Protesters face guns MANDLA MAHASHE The protest by Marikana Informal Squatters has now been put on hold, after it turned nasty, following clashes with their neighbours from Lower Crossroads.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Sunday after four people were killed and nine others injured due to the violent clashes.

Marikana leader Joseph Makeleni told City Vision that they had decided to halt their demonstrations after ‘thugs’ from Lower Crossroads allegedly started shooting at the protestors.

He said that the conflict began when houses in the neighbouring township were allegedly set alight by rouge elements within the protest group.

“When we went to assess the damage to those houses, we were met by gun-totting men.”

Makeleni said that it was the beginning of the end for their protest action.

“After that we were attacked and our homes were set alight and people were left dead and injured.

It is clear that this is politically engineered as they never liked us from the beginning,” he said.

On Tuesday the area was calm but tense as City Police and SAPS continued to monitor the situation.

Some residents from Marikana were evacuated and some are still living in fear.

A 31 year old father of two who did not want to be named said that the protest was hijacked by young agent provocateurs.

“They have made our lives even worse,” said the man.

“Various meetings were held by our community and there was an agreement that there would be a peaceful march but this later changed as the youths started conducting themselves violently.

As a result some people have already left this place.”

The man who works as a security guard in town says that he had sent his wife and children to live with family members outside the area since the conflict between the

“We are having sleepless nights as we fear that the people from the other side will come and shoot us. We have tried to speak with the people from Lower Crossroads and a truce was called.

It’s the young people that are the problem,” he said.

Makeleni said that the protests have been called off until peace is reached.

Gugulethu: A dream deferred PASTOR XOLA SKOSANA I once sat at a meeting in Gugulethu,in 1995, although almost everything about that meeting has since faded away.

The names and faces of the people in that room have also faded away with time.

The details about that meeting are murky, but what I recall is that the participants all shared the vision of an alternative society.

“Our vision is to turn Gugulethu into a suburb in the next ten years.”

Twenty years later, Gugulethu prides itself of being the only township to have a fully-fledged mall in their doorstep.

We will not go into the intricacies of who has real ownership of the Gugulethu shopping mall and the economy of extraction which leaves townships poorer, all in the name of infrastructural development and job creation.

Langa the oldest township has none, the closest shopping mall for the Langa residents is Vangate Mall, catering to the needs of Heideveld, Surrey Estate, Bontehuewel and the adjacent communities.

Khayelitsha has a string of shops connected at the hip; I don’t know if that qualifies for a shopping mall.

When Cape Town is viciously wet and cold customers in the so-called mall, bear the brunt.

A dream deferred Unfortunately, with Gugulethu Mall towering over the community, Gugulethu has not become a suburb, in fact, Gugulethu is worse off today than it was when we were sitting in that room twenty years ago.

Uluntu Centre, where the meeting was held two decades ago, is today a symbol of what has become of Gugulethu in the last twenty years.

The centre was once the beacon of light with service providers, from computer schools, youth development organizations, an Early Childhood Development Centre, doctor’s consulting rooms including an optometrist.

Today, Uluntu is a ghost of its former self.

Ravaged by poverty, unemployment, crime and many other social ills, Gugulethu and many other townships were historically designed as socially engineered hubs of cheap labour.

Gugulethu was established in the 1960’s as an extension of Langa. Townships are suffering accumulative effects of almost one hun-

With the lack of integrated town planning by officialdom, and because of migration, South African townships like Gugulethu are bursting at the seams.

Sibling rivalry is rife on house inheritances.

In South Africa today, a child as young as twelve can legally terminate her pregnancy without the consent of her parents, and consensual sex between children aged 12 to 16 is legal.

Government proposes to give access to condoms to kids as young as 10.

This is a symptom of how black society has disintegrated. It is statistically argued that every 26 seconds a woman or girl child is raped somewhere in South Africa.

An estimated of 500,000 rape cases take place in the country every year.

In 1998, one in three of the 4,000 women surveyed in Johannesburg was a rape victim.

