s Freshmen in college, we wanted to create a way to further our passion for fashion and lifestyle. As strategic communication majors, we found a way to expand our expertise in marketing, advertising and entrepreneurship. DJ HARGRAVE

M

en’s wear. Although a hobby to some, it is the chosen lifestyle of DJ Hargrave. Hargrave a junior Strategic Communications major from Winston, Salem, NC, has been pursuing his love of style for years. After following the trends and having the desire to be more involved in the fashion community, he started his own trends by creating a men’s fashion blog. On Point sat down with Hargrave for a one on one interview to get to know what drove him to where he is today and how he continues to pursue his dreams.

6 student feature

His love for fashion began back in high school, noting that it was the time when he discovered his passion. “I played basketball my whole life. My dream was to be in the NBA, like everyone else. When I got to my junior year of high school I just lost my passion so from there I asked myself what do I want to do now. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to major in, in college. I thought back to game days when we would dress up all the time, and I didn’t know what I was doing then but I liked the feeling that it brought me of dressing up and presenting the best version of myself to the world.” He would go to Barnes & Noble almost every day after school to read books about fashion to broaden his knowledge on the subject. Then he started following GQ magazine and numerous fashion blogs. “It really all started from basketball, then I started studying fashion through curiosity” said Hargrave. The creation of his personal blog was the next major step for Hargrave in his pursuit of the fashion industry. “It got to April of my freshman year of college and I was already involved in a lot of things. They say that’s your year of discovery, join a bunch of clubs to meet new people and find yourself. I got to the end of it and I realized that I had been a part of all of these things but I had never started anything.” Earlier on in the year Hargrave created a group called “HPU Six Gents” which was a personal development program for college men. “This was my first taste in starting something and from there I wanted to make an impact on a bigger scale” recalled Hargrave. After coming to this realization, he acknowledged that he wanted to start a business but he was unsure of where to begin. He decided to do something inexpensive that he could run by himself, which is where the idea of a blog originated. Hargrave said, “When I first started, I really didn’t know what a blog was to be honest. I followed other bloggers on Instagram who do what I now do. I didn’t even realize they were bloggers, I just thought they were pretty cool. Seeing them do their thing on Instagram and wanting to make an impact on other people is what really inspired me to start it.” Through his blog, Hargrave hopes to achieve the goal of blogging full time for a career, eventually developing his own men’s wear line. “I value my time more than anything else and I want to be able to spend my time inspiring people and making a positive impact.” Hargrave currently blogs Monday through Friday but hopes to expand it to a point where he can hire a staff and run it Sunday through Sunday. Hargrave excitedly explains “One of my lofty goals is to inspire a billion people every day, to have that influence in the men’s fashion space and eventually expand it from something that is just about men’s fashion to something that is about making the world a better place.” He also aspires to start a non-profit for inner city children to provide them with suits and interview wear as most do not have access to this type of clothing. Another goal of Hargrave’s is to help brands expand by helping them by drawing the attention of customers and reaching out to recommend products and styles. Hargrave has had projects with several high-end fashion brands such as Coach, Express, Macys, Urban Outfitters, and several more just after starting his blogging career. These brands have reached out to Hargrave and asked to collaborate with him by sending certain articles of clothing or accessories to be featured on Instagram or one of his blog posts. “I try to tell a story around their product, whether it is something that has happened to me in the past or something that I have noticed about guys around me” explains Hargrave. He does not sell, pitch, or reach out to any brands. “Some people tell you to send out emails, some says that they will come to you. I’m one that believes that they will come to you. As long as you work hard there is no reason that no one should be able to find you.” After reaching an impressive milestone of ten thousand followers on Instagram, he realized that he was much more than a blogger -he was an influencer. Once he could coin this term, he became even more serious about his work. Hargrave has achieved so much success through hard work, determination and perseverance in the matter of only two years. He is an inspiration to many that if you truly desire something enough and put forth all your effort, great things will come to you. He leads by example, not only as blogger and influencer, but as an entrepreneur in men’s fashion by inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. Written by: Sophia Brown

Spring skincare routine + The truth about facial oils 1. Cleanse After removing your makeup, cleansing your skin provides an extra cleanse to remove toxins, dirt, and excess makeup. Micellar water provides a gentle cleanse while keeping your skin moisturized. For a deeper cleanse, use a cotton pad saturated with micellar water pre-cleansing.

