T

he family of a man who was gunned down during a police raid in Langa, says they have been left with more questions than answers.

On Sunday 10 September, Thembalethu Poni,33, and another man, were gunned down inside a shack in Zone 17 in Langa.

His mother, Nomawaka, 58, now says she is in the dark regarding the circumstances around the death of her son.

Speaking to City Vision, she said that even as she visited the crime scene, no-one told her what happened that her son lay dead.

“They just gave me his belongings, a chain and a wallet, and told me to go collect his body at the morgue.

Worst of all, when I arrived at the mortuary I found that my son was listed as an unknown,” she said.

She said she wanted to know why her son was killed and why his body was abandoned at the mortuary despite revealing herself as the mother of the deceased.

“I know that he was not a saint and that he used to drink and smoke with his friends but we need closure as a family,” she said.

She said according to information she received from a neighbour, Thembalethu and other men were in a shack smoking and drinking when cops raided the place.

Gunshots rang out and his body was found on the street.

“It was around 8pm when the neighbour heard multiple gunshots and then he(Thembalethu) was seen lying down on the street. The police have not told us why he was killed or whether he was wanted or did he try to fight the police; no one is talking,” she said.

Police have revealed that Thembalethu was part of a group of men who exchanged gun fire with officers.

Captain FC van Wyk said: “Metro police officers were following up on information about a wanted suspect regarding an attempted murder and robbery in Langa. “When they arrived at the shack ... the suspects fired at the police officers,”

Langa woman,26, killed in K’Litsha MBONGISENI MASEKO When Amanda Myeki paid a visit to her boyfriend’s house in Ekuphumleni, Khayelitsha one Saturday afternoon earlier this month, she couldn’t have known that it would be the last her child saw of her.

Amanda,26, from Langa, is alleged to have died at the hands of her boyfriend, who is also the father of their one year old child.

She was laid to rest last Saturday in Langa.

The suspect, Buhle Mkhaliphi, is in custody until his next appearance on 17 October, made a second appearance in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday a week ago.

The details of the trial were still sketchy at the time of going to trial.

Nomonde Myeki, 42, an aunt of the deceased, said they were still in the dark as to what transpired on that fateful day.

“We received a call from one of the relatives of the boyfriend to come to Khayelitsha as Amanda has been killed,” Nomonde said.

Langa claimants meeting Mcebisi Skwatsha, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, is expected to meet the land claimants of KwaNdabeni Community Claim in Langa.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide feedback on the status of the claim regarding the latest developments.

The meeting will take place at Langa Sports Complex on Monday 25 September at 11am. All registered claimants are invited to attend this important meeting.

‘Expired tablets’ woman claims abuse MANDLA MAHASHE

A

fter City Vision published an article about a woman patient receiving expired medicines at a local clinic, authorities have urged people to make use of the government’s hotline to report unsatisfactory service provision in any of its departments.

Last week, we published a story headlined: “Woman says she was given expired tablets”, 13 September 2017, in which the patient claimed to have been given old tablets.

The 36-year-old woman, who asked not to be named, sounded very bitter and fearful after her ordeal.

On the same day that the woman visited the hospital again, City Vision reporters received a call from the woman’s husband, alleging that she had been sitting in the waiting room for hours on end without assistance.

“They said that they could not find her folder and that she must wait. She waited for hours and when she decided to enquire, the Sister in Charge told he that she must wait since she had run to the media,” he said.

He added that he was shocked to learn that his wife was being victimised for blowing the whistle on bad service.

Departmental spokesperson Monique Johnson encouraged patients to speak to the manager and lay a formal complaint when they are mistreated.

“Management of the facility will investigate the allegation and address the matter with the client once the investigation has been concluded. Patients can call 0860142142 or 0797691207.

A patient has accused this health care facility workers of victimization after she complained about expired medicine.

Foetal Alcohol Syndrome spotlight I

n South Africa, it is widely recognized by corporates and society alike the unique circumstances in which we operate.

Big businesses and communities have far reaching responsibilities that go beyond just helping family and customers, but collectively address issues that affect and impact us all.

