Market approach In addition to the current sales network with representatives in all regions of Brazil, Marcopolo will strengthen its presence in the domestic market with three new sales offices for bus bodies and spare parts. Located in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, the offices are under implementation phase. According to the Director of Commercial Operations and Marketing, Paulo Corso, the move seeks to widen the space for growth and be prepared to respond quickly to market demands.

“They are subsidiaries of Marcopolo SA. In this way we believe that by expanding our field of activity in the market, we have created a direct commercial channel between the factory and the customer”, he explains, adding that in other markets Marcopolo continues with its current network of representatives. “For a long time our network has been doing an important job and helping in the growth of the company”, he concludes.

Delivery of the First Torino S Units Presented to the market in May, Torino S already roams Brazilian roads. The GA Brasil Group, one of the main public transport operators in the Country, operating for more than 50 years, has acquired the first 12 units of the model that will be incorporated into the fleet of companies belonging to the group. Six buses were delivered to Umuarama (Umuarama-PR), four to the Auto Lotação Princesa do Norte (Montes Claros-MG), one to Expresso Valônia (Itajubá-MG) and one to Transporte Cisne (Itabira-MG).

With the vehicle, Chapecoense enters the “Volksbus” squad, a project of MAN in partnership with Marcopolo, which started in 2008 and today carries 17 Brazilian clubs. Participation in fairs is a great ally to present technologies and bring companies closer to their markets. In 2017, Marcopolo was present with its products at events promoted by entities representative of the sector that gathered representatives of the entire chain belonging to the transportation segment.

Tribute and innovation at Transpúblico 2017 Marcopolo showcased at the Transpúblico (Urban mobility Fair) a Paradiso 1800 DD with a special painting project honoring Paulo Bellini, President Emeritus of Marcopolo, who passed away last June; a Viale BRT, and a Torino S, launched at the end of the first half with a focus on operational efficiency

and ease of maintenance. It happened in August at the Transamérica Expo Center in São Paulo, and simultaneously with the NTU National Seminar, promoted by the National Association of Urban Transport Companies - NTU. Included in the schedule of events is the award ceremony of the Medal of

Merit of Brazilian Urban Transport, which praises the work of individuals and corporations that work to promote public passenger transport in Brazil. Paulo Bellini was recognized in the In Memorian category. The posthumous homage was received by his sons Mauro Bellini and Paulo Pacheco Bellini.

New financing options To offer more financing options for the purchase of its models, Marcopolo has the support of its partner Bradesco Financiamento. Through the partnership, CDC credit lines (direct consumer credit) and Leasing with

special interest rates starting at 1.02% per month became available to Marcopolo customers. In addition to the lower rates, credit lines make it possible to finance up to 90% of the value of the asset, payment terms

These are some of the numbers from the 40th edition of the Dakar Rally, one of the most traditional and difficult rallies in the world. It starts on January 6 - crossing Peru, Bolivia and Argentina and Marcopolo will be part of this great competition. For the transportation of Rally participants, the company will supply to the

History and Tradition

The first steps in the history of Via Bariloche, a traditional transportation company of Argentina, were taken in the 1970s. The son of Italian immigrants, Roberto Trappa, who passed away in 2011, began transporting workers and students. Short-distance travels were replaced by national and international passenger transport. From the 1980s, with the expansion of its routes, the fleet was also extended with vehicles suitable for long distances. Viviana Tinari, general manager at the company, tells us the following chapters of this story.

