outh from Khayelitsha, YouLead Warriors, walked away with a bronze at this year’s President Award for Youth Empowerment after completing an environmental task.

The Award is a Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in South Africa and is available to young people between the ages of 14 to 24.

The aim of the award is to empower young people by providing a stable non-competitive framework for self-development that

will raise their self-esteem and boost their ability to achieve in whatever context they find themselves. The award also strives to make young people become responsible and active citizens in their respective communities.

The award is the most inclusive of youth development programme in South Africa.

It is made up of three increasingly challenging levels which are the Gold level, Silver level and Bronze level. The participants are required to complete four sections at each level; voluntary service, skill, physical recreation and adventurous journey.

the award. “I’m overwhelmed because the award is what I wanted the most when I joined the programme,” he said.

He said there were challenges during the competition but he overcame them.

Maliza said he would encourage others to join the programme because they will learn a lot.

YouLead coordinator Athenkosi Baba said people who want to join the programme must be interested in climate change. He said they want more girls for the next intake and those who are interested need to at least have a 50% pass mark.

Clinic prepares for more pet casualties The festive season has officially started and so has the busiest and most difficult time at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic.

“Pets that are run over by cars skyrocket.

Pet abandonment shoots up. The numbers of injured and sick patients escalate,” says Marcelle du Plessis, fundraising and communications manager.

Queen is one of them. Being just under a year old she was one of the first festive season motor vehicle accident patients seen by the clinic at the start of November.

The clinic is a permanent, veterinary council registered, non-profit organisation (NPO) animal clinic in the area. It serves an average of 700 animals per month through

Clinic. People seem to drive more recklessly, knocking pets over. This results in severe injuries needing orthopaedic operations. One such operation costs us a minimum of R2 000,” says Du Plessis.

During the festive season, many Khayeliltsha community members go to the Eastern Cape to visit their families leaving their animals behind with friends. Very regularly these friends do not have experience in looking after animals. Their homes are not always equipped for animals – they get out of the yard, end up in dog fights or get hit by vehicles.

“We receive many animals that have fallen sick due to insufficient nutrition or nonpet friendly living conditions. During this time we cover all their costs as owners are not around to donate a small amount towards their pet’s treatment. Very often, these pets are not collected when their owners return home,” says Du Plessis.

It is also common to find pet owners walking through Mdzananda’s doors handing pets over at this time of the year.

Khwezi children taught fire safety UNATHI OBOSE

I

n an effort to educate children about the danger of fires and how to prevent it, the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services hosted a fire awareness campaign at Lunar Crescent Park in Khwezi Park on Friday 6 December.

The event was organised by Khwezi Western Cape on Wellness (WoW) after two recent fires in the area. WoW is a healthy life style initiative initiated by the provincial department of Health to promote wellness.

WoW champion Unathi Yanta said the programme promotes safety in communities. “Now that schools are closed and it’s festive season people are having fun and braaing until midnight which is dangerous.

And the children are the ones who are in

danger,” she said.

Yanta said they felt the programme was needed to empower children. She encouraged parents to keep items, such as match sticks out of reach of children.

Firefighter Tumekile Nazo said they teach children how to escape in an event of fire. “When the house or shack is burning we advise them to kneel down and crawl instead of standing. And if someone is burnt, they must first pour cold water on the wound and wait for few minutes before they treat it and then call an ambulance,” said Nazo.

He also urged parents to pack away items like paraffin and match sticks.

“Parents need to show children all the exits so they can escape when there is a fire,” he concluded.

GET TESTED: In commemoration of World Aids Day, observed annually on 1 December, premier of the Western Cape, Alan Winde lead by example, getting himself tested for HIV/Aids on Thursday 28 November. The test was conducted by provincial health minister, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo. The focus of campaigns run this year is to encourage communities to fight the epidemic. “Knowing your status will not only help you to access necessary health care if required, but will also allow you to take steps to ensure that you do not infect others.

The test today was quick and simple.

