BHARGAVI NAGRECHA Acting Editor (editor@one8one.net) The first month of 2016 has been a very challenging period for all of us. I have come to understand that life is not a straight line. It is not a timeline of checklists and tasks that need to be completed before a certain duration. The New Year period is always one where you compare yourself to other people and wonder why you have not reached similar achievements, targets and highlights. We unnessarily feel pressured to achieve and complete a list of things before a certain age. It always puzzles me as to why we force students to choose a program right out of high school at the tender age of 18. Shouldn't we give them some time and space to explore themselves and check out what inspires them? Jack Canfield once said, "The simplest, clearest way to get started on knowing what you want is by getting clear on who you are." How can you expect someone to know what they want to do for the rest of their life at the age of 18? How can you expect them to know themselves and all their likes and dislikes when they have not been given the opportunity to know themselves?

#beloud I have recently met several people who had been forced to accept any job that came their way just because they had invested so much time and money into getting their college degree. They then woke up every morning because they had commitments and responsibilities towards their family who they needed to support. They kept taking the next step, and the nextm until they woke up one morning depressed, unhappy, stressed and completely pressured with their lives. That is why I think we need to remember that we are allowed to backtrack, take time to figure out what inspires us as a person, and I think we often forget that. So make sure you spend your time and opportunities wisely. Say YES to new opportunities and experiences as you may never know where inspiration strikes next!

2048 (iOS, Android)

Digg (iOS)

A new iOS addiction, 2048 has one simple goal — to create a box with the number 2048. You play by sliding together other boxes of the same number, beginning with 2s, so that your digits are always doubling. Two 2s become a 4, and two 4s become an 8. With each slide, a new box appears, each double of the initial one. Download it and give it a try. You'll be hooked.

The Digg app brings you all the news and online content you like to read into one convenient place. It contains an RSS feed reader, which is the big selling point of this free app. In addition to all the blogs and news in your custom feed, Digg also recommends new content of interest. If you need any more reasons to download the app, it is free so that should help.

Mint.com (iOS)

Hyperlapse (iOS, Android)

The website and service Mint.com helps you keep detailed accounts of your finances by connecting to all your financial accounts (and then some) and tracking all the money you earn and spend. The Mint.com app extends the experience so users can keep an eye on their spending better while on the go. The app gives you deep insight into how you're spending your money and whether you're sticking to the budget you've created.

Hyperlapse from Instagram is an app that works in tandem with the Facebookowned photo-sharing service to give you the power to make time-lapsed (i.e. spedup) videos. The app makes creating timelapse videos simpler than ever, although it also works as a video stabiliser, which is pretty neat, too. Hyperlapse is currently only available for iOS, and it's designed for both iPhone and iPad. It does only one thing, but it's impressive and fun to use.

Interview

Sarah Jackson of Deco Arabia

Dubai is home to many creative and artistic people, and Sarah Jackson is one of them. Jackson is a passionate photographer, painter, printmaker and fulltime art teacher. When Jackson moved to Dubai, she witnessed the fascinating and quick development of the city, which led to her current project, Deco Arabia, which represents the iconic skyscrapers of Dubai in an original and unique style. She follows the simple concept of, “Everything I see, feel and experience.” We had the opportunity to speak to Jackson about her artwork and see what inspires her to do what she does. Tell us about yourself and your work. In 2003, I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA First Class Hons degree in Fine Art. My first

group exhibition, Stepping around Manchester, was held at Scu Bar and that is where my true passion for photography and printmaking started. Moving from a small town in Macclesfield, Cheshire, to a big city was certainly an eye opener.

"I realised that there is a big gap in the UAE market for adorable and original artwork."

Which artists inspire you? Artist such as Liam Spencer, Picasso, Robert Delaunay and Tamara de Lempicka have inspired me.

How was Deco Arabia discovered? Deco Arabia was discovered after an interesting conversation with my friend. We were discussing the similarities between New York's and Dubai’s buildings. Since I have visited New York about five times, I always purchase the 'city scape' postcard from stalls located at Times Square or around Central Park. That’s when I realised that there is a big gap in the UAE market for adorable and original artwork. How do you create the finished product? Every print has been developed from a photograph that I have taken. I then edit the image using filters on Photoshop and then add layers, shapes and text. The screen prints have been done manually by myself through silk screens and printing inks.

What are the future plans for Deco Arabia? Deco Arabia’s first collection is based on Dubai. I would love to expand the collection and produce work on other Arabian countries. What is your view on the art scene in the UAE? Artistry in the UAE is thriving and I want my work to be recognised internationally as well. What is the best piece of advice you would give to younger generations who would like to pursue a career as an artist? Be inspired by everyone and everything and try to record those special moments visually. Having a career as an artist can be challenging. Be patient, be original and, most importantly, enjoy the work you make. by Nazish Munir

My Life Interview

Dimah Shamma From University Failure to Successful Role Model

Confiding in someone outside her family helped Shamma immensely, as she struggled to deal with the pressures of wanting to please her family and keep her scholarship. During her second semester, Shamma was encouraged to aim for the probation pass rate (2.0 GPA). Wanting to do even better, Shamma worked hard and began putting together her own study schedule. “I also had an alternative schedule if the first one didn’t work out or if I got distracted,” she adds proudly. This meant even friendly distractions were accounted for, with Shamma returning to the dorms strictly by 4.30pm to study.

