LIVE LIFE LIKE

GATSBY

BY: MEGAN DRISCOLL “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” - the hit song by Fergie playing on the soundtrack of 2013’s version of “The Great Gatsby.” The motion picture describing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book has captured the hearts of many and has shown people insight on the highs of post-World War I, often called the Roaring 20’s. As we step into our 20’s of this century, you may have heard people deeming this decade as our Roaring 20’s, but what does that mean? For Jay Gatsby, the lavish man overshadowing the movie and book, it meant living life to its fullest. He frequently had large scale, exquisite parties at his mansion on West Egg, yet with all of the people entering and exiting his home, he was still a mysterious man. Many people believed he was nothing more than a figure of existence and were amazed at his wealth and the grandeur parties that he hosted. Few people knew about his personal life. Who were the people that knew him? These people were Daisy Buchanan and Nick Carraway. To Nick Carraway, Daisy Buchanan was just a distant relative that connected him to the mysterious man named Jay Gatsby. But, to Gatsby, Daisy was more than just someone he had crossed paths with throughout his life. Buchanan knew him on a personal level - they fell in love years prior to the setting of the story, and the love that he had for her was immeasurable. Then, after Nick Carraway moved next door to Gatsby, due to his relationship with Daisy and the common goal of “knowing your neighbors,” they eventually met and became friends. Thus, Gatsby showed Carraway a glimpse

into his life by bringing him to speakeasies and confiding in him. Outside of the majority of people, Gatsby decided to confide in a small group of people, specifically these two major characters. They knew him. They knew his past. They knew what made him the man that he was. Out of all people that regularly entered the doors of the Gatsby mansion, these two understood him. This scenario compares to how some people say that they “keep their circle small.” As we step into a new decade, we should live and act like Jay Gatsby. Keep the list of people that you trust small, and keep them close to you. This is what made him so “mysterious.” Most people did not know about Gatsby or questioned if he was a real person because not many people were able to understand who he was outside of the parties. However, keeping your circle small does not mean to only interact with that small circle. As shown in the movie, he had extravagant parties. He allowed all of those people into his home and welcomed them. Having a balance between confiding in small groups of people but also accepting everyone is a mindset that can be taken out of the popular movie. For Gatsby, you could interpret it was important for him to have these lavish parties to make other people happy. It is common nowadays as we call these type of people “people pleasers.” Maybe Gatsby even found happiness in himself by providing others an outlet to relax by hosting these parties. The lifestyle of those that attended his parties can also be a good example of how to live. Returning back to Fergie’s hit song, a little party never killed anyone - right? Being able to balance the mystery of who you are passed surface level and being able to let loose every now and then. Nowadays, people try to emphasize the concept of “balance.” We all practice self-love and loving other people at the same time, yet struggle doing so. Stepping into the ’20s, living and celebrating similar to The Great Gatsby shows an example of how to do so.

You’re stuck between completing assignments and deciding how else to spend your time. You’ve probably forgotten what day it is, along with the last time you had this much free time on your hands. Funny as it may sound, filling up free time can actually be a difficult task, especially knowing that you’ll be cooped up in the house for an indefinite period of time. It can be tough to find activities to keep us occupied and help us avoid getting antsy. However, have no fear! There are a variety of streaming services that allow us to binge-watch our way to sanity during this difficult and inopportune time in quarantine. With all the chaos going on, we all deserve a little time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show, so what better to do than find the perfect one for you? Now is as good a time as ever to start a new series or grab a bowl of popcorn and watch that movie you have been longing to see. As far as movies go, anything featuring Nicholas Sparks is a personal favorite of mine. “My top five are The Choice, The Longest Ride, The Notebook, The Best of Me, and Safe Haven. Dear John is another really good one!” If you’re looking for a new series to watch, below are some suggestions of each that will surely keep you entertained throughout your “Coronacation”;

STREAM INSTEAD OF SCREAM! Sneaky Pete:

Available on Amazon Prime Video

This American crime drama is an Amazon Original that depicts the story of a con man released from jail who decides to assume the identity of his cellmate to escape his troubled past. Sneaky Pete received a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and has gotten numerous five-star reviews. The series currently has three seasons and definitely deserves more publicity so it can continue for a fourth!

All American:

Available on Netflix

This American sports drama first premiered on The CW in 2018. It illustrates the true story of Spencer Paysinger, a rising football star, who is asked to move from his troubled neighborhood to Beverly Hills in order to increase his chances at a better life and a greater shot at playing collegiate football. The series currently has two seasons and received a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to very positive feedback from viewers.

