he war against drugs and substance abuse received a boost when police destroyed a dagga plantation in Marcus Garvey settlement, in Phillipi over the weekend.

Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi said the the discovery of a R 1.7 million dagga plant in Philippi shows that police are “taking tough stance against drugs”.

“We arrested of five people including a female after one of our member recieved a tip off regarding the illegal cultivation of dagga in the area,” she said, Sitshitshi said police attached to the Trio Crimes and Gangs unit conducted an operation at Marcus Garvey after receiving a tip off from the community of illegal cultivation of dagga in that area.

Five suspects, four males and a female ages between 26 and 43 were arrested.

On the same day a 32 year old man was arrested for theft of copper cables.

“The suspect was found with copper cables valued at R 20 000 in his possession,” said Sitshitshi.

She also added that the Nyanga Police precinct has arrested mopre than 120 suspects in the last week.

“In the past week arrested one hundred and twenty-six suspects.

The suspects were apprehended during shebeen operations, searches at drug houses, vehicle control points, stop and searches.

These crimes were committed in the six sectors of the cluster,” said Sitshitshi.

She said that some of the arrests made were of crimes committed in other areas and suspects found in the precinct.

“Fifty-two suspects were apprehended for dealing and being in possession of drugs , thirteen for dealing in liquor, seven for dangerous weapons, ten for possession of stolen vehicles,six for car hijackings, attempted murder and possession of ammunition, six for stolen property, eight for crimes against women and children as well as possession of ammunition.

Some suspects were apprehended for other various crimes ranging from assault and drunken driving,” she said.

‘Tsotsi’ Bishop nabbed for fraud A

group of disgruntled congregants sighed with relief as the leader of their church was sent back to Pollsmoor Prison to allow for further investigation into fraud charges laid against her.

The case will reconvene on January 25 at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court.

Waving placards bearing the name of the accused, the members detailed how their church leader “fleeced them of hard earned cash”.

Hloni Tyali is one of those who claim that the accused bishop “conned” her out of R80 000.

“I sold my house in Mfuleni and told her I was looking to buy another one. She immediately told me she that knew of a couple that were relocating overseas,” she alleged.

Tyali said she trusted the bishop and never doubted she would harm her.

“She wanted to be a middle man between me and the seller because she said they would sell it cheaper to her. I deposited the money into her account and after she said

the seller asked for a three months period to move out in October, I saw no problem with that,” she added.

When that period lapsed Tyali went to the bishop and was allegedly told to wait for another week.

“Just before the week ended she phoned saying she had a family funeral in the Eastern Cape and that was the last time I heard from her,” Tyali said.

Tyali said she was shocked when she heard her bishop was arrested on November 24 on matters relating to fraud.

“I was in tears because I knew my money had gone,” she said.

The bishop was arrested for defrauding a couple she had promised to “rent them one of her flats in Plattekloof”.

“We met at Khayelitsha Maintennance office and she promised to help find a flat and we paid an upfront deposit of R8 000. When the time to occupy the flat came it was apparent we were duped and I opened a case against her,” Siphuxolo Mwanda said.

Lihle rescues pigeons from fire MODISE TAU Lihle Myeni just could not take the thought of losing his three pigeons to hear.

As hungry flames fuelled by strong winds devoured shack after shack in Langa, many residents watched helplessly as their belongings went up in smoke.

During the chaos, however, brave Lihle,9, was running helter skelter too, and at the top of his mind was not the clothing and furniture– but the lives of his three feathered friend, Blacky, Whitey and Sparrow!

The three pigeons were trapped in a cage and he feared the fire would roast them alive.

Luckily for them, Lihle made it just in time, and his pigeons are safely back in his arms.

Lihle, from Langa , told City Vision he’d do anything to save them.

“They’re my friends. I don’t want anything bad to happen to them. When I heard that there was a fire in the block, the only thing I could think of was my pigeons,” he said.

“I lock them up in a cage that stands on top of the house and I knew if I didn’t come to get them they wouldn’t be able to get out and they would die,” said the boy.

“I got my pigeons about a year ago from a white lady and I’ve been taking care of them since then. I would like to get more because I love them.”

He said he heard they chase away bad spirits.

“That makes me love them even more.”

A neighbour, Nozibele Mazisana,47, said: “Lihle doesn’t want to hear anything bad about his pigeons, he likes them too much.

