LITERATURE REVIEW

‘SNOWDON AVIARY, LONDON ZOO’ - CEDRIC PRICE -

Snowdon Aviary is a Grade II listed structure in London Zoo. It was conceived by Lord Snowdon, designed by Cedric Price, Frank Newby, and Antony Armstrong-Jones, and built in 1964. When it opened in 1965 it was Britain’s first walk-through aviary. The iconic design, which is a prominent feature on the Regent’s Canal and from Primrose Hill, was inspired by the graceful movements of birds. In November 2016, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) announced that Foster + Partners are to overhaul the aviary, remaining its iconic structure and transforming it into a walk-through primate enclosure. This work will remove the aviary from Historic England’s at Risk Register.

‘REIMAGINE THE CHINESE HUTONG’ - MVRDV -

For centuries Hutongs have been the standard form of settlement for Chinese populations that moved from the countryside to the growing cities. The settlement combines the life values and organizational model of classic rural villages at high urban densities. The Hutong guaranteed the classical intimacy of the family life within denser circumstances. It combined privacy with density and flexibility with organization. From its origins to today, hutongs evolved according to changing demands over time. In this era of globalisation and urban development, how can they evolve and adapt this organically grown urban fabric to current and future needs to adapt with modern urbanism.

‘CENTRE POMPIDOU’ - RICHARD ROGERS AND RENZO PIANO -

Most contemporary cultural institution has integration into everyday urban life. With the capacity to express and to contain public life, the cultural institution plays a crucial role in the formation of democratic civil society. It can be either inclusive and supportive to social changes, or it can be exclusive and effective tool for capital gain. Which always they are somewhere in-between. The Centre Georges Pompidou by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers is an inside-out landmark that drew global attention on high tech architecture which also few of the pioneers on a clear social direction a Placemaking Architecture at its early years.

‘NGASEM BIRD MARKET’ - YOGYAKARTA -

Ngasem Market have existed since 1809. This is evidenced by a photo showing Ngasem Market with its main merchandise in the form of birds. Around the 1960s, this market became increasingly synonymous with birds after bird traders from Beringharjo Market moved to this place. In 2010, Ngasem Market was relocated to the Yogyakarta Animal and Ornamental Plants Market or Pasty, Yogyakarta City. The relocation process was lively with Cultural Carnival which was attended by 287 traders. The relocation was done in order to maintain a conducive buying and selling atmosphere as well as preventive measures to protect the Taman Sari tourist attraction.

Kuala Lumpur city centre holds many rich green concentration areas such as the lake garden, Kuala Lumpur eco park and Tasik Titiwangsa, which attracts many species of birds; that stop, rest and a few would nest, during their migration travels. Malaysia’s geographical context is part of ‘East Asian Australian Flyway’ migration map, where birds travel along this migratory path to escape cold weather. As they pass through we can find rare birds species in these green urban setting. History recorded that birding was a cultural past activity where people enjoy locally in Kuala Lumpur as well as at the proposed site in Kampung Baru. They would build small aviaries at their home compound or kept birds in traditional rattan and wooden cages. There were bird singing competition occasionally held around Kuala Lumpur before in the late 90s which now are close to none. Today this cultural related event is still being held at our neighboring country Thailand which they host one of the largest bird-singing contest every year. This cultural events and activity, once important to the local community of Kuala Lumpur had faded, however, could be revitalized in favourable ways if pursued.

About 831 species of bird species in which 62 of these species are endangered were recorded in Malaysia. Following Clements Checklist (2018) on Birds of the World, these species are listed in taxonomic order, know to be the designation of bird species according to families classified systematically in scientific order. The total count in recording of these species has been tagged in categories of (1) accidental of rare; 80 count, (2) endemic ; 15 count and (3) introduced (17 count). Not all species are tagged, which some species are common and native which then makes the number for total count. 62 of these species are endangered. Malaysia’s diverse tropical setting of muddy mangroves and misty mountain are habitats to varieties of bird species. This country also welcomes around 120 migratory birds travelling along the Australasian cross-migratory path which they stop by at either coastal mangroves, lowland rainforest or mountain forest which covered half of Malaysia’s land. These birds can be observed at most parks and forest reserves around the Peninsular and Malaysia Borneo. Initiatives from various nature and conservation bodies in regards to birding has lately been active in promoting the appreciation of this wildlife. Malaysia had now emerged as a birding sanctuary.Notable cultural and organization setup which take into their own hands around appreciation and awareness of birds in Malaysia is the Malaysia Nature Society or known as MNS. Bird Conservation Council of Malaysia is setup as part of MNS as a special division to nurture birdlife in various subjects from conservation to appreciation of this species. There are also small communal based group such as MY Garden Bird Watch and Wild Bird Club Malaysia which they hosted various events such as the yearly Raptor Watch in Tanjung Tuan, Malacca.

It benefits the vitality of a place and its local communities. It creates incentives in preserving existing nature around local measures. Malaysia offers unique birding experience. Birdlife habitats in different ecological zones, promotes birding the culture thus benefits ecotourism; domestically enriches the context and places they encounter.

Léon Krier’s diagram knits together public and private buildings which spaces around, between and within are publicly accessible ‘realm’, thus supports settings for public life and interaction.

The final design proposal had incorporate birding culture as part of this new communal building in Kampung Baru which were enhanced by the sense of place theory and the renewed public realm.

URBAN BIRDING in kuala lumpur “Birds are tools which aid to address environmental issues and creating awareness thus educating people to care about nature and its flora and fauna. Studies are conducted toward birding out of interest in communal and sociological science.” Law & Lynch, 1990
