MAXIMISE YOUR ENGINE PERFORMANCE WITH DIESEL 1000 Protect your fleet and maximise fuel economy with DIESEL 1000 fuel additive from TruckTEC he demands on the modern-day fleet are higher than ever. In an industry that operates on exceedingly tight margins, a missed delivery deadline due to unexpected vehicle maintenance or downtime can have devastating consequences to an organisation’s bottom line. Frequent day and night transit means vehicles are in demand practically 24 hours per day for the majority of the week. Even with the latest advancements in vehicle technology, the pressures placed on engine components can be immense. One such essential component that lies at the heart of every truck engine is its fuel injection system. A common issue affecting this system is the use of varying poor quality fuel, which can lead to increased emissions, diminished fuel economy, a loss of engine power and cause premature wear to today’s common rail fuel injection systems. When poor quality fuel finds its way into the engine, whether the operators is aware of it or not, the gumming of components, a reduction in the service life of filters, as well as total engine failure are all likely outcomes.

T

Introducing…DIESEL 1000 To safeguard against these issues, TruckTEC fuel additive DIESEL 1000 has been designed to carry out multiple functions that provide improved fuel quality and an array of cost savings for the modern-day transport organisation. At a treat rate of 1000:1 and available in 6 sizes DIESEL 1000 is cost effective for owner, driver, small fleet operators and national commercial fleets. Benefits include: • Improved engine performance

6

The extremely high pressure and temperature environment of modern engines places thermal stress on fuel, which can cause it to ‘coke’ or break down. This forms Internal Diesel Injector Deposits (IDID) which accrue on the internal injector components. As these injector components run at such tight tolerances, even a seemingly minor build-up can lead to sticking and an interruption of the fuel flow. This causes diminished power, decreased fuel economy and has an overall detrimental impact on the condition of the engine. The addition of DIESEL 1000 into a fuel tank can prevent and remove the build-up of IDIDs on internal components to prevent against this loss of power and can even restored lost power due to fouled injectors. • Reduced fuel consumption Following rigorous testing during research and development, the addition of the DIESEL 1000 fuel additive has been proven to streamline fuel consumption and improve engine power in both light and heavy-duty vehicles. With fuel one of, if not the, most significant expenses for organisations operating in the transport sector, optimising fuel consumption can represent massive financial savings when extrapolated across an entire fleet. Specially designed for constant use fuel dosing, DIESEL 1000 is ideal for operators that require frequent and sustained engine operation, such as is common in the road freight and logistics industry. • Lowered maintenance costs and extended lifespan By helping the engine to run smoother and preventing the build-up of harmful material such as IDIDs through the use of DIESEL 1000, fleet operators can make significant cost

savings over the vehicle’s lifetime through the reduction in maintenance costs required. By providing constant lubrication, DIESEL 1000 has been scientifically proven to extend the life of engine components by eliminating the degradation of the fuel injection system over time. By stopping filter plugging and protecting against the build-up of steel corrosion, operators can maximise the return on their investment and protect their fleets in the long term. • Increases cetane rating Using diesel fuel with too low of a cetane rating means rougher running and inadequate engine power. By raising the average cetane rating of all the individual components of the diesel fuel, the addition of DIESEL 1000 increases the overall cetane rating of the fuel, which in turn allows the fuel to be burned more quickly, vastly improving engine power and responsiveness. Compatible with the latest generation of catalytic converters, urea injection systems, particulate filters and other exhaust treatment technologies, DIESEL 1000 is suitable for use with all types of diesel fuels including ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and Bio-Diesel. Engineered by expert fuel chemists, DIESEL 1000 fuel additive from TruckTEC is the obvious choice for the forward-thinking fleet manager in today’s modern commercial transport market. ickup Racing Championship leader Lea Wood, TruckTEC Parts ambassador, gave his title hopes a massive boost with two second place finishes, each by only 0.17 secs. With Wood and defending Champion Scott Bourne only 0.617 secs apart after the first qualifying session, there was already a strong pointer to just how close the racing would be. Although Wood was quickest in the first qualifying session, Bourne just pipped him in the second, by only 6/1000ths. “We hadn’t raced Pickups at Thruxton for a few years, but it was flat out for nearly the whole lap. But it was so hot this time we knew it would be serious on tyre choice, so we opted to use old tyres, rather than risk blistering new ones,” said the Hereford driver. He started the first race from fifth on the grid as the top six qualifiers get reversed, with Bourne just in front. On the opening lap he had already gained two places and slotted in behind Pete Stevens and Mark Willis, as the top four ran nose to tail. A lap later he was in third, as both he and Willis ousted Stevens from the lead and started to make a slight break. “We weren’t really working together, but Mark defended very well. I managed to get a good run through Church though on lap four and got ahead up Woodham Hill,” he added. Bourne made his challenge on the next lap, taking Willis and closing down the gap to Wood’s lead to 0.520 secs. The race was on and Bourne began to pile the pressure on, which initially Wood repelled. “He was getting really close and then I got a wiggle on exiting Goodwood and he got me,” Wood explained.