Once when he couldn’t find one of them in the cage he cried. He was going around asking people to help him find his pigeon. “I like what he’s doing because it keeps him busy,” said Nozibele. The fire destroyed 85 shacks and left 153 persons displaced. No injuries were reported.

Free education might be the water we need Is it me, or do you also have a feeling that 2016 is going to be one of a kind?

Or Annus Horribilis-as Queen Elizabeth of Britain once remarked some moons ago, on account of the shenanigans taking place in the royal palace ala- Princess Diana(may her soul rest in peace) and Prince Charles-depending on our water levels.

Even as it is in its infancy, there’s just something about this year that I think will make it all the more interesting.

For, no sooner had we set off the firecrackers just past midnight on December 31st, than we had to start thinking about the challenges that lay ahead.

Take the contentious issue of #feesmustfall. Students seem to have started from where they left off last year with the protests, tweets and retweets. For them a 0% increase is not enough. Free education!.

Just the other day, I was deep in thoughts about the spin-offs that a free education could bring to the Black child and/community.

It dawned on me that everyone, from plumber Jwarha to carpenter Sipho, would grab the opportunity with both hands. Even the laggers would fine good reason to go back to school.

For, nothing can quite compare to felefele education. Tata Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

In the midst of it all, I was reminded of this lanky fellow-albeit a bit older- who frequents the same phuza joint as yours truly. I have known him for quite a number of years now.

He is one character who never misses the opportunity to let anyone who cares to listen know that he is an erudite person.

He somehow lightens up whenever he comes upon the sight of me and puts on his best English accent, even calling me ‘Lunga Eirams’. I always know that, soon as he sees me, he will bellow: “Lunga Eirams, come here.

There’s something I wanna ask you. I know you know the answer to this because me and you, we are scholars.”

This he does, more than anything else, to impress other carousers, who are often left agog with his parlance and charisma.

So, imagine then, how Kasi drinking holes would resemble a library, were free education to be introduced.

Interactions around the table would seem like an indaba of sorts, with folks trying to outdo each other as walking encyclopaedias. Hardened alcoholics and those previously on the margins of despair would dust their matric certificates off and register at varsity. Everyone everywhere would be a ‘scholar’, to quote my old pal.

Finally, some fellas would be genuinely ‘educated’, rather than claiming to be when they are not. Many a time I have had to shake my head in disbelief when a guy tells me he had been to the University of Cape Town. You ask which campus and they say ‘the one in Durban’. Hehe. Thixo wase Bush!

This also promises to be the year of a dry spell, what with the kid el nino rearing his ugly head. Did you hear the one about Eastern Cape farmer Krisjan Kruger committing suicide last December because of the drought.

There had been no rain for a prolonged spell and he could not bear the thought of his beloved farm in ruins. What a pity, because according to residents quoted in a media report, rain fell in the area the following day.

The water situation is a dire one and, if you don’t believe me, look no further than the water restrictions being imposed by the City of Cape Town.

A drought might well be looming in the horizon in these parts – don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Be water wise and rather drink beer. Just like this lowly newspaperman. Or kanjani? Annus Mirabilis!

Gugs meet to plot development MANDLA MAHASHE

dialogue among local leaders in Gugulethu is set to create a platform where concerned residents can voice their frustrations and plot a way forward.

The meeting which was hosted by Dr Spiwo Xapile of the JL Zwane Community Centre took place last Friday.

Community leaders, residents, religious leaders as well NGOs attended the meeting and the number of attendees was more than that expected.

Xapile noted that they were happy to see that many non-governmental organisations had come to the fore and wanted to be part of the solution and even gave a word of advice.

“However what is important is that people who run non-governmental organisations should make sure that their organisations are up and running.

Sometimes you find an NGO whose ideas you love only to find out that they are not a registered entity,” said Xapile.

Xapile said that she was happy about the turnout and noted that this was proof that there was an interest in the future of Gugulethu.

“We have been engaging leaders since last year and they have been very excited about this process and this is beginning of the process,” said Xapile.

Gugulethu Development Forum’s Samora Nompunga said that what was interesting about the dialogue was that it would help pave the way forward.

“We have found that structures in Gu-

Man smashes head of a toddler against wall Police are searching for a 32-year-old Phillipi man who allegedly flung his girlfriend’s seven-month-old baby against a wall and the ceiling, killing the girl.