“I don’t like to think of alternatives. I think of one thing and just do it.”

Jumping from academic probation to a near A-grade in just one semester, Dimah Shamma's story is one of success. Studying Marketing at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), Shamma is happy. But this was not always the case. What is the secret behind her rapid transformation? We met up with her over coffee, though she insisted on drinking lemon and mint juice. She says she doesn’t need caffeine. Full of excitement to be arriving at university for the first time last year, Shamma found herself overwhelmed by her new-found freedom. "At first, I was a bit attentive, but then afterwards I started skipping a lot of classes,” she says, admitting she spent a lot of time “going out".

Shamma remembers the first time she went out for shisha in Dubai. She didn’t smoke, but she says it was socialising with friends: “It was nice. I forgot about the time and it was 11pm to 11.30pm—almost curfew. So my dad calls and my parents don’t often call, so I was very nervous." Out with friends and dangerously close to AUS curfew, her dad wasn’t impressed with her behaviour. Shamma adds: “I was scared because I really can't lie to my parents.” This experience sums up Shamma's first semester. Starting the year with four courses (roughly 14 credits), Shamma dropped two classes, down to a lack of dedication to her studies. Scoring a final mark of 1.7 GPA, the minimum score needed for a C- or pass grade, Shamma was put on academic probation. This is where a student with less than ‘good academic standing’ (less than 2.0 GPA), is given extra support. Any student who cannot get above this score in their second (or consecutive semester) is academically dismissed. Meeting her probation officer proved to be the foundation of Shamma's current success. “She told me at some point that she thought that I was a bit depressed,” she says.

Shamma scored a total GPA of 3.6 for the semester: one of the highest grades for Marketing majors in her year. “I literally gasped and I started crying,” she says. Now in her second year at AUS, Shamma currently has an overall GPA of 3.2, having also taken summer classes to pull her overall grade up. Shamma is hoping to do even better this year. Looking to the future, she hopes to get a master’s degree in England, and one day, manage her father’s school in Abu Dhabi. by Izaac cole

How to be THE BEST As young adults and teenagers, we tend to get paranoid that we aren’t good enough. Sometimes even our consciousness can bring us down. We tend to lose hope very easily and give up on our goals and dreams. However, it is time to look past all this negativity that is stored in our heads as it is controlling how we feel.

What about the people you surround yourself with? Do they bring you down, or do they support you and give you advice?

By jumping in at the deep end, you open yourself up to inspiration and motivation wherever you are and you get a purpose for your life. This in turn helps you to boost your self-esteem and confidence.

You should sit down with yourself every once in a while and question the position you are in, the environment you are in, and the people around you. Are you really happy with where you are? If not, you can easily alter these little things and change what you can in order to pursue happiness. You should have time for yourself, to look at yourself and see if you are following your dreams and achieving your life goals.

One of the most important ways to be your best and feel your best is to surround yourself with positive people that motivate you to try harder in life and eventually push you to live your best possible life. But how can you be positive?

How do the environment and people around you affect your ability to achieve your best?

by Latifa Alsaboosi

Well, the best way is to question the environment you put yourself in. Is it healthy for you? Is it affecting you negatively?

TV Shows

TOP TV SHOWS Throughout the Years

TV shows have been monumentally important to the entertainment industry, especially for the past 15 years or so. There are shows of every sub-genre possible today, and great TV shows have come and gone. Here we have tried to compile and highlight some of the best shows over the years. This list is extremely subjective, but to deduce the best show for each year, we have taken into consideration trends, audience ratings, critics’ ratings, awards and cast.

2003 One Tree Hill (7.3 / 10) In the not so quaint town of Tree Hill in North Carolina, half Brothers Lucas and Nathan compete against each other on the basketball court and in the hearts of their high school friends. This show is not as extraordinary as much as it is influential and popular. The show is more about how the audience can identify with the people and relationships within the show. It was thoroughly popular amongst the youth.

2000 CSI (7.9 / 10) A group of forensic experts work together in order to solve crimes in Las Vegas. This show was the beginning of a very important genre: crime drama. The show ran for 15 years and it has had its ups and downs. The plot has always been thick but sometimes seems a little too stretched and there sometimes seems to be a slight repetition with cases. Overall it is a brilliant show, which covers pretty much any crime possible with mind-boggling plot twists.

