BHARGAVI NAGRECHA Acting Editor (editor@one8one.net) Do you ever feel like, every time the year ends, everyone is constantly talking about their past goals, ambitions, and resolutions that they completely forgot about? I, for one, am that person, every new year I wake up with renewed determination, motivation and excitement for all the things I want to accomplish, all the places I want to visit and new habits that I would like to inculcate into my daily routine. I am definitely a person who is all about self development. Hence I always make it a point to take a step back, and ask myself some really tough questions. What do I really want, and how might I be stopping myself from getting that? Or what, according to me, would be important in ten years' time? These are some hard questions and, ultimately, what I want is to try and become that future version of what I see myself doing and being. Hence it is important to take positive actions that would be beneficial to me in the present and future. Here are just a couple of things that I would like to focus on, and by announcing it here, I will make myself accountable and hopefully a whole lot more motivated: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Volunteer and give back to the community by helping out at K9 Friends, Feline Friends, and Al Noor. Learn how to sew and actually make an article of clothing or an accessory for myself. Practice Yoga at least four to five times a week. Perfect the art of making a truly yummy batch of chocolate chip cookies from scratch. Make time for my family and friends by actually being a part of their life and making them feel loved by doing something special for them at random times throughout the year.
Now, it would not be me if I didn't include at least one inspirational quote, so I have chosen this one from Marilyn Grey: “Life is not a dress rehearsal. Stop practicing what you’re going to do and just go do it. In one bold stroke you can transform today.” Happy New Year! #beloud

This app is brilliant if you’re travelling to a new place on public transport. It uses your GPS location to work out where you are, and then gives you all the information you need by filling you in on the nearest bus stops, Metro stations or tram stations, as well as providing timetables. It works in real time as well, so if your bus is running late, you’ll know about it ahead of time.

This Halloween, NeoRun, the ‘Scariest Place to Glo’ was held in Abu Dhabi, at the Zayed Sports Stadium. Following the event’s initial success in June when it was held in Dubai, organisers decided to take the glowin-the-dark fun to Abu Dhabi. “With the latest edition to NeoRun, our goal is to bring much more fun than the traditional 5K run,” said Pach Ang, founder and creator of NeoRun. “We are adding the creeps of Halloween into a neotastic glowing night run, for the healthiest way of having fun this Halloween. The run will become entertainment in itself.” Upon entering the 5 km track, runners were given a T-shirt, a bib with a number and other glow-inthe-dark goodies, like goggles and a light saber. Runners showed up in costumes that ranged from daunting zombies to vampires and witches, gaving participants all the more to run from. The main arena was covered in fun-filled quick-stops—some were selling costumes, masks and paint for those who came under-prepared for the fright night. There was also a glow-in-the-dark dance room, a VIP lounge, and plenty of food and snack stands.
NEORUN: The Scariest Place to Glo
The dark event was littered with all things glowing. LED lights were used to form garlands of lights, laser pathways and a rainbow tunnel. All of this added to the thrill of running past the haunted house, and the ‘underworld’ created on the track. More than 5,000 participants went through the path, littered with 'neowarriors', all ready to spray runners with gallons of neon paint. By the time participants came through the end of the run and all four giant paint cannons had been fired, not a soul was spared from being covered with colourful neon paint. The glow-in-the-dark runners were then ready to greet the eight local and international DJs who had come to help get the after-party going. In a concert-like setting, runners gathered in front of a sinister-looking stage, which was still spewing paint into the crowd, and danced to the great tracks that were spinning. Sam Moult Sam Moult is a born performer. He presents shows, does stand-up comedy, hosts corporate dinners and everything in between as well. His zest and enthusiasm is consistent and present in all that he does. We got a chance to ask the energetic and quick-witted Moult a few questions about himself. Where do you perform, and what is the main appeal for you doing grassroots stand-up comedy in Dubai? Since my first gig in 2011, I have performed at almost every regular comedy night in the UAE—at bars, shisha cafes and even at malls. A lot of people compliment me on my ability to do accents. I have been told that my Keralite Indian accent is perfect. I feel that the way that I can talk to the crowd and improvise on the spot is what really sets me apart. You do a lot of hosting, presenting, interviewing and even stand-up. Do you enjoy anything more over the other, and if so, why? Comedy is always the most fun. I love to make people laugh. I’ve been doing it with my family and friends ever since I was a child. That being said, I have really enjoyed interviewing the likes of Kasabian, Paul van Dyk and Example as well as having been lucky enough to present the brand new Toyota Yaris last year.
How long have you been doing this for and what is your style of reaching out to a crowd? I had my first performance at DUCTAC in Mall of Emirates in 2011 with Dubomedy, but I have been performing since I was seven years old, when I danced to Singing in the Rain in my school’s theatre production. When it comes to reaching out to crowds, I like to talk to people about what they do. People love to talk about themselves and be the centre of attention. By asking them questions about their lives, I can find something I can joke about with them. Do you think your style of hosting, with light comedy, makes you more approachable and thus the product or the event more welcoming? The best thing about comedy is that laughter is contagious. Everyone enjoys a good laugh and it’s always even more fun if it is shared with others. Laughter has also been proven to help sell a product or create a more memorable experience, so what better way to host, and make sure that people enjoy their time, than by making them laugh?

