the best of friends, .

Xola’s mother died when he was very young and he is being raised by his loving but poor grandmother.

Ndoda, on the other hand, has dropped out of school and has an easier life. He is spoiled by his mother and becomes a problem child and cause as much trouble as he can.

The story plays out in an unnamed township in Cape Town to illustrate the shared struggles of all the townships in the city with poverty, unemployment, alcohol and crime.

It is a coming-of-age story where the boys scam people out of their money and how their crimes eventually catch up with them.

Another author who is making a name for himself is Loyiso Maurice Mgqatsa who recently self-publishe a drama book titled Ndiyazisola.

Mgqatsa wants young and old to read his stories because he feels “I have a message to pass to my nation.”

He says its very diffucult to write and publish books if readers are not supportive.

Themba Tyongozi, the last of the men is not a writer but a rights campaigner.

An Albino, Tyongozi showed us a book that speaks widely about the perceptions and challenges facing the albino people.

“People must read more on albinos and start treaing us in a good way,” he said.

Ending on a high note Cape Town City Ballet ends its 80th anniversary celebrations on a high note, with a magical production of the ballet, Cinderella.

Filled with lots of fun and laughter for the whole family, Cinderella will be presented at Artscape from Friday 19 December to Saturday 10 January. The matinee performance on Wednesday 24 December will include the very popular annual Fairy Parade.

Lego artwork will wow you The world-renowned Lego art exhibit, titled The Art of The Brick, will have young and old drop their jaws.

The exhibition opens at the Watershed Exhibition Centre at the V&A Waterfront on Friday 12 December.

The 12th month and its mysteries Let me start off this week’s column by sharing a joke which I recently heard...

A man is staggering home drunk late at night when he’s stopped by a policeman.

“What are you doing out here at this time of night,” asks the officer. “I’m going to a lecture,” the man replies. “And who’s going to give a lecture at this hour,” the policeman asks. “My wife,” replies the man.

This joke reminds me the month of December, where the sight of an intoxicated and staggering man will not surprise you.

There is always a buzz about December; the term currently doing the rounds is “ke Dezember boss”. After a long year people just want to relax and have fun.

It’s that month where, if you go to the Joe Gqabi transport interchange, you’ll find boys – soon to be men – ululating, dancing and screaming as they wait for buses to transport them to the places they call home.

Scores of people – once termed refugees by the sometimes irritating woman nicknamed Nontsapho – make their way to the Eastern Cape for the holidays.

Yuletide is a period where families come together to be merry, while for many it is a time to reflect on a year that was. I have a different thinking to many people, in that I treat December as just another month in the calendar. For more,

This is a time where fun-loving men pull disappearing acts on their wives and then return home with empty wallets and broken hearts. As a result, they will be going from one mashonisa to the next, so they could survive the dreaded month that is “Januworry”. Eish!

This seems to occur every year, which for me is very funny and silly.

Are we just being ignorant?

I was chatting to a colleague about this last week and he told me instead of going out every day and coming back later to face a barrage of questions from your better half, it’s better to disappear for a long period. He reasons if you do that, you’ll at least only be screamed at once and not every day.

In some instances guys also switch off their cellphones, to be incommunicado and remain undisturbed when they’re having a jol. In a group, only one guy’s cellphone will be on and loaded with airtime, in case someone needs to make a call. Thereafter, it would be switched off. That’s December for you....

Have a blessed festive season, dear readers. And if you do happen to see me staggering along the street at 02:00, just say a silent prayer for me, because I might just be on my way to a lecture.

Rape accused pastor to answer, says state JOHNNIE ISAAC The state said it has completed its investigation on rape allegations against Khayelitsha pastor Dumisani Mathibela, and the pastor has a case to answer.

Magistrate Gary Haremse said that Mathibela’s trial will be moved to the Regional Court based in Khayelitsha when it resumes on 4 February 2015.

Mathibela faces six counts of rape after two women members of his congregation laid charges.

One said Mathibela first raped her in August 2012 after he had assisted her with accommodation.

She said she fell pregnant and was forced

by Mathibela to give the child up for adoption.

Both women said they had been afraid to speak out because Mathibela had threatened them with consequences if they reported him.

Mathibela denied the charges, claiming he had relationships with the women.

Magistrate Haremse reminded the accused of the seriousness of the charges that he is facing and the consequences should he fail to adhere to bail conditions. Bail was set at R5,000.-

Chumani Ngojo added the SABC Crown Gospel Music award to the list of his winnings for this year, in Durban, recently.

Ngojo wins gospel award MBONGISENI MASEKO Chumani Ngojo’s prayer was answered after he won an award at the 7th SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards which were held in Durban, recently.

Ngojo was the first artist coming from the province to have won an award in the awards.

Ngojo speaking at his Khayelitsha home said he and his team prayed a lot to win the award which saw them beating Loyiso Bala.

He was nominated for his song titled “We praise” in Best Gospel Praise Song along with Bala, Papane Bulwana and Spirit of Praise Volume 5 which is Benjamin Dube’s group.

