T

oday, Thursday 5 November, marks the start of the final examinations for the matric candidates, and school principals are optimistic.

Following months of academic disruption due the Covid-19 pandemic, City Vision spoke to principals in the Lwandle and Nomzamo areas about their views on this year’s examinations.

They told City Vision they were busy with the final touches to the curriculum in preparations for the National Senior Certificate exams. They all agreed the year was tough and they have had to adjust their pass rate targets.

However, despite all their efforts to complete the curriculum the principals said the time was simply not enough to cover everything. Another glaring challenge was the high number of drop-outs, they said.

Chris Mgubanto, Nomzamo High School principal, said his school had set out to cover the entire 2020 curriculum, and ensure all the assessments were complete. “We achieved all that but I can safely say we did not have enough time to revise.

“Remember, we had a long closure of schools after term 1 as a result of the lockdown. We saw that the long break had really affected our learners. Even in the trial exams we could see they did not do well, and we are under pressure and we can feel it.”

Mgubanto said everyone wanted to achieve a 100% pass, but they were realistically aiming for 70%.

“At the beginning of the year we were looking at 80%, and that was before the drop-outs, absentees and all the others challenges that followed. At the beginning of the year we had 152 learners, but currently we have 142 learners who will be writing their final examinations.”

Monwabisi Matshoba, principal of Simanyene Senior Secondary School, said Grade 12 teachers met on Tuesday 3 November to look at interventions to help the learners.

“Before learners can write any subject, especially those that are a challenge to them, teachers will meet and try to assist them,” he

Eric Titipana, principal of Khanyolwethu Secondary School. said. “They will identify the problems and also better prepare them for certain exam questions, by looking at those of previous years” A total of 238 learners are set to write the exams at the school, compared to 248 learners registered at the start of the year.

Matshoba said Simanyene was also targeting a 70% pass rate, down from the initial 85% at the start of the year.

Khanyolwethu Secondary School principal Eric Titipana said the school had done everything to prepare its learners.

Yesterday, Wednesday 4 November, learners visited the school for the last time to view their seating arrangements. A miniprayer for the learners was also organised by the school .

“We managed to have tutoring and virtual tutoring in preparation for the exams,” Titipana said.

He said the school was projecting a 80% pass rate, with a fall-back of 75%.

The school has 196 learners to write the exams compared to the initial 208.

ight Western Cape areas, have been named in the top 30 gender-based violence (GBV) hotspots in South Africa.

For months now, president Cyril Ramaphosa has been addressing the topic in his national addresses. In his September address on moving the country to alert level one, Ramaphosa indicated that the government had compiled a list of gender-based violence hotspots which would receive attention and intervention.

This list, which was published by police minister Bheki Cele on Tuesday 22 September, includes Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Kraaifontein, Mitchell’s Plain, Delft and Bellville. Cele revealed that of the 4 035 arrests during the lockdown, only 130 had been convicted.

This translates to a mere 3% conviction rate nationwide.

In the Western Cape, 1 093 arrests were made, linked to 534 cases since the start of the national lockdown in March.

Minister for community safety Albert Fritz explains that the use and serving of protection orders is vital in the fight against GBV and domestic violence.

“An interim protection order provides proof that the victim followed the steps for the incident/s of domestic violence to be reported. Once the order is made final, and the respondent contravenes the conditions of the order, the police must arrest the respondent,” he says. “A protection order is an order issued by a court ordering a person with whom one has or has had a domestic relationship to stop the abuse.”

Victims of abuse are encouraged to seek help from organisations which has been established to assist.

These organisations include Mosaic and the Saartjie Baartman Centre, among others.

Earlier this year, in the first month of the lockdown, provincial social development minister Sharna Fernandez announced upgrades and expansion of services to victims of abuse during the lockdown, with several centres prepared for a possible influx of cases.

Sonday encourages victims to speak out.

The network offers support groups and advice to victims, a process that, although affected due to Covid-19 protocols, continue to assist.