2001 24 (9.0 / 10) The shows revolves around Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) who is a director of field ops in an anti-terrorist organisation in Los Angeles. Bauer must race the clock to protect his nation and the people he loves from massive disasters. 24 is a spectacular show and once you delve into this world, it is very difficult to come back to reality. The tension and suspense are incredible, and the complex and clever plots never cease to amaze us. It is a franchise with perfect amounts of action, drama and mystery.

2004 House M.D. (8.3 / 10) House is a specialist in diagnostic medicine, and he doesn't like playing by the rules, so he will do whatever it takes to crack the most difficult cases faced by him and his team. House is definitely a show full of drama even more than mystery. House (Hugh Laurie) is one of the most complicated characters in the history of TV shows but is portrayed very well.

2005 Supernatural (8.8 / 10) Sam and Dean join together to fight the forces of evil by following in their father’s footsteps as ‘hunters’ of the inhuman. The interactivity of the show and its cast with the fan base is what makes this show so good. There have been so many episodes where the 44 minutes all revolve around an inside joke. However, the acting and immersive plot almost bring the whole show alive.

2006 Dexter (8.0 / 10) Dexter Morgan is a Miami-based police forensics expert who doesn't just solve cases but also causes them by murdering the guilty and depraved. By doing so he feels justified with his lifestyle choices. The show is a crime drama which also touches on several moral themes. The realistic depiction of Dexter and how scared he really is sells the show the most.

2002 The Wire (9.2 / 10) Set in Baltimore, The Wire centres on the city’s drug scene. The show is very interesting as it is shown through the eyes of both the law enforcement as well as the drug dealers themselves. The Wire won many awards, which it deserved, and it is definitely a serious show. The plot thickens and gets deep very fast on the drug dealing scene in the area. It is a brilliant show for anybody wanting to watch a crime, drama and thriller combined into five seasons.

2007 Gossip Girl (7.5 / 10) Privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York City cannot escape the words of the blogger who always seems to be watching. The show circles the teens succumbing to desire and guilt. It is a show to watch purely for the ridiculously out-there plot and constant back-stabbing.

2008 The Mentalist (8.5 / 10) Driven purely by the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of a serial killer by the name Red John, a fake and famous psychic reveals himself to act as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. Simon Baker, illustrating the brilliant Patrick Jane, does a great job as he can somehow show the audience the perpetual conflict within himself. This show is perfect for crime drama fans who love a bit of comedy, sass and psychology that Baker brings to the show. It is a pretty amazing show to watch.

2012 Scandal (8.1 / 10) Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is a former White House communications director, who starts up her own crisis management firm. She and her team are quick to solve problems before they can even arise. But slowly secrets within the firm are revealed. The show portrays the constant struggle to deal with both personal and work issues. Washington does a great job of representing the empowered character, while adding a little mix of feminism into the mix.

2009 The Good Wife (8.4 / 10) 2013 Orphan Black (8.3 / 10)

Alicia, a former state’s attorney, has been a good wife to her husband until a corruption scandal sends him behind bars. Now Alicia must fend for herself and her family by working as a litigator in a law firm. The best thing about this show is the consistency — it is constantly surprising and riveting. The Good Wife’s narrative in quite diverse and engrossing. It is an enjoyable show for pretty much anyone who likes crime, drama and mystery all mixed into one creative explosion.

2010 Sherlock (8.8 / 10) Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) has moved in with John Watson (Martin Freeman), a soldier recovering from PTSD, who then helps when he consults on criminal cases with the local police. Another adaptation of the great Sherlock Holmes stories that have left audiences in awe. The nature of the characters is very ambiguous at first but is slowly revealed throughout the 90-minute episodes. The show is brilliant for its constant plot twists and suspense. The exceptional acting glues the show together perfectly.

2011 Game of Thrones (9.3 / 10) Several noble families go head to head in order to gain control over the land of Westeros. This show has been one of the most popular shows ever. One can expect tremendous acting, drama, suspense and gore. It is definitely a more explicit television show but is it is quite entertaining. It beats its thick competition with the most unpredictable plot ever.

A street-smart girl is thrown into a convincing conspiracy after she witnesses a girl committing suicide, who looks exactly like her. Orphan Black explores many dark themes whilst being the first amazing sci-fi TV show in a very long time. The storyline of the show is quite a skeptical of the government’s potential actions, while the plot becomes perplexing at times but eventually always leaves us in amazement.

2014 The Flash (7.7 / 10) Young Barry Allen’s life stopped the minute his mother was murdered. The true killer never found, its mystery obsessed Barry, driving him to become a forensic scientist. But when a freak lightning bolt hits a nearby shelf in his lab, Barry receives super-speed, becoming The Flash. The show is quite refreshing as it shows the viewers an unadulterated version of a superhero who is is still discovering his powers, learning what he can do.

2015 Daredevil (8.6 / 10) Daredevil is a blind superhero who uses his other, heightened, senses to ‘see’ what is around him. He is a defence attorney for only those who are innocent in the day but by night he is a crime fighting vigilante. The show has a similar concept to that of Arrow but this is not a bad thing. The show has several nail-biting action scenes filmed very nicely to depict how the superhuman feels when in a fight and how he knows what is going on around him.