Andisiwe Mnandi told the Cape Argus on Tuesday that she woke up to give her child her morning feed, when an argument broke out with her boyfriend.

The man then proceeded to beat her sev-

en-month-old daughter, Inganathi, before flinging her body against the ceiling, walls, and prepaid electricity meter.

He then jumped on her body, despite attempts from Andisiwe’s seven-year-old sister to protect the baby.

Afterwards he ran away, leaving the toddler to die.

The mother’s family said the argument in-

volved a phone call from another woman.

According to information, the boyfriend shared an older child with Mnandi.

He had spent two years in Pollsmoor Prison for shoplifting, and was released on parole last week.

Police said a case of murder was being investigated, and hat the man was on the run.

The Brothers For All Coding Centre in Langa keeps youth and prisoners buys by teaching them computer based techniques and make them ready for employment.

kills training opportunities have sprung up for the youth of Langa, thanks to the work of Brothers For All. Founded by ex-prisoner Sihle Tshabalala, he excitedly told City Vision that this year they will be offering accredited training courses in computer coding.

“We are very happy to have formed partnerships with Forefront Systems, Nona Creative and Woolworths. These companies are offering paid internships opportunities to our top students,” he said.

Tshabalala said they were now recruiting those who want to “take up these opportunities”.

“This is game changing adventure and we are looking for dreamers between the ages of 18-35 years. They can have matric or not but must be unemployed,” he said.

The courses are free and the duration is anything between six months to a year.

Those who are selected will study Computer Programming/Coding where they learn to build websites and mobile applications.

While the Brothers for All coding programme was initiated in 2014, they have

been operating in the non-profit sphere under the parent charity, Mothers for All, in both Botswana and South Africa since 2008 and have managed project grants from the EU, the World Bank, Barclays Bank UK, DG Murray Trust, the MAC AIDS Fund and Hivos.

“Brothers for All is helping to break the poverty-cum-crime cycle that characterises our impoverished settlements by providing offenders, ex-offenders and vulnerable youth with aspirational technology skills,” he said.

Tshabalala said they do this by teaching people how to code, using online training platforms, supported by video tutorials and skilled mentors.

The Brothers for All coding centre in Langa started in August 2014 with 10 donated laptops, a mobile internet connection and a handful of students. By the time Lord Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, officially opened the centre in October 2014 they had over 30 students, that number grew so quickly to a total of 200.

Today they attract “keen learners” and

unemployed youths from as far as Gugulethu, Nyanga and Khayelitsha.

These learners often include school leavers with good matric results but who lack financial support to further their vocational training, school leavers with poor matric results, school drop-outs, teenage mothers and ex-offenders. “ There are no entry requirements - only the commitment to work hard.

The duration between training to employability takes between 6-12 months depending on the student’s ability and commitment.

We have opened another coding centre in Hout Bay for 20 students from Imizamo Yethu in September 2015,” he enthused.

So far, sixteen of their students have won scholarships to CodeX, an elite training academy and three have been offered internships with Nona Creative and ForeFront Development Systems. “ We have been approached by several other technology companies and corporates who are willing to support our work by offering either internships or jobs to our graduates,” he said.

The organisation been granted permission to run a coding project in all 42 of the Western Cape’s prisons.

They had started their first project in the Worcester Correctional Centre, teaching 15 offenders, who have been drawn from both the male and female prisons.

“We also have another programme for juvenile offenders at Drakenstein Correctional Centre,” he added.

Tshabalala said by equipping offenders with high-demand coding skills they will have a greater chance of getting a job or being able to start their own business, thereby reducing their risk of re-offending.

“This is a world first with ex-offenders coming back to prison to teach offenders how to code,” he said.

ugulethu’s DJ Kaunda is determined to use his partying ways for a greater good.

Kaunda Mapipa is a decks man who has started an initiative called Gone Rogue where he hosts parties to raise funds for the less fortunate.

“I started the initiative with the idea of using it to assist those who are needy and I chose to buy school uniforms for learners.

I want this to be motivation for them to stay in school and know that without school you limit your chances of success,” he said.

Last year, he kicked off with a party at the Sky Lounge in Gugs, to prove his point.

He helped raise about R5000.00 for school uniforms.

“No child should ever feel less equal to others as a result of financial want. This is why this has to be an ongoing project to make sure that we reach as many children as we can,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda is continuing with the project with the second instalment of the Gone Rogue parties taking place on 30 January at the Sky Lounge again.

