Charting Success for SouthCoast Business

A New Year, a New Renewed Commitment

As we welcome the dawn of a New Year, One SouthCoast Chamber is thrilled to embark on a journey of enhancement and innovation in our support for the local business community. This moment of transition not only signifies a fresh start but also provides us with the opportunity to reflect on our foundational mission: to empower and uplift the South Coast business community through a diverse range of programs and activities designed specifically to help businesses thrive.

In many ways, Chambers of Commerce represent a traditional approach to fostering business relationships. We firmly believe in the power of personal connections—be it in person or through virtual platforms—to facilitate the growth and betterment of local businesses and the communities we call home. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, we find ourselves surrounded by social media and digital communication tools that make it easy to reach out to others at the click of a button. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn have revolutionized how we connect, creating a sense of immediacy and accessibility. However, despite the convenience of these tools, the reality remains that we tend to engage in business with those we know personally or with individuals who are trusted by our close connections. This truth, though it may seem “old school,” is a critical aspect of how successful business relationships are formed and nurtured.

As we step into the New Year, we are excited to offer a myriad of opportunities for our members to meet, connect, and collaborate. Whether

through networking events, workshops, or community gatherings, we are dedicated to creating spaces where meaningful relationships can flourish. The Chamber is resolute in our mission to be the premier connector in the region, tirelessly working every day to empower our members and help them achieve their unique goals. Our ongoing strategic planning initiatives has carried forward into 2025, with an unwavering focus on meeting the needs of you—our valued members. This commitment is not merely a statement; it is the very reason for our existence. Anything short of this would undermine our purpose and the trust you place in us.

At One SouthCoast Chamber, we firmly believe in the “power of many.” We take pride in being the second-largest Chamber in the Commonwealth, representing and advocating for the small businesses that make up the majority of our membership. As we look ahead into 2025, our resolve is to amplify our influence in public policy areas that support business growth. We aim to enhance our numerous initiatives aimed at improving the livability and quality of life in the magnificent South Coast. Whether our focus is on education, arts and culture, economic development, or legislative advocacy, our work will always be guided by the needs and aspirations of the business community. We are committed to harnessing the collective strength of our members to drive positive change and ensure success.

Moreover, we recognize that the landscape of business is continuously evolving, and with it, the challenges and opportunities we face. As we navigate this dynamic environment,

our Chamber is dedicated to being a reliable resource for all our members. We are here to provide guidance, support, and innovative solutions tailored to your unique circumstances. Whether you are a seasoned business owner or just starting your entrepreneurial journey, we want you to know that you are not alone. Together, we can navigate the complexities of the business world and emerge stronger.

One thing is certain: our success cannot be achieved without your active participation and support. Your membership and engagement are vital to our mission of fostering growth and prosperity for all businesses in our community. This year, we ask for just one resolution from you: to leverage our resources, attend our events, and actively engage with fellow members. By doing so, you will not only help yourself succeed but also contribute to the overall strength of our business community. We are here for you—ready to listen, support, and advocate on your behalf.

As we embark on this exciting new chapter together, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the trust and confidence you place in us. Your involvement empowers us to serve you better, and we look forward to a year filled with collaboration, growth, and success. Let us make 2025 a remarkable year for the South Coast business community!

January Policy Pulse

Happy New Year to you, and Happy New Legislative Session to our State legislators! On January 1st, the state legislature was sworn into the 194th General Court, marking the start of the next session. This marks the beginning of the twoyear session that will significantly influence the direction of policies impacting businesses across the Commonwealth.

While there was relatively little turnover in the state legislature, here on the South Coast, we are welcoming four new legislators to our region, an unprecedented number of first-year legislators for our area. Each of these newcomers brings unique experiences and insights that will undoubtedly enrich discussions and decisions about addressing the challenges and opportunities we face.

Let’s delve deeper into our newly elected officials, starting with our newest State Senator, Kelly Dooner. Senator Dooner is a Republican from Taunton representing the Third Bristol and Plymouth District, which includes Taunton, Berkley, Dighton, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Carver, Marion, Middleborough, and Wareham. In 2021, Kelly Dooner was elected to the Taunton City Council, becoming the youngest female councilor ever to serve. During her campaign for state senate, Senator Dooner was notably vocal in criticizing state spending, particularly surrounding the state’s emergency shelter system and the right-to-shelter law. Her advocacy for responsible fiscal policies suggests that she will be a champion for transparency, accountability, and thoughtful governance in her new role.

Next, we turn to Steven J. Ouellette, the newly elected Democratic State Representative for the 8th Bristol District. The district encompasses parts of Acushnet, Freetown, Westport, and portions of Fall River and New Bedford. Prior to his election to the state legislature, Ouellette served on the Westport Select Board, in-

cluding a term as vice-chair. With over three decades of experience as a facilities director for regional public schools, Ouellette has a longstanding commitment to public service.

From Somerset, we welcome Justin Thurber, a Republican representing the 5th Bristol District, which includes Dighton, Somerset, and parts of Swansea and Taunton. Representative Thurber served in the United States Air Force Reserves. Throughout his campaign, Representative Thurber emphasized his focus on immigration, parental rights, education, small businesses, taxes, essential workers, freedoms, and government transparency. Mark D. Sylvia is the newly elected state representative for the 10th Bristol District, which includes Acushnet, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, and Rochester. Representative Sylvia graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1992 and earned his degree from American University. Representative Sylvia has hit the ground running thanks to his extensive experience in state government, including as the director of green communities, the commissioner of the Department of Energy Resources, and the undersecretary of energy. Mark has spent the last ten years as an executive in the private sector and has a strong understanding of how important the role of business is in our local economy. His expertise will be instrumental in shaping policies that foster sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship.

We are eager to collaborate with the newly elected legislators as they begin their tenure. They will bring fresh perspectives and energy to the challenges facing the business community. Their leadership and commitment will be crucial as we address pressing issues such as workforce development, housing, infrastructure, regulatory reform, education, and more.

Over the next few weeks, we will begin to see legislative priorities form for the new legislative session as thousands of bills will be filed. The Chamber will be sure to focus on some key areas, including housing, workforce development, transportation and infrastructure, education, economic development, energy policies, and government spending.

We look forward to working with our members, community partners, new legislators, and our returning legislators to ensure we are moving the needle on policy issues that impact the business community here on the South Coast. Here’s to a productive year ahead!
