BHARGAVI NAGRECHA Acting Editor (editor@one8one.net) Can you believe that we are nearly at the end of 2015! How is that even humanly possible—it seemed like just a few weeks ago we were on summer break. Anyhow, given that we are all busy people with overbooked schedules that make it nearly impossible to spend time with the ones we love and cherish, here is a quote from Oprah Winfrey on giving thanks and starting off the month right: “Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” Here are some things I am thankful for: 1. The support and love of my biological family, one8one family and friends—I know it sounds cliché, but it's true. 2. Pumpkin Spice Latte is a must every fall. 3. My gorgeous Day Designer Yearly Planner, which makes life easy and manageable. 4. Pilot Frixon Pens that erase as well, hence making them invaluable to me. 5. Chocolate-covered raspberries and almond clusters. 6. The cooler weather that the UAE is finally experiencing. What are you thankful for? Happy November! #beloud

Wickr (iOS, Android)

Device6 (iOS, Android)

This is a chat app lets you pretend to be a cool agent. You can send text messages and images that you can mark up in the app, and 30-second audio recordings. The difference in this app is that these messages can be encrypted and made to self destruct from the receiver’s phone within a time period. The encrypted media and messages are sent over a secure system, so don’t worry about the message reaching elsewhere or being hacked. Be the kind of Bond you always wished to be with this cool app.

Device6 is for the detectives out there. If you are looking for a way to be glued to your screen, look no further. This is a text-based game, but can be thought of as more of an enhanced digital novel, which entwines a gripping story with geography and puzzles. In the game, you play the character of Anna, who wakes up in a mysterious castle completely unaware of her surroundings. The story unfolds as Anna is made to look for clues and hints in figuring out the situation.

Twilight (Android)

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock (iOS, Android)

This app is for the night owls among us, who use their phones way past midnight. Staring at a bright screen well into the night will make you feel drowsy but will not let you sleep. This is because the blue light emitted by your device can keep you awake. Twilight changes the colours displayed on the screen according to the time of the day, filtering the blue light after sunset and in turn helping you get to sleep. This app is free and is available only in Android phone. iPhone users can rely on Digipill, a similar app available on iOS.

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock monitors your sleeping based on your movements in bed when you’re asleep. The app keeps track of your ‘deep’ sleep and ‘light’ sleep throughout the night. It makes sure to wake you up when you are in a stage of ‘light’ sleeping by letting you fix an alarm time period. For example, you set the alarm between 6:30am and 7:00am, and the app will ring an alarm when you are light sleeping in this period. According to science, waking up during a phase of light sleep helps with your overall wellbeing.

IGN CONVENTION The IGN Convention at Abu Dhabi’s Du Forum took place this October, and like all good things, it was a celebration of video games and pop culture. It united gamers, cosplayers, artists, developers, TV buffs and superheroes alike.

The convention created a lot of hype in the gaming community because of the astounding games that were on display—such as Until Dawn and Just Dance 2016—along with the mindblowing celebrity attendances from Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon, Game of Thrones), Dave Fennoy (Lee Everett, The Walking Dead) and Adam Harrington (Bigby Wolf, Wolf Among Us). The convention deserves praise for putting together such a variety of stalls, gaming competitions and celebrity experiences. We were quite excited by the variety of board and card games that were at the event. We even purchased a card game that was quite innovative and simple. The competitions were quite fun, intense and filled with passionate players. We especially enjoyed the amazing cosplayers, specifically Kirito from SAO. We were also obsessed with the collection of vintage games that were put out. Some of things we noticed about the guests were that they were really only there to collect autographs and take pictures with the celebrities, which was quite sad. Some of the best moments were when games such as Just Dance 2016, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Guitar Hero Live were being showcased at the main stage. IGN made a good effort at the Challenge Chambers, where guests were motivated to challenge themselves for 30-minute intervals. The workshops for screenplays by Image Nation were pretty interesting and noteworthy. Overall it was a good experience. Despite the minor need for improvements, we are sure that the IGN Convention will only get better with time. by anusha goyal

PLACES TO GO WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE MUCH TO SPENd Freshly Ground Sounds Freshly Ground Sounds is a nonprofit, non-commercial community organisation that has come together to form an independent music initiative, providing the UAE with an outlet for musicians and music lovers to gather and share that interest. Having been running for a while now, Freshly is quickly gaining a larger crowd. The last event was closely affiliated with the STEP Conference and gathered close to 500 guests. In addition, the organisers also had a convoy of food trucks selling food, including Rose Leaf Café, which caters for them often. PLACES TO GO WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE MUCH TO Poetry Slam Enjoy watching spoken word poetry, or better, do you write it and are looking for a place to perform? Dubai has two similar communities that gather often for that purpose exactly. PUNCH Poetry and Open Mic Night hosted its second-year anniversary in May this year, and has recently moved its venue location to Fraiche Bistro in JLT. Meanwhile, the Dubai Poetry Slam nights at the Impact Hub is just hosting its fifth event. Both communities have a talented, kind and open group of people and invite everyone to “speak, sing, scream, whisper, even rap your poems, stories, lyrics, and monologues”. They often invite featured, well-renowned performance poets to their special nights as well.

Coffee and Cars Dubai has a growing community that regularly host car events and gatherings, where people come together to either showcase their cars, bikes, or just appreciate the machines that are already there. These meetings are often hosted at Café Rider, Biker’s Café, or sometimes at car garages around Dubai. One main problem is keeping track of who’s hosting where and how not to miss the date. Luckily, Motoring Middle East has a page that keeps track of all the events for you.