2. Moisturize

La Rouche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream $23.99, Dermstore / Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water $6, Target

Hydrate your skin post cleansing to provide a clear surface for makeup/ any type of treatments. Add a few drops of sunscreen in the morning and a dab of primer before applying foundation. Hydrating your skin is one of the most important steps in your skin care routine to keep your skin from getting irritated, especially in the winter months. By not moisturizing, you are more prone to break outs as your natural oils build up when skin becomes irritated as the result of any drying cleansers or treatments.

When your skin is extra dry, apply a thick moisturizing overnight mask. Have a few breakouts? A clarifying drying lotion as a spot treatment or a thick mud mask will do the trick. When you have a long night with little sleep, reduce dark circles with firming eye gels. Are facial oils worth the hype? Facial oils are more beneficial than perceived, providing natural moisture without clogging pores or irritating the skin. Here are a few facts to get things straight about the beauty trend of the season.

Clears Skin Yeah, sounds weird I know. However certain oils such as Tea Tree Oil has been found to be just as effective ad benzoyl peroxide, without the negative side effects such as red, drying, and peeling of the skin.

Free-Radical Protection Botanical oils such as argan, passion fruit, and African marula oils provide a ton of antioxidants

Improved Skin Tolerance Many oils such as argan, yangu, and borage seed oils decrease inflammation. When using serums for anti aging or acne, a soothing oil will calm the skin.

Plumping Skin

ce c.

As you age, your natural oils decrease and your skin dries out, allowing wrinkles to appear deeper and more noticeable. Oils pass through the lipid layer of skin faster than creams, softening the appearance of fine lines. Olive and coconut oils work wonders for the face and body.

Better Absorption SPACE.NK.apothecary Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil $75, Barney’s New York

Applying facial oils before serums allow for better absorption of the product, without irritating the skin.

SHE’S KNOT YOUR AVERAGE STUDENT All her life, she’s been inspired to help the people around her. She has a passion for moving the lives of many and with that, she began her knot so average life.

Erika Bridges, a senior at High Point University, is the definition of a person who wants to make the world a better place. As a middle school and high school student, she was passionate about community work. As a D1 athlete, she has a built up a hectic schedule. That being said, with her passion in mind, she decided to start her own business that tied together her two loves, confidence and the community. In September, 2016, the beginning of her senior year, she founded, Knot Average. “Hair accessories for [y]our cause.” Her success has been outstanding, to say the least. We asked her what it was like to have her own businesses and how it helps with her self-esteem. Erika spoke highly of this subject. She responded, “Classes make so much more sense, now that I’m using what I learn in my dayto-day life. As a female, not only power, or a title, or a status, but once you start your own business, nothing can stop you, especially if you do it by yourself. I feel more confident because I get to call all the shots, for the most part. My business is different because it’s not just making money for myself but to give to other people.” Erika has an amazing quality about her, caring for others. We asked her what inspired her to give back and she answered, “I’ve been blessed and there are so many everyday luxuries that we take for granted. This past summer I worked in DC where there were homeless

people on every corner. There were times when I was bartending and I would take my tips to buy ponchos or bottled water for the people sleeping on the streets. It’s the little things we take for granted. But along with homelessness, there are other battles we are fighting such as diseases and oppression, so wherever I can put the money that will help someone, I’m happy to do so.” With her hair ties, she is inspiring women and men to be themselves and to live out their natural beauty. Erika states, “Since they have fun designs on them, a lot of people wear them which gets people talking. People can be involved with charities that they are close with. It’s also awesome because it’s not just me choosing charities, I include the customers. When customers/ friends email me saying I’m passionate about a certain cause or charity, they get put on a list to receive a donation. Donations are for not only my passion but for everyone’s passion. “ All in all, Erika strongly believes in building confidence. Her advice is this, “Don’t try and define the way that you feel about yourself based on the way other people see you. Because if you start to truly love yourself, your confidence will take you so much farther than anyone else can or what you can learn in a book. With a business, it’s hard to sell hair ties to a group of men, but if I’m confident and explain the importance, the conversation takes a different turn. Really, just start with loving and appreciating yourself - realize how valuable you are and everything else will fall into place.” The end goal for Erika is amazing. “I want my business to be all female. I want to empower other females and to make people realize how powerful woman are. We don’t need certain things to define what we are capable of. I never want to sell my brand. I want to focus more on having my hair ties in boutiques and yoga studios and salons. I don’t want it to be available in every store because it should keep it’s purpose and uniqueness. Regardless of how much this company makes, it’s for the community & not for me.” Written by:

Your

Natural Self

Natural beauty is a sore subject for some, but On Point Magazine is working on inspiring others to accept themselves as who they are, because everyone is beautiful.