Viajante: When does the history of Via Bariloche begin? Viviana Tinari - The great jump occurred with the creation of Vía Bariloche in 1992, the year in which the State opened the competition in the regular long-distance transportation sector. The company started operating a line from Buenos Aires to Bariloche and began a period of great growth. The company, unlike those in operation until then, made an effort to offer a good service and was the first to offer a premium line. At the time, it sought to differentiate itself from the other transport operators and to provide an on-board service focused on the well-being of passengers, with 180 ° recliners, blankets and pillows as well as an auxiliary service whose function was to offer customers a personalized service, serving morning coffee, lunch and dinner. Viajante: What is the company’s current structure? Viviana - There are more than 400 units and more than 70 services with different routes and schedules, especially in the central and southern region of our country. Currently we have long distance lines, with intervals of 800 km to 3,500 km; medium distance lines, with some 200 km; and short distance services, lines that contemplate around 30 km. Viajante: Does the diversification of services help create new business opportunities? Viviana - In the last years, we have sought to diversify the service portfolio, which helps us to expand the possibilities of action and overcome pos-

sible inherent difficulties of the sector. In 2000, Vía Cargo was created, a cargo transportation company that has become one of the four largest in the country, with presence in all provinces, a commercial network of 250 branches and its own fleet with 150 trucks. Diversity of Action Grupo Águia Branca, one of the country’s largest transport and logistics business conglomerates, is a successful business model in the Brazilian transportation scenario. Working on different fronts and strengthening its operations, it is expanding its lines with the recent acquisition of Expresso Brasileiro. In more than 70 years of operation, through acquisitions, mergers and the continuous overcoming of

Headquartered in Espírito Santo, the Group operates throughout Brazil in the services of air and road transportation of passengers, logistics and vehicle trade. Founded in 1946, its first route was the passenger transportation between Governador Valadares and Teófilo Otoni, in Minas Gerais. Currently, more than 13 thousand people work in the

Group, including the companies VIX Logística, Expresso Brasileiro, Autoport, Kurumá, Osaka, Savana, Vitoria Diesel, Viação Águia Branca, Vitória Motors and Land Vitória, besides being part of the group of shareholders of Azul Linhas Aéreas. We spoke with Renan Chieppe, general director of the Passenger Division of the Grupo Águia Branca, about the success trajectory and the new challenges with the recent acquisition of Expresso Brasileiro.

Viajante - What does the acquisition of Expresso Brasileiro represent for Grupo Águia Branca? Renan - The acquisition of Expresso Brasileiro, completed in last September, is a strong example of the strategy adopted by the Group over the years and represents its strengthening in the country’s busiest market, between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Although Grupo Águia Branca was already operating in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, we now have the opportunity to strengthen our operations in these states. Viajante - What strategies will be used to strengthen the operations that now have been joined? Renan - The current practices and services of the São Paulo company will be enriched by the implementation of projects that are already consolidated in Águia Branca, such as

the 17-year-old Sleep Science Program, which monitors sleep and cares for the drivers’ quality of life, and the award actions that are already employed in the company, such as the Top Driver Program, for drivers with exemplary and differentiated conduct, and the Economic Transport Program, which aims at the safety of travel as well as the optimal use of resources and preservation of the Environment, among others. Viajante - How is the Sleep Science Program conducted? What will the drivers of Expresso Brasileiro enjoy? Renan - The aim of the program is to monitor the health and quality of life of these professionals, stimulating healthy habits and promoting the treatment of possible factors that may disturb a restful sleep, as well as adequate rest, according to the demands of the profession. Currently, the program has three sleep labs with a total of five beds and ten alertness stimulation rooms. During the night trips and at some strategic stops, the drivers stay in the rooms for about 20 minutes. In the alertness stimulation rooms, the employee has stretching exercises and exercise bicycle activities, as well as having a light, healthy and sugar-free diet, which avoids prolonged fasting and also the consumption of foods that are difficult to digest. logies and that which we actually have in operation. The service bottleneck and the poor quality in several segments make it clear that we need a lot of investment in this sector. With the crisis of recent years, the public sector has lost the financial capacity to invest and efficiently manage the public transport. Viajante - As a consequence, do you believe that this scenario ends up favoring private transportation, increasing the consumption of cars and thus causing a chaotic crowding of the cities’ streets? Thaís - Yes. We have been living with this for years, but I see an increase in the debate on mobility in cities, which can stimulate new investments and solutions. In the long term, the advance in collective transportation would bring a lot of efficiency and quality to people’s lives, contributing to the country’s development. Viajante - In this scenario of fundamental search for competitiveness and productivity, what is the role of mobility? Thaís - Mobility is key to productivity and competitiveness. How can the Brazilian professionals be as efficient and productive as the European and