Coaching

Ever had trouble getting back on track when things go down? Then we have got you covered with five simple ways to work around your failures and get better results.

Be Proactive, Not Reactive How? By proper planning. Alan Larkin said, “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” We plan ahead of time to ensure we no longer repeat our mistakes but also learn from them, hence enabling us to control our situations and be proactive instead of reactive.

Identify Your Goals “The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score," said Bill Copeland. Goals keep you focused and help you measure your success.

Failure is Your Teacher, Not Your Enemy Above all, just remember that when things go downhill, all it brings is just another opportunity for you to learn. Have courage and move on.

Time + Effort = Results Remember, hard work pays off. It all comes down to how much you want it. Twice the effort results in twice the reward. If you think you are working hard, work harder. It won’t be easy but the result is always satisfying and brings you one step closer to your goal.

Take Charge Stop moping; self-pity won’t take you anywhere. Remember, only you have the ability to change the course of your life. Laugh, smile and leave your worries behind.

Tamer Al Masri

Breaking Barriers: One T-Shirt at a Time In 2007, high school graduate Tamer Al Masri and his friend, Michael Makdah, went down to a Friday market in Souq Jarain, Amman, Jordan. Six quirky designs, and 600 T-shirt sales later, the pair decided to co-found a clothing company called Jobedu. Although having pursued computer science and international studies degrees, the two realigned their fields, and took the leap. They had to learn everything they could about the business, including production, IT, accounting, supply chain management and much more. Learning all aspects of the business has been a very rich experience, and, after seeing the amount of excitement and joy the brand brought to the community, they knew they had to expand. The inspiration that Al Masri and Makdah found was built on a passion for art and marketing. They wanted to fashion a creative Arab brand inspired by their roots, the Bedouins. The company believes that all cultures need to be celebrated and highlighted. One of Jobedu’s core values is to be open and connected to all cultures and traditions, and so the two founders are always trying to reach out to more and more countries.

The quirky designs often contain words in Arabic, and reference pop culture that’s widely recognised in the Arab world. When Jobedu first began, the designers used to sit together, have long brainstorming sessions, come up with concepts and work together on making it happen. Now, the company welcomes design submissions from around the region on its website, in an effort to support talent from Arabic designers and artists from around the GCC. Artists often face difficulties getting ideas across within the region, and Jobedu wants to be the creative platform that makes it easier for them. When prompted as to why they picked T-shirts, Al Masri responds, “Because who doesn’t love a cool T-shirt! Everyone has one and we want Jobedu to be everybody’s favourite.” You can check out Jobedu's cool and unique designs on the company website. Its merchandise is now selling at Virgin Megastores, Hollywood Collections and Collector’s Place at Dubai Mall.

24 Films

TOP FILMS 2000-2014

20 04

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (8.4) The romantic sci-fi drama by Michel Gondry is one to catch, since the characters play their roles in such a convincing manner. The message gets across to you in a simple yet moving manner. The film, with its brilliant plot, moves away from the clichés of every other romantic film, and opens you up to a world of possibilities beyond. It has a refreshing originality in the way that the plot is revealed.

Have you ever wondered what makes a movie great? Is it the way it was directed, edited, the script, or do you think it depends on the cast? We sat down and decided to compile the top movies through the years of 2000 to 2014, based on various qualities that make a movie an absolute success. Here is what we have compiled:

20 00

20 01 20 03

Devils on the Doorstep (8.2) The film by Wen Jiang is a dark mix of comedy, drama and horror, where the protagonist has to deal with a serious issue in a comedic manner while at the same time maintaining the respect and importance of the issue being brought up. The film takes the award for its humour in spite of the tragic situations placed. It was banned in China for its ‘political incorrectness’, however it is still one of the most popular Japanese films.

The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) In the The Fellowship of the Ring, the special effects are remarkable. If you have seen the film already, you will remember a scene where a massive wall of water reforms into the spirits of charging stallions. The Two Towers is even more intense than the first. Some films tend to have a little too much of a certain aspect, say the sound, or the emotion or the action and effects, which tends to overwhelm you. However, in this, everything is balanced to the optimum level, which impressed the audience greatly. The Return of the King was something people expected to be even better than the first two films, and it lived up to that expectation. It, of course, had the superb editing, the action and emotion, and it was realistically fast paced, despite the fact that the ending took so long to flesh out. Overall, this is a must-watch trilogy.

20 05

20 06

20 07

Black (8.3) This Indian film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one that touches you through and through. It instigates thinking, empathising and many other emotions people prefer to keep hidden. The idea behind the plot is one that isn’t a common issue to take up. A blind and deaf girl’s journey in life amongst ‘normal’ people, with acting that is so convincing that it makes you think that it is real. The film teaches you a lesson of patience, of understanding and of failure and success.

The Lives of Others (8.5) A dramatic thriller by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarc that engages you from the word ‘go’. The direction in the film is almost flawless. The almost lifeless look of the past East has been recreated in the film allowing for viewers to be transported back and to experience the surroundings at the time. The story has been crafted well, but the mood is something difficult to create and that is what has come through in the success of the film.

Into the Wild (8.2) Sean Penn brings the rare to life in this adventure film. In this film, we realise the power of writing. Everything created in the film is brought down to a real and human level for the audience to easily relate to. When you see something in the film, you feel like it is possible, or as if you have gone through it. The moral message through the drama comes through very clearly to underline the essence of the film.

20 08

20 09

20 10

20 11

The Dark Knight (9) The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan allowed the actors to express their talent sufficiently in the film. The special effects don’t overpower the acting style in any way. But you can think of the film as separate from its famous actors, and that there is so much more to it. Every shot, angle and size has been taken care of with great detail. A critic once stated that any kind of praise for this film would be an understatement.