Food Blog

The Scran Line:

"You’ll need to have a good eye for detail, think creatively and challenge yourself."

Nick Makrides

If you like baking, eating cupcakes, cookies, pastries or anything resembling sweets then you have to stop what you're doing and read the next few lines. The Scran Line is an amazing blog/ website created by Aussie Nick Makrides. The end result is spectacular as you are basically combining a talented pastry chef and an awesome graphic designer. The best thing about his website is that he not only makes it easy by teaching you the tricks of the trade but also has videos for each and every single recipe, so it is super easy to follow him and recreate the item. Trust us when we say it is simple and quite frankly quite addictive. It also helps that Makrides is an amazing guy with the sweetest heart and he believes in educating his audience on the importance of loving, accepting and being confident in who are they are as a person. How did you get into baking? I have grown up around two amazing cooks, my mum and grandma. I watched them cook and develop a love of food from a young age. After high school I studied graphic design but after a year of sitting at a desk I craved a career in something that was a little more hands-on. That's when I went to study cooking for a year. After spending two weeks in France and witnessing how the French had mastered pastries, I came back home and decided I wanted to make pastries for a living. Name five favourite ingredients that you can’t live without. Salt—simply for its flavour. Sugar—does a lot more in baking than just simply add sweetness. Dill—I am going through a dill phase. Cheese—because it's cheese. Smoked salmon—my mum and I make this delicious treat we've called Salmon Delight (recipe on my website). What do you think food blogging will look like in five years? Will it still be around? This is a really interesting question and I can only really guess. I began my food career by reading a lot of food blogs back before YouTube was popular. That’s where I learned about how food is presented in

photography, how recipes are written and also how every food has a story behind it. Fast-forward three years and I discovered YouTube and one of the first food YouTubers I began watching was Laura Vitale. She is simply amazing. The online food community is awesome as it has opened our eyes to the different ways food is prepared all across the globe. I think food blogging will still be around but food has definitely moved to YouTube in a big way. What do you think are the most important skills to have as a baker? I think that it is so important to love what you do and if you don't truly enjoy it, you'll find it too difficult to push through the tough times. Being a baker can be physically and mentally exhausting, but it's also incredibly rewarding. You’ll need to have a good eye for detail, think creatively and challenge yourself. What is your favourite kitchen gadget? My trusty ice cream scoop! It's the easiest way to scoop batter into your cupcake tin and get the same-looking, perfect cupcake every time. What’s one piece of baking advice you’d like to share with our readers? Three pieces of advice I give to everyone, especially if you're a beginner: 1: Have everything prepared and measured out before you start. 2: Baking is a science, every ingredient plays a part in the recipe. Super Heroes

Female Comic Superheros: Femme Fatales or Fairytale Maidens? With the latest trailer being released of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans all over the world are gearing up to see their favourite comic book characters come to life. When the movie was announced for its production, fans had been wondering who from the Justice League will be included, as the movie will show the initiation of the Justice League. Soon after the movie producers let it out that the cast will include Ben Affleck as Batman, Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, and Gal Gabot as Wonder Woman. The inclusion of Wonder Woman was necessary as she is considered to be one of the major characters of the Justice League. Wonder Woman hasn’t been on the big screen in a long time. It was also announced that Wonder Woman will have a solo movie in the future. Comics have always encouraged diversification of women’s powers in all aspects of their lives—be it a mother taking care of her child and protecting the family, or an assassin assigned to take down a well known and successful detective. We, however, cannot say that comics are innocent of the objectification of these women. Wonder Woman is shown to wear short tights that don’t protect her in any way possible. Laural Lance is shown as wearing a black fishnet and the Black Widow in a tight, body-hugging leather suit. These objectifications are further multiplied and the characters are at times over-simplified in order to cater to a large, gullible fan base. The costume of Wonder Woman in the upcoming movie, shows Gal in a short skirt, which seems even more unfunctional than before. It would be nice to see a female comic character whose origins are well explored instead of the usual, pretty, doe-eyed girl, clueless in the beginning and set to save the world. The Marvel Universe has an abundance of female characters who have already made a mark on the Hollywood industry. Moviegoers were in love with Storm for her compassion and loyalty, and with Jean Grey for her exceptional strength and humour.

"COMICS HAVE ALWAYS ENCOURAGED DIVERSIFICATION OF WOMEN'S POWERS IN ALL ASPECTS OF their LIves."