“You are not alone and, most importantly, it’s not your fault. Don’t feel ashamed or scared to reach out. There is help,” she says.

“It is never too late to take that first step to claim your rightful space, you have a purpose, you have potential and you have the power to change your circumstances.”

Speed fencing project aims to curb spread In an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19, the City of Cape Town has launched the speed fencing initiative, installing temporary fencing at public transport interchanges (PTIs) across Cape Town.

“The speed fencing initiative provides a form of access control at the PTIs and allows us to screen commuters before they enter the facility and proceed with their travelling,” says the City’s Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase.

The decision was made based on the local demand for public transport which is used by thousands of around Cape Town.

Purchase adds that the virus is still very much alive and real.

“As such, the City is trying its very best to create awareness of Covid-19 symptoms among commuters at the PTIs and to create a safer public area for all,” Purchase explains.

Nomzamo, Somerset West, Mfuleni, Nyanga central, Nyanga Junction and Pa­row are the communities who have already received the fencing.

Plans are currently under way to also install fences at Bellville, Kuyasa, Philippi, Claremont, Kuils River, Lentegeur, Durbanville, Fish Hoek, Retreat, Maitland, Athlone, Blackheath, and Mitchell’s Plain.

Purchase wants residents to be aware that, despite the temporary fencing to mitigate the spread, Covid-19 safety protocols are still in place.

“I want to remind commuters to please keep on wearing face masks when in public, to continue washing and sanitising hands often, to practise social distancing, and to avoid commuting when they do not feel well.

By working together, and taking responsibility for our health and safety, we can stop the spread of the virus,” she says.

2 cops killed in less than 7 days MZWANELE MKALIPI A 43-year-old man is languishing in custody after stabbing an off-duty police officer to death in Nomzamo on Saturday 31 October.

Sgt Sibongile Teka (34) was stabbed to death in Michael Street, around 20:00.

Lwandle Community Policing Forum (CPF) expressed sadness and shock over Teka’s untimely death.

“Sibongile was attached to Strand Police Station, but resided in Nomzamo,” said CPF chair Siyabonga Macaula. “Although we don’t know much about the incident, it is said there was an altercation that had broken out, resulting in his being stabbed to death.”

He condemned the killing: “The brutal killing of our police officials cannot be tolerated in our society. We kindly appeal to Lwandle police to bring the perpetrator to book speedily so they can face the law. We further appeal to community members to assist police with information regarding this incident.

is one too many, and we will also appeal to our justice system to oppose bail,” Macaula said.

Lwandle police spokesperson Sgt Mthokozisi Gama said the station had received reports earlier that day that the suspect and victim were in an altercation. “After the discovery of Sgt Teka’s body, Lwandle police followed-up on vital information that led them to the suspect,” he said, “who was subsequently arrested and the murder weapon seized.”

The accused appeared at Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday 2 November, and was remanded in custody until his bail hearing on 16 November. He is currently at Pollsmoor prison.

Teka’s murder is the second police killing in less than seven days. On Wednesday 28 October, off-duty officer Const Khanyisa Stofile (29) was ambushed by unknown gunmen while sitting with two friends in a car in Oliver Tambo Road, Samora Machel. He died at Lentegeur hospital.

Bookings for City’s resorts are open L

ocals who are sick of staring at the inside walls of their homes can breathe a sigh of relief as bookings into the City of Cape Town’s resort areas opened on Monday 2 November, with availability from Tuesday 1 December.

With bookings usually opening on 1 September, this significant delay could be attribu­ted to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement from the City of Cape Town, it was explained that limits will be placed on the number of guests who will be allowed at each resort.

“Early booking is essential as resorts will also only be booked to a 50% capacity.

Unfortunately, camping sites will be closed due to the health risks,” the statement read.

The Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien said upon consideration of recent medical research regarding Covid-19, City resorts will require guests to bring their own bedding and towels to mitigate the risk of contracting the virus.