We are a nation that is sometimes forced to empower itself and do great things.

At a breakfast event on 14th September, hosted by the Old Mutual Provincial management board, held in Beyers Kloof in the Western Cape, representatives from the Nedbank Business Banking space, Old Mutual Corporate division, Broker distribution and members of the agricultural sector, used the platform to discuss the power and benefits of collaboration and partnership with an objective to uplift the province and make a positive difference.

These regular provincial engagements with key stakeholder in the various provinces are a powerful and effective way that Old Mutual, through discussion with key players in the province, can tap into the very fabric of each of the provinces and identify the needs, challenges and opportunities.

At the event on Thursday the Old Mutual Foundation and the western Cape Provincial Management board once again identified an area of need within the community and demonstrated its support of the vulnerable members of society and donated R50 000 to the Beyers Truter FAITH Fund, to help combat Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

FAS poses a serious problem to various communities throughout the world but is recorded as posing the greatest risk in South Africa, which has the highest reported cases of babies born with this FAS. The organisation aims to raise awareness surrounding the dangers of FAS and how it can be prevented.

FAS is found in children whose mothers consume large amounts of alcohol during

Come celebrate heritage day with the oldest Kasi in eKapa While we should celebrate our extremely rich heritage as a nation every day, it is during the month of September, particularly on Heritage Day, that all our focus is singularly directed at the features that define us as a people.

Our culture, comprises of our traditions, languages, food, buildings, music or art, which still exist from the past and which have a historical importance.

Heritage is very important to Langa as the first officially established African township in Cape Town because this township as a whole- which will be turning one hundred years old in six years time- is itself a heritage site.

Langa Heritage Foundation, as custodians of heritage in the area, take a holistic approach to heritage by trying to protect the original built environment of the area, where possible, with a view to create tourism products that stimulate local entreprenuership, develop the local economy, self awareness, knowledge and pride in its people.

KAC race shows way to good life M

embers of the Khayelitsha Athletic Club (KAC) can pat themselves on the back after successfully hosting the Khayelitsha 10km race a fortnight ago.

The event on the Western Province Athletics calendar offered 5km and 10km distances and took participants through the streets of Khayelitsha with early rising residents cheering the runners along.

KAC Chairperson Sizeka ‘Sizzles’ Mndwane hailed the race as a great success and thanked all the sponsors, the runners and the community at large for supporting the club.

“We would like to thank Avbob, Zone Fitness, Old Mutual, City Vision, Vodacom Shoprite, the City of Cape Town’s traffic department, the department of health, the South African Police Services for their support and our members for their sacrifices,” said Mndwane.

She also thanked the Western Province Athletics (WPA) - Road Running for assisting the club in organising the event.

“This year we received a very good report unlike other years but we know there is a room for growth and learning from our mistakes,” she said.

Mndwane said the club is one of the fastest growing clubs in the WPA fold and that was a good “sign that we were doing the right thing”.

“The residents of Khayelitsha have woken up to the idea of healthy living and running is the best way to keep fit and healthy,” she said.

Khayelitsha Athletics Club members in a jovial mood after participating in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday.

One KAC member Duma Soko was weighing 118 kgs before joining the club and has trimmed his fat to a mere 78kgs.

“Running with this bunch of positive people makes me want to achieve more. I ran my first marathon on Sunday and I will be

on the road more,” he said.

City Vision editor Voox Sonandzi, also a club member and keen runner said he was touched to see the growth of the club. Hesaid this was a sign that people were really becoming health conscious.

he TAS Bonga.Org Cycling Academy Inter-Schools Cycling League ended on a high note and boy, are organisers smiling from ear to ear.

Aptly named the Township Cycling Summit the event saw more learners participating in the competition at Chris Hani Art and Culture School in mid-August..

TAS BCA founder Bonga Ngqobane said their mission was to engage youth in historically disadvantaged communities and schools positively.

“We found the need to formalize and structure a programme that would draw attention and expand exposure to the sport of cycling that has been fast growing in the township of Khayelitsha,” he said.