Still a chance for students South African students have until Sunday 14 February to apply for the Red Bull Can You Make It? Competition.

The competition is open to university student with an up-for-anything attitude and a sense of daring, but it’s also more about the journey than the destination as participants cover 1000 kilometres in a week, using nothing but Red Bull can as currency.

On April 12, the 165 selected teams will depart from one of the five Starting Points in Europe – Barcelona, Florence, Berlin,

Edinburgh or Prague.

Besides exchanging cans of Red Bull for everything from food and accommodation to transport, teams will also visit checkpoints where they’ll be tasked with body and mind challenges, completing as many tasks on their adventure list as they can. Students must gather three university friends, create a one minute video explaining why they should be chosen and upload to www.redbullcanyoumakeit.com before Sunday 14 February to apply.

Young hiphopsters doing it in Xhosa MBONGISENI MASEKO A duo trying to preserve Xhosa language, norms and traditional customs through the word of art is determined to succeed in their dream.

Silindokuhle “Slie” Baka and Sandisile “Skillz” Ntleki of Xhosatribe hip hop are on a mission of promoting IsiXhosa using entertainment.

They have since released an extended play (EP) which consists of five songs, last year.

They recorded their EP titled ‘Amahlakani akomkhulu/The kingdom servants’ at Redbull studios.

Baka said their “unique music” was warmly welcomed by their fans.

“We are inspired by the love of our culture. We want our language to live-on even if we are no longer in this world. Our music

is unique. We do not want to be ordinary.

Our fans love our music, they buy it and they come to our shows all over the city,” he said.

They started the group in 2012 after they meet during the hip hop competition called Gem Bat Session held in Cape Town, last year.

Baka won the competition which saw Ntleki approaching him to form the group.

They both originated from the Eastern Cape.

Baka is doing his final year in Financial Accounting at College of Cape Town.

Ntleki is working at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Cape Town campus. Their music is also making waves in community radio stations in the province and in the Eastern Cape.

Blacks vote for the DA at their own peril

For a greater part of its existence in the post democratic era, the Democratic Alliance has invested its time and resource to prove to a majority of South Africans that it’s not a whites’ only party and explicitly that it is not a racist party.

This of course being their electioneering strategy and an effort to counter the perception that the DA is not only racist but will bring back the apartheid system, should it govern this country.

That has presented the DA with a lot of inner-party challenges and has given direction to its internal politics.

Challenges facing the DA are permanent and are a consequence of the contradiction between sticking to its pro-White orientation and loosing votes from a black population that dominates the South Africa landscape.

What presents the contradiction is the fact that black people are a majority without which the DA will never live its dream of governing this country and its traditional membership is racist and refuses to see black people as an integral part of society.

If the above is not accepted, how else can it be explained that racist white South Africans are finding the DA as a political home?

Unlike the ANC whose challenges are because of individuals choosing to ignore

whites only.

In the process of fighting racism and isolating racists, the society must also isolate the DA. Black people must reject the DA and its pro-white policies. There has been a concerted effort to convince people that race matters not when it comes to choosing which political party to affiliate and/or vote for.

This of course has been widely spread by political commentators and accepted by those it benefits in the political discourse. Contrary to that, it needs to be noted that a politically party voted for will ultimately govern a non-racial South Africa characterized by inequalities and such inequalities are a direct consequence of a deliberate and system-

or manipulate organisation policy due to their selfishness, the DA’s are as a result of its core members actually ignoring the electioneering propaganda and carrying out views derived from the organisation’s culture and policy.

The DA has had to deal with its members’ racial outbursts, with the most recent example being Kohler Barnard and Penny(Sparrow).

The party’s federal executive decided to expel Kohler Barnard for her racially divisive views and the party’s federal legal commission reversed the decision and withdrew her expulsion.

Even Mmusi Maimane was quoted as saying the decision of the federal legal commission cannot be interfered with, that shows that the highest decision making body of the DA does not reprimand racist views and that explains why racist like Penny find a political home in the DA. One of the basic sign of this country’s victory in dismantling Apartheid was ending segregation of beaches, benches and other places which were reserved for whites only.

