THE CORNERSTONE OF SUCCESS
FOREFRONT’S COMMITMENT TO EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Brendan Buffa | Corporate Director of Communications
Employee engagement has become a defining feature of Forefront’s approach to fostering a thriving workplace, and according to Gary Pollack, CPXP, Partner with Forefront, it’s a strategy the company cannot afford to overlook.
“We’ve found that prioritizing employee engagement leads to tangible benefits— lower absenteeism, higher productivity, and reduced turnover,” Pollack said. “It’s not just about avoiding challenges; it’s about building a culture where employees feel safe, supported, and inspired to excel in both their careers and lives.”
Since initiating its first engagement survey in 2021, Forefront has made remarkable progress. Initially, 20% of employees were classified as “actively disengaged,” a
group described by Gallup as being dissatisfied with their work and workplace. Through a combination of targeted initiatives and cultural shifts, that figure has dropped to 10%, well below Gallups’ indicated national average of 16%. Pollack attributes this success to fostering an open atmosphere of trust and belonging while addressing issues head-on.
“Engagement starts from the top and filters through every level of the organization,” he noted.
“It’s part of our DNA—it’s who we are and what we do daily.”
This daily practice includes morning huddles, shift meetings, celebrating successes, and maintaining open lines of communication.
“It’s the small, consistent actions that add up,” Pollack emphasized. “We’ve built a culture where people feel welcomed into a supportive community and know they have opportunities to grow.”
GALLUP’S 12 QUESTIONS
The company’s progress in its engagement metrics has been striking. Forefront’s Gallup scores have risen steadily, moving from 4.20 to 4.21 in the most recent survey—a notable feat given the difficulty of shifting engagement metrics with a growing workforce. Participation in the surveys has also surged, increasing from 171 employees in 2021 to just under 1,000 today, representing a near 500% growth in engagement.
Q1: I know what is expected of me at work.
Q2: I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right.
Q3: At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.
Q4: In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.
Q5: My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.
Q6: There is someone at work who encourages my development.
Q7: At work, my opinions seem to count.
Q8: The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.
Q9: My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work.
Q10: I have a best friend at work.
Q11: In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress.
Q12: This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow.
Pollack also spoke about the company’s framework for engagement, based on what Gallup calls the “twelve questions.” This blueprint serves as a guide for fostering better connections among employees and between staff and leadership. Forefront categorizes employees into three groups: “rowers” (engaged and enthusiastic), “sitters” (present but unmotivated), and “drillers” (actively disengaged).
“Our goal is to move as many people as possible into the ‘rower’ category,” Pollack said. “This means removing barriers, addressing challenges, and creating an environment where people want to be at work.”
Looking ahead, Forefront remains committed to embedding engagement into every aspect of the employee experience.
“Hope is not a strategy,” Pollack stated firmly. “You can’t just conduct a survey and hope scores will improve. Engagement is a daily effort, and we’re happy to pay that price because it makes Forefront a place where people feel valued and excited to come to work.”
With seven out of eight surveys showing year-over-year improvement, Forefront’s results speak volumes about the company’s dedication to its people. And as Pollack puts it,
It’s a cornerstone of who we are, and we’re proud to live it every day.
FROM THE CEO’s Desk
By Dan Bowen, CEO & Co-Founder
As we continue to evolve, compete, and grow as a premium provider of culinary and support services, it’s more important than ever that we reflect on, understand, and aspire to our company’s motto. This raises key questions: What is our motto? What is its larger meaning? And why do we have a motto at all?
A company motto provides two things: the clarity of who we are and the promise we make to our customers.
AWARDS
Research has shown that the best mottos strengthen company culture, shape associate behavior, and elevate the brand as a whole. A great motto is memorable, simple, emotional, distinctive, and inspirational.
At Forefront, our motto is: “Elevating Every Day.”
While simple in its three words, this phrase holds a deeper, multidimensional meaning that reflects both our work and our purpose:
For ourselves, it means elevating our performance every day. It’s an aspirational call to get a little better every day, much like the relentless pursuit of greatness seen in championship sports teams.
For our clients, it means elevating the experience of patients, residents, students, and staff. We do this through our talented people, proven programs, and innovative technology that deliver enhanced outcomes and results — all of which ultimately enhance our clients’ reputations and brands.
For our clients’ customers, it means elevating the quality of their nutrition and environments, directly impacting their care, safety, and well-being.
At a more subtle level, it also means elevating the everyday. Cooking, cleaning, and repair work may seem routine, but these essential support services have a profound impact. By elevating these daily tasks, we uplift the experiences of those we serve.
As we look to the future, I hope to spotlight many of you in future issues of The Insider as you bring our motto to life. Your contributions provide value to our customers, our team, and the communities we serve.
Come join me in Elevating Every Day!