The audience and people you’ve worked with have been extremely diverse—including times when you’ve had a large Filipina women majority. You’ve performed at Comic Con, with a relatively younger crowd gathering there and even have had to cater to families, like at the Fun Fair at Fairmont a few years ago. What has been the best crowd to perform for? Do you have any interesting stories from your days of hosting? The beauty of being in a place like the UAE is that you really have to work to produce jokes that can cater to different audiences. Big crowds, small crowds, Indian, Arab, Filipino— every gig is its own experience and I’m very lucky to have been exposed to all different types. I must admit, though, that sometimes the dark, small, smoky venues can end up being the best because they’re just packed full of energy. A moment that really stood out for me was during the last Middle East Film and Comic-Con when I was helping IGN present a section where guests were invited to take part in a game of Dance Central on Xbox. Four costumed characters were selected and danced to Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance. The thing that was funniest was that they were dressed as a dog, monkey, giraffe and an orangutan. You know the joke where someone walks into a bar? Yeah, these four made that joke. I was laughing so hard I almost couldn’t host properly! by Sumaya Nayr

Sweetest
Girls in Town
Ravisha and Sneha Bhatia are the proud owners of Sugaholic Bakeshop. The sisters are originally from India and their shop came into the spotlight after a bake-sale they launched in 2010 to help raise education funds for a young girl in India. Fast forward a few years the two successful sisters took the baking world by a storm when they opened their bakery, Sugaholic Bakeshop, in Karama, where they offer delectable, mouthwatering treats to all. Our team had the opportunity to sit with the sisters and learn more about them and their sweet sweet shop.
What is it like working together as sisters and entrepreneurs? It's fun but challenging! Siblings tend to take each other for granted and behave less professionally with each other than they would if it was a partner from outside. Having said that, we really had to learn to keep it together when we started off and faced a difference of opinion every day. It took a while but now we are on the same wavelength most of the time. All situations teach you something and this one taught us to not take each other for granted. On the other hand, we have never been closer. It's extremely fun working with your sister because we complement each other's strengths. There are things she is good at and there are things I am good at, so we stick to our jobs and don't interfere with each other's work. But because we are sisters, we value the other's opinion a lot and don't tend to go ahead making big decisions without getting a go-ahead from the other. No matter what, the level of respect is always maintained. Where there any sacrifices you had to make in order to establish Sugaholic? For sure! The entire family pooled in all their savings to start this. There have been sleepless nights, and eggs coming into a strict vegetarian house. In an effort to help us, our mother started touching eggs to help us with the baking even though she had never even been close to one before—due to religious reasons. That was a big sacrifice on her part and our father helped us on the financial front. Ravisha and I invested all our savings initially as well to start Sugaholic. What are your personal favourite desserts? Sneha: Mine is the new Rose and Pistachio Cake and our classic Belgian Chocolate Ganache. Whereas Ravisha loves fondant cakes and can even eat raw fondant. She also loves the gooey Nutella Cake and our Ferrero Rocher cupcakes.
What are your three tips for pastry success? Cling-wrap baked cakes if they're not used immediately to maintain moisture. Sift all dry ingredients at least three times for a more fluffy texture. While tempering chocolate, keep stirring so it doesn't burn. What advice would you like to give future entrepreneurs and pastry chefs? We are more artists than pastry chefs, to be honest. And the reason we started Sugaholic actually was only for a bake sale to raise funds for the education of a young girl back in India. It picked up from then onwards and there was no looking back. So no matter who you are, make sure you are giving back to the community. It doesn’t matter if you earn only AED 100. Give 10% of that to someone in need. Where a good deed is involved, you will always go places. And while you are establishing yourself, if you have financial backup then go all-in. If you can't afford to put your life's savings into it and need to save up, keep a job and work on your passion on the side until you build it up. Season-Ending Recap
Fumes, fuel and madness are only a few words to describe the buzz that circulates everyone from the racers to the spectators. A capacity, sellout crowd of 60,000 fans watched Nico Rosberg hold off current World Champion Lewis Hamilton, as he took advantage of his sixth straight pole to snatch victory from his Mercedes teammate at a thrilling close to the 2015 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This season of Formula 1 had us at the edge of our seats. Following a series of press conferences where thoughts were expressed pre- and post-qualifying, the drivers were set to compete on a cloudy Sunday in Abu Dhabi. The sound of revving engines bounced off the walls at the grandstands surrounding the Yas Marina Circuit in the lead-up to the final race of the season. With Rosberg on pole, Hamilton in second place and Kimi Raikkonen starting from third, the drivers were ready and the lights were out.
Strategy did not seem to play well in the hands of Hamilton as his switch to the soft-compound Pirelli tyre was an attempt to close the gap on Rosberg. He later explained in the press conference that he had been experimenting with the car, altering the suspension prior to qualifying, which led to uncertainty in the drive performance. Rosberg took the win, while fireworks and the crowd cheered and congratulated him in the background. When asked how he felt about being second, Hamilton responded: “I think being World Champion sounds a lot better than winning the race, so that’s good.” But what happened with the chaotic first place run? Raikkonen, in third, said: “It doesn’t make an awful lot of difference if you’re second, wherever you finish.” Sebastian Vettel, in fourth, started from 15th on the grid, with his Ferrari almost gaining on the top three. Fernando Alonso finished 17th following an encounter with Pastor Maldonado, which forced the Lotus to retire. Top Ten Season's Standing:

