uly 16 1997 is a date etched in the memory of Nombeko Mpongo.

It is a day she remembers because it changed the course of her life forever.

At the age of Twenty-four, she was gangraped by a group of men in NY5, in Gugulethu, while on her way to work from KTC, where she stayed, to Heideveld train station.

As the women of the nation celebrated Women’s Day yesterday (Wednesday), Nombeko is alway reminded that the day falls ex-

actly seven days shy to the day she was violated and stripped of her dignity.

After her ordeal, she was diagnosed as HIV+, and her world fell apart.

“These men came out of nowhere and raped me and they stabbed someone who tried to help me,” she recalled during an interview. She never got to know the man who risked his life to save hers, and her assailants were never brought to justice. Her ordeal also affected members of her family, not least her mother who passed away in 2003, still a broken woman.

“It was difficult to talk about the ordeal at first. But I learnt the lesson that there is life after HIV. My mother died in 2003 worrying of my ill health ... She worried a lot about me,” Nombeko said.

She concedes that she spent the first nine after her rape angry and cursing the day the rape happened. She is adamant though that today, she is a “better person.”.

Her mainstay is the support she gets from other activists who are in the same space as her, and others with little or no support, but trundle on nevertheless.

Nombeko Mpongo is a true survivor.

Such was the success of this selfless cause, that an insurance giant has added it to their Care to Share project.

They have agreed to assist her with about R5000, 00 to purchase shoes for school kids every November.

But she is not confined to only handing out shoes to underprivileged kids every now and again.

“Every day we become victims of sexual abuse from our brothers and fathers.

Teenagers are abused daily, hence I have opted for a career in Education and Psychology.

I want to assist young girls who are victims of rape. Every day in our schools, we have cases of kids suffering abuse at the hands of stepfathers and brothers, and nothing is being done about that.

It has become a norm for mothers of victims to stand by their men once these atrocities come to the fore.

Reasons vary for this worrying phenomenon, with studies showing that women fear the spectre of financial instability once their partners are prosecuted.

Economic dependency is at the centre of this betrayal by mothers against their own children.

These challenges actually affect learner’s performance in class and thus sets them back a great deal.

Teachers face the daunting task of not only having to teach the learners but also to pick up domestic problems, as they become hard to teach once they come from dysfunctional families.

“These anomalies prevent the learners from focusing on learning. If you go to schools, teachers are complaining that learners are hard to teach,” she explains.

Namhla says these challenges have also become all too familiar in the classroom, and it needs people like her to identify and act upon.

She has a personal reference to some of the challenges.

Once, an aunt gave Namhla her own shoes to wear to school, and as everybody knows, children can be “brutally honest,” they turned her into the butt of their jokes, with some comparing the shoes to those worn by security guards.

As I prepare to leave, Namhla asserts: “Kids need role models. We run for these glamorous careers, forgetting where we come from.

Education takes you back to the community and reminds you where you come from.

I grew up in Acacia Park, so we share more or less of the challenges faced by a township like Gugs.

People are infected daily with HIV. Some learners are HIV-positive and we need to assist them.

In class, you deal with kids that are infected and affected. Before a lesson, one is required to give that child their medication because their mother is not there.

You need to constantly remember that so-and-so takes his or her medication at a particular time. If we run away from our communities, who’s going to take care of those we leave behind.

Namhla and others who strive for the better lives of others make me feel proud.

Local neighbourhood watch members work as facility wardens to protect property from vandals

Facility protectors in on the task T

he facilities protection pilot project launched earlier this year to curb vandalism and theft at 10 City facilities has provided the blueprint for the expansion of the project in hot-spots across Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town intends to more than double the resources allocated to its facility protection officers (FPOs) initiative.

The programme was piloted in Nyanga and Gugulethu earlier this year, with the appointment of 50 local neighbourhood watch members as facility wardens and eight auxiliary law enforcement officers to patrol and protect sports complexes and community centres.

They work under the leadership of operational commander, Senior Inspector Linda Gantsho.