It is sad that characters like Zatanna, Hawkgirl, and Black Widow, who have sufficient mystery and charm, don't have their own movies or TV shows. Strangely, enough negative female comic book characters have been given their dues unlike their nemeses. Catwoman, Mystique, Talia Al Ghul, and Harley Quinn are a few examples of characters who have been given their own solo movies or are slated for future projects. We are happy to announce the launch of Supergirl a.k.a Kara Zor-El, who escapes planet Krypton to protect her cousin, Superman. Kara is now living as an adult in National City and is working for media mogul Cat Grant. We hope and expect more female-centric comic book solo movies in the future. Now, even though it may seem like a far-away possibility, a girl can dream, right? by Suha Sabith

32 Cars

Car Psyche 101 The window of the soul may just be through your car window even when it’s tinted

Toyota Prius

BMW

Your economical Prius is revealing more than your desire for a lower gas bill and high mileage requirement. Typically, you would be a 30 to 50-year-old father of minimum two children, and are only interested in getting to that basketball game on time, with no concern about driving skill, or the fact that you are going at 100 kph in the fast lane. To cover up the eggshell, bald appearance of your car, you claim to be protecting the environment and show off the technologically advanced interior of the car. However, it may be hard to hear you through all that road noise.

Mini Cooper

The cutest car around could label you as the spoilt but friendly rich girl, who is not the BMW her parents are, but surely is not far down the line. You go to brunches, are too exclusive and established in your career of online fashion blogging. Although you may claim to be ecologically friendly while carrying that snake-skin bag, the real reason for your choice of car is that you cannot be the sort to load your friends into a car, and rather have a group of three girls who have learnt to synchronise their eye-brow raises with you. Also, you knew 2015 would be the year Justin Bieber made his comeback.

The flash of your car is probably blinding you from the scowls of others as you pass by. However you must be thinking, “Why isn’t there a separate lane for the best cars?” Mostly male and indulgent when it comes to suits and perfumes, basically anything that will highlight your salary. Most people know you as the top dog and half your obnoxious attitude comes from the fact that you work in sales. And if a female drives a BMW? Good job on marrying rich.

Prado

Your gaudy and power-hoarding exterior is just a cover-up for the soft interior. Everybody knows who you are because of the huge lettering on the side door, or the grille which looks more like a WWE Championship belt. You either have a large family and the most off-roading you will do is driving onto a pavement by accident, or you dramatically feel the urge to swerve into the desert and make your way into the sunset like the man you are.

At the "horseshoe" corner, you'll experience a G-force of up to 4.5 G and, before the Martineau corner, you'll reach a top speed as high as 135 kph. 10. Ride down the Corviglia flow trail Over the past few years, St. Moritz's local mountain Corviglia has become a veritable mountain bike paradise. This transformation owes much to its new flow trails and "mountain bike roller coaster" with banked curves, corrugations and jumps. The Corviglia flow trail is the most famous and is also suitable for less experienced riders. But be warned: the breathtaking panoramic views might distract you!

Cover Story

"Salt is a very basic ingredient, it’s the simplest thing people can relate to."

The SALT Girls In 2013, two girls from the Gulf who loved cooking and eating outdoors got tired of ‘burning burgers in the desert’ and decided to create a food movement that would celebrate the open spaces of the UAE with a simple yet premium dining experience. Amal Al Marri, a designer and event creator, and Deem Albassam, a food and beverage entrepreneur, called this new movement Salt—paying their respects to a simple, fundamental ingredient of life and good food. While they procured a pair of Airstream trailers and the licensing necessary for the UAE’s first mobile food experience, Al Marri and Albassam travelled around the country to listen to their community of

‘Salters'—first identified on social media—to understand what was missing from the country’s dining landscape. As the UAE’s first homegrown, pop-up dining concept, created with passion by its founders, Salt has created a meeting point for like-minded individuals who are active, innovative, creative, and community-minded. It’s a destination that makes UAE residents feel like tourists, and tourists feel like residents in the know. Our team had the opportunity to sit with Amal Al Marri to learn more about the Salt business, the concept, how the two women have evolved over time, and what they have planned for the future.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves We are “foodpreneurs", who believe in creating independent concepts and never taking the easy path of franchising existing concepts. Deem Al Bassam studied Marketing in college and has been in the restaurant business since 2009 with her concept Switch, which is located in the Dubai Mall. Meanwhile, I have a background in interior design, event management and experience creations. Together we started our partnership in 2014 and created Salt. The way we work is simple—Deem makes the good food, and I make sure everyone knows about it. It’s a tough job, but it wouldn't be exciting if it were too easy. How did you two come up with the concept for Salt? We wanted to merge both of our strengths, Deem being in the food business while I’m interested in events and creating experiences. Winter was approaching and we felt there was a lack of options in the outdoor food scene. People believe that it’s always going to be too hot in this part of the region, but we had a different idea about that and wanted to break that perception. With that in mind we created the lifestyle movement Salt. What do you mean by a lifestyle movement? Salt is more than just a burger place where you eat quickly and go. We take pride in creating a lifestyle where our staff greet our guests as part of the Salt family, calling everyone ‘Salters’, and going that extra mile to make sure everyone