Manifest:

Available on Hulu

Also premiering on NBC, this American supernatural drama tells the story of the mysterious return of commercial airline passengers after going missing in the air for over five years. Although a significant amount of time has passed, the passengers have not aged a day and now experience “callings” that affect their new realities since miraculously returning home. The series is presently on its second season and keeps its audience on its toes with every new episode. While only receiving a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, I still highly recommend this series if you’re looking for something more supernatural.

After being cooped up inside all winter, we’re all ready to get outside and lay in the sun. But, before you grab a pair of sunglasses and tanning oil, you should be aware of the hazards tanning can entail. What is the safest way to get a tan? Is a “natural” tan from the sun healthier than sunless tanning methods? We have all been taught that laying out in the sun can be very dangerous, resulting in horrible sunburns and skin cancer. These dangers are due to ultraviolet, UV, radiation from the sun. According to the National Cancer Society, UV radiation has the potential to permeate through the skin and injure the DNA within our skin cells. This harm to our skin cell genes can later be responsible for the development of skin cancer and other undesirable effects such as wrinkles and eye damage. Some may argue that a tan from the sun is more “natural” than using sunless tanning products and is necessary to get a healthy amount of Vitamin D. However, the National Cancer Society recommends taking a Vitamin D supplement or eating foods high in Vitamin D rather than getting it from the sun’s rays because these methods are not carcinogenic

GUIDELINES FOR GETTING A GLOW

(cancer-causing), while UV rays are. If you are going to be out in the sun this summer, it is recommended to stay covered-- sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and coverups will be your best friends. There are a few different sunless tanning methods such as tanning beds, tanning lotions, and spray tans. The National Cancer Society explains that tanning beds apply UV radiation, just as the sun does. UV radiation causes the skin pigment to darken, but it is very dangerous and carcinogenic because the UV radiation is still damaging DNA within skin cells, potentially allowing cancer to develop. Tanning lotions and sprays both contain an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone, DHA. DHA reacts with the dead cells on the outer surface of our skin to darken them, according to the FDA. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is a government organization responsible for ensuring the safety of food and drug products in the United States, claims that DHA is safe for use on the skin on areas excluding the lips, eyelids, nose, and ears. These areas encompass mucous membranes, and the effects of DHA on these body entryway areas are still unknown. Additionally, DHA

is not safe for ingestion or inhalation which can easily occur during spray tans. After you have a tan from a sunless tanning product, it is important to still remember to wear sunscreen because your skin is still not protected, even though you think it might be. Tanning pills are another tanning method unapproved by the FDA. The active ingredient in many tanning pills is called canthaxanthin, which changes the color of skin upon ingestion. These pills have been linked to issues like liver damage and eye problems. In conclusion, as long as used properly, sunless tanning lotions are the safest way to get tan. I recommend Jergens Natural Glow Wet Skin Moisturizer! It is super easy to use and looks very natural! If you really want to avoid all risks associated with tanning, it is easy to apply sunscreen and stay covered up when in the sun. Whatever you choose, just remember that being tan isn’t as important as you might think. Stay protected, and have a happy summer! DIYQ U A R A N T I N E Within everyone’s world of fashion aesthetics, our palette is always evolving and adapt into our different styles. It isn’t as easy as it sounds to try something new or go for a “new look.” It also isn’t cheap. With our ever-changing cycle of colors, tones, fits, and styles, it’s almost impossible to have outfits or clothes to match everyone’s style. This is where the wonderful world of DIY and innovation comes into play. There are endless ways to customize and fabricate a piece of clothing that was deep in our closet or just needs a change. What better time to do these things than now? Here are three different customized clothing techniques and tricks to revamp your wardrobe:

DISTRESSING Distressed clothes are sort of ironic. The more used and worse quality it looks, the more expensive it probably is off the shelf. So why not do it yourself ? All you need is a shirt you think would look good with that distressed and worn look. This includes pants, shirts, or virtually any item you wish to cut and renew. Typically, these distressed looks can also be achieved through household items as well (For example, It can be as simple as using a cheese grater, scissors, or sandpaper.) Distressing your own clothes is an interesting process. You have control every step of the process which ensures you really get that look you’re trying to achieve.

PATCHWORK Clothes aren’t invincible; they tear, snag, rip, and sometimes just fall apart. Typically, people might throw the clothes out, but what if we could use patchwork and sewing as a fashion statement? Once I started sewing and customizing clothes, patchwork was and still is my personal favorite thing to do. No clothes fit or last forever. These retired pieces can be used as new pieces for a brand new design. Sew the graphic on the back of a sweatshirt or jacket, or take an old handbag and sew the design into the trim or the back pocket of your jeans. The combinations are endless and will turn a simple piece of clothing into something unique. For this DIY you would need a needle and thread, a sewing machine, or in some cases just some iron-on connections to temporarily go for that look and try it out.