Since their deployment, there have only been three cases of vandalism and theft from facilities, incurring damage of just over R70 000.

Compare this with eight other cases of vandalism, with damage incurred at R800 000 for the same period last year.

The FPOs have also made 13 arrests, has issued 479 fines and confiscated 2 200 counterfeit DVDs/CDs and even impounded a truck involved in illegal dumping.

‘The statistics are all the motivation we need to expand this programme to other areas. Not only do we safeguard our facilities for the enjoyment of the communities they serve, but we also provide employment and an economic injection into these same communities.

The facility protection officers also offer another layer of visible policing as their pa-

trols and powers are not limited to the sports fields and libraries they are employed to protect,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

The City has dedicated a R20 million budget for the programme for this financial year for salaries, four weeks of training per recruit, equipment and vehicles.

The number of staff will increase from the initial 58 to 224, comprising 64 auxiliary law

Olwam makes life easier for girls by giving sanitary pads A young Gugulethu promoter has decided to make a difference in the lives of young girl children by making their cycles as bearable as possible.

Olwam Mbema, from Station Park in Gugulethu, has donated a trancje of sanitary pads to young girls at Litha Primary School.

She said this was her way of giving back to the community since she launched her events business two years ago.

“In 2015 I hosted my first event for local rap performers and Djs. Since then the business has grown in leaps and bounds.

I then decided that this year I wanted to go big. So I hosted an event on my birth-

day which was on the 30th of July to be able to make this donation possible,” she said.

She said that she understood the plight of young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds and their struggle for sanitary pads.

“Many of them use unhygienic alternatives to sanitary pads which puts them at a health risk, which may cause infections. I just want to give hope to them and make sure that they don’t miss school just because they don’t have pads,” she said. She said that she is happy to see young girls not being ashamed and embarrassed and to see them with their dignity intact,” she added.

Alutha Taho has recently released a debut single titled Ndive Ndikhala, pinning her hopes on the hearts of many.

Taho, 25, is from Harare who became a recording artist as early as 2005 while a member of the now defunct hip hop group, GMC. She said that she wrote the song as homage to music which has helped her deal with heartbreak in her life.

“I have been through some tough times and every time I just get on my guitar and sing.

Writing music has been very therapeutic for me so with this song I just explain this,” she said.

Despite her smooth voice and heart warming lyrics, Taho said she has had many disappointments as an artist.

“GMC split a few years after it was formed.

After that split I decided to take a break from music.

I came back and I joined another group, this time, a soul hip hop group called Encore and again the group split as a result of difference of opinion.

I was so shattered, I even considered quitting music in 2015.

But I went back into the studio and started recording as a solo artist.

I had no label and no management, I was just making music,” she said.

It was around this time she met Thando Mtyobile, founder of Sisonke Music Entertainment, who then signed her.

She said that she has learnt a lot about the industry, key among which is patience.

“Sometimes it takes a lot to get where you want so I have to be patient.

Also to be careful of who you work with as other people have bad intentions but I’m happy where I am right now,” she said.

Khayelitsha singer Alutha is ready to sing for the world.

She said that her debut single is just a teaser for what she is planning to do in the industry.

There is a big storm coming, she says excitedly. She said that she is busy recording for the full offering which will be released later this year.

“I just want people to hear my music and share my gift. I want to see the world and if my music can do that for me then I know that I’m successful,” she said.

Death of learners mourned in school MBONGISENI MASEKO

ukani Primary School in Lower Crossroads recently held a memorial service for two learners who lost their lives after their shack was gutted in a fire.

Sisipho and Sinovuyo Masitha, both six and eight years respectively, died along with four other family members.

School principal Zamuxolo Langa described the loss of the grades R and three as great.

Learners, teachers and parents joined in the memorial service, which was held last Thursday inside the premises of the school.

Langa said the news of their deaths left everybody devastated as it happened a day after the schools opened for the third term.

“We were so shocked and we did not expect such a thing. It has knocked us. Their teachers said their performance in class was good. It is the first time our school has lost children in such a tragic manner.

