kamva Labantu, one of a long standing groups of NGOs in the township, is pulling out all stops to raise a whooping R1,5 million by the end of the year.

On the back of a campaign called Fuel2Grow, the campaign aims to assist vulnerable children from broken families with food, school stationery, transport fees, and all the support necesary for the livelihood of a child.

Ikamva Labantu was established in 1963,

and is appealing for help from the public to reach this target.

General Manager Nyasha Manjengenja, speaking at the launch, which was held at the Rainbow Centre in NY135 in Gugulethu, said the organisation already offers an afterschool programme to children between six and 18 years old.

The programme includes meals, school uniforms, additional home support, sports, the arts, primary health screenings and academic support.

I guess if toyi-toying was a sport, we would be clinching gold medals at the Olympic Games.

We’re talking here about 10- and 11-year-olds! I know how important it is to stand up for one’s rights, but I definitely feel it is not the learners’ place to fight these battles the way they are doing.

They miss valuable tuition time and, when they fail at year end, will be the first to complain. I blame it all on the culture of toyi-toyi, which is now prevalent in our communities.

The young ones can see that their mothers, fathers, uncles and aunts have only one way of making sure they are listened to–by taking to the streets, barricading roads and burning tyres and government property.

Hooliganism rules the roost. You only have to look at the protest in Langa last week to fully grasp my point. Residents protesting over housing and service delivery issues, shut the area down.

People could not go to work, as the rail service was crippled for a number of days. I also noticed from pictures in the media that those who were in the forefront, throwing stones at passing cars, were young kids. Should they not have been at school?

Preparing Knowledge Professionals

Pupils from Joe Slovo High School in Khayelitsha delivered a memorandum of grievances to the Western Cape Education Department, claiming that pregnant learners were fined R850, latecomers R2 and misbehaving pupils R500 by the school.

I admire that the learners had the courage to raise their complaints against the school principal, but could there not have been a better way of doing it, rinstead of staying away from class?

I’m sitting here thinking what would have befallen us during our schooling days had we dared to complain about the harsh treatment we received at the hands of some teachers.

Harshness was the name of the game during our time, trust me!

These days, even primary school learners revolt against the school leadership whenever they feel like it.

At one of the local primary schools I attended, learners protested about some issue.

This drove one of the teachers to write to me: “Hey Lunga hud? Zuke uzobona iskolo sakho. Zange ndaxakwa, skhumbula nina ngoku. Abantwana bethu baphandle as we speak bayatoy-toya.”

school teacher, loved music and she introduced me to great music from a very early age,”.

“There was always music playing in the house...I realise now that she loved strong Black female musicians or singers.

She introduced me to the late Miriam Makeba, who I grew to adore. She also loved Nina Simone, Letta Mbulu, Aretha Franklin and later Busi Mhlongo.”

At the age of 12, Nono joined a local music and dance group, and when she turned 19, she left these shores to study Jazz and Contemporary Music at Tshwane University of Technology.

Her studies in this field helped transform her into a composer and the dynamic singer she is today.

Nono then started to share stages with South African artists, and as a supporting act for the likes of Miriama Makeba, Judith Sephuma and Monique Bingham.

She’s since blossomed into a fully-fledged singer in her own right, and has an album out called True Call, songs of which she composed and produced.

The album received great reviews from jazz great Themba Mkhize, who called it “brave and unique, with a wonderful story to tell; a breath of fresh air and something people will hear about for the longest time”.

She has also shared the stage with the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, Hugh Masekela, Dizu Plaatjies, Ernie Smith, Lungiswa Plaatjies and Jabu Khanyile.

Nono has also performed at the Kaya FM Jazz Unplugged Session, the Standard bank

Singer, composer and producer Nono Joy of Jazz.

One of the her tracks, Baleka is the official soundtrack for the literature project, Long Story Short, featuring actress and activist Hlubi Mboya.

Her Sunday performance is supported by Concerts SA, a joint South African/Norwegian initiative, under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub within the SAMRO Foundation.

Financial, administrative and technical support is received from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts Norway.