“The virus can remain viable for up to 72 hours on plastic and stainless steel. It is, therefore, recommended that a gap of at least five days is left between bookings of chalets. This would allow for sufficient cleaning time and ventilation of the chalet,” he says, adding that all non-essential items will be removed from rooms.

According to the City, staff will be on-site at communal areas to attend to the continuous cleaning and sanitising.

Covid-19’s psychological impact SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS

T

he Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown have been tough on many, and mental health has taken significant strain.

But despite the global pandemic, putting your mind at ease could be just a few simple steps away.

Access Consciousness, the movement which incorporates various tools and techniques to empower people to help themselves, is now available to everyone and methods can be applied without assistance.

These pragmatic well-being tools were developed by Gary Douglas, the founder of Access Consciousness, in 1991. Since then, Access Consciousness has expanded into over 170 countries, has been translated into more than 30 languages, and has contributed to changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

“In the beginning Access Bars was all that was offered by Access Consciousness. To this day it remains the foundation and core of all tools of Access Consciousness. Access Bars is offered in a one-day class facilitated by Bars facilitators all over the world, including in South Africa,” says Dialina Baumann of the organisation.

The Bars which form part of the Access Bars approach are 32 unique points on the head that correlate to different areas and aspects of life. “During an Access Bars session, a practitioner gently touches these points to release the electromagnetic charge of all thoughts, ideas, attitudes, decisions, and beliefs that may have limited you in the concerned life areas,” says Baumann.

During the pandemic, a month-long wellness and support initiative was launched from World Suicide Day on Thursday 10 September to World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10 October.

Access Bars is a method that uses various pressure points in the head to treat stress and other ailments.

The pandemic has revealed a mental health crisis. According to a recent online survey on mental health during the lockdown, conducted by The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), lockdown has affected many South Africans, and it has had a serious impact on people living with a mental health issue. Sadag reported that they had also been receiving calls from people with no prior history of anxiety or depression who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and stressed as a result of the pandemic.

But South Africans are not alone. The lockdown has drawn attention to a global crisis due to the prolonged effects of isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing climate of uncertainty and fear, says the organi-

sation. According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, nearly half of Americans reported the Coronavirus pandemic was harming their mental health, and online therapy provider Talkspace reported a 65% jump in users since February.

“The amount of fear, anxiety and depression that is happening in the world right now due to this pandemic is devastating to witness. We have thousands of inspiring stories and testimonials from facilitators who have experienced immense relief after undergoing an Access Bars session, and we wanted to find a way to show people that there is hope in the world and that there can be relief for this feeling of despair. We want people to know that they are not alone and that they are a gift, with

something unique to offer the world,” says Access Consciousness co-creator Dr Dain Heer in a statement.

Stormers wear their support T

he DHL Stormers have shown their support for breast cancer and testicular cancer awareness by wearing a special logo on the sleeve of their match kit until the end of this month.

The logo is a combination of the traditional pink ribbon used for breast cancer awareness and blue “Movember” moustache which signifies testicular cancer awareness.

Globally, two million cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year.

The diagnosis has an indescribable emotional impact on every patient, but also on friends, family and colleagues.

To support the various initiatives, DHL, who are the Stormers’ title sponsors, are seeking to extend the awareness to the greater public and have placed decals on their aircraft fleet in Africa (and across the globe) with the ribbon creative to show their support and commitment to the causes.

Both causes have been integrat-

ed into the Stormers’ match day playing kit for the duration of the season in October and November, displaying the pink and blue logo.

Stormers captain Siya Kolisi said the team is proud to be raising awareness for such worthy causes.

“Breast cancer and testicular cancer are major health issues and we as a team want to do everything we can to show our support for this campaign, along with our sponsor, DHL,” he said.

Stormers coach John Dobson said the values behind this awareness campaign reflect what the Stormers players and management would like to be about as a team.

“It is great to be so closely aligned with our title sponsor DHL for such an important campaign. This is about showing concern for the well-being of others and doing everything we can to limit the impact of breast cancer and testicular cancer, so we are glad to be supporting in whatever way we can,” he said.