3 Idiots (8.5) This dramatic comedy sets home in the heart of every person who watches it. The movie, while dealing with the issue of the education system, sets a comic relief that allows for viewers to understand the message between the words put out to them. The sound in the film has been enhanced to morph with the emotion. The film brings an awesome combination of perfectly matched acting, sound, direction and shots. This takes the award for its overall performance.

Inception (8.8) Christopher Nolan is one of this century's best directors. He is simply a master at leading the audience into a moral, scientific and intellectual world where we as viewers make our own judgement and decisions without being too influenced on the script’s point of view. We see how Nolan creates an edgy yet sophisticated film and has made it possible for us to watch, enjoy and actually experience the excitement, rush and jolts.

The Intouchables (8.6) ) Sensitive issues seem to be the winning streak for this phase of the 2000s. It is easy to make a plot complicated. This is one of those that goes in the opposite direction—the story is surprisingly simple. If the other films mentioned here were films you could relate to, this crosses the benchmark. It is simple enough for you to want to experiment in your everyday life. The writer of the film has crafted the journey of the story very well.

20 12

20 13

20 14

The Dark Knight Rises (8.5) Another Christopher Nolan film. Once again, this brings what we call ‘a true cinematic experience’. It is a long film with not one moment of lagging to it. The film tends to give you a dual feeling. You understand and you don’t understand. You feel and you are not sure whether to feel it or not. The film, like the first in the series, is once again a reminder of the power of phenomenal writing and direction.

The Wolf of Wall Street (8.2) Comedy and crime—a strange combination, yet it works amazingly for Martin Scorsese in this film. Like 3 Idiots, this is another of those all-rounder films. It scores in all senses— direction, acting, shots, and emotion. The sound is lively and builds up the emotion to the right extent. While wrong is happening, you tend to encourage it to move on so that you get to enter deeper in the plot. A captivating film through and through.

Interstellar (8.7) Again from Christopher Nolan, Interstellar is much more than just a sci-fi movie. Image and sound has a huge effect on how we see things and that is what Nolan has worked on with this film. We know that, even if you began to watch the movie with your full concentration you would get lost and forget where you were. Nolan hit luck twice, first when he revolutionised the superhero genre with The Dark Knight and then again when he did the same with Interstellar. These are a few of the most visually appealing films you will find from 2000 to 2014. If you’ve seen them and loved them, you won’t mind watching them again. If you haven’t seen these titles, this is your chance to watch them.

Interview

Salma Mahjabeen

Design Beyond Fashion

Who is your role model in the fashion industry? I have many role models in the industry, I see Stella McCartney as my role model, and also my previous boss, Mr Alloua Gaham, founder and owner of Cute Edition by Edition Limitee. I did my first fashion internship with him and it was the best experience ever—he was more like a mentor than a boss. I still remember the things he taught me and use them in my life. I hope I can help and inspire someone the way he helped me.

Meet Salma Mahjabeen, an assistant designer at a local fashion house, and current winner of ValleyDez with her aptly named collection, Bint Dubai. Her designs impressed the judges and have earned a place in uber-fashionable boutiques.

What words of advice would you give to people who would like to pursue a career in fashion designing? Don’t be afraid to start small; you really have to work extra hard to prove you’ve got what it takes before people start to believe in you. Designers don’t sleep. I am not trying to scare anyone but I think that’s the amount of work you have to do. Anyone who wants to pursue a career in fashion first should prepare themselves mentally so they are not shocked. It is not always glitter and glamour. It is obviously fun and creative but only when you learn to handle the pressure. It took me quite some time to learn to handle it. Work hard and be true to your inner artist and you will do just fine.

What inspired you to start digital illustration? My dad was a software engineer and he always had Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on his computer. When I was in school (third grade), he introduced me to Adobe Illustrator and taught me how I can make easily make a flower by copying an oval shape, rotating it and pasting it several times to draw a daisy. I started to practice, creating daisies to cartoon characters then finally when I discovered my interest for fashion I started to look at becoming a digital fashion illustration artist and became inspired by the French artist Malika Favre; her bold and minimalistic style inspires me. What were the obstacles you faced while trying to pursue a profession in fashion designing? I am a recent graduate from Heriot Watt University. It is not easy to break through in this industry and the fashion industry in Dubai is not as big as it is in Asia or Europe. Employment opportunities are also quite limited for designers and when you are a fresh graduate you are vulnerable. Most companies I encountered asked me to develop a collection free of charge for them as I did not have prior experience. Nobody asks an engineer to build a house or design a house free of charge because he or she is a fresh graduate. Some companies do not see it as intellectual property—they think it’s just 18 outfit sketches but fail to understand the design process and time designers take to come up with the 18 sketches. Artists and designers have bills to pay as well. It took me a good year before I found a decent job.

Where do you see yourself in five years? It is every designer’s dream to have their own label, I am no different; I would like to be the creative director of my own label in five years’ time.

"designing is fun and creative, but only once you learn to handle the pressure."

