A

group of community activists will embark on a “guerrilla gardening walk” for the next seven days starting from Monday November 27.

Walking under the theme: #TheHandThatFeedsYouControlsYou, the activists, who belong to Ujamaa, hopes to raise awareness about the importance of planting food gardens and speak against crime.

“The national statistics released in 2017 indicate that 74 000 young black people died in the hands of other young people in the townships across the country. We believe that the ongoing self-destructive nature off the township existence is informed by the grinding dehumanising poverty that most people find themselves in,” said Ujamaa founder Inqaba Yamaqabimbola Omhlaba.

Omhlaba said they intend to highlight the need to start community gardens.

“Community members must start and maintain food gardens,” he said.

Reverend Tsakane Sibanda of the Church of the Nazarene, said through the walk they will make people realise that lack of space is not an excuse not to plant food gardens.

“In Harare we started a food garden in what was a dumpsite and we are growing nice vegetables there,” she said.

Sibanda said turning the dumpsite into a garden has helped young people to “connect with the land.”

“Ujamaa is a community based organization, it was born from the need to respond to socio-economic challenges. We work towards an alternative, self-reliant and communal socio-economic system,” she added.

She said they as Ujamaa re-imagine a society where there is enough for all.

“We envision an alternative communal society that critically engages its surroundings, living in solidarity and service to each other, sharing in the rhythms,” she added.

and educating communities about food gardening, water saving and waste management,” he said. Targeted communities include Mfuleni, Delft, Lavis Town, Bonteheuwel, Lagunya ugulethu and Khayelitsha.

Tambo legacy trampled on by ANC October 27 marked 100 years to the day Oliver Reginald Tambo was born.

Tambo was the longest serving ANC president ever, all of 25 years. His political activism began in 1933 after he and friends formed the Bizana Students Association in which he was elected secretary.

In 1942 while doing a Diploma in Higher Education at Fort Hare University, he was elected the chairman of the Students’ Committee of the Beda Hall residence. He was also expelled for leading students in a protests against arbitrary restrictions on the use of a campus tennis court.

When he was about to be ordained as a priest he was charged in the 1956 Treason Trial together with 156 of his comrades. Shortly after he left the country, the ANC was banned. Hailing from humble beginnings, he was trained as a teacher and taught mathematics. He and Nelson Mandela were the first generation of the ANC Youth League. Together with the likes of Sisulu, Peter Mda and Lembede they founded the ANC Youth League and radicalized the ANC, forcing it to adopt the militant 1949 Programme of Action.

Together with the Mandelas and Sisulus he was in the forefront of the Defiance Campaign and the Freedom Charter. That led to his arrest and eventual implication in the Treason Trial. Before the banning of political organizations in 1960, the ANC sent him

Report raises issues in the health sector MBONGISENI MASEKO

ealth Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on Monday made public a new report which highlights the right to health as the key to ending the Aids pandemic.

The UNAIDS Right to Health report makes clear that states have basic human rights obligations to respect, protect and fulfil citizens’ right to health.

The report gives a clear demonstration of the challenges that lie ahead in the efforts to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.

Michel Sidibé, the executive director of UNAIDS, also introduced Quarraisha Abdool Karim, the associate scientific director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, as UNAIDS Special Ambassador for Adolescents and HIV. Motsoaledi said the number of people who are now on treatment for HIV has reached about 21 million globally.

“We must do more to prevent new infection of HIV, which we want to reduce by 70% by 2020.

This struggle belongs to all of us, just like the one for Apartheid belonged to all of us.

In the next six years South Africa is going to spend about R6 billion on HIV,” he added.

He also said the issue of legalising of sex work is a “serious one” and that “we need to work together to help sex workers.”

He also encouraged males to circumcise to reduces the chances of contracting HIV/ AIDS. Motsoaledi also said the last few years have seen a decrease in babies born with the HIV in the country.

He said there were about 270 000 new infections every year in the country and 67% percent of the new infections were among young women and girls, aged between 15 and 24 years.