BLEACH/TIE DYE Bleaching and tye-dying clothes have many different outcomes and looks that can work for almost anyone’s taste. There are endless tutorials online that are super simple to follow, and all you need is household items. For example, all you need is bleach, a spray bottle, rubber bands or hair ties to create a one-of-a-kind piece. The amazing part about bleaching and tye-dying is that there are countless styles, patterns, and intensities you can customize your new clothes into. Bleaching or tie-dying clothes can take one of your boring shirts or sweatshirts and turn it into a one-of-a-kind custom piece that no one has seen before. All of these DIY projects have plenty of instructions and styles you can find online to follow to fit your new aesthetic. The possibilities are endless, and you can expect countless compliments and questions about your new collection of one-of-a-kind clothes, all while reducing waste, saving money, and expressing your creative genius.

SELF-CARE BEAUTY ACTIVITIES

Make a bubble bath. Throw in a soothing bath bomb, light some candles, grab a book, and relax!

Stay hydrated. It can be tough to remember to drink water when your normal routine is disrupted, so start each morning by creating a pitcher of cucumber, lemon, or any fruit-infused water to continuously drink throughout the day. Hydration is key for not only your internal health during this time, but also aids in maintaining a healthy complexion.

Read your favorite beauty blog. There’s no better time to catch up on all the latest trends! Right now, I’m loving Kourtney Kardashian’s blog poosh.com. Her “Life+Style” section is filled with beauty and home hacks that I currently can’t get enough of !

Clean your makeup brushes. It’s recommended to clean makeup brushes once a week, but let’s be real- it’s something most of us put off for longer than that. Set aside 5-10 minutes one night to deep-clean your sponges and bristles, and your skin will thank you later!

Create a DIY hair mask. Avocados, coconut oil and honey are just a few staple cooking ingredients that can also be worked through your hair for shiny, nourished locks.

Clean eating has always been one of the key factors to determine one’s overall wellbeing, and during the recent quarantine issue from the COVID-19 virus, this statement has never been more important. Gathering with one’s family to try new, healthy recipes offers a time of entertainment and a chance to show off ones cooking skills. People now have the time to experience the joys of cooking homemade recipes from scratch and trying out new options for healthy recipes. A popular option, easy to make and involves few ingredients, is the famous banana pancake recipe. This treat is delicious, fun to make, and offers healthy benefits as well.

IT’S TIME TO CARE ABOUT BEING SELF-AWARE BY:

ROMAN

MEILINGER

Self-awareness may bring thoughts of hippies and potheads to mind, but that’s not necessary for discovering your full potential despite what you’ve seen on Grace and Frankie. Accepting that you are flawed and responsible for every action or reaction you’ve had in situations that occur throughout your life is the first step in your personal growth accompanied by the will, drive, and desire to be better. Whether that’s for yourself, loved ones, or all your relationships, internally and externally, you will be amazed at how much your life can turn for the better with the results just from changing yourself. Cue the Enneagram. One of the greatest things that has happened during my life so far is discovering this personality system. It is based on our brains developing differently due to unique childhood experiences, which I learned after graduating high school. I think the best way to motivate you to start your own growth is to tell you the story of how mine started while visiting my half-sister in Idaho. Here’s the thing, I’ve always thought of these “personality tests” like Zodiac signs and such to be a bunch of hogwash, and meanwhile this half-sister of mine was always fascinated by them and would become totally involved learning about all of them. So here she goes again about something called the Enneagram one day, which must have intrigued one of my other sisters because she started reading this book called The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile about this concept. She gets to a chapter about a personality type referred to as a “4” and comes up to me telling me I have to read this chapter because if I wasn’t a “4,” no one was a “4.” I entertained her analysis of me by reading this chapter, which exposed my life in just a matter of sentences. Not only was this book pointing out my thought processes and reasoning behind my actions, but it literally gave examples of things I have done in certain scenarios. Like can I get a “Yikes” from Nicki Minaj please? I sat there and read through all my strengths and weaknesses while having flashbacks to drama in high school and relationship conflicts, which all could have been avoided if only I had understood myself and my friends. Despite hating to read, I went on to read this one book three times along with several others about the Enneagram, so that I could fully understand myself. The goal is to become more centered on the enneagram with my dominant 4w3 personality. By learning the enneagram, I was also able to guess what types my friends were to help me be more understanding of them and reduce conflict in my relationships. However, it is important to know that you are the only one able to know your type for sure, and your friends are the only ones that can know their type for sure. Reading the book will give you a more accurate typing than taking a quiz because rather than allowing you to make decisions about yourself, it is all laid out in front of you. I hope this inspires you to learn the Enneagram, and use this time at home to learn how to become the best, true you.