What makes your designs more unique and different than others? My designs are usually straightforward. I like to design more commercial pieces mostly but I try to add a unique print or illustration to make a statement. I grew up in Dubai and this city has a big influence on my designs, so I try to add a cultural touch in an innovative and modern way because I feel that is a unique part of my design. I can only speak for myself and say how my own designs are unique because I feel every designer’s designs are unique and no two heads are the same. by AYESHA MAQSOOD

Hannibal Buress and Jerrod Carmichael Live in Dubai

ALI SAYED COMEDY SHOW However, Al Sayed’s range was not just limited to Dubai. He brought with him the ability to distinctly vocalise the nuances between accents ranging from Egyptian to Lebanese, and everything inbetween. One thing that set Al Sayed apart from the hosts of comedians performing at DCF was his ability to connect with the audience's reality of living in Dubai. Taking all the chances he could to interact with the joyous crowd, he even managed to take a poke at his own childhood, where he grew up with “just one” Ferrari. An aspect of the show that stood out prominently was the almost-sombre tone Al Sayed took towards the halfway point of the show, where he managed to humorously slip in some references to current affairs he feels strongly about. This fit in well with his ability to educate the audience and make them aware that each culture is unique, before having a go at them. Ali Al Sayed is a true pioneer for the UAE’s comedy scene.

As the Dubai Comedy Festival draws to an end, Emirati comedian Ali Al Sayed took the stage at the Madinat Theatre, Dubai on October 19. Shooting his comedy special, Onestly Sbeaking, for a live audience, the DCF warmed the crowd up with some up-and-coming stand-up comedians, a lot of whom are based in the country. The show hosted several well-known names in the region, including Omar Ismail, and Omar Shams, and even squeezed in comedians as young as 14 years old. The DCF deserves recognition for putting up a show with an all-Arab line up, as it encourages younger aspiring entertainers towards what’s usually considered an unorthodox profession. The show had even drawn together what was mostly an Arab audience, whose support came in the form of an abundance of laughter. The headliner of the show, Ali Al Sayed, took reigns after the opening acts and kept the atmosphere up and alive all through his 100-minute set. A majority of the comedy was circulated around Al Sayed’s impeccable imitations—be it the beyond-accurate Indian accent he picked up when he studied at Our Own High School in Dubai when he was younger, or the melodic greetings of a Filipino service staff.

"ali sayed was one of those rare emirati boys who grew up with 'just one' ferrari." by SUMAYA NAYR

As a part of the first Dubai Comedy Fest, Dubomedy brought both Hannibal Buress and Jerrod Carmichael, who are very popular comedians in the States. The show started off with Emirati comedian Ali Al Sayed, who opened the show with his natural flair for local comedy. Next, Carmichael took up the show, with his lanky frame shouting wit and familiarity. He's an actor you may recognise from Zac Efron’s 2014 movie, Neighbours. Carmichael's on-stage persona matches his role; young, observant and extremely clever. His set consisted of unspoken hints, which were quite fun. He proceeded to do a bit about him being a great boyfriend. That if he ever had the chance, he would text his girlfriend, “I know you had a stressful day at work. But without you the company would fall apart. And frankly so would I.” The crowd responded with awws. His next bit described the nature of his and Beyonce’s wedding, which ended with her eating a fistful of eggs. Burress stood as the headlining act of the evening. Burress has worked as a writer for 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live and been a part of the cult classic The Eric Andre Show. His comedy experience showed in the way he was able to converse back and forth with the audience members. His style bounced between inquisitive to roll-call fast rants about gambling, underwater apartments and terrible sport franchise mascots. He mentioned the NBA franchise, The New Orleans Pelicans, and the little known fact that pelicans are a lot more ferocious than they seem. The best part of Burress’ set was where he interacted with the DJ to play clips of music and comment on them, including a reference to Iggy Azalea's pop-hit Fancy. It was a hilarious night to remember. It was also a super insightful way to see Dubai through the hilarious lens of comedy.

Travel

THE MALDIVES Everyone seems to have an opinion on this fashionable destination, surrounded by romantic stories and gossip, whether they have had a chance to visit or not. After spending a wonderful week exploring some of the islands and indulging in some amazing adventures, I set myself on a mission to debunk some of the popular myths about the Maldives. Hopefully this list will help you to prepare yourself for your own Maldivian adventure.

MYTHS

FACTS

You must break the bank to go there. The Maldives is thought to be a dream of many but a reality of few. The country has made its name with luxury five-star hotels, yet now it has several affordable options as well. Many residential islands have guest houses that offer a comfortable stay for as little as a $100 per day including meals making it a perfect choice for younger visitors. For diving and surfing lovers, liveaboards are a great option as you pay once and then your accommodation, food and activities are sorted. Prices vary depending on the class of the boat and services provided. They do, however, cater to different budgets. The bottom line is just do some research and talk your friends into taking this adventure with you.

Picture-perfect white beaches. Whether you bring your full-frame DSLR camera, use a GoPro or your smartphone, you will take shots that will blow your social media up by creating a beautiful postcard-like image with each and every single shot. Why? Nature was very generous with the country, which is made up of over 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. Wherever you go, you will enjoy getting sunkissed under the generous sun, sand and beaches.

It is boring for singles. This is by far the biggest myth there is about Maldives. Although this destination is frequented by couples, it also has a lot to offer to single visitors, especially those with a penchant for adrenaline and adventure. There is not much to do. Different types of people seek different types of vacations, and while beachgoers are happy to stay by the crystal-clear water on the shiny white sand every single day with short breaks for food and spa, others crave a more active way to spend their time. And again, there is something for everyone. Fancy dancing with the fish six metres below the surface in the first underwater nightclub, Subsix, at Niyama resort? Or maybe take aerial shots from a sea plane? People who don’t swim can enjoy the Whale Submarine to explore the rich marine life on coral reefs without getting themselves wet. Divers can make the most of the underwater beauty of the Indian Ocean. Both beginner and seasoned surfers can polish their skills at the surf spots for all levels.