It cannot be disputed that black women, particularly townships and in informal settlements, experience random rape at an alarming rate.

The courage to stop the carnage in black society does not lie only on moralizing people but lies in the courage to dismantle white power and the preservation of white privilege , whose direct consequence is black pain in all its dimensions and manifestations The response of the South African Council of Churches to the education minister’s proposal to distribute condoms at primary schools is not enough to stop the carnage and

assault on black life.

The very structure of human settlement is flawed to the core and parents, mostly women who are raising children under extreme set of circumstances, are left with very little option not to consider extreme measures in order to save the lives of their children even at the risk of robbing them of their innocent childhood.

Townships are a war zone where the most vulnerable: children, women, the disabled

and the so called foreigners, are all at the mercy of men whose social engineering has driven them to primal instincts.

Thus turning entire sections of the community to no go areas, primitive societies where reasoning and sensibility has no room.

Here lies the racial and economic fault lines in the South African political landscape through which millions of black people fall and disappear into statistics, a sort of a systemic cleansing of South African society of the impure race; the black people.

This state of affairs in South African townships must be laid squarely at the feet of policy makers, politicians who preside over and manage the resources on behalf of our people.

It is their tolerance of white power and the preservation of white privilege which is at the heart of separate development.

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt.

I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers.

Gay healers tell of their pain of isolation and torment It’s hard being gay and a sangoma, traditional healer Michael Khumalo told a workshop organised as part of the Khumbulani Pride events in Cape Town last Thursday.

The community did not take gay sangomas seriously, Khumalo said.

The workshop which was part of a series designed to educate communities about issues faced by gay and lesbian people.

People mocked gay sangomas and undermined their gifts, he said.

him and that he doesn’t want to be helped by a gay sangoma”, said Khumalo.

Another healer said that in some communities a gay traditional healer was called umthakathi (witch).

“People say that there is no such thing as a gay sangoma, and that there is no gay ancestor and that gay people do not have ancestors, so for them to become sangomas is just evil vibes and they are bewitching people and turning them gay”, said the healer.

Sindiswa Tafeni told the workshop that being lesbian in the township was hard enough, and being a lesbian sangoma was even harder because of the attitude of other sangomas.

“It’s hard to get clients because communities and straight healers speak badly of you.

If you go to a traditional ceremony where you meet other healers, they have an attitude of mockery and say that you are faking the healing gift and that being lesbian shows that your ancestors are angry at you,” said Tafeni.

Nokuthula Mbete, who works for the Quaker Peace Centre and is a traditional healer and a pastor, said some parents assumed that a child who disclosed that he or she was gay or lesbian was “bewitched” and that the family had been cursed.

The children were sent to traditional healers “to reverse the curse and heal the child from the homophobic disease”.

“People take homosexuality as something that can be solved, fixed or cured. I work with youth everyday.

Some get suicidal because their parents are giving them traditional medicine to cure the homosexual ‘disease’.

So even sangomas have to be educated

Participants in the workshop on the struggles of gay and lesbian sangomas. about sexuality and we have to change their stereotype mindset”, said Mbete.

Khumalo said sangomas were often blamed when initiates disclosed they were gay.

“Initiates do not tell their families that they are gay. When they are in the process of becoming a sangoma they come out of the closet.

When the family finds out about their sexuality they assume that the sangoma has turned the initiate gay, and discredit the

sangoma”, said Khumalo.

Paula Assubuji, human rights programme manager at Heinrich Boll Stiftung, said the aim of the discussion with traditional healers was to understand how the community responded to gay and lesbian traditional healers and the challenges they faced.

“There is a sense that African cultures are not aligned to human rights.

And some of the leaders who play important roles in society, say that homosexuality is not African.” Assubuji said.

Reflectors ensure learner safety MBONGISENI MASEKO Learners at Imbasa Primary School will no longer fall easy prey to speeding motorists driving past the school.

About 1170 learners from the school, based in Crossroads, have received reflective tracksuit tops from pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson, as part of their Safe Schools South Africa project.

