What is your top travel tip? Plan your day. Make the most of every moment spent in each port, and utilize the experts. When you hit port, what’s the first thing you do? I always walk down the pier and talk to each guest I pass. I want to know what everyone is doing and share advice from past experiences on how they can best spend their day in port, from shopping to shore excursions. What accessories do you love right now? I’m a huge Kabana fan. The meticulous attention to detail is incredible and Kabana designs are stylish, versatile and fashion forward. I love their use of solid inlay with stunning organic gemstones: pink mother of pearl, Australian opal, spiny oyster shell, plus so many more.
Do you have a favorite Kabana piece? A friend bought a Kabana heart-shaped pendant, set in rosegold with pink mother of pearl. She explained how this was the perfect evocative keepsake of her life’s journey and a reminder of those closest to her. Kabana truly represents love and family. My Hublot is a powerful statement piece, so I often plan my outfit around that. What drives your passion for high-end watches? Tell us about Vacation Creation. I take a vacation around the world with a deserving family. We go on cruise ships and sail all over. We do excursions and adventures together. Some of these people have had true tragedies in their lives, so it’s nice to experience the higher side of life with them. Do you cruise? When I get a break from working. I want to go to Mykonos to chill, or to London. Depends on the season.
Tommy Davidson first made a name for himself on the groundbreaking 1990s sketch-comedy hit In Living Color, and has brought his innovative talents to projects with such greats as Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls), Halle Berry (Strictly Business) and Spike Lee (Bamboozled). These days he’s using his fame to better people’s lives through travel. His reality show, Vacation Creation, now in its third season, gives deser ving families the vacation of a lifetime. Davidson, however, still manages to find time for his own travel adventures. We caught up with him on a recent stand-up tour to get his take on cruising, fashion and his impressive career.
What’s your favorite thing about cruising? The shows. Those productions are epic. I enjoy the food. There are all these different restaurants onboard, so you can eat at a different place every night and not get bored. And the buffets are like Vegas buffets. What’s been your best vacation to date? There are a lot of them: Singapore and Dubai are really cool, but Cuba made the biggest impression on me lately. Are you more of an island vacation person? I can diversify. Island life is slowed down. They care a little bit less about what we care so much about. We care so much about what we have and who we are and prestige. Americans seem to be driven so much, which is okay. It’s what our lives are about. But not everyone lives like that. You’re not left out of a race if you aren’t in a race. Where are you most looking forward to traveling next? Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam. How do you relax on a trip? I like to watch documentaries. My passion is finding out about things. Let’s talk about style. How do you describe your look? Casual chic. I might wear some nice designer stuff but with plain jeans and Converse. I’m a mix between what the designer has to offer and what I have to offer as me. What do you have the most of in your closet? Too many sneakers. My favorites are Chuck Taylor All-Stars. They are the most comfortable. And they look amazing with everything from jeans and a tee to a suit.