The project aims to support live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create a vibrant and viable live music circuit. The show starts at 3pm.

IT gurus have grand designs MANDLA MAHASHE

uyanda Gcabo and a group of IT professionals who offer free tutorials to ICT learners in Langa, is inviting others skilled in the field to come forward to help the youth.

Gcabo and his group offer their services in order to fast-track ICT training for learners in Langa.

Based at St Louis Centre, they provide free tutorials in computer programming, teaching them coding on weekends.

“Our programme is an extension of what they are currently being taught at the centre, but with a more practical spin, in that we are giving them real work place experience.

We are hoping to get them work-ready so that when they leave the course, they will be able to adapt to the professional space,” said Gcabo.

Gcabo said that they have started to build a system where the young coders are developing a registration system for their acade-

“In this way they can say that they have a working product that they have built and it will continue being developed by other learners so they can continue to work on it,” Gcabo explained.

He said that they needed other professionals, not only those who are in the IT industry, to come on board.

“It’s not just about the IT skills but other expertise that a person needs to learn to be a rounded professional. We need to a have a group of young people that are solution driven so that we can improve our communities.

One of the learners is 27-year-old Phumlani Qingana, who said that the project will bring him closer to his dream of one day developing a career choice application for school going children.

“It is exciting because we are actually building a product that is going to be used.

The website and the app will be useful to oncoming learners so that makes me proud,” he said.

Local businessman in line for top television channel award MANDLA MAHASHE A young local entrepreneur who started his successful business with just R600 is once again in line for a national business award.

Bheki Kunene, the 28 year old founder of Mindtrix Media, has been nominated as Business Innovator of the Year on this year’s ANN7 South African of the Year Awards.

Kunene started his creative design company that specialises in web development and design, printing, marketing material and developing apps from his Gugulethu home.

According to him, his company now boasts clients from African countries such as Angola and Zimbabwe as well as the US, Italy and Vietnam.

He said he started his business in 2009 and despite being kicked out of high school, his business has grown to a team of eight techies.

His list of accolades include 2015 Hennessey Businessman of the Year award, Best Young Enterprise of the African Growth in 2015, The Most Outstanding Business by the University of Stellenbosch in 2013 as well as the 2014 Acacia Global Business Award.

Despite this success Kunene believes that his biggest achievement is that through his story, he has inspired other local entrepreneurs.

“I think if people have to vote for us then it has to be because we have proved that your background doesn’t have to determine whether or not you are going to succeed.

Heritage shapes pulse of nation MANDLA MAHASHE

oung children need to understand the importance of Heritage Day for it to not lose its meaning.

This was the message at the Vukukhanye Primary School’s Heritage Day event, which took place on Friday morning.

The all day event saw school children dressed in traditional attire, singing and dancing to folklore music.

According to the school principal Michael Daniels, the event was meant to raise awareness of the day and its importance.

“Learners must know what the origin of this public holiday is and why it is celebrated today.

They need to understand why it is so important and what it means for different cultures. In that way they might learn to be more accepting of different people and their

cultural backgrounds.

There were also traditional arts and crafts as well as traditional foods prepared by the teachers at the school.

Pozna Gomomo from the Vuka Sana Life Skills project said that it was very important for learners to learn about their culture from a very young age.

Alluding to the fact that the day is referred to as the Braai Day in various societies within the country, she said that they needed to celebrate the authentic meaning through unity.

“They must never underestimate the power of oneness. They must understand the history and understand that this day was almost forever referred to as Shaka Day. It was then called Heritage Day to accommodate other cultural groups living in this country. They should then also protect it,” said Gomomo.

The Cape Town Fringe Festival is in full swing at the moment, with a stellar line-up of productions for younger audiences on offer at the Makukhanye Arts Room in Khayelitsha and Langa’s Theatre in the Backyard and Guga S’Thebe.

Very little audiences can look forward to a free performance of Le Reve du Lucie at Gugu S’Thebe at 12:00 on Wednesday 5 October (the show is free for children under 12 and adults pay R30).