The project is aimed at keeping children safe on their way to and from school.

An educational package for the project was developed from scratch by Takalani Sesame, and with coordination by the project team, this has augured well for the effective introduction of safe roads initiative in the country.

Vuyelwa Ndandazela, the school principal said the school was happy for being chosen to be part of the project.

“We are very happy to be part of Safe School Project, which promotes safety. We are very fortunate. We had incidents where our learners were knocked down by Amaphela, whose drivers do not obey the rules of the road.”

Ndandazela also said the school has since put a gate on the other side of the schools, which guaranteed the children’s safety, and to prevent future tragedy.

The project has been piloted in some of the most economically disadvantaged communities in the province.

Learners at the three pilot schools, Sivile Primary School, in Khayelitsha, Imbasa Primary School and A.C.J Phakade Primary School, in Strand, participating are at high risk of road traffic injury.

The research done for the project revealed that a high proportion of the children had suffered a road traffic injury.

Laura Nel, head of communication and public affairs at Johnson and Johnson, said the project was vital to ensure the safety of learners when they walked on the roads, more especially during school hours.

“We are very excited and humbled to be part of the project.

The principal here at the school has always stated her concerns around the safety of the learners,” Nel said.

The pilot project has developed an innovative model combining education for the learners, training for teachers and advocacy action to catalyse the introduction of safe road infrastructure.

The project also aims to engage with all the stakeholders, from the schools, to the engineers at the City of Cape Town and the local community, to be central in the initiative.

Learners and teachers at Imbasa Primary School, Crossroads, are happy to be part of Safe Schools South Africa project.

Francis Kente laid to rest FANIE JASON One of Gugulethu’s pioneering artists Nosisa Frances ‘Sta-Fray’ Kente was laid to rest last Saturday.

Born 88 years ago, Sis Frances as she was affectionately known, is the sister of the world renowned late playwright Gibson Kente, who was dubbed the “Father of Black Theatre in South Africa.”

She passed away on May 23 after a short illness.

Sis Frances turned her NY3A home into a “melting pot of talent”, as young artists the likes of the late Brenda Fassie are known to have often visited the house to hone their

musical talent.

Having spotted and nurtured Brenda’s talents, she introduced her brother Gibson, who immediately made it possible for “Mabrrr” to become a national icon.

Sis Frances was an inspiration to a lot of other artists.

If you wanted to catch a glimpse of any musical star, you simply popped in at her famous watering hole and you were sure to bump into jazz greats like saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, pianist Tete Mbambisa and saxophonist Ezra Ngcukana and many more. Many will remember Sis Frances as ‘Gogo Nombasa’ in a television film titled Mama’s Love produced her brother.

All in a day’s work for dancers PHARIE SEFALI Every day after school a group of young people from different schools in different parts of Nyanga gather together at Oscar Mpetha High School for a minimum of two hours for dance lessons.

The group consists of males and females who have made it their mission to take out their daily frustration by sweating through a tough dance practice.

They dance to kwaito, hip-hop and traditional dancing in a prefababricated classroom. It is dark and there are no lights. It is cold, but there is a heater, although the body heat of people dancing also warms it up.

Shaun Malima, a student at Oscar Mpetha, says he takes part in the daily dancing because he doesn’t want to associate himself with crime related activities in his neighborhood.

“When I come here, I get the opportunity to be free and be myself. People assume that every young male in Nyanga is involved in crime and that is not true.”

Relebohile Diphooko says she loves the dance classes because it is where she has

freedom and a break from the difficulties she faces as a young girl.

“Being here every day makes me creative and it gives me some sense of belonging and the space to be myself. The youth tend to be involved in things that do not develop them, thus destroying their future.

We are here to change that, and to show the youth in Nyanga that they don’t have to fall into the trap of crime and poverty”, she says.

Ntombizodwa Dayeni, is the coordinator and coach of the group.

She said that the project is part of the Western Cape Department of Social Development’s Mass Participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) programme.