How do you feel about singing at Yasalam Beats on the Beach? I’m very excited. It was so cool today when we sound checked because you could see the beautiful turquoise water and it was a really amazing feeling. I’ve never been here before, but I found everything to be so beautiful. What type of personality would you say you have? I would say I’m adventurous. I would probably say that I’m very bad at following rules, so if someone tells me a rule, or especially if I come up with a rule for myself, I will most probably break it. Like, if I tell myself to not do something for two weeks that will be all that I’m doing. So I’m kind of bad that way. But I’m curious about life and I love the touring life, because I get to see so many new places, people and cultures all the time. So I guess it suits me really well to be an artist and a curious person that way.

What’s the craziest or most exciting thing you have ever done? Of all the things, if we're talking about a music related thing, I would say performing with Taylor Swift at her show in a stadium with 56,000 people. I was so insanely scared and so excited at the same time and at one point I was just like, "Oh my God! My nerves are going to kill me!” And I had to come up out of the floor and she was singing the song with me and I guess that was one of the coolest and most exciting things I’ve done, musicwise. The craziest thing I’ve done would probably be the time I went to an abandoned train station rave in Rio, Brazil. That was especially crazy and although I did have a bodyguard with me sent by the label he was very unhappy about being there. But hey, it was a lot of fun!
Kicking off the festivities at Yasalam Beats on the Beach was Scandinavian singer and songwriter Tove Lo, who burst onto the international scene with her debut album, Queen of the Clouds. Boasting chart hits with songs like Stay High (Habits) and Talking Body, the singer’s UAE debut sure got the crowd’s adrenaline pumping. Our team had the opportunity to meet with Lo and hear what she had to say about her music and the UAE. Tell us about yourself. Well, my name is Tove Lo. I am from Sweden. I am a singer and a songwriter. I started as a songwriter, and about two years ago I decided to release some stuff on my own. I thought it’ll be something at an indie level, but then my song, Habits, took off and changed my life.
How do you deal with your nerves and jitters? I don’t really get nervous in a bad way; it’s more just adrenaline and excitement. But usually, when it’s a new crowd you just have to go out there and do your thing, and kind of have to feel where they are. Over here, I feel like some people might not even know who I am, some might know one song, or some of these people might know each and every song of mine. So I guess I’m just going to do my thing and deliver the songs in the ways that I always do and sing my heart out and hopefully people will feel it the way I do.
How are you feeling right now? It’s my first time here in the UAE so it is a new audience and you never know what to expect. But I’m very excited and a little bit nervous, too. But I know it’s going to be fun! When you decided to expand your music and try out new things, what did you think it would lead to? The reason I started to expand my music initially was because I had all these songs that were so personal that I didn't just want to give them away. And I wanted to have something out there that’s exactly the way I want it, because sometimes when you’re a writer you have to compromise on what the artist wants, which, you know, makes sense for them. And that is why I decided to start my own indie project on the side but then it completely took over, so now I have no time to do any songwriting for others. But that’s okay because I enjoy doing this for the moment.
What’s the inspiration behind your songs? The inspiration behind my songs is my life really. The past album was basically about my past failed relationships! It’s just the good and bad parts of love, I think. It dictates that very open-heartedly, I think. And it’s also me admitting to my flaws and mistakes, in the music. Do you think that makes your music more relatable? Yeah, I guess it does, because sometimes people don’t want to admit certain things about themselves, when asked directly. But in my music I can actually admit to those things when in reality I wouldn't in person. It’s weird, I know!