It is a strict country. Although it is a Muslim countrym you can enjoy both the nightlife and getting your perfect tan on the beach. Most of the five-star hotels are located on their own islands and offer guests complete freedom. Some beaches may not be suitable for tanning in your regular swimwear, however those are quite rare. It is far away. A lot of people do not realise that the UAE and Maldives share the Indian Ocean and it takes just a little over four hours to reach the Maldives from Dubai with flights being available daily. So next time you are thinking Turkey or Thailand for their proximity, think again as the blue heaven is closer to you than you think.

"the islands give endless opportunities for sunrises, sunsets and star trail photography."

It is a treat for photographers. Amateur as well as professional photographers will enjoy exploring the streets of the capital with the many colourful markets and ports. There is a lot to see just by taking a walk around the city and meeting the local people. The Maldivian lifestyle is pretty relaxed and people are very welcoming and in most cases will gladly agree to having their photos taken. The islands give endless opportunities for sunrises, sunsets and star trail photography. Underwater photographers won't be disappointed with the diversity of marine life, ranging from the colourful parrotfish to all kinds of sharks, as well as the iconic Manta Rays. The underwater life is amazing. Home to several ecosystems, including a variety of coral reefs, the Maldives boasts of more than 1,000 species of fish, 21 species of dolphins and whales and nearly 200 species of coral. This means that whether you scuba dive, free dive or even snorkel, there is always a lot to see. Note that, to see the larger marine life, you should head north, also check if the hotel you choose makes dive trips available for all levels.

The Maldives are disappearing. According to the report of the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change, the Maldives is facing a serious threat due to climate change and the rising sea level, which is predicted to increase by 59 cm by 2100, which means that most inhabited islands may become abandoned. The good part is that the government, environmental NGOs and many community groups are running various programs aiming to protect the environment. Here is my list. I hope it helps you to plan your perfect trip and feel free to drop me a line or read my blog www.lust4ocean.com. by SLAVA NOOR

"I was always intrigued by dormant objects, like a stapler or pen, coming to life."

Meet Lina Younes, a stop-motion director and animator, who has worked very hard to introduce Animate Dubai. The first edition of Animate Dubai will take place from 3 to 5 December at Dubai Design District, the city’s novel creative hub. The three-day festival offers a weekend packed with animated films, themed talks, fun activities for all ages, and a chance to meet animation pioneers from all around the world. Arab and international animation professionals, amateurs, and students are invited to submit features, shorts, series, experimental, and commercial work across all genres. Tell us about yourself. I’m Lina and I’m a stop motion animator and film director. I started getting obsessed with creating new worlds and soon enough, I got into creating an animation festival. I connect with all the characters that I create through the life that I lead.

LINA YOUNES bringing objects to life

What courses did you take at university? I took (and I’m still signing up for some) acting for animation, puppetry and marionette. Basically, it teaches you how to create your own puppets. I also took dramatology, which is for theatre and puppets, and I attended some stop-motion workshops where you create a character out of professional tools in order to animate them smoothly on set. And I take make up in order to paint the puppets so that I don’t have to work much with lighting.

What do you hope to change with the introduction of Animate Dubai? I don’t think change is the word that I would use. I would like to introduce people to each other, people who are really good at animation, and bring in well-known animation producers and directors. Since I have lived in Dubai for six years and I have had the opportunity to meet several people who are so talented, it is only natural that I would like to educate people on how animation works because a lot of people don’t know where to start from. Hence we will offer different programs to cater to the beginners' needs, which in turn will expose them to a multitude of films belonging to various categories, which also plays a huge role in getting them interested. What do you do on a daily basis? I wake up early, check my emails and organise my to-do list. Right now I’m working on a stop-motion set for an animal reserve in Sharjah so I’m going to meet with the artist. I’m also working with a glass artist in order to create a set. After that, I have a couple of meetings for Animate Dubai and then I get back to my emails. In the meantime I am also creating a couple of characters and then I’ll probably animate them. I need to create a miniature set so that I can place things inside and see how it works. Basically, I play a lot and do some adult stuff like attend meetings and then go back to playing. What are your words of encouragement to people who would like to pursue a career in the animation industry? Never grow up. Just remember that animation is not just for kids and the journey is worthwhile. What do you do when you’re not working on animation? When I’m not working on animation, I’m watching animation. I also enjoy reading and watching a lot of interviews. I’m also always observing people. I like to see how they would react to a certain situation if they were a miniature puppet while being attached to strings. It’s fun to create your own world.

"I like to see how they would react to a certain situation if they were a miniature puppet while being attached to strings."

What inspired you start Animate Dubai? I took some workshops in 2012 in Prague, Hungary, Argentina and Peru and after six months of attending those workshops, I realised that Dubai doesn’t have workshops and it’s actually really cool that it’s something that I’d like to go to, so I started working on it ever since. Were you always interested in the field of animation? Yes, I was always intrigued by dormant objects, like a stapler or pen, coming to life. I always wondered how people made them move or seem real, how long it took them to animate them and what problems they faced during the production and how they overcame them. You can make a stapler really angry or give it any desired emotion and it feels like they only come to life when I touch them.