Penny’s reference to Black people as monkeys simply because they have exercised their hard earned right to be at the beach should be taken as her wish that there be places that are reserved for

Therefore it is inconceivable that poor people would be encouraged to vote for a political party whose policy orientation is pro-rich, unless the only purpose of that exercise would be to maintain the interests of the rich.

A free education is our right They say education is free in South Africa but I don’t see it. They say education is the government’s priority but it doesn’t seem so.

Looking at the current situation at tertiary institutions, it clearly shows that free education is only on paper, and not in action.

Did they forget the words of Madiba that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world?

Did they forget that this country must produce innovators and job creators through education?

They have promised the poor black child free quality education. But this

promise has faded with time. The poor black child toils and sweats blood to obtain quality matric results to get out of poverty, but all his efforts are in vain.

The poor continue to be poor while the rich get richer. It is heartbreaking to see kids with excellent results being denied a university education just because there’s not enough money.

These children turn to crime because they feel hopeless about their future.

They end up in prison with their potential and ambition denied. Something must be done: free education in our lifetime must be put into action.

Weekend binges cause death The official death toll for the 2015-2016 festive season was 1 755, an increase of 14% from 2014’s 1 535.

The age group most affected for drivers as well as passengers and pedestrians is between 25 to 39.

What is more worrying is that most crashes occurred on weekends, hinting that many of those involved had been drunk. Also, more males than females are involved in road accidents.

The cost of accidents to our economy is estimated at R306 billion per year. The Road Accident Fund spends up to R1,5 billion a month covering victims.

Our people love media and this would go a long way to educate motorists about responsible driving.

We also need to review the Arrive Alive campaign as it is outdated and lacks innovation and creativity.

Government’s current strategy to reduce road deaths was a total failure.

Ozzie school helps Impendulo MBONGISENI MASEKO

T

he relationship between Impendulo Primary School, Khayelitsha, and their Australian counterparts is continuously bearing fruits.

The school once again received a donation of cricket kit from Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie), on Friday.

The old kit which the school has been using was donated by them in 2010 when the first visited the school.

Churchie also, among other things, improved the cricket field which was in a deplorable state.

The donation came at the right time as the young cricket stars had to wear worn-out kit.

Zuziwe Mputa, deputy principal at the school, applauded the donation.

“Thank you very much for this gesture.

Every time you come here you always have something for us. Keep-on supporting that school. This is a legacy that you are leaving in the school,” Mputa said.

Ian Greig, special projects for Churchie,

said they were touched to see learners wearing not so appealing kit when they last visited in 2014.

“The cricket team was wearing old and tired kit when we visited here. So we decided to raise money to buy the new one. We hope that you will enjoy using the new kit and that one day some of you will come and play cricket in Australia one day. The cleanliness in the school is wonderful,” Greig said.

The school produced five learners who were selected to represent the province in Bloemfontein, last year.

Two of the players have since graduated for high school and they are now with Newlands Cricket School.

The remaining players are Bukhobakhe Masupa, Under 12, Siviwe Nkonzombi, Under 12 and Nemigcobo Sijemlana who plays for Under 11 team.

Impendulo cricket coach Thulani Masuku said the donation was a life changing factor.

“Our kit was really old and we had very few balls. I am very happy that we now have a new kit. I will go a long way in helping us,” Masuku said.

Komphela fancies another win at Cape Town Stadium Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela targets another win when they face against Platinum Stars on Sunday afternoon.

Cricket development boosted

T

he grassroots development of cricket in township schools continues as the Gary Kirsten Foundation provided net facilities and cricket equipment, as well as a fully qualified coach, to Khayalitsha, Cape Town’s Siphamandla Secondary School.

“There is so much undiscovered talent in our country and we’re hoping that, through this initiative, we will be able to provide a healthy alternative for young people in the township communities,” explained former World Cup winning Cricket Coach Gary Kirsten.

He said that the need for sporting facilities in township schools is just so great that, unfortunately, the Gary Kirsten Foundation cannot meet the demands on it’s own.

“We always like to encourage others to join us in the roll out of more of these cricket ecosystems and net installations. Through the provision of nets, equipment and coaching opportunities we are absolutely amazed at the difference these cricket ecosystems make in these township areas in a very short space of time.”

The second recipient of the foundation’s Township Cricket Development Initiative, Siphamandla – one of the leading academic schools in the area - has more than 1 200 pupils, most of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds with limited, if any, access to sporting facilities.

