DROUGHT: LOCAL PROJECT ASSISTS WITH WATER AS...
Day Zero looms large UNATHI OBOSE
U
Mmangaliso Primary School in Site B has received water bottles donated by Uyesu Unathi Project in a bid offset the effects of Day Zero. Learners were donated 40 five liters of water by the project. Raymond Xazana, the Chairperson of Uyesu Unathi Project, described the initiative as part of giving back to the community. He said they started the initiative last week at Injongo primary school in the area after it was reported that some learners had complained of ‘loose stomachs’. “ A fortnight ago, we heard that there were children with diarrhoea at the school. And when they were taken to the hospital, doctors suspected that it was caused by unsafe water... As a project, we decided to intervene and donate purified water to these two schools to avoid more diarrhoea,” said Xazana adding that some schools ordered learners to bring drinking water from home. He added that as a project they can’t stop drought but they believe they can stop diarrhoea. Xazana vowed to donate water every month to both of these primary schools till the drought subsided. “We are calling local business people or anyone who can afford to support us in this initiative to come forward. They can contact us if they want to contribute,” he pleaded. Phumla Nkewana, Deputy Principal at the school, expressed her gratitude to the members of the project and added that the water will make a difference to the school. “We will give them to Grade R learners. They are there one’s who always have a problem of diarrhoea. We suspect the water because we don’t have a chance to boil them here at school. And we are glad that we received purified water hoping that won’t cause any harm to them,” she said. Nkewana said they wished for a bore-hole but cited high costs. Grade 6 learner Luna Phendu,12, said she was grateful to the project.