Dayeni is also a member of the Likhwezi Art Project, also based in Nyanga, says that the reason for the MOD programme is to keep young people active.

“The programme is created to take the youth away from gangsterism.

We also focus on learners who are not doing well academically and we encourage them to do activities such as dancing, sports and other extra mural activities,” she says.

Some high school students in Nyanga are working hard to eliminate the stigma that Nyanga is most known for: its high crime rate. They are investing their free time in dancing.

“We identified that some learners prefer doing arts and culture and sport, in which case we take them to arts schools and sports academies so that they at least build a career.”

Dayeni says she loves what she is doing with the students.

Dancing is her passion, she says, and she loves seeing young people develop into good dancers.

Massive Muzik production MANDLA MAHASHE Messive Muzik is a group of young music producers whose aim is to have a massive impact on the music industry.

Ten producers from Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Philippi have established an umbrella body that showcases the talents possessed by local artists.

Fundile “Furah” Makeleni, Wanda “SirBondas” April, Siphe Tebeka, Lwando “L-Dee”Daweti, Sphamandla “C-Pha” Mpulampula, Lizwi “ISO-1900” Nyandu, Sinalo “MuziqBlend” Majova, Zingisa “Zingdeep” April, Olwethu Blaqkendi Ntsukumbini and Paul “Jovis” Tshaba are the members of this crew, established in October last year.

Makeleni told City Vision that the movement might be new but these producers have been around.

“Most us have been in the music industry for a long time making music and are well known in house music circles. The problem is we hardly see any success in the local music scene for producers,” he said.

As a result of this, they have established

the movement to escalate the creativity of underrated townships and unite communities through music, he said.

“Our members have been releasing singles and the reception has been good. We are now working towards releasing a compilation album at the end of the year.

In the mean while we will continue to release individual singles and collaborations with each other and other artists locally,” he said.

The group’s next big move is the release of a music video by L-Dee featuring Siphe Tebeke, formerly with the group Deep Consol.

The song is entitled Me & You and features Anni and the filming of the video will begin on 27 June.

Makeleni said that the group’s strongest point is the diversity within the collective.

“We are a group of musicians with totally different. “We have something for almost every house music fan as some of us are producing Deep, Tribal, Soulful and even vocal,” said Makeleni.

Inkanyamba hits right chord MANDLA MAHASHE The youth of Langa could find themselves benefiting from 25 years worth of music experience and skills.

That is if the Inkanyama Productions youth development project gets off the ground.

This initiative aims to offer music education to youngsters, develop jazz in the townships and revive the love of jazz.

At the helm of Inkanyamba Productions is Fezile ‘Ringo’ Ndzuzo, a guitarist that went from the streets of Langa to touring countries such as the Netherlands.

Ndzuzo has had a long career both as a performing artist as wells as sound engineer after qualifying as a jazz musician in 1994.

He has performed in Europe in musicals the likes of Diamonds & Dust, which he had devised with the Barnyard Theatre and went on to take part in almost every show that the Barnyard Theatre has hosted for the past ten years.

He now wants to share his skills and the knowledge gained in his illustrious career with the youth of his community.

“There is an abundance of talent in

Langa, with young artists showing their mettle each year, but there is not enough space to nurture such talent.

At Inkanyamba we want to refine them in the Jazz genre and teach them not only the musical side but the business aspect of the industry,” he said.

He noted that throughout the years Langa has been famed for producing music greats such as Brenda Fassie and Ezra Ngewana to mention a few.

He said that times have changed and such talents are not being discovered in the current generation.

“In the 1990s Inkanyamba used to host Jazz events in the country and bring unknown future stars such as Judith Sephuma, Jimmy Dludlu and Selaelo Selota.

We are looking forward to staging those kinds of events to revive the love of Jazz music in our townships,” he said.

“The biggest challenge is the lack of funding. “We have a huge problem of drug and alcohol abuse in our townships and I believe that projects like these are pivotal in fighting the scourge,” he said.