enjoys their experience. We also host events to build our bond with the community, highlight new talent, and give back to our loyal Salters who have supported us so much since we began. Last year, we transformed our Dubai space into an event location for a collection launch of Kenzo Paris and it was a huge success, it was a great way to portray Salt in a new light. We want people to enjoy the outdoor spaces, which is why we created destinations in both beaches and parks. You can really just come hang out with family, friends and have really good food of course. How did you choose the name? We wanted something very simple; we wanted something that everyone can relate to, so we came up with the name Salt, as it is a very basic ingredient. It’s the simplest thing people can relate to. For example, when you ask people about how life would be without salt, they’d say something along the lines of it wouldn’t have much of a taste. That’s how the name came to mind. Before we officially started anything, we began a campaign known as #FindSalt. It meant finding things that mean the most to our audience or finding places they like to go to. We distributed 100 salt shakers to random people and we asked them to take pictures with it in places or with people that meant a lot to them. That’s how we mostly thought of the location and what messages we wanted to deliver through Salt, even prior to anything. So whatever we are doing is because people asked for it years ago.

"Stay naïve, stay foolish and never let anyone tell you how to do things."

How did you come up with the menu? For the menu, we really wanted something that was easy to make, because we run the kitchen from a truck and there isn’t too much space. We chose sliders rather than burgers because we wanted things that people could share. That is why, when you come to Salt, we give you two portions so that you can share it with someone, if you like. As part of the menu we have chosen premium ingredients as we don’t see ourselves as a fast food chain. We use wagyu beef and fresh chicken, and all food items are made fresh on a daily basis and nothing is kept overnight. We try and keep it simple and very minimal. How many destinations have you created? We have three at the moment. Kite Beach, Dubai, was the first destination with the focus being on the beach lifestyle. Soon after that, we found the perfect park destination in Abu Dhabi’s Mushrif Central Park, and we later also opened on the Marina Promenade in Ajman to reach our Salters from the Northern Emirates. Every destination targets a lifestyle and every destination has a slightly different feel to it. We are planning to expand but we think it is important that this happens organically and not too fast. What are the benefits of creating independent concepts versus franchising? We think that freedom of creativity is so important and when you choose to create your own independent concept, you are free to build the brand from A to Z. Yes, it is hard work, and yes, you will make mistakes, but you will learn a lot and are forced to learn from it quickly and take actions when needed. Independent concept is what makes the food culture of a country exciting and with that you can even push for a change in the food culture and this is what we aim for with our brand. We are very hands-on with creating change; if we realise that something doesn’t work for us, we are able to change it immediately the next day.

How is it working together? How do you resolve issues? It’s fun and challenging! We both handle different aspects of the business, so we complement each other very well. At the end of the day we have the same targets and we work towards them, but what we add to the table is different. We sit and work at the same table but one of us is working from a business perspective and one of us from a creative perspective. Deem and I are a great match when it comes to the creative food industry and I don’t think we really have conflicts—whenever we believe in a new idea, we try and prove it to each other. We also have a large table where we all sit together with our managers and learn their point of view as well, as they have realtime experience with our guests and staff. Tell us about your new food concept called Parker's. This is another experience-based restaurant that focuses on the park elements which will be launching soon. It revolves around Mr Parker, who is the keeper of the park, and we created a story with a bit of mystery surrounding it. The idea of it is that we as kids were always in the parks and we don’t see this happening anymore so we wanted to bring that back. Prior to the opening of our permanent location, we actually had a pop-up campaign running which involved a key hunt. We hid keys all across the UAE and even in Kuwait, and asked people to find them in order to get access to Parker’s. When people found a key they would share it with people they love and on social

media. We have always tried to push the boundaries, while keeping up the quality of the food and adding twists to the experience. The restaurant adds a twist to street food from all around the world, offering the most flavourful food in a sociable setting. Do you have any advice for the youth that would like to start their own business? Yes, we do! We believe in being naïve, as we don’t think people should know everything to be in a business. By knowing everything you are more prone to being scared and paranoid. So stay naïve, stay foolish and never let anyone tell you how to do things. Sometimes you just have to learn by yourself. I’m not saying you should never take people’s advice, just don’t take every piece of advice and make sure you experiment. by BHARGAVI NAGRECHA

Musician

"I always improvise when I am playing, even when playing memorised and prepared pieces."