What’s your favourite song from the album? It varies day to day, but right now it’s Moments because I loved making that video and it’s pretty crazy and dark, and I loved how it turned out. Making the video for the song was two of the most intense days I’ve had in my life so I’m really happy about how it all turned out.

Multi-award winners Florence + The Machine spread joy throughout the du Arena with an extraordinary performance for the third night of the Yasalam AfterRace Concerts. True to frontwoman's ethos, Florence brought the energy from the race tracks to the du Arena crowd, as cheering fans stayed on their feet for adrenaline-filled renditions of Dog Days are Over, Ship to Wreck, and Cosmic Love. Harp, organ, horns, guitar and booming drums were sent into action as Florence whipped up the crowd into a state of euphoria with her trademarked bare-foot performance.
Enrique True to his euphoric name, Enrique Iglesias pulled out the performance of a lifetime at the du Arena on the second night of the After-Race Concerts. Imagine 30,000 fans cheering the Spanish superstar while he sung all of his beloved hits such as Escape, I’m Loving You and Bailando, which sent the crowd into a frenzy. With his eclectic guitar sound, the Spanish sensation brought a touch of glamour to his performance with dance numbers that got the ground packed with thousands of fans swaying to the music. Throughout the scintillating 90 minute show, Iglesias’s relentless energy and showmanship kept fans on their feet to a catalogue of hits that have conquered the world since he was catapulted into stardom in 1995 with the release of his first album. With the incredible atmosphere reaching boiling point in Abu Dhabi, the 39-year-old once again proved his credentials as the undisputed King of Latin pop, which left an indelible mark on his fans. The night was made even more special by the singer’s interaction with the crowd, including one lucky fan who was brought onstage to sing with the Latin sensation. Expo 2020 welcomed some of our nation’s brightest young minds at the inaugural YouthConnect on Saturday, November 14, at the Sky Bubble, Meydan Dubai. The event is the first in a long-standing and wide-ranging series of interactive forums, designed by youth for youth.
Event
YouthConnect gathered UAE residents between the ages of 16 to 25 for an immersive experience, engaging them through inspirational speeches, hands-on workshops and engaging discussions led by some of the world’s most successful individuals from a variety of industries and disciplines. Participants were encouraged to tailor their individual journeys for the event, creating both an educational and entertaining day that catered to their interests. The event’s proceedings were kicked off by local comedian Ali Al-Saeed, who discussed the importance of empowering youth, and of enjoying the craft we choose. Her Excellency Reem Al-Hashimy, UAE Minister of State and Director General of the Bureau Dubai Expo 2020 continued with an earnest speech about the youth’s responsibility on this planet.
“We are designing Expo 2020 Dubai and its proclaimed theme: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future with this next generation of leaders and innovators in mind," Her Excellency said. “The fact that you have made the choice to be in this room means that you are already watching out and planning for that future. Ready to grasp the right opportunities and make those vital connections…For us that is a sign of your strength and potential. For you it is another step in the road to success.” After concluding, the hundreds of young people in attendance found their way to the workshops and discussions around design, art, engineering, and technology.

YouthConnect tought visits that there is more than one way to make it in life. Adeed Al-Baslooshi, an 11-year-old inventor, found his calling in finding problems and looking for a handy solution. Mohammed Saeed Harib, founder of the animated show Freej, found his calling in turning his creativity into live characters. Amal Al-Mari and Deem Albassam found their calling in delivering fresh and tasty food to the masses, through the cult favourite SALT truck. We learnt that our goals and passion can come to us in many different ways, all we need to do is just learn to open our eyes to the opportunity when it is presented to us. Rapid Fire Round with Tennis Players
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship is back for its eighth installment, bringing the best display of world class tennis entertainment to the Emirates. Six of the world’s top players will descend on the UAE once again for three days of raw, competitive play as they look to kick-start 2016 at the season-opening tournament—and the winner-take-all prize of $250,000. Set to kick off on December 31 with David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga opening the action, the event will also see Abu Dhabi debutants Kevin Anderson and Milos Raonic go head to head. The championship will continue to run until January 2, 2016. It hurt our hearts to see damage done to a spectacular piece of art but with the level of adrenaline released when we watched the Range Rover Sport SVR conquer the Austrian mountains, we knew it was all worth it. We also felt our hearts melt when we watched the Jaguar C-X75 Prototype rattle the roads of Rome, but nothing compared to Bond riding the Land Rover Defender.