What can people expect from the first edition of Animate Dubai? For Animate Dubai, we’re starting big but humble. Big as in the content and who we are bringing over. So, expect a program with Arab and international animation from features, adverts, television and web series. We will also be having panel discussions and talks to cater to the needs of people who seek to gain more information on animation. Like, how does writing for animation differ from writing for a short, live-action film and how to connect different parts of animation together from story work, script, developing the characters and storyline, editing, filming and final. We’re also introducing an animation film market, which is a small market consisting of a more advanced audience. It focuses on universities who provide animation courses, among other things. There’s a university in Tunisia, which is the first animation university in the Arab world, that focuses solely on animation and nothing else. The program also guides its audience on what to do with their films after the production process, like which festival to send it to or how can people or television stations buy it or broadcast it. What is the future of animation as an industry in the next five years? We already started using animation in advertising and I think that people are starting to acknowledge the uniqueness of animation as opposed to live footage. I think there’s progress on that front. Animation will also be used as a method of education because animation is very interactive and would facilitate a better understanding of the topic. I think animation is an ideal way to voice an idea. It’s like a moving painting or moving object. Also, animation is very accessible. by AYESHA MAQSOOD

Restaurant Reviews

Hard Rock Café Hard Rock Café has slowly been gaining a reputation amongst the population of UAE. Upon entering the second floor, the melodious sounds of rock music fill up the atmosphere. Rock music is played at all times and music videos are displayed through several television screens, hence the name Hard Rock Café. The place gives off really hip and cool vibes. The cheery and benevolent staff guided us to our seating arrangements and constantly checked up on us to see whether we were doing okay. After a long browse through the menu, for starters, we ordered the classic nachos, which was a heavenly mixture of layered bean mix, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, garnished with sour cream, the Santa Fe spring rolls, which was deliciously stuffed with spinach, black beans, corn, jalapenos and mixed cheese, and the rockin’ wings, which was definitely everyone’s favourite starter as it was coated with a signature smoked dry rub, slow roasted and served with blue cheese and carrot and celery sticks. The rockin’ wings is definitely a must-have. As for our main course, we ordered the herb-grilled chicken breast, which was my favourite main course and the soft, creamy and golden mashed potatoes that it came along with were definitely one of the most delicious mashed potatoes that I’ve ever tasted. We also had the hickory-smoked barbecue combo, which consisted of ribs and a mouth-watering lamb combo, the hickory-smoked pulled chicken, which will not be going on my recommendations list as it smelled quite overwhelming and tasted the same, and the local legendary burger, which consisted of a beef burger patty topped with date chutney (it tasted surprisingly good), soft kholas dates and creamy cheese and it was all served on top of a toasted bun with iceberg lettuce and tomato. For desserts, even though their servings were massive and we were all extremely full, we ended up ordering the hot fudge nrownie, which was mouth-watering, and the chocolate molten cake, which was a dense, chocolaty cake with a lava-like centre of rich, oozing molten chocolate. It was served warm with London Dairy vanilla ice cream. I had a magnificent experience and will definitely be coming back for more. Fraiche Café & Bistro Attention all food lovers, in case if you have not heard of the Fraiche Cafe and Bistro, you must check out the Montrealinspired cafe now! Imagine a menu that changes in availability to seasonal produce and that is committed to supporting local suppliers and sustainably sourced ingredients—doesn’t that sound lovely? In terms of the restaurant decor, we found it to be quite a spacious and open venue, designed with a touch of vintage and a dash of New York industrial-style detailing. We especially loved the massive elevated table with tons of books. The entire restaurant is lit up by Dubai’s natural sunlight, which gives it a fun, friendly and energetic vibe. The minute we entered the charming little cafe we were greeted by a very friendly waitng staff who brought us to our table and gave us the menu. To start off with, we ordered fresh orange juice and an apple, carrot and spinach smoothie, which was to die for. For the mains, we ordered the banana bread caramel French toast, which was decorated with sliced bananas, chopped walnuts and was drizzled with a sweet and salty caramel sauce. This was seriously one of the best things we have ever eaten, and is something to look forward to this fall as it was packed with all the right spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg.

We also ordered a plate of the veggie burger, which was a patty made of quinoa and veggies, served on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, guacamole and a side salad. This was quite a filling burger, but we found the patty to be really soft and not cooked all the way through. In terms of taste it was good but it won't be named as the best veggie burger in town. Since we went in on a weekend and the restaurant had its unlimited breakfast option, it was a great deal at AED 75 per person. Within the deal, we also had the option to try out all the lovely sweets and cakes, which were pretty good as well. Overall this is a great place to hang out with family and friends in the heart of JLT. Location: Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Swiss Tower, Cluster Y Price: AED 180 for 2 people by bhargavi nagrecha

Musician

“It was really a synergy of my passion for the art, my desire to spread music, and of course my entrepreneurial spirit.” Initially Gandhi’s YouTube Channel started off purely as a creative outlet for him to express his music. So when he uploaded his first video back in 2008 he never expected anyone to even view his work. When he realised the potential and support he received from his music, he decided that it was a beautiful way to enhance his skills, connect with people regardless of geographical boundaries. After Aakash completed his MBA, he was inspired to make a living out of his passion, hence his website, 88 Keys to Euphoria, was born. Through his site people can learn to play popular Bollywood songs on the piano through on-demand video tutorials.

Aakash Gandhi

Keyboardist | Pianist | Composer

Founder of 88 Keys To Euphoria, Aakash Gandhi is a classically trained Indian pianist and composer from the United States. He received his MBA in Finance from the University of Central Florida. Despite a strong academic foundation, Aakash has always maintained a very keen interest in the musical arts. Soon after launching his YouTube channel, 88KeysToEuphoria, in January 2008, he quickly became noticed for his acoustic blend of Western and Bollywood music, which ultimately led to him being YouTube's number-one most-subscribed -to independent Indian musician, with over 132,084 subscribers and 18 million views.