“I was right on him on the last lap at the chicane and was hoping to try the cut back, but he slowed it down and cut me off.”

ISSUE 19 - OCTOBER 2018

There were two laps to go and all to play for and Wood came back to challenge again. “I was right on him on the last lap at the chicane and was hoping to try the cut back, but he slowed it down and cut me off,” he added. So it was second place by 0.170 secs, but both were over seven seconds clear of third placed Willis, with Wood also taking the points for fastest lap. Starting the second race from fifth again, he was able to close in on Bourne once more, having demoted Paul Tompkins exiting Church on the second lap. Bourne was battling to take second from David O’Regan when Wood moved in. He was through on lap three, with Wood following a lap later, to resume their duel. As in race one only Willis lay between them and a duel for the win. “Mark had just gone off from the start, but Scott and I worked together and soon caught him again. They both got by on lap seven and ran almost side by side for rest of the race. “I tried one move on the penultimate lap, then dropped away a bit to wind myself up for the final challenge. I tried the outside but he hung me out and crossed the line so close again,” he concluded after the gap was measured at 0.171 secs. Krysty Sheard, CV Marketing added: TruckTEC are thrilled with another great performance from Lea Wood and his team picking up another weekend of podium finishes. “We had a good feeling about sponsoring Lea Wood in the Pick-up Truck Racing Championship, highlighting our range of light commercial vehicle parts with the right ambassador was key for us - after speaking with Lea we knew the team would do a fantastic job at representing our brands (G-TRUCK, UAN TRUCK, TruckTEC and Top Truck).

or the whole of the Donington Park weekend there was little to separate TruckTEC Parts ambassador and Hereford driver Lea Wood from reigning Pick-up Racing Champion Scott Bourne and David O’Regan. There was oil down as they set out for the first qualifying session from the previous formula, but as the chequered flag came out Wood was second quickest to O’Regan, by only 0.146 seconds, while the top four were covered by 0.545 secs. “It is fairly unusual to be so close at Donington, but it was an indication of how close we were going to be in the races,” said Wood. Starting from fifth on the grid for race one due to the reverse qualifying, Wood was quick to get on the attack. “Michael Smith opened the gap going into Redgate, so I followed him through and came out second,” he explained. Initially Lee Rogers and O’Regan were close too, but it was O’Regan on the move, leading from lap four, with Wood challenging Smith for second, as he had Bourne threatening too. “I was not really working with Scott, but I opened the holes and he tended to follow me through,” said Wood, after they both took Smith through Redgate on the seventh lap. As the top three all began to close up, Wood made his bid for the lead, but was still defending from Bourne, as only 0.495 seconds covered all three. With two laps to go, Wood was ahead at Redgate and again Bourne followed. O’Regan got back into second but it all came down to the last lap. “All through Hollywood, the Craner Curves and the Old Hairpin O’Regan