This production makes use of puppets to tell a story about childhood nightmares and how to change them into marvellous dreams.

Children under the age of 12 can also look forward to

Falling Off the Horn at Gugu S’Thebe from 12:00 on Saturday (1 October), where mime, masks, dance and shadowpuppetry are combined to tell the story of a young man’s flight to South Africa and the extraordinary struggles he must face on arrival with regards to xenophobia.

Tickets cost R30 for adults.

Older children may enjoy Woza Albert which will be at Gugu S’Thebe at 14:00 on Monday 3 and Thursday 6 October. The production, which is also free for children under 12 but R30 for adults, is a classic South African theatre piece which asks what would happen if Christ came back to 1980s apartheid South Africa.

tourism company is hoping to change township tours tourism for the better not just for the visitors but for locals.

The Stevie Wonder Tours operated by the married couple Steven and Kathleen van Hoof has begun a drive to raise funds for local educare centres in Gugulethu townships.

The couple organise walk around tours in the informal settlements of Gugulethu Barcelona and Kanana to give tourists a different kind of tour.

They say that drive through tours wouldn’t be enough as tourists would not connect to the good and the bad in these communities.

“What are trying to achieve to things: tours which are personal where visitors can

walk in and connect with locals as well as make sure that these tours also benefits locals. So we have started a campaign where tourist don’t just pay for the tours but also donate money towards the development of local crèches,” said Van Hoof.

Van Hoof said that are hoping to have an impact in the society with their new campaign despite it’s their target market being Dutch and Belgian residents.

“What impact does having tourist drive by the townships and being told about the culture and history but there is nothing that they can to address negative situation so we have partnered with local centres businesses and a local guide to help make this possible,” he said.

Local guide Nceba said that it was about time that township tours actually benefit the townships. .

Nyanga police are seeking public assistance in the solving the following murder cases.

On Saturday, 24 September 2016, a 16-yearold Azola Tika was allegedly several times at Gqoloma Street in Old Crossroads, said spokesperson Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

The victim was identified but the suspects are unknown. A second incident occurred at about 23:45 in Crossroads where a 28-yearold man was killed.

“He was allegedly shot while sitting in a vehicle waiting for his friend who was inside Tshisanyama Tavern in Old Crossroads.

The friend heard two gunshots and ran out-

side then he saw an unknown man who fired four more shots at the deceased. The victim died in hospital,” she said.

The third incident occurred on Sunday as well at about 03:10 in Sweet Home Farms.

“Here a 21-year-old victim was allegedly stabbed by a suspect called Anga Maqhaso,” said Sitshitshi.

She said that them is wanted and is on the run. “We appeal to the community members to continue to assist sharing information with the police to ensure these suspects are brought to book. Information can also be shared anonymously,” Anyone who might have info that may lead to the arrests must call 0860010111.

AmaWesile honour crime victim NOMONDE NIKANI

E

nthusiasm was the order of the day as the Cape of Good Hope District’s Young Women’s Manyano held a special event in Delft to launch the Elihle Fund and Support Project.

An initiative of the YWM, which seeks to respond to the social woes in our communities by providing moral and emotional support to the victims and survivors of abuse, both women and children.

The fund aims to provide a financial and an enabling reservoir for the project to assist victims of abuse and violence.

It will also help support victims to develop self-esteem and make informed decisions in the face of severe societal pressures.

The project has been named after the memory of Elihle Hlanjwa, a nine year old girl who was raped and burnt in January 2014.

Two months later she died of her injuries in Red Cross Children’s hospital.

The first part of the event was the unveiling of Elihle’s tombstone, courtesy of the YWM. Cape of Good Hope District Vice Bishop Reverend Yvette Moses, ably assisted by Reverend Vukile Mehana.

Moses said “Although it was a sad day when Elihle died, today we are celebrating her legacy, because she will never be forgotten.”

Mehana stated that a project like this

should not be confined to the boundaries of the Western Cape, but should be made known to the whole congregation of the Methodist Church, so it can garner more popularity.