The song also put Ngojo on the list for Best Contemporary Song nominees alongside with Khaya Mthethwa, Ndo Dlakala and Lynette Jonathan, but he did not win that award.

“We prayed for the win. We were sure when we went there that we will win. It was a great feeling. A boy from a humbled community like Khayelitsha won the award. It is a favour from God. Some people thought we were wasting our time when we submitted our CD. I believe nothing is impossible with God, you just need to believe in him,” Ngojo said.

He was with her wife, Liyema Ngojo, when he went to collect the award.

This has been the year for winning to Ngojo and his group of 13 members.

Ngojo also won the awards for the best male artist and best contemporary song during the Gospel Victory Award, which was held at Arts Cape, on 28 November.

Luyanda Yonke, an artist in their stable, Nu Praise holdings, also won the best produced song during the awards.

Ngojo wrote the song which won him all the awards in 2009 and he edited released it with their album which is also titled after the song, early in the year.

The album was well received by his fans as they bought over 500 copies on the day they launched it in October.

“It is a vibe song and catchy. My target is youth. I also accommodated old people in the album. Our future plan is to make sure grow our fan base in the province that we can rely on. We also planning to make a national tour,” Ngojo, who originates from Mdantsane in the East London, also thanked his church, Apostolic Faith Mission in Samora Machel and his fans.

Take a stance and revolt During apartheid, black people were oppressed and exploited by white colonial settlers who grabbed our land, its natural resources and our country South Africa.

The Pan African Congress (PAC) and other political structures fought against apartheid until the colonial settlers were defeated in 1990s.

Negotiations, which eventually led to the new South African government, were held. Now government caters equally for all the people of South Africa.

Yet black people are still oppressed and exploited, as they still live in poverty, are unemployed, face inequality and are without land.

The truth is that the ANC-led government has failed to deliver basic social services such as water, sanitation, electricity, houses, toilets, health, employment and welfare, while it has also failed in combating crime and corruption.

It is dishonest with South Africans when it comes to service delivery.

ANC leaders act like the mafia, while government promotes neo-colonialism, neo-liberalism, neo-capitalism and imperialism in this country.

In 1990, the ANC told people not pay for services, as the apartheid government was not delivering the basic social services to townships.

It promised people it would scratch old municipal debts after the 1994 elections.

But they failed to do so, as some people are still paying the old debt in conjunction with the newly accumulated

debt; some have paid more than R100 000 for municipal services.

Therefore, I call on governmental departments and municipalities to scratch or cancel the old debt, because we are battling to pay it.

We are struggling to put food on our tables and meet our debt requirements.

I call on all political parties to revolt against the ANC-led government and its insistence that people have to pay off municipal debt.

It is time for the PAC, Azapo, EFF, APC, UDM, UCDP, Agang, Sopa, BPC, PAM, NFP, IFP, the unions and all South Africans to revolt against the payment of apartheid debt.

The ANC-led government is currently paying the apartheid debt to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

But since it took over the reins of this country, it has failed to deliver the basic social services to the poorest of the poor people.

National government must stop paying the apartheid debt to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, because the United Nations declared apartheid to be a war against humanity.

Instead, government must use the resources to deliver basic social services to its people.

The PAC says “no” to neo-colonialism, neo-liberalism, neo-capitalism and imperialism. The PAC says poor people must be put first and there must be no more empty promises.

Double check qualifications People are using fake degrees to be appointed in top jobs across the country.

This happens in all sectors – in both government and the private sector. The trend is worsening daily and most people are hired to do jobs they are not equipped to do.

There are so many people who don’t deserve to be where they are today, because those responsible for hiring them say they do not have the time or resources to check whether the “qualifications” are legitimate.

This is utter nonsense.

The Grade 12 results for this will soon

be released and matriculants will be warned to be wary of fly-by-night colleges.

Do they honestly think matriculants have the time or know-how to check if the colleges are accredited, if the people who have the power and resources to investigate these illegitimate colleges continue to sit and avoid the issue?

Let’s expose people with fake qualifications and, by doing so, the fly-by-night colleges will close their doors once and for all.

Blaze destroys 46 shacks Residents of Kanana informal settlement in Gugulethu have blamed power cuts for a fire which left 100 people homeless on Friday.

City of Cape Town’s Disaster Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said 46 shacks burnt to the ground, leaving at least 107 people, including 11 children, displaced.

Community leader Thuliswa Bulana said there was a blackout when the fire broke out.

“Normally the community use candles and paraffin under those circumstances. It is those things that cause lots of fires,” said Bulana.

Residents claimed the fire began when a resident left a candle burning and went to the shop.

On her way back home, she found her shack burning, with neighbours trying to extinguish the fire.

The blaze started at about 20:30, they said.

One of the neighbours, Zafika Mxokozeli,

said she saw the fire and rushed to the scene.

When she realised that the fire was out of control, she ran to her house to try and save her belongings.