was on me, we had contact at McLeans and he tried to dive down the inside but it did not stick, with Scott trying to go around the outside of us both. I got a good exit through Coppice heading onto Starkey’s Straight and kept both behind me but caught the first kerb through the Esses and lost a little bit of momentum. Scott got back inside to take an extremely close win, but I was still second,” he explained. Starting fourth on the grid for race two, hopes were high of further success, and we were not disappointed. It was a lightning start and as they arrived at Redgate. Wood had the lead. “I took the outside line and then it was head down and keep constant,” he said. The lead was starting to grow when the safety was called out. But after three laps the green flag was out and he timed his restart to perfection. “Michael Smith was the only one who went with me. It was back to the old BTCC restarts, backing them up into the chicane and ready to go at the flag and it worked well,” he added. As Smith’s challenge started to fade, the lead began to grow, with Bourne back into second. By lap 10 the lead was up to 4.580 secs, before Bourne made a brief response. “I just set a comfortable pace and was able to back off at the end and still win by over seven seconds, also securing fastest lap of the race. A great weekend with a healthy handful of points as we head to Lydden Hill in a month’s time,” Wood concluded. Wood still leads the overall Championship. EASY HOUSING CLEANING THANKS TO INNOVATIVE MANN-FILTER AIR FILTER nternational filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL has introduced a new air filter for commercial vehicles under its MANN-FILTER product brand. The most striking feature of the new air filter is the sealing lip at the lower end plate. MANN+HUMMEL has already started series production of the highly efficient air filter for a commercial vehicle manufacturer. The new filter is available in original equipment quality in the independent automotive aftersales market for different Scania NCG trucks as the MANN-FILTER C 25 024.

I

Easy servicing The air filter is changed by pulling the filter upwards out of the housing, releasing an opening at the bottom of the housing. If the filter housing is so badly soiled that it needs to be rinsed with water, the impurities can simply drain through this opening. The new filter is inserted with the help of a mechanical guide to ensure that it is securely seated in the correct position. “In order for the air filter system to be tight again during operation, we developed a sealing lip in the bottom end plate of the MANN-FILTER C 25 024 air

“The innovative air filter offers good water stability, a separation efficiency of 99.9% with ISOcertified test dust, and a dirt holding capacity of up to 2.2 pounds of particulate matter.”

filter that seals the dirt discharge opening,” said Pascal Neef, Engineer in Automotive Aftermarket Air Filters at MANN+HUMMEL. The Ludwigsburg company has registered a patent with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office for this connection between the end plate and housing. The innovative air filter offers good water stability, a separation efficiency of 99.9% with ISO-certified test dust, and a dirt holding capacity of up to 2.2 pounds of particulate matter. A spiral wound strip ensures grip protection through its tight winding in the upper filter area. It also stabilizes the folds to prevent them “packeting” (clumping together in a block) during operation so that the full filter surface area is maintained. The metal-free filter element means that the new C 25 024 is completely incinerable, and thus permits environmentally friendly disposal. You can find a new video showing how to clean the housing of the new C 25 024 air filter in comparison with conventional air filters on the MANN-FILTER YouTube channel at https://goo.gl/JAKb8b For more information: www.mann-hummel.com

FROM AN ENTHUSIAST TO A MARKET LEADER: 30 YEARS OF LUMAG he automotive industry is one of the sectors shaping Polish economy. Companies based on domestic capital excel at manufacturing buses, semitrailers and automotive components, often becoming leading players in their market segments. A case in point is Lumag from the town of Budzyń in the Wielkopolska region - a company manufacturing friction materials - which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its operation this year. During these three decades, from a company started by an enthusiast entrepreneur, it grew into one of the leaders of the Polish brake pad industry and today it exports over 80% of its production to over 40 countries around the world. Among other factors, the dynamic growth of the company was possible owing to investment exceeding two hundred and fifty million PLN. The findings of the report entitled “How many Polish genes are there in the Polish automotive industry?” published last year by the Industrial Development Agency, PKO BP bank and the Institute for Market, Consumption and Business Cycles Research indicate that the automotive sector accounts for 8% of the Polish GDP and as much as 13% of total exports. As a result, right behind food production, it is the second largest industry along the Vistula. Its basis is formed by Polish manufacturers who have been developing their companies step by step throughout the years, with time becoming leaders of their respective market segments. An excellent case in point is Lumag from the Wielkopolska region, specialising in the manufacture of friction materials, which are the most important components of brake pads. The company was founded in 1988 and initially focused on the manufacture