“There must be a collaboration effort between the Young Women Manyano and Young Men’s Guild (YMG).”

Mehana pledged to making a difference in other people’s lives.

Thini Ngonyama, the General Treasurer, who was also a keynote speaker, recalled the day in January 2014 when she heard the news of Elihle’s tragedy and how it brought the church together.

She said that she felt honoured to be part of the event with its vital theme of: “Defeat through Grace”.

Ngonyama said she viewed Elihle as a girl who triumphed over tragedy because others will receive help and hope in her memory.

“Young women needed to make this initiative known, not only at the District level, but connexionally.”

She also made a pledge to continue to support the project.

When reverend Moses and lay leader mama Woji officially launched the project and fund, they challenged the young women to keep their values and be kind to others and announced that the District hierarchy fully support the project.

Grandmothers Against Poverty and Abuse ((GAPA), who are also partners in the projet, donated groceries towards the

On the eve of half a century, UCCSA to host special service The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) will hold its 49th anniversary celebration on Sunday, October 2.

Sunday services will be held at different churches which have been selected to enable members to access a church closest to them on this day.

The UCCSA was founded on the 3rd October 1967 and since then, this day has become known as “Congregational Day”.

In cases where this day falls in a week, the first Sunday will be chosen to hold “Congregational Day” services.

Methodist guilders lead by example MANDLA MAHASHE Doing good must not start and stop when Christians go to church but must extend to helping the community.

This was the message of the Milton Matiwane Society Wesley Guild, a youth movement of the False Bay Circuit under the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, when they delivered furniture to a destitute family in Makhaza.

According to Lundi Gobane, the guild’s convener, this was part of their efforts to better the lives of people living in their communities.

He said that they had felt the need to help the Bhobi family whose RDP home was not complete, last year.

“We engaged local businesses and asked for donations to finish the construction of the house.

Luckily a construction company came forth and continued with the building...we decided to assist with the furniture and appliances,” he told City Vision.

Gobane said that such initiatives were in line with the group’s main objectives for community developments.

“One of the movement’s main objectives is to create a healthy, positive relationship with other young people in all spheres of life; to reach out to them, embrace them, touch their lives and bring them into a loving relationship with the Lord,” said

He said that it was part of the duties to go around their neighbourhood to check where assistance was needed and that this was part of their commitment.

Abdullah in four solo gigs F

ollowing a sold out performance at the Fugard Theatre earlier this year, Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre present four solo piano concerts by global music icon and South African legend Abdullah Ibrahim. The concerts will take place from 20 to 22 October at 8pm and on Sunday 23 October at 4pm.

Hot on the heels of his much lauded appearance at the thirtieth annual Oslo Jazz Festival in Norway, these will be Mr. Ibrahim’s only other solo piano concerts in Cape Town in 2016. The special performances will be a brand new presentation of new and older compositions spanning nearly seventy years of a remarkable career, which all began in Kensington and District Six at the age of seven.

Abdullah Ibrahim is South Africa’s most distinguished pianist and a world-respected master musician. Following his performance at the Oslo Jazz Festival, John Ephland, writing on allaboutjazz.com, described his performance as a ‘once-in-a-lifetime event’ and commented that his performance has: ‘…a certain signature soulfulness that can only come from living life rich and full. Full of feeling, rich in experience (patience). And yes, a solo piano recital may seem simple but to this listener it once again revealed how exposed a true artist makes himself when heart, gut and soul combine with a voice unlike any other in the jazz piano tradition’.

Songbird caught up in a shooting Legendary South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka was nearly caught in the crossfire during a police shoot-out in Midrand on Tuesday.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed the incident happened at approximately 14:30 in Centurion.

“Three suspects who had hijacked a Mercedes Benz panel van in Centurion were involved in a shoot-out with police who had been chasing them. Two suspects were shot, one died at the scene and another was wounded and airlifted to the hospital under police guard.

“A third suspect managed to escape. During a shootout, the suspects tried to hijack a Mercedes Benz (sedan). Two firearms, a pistol and R4 rifle were found at the scene.