We need to remove the stigma around this disease by ensuring that testing for HIV is as routine as other health checks like having your blood pressure or blood sugar checked,” says Winde. Mbombo says the health department conducted 1.7 million HIV tests and started 41 318 new patients on treatment in the last financial year.

“A total of 87 846 residents belong to adherence clubs, which make it simpler for patients to collect their medication, and therefore remain on treatment. We cannot get complacent. Testing and treatment are key to us beating this disease.”

Shack turned into a studio SIYABONGA KALIPA

A

music studio run from a shack in Khayelitsha has produced a 10track album.

Walking into the shack, that has burglar bars, there is a bed and to the left a big computer screen, a laptop and a microphone.

Cape Peninsula University for Technology (CPUT) fourth-year education student Azola Xobiso (22) also known as D–Eyzho said he started making music in 2010.

The self-taught hip hop producer said he started out as a rapper before he moved to producing.

Xobiso said he had to save to start his studio, including holding on to change from his bursary.

He said his first work as a producer was an Extended Play (EP) in 2014.

It was followed by a mix tape in 2016.

Xobiso said his latest offering is a collaboration with other artists – a first for him.

“On my latest offering ‘Godly Wave’ which was done in my studio I worked with Parker Geech and it was the first time I worked on an EP with another person,” he said.

He said they went into the studio in August and it was released in November.

“Although I enjoyed working on this EP the biggest challenge was money. To start an album from scratch needs money,” he said.

Siyabonga Ntozini (27), also known as Parker Geech, said he liked working with Xobiso because they understood each other.

He said they shared ideas and there was no pressure on him.

Xobiso said the EP is available for R50 per copy and if one is interested they can contact him on 074 087 1194.

Backyarders and shack dwellers from ward 98 in Khayelitsha are eagerly waiting for new houses to be built. The installation of underground infrastructure is already underway.

At least 462 RDP houses are expected to be built at B Section for people earning less than R3 500 per month.

Ward 98 councillor Xolisa Peter described the development as a dream come true for many beneficiaries.

She stated that the installation of underground and other infrastructure will be completed in August next year. “Immediately after that, they will start the construction,” she said, adding it is the first time backyarders from the area will benefit from housing development.

“Since the establishment of Khayelitsha in 1984 backyarders were being marginalised. The Khaya Infill Housing Project will accommodate backyarders and some people from Tsepetsepe informal area which is part of ward 98,” she said.

Peter said they will prioritise elders and people with disabilities.

Khayelitsha Development Forum chair Ndithini Tyhido welcomed the development. He urged communities to work together. “We know in any development there will be some squabbles but people must not lose their focus of improving the conditions of their communities. It is our wish to see Khayelitsha with no backyarders,” he said.

Teen magicians honoured A

whirlwind year of theatre shows, charity outreach shows, and learning the art of magic culminated in the College of Magic’s Students of the Year Awards at Rondebosch Boys’ High School on Saturday 16 November.

Ruby Park and Sesona Gagana were named Cape Town’s most magical teens. The two students were honoured alongside their peers at two graduation ceremonies.

The Student of the Year trophy is awarded to the two students who have a record of excellence in performance and participation in college activities throughout the year.

Park (13) from Constantia, and one of only a few young female magicians, has captivated her instructors and audiences with her abilities at several contests, the winter school holiday programme, the 2019 Traditional Children’s Magic Festival, and as the co-lead of the college’s annual Artscape Theatre show this year.

Park says she loves creating performances. “I’ve worked so hard and it’s amazing to be recognised for it. The College of Magic provides so many opportunities to learn from the instructors and my fellow students and I look forward to the next phase of my

magical education.”

Clinching the 2019 Senior Student of the Year award is the pinnacle of Gagana’s final year at the college as he graduates from the Course Six year. An incredible all-rounder in magic and its allied arts, including juggling, puppetry and mime and clowning, this skilled 16-year-old performer from Makhaza, Khayelitsha represented the college and South Africa in the United States of America (USA) in 2018.