not clear about steps to take next. I had to take a step back and think about how to plan for the future. The steps I took so far were gladly the right ones that got me a little closer to my dream of having a great band, with multiple musical albums, and several tours around the world, spreading happiness and music. How do you come up with different ideas of covers? Are they usually inspired by a certain genre of music? I do not stick to a specific genre. Throughout the years, I have listened to many music styles and experienced various cultures. This helped me store a repository of musical ideas with different genres or "tastes" and then when I am playing, I translate those ideas into one musical piece, mixing actual life sensations, which at the end forms a cover with different tastes. Mostly those musical translations come up on the spot when I first sit in front of a piano. I understand that music is not your full-time job but would you like to have pursued it as a career? I believe what happened in Prague was more than a sign for me to seriously think about pursuing a music career. I have taken the first few steps towards this dream through developing my social media platforms and staying in contact with my amazing followers through weekly Friday videos. I have also released an album called Inception that can be found on most of the online music stores across the world. I have participated in many public and private musical events in Europe and within the region. And from Dubai I am also building the grounds and opening myself to connect with the right sponsors and producers to do more musical collaborations. So stay tuned to my website and social media accounts for updates. What or who are your musical inspirations? Everything that has a rhythm—well-known classical pieces, Wadee Al Safi, Fairuz, Yanni, Turkish music, general fusions and orientals are my musical inspirations. How do you handle mistakes during performances? Passion guides me through my performances, feelings combine with musical ideas which I leave open to interpretation while I play. The type of music I play is subject to minor errors during live performances as it gets so intense. However this rarely happens and if it does it will be so minor and very easily handled.

Maan Hamadeh

by Ayesha Ghaffari

Hailing from a small town in Lebanon, Maan Hamadeh rose to fame when he stunned the world with his dazzling performance of his take on Für Elise at Prague’s Vaclav Havel Airport, which became a viral video on YouTube getting over 17 million views in two months. Apart from his viral video, Maan has a Facebook page, YouTube channel and SoundCloud profile with tons of covers of his latest hits that will no doubt blow your ears away. So, for all you music junkies out there, this little interview is for you.

What inspired you to start playing the keyboard at such a young age? My siblings used to take private music lessons at home, and I remember watching them learn. After their tutorials, I would sneak in and try to play on the keyboard. This kept happening until I was four years old, after which I asked for my own keyboard and that’s when it all started for me. It is something that would have never continued without the amazing support of my parents, who actually taught me how to balance my educational and professional life with a music career. What was your reaction when the video of your performance in Prague went viral? What is better than sharing your passion with the world? It is a mess of happy moments... and thinking, "What shall I do next?" It is that part when you are so happy that your mind is

Restaurant Review

C R E AT I V E F E S T I VA L

D U BA I /APR I L 2016

Moylo's After following Moylo’s for months on Instagram and driving past the restaurant more times than we can even remember, we finally decided to give Moylo’s a go. Upon walking in, we were immediately impressed by the décor of the restaurant. Moylo’s easily has the best interior of any restaurant that we have been to. There are quirky signs on the wall, including, “We don’t have Wi-Fi, talk to each other.” On the ceiling are assortments of coloured crates where the lights for the restaurant are suspended. There are little trinkets scattered around the place that truly add character to this homely little burger shack. Since there were three of us, we ordered a portion of onion rings, parmesan truffle fries, the 'hot chick', and the Moylo’s burger. For drinks, we went for the salted caramel milkshake along with their signature cinnaberry iced tea. Out of all the items, the only one that we were disappointed with was the onion rings. The ring batter didn’t hit home for us. Apart from that, Moylo’s is a tremendous success. In comparison to the competition, Moylo’s is clearly the market leader in all things burger. The dipping sauces, especially the truffle mayo, were some of the best we have ever had and we were provided with a surprisingly generous portion for a side of fries. The parmesan truffle fries were about as good as fries can get as they were thinner and more finely cut. The Parmesan on top did the trick for us, and the addition of truffle easily sealed the deal. The salted caramel milkshake was what you would expect: sweet and thick.

The iced tea was a clear winner out of the drinks for us; the unique 'cinnaberry' flavour was unlike anything we had tried before and was a pleasant change from the regular iced tea flavours you would normally find. The Moylo’s burger was as juicy as it can get. The addition of an onion ring completes the burger and the secret sauce was the cherry on top. In addition to the burger, the dish included a small side of coleslaw that was perfect. It had just the right balance of mayonnaise and cabbage and could even be put on top of the patty upon request. The hot chick, however, was the better burger out of the two. True to its name, it truly does have a spicy kick that might be intolerable for some. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the sauce used in the burger was very similar to something you would find in a juicy set of chicken wings. The service was prompt and the servers were all-smiles, even offering advice on what to try at the restaurant. All in all, a meal for one comprised of a burger, a side and a drink could be between AED 70 and AED 85, but is worth every last dirham. With almost unnoticeable flaws albeit the onion ring batter, this place was a true gem, and we can see ourselves going back very soon.

New Girl In Town

OPENING YOURSELF UP TO DIVERSITY

In this cluster of a globally mobile workforce, it seems as if each one has once found a place to nest in the sparkling concrete of Dubai. I for one, a girl who has been accustomed to a culture change depending on the development of Islamic banking, have never seen so many expats and mixes of culture in one place before. The UAE has a population of about 9.3 million, and expatriates account for over 88% of the population. Here, we have over 200 different nationalities.