Police officers were not injured. Only a vehicle was damaged on the side window,” Dlamini said.

Arts galore in Langa and ‘Litsha The Cape Town Fringe Festival is in full swing at the moment, with a stellar line-up of productions for younger audiences on offer at the Makukhanye Arts Room in Khayelitsha and Langa’s Theatre in the Backyard and Guga S’Thebe.

Very little audiences can look forward to a free performance of Le Reve du Lucie at Gugu S’Thebe at 12:00 on Wednesday 5 October (the show is free for children under 12 and adults pay R30). This production makes use of puppets to tell a story about childhood nightmares and how to change them into marvellous dreams.

Children under the age of 12 can also look forward to Falling Off the Horn at Gugu S’Thebe from 12:00 on Saturday (1 October), where mime, masks, dance and shadow-pup-

petry are combined to tell the story of a young man’s flight to South Africa and the extraordinary struggles he must face on arrival with regards to xenophobia. Tickets cost R30 for adults.

Older children may enjoy Woza Albert which will be at Gugu S’Thebe at 14:00 on Monday 3 and Thursday 6 October. The production, which is also free for children under 12 but R30 for adults, is a classic South African theatre piece which asks what would happen if Christ came back to 1980s apartheid South Africa.

The Fall is about student uprising A

s student protests continue to rock the country, The Fall, a brand new production, which will be staged at the Baxter this October, is based on the experiences of seven recent graduates, who took part in #RhodesMustFall and subsequent student movements.

The Fall which will be at the Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio from Thursday 6 to Saturday 29 October, is a frank, collaborative piece of workshop theatre devised by the cast, facilitated by Clare Stopford, and directed by Ameera Conrad and Thando Mangcu, two members of the ensemble.

The dynamic cast includes Conrad (Don’t Shoot the Harbinger, People Beneath Our Feet); Oarabile Ditsele (Woza Albert, Identirrhaging); Tankiso Mamabolo (Nothing But the Truth, Fabulous Nothing); Mangcu (Don’t Shoot the Harbinger, The Shipment); Sizwesandile Mnisi (Woza Albert, Connection to Home); Sihle Mnqwazana (My Children! My Africa!, Identirrhaging) and Cleo Raatus (Black Dog/Inj’emnyama, District Six Kanala).

Given the current climate at tertiary institutions throughout South Africa, this production could not be more relevant, focusing on and highlighting burning issues that beg to be addressed.

The vital new play adds its voice to the national and worldwide debate and youth-led revolutions against injustices, inequality in education, cultural representation and many other contemporary conflicts. The mass student movement (and the ones that followed throughout the year all over the country) provoked worldwide discourse and action.

Social categorisations such as race, class and gender, as well as the ideologies of patriarchy and sexism - all issues at the core of global conversations and tragedies perva-

sive in today’s societies - are tackled headon, as The Fall seeks to unpack discrimination in all its forms.

The production is based on the cast’s personal journeys as people of colour (POC) during the #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall demonstrations in 2015, during their final year as students at the University of Cape Town.

These movements, the inspiration for this production, served as a major clarion call to a great number of people of colour at UCT as well as other tertiary institutions all over the country.

The campaign for the statue’s removal led to a wider movement to decolonise education across South Africa garnering global attention.

The Fall hones in on the cast’s individual challenges in the movement as well as those created by the overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination.

It provides a point of reference in terms of what motivated students to act and why they found the Rhodes statue offensive.

The play hopes to bridge the generational gap between the current generation’s outlook, attitudes and motivations and the older generations’ perspective on topical issues such colonisation, sexuality and racial discrimination.

The play also looks back on what gains were made and what developments have evolved as a result of the students’ demonstrations.

The Fall previews at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from Thursday 6 to Monday 10 October, opens Tuesday 11 October and runs until Saturday 29 October at 19:30 with Saturday matinees at 14:30.

There is an age restriction of 16 years. Tickets cost R130 Monday to Thursday and R150 Friday to Saturday, with R50 discount for students. Tickets are available at Computicket.