The New, the Old, the Fancy and the Bold We walked through the large doors into what seemed to be a line-up of technology engulfed in art. From Ferraris and Maseratis to Toyotas and Nissans, the Dubai International Motor Show 2015 hosted its thirteenth edition at the Dubai World Trade Centre exhibiting numerous manufacturers and brands with top-of-the-range beauties. We wandered the hallways to spot what we liked and here’s what we found.

Something about this 8.4-litre V10 masterpiece shines so bright among others. Street-legal and faster than most, truly a beauty.
But just around the corner was Ford creating a scene with a Mustang GT350 revving its engine onto the podium, followed by the unveiling of the new Ford GT. A car that so roughly tore the track at Le Mans from 1966 until 1969, the GT exhibited resilience in terms of American automotive engineering. Hiding away is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine producing an estimated 600 horsepower—the same direction all automotive companies are taking with their engine development. All in all, the Motor Show was an eventful four days of motoring madness, exhibiting more than 150 manufacturers all under one roof. Incorporating the latest technology entwined with brilliant design, we are happy to see the tremendous growth in the motoring community of Arabia.

Exploring the Quaint Town of
Mangalore
“We landed on a mountain top!” That was the only thing I could think when the wheels of the plane grazed the surface of Mangalore Airport. The airport is on a hilltop and used to be considered a dangerous landing for planes. Now, with increased security and safety measures, Mangalore Airport has become a unique airport in India. I was part of a team coming from Manipal Dubai to compete at the Manipal India Utsav, a festival of sorts with a lot of competitions. I had heard about the environment of the town named Manipal, but was never able to experience it firsthand. We were told that we would stay there a week before returning to Dubai. The town of Manipal looked pretty much like any other south Indian town from the outside—greenery-carpeted walls with a slight breeze. Summer in Mangalore offers less humidity; one can feel the heat without experiencing profound sweating. The monsoons, however, were a different story—from slight drizzles to heavy rains, the monsoon was a time for fun with friends. With the population of the town comprised of mainly youth, it was not a surprise to feel the air of friendship and pranks. The town had narrow roads connecting each other to various sides of the town. There was a main road that connected Manipal Town to Udupi, another district of Mangalore. Udupi is known for its temples, grand and numerous. The famous one is Sri Krishna Temple, which is situated 10 to 15 km from Manipal. Considered one of the oldest temples, Sri Krishna Temple consists of many idols in gold and intricate designs featuring Lord Krishna as a child and as a grown-up. The temple has a large bath in a traditional style with stairs lining the surround walls. The place is opened only for the ‘pujaris’, or priests of temples for performing rituals. The entrance of the temple is a narrow pathway which contains small, self-owned shops. These shops carry the essence of the local culture by displaying bangles in different colours, self-made wire earrings, and miniature idols.
Manipal Town is situated on a hilltop as well and has picturesque beauty. Travelling to the interiors of the town, we reached the peak and the view of the ground below from the top was breathtaking. There were green-carpeted hills, broken at times by a small river emerging from one of the hills and snaking its way down the hills. A few steps before the peak point was a lush area of green with flowers and swings taken care by the authorities. The taste of the local cuisine is a major excuse to come back to the region. There are a number of international fast food chains there as well but please do not be the type of traveller who sticks to their diet. It might look completely different from what you consider as normal but just give it a try. You will not want anything else. One of the famous restaurants in Manipal Town is Attil, which serves the best butter chicken and chocolate fudge. You will be so taken by the taste that you won't be able to help but ask for more. But be sure to keep an eye out for the bill because this restaurant is a little expensive and unfortunately they don’t take smiles or puppy dog eyes in exchange for their food. The local cuisines such as masala dosa (really thin rice crepes with stuffed potatoes and spice), idli (steamed rice cakes), and sambhar (curry made with boiled lentils and vegetables) from smaller restaurants also tastes amazing. The atmosphere in the town is always friendly and energised, except on the holidays when the students and most of the residents leave the area for the Udupi district. Definitely visit the town, especially if you are a graduate student seeking to re-experience college life, at least for a few days.