Aakash also mentions that he is working on some original work as well and that this should be out sometime in December. He also plans to launch a platform where individuals can share their amazing musical talents. This would help to showcase their unique and refreshing musical take of music.

STRONG is the new beautiful

We live with a generation that promotes skinny as beautiful and mostly looks down upon fit and strong women. As people of this generation, we need to challenge that idea and encourage other women to work out, be strong and healthy. We need to exemplify that strong is the new beautiful. Meet Luz Ocampo, who is one of the UAE’s youngest Crossfit coaches, and is also the perfect example of how women can be strong, fit and feminine all at the same time.

Tell us about yourself. My name is Luz Ocampo. I am currently a student, studying full time and have a part time job as a Crossfit instructor. Crossfit is basically a mixture of cardio, gymnastics and Olympic weightlifting. It is the type of sport that will challenge you no matter how fit you think you are.

"crossfit is basically a mixture of cardio, gymnastics and oplymic weightlifting." How do you manage to live according to such a tight schedule? It’s hard, but it’s given me many skills. I am more organised and prepared. And now I prefer waking up early even on the weekends, which saves me a lot more time.

As a person who has always lived a fit lifestyle, I thought that Crossfit won’t be that tough. Surprisingly, after my first session, I was drop dead tired. It was a lot tougher than I thought! My first reaction was to quit and never come again. But I knew I had to go back and master the movements and become better at them. So I challenged myself everyday and showed up to the gym regularly. What is your schedule like? How do you manage your time? In my university I get to choose my timings, so I choose them according to my fitness schedule. My daily routine is something like this: I wake up at 6am. I have my first and second clients until 9am. Then I head to university and have classes until 3pm. After which I come directly back to the gym, and have clients and Crossfit group classes until 6:30pm.

People say that girls avoid weight lifting because they are afraid of injuries. Is that true? Absolutely not! Crossfit training increases muscle mass, thus strengthening the bones, ligaments and tendons. So it’s the opposite. One of my own clients got into a car accident recently and would not have been able to walk anymore if not for her muscle mass that protected her bones in the car crash. Additionally, a lot of people say that women shouldn’t be lifting weights because they will gain too much muscle and look manly. How do you deal with such misconceptions? Male or female, growing muscle is not easy and requires a lot of hard work. So unless, you’re training four times a day and your diet is extremely strict regarding what, when and how much you should eat, you are not going to be gaining extreme mass of muscle. When the girls at my gym tell me they want to get toned but not big, I love to use myself as an example. I love to work out, but I am not big. So I ask them, “Well look at me, do I look big to you?” To which they respond, "No! I love your body." From there on, they trust me with my coaching.

Instagram: luz.ocampo

Finally, what advice would you give to people who are just starting the gym life or their fitness regime? It’s going to be hard at the beginning, but don’t quit! Just like I wanted to quit Crossfit but came back and persisted, you should too! by Maria Mohammed

THEIR SOULS Art Makes You Feel Something Taking inspiration from The Great Gatsby, imagine a woman with a few curled locks in her hair, a man dressed in a sleek suit and tie, riding a mauve-colored Porsche in the suburbs. An elegance in itself projected through German mechanics. The start of one of the greatest troublesome technologies, which has certainly proven to be of value. The 356 rear engine was a challenge done right, and a pedigree kept real.

Become One in Mechanical Harmony

356 Porche—1965

A Rattling Engine Should Do the Same The smell of gasoline lingers in the air behind what seems to be a time capsule, one that encompasses a story only to be felt while driving. The essence of a time unknown to you but clearly evident in your vicinity, you can almost hear Johnny Cash strumming his Tennessee tunes in the backseat. Ahead a loopy V8, driving the rear wheels, louder and louder as the pedal is pushed farther. Ford F100—1972

Let the Road Answer Your Questions As a painting is viewed on white walls in museums, vehicles are viewed roaring with anger along sandy backgrounds. As an art enthusiast absorbs the emotional elements on a canvas, a motorist feels the same way when a car roars by. Basic mechanical technology utilises floating suspension at higher speeds that creates a serene experience as silence consumes the mind. Ford Mustang Fastback—1968

The epitome of rattle and class intertwined, a little bit of rugged and a whole lot of wind—the Bronco in its prime resembles liberating values. A car built into the stream of the American Jeep and the English Land Rover making a stance as an outlier in contrast with all Ford vehicles. Wind blowing, tackling obstacles, and a fierce engine under the hood—a spectacular drive. Ford Bronco—1969

Book Review

Great Short Stories Anton Chekhov With no doubt, Chekhov is known as the greatest writer of short stories in history. Most of us live a busy life and lack the time to read long novels, so it would be a good option to read short stories. Hence we would simply recommend short stories written by Anton Chekhov. The stories are light to read yet very profound. The most interesting part about Chekhov’s work is that you will either hate it or love it, nothing in between. The reason being that, on the surface, the stories feel uninteresting and sometime lack a plot twist, but if you find your way and understand the stories through a deeper level, by the end you will be left completely numb with awe. Chekhov was a genius at accumulating the common trivialities in life and channeling it all at you. He just wants you to think, but often with a lot frustration from the reader, he doesn’t tell you what to think. As for the explanation of the story, you will have to find one for yourself. by Maria Mohammad

Cell Robin Cook Cell is a medical thriller novel by Robin Cook. The book covers the story of George Wilson, who is a radiologist. He wakes up one morning to find his fiancée dead in bed after participating in an iDoc trial. iDoc is a new mobile app for people who can't afford extreme medical care. George becomes suspicious of the app after he finds out, that along with his fiancée, several other people, also part of the trial, have also died. He decides to find out the truth behind the devastating effects of the app. When reading the book, you become completely engulfed in the world and terminology of medicine and yet at the same time, it has been made simple enough for non-medical people to understand. The book is fast paced, and at every point, some of the plan of action is taking place. The book, however, doesn’t go exactly the way a reader would hypothetically imagine it to go. Overall, if you are one for mysteries, and medical thrillers at that, Cell is almost a must read. You won’t be able to put it down once you pick it up. by Neelam Sawlani

Art Attack!