American ones? You simply cannot because you lose hours to get to work due to traffic. Viajante - Does lack of mobility affect the productivity and competitiveness of national companies? Thais - A lot! Today we need four Brazilian workers to do what an American worker produces alone. Of course there are several explanations for this picture, but in addition to education and investment in innovation and technology, collective transportation also justifies the low productivity in Brazil. Imagine a Brazilian worker who takes up to three hours to get to work, often using a very low quality transportation service. Viajante – What other aspects would a change in this scenario benefit? Thaís - At the other end is the cost of transportation, which even though subsidized by the public sector, still weighs heavily on the budget of a good part of the Brazilian population. Therefore, any change that provides improvement in the quality of the service and the life of the workers and is less costly, will positively affect the development of the country. Viajante – Does economic growth depend on

mobility? Thaís - Yes, of course. For the reasons I put above, especially. Mobility is productivity and efficiency, fundamentally. Sustainable growth depends on balanced conditions for the functioning of cities and services. The investment in mobility needs maturation time but has a faster effect than other infrastructure sectors. Viajante - What is the scenario that the Brazilian transport entrepreneur can expect since the government has no resources (and will not have for some years) to invest in road infrastructure and mobility? Thaís - This investment will depend a lot on the private sector and for that, the government’s plan for concessions and privatizations will be the main driver. The Brazilian state has lost its capacity to invest, and for at least five years, the country will need to have private sector capital. This resource will massively come back, the better the business environment and legal security to provide intensive capital to the economy get. This move is likely to gain momentum in 2018, but with greater potential after the general election (November 2018).

The Brazilian urban mobility picture Renato Siqueira Journalist specialized on Urban Mobility

For decades, Brazil has lacked investments in urban mobility. The hosting of the World Cup and the Olympic Games served to boost the release of resources, aiming at improving the public transport service in Brazilian cities. The Federal Government has launched financing lines for works such as large and medium-sized mobility programs, but the lack of consistent projects meant that many municipalities did not receive the money, failing to improve the matrix of displacements and the quality of life of people. The demonstrations of 2013, the peak of public dissatisfaction with public transport, erupted. What was presented as a repudiation of the rate increase, in fact was the voice of the streets crying out for better conditions of displacement. Mobility systems were obsolete and below the minimum expected by users. Even in the face of an unfavorable scenario from the point of view of public opinion, some cities took advantage of the opportunity and invested in the bus transportation system, such as Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Fortaleza, Goiânia, Recife and Brasília. The capital of Rio de

Janeiro invested in corridors and, today, reaps the fruits of providing a more efficient displacement means for its population. The corridors of BRT, TransOeste, TransCarioca and TransOlímpica span together about 130 km and carry 450 thousand people daily, with implementation costs of some US$ 1.3 billion. For comparative purposes, line 4 of the subway alone, with 16 km between Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, consumed more than US$ 2.7 billion. According to the Association of Urban Transportation Companies – NTU, there are 19 BRT systems in operation in 9 cities of 7 states. There are also approximately 200 projects for creating exclusive corridors.

However, many are not yet running. The total extension of the corridors reaches 1,000 kilometers, covering 61 cities in 22 states. With the country plunged for years into an economic crisis, it is difficult to expect the completion of many projects to revitalize the urban fabric in the short term. However, perhaps this is the appropriate time to review the process so that these projects will be executed in the near future. After approval by a large part of the population, BRT corridors in Rio de Janeiro