He was voted top street magic performer at the 2019 Western Cape Junior Magician Championships.

Gagana reflects on his time at the college: “Since joining the college in 2013, learning to be the best in all aspects of magic has been my motivation. Perfecting my art day by day, year by year, will help me achieve my dream of being a professional magician when I grow up. Receiving this award as I graduate is a huge honour.”

The graduations also honoured staff and this year’s recipient of the David Berglas Millennium Award for Outstanding Contribution to the College of Magic is Santika Naidoo, a graduate and volunteer instructor at the organisation.

Instituted in 2000 by David Berglas, the Millennium Award is presented each year to the person who has contributed significantly towards the college.

Naidoo, who directed the college’s annual magic extravaganza, the World of Magic!, at the Artscape Theatre in October, was recognised for her direction of the show, her generosity in donating her time, her dedication to the improvement of the college, her tireless efforts to promote and support young women in magic and assisting the college in the rollout of its new digital platforms and online communications.

“It’s been an incredible year of hard work and immense growth for me at the College of Magic and I thank them for the recognition,” says Naidoo.

The College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, will celebrate its 40th anniversary by welcoming a new generation of aspiring magicians in February 2020.

Jazz lovers in for a treat in Gugs This year’s Impilo Jazz Experience will take place at NY122 Park, Gugulethu on Sunday 15 December from 12:00. Settle your traffic fines

T

he popular traffic fines roadshow which is run by the City of Cape Town’s legal services department together with the City’s traffic service will return to the Cape Town Civic Centre for the final run this year.

The roadshow opened on Monday 9 December and will continue until Friday 13 December between 08:00 to 14:00.

A team consisting of administrative staff, prosecutors and traffic officers will be on the concourse level of the civic centre to assist motorists with their fines and/or warrants of arrest. The public will also have an opportunity to make enquiries about outstanding fines and to settle outstanding fines and warrants.

Prosecutors will be on standby to consider their representations and cashiers available to take payments in the settlement of fines.

“The purpose of the roadshow is to provide a convenient one-stop shop to the public to sort out their outstanding fines once and for all.

“I encourage motorists to take full advantage of the opportunity to clear their record, especially ahead of the upcoming holiday season when they find themselves on the road more frequently.

We believe these roadshows also provide an opportunity for open communication between the public and officials from the City’s traffic services and legal services,” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle.

Motorists are reminded to take along their identity documents and a copy of the fines and/or warrant for which they would like to make representations.

It is important to note that there will be no blanket reduction.

Each representation made will be considered on its own merits by prosecutors.

Christmas carols to usher in season It wouldn’t be the festive season in Cape Town without Carols at Kirstenbosch, the City’s much-loved carols event, and this year, it is taking place from today, Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 December.

Grab a picnic blanket, round up your friends and family and enjoy a wonderful evening.

Proudly hosted by the Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch and sponsored by Pick n Pay, the event will usher in the festive season with your favourite singalongs, delicious food and the beautiful sight of thousands of glowsticks lighting up the evening sky.

As always, Pick n Pay is offering to make your entire experience as hassle-free and as enjoyable as possible, so pre-order a perfect picnic for two, comprising a scrumptuous selection which will be ready when you arrive at the event.

There’s also a special picnic for the little ones.

The Pick n Pay food truck will be on site again this year, serving up mouth-watering options such as burgers, festive gammon rolls, and a tasty mushroom and brie burger with cranberry sauce as a veggie option.

In addition, there will be two coffee stations serving a selection of coffees and hot beverages; and a snack selection, including hot dogs, mince pies, cupcakes, crisps, chocolates and biltong.

Note that wine will not be on sale at the event, but visitors are welcome to bring their own.

Carols will be led by Cape Town Concert Brass and the Cape Town Male Voice Choir.

Set off the New Year with a bang T

he festive season is in full swing at the Baxter with three shows to choose from as the year-end celebrations kick in.