Twenty-five-year-old Hussein Bazaza was born in Beirut, Lebanon; having developed an appreciation of all things artistic from an early age, including illustration and photography. Today he is one of the best emerging designers that the Middle East has seen. Bazaza is known for drawing inspirations, where every cut reflects a different story, a personal emotion that creates a one of-a-kind experience, fashion with a soul. In the past Bazaza interned at Maison Rabih Kayrouz in Paris, and later worked for Elie Saab as a junior designer in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2013, Bazaza received the prestigious Elle Style Award for the Best Upcoming Middle East Designer which was unanimously voted by 44 global Elle editors. In October 2014, Bazaza partnered with IWC Schaffhausen to exclusively showcase his Resort '15 collection with Adriana Lima as the guest of honour. In April 2015, Bazaza was named the Best Emerging Designer at The Middle East Fashion Awards 2015. Our team had the opportunity to catch up with the amazingly down-to-earth Bazaza and learn more about him. When and why did you decide to become a fashion designer? I have been sketching since I was 10 years old, it is something that came in a very natural way and led me to my enrollment to Esmod Beirut, where I got my BA in Fashion Design and Pattern Making, learning about fashion and designing. What is your favourite part about being a fashion designer? What do you love about designing? I really enjoy the process of creating the actual piece from the sketch, as that is where the process is complete. I also love being immersed in creative environments, and meeting all sorts of incredible and talented people truly inspires, guides and motivates me. What were your inspirations for the designs you created for Spring/Summer 2016? My main inspiration for the SS’16 collection was inspired by the Persian culture, its intricate architecture and fine arts. The fundamental story behind the collection is about the daughter of a Persian King, Princess Mithra. The King desperately wanted to prove his power and so he created a nuclear bomb, which exploded unexpectedly and killed everyone and everything in the Persian lands. Princess Mithra was the only one to survive after the explosion because she lived in the highest tower in the Persian kingdom.

After the bomb explosion, Princess Mithra was completely left alone and she watched nature come back to life for about 10 years. Everything that was dead and destroyed was slowly coming back to life—flowers were growing in unusual ways, animals were deformed, everything was growing back very unnaturally. In the end, Mithra herself got infected by a virus and had minerals and thorns growing inside her body, which lead to her untimely death. Based on this story I created 40 new pieces of clothing where I used lace, chiffon, embroidery, silk satin and brocade.
"I HAVE BEEN SKETCHING SINCE I WAS 10 YEARS OLD." How do you decide which materials to use and work with? I usually just follow my inspiration and that guides me on choosing the best material for the look that I am trying to create. What are some of the challenges you face as a fashion designer? As with all brands, the greatest challenge will be to stick to a vision of turning my brand into the legacy that I intend for it to become. Hence it's staying ahead of the game and constantly innovating but always staying true to the original brand DNA and vision with no compromises. Who is your all-time favourite fashion designer? I am inspired by Valentino collections for their feminine silhouettes and Givenchy for the details and dark colour pallet. I also love Riccardo Tisci’s use of technique and attention to detail. Does your work reflect your personal fashion style and taste? Not really, it’s actually completely the opposite. What do you wear on a daily basis? I prefer to wear something very basic, simple and comfortable on a day-to-day basis. What is the first piece of clothing you ever created? The very first thing I ever created was a shirt for my mother. What is the most challenging part of your job? For me it is making women that wear my clothes happy, as I want them to feel special and beautiful. Who is your dream client? Hands down, Cate Blanchett. What skills, according to you, are necessary for being a successful fashion designer? I find it imperative for a designer to have the right vision for his designs, brand and the women wearing the clothes. What is your favourite fall trend? I am really loving leather dresses for women this fall. What was the most memorable challenge? My most memorable challenge was the first wedding dress that I ever created for a client. What is your favourite store to shop at? I love to shop at Zara. What are your plans for the future? Currently we are closing orders for SS’16 production, have started working on FW’16 collection and are planning to showcase in Europe next season. How did you come up with the name Point of View? The band came to life in 2005 and the music we were writing was essentially message-driven. Hence the name Point of View. We think that music is a great medium to talk with and connect to people.
Point of View is a five-piece ensemble from Dubai, UAE. The band has been around for more than four years and has played some very credible gigs in the UAE. The band headlined the ESPN X Games and the Abu Dhabi F1, and were one of the shortlisted acts to share the stage with legendary rockers Iron Maiden. The band are also set to perform at this year’s Beats on the Beach. Our team had the opportunity to speak with the thought-provoking band to know more about them and learn their point of view.
How would you describe the feel, music and vibe of the band? Melodious. Mature. Hard. High-energy. Tight. When, what and where did you’ll perform the first time? Our first gig was at American University of Dubai in 2005. It was called The Assembly and was probably the most fun gig we have played till date. Everything was so DIY and underground back then. What can the audience expect during your live performance? Groove, melody and neck-breaking experiences What are your songs about? Songs like Third Eye talk about the working-class individual who don’t want to be a part of the proxy politics played by self-centered politicians. The song Shades Of Love talks about how love does not differentiate between colour. Songs like Revolutionise the Revolutionary hint at adopting the Gandhian way of peace and non-violence and to start a revolution that changes mindsets. And then there are songs like Chainsaw, which talk about enjoying and experiencing the risky side of a mundane life. What are some of the challenges the band faces? Bosses at work who have no interest in music! But on a serious note, the challenge really is maintaining the whole balancing act between our day jobs that control our lives and the desire to break out and go on extended tours to different parts of the world without worrying about our bosses, visas, or jobs. None of us drive Maseratis or Ferraris, hence being in a band sometimes becomes a costly effort. The fact that most of our efforts are self-funded and passion-driven makes it a little bit of a tough walk. But having said that, it’s all worth it, the moment you hit that first power chord at a practice session.

