A VIEW From the Bridge
Meet the captain and senior officers of the new cruise ship. Rocco Lubrano Captain / Master After graduating from maritime school and serving apprenticeships on various cargo ships, Rocco Lubrano joined Carnival Cruise Line in 1986, when the company’s fleet consisted of just five vessels. He was promoted to captain in 2002. Over the course of his career, he has commanded virtually every vessel in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet.
Lubrano is a native of Procida, Italy, an island approximately 12 miles off the coast of Naples. His nautical career was inspired and mentored by his father, Donato, who served as a chief engineer for cargo vessels for 40 years. He currently resides in Salisbury in southwest England with his wife, Vicki, and their three children, Alessandro, Isabella and Antonio. When he’s not aboard ship, Lubrano enjoys playing soccer and watching live games of his favorite team, UK’s Chelsea Football Club. His family recently adopted a new member of the family — a friendly and sweet cocker spaniel called Luna. 8

Diego Michelozzi Staff Captain Italian-born Diego Michelozzi joined Carnival Cruise Line in 2000 and was named to his current position, staff captain, in 2012. In this capacity, he is second in command of the vessel and oversees all of the ship’s safety and security functions. His favorite Carnival Service Value is, appropriately enough, Ensure Safe, Reliable and Secure Operations.

In his spare time, he enjoys watching TV, going to the gym and practicing Krav Maga, a form of martial arts.
Cesare Boldrini Chief Engineer Cesare Boldrini joined Carnival Cruise Line in 1995, serving as an engine cadet following his graduation from the Merchant Marine Academy Nazario Sauro in La Spezia, Italy. He was named chief engineer in 2011.

Raffaele Nappi Staff Chief Engineer Raffaele Nappi joined Carnival Cruise Line in 2003 and was named to his current position, staff chief engineer, in 2011. Prior to joining Carnival, he spent five years working on a cargo ship as well as nine years as a project manager for a land-based company in his native Italy. Carnival Vista is his third new-build project. He previously worked on Carnival Freedom and Carnival Dream. His favorite Carnival Service Value is Warmly Welcome Our Guests and Team Members to Our Home and Make Them Feel Like Part of the Carnival Family. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys tennis and cycling when not aboard ship.

A SHIP IS BORN
It took a team of thousands to conceive and bring to life Carnival Cruise Line’s biggest, most innovative ship. The future of fun is here. And it’s huge — 133,500 tons, to be exact. “Carnival Vista genuinely does represent the future of our brand,” says Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line president. “Our whole mission is to provide fun, memorable and exceptional vacation experiences for our guests, and the ship elevates the guest experience like never before.” “A tremendous amount of thought was put into the design of this ship,” she continues, “all to provide guests a feeling of being connected to the sea through beautiful views at every turn — hence the name Carnival Vista.” Planning and Dreaming The ship was under construction for more than two years, says Ben Clement, Carnival’s vice president of new builds. “As our largest and most innovative ship, this is the result of years of planning and the efforts of thousands of workers who designed and constructed this magnificent vessel.” The planning and dreaming began long before the first piece of steel was cut. Leadership from across all departments met in early 2012, bringing wish lists of items they wanted to include on the new vessel. “Our goal was to continue the evolution of fun,” Clement says. Seems like they did it. “It takes the Carnival cruise experience to unprecedented heights,” Clement says, “with a number of unique innovations not found on any other ship.” Guests have an array of innovative options, from family fun and outdoor recreation to entertainment, fine dining and relaxation. They can stroll a wraparound promenade deck, dine in up to a dozen venues featuring outdoor seating, and even pedal 150 feet above the ocean’s waves.

