ABSTRACT

Factors influencing information systems failures in Nasarawa state, Nigeria has increasingly limited the possibility of Nasarawa state to power-up Smart-city concepts that have recently become a global trend. It is very evident that if these factors remain potent/active and unchecked, the huge resources invested in this sector will end up perceived as wastage; where the results are increased inefficient systems that have little or no positive impact on growth and development for the Nation as a whole . Reviewed literature show that previous scholarly researches dwelled on generalized factors alone to research IS failures; however these generalizations have not really fully helped in curbing these failures especially for developing countries given rising IS failures. Key possibilities for this growing incapacity with ISs in Nasarawa state, Nigeria remains the: digital component and social context as specific to the study region. Therefore the researcher uses qualitative and quantitative data from select public/private sector workers to triangulate key elemental problem causing features of Information Systems based on (1) The Digital Component and (2) The Social Context as specifically obtainable in Nasarawa state, Nigeria. key findings show that issue-based themes in relation to IS failure factors in Nasarawa state, Nigeria revolve around community mobilization, ownership, multi-stakeholder approaches, resistance and conflicts, affordability of electricity to mention but a few. The research provides a blueprint for government and key stakeholders to take hold of the outstanding possibilities intrinsic in IS to not only empower their rich youth human resource base, economic resource base, social resource base, and enrich online customer markets but also to understand the raison d'être behind huge investments, a more smart and well organized environment and the basis for which these failures can be adequately curbed.