T

18

of brake linings for drum brakes. Over subsequent years it expanded its operations, implementing and developing its own in-house brake pad manufacturing technology. Today the company portfolio consists of brake pads and brake linings for commercial vehicles (Lumag brand) and brake pads for passenger cars and commercial vehicles (Breck brand). Over its 30 years of operation the company manufactured well over 100 million brake pads. The weight of the friction material used for this purpose exceeds 87 thousand tonnes, which is the

equivalent of over 50 thousand passenger cars. Marek Żak, Founder and President of Lumag said: “I started as a car enthusiast, believing that components made in Poland can feature European quality, offering drivers high-level of comfort and safety. In 30 years on the market we have managed to reach a strong position and become one of the largest companies based entirely on Polish capital which operate in the automotive industry. But we are not stopping at that, as the foundation of our strategy is constant growth. That is the reason why we are always working on extending our product offering. A prime example of that development is the investment project we are currently implementing, whose worth exceeds 30 million PLN. After its completion we will manufacture all components for the manufacture of complete brake pads. This will allow us to take an important step towards our goal of significantly extending the range of our OE products.” For more information: 0121 520 1160, office@lumagltd.co.uk or www.lumagltd.co.uk

THE HEART OF THE WATER PUMP PREMIUM QUALITY WATER PUMPS FROM BORG & BECK ith a 100-year heritage, Borg & Beck is a global supplier of Commercial Vehicle (CV) components and an established brand within First Line Ltd. The CV programme offers distributors a comprehensive range of brake discs, pads and drums, steering, water pumps, air and electrical coils, and rotating electrics offering, a credible alternative to OES. The ever-popular range of Borg & Beck CV water pumps offers more than 65 references, covering a wide range of the UK’s CV applications such as; Iveco, DAF, Volvo, Renault, Mercedes, Scania and MAN. Amongst these are high demand references like Iveco EuroCargo (Borg & Beck reference BWP32685), Scania P/G/R/T Series (BWP32682), Mercedes Atego (BWP32687) and Renault Magnum BWP32689. At the heart of the water pump lies the key component - the Dynamic Seal Pack. This unit contains both the bearing, which supports

W

20

the load on the shaft allowing the pump run at optimum efficiency; and the mechanical seal, which ensures coolant loss is kept to an absolute minimum. Despite being a small component and concealed within the casing, it is the most important element of a quality water pump. The seal has two contacting faces, one stationary and one rotating, forced together by a spring. These faces are machined to be as flat as possible, minimising friction and leakage, and usually lapped together. Dissimilar materials are used, one hard (such as silicon carbide) and one softer (such as carbon-graphite). A common misconception is that a water

pump should not lose any coolant, in fact the seal pack is designed to allow a small volume of coolant to pass between the contact faces to lubricate the seal. This either then runs out of the weep hole, or into an evaporation chamber where, as the name implies, it evaporates. Both perform the same task, but the evaporation chamber stops the user thinking their water pump is leaking when in fact it is functioning perfectly. It is these imperceptible factors that differentiate a high-quality product from that of an ordinary one. With this is in mind Borg and Beck CV Water Pumps are manufactured in ISO / TS certified factories and undergo extensive testing and quality control during their production to ensure optimum product performance. LONG-HAUL PROTECTION FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES: WHY LOWER QUALITY REPLACEMENT FUEL FILTERS ARE A FALSE BY DEREK MARTIN, PARKER RACOR

sing OEM diesel fuel filters during a vehicle’s warranty period is the norm and for good reason. Maintaining this approach after the warranty expires also makes sense. The risks associated with products that may use lower quality parts, materials or technology can potentially have serious and costly implications for the entire vehicle fleet. This article considers the commercial and technical reasons why buying approved fuel filters for the entire operating life of fleet vehicles represents the most cost-effective strategy.