CARNIVAL VISTA | The Making of the Ship Carnival didn’t look for innovation just in the elements of the ship, but also in the designers themselves. Clement says the new-builds team intentionally chose architecture and design firms that hadn’t worked on cruise ship projects. “They didn’t feel encumbered with preconceived ideas of what a cruise ship should look like, or ‘the way it’s always been done,’” Clement says, “which everyone found refreshing.” A Massive Team Effort Getting it all done took more than 10,000 individuals: designers, engineers, carpenters, contractors, machinists, foremen, electricians, mechanics and welders. Personnel from countries all over the globe came together to produce this beautiful ship. Duffy praises their teamwork. “It takes a huge amount of organization, commitment and teamwork to not only build a cruise ship but to operate one as well. It’s really quite extraordinary when you consider the number of people from around the world who were involved in the construction.” Of course, teamwork doesn’t stop after the ship is launched, she notes. “Once the ship is in service, the Carnival teams both shipboard and shoreside will continue to do an amazing job of providing our guests with an exceptional experience, from the moment they book their cruise to when they walk off the gangway at the end of their incredible voyage.” Gus Antorcha, executive vice president, guest shipboard operations, agrees. “Carnival Vista represents the future for our brand, and I think our guests are going to absolutely love it.”

Guests are brought closer to the sea than ever before, not only with the exciting SkyRide and Kaleid-o-Slide but also with dining and accommodations. A wide variety of dining options along the wraparound promenade deck attracts guests outside to behold more stunning sunsets, more incredible landscapes and seascapes. “What’s great is the whole indoor/outdoor experience,” Duffy says. “From wherever you are, you’re really drawn to the outside space.” The Havana staterooms and suites, located at the stern of the ship on the promenade deck as well as decks 6 and 7, feature unique tropical décor. Step inside and feel like you’ve come home to your own island resort. The Havana Cabanas, conveniently near the Havana Bar and Pool, feature an extra-large outdoor lounging space. The ship pushes the limits with exciting innovations, like the first-ever IMAX theater at sea. The massive screen, towering three decks high and almost as wide as the vessel itself, enhances every motion, immersing you in the film. Watch Hollywood blockbusters the week they’re released, recent hit films and IMAX shorts while cruising port to port. Sarah Beth Reno, Carnival’s vice president of entertainment, says movies are an important part of the ship’s appeal to families. “As a mom of three, I know how difficult it is to find time to see first releases in the theaters,” she says. “Now, busy families will actually have time to enjoy movies together on a big IMAX screen.” The ship boasts another first-ever at sea: an onboard brewery. The RedFrog Brewery crafts its own microbrews and, like many of the dining options on the promenade deck, offers a mix of indoor and outdoor seating. Carnival is brewing up some adventure with the world’s first brewery at sea. It’s the result of a unique collaboration between Carnival and Miami-based Concrete Beach Brewery. The two companies worked closely together to produce three distinctive, original craft beers that will be brewed and served on the ship: ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA, ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat and FriskyFrog Java Stout. “Guests want to try new and exciting things,” says Eddie Allen, Carnival’s vice president of beverage operations. “We’re excited to offer them this unique experience, where they can watch the beer being made, sample the beer, tour the brewery and talk to the brewmaster.” Just how did Carnival go about accomplishing this boozy feat? The tasks included transporting 4,000-pound glass brew kettles and assorted machinery onto the vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, and then building the brewery within the existing space on promenade deck 5. Carnival’s timing is impeccable. The craft beer market in the United States has seen tremendous growth in recent years. According to the Brewers Association, craft beer production increased by 18 percent in 2014 and experienced a 22 percent increase in dollar sales. Sales volume for the craft sector also experienced a significant bump, with 21,775,905 bottles sold. “Our guests aren’t looking for a macro-brewed beer they can find anywhere. They’re looking for fun and exciting new things to try — and craft beer is that,” adds Allen. “Plus, it gives me something to drink while I’m onboard!” — Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY The largest ship in the Carnival fleet is also the most technologically advanced. “Eighty-five percent of the equipment installed on Carnival Vista has never been installed on any Carnival ship before,” says Cesare Boldrini, the ship’s chief engineer. One item guests notice right away is the enormous LED column rising three decks high from the atrium bar. It’s an ever-changing visual delight. Here in the atrium, you can watch colorful underwater scenes such as schools of fish swirling around, or see light shows with vibrant shapes twisting about. The ship also includes a truly revolutionary propulsion system. Underneath the waterline, at the very bottom of the aft end of the ship, are twin 170-ton propellers. These Azipod propellers, designed to rotate a full 360 degrees, help optimize maneuverability and increase fuel efficiency. Creators introduced even more efficiency measures to reduce the ship’s carbon footprint. (See “Technically Speaking.”) “What we have in place will set the standard for new builds going forward,” says Rabih Aboudargham, Carnival’s director of environmental operations. “It truly is an honor to be associated with a ship as environmentally friendly as this one entering the fleet.” What’s more, the ship has been awarded the ECO Class Notation (Environmental, Construction and Operations beyond statutory requirement) certification from Lloyd’s Register. “This certification demonstrates Carnival’s commitment to go above and beyond the expected,” says Aboudargham, “by recognizing the voluntary standards we adopted for environmental ship design, construction and operation.”