“We could only save the fridge, TV and a few minor things. Everything else burnt to ashes,” she said.

Three adults and four children live in her home.

Nontobeko Mfene battled flames to rescue her two-year-old son. She has burn wounds on her arm and ear.

Mfene said she heard a noise outside and was on her way to investigate what was happening, when she realised there was a fire.

“My son was asleep. I rushed inside to grab him and took him out,” Mfene explained.

Nolusindiso Mvuka said she lost money and shopping stamps she and a group of women were saving to buy groceries since the beginning of the year.

Another resident who identified himself by his clan name, Msuthu, said: “Government needs to do something about our situation and provide us with houses. President Zuma was here before the elections to campaign. He said this is not a good area for people to live, but now that elections are done, he has forgotten about us.”

Msuthu has been living in Kanana since 1998.

He has survived three fires in the community since then.

“Every time we experience a fire disaster, we lose everything and have to start afresh.

We don’t have clothes. Our children don’t have clothes; in January it’s back to school again. They will need uniforms,” he said.

Solomons-Johannes said the affected households were provided with hot meals for three days, blankets and starter kits to rebuild their homes. – GroundUp

Road running: Annual race draws athletes from all walks of life

Zintle Xiniwe of New Balance AC cemented her place as the queen of the Gugulethu Reconciliation Day 10km race, as she won the women’s section of the event for the seventh time on Tuesday.

The men’s race was won by UWC’s Anthony Timotens.

The annual race, organised by the RCS Gugulethu AC, attracted a record 1225 runners from across the peninsula and beyond.

Race organiser Marshall Moila said the number of participants was the same as the first race held 14 years ago.

“It’s exciting; now this race is becoming entrenched in the minds of runners and the public at large. This year we held a music festival in conjunction with the race; this will become a tradition as we go forward,” said Moila.

Thabo Tutu of the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport said it was important that the race be held on Reconciliation Day. “Sport plays a pivotal part in harnessing society. Today we saw athletes from all walks of life enjoying friendliness and love,” Tutu said.

RCS COO Regan Adams said the historic event needs support.

“This is a day of unity; we are commemorating our rich history. Being here today is a good thing,” he said.

Adams added that the race encouraged a healthy lifestyle among participants.

Many first time runners such as Nomvuyo Lande enjoyed themselves and vowed to participate in more races in the future.

“It was so nice crossing the finish line; I want to do this often,” Lande exclaimed.

RCS Gugulethu chairman Thobile Ndzube thanked everyone who made the day a success.

Former Banyana Banyana striker Nocawe Skiti’s brace for Cape Town Roses ended Gauteng’s dominance in the Sasol League National Championships on Sunday.

Roses beat Palace Super Falcons 2-1 at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth to win the championship.

They became only the second team from outside Gauteng to take the title, after Mpumalanga’s Detroit Ladies won the inaugural championship in 2009.

Roses and Falcons met in the same stage of the competition in 2011, and Roses were on the receiving end of a drubbing, losing to the experienced Tembisa side.

Skiti’s second half goals also saw her become the top goalscorer of the tournament with 12 goals, followed by teammate Nandipha Booi with 10 goals.

The match started at a slow pace, with only four attempts at goals in the first half, most coming from the Falcons, but none were converted.

The Western Cape side were not able to use the strong wind to their advantage in the first half, managing instead to score

both goals against the wind.

Roses coach Xoliwe Madikane said after the failure to convert in the first half, they had to defeat the Falcons by scoring against the wind.

“This is mission accomplished; we came for it and we got it. This was the year we were meant to take it, especially after our good league season, winning all our matches,” Madikane said.

“This being a coastal city, it was like playing at home. I told my players to take chances. The plan was not to concede in the first half, even without scoring. We wanted to score against the wind, so that we could frustrate them.”

Falcons coach Tyron Damons blamed the loss on his charges’ complacency. which led to the loss. “I’m heartbroken. It seems Roses wanted it more. My girls became complacent, thinking they could walk over any team,” he said.

“We thought we would break the record and take the cup back home. Next season we have to prepare better and make sure we qualify.”

The People’s Team, Santos, regained their winning form on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium with a narrow 1-0 win over neighbours Vasco da Gama.

The visitors looked more threatening and played the better football, yet, it was Santos who opened up the scoring when Carl Lark found the back of the net in the 37th minute.

Farouk Abrahams’ side defended well and held onto their one-goal lead, and ultimately went on to claim the victory following their three-match losing streak. Both FC Cape Town and Milano reside in the top five on the NFD table, which meant a tough contest at the NNK Rugby Stadium.

Sibusiso Masina gave the African Beasts a 1-0 lead into the break, but Devon Saal found the back of the net late in the game to ensure the two sides shared the spoils.

RC Athletico tasted their first defeat on Friday evening following the departure of head coach Zane Ryklief, who took up a new role as Desmond Crowie’s assistant at Milano United. Glendene displayed their dominance in the league when they overcame Athletico 2-1 in a top of the table encounter.