What are is the future for POV? We are working on compiling our second album, organising interesting collaborations with Bumblefoot, Lita Ford, and Art of Anarchy with Scott Weiland. In addition we are also working on setting up several tour dates within the Middle East, India, Nepal and Australia. We also plan on setting up a video release for our original song Third Eye, and are also organising several charitable initiatives with musicians from all over the world.

The Colour Run If you have never done a five-kilometre run, we highly suggest you try the Colour Run, because working out has never been more fun! The Color Run was founded in March 2011 as an event to stimulate healthiness and happiness by bringing the public together to participate in the “happiest 5k on the planet.� Around 12,000 participants were in attendance, with tons of free merchandise being tossed into the crowds. Every few kilometres, volunteers would throw different colours on the runners while blasting the latest hit music at their colour stations. The colours consisted of blue, orange, yellow, pink, green and purple. It was comical watching everyone get splattered with colours, whch created some epic pattern of colours on runners' faces, clothes and hair. The weather was really pleasant with the sun making its appearance and vanishing on and off throughout the event and that put everyone in a really good mood. The organisers were sure to hand out water and iced tea every few metres to all the runners. Let’s not forget the party after completing the five-kilometre race. That was our favourite part of the run. We also enjoyed the guest DJ playing electronic dance music, which made the crowd go absolutely wild. When runners got towards the end of the finish line, they were handed out colour packets, which they could throw in the air near the main stage where music was playing or just on their friends. We are happy to announce that the colours came off quite easily, which was a bonus. Logma: Emirati Food With a Modern Twist We recently visited Logma, located in Box Park, a totally cool area to explore as there are tons of stores that look like colourful container stores. Upon entering, we noticed servers wearing the traditional ghutra, which is the Emirati headwear for men. We found the service to be quite remarkable, with knowledgeable staff and polite servers. At one point, when I dropped a fork by mistake, it was replaced the very same second. I almost thought the server knew I was going drop one! Since we were quite hungry, we decided to start out with drinks, Passion of Arabia, Iced Karak and a Jallab. The Jallab was our favourite drink, whereas the Passion of Arabia comes in second place. For food, we were spoilt for choice with countless options. So after careful consideration we settled for the Logma Fries, Samboosa Cheese, Shrimp Rice, Roast Chicken Sandwich, Halloumi Sandwich, Turkey and an Avocado Chicken Sandwich. The Logma Fries were probably the crispiest fries that we have ever tried. The herbs that were sprinkled on top added a nice touch, and went with the whole Emirati theme. Cheese Samboosas are a regular during Iftars, but
these had extra cheese in them. As long as there is more cheese, who's complaining? The Shrimp Rice reminded us of a yummy home-cooked meal, something that our mother would cook for us, hence we were a little biased and found it to be the star dish of the evening. Coming in a close second was the Halloumi Sandwich, which was made with crisp halloumi slices, tomatoes, roasted peppers and logma sauce. When we were finally done with our mains, we ordered our dessert. The restaurant recommended the famous Chebab Katayef and that is what we ordered. This dish was an absolute favourite on the table. The crispy pancake was filled with mascarpone cheese and a dates mixture, and was topped with a generous amount of saffron and cardamom syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. We also asked for a Logma Tiramisu, which was served in a beautiful glass. It tasted like the classic tiramisu except for the added date mixture, which we loved. The restaurant is wonderfully decorated, with hints that remind us of old Dubai while also keeping it neat and elegant. We would highly recommend the Jallab, Shrimp Rice and Chebab Katayef for anyone trying out Logma.