MAKING Building the world’s first IMAX theater at sea was no easy task. In fact, installing the huge screen proved to be extremely challenging. At three decks high and nearly the width of the ship, the screen could not be bent during transport or installation, and any rips or tears could not be repaired. Since it couldn’t be folded or turned, the screen couldn’t be taken down corridors. The screen was taken out of its box, rolled up and “threaded” through a three-foot hole cut into the side of the theater. A stateroom and balcony across the corridor of the theater wall was dismantled to facilitate the process. In addition, a temporary platform had to be built so workers, stationed every two feet, could help guide, lift and feed the screen from the crane through the balcony and stateroom, across the corridor and through the hole into the theater. To make matters even more difficult, the hole had just a two-inch clearance all the way around the rolled-up screen. “It was rather like trying to thread a needle with a long, long sausage,” says Nigel Stables, director of technical entertainment for Carnival. The end result was well worth all the effort.

Several efficiency measures are in place to reduce the ship’s carbon footprint: • Efficient engines: Different engine sizes allow for better optimization of the engine loading. • Indirect cooling glycol system: This type of system reduces the amount of refrigerant in circulation onboard the ship. • Non-ODS (Non-Ozone-Depleting Substance) freon: Both refrigerants used for the air-conditioning system and for provision rooms are non-ozone-depleting. • Optimized hull design: Carnival worked with outside naval architects to reduce the hull’s drag in the water by optimizing its shape. • Waste heat recovery: This is the first Carnival ship in the fleet to be fitted with a power-generating steam turbine to help recapture the exhaust heat of the engines.
WITH CARNIVAL HUB, THAT’S HOW. It’s a free mobile app for both Apple and Android smartphones. It provides a convenient, at-a-glance view of the many shipboard facilities and features along with updates on what’s happening onboard.

DINING: STYLE TO SAVOR Designers serve “Oh wow! moments” in the main dining rooms. To create the look and feel of the ship’s two main dining rooms, Carnival chose Big Time Design Studios, a Miami company known for its hip, high-concept spaces. We asked Big Time Design owner Callin Fortis how it all came about.