I’ve taught in foreign villages, created friendships from continent to continent, and learned some of life’s most precious lessons while scattering pieces of my heart around the world. Throughout the time I’ve spent in 15 different countries, I’ve come to learn that travel let’s one acquire an outlook on life that embodies wisdom, perspective, and clarity: something I like to call a traveler’s sixth sense. The first component of the traveler’s sixth sense is feeling a natural sense of wisdom. I felt my first grasp of this wisdom when I was teaching Geography in Fiji. I began this new endeavor by nervously embracing the challenge, but once I saw the smiling faces of my students, everything fell into place. Their

16 ǁ SPRING 2020

excitement to learn about the world calmed me. They simply opened themselves up to me and my teachings, with no hesitation. As a result, I learned something too. They showed me that when you give your heart to somewhere or something, and let the world do with it what it may, the world returns to you a sense of wisdom that you couldn’t have fathomed before. The second component is allowing yourself to value perspective. I began to see this on a journey of mine to Australia. There I learned that once you have seen the moon on the other side of the world, you’re capable of holding life with a new set of values. These values embrace what every traveler comes to accept

through their adventures: perspective. Perspective is the power that goes beyond seeing the movements and the motions, but instead, seeing everything as a whole and understanding which elements of life are worth embracing. The third component is finding clarity. For me, I never realized how much I needed clarity until I found it while exploring Prague. I came to realize that in situations where your heart is most torn, clarity is right in front of you. It’s that feeling in your chest that you dream of pursuing, but then deny yourself. It’s the butterflies, the adrenaline, and the heart strings all wrapped into one. Truly, clarity is when you allow your mind to turn off, and allow the fiery force burn-

ing in your heart to give you the push you need to make memories you will forever cherish. The traveler’s sixth sense is what lies in your heart once you’ve dedicated yourself to the love that lies around the world. Travel lets you see how small of a piece you are in this intricate puzzle of life, but it also shows you how big of a role you can have with your own happiness. Use that open mindset to bring light to all whose paths you cross, challenge yourself to be the one who pushes your own limits, and never forget to take the time to pause, and hold onto these moments that define the life you are so lucky to live.

WORKOUT ROUTINES THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME Throughout the years, the way society has viewed the ideal female body image has changed countless times. Why? The idea of the ‘perfect’ body is influenced by the current trends of the time and pop culture. The ideal body is not static, it’s ever changing. Chances are, the traits that we find desirable today were not seen as desirable a decade ago.

— In the 1920’s, all curves were seen as the enemy. Straight silhouettes and small hips were the ideal shape. — The 1930’s saw a return of a softly defined waist and hips, contrary to the 1920’s. — The 1940’s honored a squared and angled silhouette. Different then the soft lines of the 30’s, broad shoulders were all the rage. — The 1950’s celebrated large busts, a dramatic waist line and large hips. — A drastic change occurred in the 1960’s: a revolution back to the looks of the 1920’s. A straight silhouette was the goal with minimum attention to the hips and bust. — The 1970’s kept with the straight lines of the 60’s with the introduction to spandex and bodysuits, but did em brace a slight curve within the figure. — The 1980’s introduced the supermodel body with an ideal figure of long legs and lean muscle. — The 1990’s adopted a small frame and petite body type as its dream girl— differing from the length of the 80’s. — The early 2000’s was a time of washboard abs and lean figures with minimal curves… flash forward to present day to the era of the glutes!

The idea of the ‘perfect body’ is just that— an idea. An ever changing idea that doesn’t stand the test of time. There is no ‘perfect body’, only fads that come and go. To live by these standards is not sustainable or worth it. What matters is how you feel your best, because that idea will never go out of style.

1920’s: Stationary Bikes and Rowing Machines were all the trend in the 1920’s… along with a vibrating belt that massaged the body while the user stood still. Although we don’t recommend the ladder, stationary bikes and rowing machines are great forms of exercise that incorporate both strength and cardio training. Stationary bikes can include your favorite spin class to a solo ride while rowing is very much a mind-body connection. Make sure to push with your legs, followed by your core and arms to gain all of the great effects the machine has to offer for your body! 1930’s: Body Weight Exercises. The 1930’s incorporated repetitious body weight exercises into the normal routine. Tried and true,, body weight exercises are a convenient and effective way to get your burn in for the day. Try some exercises like burpees, leg lifts, squats, and planks! 1940’s: The 1940’s followed in the 1930’s footsteps— bodyweight exercises were still the main go to at this time! Since the 40’s was full of a time of hard elbow grease during the war, try to incorporate some exercises focused on your arms. Examples include push-ups, dips and planks! 1950’s: Poodle skirts were all the rage and so was dancing! The 1950’s was a time of extremely fun ways of exercise. From the sock hop to your