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Ransom Riggs Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is an interesting, eventful and well-thought-out novel. If you are looking for a young adult, dark fantasy thriller then this is the right book for you. As a thriller enthusiast myself, I very much enjoyed Ransom Riggs' work. Filled with magic and mystery, this book left me immersed in my own curiosity after each chapter. The book is a fantasy novel about a young, 16- year-old boy named Jacob Portman, who receives the shock of his life when he learns about his grandfather's murder, the mystery that revolves around his orphanage and a bloodcurdling make-believe creature. In the hopes of uncovering his grandfather's newly brought up past, Jacob is forcefully taken into another world, one which he never would have deemed possible, and he realises that the childhood stories told by his grandfather might possibly be true. The main aspect we loved about this book is not just the terrifying chills and images it gave us but also the fact that these images have actually been printed out. At the end of most chapters, the author includes a picture of a peculiar person, which adds to the electrifying feel of the whole novel. A definite must-read. by JANINE JOLLY
A Fine Balance Rohinton Mistry “You see, we cannot draw lines and compartments and refuse to budge beyond them. Sometimes you have to use your failures as stepping-stones to success. You have to maintain a fine balance between hope and despair.” The story is based in Bombay, India during political unrest in the mid-1970s. A Fine Balance is about four people—two tailors, a widow, who employs them in her apartment, and a college student rooming with the widow. The book touches on topics such as trust issues, greed, sympathy, prejudice, and yet dependence on one another. We love how mysteriously the story unravels and how the characters come together to battle poverty and oppression. Frankly speaking, the book is very depressing but by the end of the journey you will be left with a bigger perspective on the world and a greater appreciation for your life. The Power of an Image As the adage, “A picture is worth a 1,000 words,” puts it, images convey strong messages and have an immediate visual impact. Put in the right context, pictures can achieve even more; they can showcase a variety of complex ideas, relay emotions, and in essence are a vital element of storytelling. As the world constantly develops, and technologies continue to spike, the means for communicating with surroundings are evolving beyond words. With time, people are more and more relying on imagery to convey their messages, which to some, poses a challenge. How can a photographer convey messages through pictures? We’re all storytellers in our own way, and photography gives us a chance to write our stories in a unique approach, while simultaneously breaking language barriers. Messages that you can’t communicate with words or express vocally can be captured in an image and shared across multiple traditional and social mediums.
Accordingly, there are certain tools that facilitate the creation of an image and draw attention to its respective message. To start off, having a story set in mind allows the photographer to better convey the objective behind the picture—highlighting the subject being photographed, or elements being captured. Slight alterations in the scene can radically impact the messaging. For instance, merely changing the background or even the lighting can have strong effects on the outcome. A blurred background as well as low-key lighting will create a dramatic effect, while a black-and-white image might portray grief, and colours will strengthen the mood of the subject. The effects used can add depth to an image and play a vital role in how it is perceived, which explains why media are relying more on imagery to accentuate their articles, and in turn fly readers to different places. What's going on? Mali Hotel Attack At least 21 people died in November, after 170 people were taken hostage at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Mali in West Africa, according to the Mali Ministry of Interior. Armed men held around 170 guests and staff hostage in the 20 November siege that lasted about nine hours before Malian and international forces stormed the hotel to free the captives.
Hidden Rooms in King Tut's Tomb Egypt said there is a 90 per cent chance that hidden chambers will be found within King Tutankhamun's tomb, based on the preliminary results of a new exploration of the 3,300-year-old mausoleum. Researchers say the discovery of a new chamber could shine new light on one of ancient Egypt's most turbulent times, and one prominent researcher has theorised that the remains of Queen Nefertiti might be inside.
Twin Suicide Blasts Twin suicide bombings just minutes apart shattered a Shiite suburb in southern Beirut on November 12, killing at least 43 people and wounding dozens more in one of the deadliest attacks in years. Islamic State quickly claimed responsibility for the explosions, which hit during rush hour in the commercial and residential area of Burj al-Barajneh, a stronghold of the Shia Hezbollah movement that is fighting in Syria. At least 239 people were wounded in the blast, the Lebanese Health Ministry said.
UAE Celebrates Commemoration Day The UAE observed November 30 as Commemoration Day for the first time last month to salute the martyrdom of Emirati heroes who sacrificed their lives defending the sovereignty of Yemen in civil, military and humanitarian services. The day was decreed by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Hong Kong’s Pink Dolphins a Vanishing Breed As Hong Kong seeks to expand its international airport and with a major new bridge project under way, campaigners warn that the dwindling number of much-loved pink dolphins in surrounding waters may disappear altogether. Conservationists say that they have repeatedly raised their concerns but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears, with what they describe as a “rapid” decline of the mammal in the past few decades.
Africa's Child Brides Expected to Double by 2050 In an alarming new study, UNICEF estimates that the total number of child brides in Africa will rise from 125 million to 310 million by 2050. Slow rates of reduction and ballooning populations are the main cause of the projected increases. Early marriage is most prevalent in a vast belt across Africa stretching from Somalia in the east to Guinea in the west.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, last month launched the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to make the emirate a global centre of green energy and economy.