He said the study shows that most young women and girls contract HIV from older men.

The study also shows that men are reluctant to go for HIV testing and only 18% are more likely to access treatment and just 8% of men are likely to die from Aids-related illnesses than women.

Motsoaledi also said he is pushing forward with the National Health Insurance (NHI) and that he expects a “war” in parliament when he tables it in a few weeks time as some Members of Parliament are opposed to the motion.

Sidibé said: “Many people do not remember that in 2000 there were only 90 people in South Africa on treatment. Today, South Africa has the biggest life-saving treatment programme in the world, with more than four million people on treatment. This is the kind of acceleration we need to encourage, sustain and replicate,” Western Cape MEC for Health, Professor Nomafrench Mbombo- answering questions about the shortage of staff and the long waiting period for some patients to get help in health facilities- said they were aware of the challenge and that the department was finding ways address these.

Dyadoni said sex workers become reluctant to go to public clinics because “there is too much stigma” around them and that they “feel uncomfortable” to go there.

“There are a lot of sex workers in all the communities. Some people get gifts in exchange for sex, but they are not even aware that doing so is sex work on its own. Sex workers are responsible for their health,” he added.

Culprit refused child’s food, ‘burns’ down house MBONGISENI MASEKO A family was left homeless after one member- who is allegedly a drug addict- set their house on fire, last Sunday in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.

Nozipho Gaga, 38, accused her younger brother as the man behind the fire.

The incident took place on Sunday night.

Gaga said her troublesome brother has threatened to burn the house down several

times in the past.

“The fire started in his bedroom. He always sees us as flies when he is high on drugs. He is a trouble maker. We do not have a home now. We are not happy at all. We do not even know his whereabouts ever since that night.

We need help, because we do not have the means to rebuild the house. We lost everything we had in the flames. It is going to be a bleak Christmas for us,” Gaga said.

There are eight members of the family who

were affected.

Gaga also said her brother served some time in prison for a case which he does not want to reveal to anyone, in 2006.

“He did not want to sleep with lights off after he came back from prison. We once obtained a court interdict against him around 2012, because we were not happy about his conduct,” she said.

“He would threaten to burn the house

down when I tell him to stop eating my child’s food.

He is a nuisance,” Sisanda said.

Banetsi Mphunga, registered psychologist and family friend, said they asked residents in the area to donate at least five bricks each to help rebuilding the house.

Sisanda Gaga said her uncle would get angry when she told him not to eat food meant for her child.

former hot spot for caffeine lovers in Khayelitsha, the Department of Coffee has been forced to close.

This follows a burglary six months ago which left the coffee shop stripped bare.

“They took everything – all our coffee machines, equipment, everything that was in the shop,” said barista Wongama Baleni.

This was not the first time the coffee shop, which is located opposite the Khayelitsha train station, has been burgled.

In 2013 burglars stole two tills and a computer, but not the coffee machines.

Baleni said the business has been battling to recover.

He said that safety was a big concern at the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) area where the shop has its premises.

VPUU’s work stream leader Don Shay said, “There was a stage where paid security watched the building.

They are no longer there. It was a com-

pany the City of Cape Town paid for. But, there is a neighbourhood watch group that is active there, but it’s not a 24-hour arrangement.”

“Khayelitsha is a dangerous area.

There are safety and crime challenges in the neighbourhoods where VPUU operates,” said Shay.

Baleni said they have not given up.

They have started running a mobile coffee shop outside the Khayelitsha Mall.

They are using just one coffee machine. They have also started a crowdfunding campaign to buy coffee machines.

“So far so good in terms of the crowdfunding campaign. We are getting amazing support.

We are hopeful that we will eventually be able to reopen and operate from our shop again, because business that side was great compared to here.

Also, our coffee shop was close to the train station so we had many customers old and new. But we will see how everything goes,” said Baleni.

schools from across the country to have made the cut to the finals of the awards.