Elevating Floor Care in Environmental Services
Susan Waller | Director, Administrative Operations
The first thing people notice when they walk into a building is often the floors. A clean, well-maintained floor sets the tone for the entire environment and leaves a lasting impression. That’s why we’re thrilled to share how we’re elevating floor care across our facilities.
In 2024, we introduced autonomous floor-cleaning robots at Troy Regional Medical Center (Troy, AL) and Springhill Medical Center (Mobile, AL). These cutting-edge tools provide consistent, efficient cleaning, allowing our teams to focus on high-touch areas and other critical tasks. As we evaluate additional robotic options, we’re carefully matching the right technology to each facility’s unique needs. Different brands and models bring distinct advantages, and we’re committed to finding the best fit for every location. Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to expand this innovative program to even more sites.
This quarter, we also upgraded our floor care solutions with new products designed to enhance quality and efficiency. Partnering with Spartan Chemical, we introduced On an’ On, a high-solid floor finish that creates a dense, glossy coat with fewer applications—perfect for areas with limited time or access. Facilities like Barrett Hospital & Healthcare (Dillon, MT), Springhill Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan (Troy, MI) are already seeing fantastic results and receiving positive feedback.
Additionally, we rolled out restorative products Sunswept and Bounce Back, which extend wax life and restore shine between coatings. These are proving effective at Major Health Partners (Shelbyville, IN) and Arkansas Heart Hospital (Little Rock, AR), boosting both performance and satisfaction.
To support these efforts, we’ve also launched a dedicated Floorcare Project Team. These experts specialize in deep cleaning, buffing, and waxing, delivering exceptional results at facilities such as Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Henry County Hospital (New Castle, IN).
With these advancements in floor care—from cutting-edge robotics to innovative products and specialized expertise—we’re redefining what’s possible in environmental services. These initiatives reflect our commitment to excellence, ensuring every facility we serve leaves a lasting impression of

FACILITY MANAGEMENT
Building Cohesion and Compliance The ‘Back to Basics’ Initiative for FM
Susan Waller | Director, Administrative Operations
As we step into 2025, Forefront’s Facilities Management team is introducing the Back to Basics initiative to strengthen core practices and ensure compliance across all facilities. This initiative kicks off with a focus on Life Safety Compliance, a critical pillar for maintaining safe and effective environments. By revisiting fundamental principles and integrating innovative technologies, this effort underscores that a return to the basics can accelerate, rather than impede progress. Collaboration across all departments is key, uniting us in the shared mission to protect patients, staff, and visitors.
What is Life Safety Compliance?
Life Safety Compliance involves preparing facilities to prevent and respond effectively to emergencies, particularly fires. It includes maintaining fire prevention systems, ensuring clear evacuation routes, adhering to building codes, and updating policies to align with evolving best practices and regulations. This proactive approach not only ensures compliance but also strengthens our ability to safeguard lives and protect our spaces before issues arise.
About the Initiative
Why It Matters to Everyone
While FM takes the lead, maintaining safety and compliance is a shared responsibility. Every department plays a vital role:
Fire Safety: FM ensures systems such as sprinklers, alarms, and smoke detectors are fully operational. Environmental Service teams keep hallways and exits clear to support evacuations, while culinary teams minimize risks by maintaining kitchen equipment and proper storage practices.
Emergency Evacuation: Facility Management develops and updates evacuation plans to accommodate patient mobility and medical needs. Environmental Services and culinary teams support these efforts by keeping routes unobstructed and responding effectively within their areas.
Building Codes and Maintenance: Facility Management ensures facilities meet stringent code requirements, from fire-resistant materials to compartmentalized spaces. Environmental Services contributes by following proper chemical storage protocols, and culinary teams ensure kitchens are compliant and well-organized.
Equipment Maintenance: Facility Management oversees regular testing of fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and backup power systems. Other teams support by keeping these areas accessible and free of clutter.
Throughout 2025, FM leaders will host quarterly discussions with hourly teams to share insights, address challenges, and celebrate contributions. Together, we are building a stronger, safer foundation—blending essential practices with forward-thinking innovation to achieve operational excellence.

Strengthening Our Government Services Division
Welcoming Ace Burt and Kathleen Amick
Kathleen Amick | Business Development Manager, Government Services

Backed by 40 years of industry experience and a customerfocused, process-driven approach, Ace is well-positioned to lead this growing sector.
Ace’s career began with J&J Worldwide Services, where he held roles such as Quality Manager, Project Manager, and Director of Operations. As President and CEO of PCSI, he transformed the company from significant debt to $180 million in annual revenue, earning national recognition for employing disabled veterans and managing contracts in 27 states.
Joining him is Kathleen Amick (Kat), who assumes the role of Business Development Manager, Government Services. Kat brings extensive experience in logistics, supply chain management, and international markets. She previously managed Base Operations Support (BOS) and Dining Facility (DFAC) proposals for Agility in
Kuwait and Dubai. Upon returning to the U.S., she served as Business Development Director for Sodexo’s West Coast operations, managing federal food service contracts. Her background in domestic and international markets will play a vital role in Forefront’s strategic growth.
Recently, Forefront was awarded two Defense Health Agency (DHA) MultiAward Task Order Contracts (MATOCs): the Hospital Environmental Services Contracts (HEC) and the FirmFixed Price Contract for Medical Facility Operation and Maintenance Services. These contracts will support task orders involving multiple Department of Defense hospitals, with opportunities for substantial growth.
The first HEC task order is already underway, covering medical facilities at Camp Pendleton, Twenty-Nine Palms, and China Lake in California. Looking ahead, the division is focused on growth in Environmental Services (EVS), Facilities Operations and Maintenance, Integrated Facilities Management (IFM), and Base Operations Support (BOS).
With a talented leadership team and a growing pipeline of opportunities, Forefront’s Government Services division is poised for significant expansion and continued success.