U

Out-of-warranty replacements In the warranty period, high-quality filters bought directly from OEMs like Renault, Mercedes and Scania, or their official distributors, will have been tested to the highest standards. From an operator perspective their replacement is an easy-tofacilitate process. If outside the warranty period, however, there is sometimes the temptation to source cheaper alternatives. The detriments of a non-approved filter rapidly become clear when it is opened up and compared, sideby-side, to an approved one. What’s more, in time, the difference in material condition and filter efficiency will widen further. Often, lower material quality offers poor water separation efficiency, at which point filter life will already be terminally limited. Beyond this time, the capability to remove dirt, particles and microbiological contamination is likely to be inferior, while the risk of more contamination will intensify. Soon, it will not only be the fuel

22

filter that is showing the effects; damage to the fuel injection system and engine could potentially have a considerable knock-on impact for the whole operation. Vehicles will need reallocation and any damaged parts, including the filter, will require rapid replacement or overhaul at additional cost. Chances are, when the vehicle fails, the operator that sought to save money on the initial cost of a replacement filter will be aware of the cause. The operator might, however, be unaware of the real dangers to both fleet vehicles and employees. The dangers of a short-term approach To the everyday person, and indeed many experts, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between a non-OEM approved filter and one tested against the exacting standards set by the manufacturer. The fit will be the same and, apart from colour, the exterior will be nearly identical. Unfortunately, however, the differences will become all too apparent in time. Milder risks involved with fitting an inferior filter include decreased product life, greater levels of impurities passing the filter and poor engine performance. At the other end of the scale, worst case scenarios could see permanent damage to the fuel injection system, namely the injectors, highpressure pump and even the engine. There is no way of telling when and to what extent a

non-approved filter could present a problem, until it occurs. If an issue happens halfway through a shipment, the immediate cost implications will be felt hard. A replacement vehicle will need to be despatched, or else the customer reimbursed at the operator’s cost. The damage to finances, resources and reputation is likely to be significant. Sticking to the rules The EU’s block exemption rule protects the right of an operator to buy non-OEM approved parts, provided they are of equal or better quality. This rule may suggest that all replacement filters are comparable, but it is key to appreciate just how great a difference there is between one approved by the OEMs and one built for value. Further to the block exemption rule are the European emission standards that seek to minimise the harm of pollution from exhausts, with special attention given to heavy-goods vehicles. Euro VI emission standards have contributed greatly to the requirement for enhanced fuel filtration efficiency. There is no doubt that operators are already facing increased costs to meet these latest standards. New vehicles and improved infrastructure will, however, be wasted efforts if the diesel filters within them are not up to task. Of course, it makes complete business sense for operators to seek the best possible deal on new diesel filters. However, be wary that if something seems cheaper than it should, chances are it will not provide the long-haul protection required. For more information: www.parker.com/changingfiltration

APPROVED SUPPLIER FEATURE

REMY THE ICONIC ROTATING ELECTRICS BRAND emy was founded in 1896 and has one of the most comprehensive product portfolios of high-quality alternators and starter motors for commercial vehicles in the UK Aftermarket. For trucks, buses and industrial applications, Remy CV starters and alternators are reliable, hard wearing and designed to meet customers’ needs with various innovative features like electrical soft start or overcrank protection. The innovative electrical soft start technology reduces wear-and-tear by slowly rotating the pinion until it properly engages into the ring gear. Overcrank protection safeguards the starter from adverse starting conditions, such as cold weather, low battery capacity, or operator misuse.