Bongani Dlwathi, principal at Sonwabo Primary School, told City Vision that donations were always welcome at the school as many of the parents could not afford uniforms for their children.

“The majority of the learnersat at this school are from the informal settlements and impoverished areas.

Many of the parents are either unemployed or working in low paying jobs with long hours. They then are unable to see to the needs of the children and it is for this reason that organisations like PSA can play a role in assisting,” said Dlwathi.

He said that even though Sonwabo is a free tuition school, parents were still finding it difficult to afford items such as clothing and stationery for their children.

“We need those with the capability to help

According to the association, the 100 recipients at the school, based in Gugulethu, will have something to smile about this winter.

Since most of the children come from poor backgrounds, she said her organisation believed the donation will make a big difference to the tots.

Dalasile added that she had seen the need for the woolens first hand on a recent visit to members of her organisation at the school. “During my visits I noticed a lot of the pupils did not have jerseys and I found that very worrying considering that we were already in the winter season.

Butler back where it all started One of Cape Town’s finest jazz exports, Grammy Award winning Jonathan Butler, will be performing a one-night-only concert as part of the Winter Jazz Festival.

The festival, which takes place at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Friday 12 and Saturday 12 June, will also include performances

by Americanjazz songstress Oleta Adams, jazz saxophonist Euge Groove and internationally-acclaimed soul singer, Musiq Soulchild.

The youngest of 13 children, Butler grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, ruled by Apartheid and segregation. He began his singing career at age seven, releasing his first album in 1973 and winning the Best New Artist Grammy in South Africa the following year at age 12. He made history by being the first black artist played on white South African radio while earning three gold records.

More than a decade later, Butler moved to London, England after signing with Jive Records and released his first album internationally. The self-titled set went gold in 1987 in the United Kingdom and in the USA. He received Grammy nominations for Best

R&B Song for his R&B-pop vocal hit “Lies” and for Best Jazz Song for the instrumental “Going Home.” His genre-busting material has earned him songwriter’s awards and received abundant airplay. Butler’s 2004 album, Surrender, went gold in South Africa where he remains a superstar.

Butler is still taking care of people at home. In 2014 he launched the Jonathan Butler Foundation to fund music education programmes that give children the purpose to overcome a life of drugs and poverty, just as he did.

Nal’ibali, nal’ithamsanqa isiXhosa speaking children have until Friday 24 July to enter the Puku Children’s Literature Foundation Story Competition.

Sponsored by REDISA (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa), and supported by the Nal’ibali Reading-for-Enjoyment campaign, this competition not only celebrates and preserves the isiXhosa language and rich heritage of storytelling, but also raises awareness of the importance of taking care of the environment by inviting young people to write in isiXhosa on environmental themes.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Celebrating our Legacy and Inven-

ting the Future” with the focus on the environment and children between the ages of 13 and 19 are invited to submit their 500 to 1500 word handwritten isiXhosa story marked with their name, surname, area, the school they attend and their contact details.

Cape Town participants can drop their entry off at Langa Library, Khayelitsha Public Library, Mfuleni Public Library, Belville Library, Gugulethu Library or the Philippi East Public Library before Friday 24 July. The first prize is worth R10 000, the second is worth R5000 and the third, R3000. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on International Literacy Day on Tuesday 8 September.

Therefore, we need a national debate regarding the colonial name that is South Africa., which should be replaced with Azania.

Azania should be a country that replaces colour with human beings. Not distinct tribal entities.

A nation that will be governed as Azania, who pays their allegiance to the country and continent.

We need a unitary state of Azania that that is not encumbered with colonial frills and trappings, an Azania that doesn’t massacre its own, an Azania that doesn’t incacerate its own in Robben Island, that is free of multi-racialism but of one nation, an Azania of fellow human beings residing in fellowship.

We need to establish an Azania that is free of fellow African hatred, Xenophobia, imperialism, capitalism, tribalism, Boer Voortrekker Afrikanner settler apartheid colonialism and all other forms of oppresion, including Herenvolkism.