Meet Badriya, who is a bi-racial Emirati and Filipino girl who recently graduated from Zayed University College of Art and Design. She majored in interior design and now works full time, however she also has a side business of drawing realistic and surreal images. Ever since Badriya was a little girl, she would easily get lost in her thoughts and would draw with the use of her emotions. It is the only way she could show what she felt without being judged. Badriya believes that it is human nature for people to judge what they dont understand. So with the help of a drawing she hopes to give people another outlet to allow them to feel through another medium.

Badriya’s main inspiration comes from her own emotions, since she loves to draw surrealistically. The combination of reality and imaginary help her to create something powerful. However, she has two main styles of drawing, one that is inspired by her own emotions and the other inspired by other people’s emotions. She usually enjoys abstract drawing when it comes to drawing other people’s emotions.

Neutrinos to Win the Annual Nobel Prize

Europe’s highest court struck down an international data-transfer agreement that allows companies like Google and Facebook to move information like people’s web search histories and social media updates between the EU and US.

October was a sweet month for the scientific community. That's when the annual Nobel Prize in physics is announced. The award went to particle physicists Takaaki Kajita of the University of Tokyo and Arthur B. McDonald of Queen's University in Canada for their groundbreaking research on neutrino oscillations. Neutrinos are electrically neutral subatomic particles that are everywhere in the universe. They're like ghosts of the subatomic world, interacting so little with ordinary matter that they can pass through the entire Earth with hardly a flutter.

In the sphere of business and finances you will be faced with fewer opportunities than you hoped for. However, you will have to face difficulties that will significantly slow you down. Most likely these problems will be technical in nature, so remember to concentrate on the current task.

You will be one of the luckiest signs of the celestial group. You do not have to be afraid of a possibly life-defining choice suddenly arising before you. It may define your life, in part, but the thing is that not a single option will be fully negative. You will just have to choose what feels more right to your heart, a choice that will reflect your nature the most.

For you this month will give birth to two differing paths—one quite positive, and another one with some problems. Be careful to avoid starting a chain of events that may bring a negative outcome. You should be patient and do not try to resolve problems in arguments. Use your charisma and diplomatic abilities, and try to be as attentive as possible.

You will have complicated relationships with the world around you this month. In terms of personal relationships, practically all your wishes will come true in the shortest of terms, unless they fall against the wishes of others. Be sure to pay special attention to those around you this month, in particular your close friends.

This will be a time of great change. In the sphere of work you need to calmly get new contracts, build new connections and be sure to keep yourself updated. Make sure you take a risk if the right opportunity arises. Look at the situation, weigh the pros and cons. Think about this, then make the final decisions after. In your relationships with friends, some tension may occur right now.

The month will be filled with positivity. You will receive the most opportunities right now, while the barriers are reduced to a minimum. You will feel a fantastic inflow of life strength, while your work capability will multiply. The main thing is to believe in yourself and do not give up, no matter what. It is likely that you have lost a real opportunity more than once in the past, most likely due to your indecisiveness.

This month you will face a number of situations all at once that may radically change your life. Hence do not give up on your goals, despite any barriers. Make sure the results of your work shine through. The main thing is to be careful with your health, do not let stress overpower you. Work as much as you can, but do not step over the line, after which you come home and fall on the bed as a lifeless corpse.

This will be a stable time, even though it will not be without its peculiarities. Make sure to focus on your main goal and then solve all your problems in a consecutive manner, the way they are prioritised relative to your goal. Listen to people’s advice right now as they may have something useful for you. Be especially careful with what you say and to whom as you may offend an important person in your life.

19 April—20 May Mystical, powerful, and otherworldly, Scorpios operate on a plane of existence to which few have access. In many ways, they are an enigma unto themselves as well, scarcely understanding their own magical abilities. Once they accept the fact that they can be deeply intuitive they will learn to appreciate and believe in themselves.

November 2015

You will have an exceptionally strong relationship with your loved ones this month. In terms of work, focus on getting the job done and you will find some new opportunities that were previously hidden from you. Now is the time to change everything and start realising your plans. In your personal life, the problem that has been worrying you for a long time will now find its own resolution.

22 August—22 September

21 December—20 January The month will not be the most outstanding month for you, so take necessary precautions. However the best option is for you to swim with the tide, without paying attention to the passing obstacles. Make sure to make several backup plans, and use diplomacy to solve your problems. Your biggest task right now is to maintain what you already have, and not to multiply it. Be attentive, keep cool, and you will find your way back once things settle down.

This month will be a relatively positive life period that may manifest itself in a whole sea of important and large-scale outcomes. Due to which you will need to seriously re-evaluate and optimise all your resources. The main point is not to doubt yourself and your efforts, especially now—when the stars are fully on your side. Make sure to not take sides when dealing with relatives and friends.

This is a time for harmony, positivity and rediscovery both in your career and personal relationships. Make sure to work hard, get more organised, and increase your area of expertise. This is a great time to test yourself and also prove to others what you are worth. Do not worry if something goes astray due to some external influences. Everything will happen the way it should and in the end you will certainly reach your goals.