VAN OR CAR? THE ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING BRAKE PADS

ight commercial vehicles (LCVs) are often considered a grey area within the industry, particularly when it comes to the tonnage that identifies a van from a car. With many unsure where different vehicles sit in the marketplace, this begs the question of what friction best suits an LCV and how it differs from the compounds developed for passenger cars. TMD Friction’s UK Global Category Manager for CV, Sue Mckay, discusses how the company distinguishes between the vehicle types, the difference in friction requirements and TMD’s latest LCV innovations that make buying parts more convenient. According to the SMMT, the number of LCV registrations in the UK has risen month-on-month throughout 2017. From January to November last year, we have seen 312,770 vans take to the roads and if the annual figures are anything to go by, the popularity of these vehicles show no sign of slowing down. However, what constitutes an LCV can be a grey area, with many in the industry unsure on how to differentiate between a car and a van. At TMD Friction, we consider a vehicle that is three tons upwards to be a van,

L

46

although car-derived-van marques, such as the Vauxhall Combo, can cause confusion. As this model weighs around 1.8 tons, just over half the weight of a standard LCV, it is technically considered a passenger car, but in some cases it is used as an LCV. This is where driving activity needs to be taken into account, as the amount of time a vehicle is on the road can impact on the friction material required. Taking a Vauxhall Combo that is on the road for long periods of time as an example, a material that can withstand excessive wear would be the most suitable option; due to the high mileage this vehicle would be undertaking on a regular basis. Mintex’s LCV derived material would be perfect here, as it allows brake pads to perform with increased efficiency, meaning they can withstand high temperatures. The material’s improved integrity and added longevity has also lessened the need to change pads between service intervals, ultimately saving money for fleet owners and drivers. This material is ideal for taxis, transits, sprinters and load-carrying vehicles, all of which could vary in weight. Crucially, it is the driving habits and vehicle uses that are important here as opposed to weight and is a factor that is commonly disregarded. With regards to purchasing brake parts, TMD Friction has also made steps in buying

parts for LCVs more convenient through the development of the Mintex Van Kit. Specially engineered for LCV applications, the kit comprises a full axle set including pads, discs, handbrake shoes, all accessory kits, wear leads and Ceratec lubricant. If not all components are used, they can be easily replenished to make up a full box. The kit is ideal for fleet operators and LCV drivers as it can save them time when buying parts and money through lessening the need to change pads between service intervals. It is evident that distinguishing what makes a vehicle an LCV isn’t always clear cut. Although weight is an important marker so is its uses, and both should be considered when choosing the best friction compound for a particular marque or model. The understanding that the two elements play a part when it comes to distinguishing vehicle categories and identifying friction material is important, and needs to be considered by mechanics, fleet operators and drivers across the sector. The Mintex Van Kit is available in 68 part numbers, covering the most popular light vehicle applications, from 2.5 tonnes upwards. For more information: www.tmdfriction.com

THE THEORY OF LUBRICATION FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS MORRIS LUBRICANTS HAS BEEN RUNNING TRAINING DAYS TO EDUCATE ITS CUSTOMERS AND CONSUMERS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF USING THE CORRECT OIL. utomotive Product Manager Adrian Hill of ASK ADE, has developed a selection of training modules to help customers understand specific features of lubricants and lubrication, with great feedback coming from those attending. When asking Adrian about the training seminars and why he feels it is so important to pass on his years of experience in the industry. He explained….

• The reason you feel training is beneficial to customers at both the “supply end i.e motor factors” and “end users” One of the end goals to this training is to provide distributors and end users enough useful information that enables them to make an informed decision when it comes to selecting the correct grade of oil for the job. But even more importantly, explaining what can happen if an incorrect lubricant is used. The automotive lubricant world is filled with hieroglyphics, but a good basic understanding of what it all means and why there are differences can make the distributor / end user more confident. • What you enjoy about the training For me the enjoyable part of the training is about passing on information that I’ve lived with and sorted out in my head over the last 30 years, so that others don’t have to go through the ‘pain’ of all that. Most of our attendees are excellent mechanics / engineers and helping them see how the world of mechanical systems and lubricants fit together is very satisfying. After all it’s not rocket science, but for most people it has never been correctly explained. There is a simple logic to it once you know how. • The balance of supplying technical information without making it too complicated. SYNERGY PREMIUM BRAKING FROM JURATEK THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS!