Tell us about the two venues Big Time Design worked on. We worked on what I consider to be the flagship venues — in the aft [Reflections] and forward [Horizons] sections. The aft is the one that, in my humble opinion, gets your heart beating a little faster as you enter. It isn’t just another culinary journey — it is the space with double-height ceiling volumes and the most amazing vista (pun intended) of any space I’ve ever designed. For the forward location, the mission was to create the excitement and drama we have in the aft, but without the soaring ceilings. Therefore, the design language was developed initially for the aft — and the challenge presented itself by bringing the same magic to a space (forward) that didn’t have the inherent drama in its architecture. What was the inspiration behind each venue? Working with Carnival is a dream come true for a designer. They provided us with a very detailed and brilliant concept and story. Our role, aside from the obvious, was really to tell a compelling story that is both aspirational and experiential. We want people to feel as though the design reacted with them — not to them.
Things are meant to be touched and savored, not just looked at. If we could help create an environment that resulted in an “aha” moment and one that made you say “Wow” as you came or left, then we were successful in our design. How did Big Time bring its hip, high-concept sensibility to this ship? We pride ourselves on having a strong brand ethos for the space. Carnival is fun. Cruising is fun. Fun has many faces. The envelope or frame that we created is not just fun to look at, but functional as well. We brought in larger-thanlife interior elements to this space. There are features that are intentionally meant to be on the side of awe-inspiring as well as elements that you react with as opposed to react to. The finishes we chose are warm, inviting and accessible, while still feeling unique and fresh. Just like the food! What’s the one thing that sets the design of the dining options apart? Sharing and sense of community played a big part in our design. There is a central hub as you enter the aft dining room that really was meant to be a social gathering place and to create the “Oh wow!” moment. I believe we are the only [restaurant] with a center core island bar in the dining room. Much like many high-end restaurants you see today. What are some aspects of the design that you feel will surprise guests? That a space so dramatic can feel as intimate and familiar as it does. There is a feature wall that I believe will be an instant social media backdrop. There is an accessible elegance, without being pretentious, that comes through in the wood tones, bar feature and lighting. ENTERTAINMENT CARNIVAL MULTIPLEX FEATURING IMAX “Several executives at Carnival are movie buffs,” says Sarah Beth Reno, vice president of entertainment. “And they wanted to bring a real movie experience to a Carnival ship.” Boy, did they ever. Carnival Vista features the first-ever IMAX theater at sea, as well as the Thrill Theater, an ultra-cool 3-D experience. Together, they make up the Carnival Multiplex, showing first-run movies, recent releases, family favorites and more.
Carnival is serious about comedy. “I’m excited to bring the highest-caliber comedians onboard each week for shows that rival comedy clubs all over the U.S.,” says Reno. Adults-only and family comedy segments run every evening, so everyone has a chance to laugh it up.

The largest Cherry on Top in the Carnival fleet, it’s also the first to host a premium ice cream parlor. Head to the Sports Deck, step inside one of the capsules and put the pedal to the air, powering your way around an 800-foot-long track encircling the ropes course. “I can’t believe how high it is,” says Sarah Beth Reno, vice president, entertainment. “Guests will really get an amazing view of the sea. It’s exhilarating fun, and it’s only on Carnival Vista.”
SPORTSQUARE SkyRide is just part of the indoor/outdoor action at SportSquare. Enter The Clubhouse for mini-bowling, arcade-style basketball and fun games like soccer, volleyball and ping-pong. If you prefer fresh ocean breezes while you’re hard at play, try the SkyGreens mini-golf course or the basketball court, or grab a rope and climb your way to the top of SkyCourse.

Carnival Vista will leave Europe in October 2016 for new adventures in the Caribbean. On her transatlantic crossing, she’ll depart from Barcelona and head to the charming port of Gibraltar. A shopping expert is the person everyone needs to be best friends with when shopping on a cruise! They have done the homework for you and can tell you the very place that has exactly what you are looking for at the best price. They’ll also tell you the very person (manager/owner/sales associate) to speak to so you’ll be taken care of. There’s no need to have to traipse from store to store when you can find what you’re looking for straight away.
Are most people shopping for themselves, or is this a good time to get gifts for people back home? Both! It’s a great time to shop for everyone! A cruise is the perfect time to indulge in something special for yourself — because of the selection, the pricing and the fact that you deserve it on vacation! You must take home something that will be a treasured keepsake and reminder of your cruise vacation. When it comes to family and friends, they will be covered too! Stock up for birthdays, anniversaries — all the occasions that matter.
Finally, what is the one thing that’s most important to remember when shopping during a cruise? Stick to reputable stores. And listen to your shopping expert. They’ll give you their honest advice and make sure that you have the best experience on your cruise! Most importantly, buy what you love! Shopping’s meant to be fun and create memories of a lifetime.