The awards were presented by Sports Minister Thulas Nxesi whose department had worked with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), to organise the event.

The school received a R10 000 cheque just for being nominated in the category.

y being nominated for the South African Sports Awards 2017 was good enough to raise the spirits for a Khayelitsha primary school, even though they did not get to lift the trophy.

Teachers and learners at Ikhwezilesizwe Primary School, from E Section, said they were very proud for being one of three

squad.

Norma Mayeye, the school principal, said the nomination was powerful enough to send them to cloud nine as it showed that their dedication for playing even in the absence of proper equipment and facilities, has borne fruit.

“We were honoured to be in the list for the national top three schools that made it to the ffinals.

This was across all sporting codes. It is a dream comes true for us. We see ourselves as stars of the nation. We are following the name of our school. We always clean when we play regardless of competing with privileged peers,” Mayeye said.

Akhona Mlambo, the school’s hockey coach, said their determination in the sport has paid dividends.

“Our players are self-driven and they have the passion for the sport.

We do not have resources, but we do not use that as our stumbling block in our way to success.

We use an old tennis field to play hockey and our learners do not have specialised equipment for the sport. They cannot afford to buy the expensive equipment. We are very happy,” Mlambo said.

Mayeye, Mlambo and Olwethu Mafutha, the captain of the team, were warmly welcomed by teachers and a group of learners at Cape Town International Airport on Monday.

Mafutha said: “Our school is now shining in the country. I got a chance of rubbing shoulders with Olympic champion Caster Semenya. She encouraged us to continue playing the sport.

I want to go places with hockey. As a captain, I have to set a good example and also to ensure that my teammates are disciplined and have respect for our opponents,” he said.

Semenya walked away with people’s choice award, for which she was selected with Luvuyo Manyonga, Wayde van Niekerk, Kagiso Rabada and Chad le Clos.

Housing development on point MANDLA MAHASHE

T

he City of Cape Town said it had earmarked funds to provide basic services and sanitation for five informal settlements in Khayelitsha, for the next three years.

This was revealed during a feedback session organised by the Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba at the OR Thambo Hall in Khayelitsha on Friday.

Letsatsi-Duba gave her report back via a department official as she could not make it to the event. Deputy Minister of Housing Zoe Kota-Frederick stepped in for her to listen to issues raised by the public.

The department had previously hosted an imbizo in May, where residents raised issues of lack of housing, corruption in allocation of RDP houses as well as crime.

Letsats-Duba said that the City had prioritised informal areas in Khayelitsha and that the elderly and the disabled are encouraged to register for housing opportunities.

“In addressing the allegations of corruption in the allocation of housing, the department, working with the municipality has linked the local housing list to provincial and the national databases to ensure that those who qualify for subsidy are selected and no one skips the queue,” she said.

She also noted that the department of social development has provided a report that indicates that it currently funds about 168 Early Childhood Development Centres in this community and these are run through NGOs. “Also, centres that are meant for treatment of substance abuse are situated in three different areas within Khayelitsha, including a Matrix Out- Patient Drug Treatment Centre in Khayelitsha Town 2 Commu-

In reference to community safety she said that a mobile police station was deployed in Site B and also noted that the Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s Skills Strategy, the Apprenticeship Skills Game Changer, a work placement programme, is designed to afford young people trades and other vocational and technical related skills and thereafter placement opportunities.

She also asked the residents to be active participants in the process of building a

prosperous society.

“As government, our work is to pull all strings to ensure that you receive the required service at the required level all the time and we need you to work with us in order to see this through. Help us to service you better, smarter and faster as entrenched in our manifesto and the Service Charter,” .

Kota- Fredericks lambasted the lack of economic opportunities for the residents in their respective wards.

“Every ward has a mandate to facilitate

economic development opportunities for their residents. We need this to be more impactful,” she told the crowds.

Nandipha Mphahlane from Site C complained that it was difficult for people to started early child care institutions.

