THE THREE TURBO KILLERS

TURBOCHARGERS ARE VERY RELIABLE: LESS THAN 1% OF TURBOS FAIL DUE TO A MANUFACTURING FAULT WITH THE TURBO ITSELF. It is vital to identify why the last turbo failed and rectify the fault, otherwise the replacement could fail too.

More than 95% of failures are caused by the three turbo killers: • Oil starvation – this can be the result of: • blockages (e.g. carbon deposits, silicon on gaskets, kinked pipes) • leaking pipes • low oil level, worn oil pump or lack of oil priming when the turbo was fitted. Note: Blockages and leaks in the air and exhaust system can alter the pressure at the turbo and cause oil leakage. • Oil contamination – can be caused by: • fuel, water, swarf or carbon deposits • overdue oil or filter change • incorrect or poor-quality oil or filter • malfunctioning filter bypass valve • Foreign object damage – can be due to: • leaks in the air intake system • fragments remaining from the failed turbo • washers, gasket material, rag particles, etc. in the air intake; even a very small object can cause severe damage. BTN has a useful Fault Diagnostic Tool on the ‘Turbo Tech’ page of their website, which is designed to help diagnose the fault and provide advice on how to rectify it and prevent further failures. You can also call BTN’s technical helpline and speak to the experts directly on 01895 466663.

There’s a lot of confusion in the market about the differences between genuine OE products and remanufactured or reconditioned products using copy or pattern parts. Fortunately, there’s no such confusion when you deal with BTN Turbo. As the only UK distributor for all the major brands, including Honeywell Garrett, BorgWarner, Holset, Mitsubishi and IHI, all the turbos BTN supply are 100% OE – either brand new or remanufactured by the original manufacturer. To give you even more confidence, all turbos supplied by BTN turbo are supported by a two-year warranty, this is backed up with BTN’s famous No Quibble 12-month warranty for all commercial turbos. They also include free Fit Kits with all the parts needed to fit them, with the option to purchase a wide range of oil feed pipes –saving time and providing extra peace of mind.

CAS E S T U DY: T T E X P R E S S

IN POLE POSITION WITH T TX T

T Express (TTX) is a warehouse and logistics company that is built on its strong brand identity.

The company’s striking green and blue livery makes TTX trucks and trailers some of the most recognisable on the road – so when it came to updating the TTX trailer fleet, the powerful Tiger Trailers branding really struck a chord. David Taylor, Manging Director at TTX, says: “I strongly believe in the marketing potential of a wellconstructed brand identity – and that’s something Tiger

so that helped seal the deal.” Tiger has now built close to 50 curtainside trailers for TTX, accounting for a third of the company’s trailer fleet. The plan moving forward is for every trailer to be built by Tiger within the next five years.

TIGER TRAILERS/ TTX FEATURE

Though the curtainside trailers are quite standard builds, TTX and Tiger have worked together on a bespoke trailer for a very different role: the transportation of Rooster Racing’s MAN racing truck, ‘King Klaus’. David sat down with Darren Holland, Sales Director at Tiger Trailers, to discuss his ideas for the trailer, which Tiger’s design and manufacturing team was able to turn into a reality. “All I had were hopes and dreams and an idea of what I wanted scribbled down on the back of a cigarette packet – where all the best ideas come from,” says David. “Darren and I discussed my design and he said that Tiger would handle everything. The entire process through to completion took around six months and the finished result is frankly awesome.” Darren says of the build: “The approach we took towards the racing trailer is the same as we take to any trailer we build – it’s about putting what the customer wants first. We listen to their requests and try to accommodate them as closely as we can, whether it’s for curtainside trailers for road haulage or a bespoke build to transport a truck like King Klaus!”

“There is also no minimum order quantity or value. CV LOGIX operates an open box policy on all products. Members can buy products without a commitment to bulk stock. They can buy parts in smaller quantities from larger suppliers, something they may not have been able to do before.” As well as greater access to a wider range of suppliers, CV LOGIX also promises improved availability of parts and more efficient service, especially in cases where suppliers have no mainland UK warehouse facility of their own. “The new CV LOGIX also gives us opportunities for bulk service deals,” adds Phil. “It gives depth and range fill opportunities and bulk purchasing. Sensors are indispensable for engine management, and Bosch provides a range of sensors to control and manage key functions. In 2016, Bosch celebrated forty years of Lambda sensors, and this crucial sensor has been popular for over four decades due to its reliability and availability for most vehicle types. Unbeatable thanks to its long service life and optimum engine compatibility, a properly functioning lambda is critical for optimal fuel consumption and low pollutant emissions, ultimately saving the driver money and protecting the environment. Steering systems are another example of safetyrelevant components that need to be replaced by genuine parts. Independent truck workshops or fleet operators’ workshops can offer maintenance and replacement of Bosch steering systems for all main commercial vehicles.