Fringe festival should be part of your week The city will be alive with the sound of music, amongst other sounds, with the return of the Cape Town Fringe Festival from Thursday until Saturday 8 October.

Capetonians can also look forward to the new Buskers Festival which takes place at the V&A Waterfront from Thursday 6 until Saturday 8 October.

The programme leans into the school holidays and runs over three weekends with a host of daytime and early evening shows for younger audiences.

Guest Artistic Director of the Cape Town Fringe, Rob Murray says: “It is well-documented that theatre inspires

empathy in children and young adults and we encourage parents to look beyond the predictability of screens to ignite the world of theatre.”

In partnership with the City of Cape Town, the Fringe will also be taking shows to schools across the Peninsula.

The Cape Town Fringe’s City Hall hub includes a Fringe Club where Festival goers can pass some time enjoy eats and drinks from the pop-up stalls and possibly even see a spontaneous live performance.

Reggae festival at the castle For the past two decades, All Nations has been promoting local and international reggae music and artists in South Africa and this November they’ll be bringing five international reggae artists to Cape Town for the All Nations Reggae Fest 2016.

The festival takes place at the Castle of Good Hope on Saturday 12 November and will include performances by Jamaicans Bushman, Etana and Turbulence, Souljah Luv from Zimbabwe and Lucius Banda from Malawi.

All five international artists will be backed by the all African, seven-piece All Nations Band.

For their Cape Town show they’ll be joined

by The Rudimentals, Blak Kalamawi, Yagga Flames, Bashmouth Sound, Triple Crown and Ras Reggie.

Foslara conjures up a flowery win A

midst a flurry of glittering fireworks and cries of jubilation, two of Cape Town’s most beguiling teens, Jamian Fortune and Vuyolwethu Foslara, were crowned the 2016 Western Cape Junior Magician Champions in Milnerton High recently.

Hosted by the College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, the championships were a thriller of sorts.

In contention were 11 of the province’s most talented teen wizards, but there could only be two winners.

Eventually, Jamian,19, from Bishop Lavis took top honours in the Close-Up magic category, while Vuyolwethu,18, from Khayelitsha snagged the Stage magic title.

Jamian held spectators in thrall with his comedic repartee and blink-and-you-miss-it sleights and card effects while Vuyolwethu paired his love of watching flowers grow with a passion for grand illusions in a fascinating florist magic act.

The charming duo’s imaginative acts and hard work paid off, captivating the attention and approval of celebrity judges and star graduates of the College of Magic: Francis Chouler, Marcel Pretorius, Stuart Taylor and Sithembele Tyutula.

Jamian, a burgeoning tech whizz and first time Championships competitor, is thrilled with his achievement: “This is just unbelievable. I always enjoy the reactions my performance gets from audiences but to be recognised for it by such a prestigious panel of judges is a real honour.”

Vuyolwethu, an accomplished performer who has previously competed in the 2014 edition of the Championships, adds: “Winning the Stage Magician Championship title is a dream come true for me and proof that with magic, anything is possible.

I look forward to sharing my winning act

with the world.”

The terrific twosome, who can now proudly lay claim to the prestigious Championships titles as well opportunities to perform at international magical events, accepted their awards, alongside runners-up Xolile Dyani (19), from Khayelitsha, in the CloseUp Championships and Caitlin Hutchison (15), from Claremont, in the Stage Championships.

Further awards presented were the Supreme Trophy for Up-and-Coming Junior Magician which went to Sonwabile Mekuto(19), from Delft and the people’s choice Street Magician of the Year title was won by Siyamthanda Mzangwa (21), from Khayelitsha.

In addition to the thrilling contests, audiences were treated to a special musical guest performance led on the keyboard by Olwethu Dyantyi, the 2015 South African Magic and Grand Prix Magic Champion.

Dyantyi, a College of Magic alumnus who has dazzled audiences in theatres in Las Vegas, Italy and China, is currently the star of Coca-Cola’s One Brand “Taste the Magic” ad.