Nik Rabinowitz is now on in the concert hall until 14 December with his latest comedy Late Bloomer, the much anticipated Marc Lottering’s Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! has opened with a bang, and fresh from the veld is Ben Voss in Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature.

Nik ruminates over his recent DNA test results and a host of other pressing issues in his stand-up show, directed by Rob van Vuuren, as he tries to figure out who he is, where he came from, where he’s going to and how he ended up here.

Late Bloomer runs Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8pm and ends on 14 December.

Since its recent opening, Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! has been playing to packed houses and standing ovations. Marc once again teams up with director Lara Foot and a cast of 13, plus a live band of seven musicians, who sing and dance their way through the drama and goings-on between Belgravia Road, Athlone and Bantry Bay. If you loved the first production of Aunty Merle, The Musical, this sequel brings even more drama and surprises.

The cast includes Royston Stoffels, Jennifer Steyn, Nicky Rebelo, Carmen Maarman, Zoleka Helesi, Rushney Ferguson, Julian Place, Sizwesandile Mnisi, Anzio September,

Tashreeq de Villiers and Crystal Finck. The show runs until Saturday 1 February at 19:30 from Tuesdays to Saturdays, with matinees on Saturday at 15:00 and Sunday 22 December at 15:00. There will be no performances on 24 and 25 December and 1 January.

Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature is written by John van de Ruit (Spud) and stars Ben Voss, directed by Janice Honeyman.

It runs from today, Tuesday 10 December to Saturday 18 January in the Golden Arrow Studio at 20:15 nightly with Saturday matinees at 16:00. The comedy highlights the importance of nature conservation. It opened at the 2019 National Arts Festival Makhanda (Grahamstown) where Ben won two Standard Bank Ovation Awards and has continued receiving rave reviews and full houses.

The usually sold-out New Year’s Eve Bash will once again see some of the artists lead the countdown on Tuesday 31 December to get the revelry started as the fun continues in the foyer after the performances. Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! and Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature will both start later, on the night. Ticket prices will include entrance to the party.

Early booking for these shows and the New Year’s Eve celebrations are advised.

Tournament to honour legend SIYABONGA KALIPA

he community of Khayelitsha came out in numbers to support the inaugural girl’s soccer tournament held on Saturday 7 December, at Hopolang Combined School.

The tournament was hosted by Ikasi Soccer School, a coaching and talent development programme for young girls, in honour of Themba Jozana who mentored young soccer boys from the area.

Ntsodo said they coach girls from nine to 15 from four different schools including Lwandle, Kukhanyile and Eluxolweni primary schools.

He said they decided to host the tournament to remember their Jozana, who died in 2015.

Ntsodo said Jozana encouraged the boys to play soccer when they were growing up to stay away from all the bad things.

He said he would be happy to see that they are continuing to share their skills with young girls from Khayelitsha.

Ntsodo said he is happy with the progress the girls have made because they now know the basics of soccer and have developed also developed new skills.

Ntombizanele Jozana, wife of the late Jozama, said she had mixed emotions at first about the tournament. She said in the end she was happy to see that the boys her husband used to mentor are still continuing his work.

She said it is also a good thing what the young men are doing because they are keeping the youth away from the streets.

Lwandle Primary School’s u.12 girl’s team beat Hopolang Combined School 6-3 in the finals.

Lwandle Primary School’s u.14 girl’s team won against Kukhanyile Primary School 5-2.

Runaway success for Twilight Run Despite a howling Cape Doctor making an unwelcome appearance, thousands took to Cape Town city centre’s streets for the 37th edition of the Community Chest Twilight Run on Tuesday 3 December. Of the over 5 000 entrants, around 3 800 braved the wind to make the 2019 Twilight Run a great success. The overwhelming support from Capetonians and visitors alike for the gender-based violence theme enabled Community Chest to present cheques to two beneficiaries: The Justice Desk, represented by executive director Jessica Dewhurst, and The Social Makeover, represented by founder Farhana Parker. An additional special Siyakubona Award went to the Women Lead Movement, accepted by founder Melene Rossouw.