Usually our learners lose their belongings such as stationery and school uniforms in shack fires, but never their lives,” Langa said.

He also said this happened as teachers and learners were still coming to terms with the death of Ntombentsha Mzimasi, a teacher who died in June after a short illness.

Nokuzola Mfaxa, Sinovuyo’s class teacher, said she had high hopes about her.

“I felt a terrible pain after I learnt of her death as we visited the scene. I do not cry easily when I feel pain, but for her I could not help it.

She was one learner that did her work without problems. She was very diligent.

She was my biggest hope in class and for the upcoming annual systemic tests for schools in the province.

I knew she would boost(the mark for) my class. She was always eager to help other learners to understand their work. I still call her name in class, because I was used to calling her. It is a great loss for the school,” Mfaxa said.

Anathi Mqeku, a grade three learner said Sinovuyo was a good classmate.

“We all loved her in class. She was a kind of person who would share anything with us and we also shared with her when we had something to eat,” Mqeku said.

Aunt Phumeza Mbanga said they were still in the dark as to what caused the fire.

“We are still feeling so bad about their death. We really do not know what caused the fire,” Mbanga said.

Funeral arrangements have not be made.

Black women have to start businesses, selling small items for an even smaller profit.

These women can be categorized into two groups; those whose husbands’ salary is not enough or same partners have wasteful habits, spending most of their income on alcohol or widows.

It is a historical fact that not many husbands or fathers could afford to leave a legacy for the offspring or spouses.

A tribute to Cyril, a hero and adonis of sorts WISEMAN NAKO Cyril Thulani Ngcukana is no more.

When I heard of his demise, I found solace in a song by Teddy Pendergrass: So Sad The Song That Says Goodbye.

I could not contain my emotions and felt tear streaming down my face at this announcement.

My memories raced back to the times we spent together, as we were both born and bred at Langa and lived next door to each other.

Cyril came from a family of musicians and at an early age also displayed a talent for music. His was not an exception. Columbus. Ezra. Duke and others.

His instruments of choice growing up were the guitar and the melodica out of which he played various songs.

Handsome dude Besides being a musical prodigy, Cyril looked good and handsome dude, with an eye for style and elegance.

He could easily have become a professionally model.

Somewhat a dandy, he knew how to dress for an occasion.

At school in Zimasa Higher Primary School, he always won the Mr Beauty and Mr Personality pageants.

Whenever he strutted the catwalk, the crowds went into a frenzy, what with showcasing his superb talents as a dancer and a natty dresser.

Most whistled his name while the lasses purred and blew their kisses at him, squealing in a lascivious manner of sorts.

As is always the case, there were always contenders to Cyril’s throne, but they came out the worse for wear.

Once, a fellow competitor took to the stage and instead made himself a stooge by emulating Cyril; he shouldn’t have, for the house came down with such uproarious laughter. The cat was out of the bag for him, being no match for our Cyril.

Needless to say, he ended being a runner up to Cyril’s title.

Besides his dancing style, Cyril was equally gifted as an acrobat, fitting because of his lithe body. He turned his body to an instrument of pliability and great reflex.

A little known fact is that Cyril was arrested during the riots of 1976, and even spent a year in detention without trial.

Sadly, after his release he showed less interest in going back to school, and instead a career in music.

He played the piano as his instrument of choice.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Cyril played with a number of bands around Cape Town.

He had amassed so much experience that he and Ringo Madlingozi founded the band Peto, which became famous for their one hit, African Salad(umphokoqo).

Although the group split up, Cyril continued to nurture his craft further.

Musicians face various challenges in South Africa, including financially stress.

Because of this, Cyril studied and passed an electronics technician’s course.

That ensured that he was able to supplement his income as a musician, installing and repairing household appliances.

He was married to Thakane, who bore him three lovely kids. However the union broke down and the pair divorced.

This setback in his life came at great cost to him.