“There is also a big problem of the elderly who are being robbed of their homes by people who buy them right under their noses.

Shack dwellers need proper sanitation because they now relieve them on the N2. We know its wrong but we have no choice,” she said.

‘Obesity is killing me after accident’ MANDLA MAHASHE A gogo from Kwa-khikhi hostels who claims to have been stuck in bed for more than five years after an accident says her weight has ballooned to such an extent as a result that she has become her own worst enemy.

Confidence Gxalaba, 62, said she was thrown off a bakkie in Gcuwa in 2010.

This, she says, was the beginning of her nightmare as she spent the next two years

being operated on and was sent from one hospital to another.

“After the accident my knee and hip was dislocated and I struggled to walk. To make things worse, the operation to fix my hip was not done long afterwards.

I became bedridden, and started to gain weight and now doctors say that they cannot operate on me because of my obesity.

I cant exercise because I can’t even sit up straight. Whenever I try, it is extremely painful and I don’t have a good diet,” she

said. Gxalaba stays in a shack with her husband and two caregivers.

Gxalaba complains thatv she is unable to do anything for herself and the difficulty of attending hospital.

“If I have to be moved, we must enlist the help of other men, because I am so heavy.

I am not well treated, all I do is eat and watch TV, I have given up hope,” she said.

She says she struggles in bad bad weather as she is locked in her shack all day long.

“On rainy days the waters drips to my

feet but I can’t even move them so I have to ask people to come help me.

When it’s hot I only have a small window so it gets too hot as well,” Gxalaba said.

She said that her dream is to receive a bigger and automated wheelchair as the one she has is too small for her.

She said she still hopes for her hip operation but sharp pains in her chest, stomach and her heart make her fear for her life.

“It feels like I have needles inside my body.”

Fairness and equality to opportunities means total freedom for all, and not just the chosen few.

I have been noticing the current trend regarding alcohol sellers/distributors.

Firstly, let’s put it on record that selling alcohol is legal in South Africa.

Of cause that legality comes with the conditions of the license.

In the townships, many liquor outlets and shebeens and taverns do not have the license to trade.

Most take part in this business to survive the economic downturn.

Alcohol is the most bought commodity in the country. Even well-established retailers are cashing in on alcohol.

They are even undercutting established taverners and shebeens in the townships.

It is never easy for local retailers to acquire licences.

But for the big retail stores it’s easier to get licenses as they have the financial muscle to meet all the “requirements” for trading.

And most of the time they come with such notions as claiming to create jobs for the poor.

I find this good but also hypocritical as our people can also be able to deliver on these and more if they can be given the same equal chances by the so called liquor boards.

When a township shebeen owner request a license, they are told about the high crime rate and high murder rate happening due to alcohol.

That excuse always lives me wondering if the alcohol sold in retail shops does not have the same effect.

The same liquor board always uses the community structures such as CPF’s to be the stumbling blocks for the local businesses.

CPFs now operate as fronters for the well-established retailers.

For example, in Philippi, construction of the Pick and Pay and Boxer liquor outlets have started and billboards are already up, championing this, yet locals who have requested for the same licences from the provincial liquor board are still knocking on closed doors, as far as receiving their own trading licences.

Even worse, their liquor is being impounded week in and week out.

Jazz in the Native Yard joints SPINDOG MOTSAMAI Flamboyant trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni is back in town.

Mlangeni will join forces with two of the Cape’s innovative musicians, bass player Bydon Bolton and percussionist Ronan Skillen in a vibrant performance this Sunday 26 November at Kwa Sec, NY 138 no. 52 Gugulethu from 4pm.

This unique improvisatory offering, which forms part of the Jazz in the Native Yards sessions is sure to excite the avid musical connoisseur.

Brydon Bolton is best known for his broody and pioneering improvisational forays in the Benguela.

Together with long time musical ally Skil-

len, who has long been exploring the fusion of tabla, percussion and didgeridoo by means of a hybrid percussion kit which he designed.