suffer from vandalism, lack of investments and lack of a public policy that carries out stopped or incomplete works. Like the BRT Transbrasil corridor, which, after months of stagnation due to lack of responsibility by the city council, has finally been resumed and the delivery of the first stretch is expected before June 2018. However, despite the investments in infrastructure and the formulation of public policies aimed at mobility being the responsibility of the government, something that deserves enough attention from the operators is the quality of the service offered. According to the 2017 Urban Mobility survey, conducted by the National Transportation Confederation and NTU, the reduction of fares is the great challenge pointed out by passengers. For 75.1% of the interviewees, the reduction of the fares is a primordial condition so that they use the bus instead of another means. The solution could be a discussion on public tariff, on the remuneration and new alternatives of financing and prioritization of public transport. As the perception of the user is bad, operators need to focus, above all, on reinventing the sector, since the tariff model imposed by the public power is exhausted and does not provide acceptable conditions for the great mass that uses public transport daily. Marcopolo, in partnership with Volvo, began the delivery of the first units of the 203 buses of the Torino Low Entry model ordered by Metro Bus, an urban public transport system in Panama City, Central America. The acquisition was carried out by MiBus, a transportation operator in the country. The new buses have high safety standards and greater comfort for the user, providing a better travel experience. The first units were delivered to Transportes Masivo Panamá S.A. in October. The acquisition of this new fleet is primarily intended to cover demand in the North and South Corridors and to continue to improve user mobility in Panama City. MiBus General Manager, Ignasi Armengol, said that with the arrival of these first buses, a major shift is underway to improve the city’s public transportation system with a new fleet that will allow a more comfortable, safer and more effective service , as well as increasing the capacity of

the service to cover the demand in the North and South Corridors, which will later be accompanied by other projects to jointly address the transformation phase of the public transportation system. “The buses possess the world’s best standards of quality, manufactured and assembled in Brazil by Marcopolo, whose products meet the specifications necessary to offer a comfortable and safe journey. Meet the Metro Bus The system is operated by the MiBus company, which since 2015 has been managed by the Panamanian government who took over the company’s operations (remaining under the umbrella of the Panama Metro) and hired the First Transit company from the US, a First Group subsidiary, to manage the service. Metro Bus is the bus transportation system that operates in the districts of Panama and San Miguelito, beginning its operations on December 28, 2010, through the so-called South Corridor. Today it has a fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles that travel along the main roads of the Panama

City (Via España, Via Simón Bolívar or Transísstmica, Via Ricardo J. Increasingly, women have become more representative in male-dominated labor market areas. In Brazil, the numbers of women who drive buses may still be timid when compared to men working in transportation, but indicate a paradigm break within a predominantly male professional universe. Now, it is in Argentina that women begin to conquer their space. Ana Gabriela Cruz and Mariana Protzer are the first

women to drive long-distance buses in Misiones, an Argentine province located in the northeast of the country. Since they were little girls, they liked to drive. First motorbikes, cars and even trucks, but the desire was to transport passengers. Now they are the pioneers in the country. The opportunity that allows them to realize their dream emerged in the company Crucero Del Norte. “Before there was no possibility

of sitting in the driver’s seat, something always meant for men. We did the driving test and, like any other, we have our place today”, says Mariana, a driver for six years who reconciles the profession with family and care for her eight-year-old son. “Our work is very well received by people and I consider it to be an open door to greater gender equality. I think we are reaching other countries that already

A classic of Argentine gastronomy, Choripan, whose name originates from the combination of “chouriço” (sausage), with “pan” (bread), can be consumed as a quick meal or be the starter dish served in the famous Argentine roast. Conquest of international market presence From the first shipment to Uruguay in 1961 to the present, Marcopolo has always shown its vocation for exporting. Since the beginning, investments in international fairs and competitions and the search for space in the foreign market have

been constantly intensified. In 1974, efforts to expand to new markets, with positive results in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe, resulted in the achievement of the first Export Award, conferred by the ADVB (Association of Sales Di-

rectors of Brazil) in Rio Grande do Sul. As the 1980s approached, the export policy reached significant levels. In the first half of 1979 the company exported the equivalent of US$ 12 million, a volume higher than the 1978 total.