12 COVER STORY

As a team, we wanted to create content that shows how we are not only inspiring confidence through health and fashion, but through our natural skin. Everyone around the world struggles with the idea of not wearing makeup, or “covering” up our flaws. Everyone goes through some kind of beauty annoyance, whether that be acne, braces, or a bad hair day. We all have those moments and it is okay! In today’s society, people are so used to editing and fixing themselves for social media, but why not just post a picture without a filter? We are all guilty of editing ourselves somehow. Together, let’s inspire the world to accept people as who they are and help people achieve ultimate confidence. People are truly amazing. Everyone has beautiful qualities, inside and out, and we need to accept those traits! We are lucky to have a world full of diversity, so we need to take advantage of people’s uniqueness and different characteristics. Doing this can lead to lives full of happiness and adventure. For some inspiration, we pulled together a few inspirational quotes that we think will help inspire the people around us to accept their beautiful selves. On Point would like to dedicate this article to Jamie Robinson, a student at HPU. He is the creator of this idea and we would like to thank him for inspiring this amazing story. Jamie believes in accepting natural beauty and is passionate in motivating others to do the same.

Thank you, Jamie! You are truly an inspiration to all. Written by: Haley Bossart

2017 was a record breaking year for the 89th Academy Awards. Focusing on themes of compassion, hope, and empathy, this year’s Oscars were jam packed with new and exciting talent. La La Land

Sealed Oscar history before the show even aired by receiving a record breaking 14 nominations, tying with Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950). Damien Chazelle won Best Director, making him the youngest director to do so (he beat Norman Taurog for 1931’s Skippy by 229 days). La La Land was also nominated in the music category twice for “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” with music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Pasek and Paul, who have written the music for Broadway’s acclaimed Dear Evan Hansen, went head to head with fellow Broadway composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton: An American Musical fame. Ultimately, Hurwitz, Pasek, and Paul won Best Original Song for “City of Stars.”

Manchester By The Sea

Lucas Hedges is currently enrolled at the UNC School of the Arts right by here in the Triad. At age 20, Hedges would have been the youngest person to win Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The youngest Best Supporting Actor title is currently held by Timothy Hutton from Ordinary People (1980). Both received the nomination at age 20, however, Hedges would have been approximately 142 days younger than Hutton was at the time. Thus, Hedges is one of the youngest actors to have ever been nominated.

Your Guide on How to Always be

Confident By Gabriella Katz

Being confident is something easier said than

In a world where it is easy for one’s confidence to get shattered through what one might see through social media there needs to be more positive reinforcement and more confidence building inspiration on social media.

n e v e t n e d fi n o c e r o m l e Here are some ways to fe t. s e w lo e th e b t h ig m e when one’s confidenc 1. Stand Tall

Good posture is scientifically proven to have a positive effect on one’s mental perception of themselves because standing tall makes one feel more aligned physically and mentally.

2. Listen to a favorite song/album

Sometimes dance parties are necessary to distract from a stressful situation or a stressful aspect of your life. So, listen to some Beyonce or whatever makes you feel you are on top of the world.

3. Remember a time where you were confident

Remember that position you held in high school that made you feel like the best person out there, dig into your memory box and just remembering back to that time will help you so much and bring back that confidence.

4. Treat yourself

When was the last time you actually got ready in the morning and didn’t just roll out of bed and go to class. Take some time and do your makeup or pick out a rocking outfit and you will feel so much better.

5. Exercise

Yes, it may be difficult with a crazy schedule that one may have, but when you exercise endorphins are released that are scientifically proven to not only clear your mind but to increase your confidence and make you feel better. It is also proven to help you focus and help with your schoolwork