own backyard, it’s easy to incorporate a 1950’s themed workout into your routine. Hula hoop your way to a great ab workout! 1960’s: The 60’s called for calisthenics. To increase flexibility, strength and overall fitness, try movements that involve pulling, pushing and bending. Go for a run, push a sled, or row! 1970’s and 1980’s: “Let’s get physical!” The 1970’s and 1980’s were a time of step aerobics, leg warmers and colorful workouts. At home videos were all the trend and leg warmers were a must. Go to your favorite workout class at the gym to spice up your routine! 1990’s: The 90’s were all about the ThighMaster. The main goal? A toned inner and outer thigh. Try some squats with light weights, lunges, and the stair master to accomplish the 90’s dream. 2000 and beyond: With so many workouts available to us present day, it gets overwhelming! The most popular trend from the early 2000’s and beyond involves group exercise classes in the form of spinning/cycling, Zumba, or kickboxing. Norwegian Formula was designed for those living in cold-weather climates like Norway, harsh temperatures dry your skin just as bad as hyper-washing does. This formula is amazing as a hand cream because it isn’t sticky or greasy like many dry skin creams can be, but it does its job equally as well as waxier formulas. You can, in fact, unscrew your jar of Nutella and be moisturized at the same time. Plus, the formula is unscented, so you can put it by your sink for anyone in your quarantine party to use, or if you really want to keep protected, buy your own personal bottle. CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin $9.99 at Target This product is a win-win. If you want deep, solid hydration without a greasy, heavy finish, this is your right-hand man. The three different ceramides (waxy lipid molecules) in the formula restore hydration and nutrients you washed off, keeping your moneymaker in balance. You get a good amount of product (eight ounces) to last you through this dumpster fire, and the best part? It’s $9.99 at Target right now. No need to ration moisture here!

Desperate times call for desperate hand washing and showering. Is that not the expression? Well, it is now. COVID-19 has us all hustling back and forth to the sink or shower more than ever, and that is, by all accounts, a positive thing. Keep doing that, folks. However, the constant washing and soaping of all of your parts can be pretty taxing on the overall hydration of your skin, and it’s worth paying attention to this given the unpredictable timeframe of this crisis. I’ve put together some great products for your face, hands, and body that your brother, mother, or whoever you’re quarantining with can use to keep your homebody-selves hydrated. The best part: you can get all of them delivered to your door. #FlattenTheCurve

FACE

PROTECT YOURSELF & YOUR SKIN

$7.39 at Amazon The big-ticket ingredient in this formula, hyaluronic acid, is your dehydrated backside’s best friend. Hyaluronic Acid is found naturally in your skin, keeping water in the skin barrier to ensure it’s supple and hydrated. I put it on post-shower to lock in the moisture, and I find that my skin thanks me with a smooth, soft surface. A little goes a long way, but don’t worry about finishing this bottle; a 16 ounce will stick around longer than you think. Stay thirsty, my friends.

“BUMMING

IT IN

STYLE”

Being quarantined into our homes has allowed everyone to achieve max comfort in the ways that they dress. This includes sweats, hoodies, fuzzy socks, and even slippers. It seems as though almost everyone is “bumming it.” Yet, some people are taking “bumming it” to a whole new level. These new levels range from cropped tie dye sweaters and matching sweats to grey hoodies and sweatpants. These comfy and trendy pieces are popping up everywhere. However, these sets have a tendency to be quite expensive. If you do not want to spend nearly $200 on a set, here are some places that you can get them:

If that still isn’t up your alley, and you’re looking for something to do while you’re in quarantine, making your own set is super easy and inexpensive. If you are able to, you can go to Wal-Mart and pick up a hoodie or crew neck and matching sweatpants. If you are not able to leave your house, you can also order them from Amazon. Once you have your set, you can choose to bleach, tie dye, or leave it as is. The possibilities are endless, and it is up to you to decided how you want your set to look. Cropping the top is also an option. Once finished, you will have a super cute personalized set.

Sweatpants sets are an easy way to stay comfortable while in quarantine. Even once the quarantine is over, sets are also super comfortable to wear out while still looking trendy. Pair with some gold jewelry, sneakers and your favorite sunglasses to complete the look. Sets are very universal and almost seem to be a necessity.