Celebrating 36 years of teaching the art of magic and its allied arts as well as vital lifeskills to children and adults in 2016, the College of Magic is a non-profit organisation and the only one of its kind in the world.

The College has been hosting the Championships for more than 30 years.

Vuthela blowing up a storm at the Artscape

heatre Arts Admin Collective is presenting the raw, visceral and deeply honest play Ubuze Bam at the City Hall as part of the Cape Town Fringe Festival.

The production tells the stories of four young men who are ex-offenders.

The title Ubuze Bam literally means “my nakedness”, which is very apt considering Bongani Dyalivana, Eric Menyo, Lazola Sikhutshwa and Ntsika Tyalana take the audience on a journey that is emotional and vulnerable as they lay bare different prison experiences.

The project was originally developed in consultation with the Young in Prison (YIP) entrepreneurship programme. It was an intense five week creative and rehearsal process for the post-release programme participants and resulted in a performance that is being shared with the wider community and has become a production that has launched

“Vuthela” means “to blow” in IsiXhosa, and there will be a lot of that going on at Artscape Theatre on Saturday, when the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble take to the stage with other groups for VuthelaBlowing up a storm!.

Previously known as the Brass Band Extravaganza, Vuthela-Blowing up a storm! is presented under the direction of Marc de Kock, with a mandate to promote musical literacy and social harmony within the Western Cape.

This production will showcase commitment of local students to musical literacy, while promoting the development of young musicians in the field of brass and wood winds.

The Youth Wind Ensemble will be joined

by New Faces of Africa, The Artscape Big Band and Elsies River High School Band.

Conductor Faan Malan will direct the hand-picked musicians who make up the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble who provide a platform for young artists to display their extraordinary talents.

The band will also feature two young vocalists from Elsies River, namely Craig Jor-

Director Thando Doni used a very organic approach as he worked with the young men.

He asked questions like: “Who are you?” and “What does your name mean?” to elicit words that became sentences that became a poem. This would lead to movement and the creation of a scene.

These men may not have theatre skills but they have experiences. Through the telling of these painful but real stories audiences are allowed into the inner world of people who are often dismissed by society. Their humanity is reclaimed as these men are healing through the power of performance and theatre.

New artists invited to enter sculpting race Unestablished artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2016/17.

Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland cement-based concrete as a primary base or material.

The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields. These disciplines are sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial and fashion design.

Prize money to the value of half a million rand, where each category winner stands a chance to win R50 000, while runners-up receive R15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2017.

New Face of Africa is a 15-piece community jazz band under the direction of Gcinikhaya Mnyamana. Their repertoire includes jazz standards like “St Thomas” by Sonny Rollins and “Y’al inkhomo” written by the legend Winston Mankunku.

The Artscape Big Band consists of up and coming young jazz musicians from all over the Western Cape, including participants from Elsies River and Rondebosch Boys High Schools and UCT. Rounding off this line-up is the Elsies River High School Band, directed by wellknown musician Donveno Prins.

This band previously performed with CPYWE and has come into its own as a force to be reckoned with. They also played at the International Jazz Festival earlier this year.

Gugs marathon numbers rise ZILA MKONTO

he Orange Crowd as the RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club is fondly known is hellbent on making its presence felt in many races across the Peninsula and beyond.

This is evidenced by the number of athletes it dispatched in the last Comrades Marathon in Pietermaritzburg.

Proud club chairman Thobile Ndzube told City Vision Sport that this year they had more than 50 runners taking part in one of the ardous road races on offer internationally.

“We are very proud that our runners are keen to test their capabilities by even trying the Comrades Marathon,” said Ndzube.

He said by so doing the “runners were teaching others that nothing is impossible when the mind settles around it”.

Meanwhile the Comrades Marathon Association general manager Chris Fisher unveiled the 2017 Comrades Marathon campaign in Jozi last week, saying:

It boasts the biggest prize package in South Africa with over R2 million in prizes to be won. The pageant is now open to all South African women between the ages of 1825, but entries must be received by the 5th of October 2016.