This state will be able to liquidate any particular type of colonialism mixed with imperialism, capitalism and multi-racialism.

We would like to see an Azania that does not flirt with either of the two power mongering blocks, America and Sovieto.

Azania should not be aligned to these two so-called super powers of worldwide evil. Azania should be where the human spirit blossoms to the fullest.

We want a new Azania, an Azania reborn, an Azania that puts social cohesion into practice.

Help the youth build future A lot is taking place in this occupied country of ours.

On the one hand, we are reviewing the Nkandla report, with all its contradictory statements, and on the other it is the Marikana commisiion of inquiry, which report has not beeb made public yet.

Then there is the Fifa and Safa saga involving 10 million dollars, ooh and that still outstanding Arms Deal report.

Yet here in Cape Town its the Cape Flats invasion and Marikana “Land invasions” re JP Smith.

With all those mouthful reports in line, we are now in June, Youth Month, and so it will bbe the usual staple of what the government and the political parties have to say about the jobless youth, the youth that dropped out of school, the youth that is deep in trouble due to drug and alcohol abuse, ooh and that youth that will be voting for the first time next year.

While the president, in partnership with the NYDA are expected to give us the way forward in terms of youth activities and the theme: “Youth Moving SA Forward”, for this year.

I would expect that the activities will speak more to the youth who are doing their level best to move this country forward.

I would expect that the theme will encourage the youth to create means and ways of starting sustainable businesses ventures, or NGOs and CBOs.

The fact of the matter is many youth are jobless and doing all the wrong stuff because they do not have the means to do so.

If the government and its agencies can assist and encourage youth to create and be able to sustain projects, then that will result in productivity and value.

Statistic show that in Brazil and India, job creators are small, medium enterprises.

Push the youth to play in that space.

In fact if we assist the pioneer of businesses ventures, NGOs and CBO’s to sustain the their projects, the truth is that the potential is very huge that the pioneers will employ or add other youth in thyeir projects and that will result in many youth being active in good ventures.

I’m aware that not everyone is an inventor but those who invent do it for the benefit of others.

So I expect the President with his partners to look in that direction and add resources there.

I’m sure the short and long term result will be lucrative for everyone.

For information sake: Last year we didn’t have the youth Parliament (Not that it helps or get to implement the one day resolutions, any way) so it’s useless, unnecessary expenditure on the youth account. Let’s spend the money were it will add value.I was there in 2013 when we spent more than R100 000 in one day.

It is in this context that the renaming of colonial streets names in many African countries has aroused heated public debate.

Colonialism played a major role in “erasing” the identities of the conquered and colonised communities in many ways.

For example, the colonisers got rid of the indigenous or local names of many places and streets.

They replaced these with names that represented the colonisers’ identities, culture and ideologies.

Stellenbosch University has replaced a plaque commemorating former apartheid Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd with the South African flag in May 2015.

It has taken the university 21 years to make the move, but it is not enough.

Afrikaans language policy must also be changed to break away from institutional

discrimination.

English should be the language of instruction in all aspects of the University, so that students who don’t understand Afrikaans are not being marginalized.

The City of Cape Town continues to celebrate apartheid leaders in today’s South Africa and this is regressive and an insult to the many whose blood was lost in attaining our freedom.

This symbolism takes us back to the era of Nationalist Party. Murderers had their names emblazoned on every corner of significant geographic location.

Architects of Apartheid, Hendrik Verwoerd, John Vorster, D F Malan, Paul Kruger, and many more racists, have their names all over the Western Cape landscape.

The Economic Freedom Fighters will be speeding up the name changing process that will reflect the indigenous population and their contribution towards economic and political freedom.

Dubbed as the fast and flat route, the sixth annual Dave Spence Memorial 10km is expected to draw a huge field when it takes place on June 16.

RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club organiser Marshall Moila said the race has grown in popularity.

“All the runners want to come to Gugulethu because they like its fastness and flatness,” said Marshall.