t is now 10 years since Juratek became involved in Truck Racing and each season keeps getting better and better. It all started when Juratek were in the process of developing their Premium friction material and in order to test the performance and durability of the pads, they needed an extreme application. The 2008 champion of the BTRA (British Truck Racing Championship) was Stuart Oliver, so a request was made to Stuart, who was currently using an OE brand of pad, to test the Juratek Premium pad and compare it to the performance he was currently getting. After putting the material through a full day of pre-race testing, he was so impressed with the pads that he wanted to continue to use these for the forthcoming season. What impressed him the most was the “instant” braking he received when applying the brakes. This superior performance would enable him to brake a fraction of a second later on each corner thus giving him that vital edge when competing. So a partnership was then formed with Stuart to be the approved braking supplier to Team Oliver. A partnership that continues

I

to this day and has helped Juratek to further enhance and fine tune the performance and durability of its friction range. You might expect this superior performance to come at the expense of durability. However, that did not prove to be the case. The Juratek SYNERGY brakes are designed to withstand temperatures in excess of 900°C without excessive wear. In fact on numerous occasions Stuart’s water cooling system has failed, which would normally cause him to retire from the race, but with Juratek brakes fitted he is able to complete the race without any brake fade. Telemetry has often recorded temperatures as high as 1200°C. It would be wrong to think though, that Juratek pads are specially adapted for racing and would be “over-engineered” for normal highways. This though is not the case. In fact the pads that Stuart and other teams race on is an “off the shelf” product. This fact has been recognised by many domestic fleets and bus fleets. Why are they so popular with large fleets? Braking systems on town centre routes or on routes carrying heavy loads come under a great deal of stress and temperatures can

WHY YOU NEED A DEPENDABLE TURBO FROM BTN A turbocharger is subjected to astonishing extremes every day. That’s why it’s vital to fit a replacement designed and built to cope with them, by the original turbo manufacturer.

TN Turbo only supplies 100% OE new or reman turbos from the major manufacturers; which means these are turbos you can 100% depend on. The following statistics show why you should not take the risk of choosing anything other than OE; and how by taking precautionary measures to prevent the three turbo killers: oil contamination, oil starvation and foreign object damage, you could prolong the life of your turbo.

B

Far faster than the engine When the engine is running at 2000 rpm, the turbine in a typical car turbocharger is spinning at over 280,000 rpm - an amazing 4666 revs per second! Due to this incredible rotating speed, correct, clean oil is vital. The shaft is protected by just a thin film of oil on the bearings, so any problem with the oil will damage the bearings or seals, inevitably leading to turbo failure caused by oil contamination. Incredible acceleration A turbo can accelerate from 20,000 to 150,000 rpm in less than a second! That’s why oil

66

starvation should be prevented by ensuring there is never any delay of oil reaching the bearings. Running a turbo without oil for 5 seconds is the same as running an engine without oil for 5 minutes!

Gasping for air At average engine revs, a medium size turbocharger will swallow 130 cubic feet of air every minute - the same as the load space volume of a Transit Connect van.

Hotter than a volcano The turbine in a petrol car turbo can reach 1050°C, this is higher than the melting point of glass. In a diesel car turbo, it gets up to 840°C, which is hotter than molten lava. Non-OE components sourced for the lowest possible cost are likely to be made from inferior grade materials and would not be able to tolerate these extreme temperatures; thus, leading to premature turbo failure.

Micron-perfect To ensure they are perfectly balanced, a turbo’s bearings are manufactured to tolerances smaller than the width of a single human hair.

And as fast as a speeding jet Air speed at the turbo’s compressor impeller can be close to Mach 1, the speed of sound (1235 km/h or 343 metres per second) so even if a small object was to be sucked into the air intake, due to these speeds the damage to the impeller would be catastrophic. This is known as foreign object damage.