Despite these setbacks in his life, most admirable about him was that he never complained about those, but maintained a very happy and outgoing personality.

I last saw him at the funeral of a nephew and he was in his usual high self, and dressed to the nines.

As a parting short to my brother and a gifted musician, may the gods of heaven welcome you to the other dearly departed musos and gleefully offer you the soothing waters of Southern Comfort, to your throats desire.

DCAS and City honours athletes T

he Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Cape Town Sport Council and the City of Cape Town (CoCT) hosted the Cape Town Sport Awards at the Cape Town Civic Centre on 31 July 2017.

Athletes from across the city were awarded for their efforts in their respective sporting codes in 23 different categories. Richard Buckley, chairperson of the Cape Town Sport Council, welcomed guests and thanked all contributors for making the event possible.

The keynote address was delivered by the Director of Sport Development, Paul Hendricks. He gave guests some insight into the Department’s flagship Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme and the research conducted over 7 years regarding the tenthousand-hour rule. This alludes to the fact

that a child should be able to master a particular activity such as sport if he/she practises for ten thousand hours. Athletes who took part in the MOD programme have benefitted greatly with some now representing the province in international tournaments. He concluded by congratulating and thanking athletes for excelling in their respective sport codes.

The evening ended with the announcement of the winners of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year categories – this year these titles were awarded to Seabelo Senatla (Western Province Rugby) and Anzel Laubscher (Western Province Chess) respectively. Winners of the regional awards will be nominees at the Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards in September. Thereafter the winners of the Provincial Awards will be put forward as nominees for the South African Sport Awards.

Magwaca crowned in style Mzuvukile Magwaca won the WBA international bantamweight title when he beat Jose Gonzalez on points in East London last Friday. He won the 12-round bout at the Orient Theatre 116-112 on two cards and 116-111 on the third.Magwaca worked his way to a deserved victory, if not a particularly dominating one, taking his record to 17-1, including nine knockouts and a technical draw. Gonzalez dropped to 26-5, with 12 wins inside the distance.The two produced a grand-stand finish that had the spectators dancing in the aisles as Gonzalez threw everything at the new champion in the final round.The advantages of a superior reach was clear from the start as Magwaca kept the Mexican at the end of his jab and Gonzalez battled to get in close enough to do serious damage.Gonzalez switched from southpaw to orthodox halfway through the bout and clipped Magwaca with a few left hooks to the jaw every time the South African let his concentration slip.With veteran SA referee Stan Christodoulou providing a lesson in positioning to aspiring ring officials, the fight turned into an intriguing contest.

eachers and learners at Luleka Primary School are priding themselves after their soccer and netball teams achieve good results during the school holiday sports tournament, in Khayelitsha.

The District East/ Kraaifontein MOD Cluster Sport Festival was held at Bernadino Heights High School, in Scottsdene.

There were over 30 schools that took part in the competition.

Under 12 netball team walked away with silver medals after they secured position two and under-13 for netball team finished

on third position and got bronze medals.

Under 12 soccer team for boys came on third place and got bronze medals.

The Under 13 soccer team for boys could not proceed with in the competition as most players could not pitch-up for the selection game towards the end of the competition.

Ncumisa Gxono, teacher, said they caused a storm in their first appearance in the competition which started few years ago.

“This is the big achievement for the school. We are proud of our teams. We have dedicated teachers and learners in sport.

She also said the school is also doing well in other sport codes such as rugby, cricket and athletics.

Principal Thobani Mthoba said sport is good for taking children away from streets and it also helps to sharpen their minds.

“We are happy with what we achieved.

There were a lot of schools there, but we

managed to go that far. I would like to thank the parents for allowing their children to play,” he said.

Nathi Nyubatya, 12, captain for netball team, praised the support they got from their teachers and parents as the recipe for their good performance.

“We would like to thank our parents for allowing us to play and also the support from our principal. He buys us food and anything we need when we go and play,” Nyubatya said.

Linethemba Yiwa, 12, captain for soccer team, said communication in the field helped them to do well.