“One of the main reasons we put together this programme which is the ISCL into public school, we wanted to introduce our historically disadvantaged community schools into cycling and change the perception that cycling is only for rich people and also try to convince black girls to try cycling as a sport, and lastly to bring the sport of cycling to the doorsteps of our communities,” he said.

Ngqobane hailed the school’s management for allowing them to “preparing for the event.”

“We found out that the turnout actually exceeded the number we expected on the day, which was very interesting to us. This showed us that the programme attracted and created vibe in our community and the schools more importantly,” he said William Newman, MD of the head sponsor The Answer Series, congratulated the BCA team for putting together a high class event right in the heart of the township.

“I must commend Bonga.Org Cycling Academy for putting together this fantastic event, we all thought it would be raining today but I see the weather has played along

and I know we are going to have a very good day.

“I am very encouraged by what is see in terms of talent and this is the future of our sport with the support BCA needs and kids I know this is a sustainable project and this is the future,” said Newman.

He said there was hope that some of the cyclist would go on to represent the countryat the Olympic games.

“There is no reason the team representing SA can’t come from young boys and girls Khayelitsha ISCL and I would really like to commend BCA team again for putting together this fantastic event and I would like to see this growing from strength to strength. There has to be weekly events to give all the talented young boys and girls opportunity,” said Newman.

The event commenced with the age 10-13 year old group with 12 riders. It was a great performance from all riders.

“This is my first race ever and I want to thank BCA for the opportunity and I so wish we can have more of this races here in Khayelitsha” said Lonwabo Mhlasela who took the first place in his age category (U/13).

At 9h30 the ladies lined up to start their race at 09h40, Ncebakazi Mkodeni the defending champion was amongst the bunch ready to defend her title.

Before the race started, we spoke to her: “My plan is to just try keeping my pace and trying to get away from the other girls the second lap” said Ncebakazi.

Eventually we saw that happening as Ncebakazi broke away from the first lap and took the 2017 TAS ISCL title.

“I was well prepared for this race and the results proved it,” said Ncebakazi.

Around 10h30 the main race started as Elite riders and U/23s, Sipamandla Poto from Masiyile High School was amongst the riders with the 2015 defending champion Azukile Simayile from Stellenbosch winning again.

Bam returns to weave the magic in the ring

SINETHEMBA MANDYOLI Sinethemba Bam is due for an interesting comeback into the boxing ring when he faces veteran pugilist Simo Mbande in Hope Street on 22 September 2017.

Bam’s career was going well with wins against top prospects in the country, such as Gola, Ntshili and Hobyani until he was stopped in round seven by Lerato Dlamini.

In his three year career, Bam has won the IBF Youth Super Bantamweight title and was once a mandatory challenger in the same division.

With a 12 year old professional boxing career, Mbande is not a stranger to the Cape Town crowds as he has duelled about five times in the province.

Some of his notable opponents include Toto Helebe, Bompi Ndema, Gambinga, Tembo and Nxoshe.

The quality of the opponents that Mbande has faced is proof enough that he is not a perfect pushover for a young blood like Bam even though he has suffered seven knockouts in his 12 losses.

The bill will feature five international bouts between local and those coming from other African countries.

Most of the visiting boxers will be from the promoter’s home country, the Demo-

cratic Republic of Congo and from Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

The tournament will also feature a charity grudge bout between Cruiserweights Martin Lewis and Bruce Benjamin over four rounds.

Both are South African.

Bruce Benjamin is a well-known fitness fanatic who works in one of the fitness chains in the city, whereas Martin Lewis is a renowned television specialist.

The full fight card is: Junior Welterweight: 6 rounds, Ilunga Masala (DRC) vs Vusumzi Tyatyeka(SA) over six rounds.

Featherweight: Sinethemba Bam (CTN) versus Simon Mbande(PE), over six rounds.

Heavyweight: Tian Fick (SA) Vs Mugabon Mudimba (DRC) over four rounds., Bantamweight: Lazola Jikazana (SA) vs Edward Nyamwanda (Tanzania) over four rounds, Light weight: Tawanda Chigwida (Zim) vs Siphenathi Qampi (SA) over six rounds.