Hail to the Queen As Queen Latifah takes on her role as godmother to Carnival’s newest ship, we look back on the rise of this musician, actress and entrepreneur. BY L AUREN COMANDER Shor tly af ter Queen Latifah signed on as a spokesperson with CoverGirl, a woman approached her in the airport and congratulated her on the partnership. But, the woman said, she was disappointed that she could never find a shade made for her dark complexion. “I thought, ‘Why am I CoverGirl if we can’t get our different shades?’” Latifah told Essence in 2017. In that moment, she decided to do something about it. Enter the Queen Collection, 12 CoverGirl shades created specifically for women of color that hit shelves in 2005. “The first thing we did was . . . get rid of that ashy stuff that makes black girls look gray,” she told Essence. Today, more than a decade after its launch, the line remains one of the most popular for women of color. Perhaps it’s this loyalty to her fans that has helped them see her as royalty, no mat te r w hic h c row n s he we a r s, whether as talented musician, popular actress or charismatic entrepreneur. BIG VOICE, BIG DREAMS From the beginning, Latifah was an independent little girl with a big voice. Born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey, to Lance, a police officer, and Rita, a loving mom who later became an art teacher, she sang in her church choir and loved to perform. As a 7-year-old, she commanded the only standing ovation as one of three Dorothys in a school production of The Wiz. Shortly after, as she and her brother struggled through their parents’ split, she nicknamed herself Latifah, Arabic for “delicate and sensitive.” “My brother and I had many, many, m a ny d ays that we…c r i e d o n e ac h
o t h e r ’s s h o u l d e r,” s h e o n c e t o l d Barbara Walters. For a time, Latifah’s mother raised her and her brother in public housing. Her first job came at age 15, when she worked at Burger King. “It became my goal to buy my parents houses,” she told Good Housekeeping, “and I did.” RAP ROYALTY By high school, Latifah could be heard rapping in the restrooms. She and two friends formed a rap group called Flavor Unit, and they hung out with a local DJ in his parents’ well-equipped basement. At age 19, she became the first female solo rapper with a major record deal, releasing her debut album All Hail to the Queen. It sold more than 1 million copies, breaking through with a message of female empowerment in an of ten-misogynistic genre, and its hit single “Ladies First” established her as rap music’s top female artist. Latifah took her earnings and invested in a deli and video store on the ground floor of her apartment building, fueling her entrepreneurial spirit and prompting he r, along with he r mothe r and a childhood friend, to launch Flavor Unit Records and Management Company in 1991. Two years later, the company had signed 17 rap groups, including the wildly successful Naughty by Nature. As her record label blossomed and she continued to churn out hits, she became the first hip-hop artist with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “The reason I am here is to inspire African-American women who are rappers, full-figured women, to know that they can do it, too,” she said at the unveiling.

QUEEN OF THE SCREEN The blockbuster hit Jungle Fever launched her acting career, followed by a starring television role on Living Single and a talk show of her own. Her 2002 role as prison matron Mama Morton in Chicago earned her an Oscar nod, and when she produced and starred in Beauty Shop in 2005, she merged her interests by working CoverGirl products into the flick. “There was no way I was doing a movie called Beauty Shop and they were not going to let me get CoverGirl up in there,” she told The New York Times. Aiming to lower her cholesterol and improve her overall health, Latifah stepped out as a face of the Jenny Craig brand in 2008, taking Kirstie Alley’s place. Six months later, through diet and a gym habit involving an hour of treadmill or elliptical five days a week, she reached her goal of losing 5 to 10 percent of her body weight. When filming Bessie, a 2015 HBO flick about blues legend Bessie Smith that earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, she gained 10 pounds for a nude scene. “I felt like that

Queen Latifah brought her own kind of regal bearing to her role as godmother to Carnival Horizon. She presided over its official naming ceremony and poured a huge bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne over the ship’s bell, then squared off against Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion Jake Elliott in Lip Sync Battle: Horizon. In true Latifah fashion, she rocked the packed house in a yellow raincoat with her interpretation of the Weather Girls’ classic “It’s Raining Men,” taking home the win. She also recognized the young patients of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, whose colorful artwork is featured on the ship’s Dreamscape LED atrium sculpture. “Carnival Horizon’s naming ceremony was one of our best yet,” says Christine Duffy, the cruise line’s president and CEO. “With her fun-loving spirit and positive, can-do attitude, Queen Latifah embodies our brand and knows how to ‘Choose Fun’ in everything she does.” The event also scored with Richard Shadyac Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude. “This is an absolute thrill for our patients and their families to have their artwork featured as a permanent display on this magnificent ship,” he says. Carnival has long had a strong partnership with St. Jude, which is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, because all a family should worry about is that their child gets better. After raising more than $16 million for St. Jude over eight years, Carnival was named its Corporate Partner of the Year in 2018. Recalls Latifah, “My time aboard Carnival Horizon was nothing short of incredible. In addition to having the honor of serving as the ship’s godmother, meeting the amazing kids from St. Jude and their families and squaring off against Jake in an all-out Lip Sync Battle is certainly something I will always cherish.” 69

IDEAL ANGLES
Slight adjustments in your pose will reap notable differences. Start by holding up your arms so the camera is facing slightly downward. Extending your neck, tucking down your chin and slightly tilting your head will give your face a flattering angular look. Adjust your shoulders so they are not parallel to the camera, by taking a slight turn to either side. You’ll appear more svelte in full-length shots by slightly cocking your hip to the same side you are holding your camera in. Bring your opposite shoulder forward a bit and let your free arm either hang by your side or rest on your hip.