On the 5th of November, the Miss Mamelodi Sundowns team will be in Cape Town, Western Cape–the seventh stop on their nine province road trip.

In each province, the team will judge the semi-finalists and select two contestants per province, who will each win R60 000 and go on to compete in the national final which takes place in December.

These 18 provincial semi-finalists will have an equal opportunity to win the coveted Miss Mamelodi Sundowns 2016 title, which also comes with prize money of R200 000 and a brand-new car. The 1st Princess will receive R175 000, with R150 000 going to the 2nd Princess.

A young and talented runner was left devastated when thugs robbed her on Sunday morning making way with her hard won Comrades Marathon medal.

Phiwo Bango was on her way to NY 49 Stadium to attend a club photo shoot when the thugs cornered her in Delft where she stays.

“Three men accosted me and overpowered me before running away with my tog bag which had my Comrades Marathon medal, the t-shirt and other things,” said Phiwe who was amongst a large contingent of RCS Gugulethu AC that took part in the marathon in June.

Concerned club members consoled Phiwe when they heard about her plight.

Pumeza Bobotyana said runners were daily being targeted by criminals. “ I give God praise for sparing your life Phiwe. Everything else can be worked for.

Ta Mbo and I survived two attempted robberies at gun point while we just training.

I thank God for many chances in life,” said Pumeza.

City Vision contacted the Comrades Marathon Association offices this week in an attempt to have Phiwe’s precious medal and t-shirt re-issued.

The office has confirmed the receipt of our request and promised to respond soon.

Young wannabes impress It didn’t take long for the 100 aspiring footballers to impress coaches in the Vodacom NXT LVL Boot Camp underway at the University of Pretoria High Performance Centre this week.

On Monday the players underwent shadow tests before going to the field for the coaches to monitor their basic skills.

The young girls and boys, between the ages of 14-16, were selected from 1000 hopefuls across the country who uploaded videos of themselves on the Vodacom NXT LVL website.

Those who made the cut were split into two groups of 50, under the watchful eyes of Lucas Radebe, Cyril Nzama and Simphiwe Dludlu while the second group was coached by Portia Modise, Mark Fish and Edward Motale.

Radebe said: “It was a successful first day. We’ve managed to look at the talent that we have. We have already identified some players with potential that we can work on. We want to see, those who impressed us, if they can keep it up.

They are learning more than just what’s needed on the field of play, like when I say that they must be on the pitch

at 13h30, I don’t mean that they should be arriving. I mean that they should be ready to start. Those are some of the things that they are learning because they haven’t been in a stage where they have been coached properly. That’s why we are here. We want them to feel how it’s like to be coached by professionals, doing the right things in a good environment where they can enjoy themselves as well.”

There is plenty of motivation for them to impress. The group will be trimmed from 100 to 32 on Wednesday. The 32 who will stay behind will be grouped into two groups of 16 to play an exhibition match against each other on Sunday at 3pm at Tuks Stadium. The winning 16 will each get a full bursary at Tuks Sport High where they will complete their education.

The 16 on the losing team will each get R50 000 paid towards their education which will be monitored by the Vodacom Foundation.

f the recent showing by young soccer players who took part in the Mgebe/ KSC Cup is anything to go by, the nation can rest assured in the knowledge that it has talent galore.”

This sentiment was shared by Khayelitsha Sports Council (KSC) deputy president Nceba Zondani, who expressed this notion at the completion of a schools soccer tournament sponsored by Mgebe Securities.

“We saw a lot of talented boys and I hope that one day we will see them wearing colours of top teams in the country,” said Zondani.

Bobby Mgebe, representing the sponsor, was also very impressed with the quality of football dished by the young boys.

“They are young you can see some of them will becom stars when they grow up,” he said.

Mgebe said it was important that companies owned by Blacks started supporting sports in the townships and schools.

“By supporting events like these you are nipping crime in the bud,” he said.

Isikhokelo Primary School was crowned champions after beating Encotsheni Primary in a nailbiting game 4-3.

The games were hailed as a major success and Mgebe Securities committed themselves in sponsoring the event again.