“We only have one area for netball but otherwise there are no

fields for our learners to play,” explained Siphamandla principal, Andile Magadla. “We have a lot of space but we didn’t have people who could assist us with facilities.

“The youth today have turned to soccer because it doesn’t need a lot of equipment but our learners are very interested in cricket and very excited about the new facilities.”

The Gary Kirsten Foundation is committed to developing South African sporting talent in township areas, as there is a dire under-representation of black African cricketers in domestic, first-class and international cricketing structures.

Through the Township Cricket Development Initiative, the foundation supplies each school with

Excited cricket players with equipment received from the foundation. two artificial cricket nets – comprising a concrete base covered in astroturf with netting covering a steel frame - as well as complete kit bags with cricket equipment for an entire team. A full-time coach, under the guidance of the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy, further ensures a sustainable sporting ecosystem. The locally sourced and accredited coach also benefits from development programmes and an ongoing income. Access to the facilities is available to all surrounding schools and cricketing communities.

The inaugural recipient of this benevolent project was Khayalitsha’s Chris Hani Arts and Culture High School, headed by the charismatic, Madoda Mahlutshana.

“One of the key challenges we were faced with is the lack of sports’ facilities,” explained Mahlutshana. “We had no fields or equipment for our children to play sport.”

He explained that cricket is a popular sport in the impoverished township.

“One of our feeder schools has a cricket development programme but when the children come to high school, they are despondent because there are no facilities.”

True to his proactive nature, Mahlutshana approached the Gary

Kirsten Foundation about the school’s circumstances and was met with a warm welcome and enthusiasm from the team.

“Gary and I share the belief that we need to provide a platform in the townships to develop our players. It is no good taking children out of the townships to more privileged schools; we need to bring the facilities to the children.

“I believe that, with these facilities, in two to three years our players will be competent enough to play at the level of top league schools.”

Chris Hani and Siphamandla are two of 15 high schools in the area, each with an average of 1 200 pupils per school. Added to this number are the upcoming players from Khayalitsha Cricket Club, also looking to hone their skills, all of whom will benefit greatly from the recent donations.

Kirsten concluded: “Chris Hani and Siphamandla were identified as prime candidates for our development initiative and, as soon as the nets were installed, the youngsters – both boys and girls – started practicing and enjoying themselves.

This is exactly what we had hoped for and we anticipate they will make great strides in the cricketing arena.”

Songo poised to challenge the tough Ironman championship In 2015, Songo Fipaza completed his first Ironman Triathlon only six months after learning to swim.

Fipaza, from Kayamandi near Stellenbosch, overcame incredible odds to nail the tough 3.8km ocean leg of the African Ironman Championships well inside the time limit while also completing the 180km cycle ride and the 42km full marathon run.

In 2016, Fipaza wants to go one big step better and complete both the half and the full African Ironman Championships in the same year.

The half, known as the Ironman 70.3, takes place in East London on 24 January with a 1.9km swim, 90 km cycle ride and 21.5km half marathon, and then Fipaza plans to double up on everything and take on the full Ironman in Port Elizabeth on 10 April.

“After Songo’s decision to tackle both 70.3 East London & Ironman SA this year, his training has gone from strength to strength

and he is so much more confident in the water. Ultimately Songo would like to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i, so we have a few big training years ahead of us – but he is an extremely talented athlete so I have no doubt he will achieve his goals. Songo works hard in his training and this will transfer to a successful race in a few days’ time and then the last big push before the big one in April!” says Claire Horner, Virgin Active brand ambassador and owner of My Training Day Triathlon School.

Fipaza was a very competitive runner and cyclist before setting himself the goal of competing an Ironman, but the obvious barrier was that he did not know how to float let alone completing an exhausting ocean swim.

Horner introduced Fipaza to swimming coach Brett Wood and together they put in long hours to get him from being a complete novice in the water to the point where he

had both the physical and mental capabilities to conquer the water. “Last year I was very worried about the swim and wasn’t sure I was going to finish. Thanks to my team and Virgin Active, I can now just focus on the race and the training – I have put a lot of my energy into the swimming training so I can improve my times this year. Something close to my heart though, is to raise awareness about the need for a swimming pool for the youth in my community, Kayamandi”, shared Fipaza on his next goal.

Fipaza also has the energy after all his training to help uplift his hometown community of Kayamandi through an intensive programme which gives kids amazing opportunities to get active and to be healthy.