I have explored the Arabian culture in a variety of countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, mingling with both locals and foreigners coming to rest. However, there are things so singular to Dubai that it has become a demand characteristic in some to be involved in them. Everything is literal. From Media City only having media companies, Knowledge Village having only universities and Falcon City being shaped like a falcon, you cannot go wrong in your sense of direction here. They took it two steps ahead when Torch City caught fire last year. Your class picture, any party that you go to or even going to the mall with your friends, seems like you are representing a United Nations parliament session There are things we do not talk about. Otherwise, "Visa cancel." It seems like the newspapers are either leading you to believe in a politically and ethically correct Dubai or that they are *the rest of this sentence has been deleted due to inappropriate comments by law of the media censor board* People get strangely angry when it gets cold, like the weather has betrayed them by forcing them to wear a sweater since they are unable to now balance the AC temperatures and outside temperature.

Air conditioners are relied on more than food and water. You are never overdressed here. Showing up to a mall in a black Armani dress is just going to raise the standards of how others dress. Unless it's gold-plated, habibti, it isn’t hot enough. Segways are definitely a legitimate form of transport here, and may just be a national issue soon. The response to rain is the same as how most countries respond to hurricanes. There is nothing more important than either enjoying or fleeing from the spit-like droplets hitting your skin. by INSEYA ALI

Now that is 200 more cultures and traditions to educate yourself on. Sadly, many people choose not to socialise with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds due to possible fallacies about their society and lifestyle. However, close-mindedness and intolerance are not the way to go, especially when there is so much we can learn from people and new cultures. Learning to accept and respect other cultures is an important step that opens your mind to the world around you. So, instead of focusing on people’s differences, try getting to know what all you have in common. Finding common ground is practice for facilitating interpersonal relationships. It forms the basis of a new friendship.

Much of the differences in culture have to do with food preparation, music and what each culture considers courtesy. Now wouldn’t it be fun to try out different cuisines? The world has so much food to offer, why stick to one or two cuisines out of a thousand? Also, try listening to different countries' music. You will be flabbergasted at how much you’re missing out on. Furthermore, researching on different cultures will do you no harm as it would actually make socialising with people from different cultures and countries more enjoyable and less awkward. Next time you see someone from a different country, walk up to them and strike up a conversation. You may learn something new that is actually pretty cool and fun. You may also build friendships that can possibly last forever, who knows? by Ayesha Maqsood

Great fit has always been the key to impeccable style. Slim and tailored has become the default fit adopted by the menswear industry in recent years. However there is always an option to break the rules and step away from fitted silhouette. The casual basics get bigger and we welcome extra long T-shirts, sweatshirts, shirts and jumpers. A longline tee is the perfect way to introduce a fashionforward twist to your streetwear looks, and is easier to style than you might think. For the best effect, team with slim or skinny-fit trousers and jeans, which will provide a nice contrast with your oversized top. Finish with a pair of minimal monochrome trainers for an everyday ensemble that takes its cues from contemporary streetwear. by OLGA LOBANOVA

Book Review

Girls of Riyadh Rajaa Al Sanea Girls of Riyadh is a novel written by Rajaa Al Sanea and is primarily directed towards teenage girls. It is written in the form of emails that contain stories of the personal struggles of four young upper-class women and offers westerners an unprecedented glimpse into a society often veiled from view. The country of Saudi Arabia prohibits any form of physical interaction between men and women and that results in an increased usage of social media, which is how the girls converse with the opposite gender. In addition, Girls of Riyadh addresses the sexism faced by Muslim girls and how restricted their freedom is and teaches its audience about the diverse culture and lifestyle of Saudis from different cities and tribes. In our opinion, this book should be read by every single adolescent out there as it teaches the youth on how these beloved characters overcame adversities. The hardships faced by the characters can be applied to our daily lives as they go through a range of relatable emotions like feeling left out in their social circle, or facing a dilemma and being unaware of how to tell their parents, etc. Also, it should be read by people who are keen to learn about different lifestyles and traditions. While reading the book we were completely and utterly oblivious to our surroundings because we were cherishing each and every word and sentence. by AYESHA MAQSOOD

Inferno Dan Brown Dan Brown’s latest book, Inferno, is a kaleidoscope of art, ancient buildings and classical Italian literature. The novel starts with Robert Langdon waking up in a hospital in Florence, Italy. The world is nearing apocalypse and Langdon—along with his companion, Sienna Brooks—must now save it by decrypting symbols and encrypted messages. Brown captures the issue of overpopulation in his latest novel and hypes it to an even larger extent, which leaves the readers feeling a little queasy with the issue and the way it’s dealt with. The book has a lot of low points. Brooks, the beautiful and exceptionally intelligent female sidekick of Langdon, fails to understand meanings and clues and also at times doesn't know much about the topic being discussed. Brown manages to bring out the wonders of Florence, Italy but fails to successfully analyse the work of Dante for hidden meanings and conspiracies that are expected of him. The beginning of the book is exciting and mysterious, but as the story progresses it gets boring and predictable. The climax is predictable and the end leaves the readers with questions and feels incomplete. Overall the book is not as good as Brown’s earlier works but it is definitely a read for art and history enthusiasts. by Suha Sabith
