A

surge in crime as well as apparent attacks on Uber drivers in and around Philippi has prompted some residents to barricade the streets with debris and sand to prevent cars from passing through. According to residents this is one way to protect themselves against costly incidents and crime. It is alleged that criminals hijack vehicles, and in the process endanger people’s lives by speeding through the streets.

Dimbaza Street resident Lonwabo Vangaye said hijacking incidents are too common in the Browns Farm area. “The criminals call Uber drivers and when they arrive they hijack their cars. This has been happening for a while now and the people who are doing this are young children,” said Vangaye. He added that at least three people, in his street alone, had been injured during hijackings. To prevent speeding cars and avert hijackings, he said they initially dug trenches on the road, but that did not help. “We then decided to barricade the street so that the cars don’t come into our street at

all. Our children are in danger because criminals steal or hijack cars during the day. Uber drivers no longer come here at night, they are scared of being robbed,” he said. Vangaye added that their appeals for raised speed humps fell on deaf ears. “We’ve been asking the ward councillor for speed humps but he doesn’t seem to care. He knows about the hijackings in Philippi. This is not the only street that is barricaded, there are many of them. People are tired of crime,” he stated. Ward councillor Nkululeko Mgolombane said he is aware of the blocked streets. He said this is having a negative impact on ser-

vice delivery. “The people that hijack Uber drivers are school children. I think they are bored and have nothing to do since the schools are closed,” he said. Mgolombane said the hijackings have also created a bad impression about Philippi. He said several streets have been identified for the installation of speed humps. “We are waiting for the ward allocation budget to be released this year then we will start. “We identified some streets like Ruth First, Moon Wood Drive, and Mandela Road,” he said.