This ensemble is best described as trying to “develop music and sound forms that challenge idiomatic or conventional expressions” by Bolton. Nowhere more so than in this trio with Mlangeni and Skillen where the ensemble explore the interactions between composition and improvisation.

Expect intense and imaginative, spontaneous folkloric freestyle chamber sonicscapes, layered with jazz improvisation and pulsating beats.

Trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni is back in town..

ampondo are largely forgotten these days, but in their heyday, it is worth remembering that they had toured the world and recorded about 10 albums.

On Friday last week, the group received recognition after being awarded the Backing Vocalist and Session Musicians Awards at a ceremony held at the Soweto Theatre.

Amampondo is a group of marimba banging percussionists who entertained the world and South Africa in days gone by.

They were awarded the best percussionists between 1990 and 1995 rekindling memories of the time when these drummers where globetrotters.

Amampondo was founded in 1978 by Mzwandile Qotoyi, Simphiwe Mathole, Mandla Lande and Zandisile ‘Blacks’ Mbizela, with the late Victor Ntoni having been instrumental.

Qotoyi said: “I used got to the Langa Catholic Church and I was part of the band. When I was there, I saw that they were using the marimba, so one time I asked the conductor if the band members can remain after rehearsals.

We started a band and we started jamming and performing but one day we damaged the church equipment. The church sanctioned us and we had to buy our own equipment,” he said.

He said that they started busking and were able to buy their own equipment until the early 80s when they started performing in clubs.

“The turning point of the band was when we left for Jo’burg in the mid 80s, where we amazed crowds at the Market Theatre. They had never seen a marimba band perform live. They loved it so much they wanted us to stay another week,” said Qotoyi.

Opportunities started opening up and in 1988 they went on to perform in Scotland at the Edinburgh Festival.

“There, everyone loved us so much that our agent organised a world tour and we performed in countries such as Sweden, England, Holland, Germany, China, Australia and Italy.

This was also followed by an Americamn tour where we played in the North and South of that continent,” he said.

Zandisile Blacks Mbizela, another founding member, looked back with glee as he told of their favourite moments.

“In Canada we were so well received that we even left some of our equipment there so that we can play more often.

We used to stay with this old couple and one time we found that they were in the process of separating but our presence brought them back together,” he remembered.

He said they were very happy to be finally recognised while Qotoyi said there was still an interest in their music.

“We can go and perfom in Jo’burg if the situation allows, but these days we do private functions” he said.

They said they were happy to see that youngsters were interested in joining the marimba band and that they used the songs they composed as the basic education into making the music.

n Friday the Western Cape will witness an unprecedented move when 2 Professional Boxing tournaments will take place in the city.

One tournament will be in Hope Street, Cape Town, while the other will be taking place in the Wynberg Military base.

Both tournaments are sanctioned by BSA and the less than 10 officials that we have in the province will have to attend both tournaments.

The Wynberg tournament is hosted by Kalakoda Promotion and will have three WBF Africa title fights taking place.

The title fights will be for the Light Heavyweight and the Featherweight divisions.

The Main bout will see the unbeaten featherweight sensation, Thembani “Baby Jake” Mbangatha versus Mayihlome “Topper” Mjonono battling for the Vacant WBF Africa and Western Cape Featherweight titles.

Mbangatha has an unblemished record of seven fights

with no defeat and four of his wins were by knockouts, whereas Mjonono has fivefights with three wins and two defeats.

The main supporting bout will see the former MMA and Kickboxer Nickolas Radley facing Makhosonke Zwengu for the vacant WBF Africa Light heavyweight title.

Radley also has an unblemished 4 – 0 record with all his fights coming inside the distance while Zwengu has 18 fights and 12 loses.

The third title fight sees the flamboyant Chamunorwa “Sting” Gonorenda defending his WBF Africa title belt against DRC’s Tshanda Tshams. Sting has 21 fights and only 9 wins while Tshams only has 2 fights and 1 win.
